Arguably the greatest black comedy ever made, Stanley Kubrick's cold-war classic is the ultimate satire of the nuclear age. Dr. Strangelove is a perfect spoof of political and military insanity, beginning when General Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden), a maniacal warrior obsessed with "the purity of precious bodily fluids," mounts his singular campaign against Communism by ordering a squadron of B-52 bombers to attack the Soviet Union. The Soviets counter the threat with a so- called "Doomsday Device," and the world hangs in the balance while the U.S. president (Peter Sellers) engages in hilarious hot-line negotiations with his Soviet counterpart. Sellers also plays a British military attaché and the mad bomb-maker Dr. Strangelove; George C. Scott is outrageously frantic as General Buck Turgidson, whose presidential advice consists mainly of panic and statistics about "acceptable losses." With dialogue ("You can't fight here! This is the war room!") and images (Slim Pickens's character riding the bomb to oblivion) that have become a part of our cultural vocabulary, Kubrick's film regularly appears on critics' lists of the all-time best. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars One of the Great Black Comedies.......2007-06-21

This work doesn't need much explaination. It is a true classic black comedy. It uses humaor to show how ludicrous and easily corrupted our governments truly are. It simultaneously shines a homorous and frightening light on nuclear war. In my opinion, this is well worth your time. And if you are interested in nuclear war, World War III or end times works, I highly recommend the book Mysteries of the Universe... it is shocking, controversial and frightening! Here's tha amazon page link: Mysteries of the Universe: A Revolutionary Commentary on UFOs, Aliens, Angels, Pyramids, Bible Codes, Reincarnation, the Antichrist...

5 out of 5 stars Watch This Movie and Sleep Better At Night .......2007-06-12

This movie offers the best tongue and cheek commentary on the absurdities of war. I am sure this movie has been heavily "borrowed" from by Hollywood. The "Survival Kit Content Check" scene reminded me alot about the more recent "duct tape your windows" survival tactics. If you believe that the end of the world will come in a flash of light, this movie will validate you.

5 out of 5 stars Peter Sellers heads up a great cast.......2007-06-08

Peter Sellers heads up a great cast in a very funny movie. Worth having in your Peter Sellers collection!

5 out of 5 stars Embrace the Horror!.......2007-05-29

Does the end of the world scare you? Do you stay awake at night wondering when those madmen will finally really do it? Does the idea of a mushroom cloud strike terror in your heart?

Then you my friend need to sit down and watch Dr. Strangelove or How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. This entertaining and educational(dare I say edutaining?) film shows you what would really happen if a United States Air Force Commander ignored the requirement for Presidential authorization and simply attacked the Soviet Union on his own initiative. All the safeguards that are put in place to prevent such an action come crashing down and conspire against those racing to prevent nuclear armageddon.

See fighting in the war room! Learn about the big board! Find out the truth about fluoride! See the dedication of US military servicemen in the face of illogical orders and impossible odds! Discover the secret of Dr. Strangelove!

If you don't see this film, you won't just have to answer to me and the United States Government, but also to the Coca-Cola Corporation.

4 out of 5 stars Mostly Perfect Trade.......2007-05-18

Dr. Strangelove is a kick to watch if the style suits you. Littered with black humor and satire dated to the early cold war days, this movie will provide as much comedy as it will history.

Do not expect the flashy humor in todays comedies but a more subtle poke at the dark aspects of society and humanity.

The only problem I had with any aspect of the purchase was a small crack in the clear protective plastic which protects the cover.

A good buy for movie know-it-alls and aficionados.

After he pushed the envelope of computer-generated special effects in The Abyss, director James Cameron turned this hotly anticipated sequel to Terminator into a well-written, action-packed showcase for advanced special effects and for one of the most invincible villains ever imagined. Terminator 2: Judgment Day is a legitimate sequel: there's more story to tell about a hulking, leather-clad android (Arnold Schwarzenegger) who arrives from the future to protect a rebellious teenager and future leader (Edward Furlong) from being killed by the tenacious T-1000 robot (Robert Patrick), whose liquid-metal construction makes him seemingly unstoppable. The fate of the future lies in the balance, with Linda Hamilton (who would later marry her director) reprising her role as the rugged woman whose son will change the course of history. --Jeff Shannon

    Description

He said he'd be back. This time experience T2 like never before! Go EXTREME with the best picture and sound ever! ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER returns as the Terminator in this explosive action-adventure spectacle. Now he's one of the good guys, sent back in time to protect John Connor, the boy destined to lead the freedom fighters of the future. LINDA HAMILTON reprises her role as Sarah Connor, John's mother, a quintessential survivor who has been institutionalized for her warning of the nuclear holocaust she knows is inevitable. Together, the threesome must find a way to stop the ultimate enemy - the T-1000, the most lethal Terminator ever created. Co-written, produced and directed by James Cameron ("The Terminator," "Aliens," "Titanic), this visual tour de force is also a touching story of survival.

5 out of 5 stars Owes just as much to "Aliens" as it does its predecessor.......2007-06-17

It's no surprise that the editors of "Entertainment Weekly" would choose both "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" and "Aliens" as two of its 25 Best Action Films of all time. Both are sequels that significantly up the special effects ante, along with the body count, and both feature two of the movies most dynamic kick-[...] heroines, Sarah Conner (Linda Hamilton" in the former and Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) in the latter.

Besides doubling the action of the first, "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" also doubles the cyborg quotient by returning Arnold Schwarzenegger in the role that he was born to play (this time as a "good" cyborg) and bringing in a more than equal combatant/foe in the from of the Robert Patrick as an "upgraded" model. The movie adds an element of surprise in the form of the much smaller (and less developed) Patrick as a superior model to Arnold's character, able to best the strongman in many a scene.

The movie also brings back Earl Boen in an expanded role as the befuddled "Dr. Silberman." He brings needed comic relief in a film that is short on words but long on action sequences.

James Cameron may have felt on "top of the world" a decade later with his Oscar-winning "Titanic" but it is for the first two "Terminator" films that he probably made his greatest cinematic impact.

    5 out of 5 stars Let's Shed Some Light.......2007-05-27

i love this film being a big film buff and all but also i've noticed that the price is fantastic and is even more cheaper in certain stores, anyway when i bought the dvd and popped it in the dvd player i was amazed with the picture pure high def 1080p i mean i baught this movie for 5.50 and it's in high definition, the blu-ray version is like 20 or 25 bucks so i'm wonderin why make a whole nother disc-format and just make standard dvd's in high def i mean perhaps u can't fit any special features but why not just make them double sided dvd's and put the special features on the other side instead of movie companies using 2 discs and waste money. i believe this will prevail and end the war against blu-ray vs. hd-dvd and just keep blank blu-ray discs for information purposes. I mean i love blu-ray and i want one so bad but u gotta pay up the nose just to get one, at least players are becoming more and more affordable but i dont want to have to convert all my 700 dvds to high def formats. it's interesting how Artisan backed this movie and now it doesnt exist anymore as soon as the high def battle started, Lionsgate is now mastering all thier old movies and they back up blu-ray 100%, it just makes you think what coinsidences emerged with all this, terminator 2 on standard dvd is in high def (for us in the US anyway) it cost me 5.50 its just a big mystery to me...

4 out of 5 stars Best of Three...........2007-05-26

T2 is by far the best out of the Terminator Trilogy. I recommend seeing T1, then T2 and then leaving T3 at the store.

    5 out of 5 stars COOL DVD!!!!!!.......2007-05-04

T2 is a awsome movie The action is so amasing and the Specile effects are incredable I recimend you buy this now it is such a great movie that you will watch it over and over agein!

This unclassifiable but stunningly original film obliterates the walls between teen comedy, science fiction, family drama, horror, and cultural satire--and remains wildly entertaining throughout. Jake Gyllenhaal (October Sky) stars as Donnie, a borderline-schizophrenic adolescent for whom there is no difference between the signs and wonders of reality (a plane crash that decimates his house) and hallucination (a man-sized, reptilian rabbit who talks to him). Obsessed with the science of time travel and acutely aware of the world around him, Donnie is isolated by his powers of analysis and the apocalyptic visions that no one else seems to share. The debut feature of writer-director Richard Kelly, Donnie Darko is a shattering, hypnotic work that sets its own terms and gambles--rightfully so, as it turns out--that a viewer will stay aboard for the full ride. --Tom Keogh

    Description

During the presidential election of 1988, a teenager named Donnie Darko sleepwalks out of his house one night, and sees a giant, demonic-looking rabbit named Frank, who tells him the world will end in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds. He returns home the next morning to find that a jet engine has crashed through his bedroom. As he tries to figure out why he survived and tries to deal with people in his town, like the school bully, his conservative health teacher, and a self-help guru, Frank continues to turn up in Donnie's mind, causing him to commit acts of vandalism and worse. The new Director?s Cut includes a production diary of the film (with optional commentary by Director of Photography Steven Poster), a story-board to screen featurette, the Director?s cut theatrical trailer, They Made Me Do It Too ? 5 out of 5 stars Holy Cow!.......2007-06-14

Well, I was not expecting this when I watched it! It's amazing. It's not actually horrific, there's little blood and almost no violence. This movie is something amazing, something a little creepy and sweet that gets into you and makes you bawl like a baby... ok, makes me bawl like a baby, but hey, I was really tired, ok? It's complicated adn strange and surreal and beautiful and follows an inevetable chain to the end. You really have to pay attention and think - it's not gonna let you space out for a couple hours or miss bits and coast along. But it's easy to pay attention, it's so beautiful.

So - one of my favorite movies.

    5 out of 5 stars i liked it a lot.......2007-05-15

it is a very moving film about a troubled boy, but at the same time it is all in his mind. i found it very interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Gift for My Son.......2007-05-15

Excellent buying Experience - gift was greatly appreciated. Highly recommend seller.

5 out of 5 stars Avoid the Director's Cut at all costs.......2007-05-01

Please folks, get the original movie, not the Director's Cut. The Director's Cut adds additional "scenes" that add nothing to the narrative and actually dectract from the original presentation. The Director's Cut also horribly mangles the classic and unforgettable soundtrack of the original by removing some songs and reordering the ones that remain. While for some films (Blade Runner), the Director's Cut provides the "definitive version", the original presentation of Donnie Darko was better left alone. If you feel the compelling need to buy the Director's Cut because you feel that "it must be better, right?", at least rent the original. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Tangled webs of time and life........2007-04-22

A beautiful tightly woven masterpiece of a movie. A cult phenomenon, with lots guts and creepiness to make it stand out for years. Don't expect to "get" this movie the first time, you'll need to watch it a few times. Jake Gyllenhaal does a great job as the strange unadjusted Donnie Darko, a teenager who may be crazy or is just caught in some kind of time loop. The realization at the end that he was able to change the future is powerful indeed. Solid acting by all cast and a few nice cameos, make this a highly recomended film. Join the club ,get into Donnie Darko.

George Romero's 1978 follow-up to his classic Night of the Living Dead is quite terrifying and gory (those zombies do like the taste of living flesh). But in its own way, it is just as comically satiric as the first film in its take on contemporary values. This time, we follow the fortunes of four people who lock themselves inside a shopping mall to get away from the marauding dead and who then immerse themselves in unabashed consumerism, taking what they want from an array of clothing and jewelry shops, making gourmet meals, etc. It is Romero's take on Louis XVI in the modern world: keep the starving masses at bay and crank up the insulated indulgence. Still, this is a horror film when all is said and done, and even some of Romero's best visual jokes (a Hare Krishna turned blue-skinned zombie) can make you sweat. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Dawn of the Dead Ultimate Edition lives up to it's name.......2007-06-09

The Dawn of the Dead Ultimate Edition really lives up to it's name.
It's 4 DVDs; The theatrical cut, Cannes extended cut, European cut and the documentaries DVD.
The different cuts shows footage you never saw before.
The theatrical cut has commentary from George Romero himself, his wife Christine, and makeup artist/ stunt man Tom Savini.
The European cut has a great commentary featuring all four stars of the film.
The documentaries DVD features The Dead Will Walk and Document of the Dead (Which I've been waiting to see for years.)
Enjoy all the zombie goodness. This is a must have.

3 out of 5 stars I want to say that I loved this movie but I'll be honest: It's not scary and, for the most part, it's not funny or entertaining.......2007-06-06

I love zombie movies. Movies like Night of the Living Dead (and the remake), Dead Alive, and Return of the Living Dead are among my favorite movies. They're an adrenaline rush, they can be funny, they can be scary, but they're almost always entertaining. I would not, however, call the original Dawn of the Dead an entertaining movie. For the most part, I thought it was a boring movie.

I really am baffled by the good reviews of this movie from both critics and fans alike. The Rottentomatoes website has it as the second highest rated Zombie film (after the original Night of the Living Dead). And I have some theories on why that is: the acting is, while not always impressive, certainly solid. The story was original (It was, I believe, only the second zombie movie ever made). For those reasons I gave it 3 stars because I felt that it deserved it.

But something about this movie just didn't click with me and I suspect it's not going to click with many other people my age (I'm 23). I also have my theories about why that may be:

    The music?
Something about it didn't feel right for a horror film. It was unique and it certainly had a 70s feel to it but...ehh... I give up. I'm not someone good at critiquing music. It just didn't work.

The fact that the zombies are walking the streets when the movie starts?
Half of the fun with zombie films seems to be watching the world go from a civil society to virtual anarchy as the zombies become more numerous. But in this movie the zombies have the upperhand from the start. So where's the fun?

I know this is a sequel but I guess that's the downside to being a zombie sequel.

    No central character?
There's a black man that is perhaps the unofficial leader. There's a young white man with the personality of a cowboy. There's a sort of insecure helicopter pilot and his pregnant girlfriend.

Between these four characters, there are no conflicts and little or no romance. There is no truly central character and in zombie movies (or any horror film) I like it when they focus primarily on one character so that we feel like we experienced the zombies from someone's perspective. I never felt like I got to know any of the characters. And this is a typical flaw in horror movies: we have to first know the characters before we can care about them and worry about their safety.

Between the two Dawn of the Dead movies I prefer the remake. I used to think that this may be because I saw the remake before I saw the original so that I would have a bias towards it. But, more and more, I'm beginning to doubt that that is why I prefer the 2004 remake for the reasons listed above.

I know I may offend many people out there for saying this, but I think that this is the most overrated zombie movie. My two cents.

    2 out of 5 stars I'm so disappointed...........2007-05-31

It's probably unfair of me to criticize a movie nearly thirty years after it was made, but I only just now saw it for the first time and I'm sorely disappointed. I guess I'm one of these people who likes the remakes more than the origianls. I found that the acting stinks, the action is corny, and the special effects seemed bad even for 1978. The caracters seem to be living in this mall for a few weeks, and I felt like I was watching the film for a few weeks. It just seemed to drag and drag with nothing really happening. I knew I wasn't being overly critical of the film once I saw the scene where this biker gang starts smashing pies and spraying seltzer water into the faces of the zombies. I guess I'm just spoiled by todays makeup and special effects and CGI, but I'd recommend the NEW version of Dawn before this one.

5 out of 5 stars The Dead STILL Walk.......2007-05-30

What could/can be said about this amazing film has been said. If you love horror/zombie films and have not heard of this one or have seen it. Then what planet have you been living on? This IS one of the ten best films ever made. Buy it, watch it, be enthralled by it.

Ancient curses, all-powerful monsters, shape-changing assassins, scantily-clad stewardesses, laser battles, huge explosions, a perfect woman, a malcontent hero--what more can you ask of a big-budget science fiction movie? Luc Besson's high-octane film incorporates presidents, rock stars, and cab drivers into its peculiar plot, traversing worlds and encountering some pretty wild aliens. Bruce Willis stars as a down-and-out cabbie who must win the love of Leeloo (Milla Jovovich) to save Earth from destruction by Jean-Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg (Gary Oldman) and a dark, unearthly force that makes Darth Vader look like an Ewok. --Geoff Riley

The Road Warrior is already a classic, sans condescending genre distinctions like "sci-fi" or "action." But the story of Mel Gibson's stately antihero begins in Mad Max, George Miller's low-budget debut in which Max is a "Bronze" (cop) in an unspecified postapocalyptic future with a buddy-partner and family. But unlike most films set in the devastated future, Mad Max is especially notable because it is poised between our industrialized world and total regression to medieval conditions. The scale tips towards disintegration when the Glory Riders burn into town on their bikes like an overamped cadre of Brando's Wild Ones. Representing the active chaos that will eventually overwhelm the dying vestiges of civil society, they take everything dear to Max, who will exact due revenge. His flight into the same wilds that created the villains artfully sets up the morally ambiguous character of the subsequent films. --Alan E. Rapp

        Description

Setting Mel Gibson on a sure path to superstardom, this highly acclaimed "crazy collide-o-scope"(Newsweek) of highway mayhem "cinematically defined the postapocalyptic landscape" (TV Guide). Featuring eye-popping stunts that are "electrifying and very convincing" (Variety) and "an authentically nihilistic spirit" (The Village Voice), Mad Max is "pure cinematic poetry" (Time). In the ravaged near future, a savage motorcycle gang rules the road. Terrorizing innocent civilians while tearing up the streets, the ruthless gang laughs in the face ofa police force hell-bent on stopping them. But they underestimate one officer: Max Rockatansky (Gibson). And when the bikers brutalize Max's best friend and family, they send him into a mad frenzy that leaves him with only one thing left in the world to live forrevenge!

Inspired by Chris Marker's acclaimed short film La Jetée (which is included on the DVD Short 2: Dreams), 12 Monkeys combines intricate, intelligent storytelling with the uniquely imaginative vision of director Terry Gilliam. The story opens in the wintry wasteland of the year 2035, where a virulent plague has forced humans to live in a squalid, oppressively regimented underground. Bruce Willis plays a societal outcast who is given the opportunity to erase his criminal record by "volunteering" to time-travel into the past to obtain a pure sample of the deadly virus that will help future scientists to develop a cure. But in bouncing from 1918 to the early and mid-1990s, he undergoes an ordeal that forces him to question his own perceptions of reality. Caught between the dangers of the past and the devastation of the future, he encounters a psychiatrist (Madeleine Stowe) who is initially convinced he's insane, and a wacky mental patient (Brad Pitt in a twitchy Oscar-nominated role) with links to a radical group that may have unleashed the deadly virus. Equal parts mystery, tragedy, psychological thriller, and apocalyptic drama, 12 Monkeys ranks as one of the best science fiction films of the '90s, boosted by Gilliam's visual ingenuity and one of the finest performances of Willis's career. --Jeff Shannon

        4 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-06-04

I really liked the movie. One of the best sci-fi movies I have seen. But I have a question. When Madeleine Stowe calls up the number that Bruce Willis is supposed to call, and she reaches a carpet cleaning company she is overjoyed thinking that the virus plague is a hoax after all. She nevertheless leaves a message in the voice mail of that number and recounts it to Bruce Willis who of course has heard it before and repeats the message verbatim even before Stowe could finish telling him. The whole point of the film is that Bruce Willis is reliving the past exactly as it had happened, with him as one of the main protagonist. So what actually happened in 1996? Did Stowe call up the carpet cleaning company? Did she leave a message? If she did and repeated that to Willis did Willis know beforehand what her message was? If he knew, then how did he know? He was NOT time travelling THEN. He was just a little boy of 8 years. And if it was not Willis (Cole) in 1996 who Stowe (Railly) met, then who was it? Because Cole was 8 years old in 1996. Can anybody throw any light?

        5 out of 5 stars The Army of The 12 Monkey's Is Coming...Be Prepared.......2007-04-27

Terry Gilliam (Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) takes a typical "time travel" theory and twists it into one heck of a psychological thriller. The premise of the movie is rather interesting (if you're into sci-fi). Cole (Bruce Willis) is in the future (30 or so years?) in a world where only 1% of the population lives - all underground. He's imprisoned for random acts of violence we're slightly hinted towards in a dark, gloomy, odd underground Philadelphia prison. He is hand picked by the top scientists of the underground world to travel back in time to 1996 to gather information on the super-virus that was released in December 1996 by the army of the 12 Monkeys. Unfortunately he is sent back to 1990 Baltimore and finds himself put into a mental institution because, lets be honest, anybody that randomly shows up and is going on about collecting information about the virus that wipes out 5 billion people is obviously going to be thought to be a little nuts. At the institution he runs into Jeffrey (Brad Pitt) who is very insane (Oscar-nominated role in this movie) and "befriends" Cole as eventually helps him escape. In the process, Cole's psychiatrist Kathryn (Madeleine Stowe) feels an odd connection with him on a more spiritual level. She is convinced she knows him from somewhere. To speed it up, he goes back to the future and then goes BACK to 1996...there the story goes on...

All throughout, the movie takes Cole and twists his (and your) mind and starts to make him (and you) doubt if his "time-travel" experiences have actually happened...or was he just really insane. The movie is pretty straight forward in making it clear that he did go back in time, but you really go "or did he?" the whole time. It is really cool how everyone plays together and ties together. It twists your mind a lot, and you'll be biting your nails the whole time trying to figure out what will happen. The whole "dream" sequence that is seen throughout finally comes together at the end and its a CLASSIC "Wow...." scene. I have to say it was the coolest twist on modern sci-fi mind thrillers to date.

If you've seen the movie The Prestige, you'll see some similarities...some.

I'm Will Black, and thats my review of 12 Monkeys.

        5/5 Stars

4 out of 5 stars Great movie, lackluster HD DVD........2007-04-19

I've always loved the movie, and while it looks great in HD, it's very reminiscent of the first few DVDs that came out. It has quite a few defects just during normal playback, and the additional content is exactly the same as it is on the DVD... which looked bad on the original, and looks TERRIBLE now.

Unfortunately, there aren't many HD DVDs to choose from yet, but having your expectations set at a reasonable level can't hurt. :/ I suspect this one will be like the first Tron DVD release, and coming out a ways down the road (assuming the format survives) to compare against newer releases.

        5 out of 5 stars Cinematic satisfaction.......2007-03-30

The variety within this action-packed, futuristic thriller is loaded with ever changing elements that will keep you glued to the screen. After your stomach's in knots, the separate goals eventually unite in a race against time that will pull you into the action. Packed with surprises and intellectual stimulation, this film is not predictable. The elements will leave you satisfied and the shockingly realistic possibilities revealed will leave you thinking. Superb acting, writing, directing and production only add to the exciting cinematic ride. Well worth the watch.

5 out of 5 stars A great, fun, intelligent film I highly reccomend........2007-03-21

I very bleak but fun look at a dystopian future. A killer virus. Surreal story line and great actors like Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt. What's not to like?

From the blockbuster-making team who produced and directed PEARL HARBOR and THE ROCK (Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay) comes the biggest movie of 1998 -- ARMAGEDDON! Starring the explosive talents of Bruce Willis (DIE HARD), Academy Award(R)-winners Ben Affleck (GOOD WILL HUNTING) and Billy Bob Thornton (SLING BLADE), Liv Tyler (INVENTING THE ABBOTTS), Steve Buscemi (CON AIR), and Will Patton (INVENTING THE ABBOTTS), ARMAGEDDON is a meteor storm of action-adventure moviemaking that has you on the edge of your seat forgetting to breathe! When NASA's executive director, Dan Truman (Thornton), realizes the Earth has 18 days before it's obliterated by a meteor the size of Texas, he has only one option -- land a ragtag team of roughneck oil drillers on the asteroid and drop a nuclear warhead into its core. Spectacular special effects, laugh-out-loud humor, great characters, riveting storytelling, and heartfelt emotion make ARMAGEDDON an exhilarating thrill ride you'll want to experience like there's no tomorrow.

The latest testosterone-saturated blow-'em-up from producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Michael Bay (The Rock, Bad Boys) continues Hollywood's millennium-fueled fascination with the destruction of our planet. There's no arguing that the successful duo understands what mainstream American audiences want in their blockbuster movies--loads of loud, eye-popping special effects, rapid- fire pacing, and patriotic flag waving. Bay's protagonists--the eight crude, lewd, oversexed (but lovable, of course) oil drillers summoned to save the world from a Texas-sized meteor hurling toward the earth--are not flawless heroes, but common men with whom all can relate. In this huge Western-in-space soap opera, they're American cowboys turned astronauts. Sci-fi buffs will appreciate Bay's fetishizing of technology, even though it's apparent he doesn't understand it as anything more than flashing lights and shiny gadgets. Smartly, the duo also tries to lure the art-house crowd, raiding the local indie acting stable and populating the film with guys like Steve Buscemi, Billy Bob Thornton, Owen Wilson, and Michael Duncan, all adding needed touches of humor and charisma. When Bay applies his sledgehammer aesthetics to the action portions of the film, it's mindless fun; it's only when Armageddon tackles humanity that it becomes truly offensive. Not since Mississippi Burning have racial and cultural stereotypes been substituted for characters so blatantly--African Americans, Japanese, Chinese, Scottish, Samoans, Muslims, French ... if it's not white and American, Bay simplifies it. Or, make that white male America; the film features only three notable females--four if you count the meteor, who's constantly referred to as a "bitch that needs drillin'," but she's a hell of a lot more developed and unpredictable than the other women characters combined. Sure, Bay's film creates some tension and contains some visceral moments, but if he can't create any redeemable characters outside of those in space, what's the point of saving the planet? --Dave McCoy

In Independence Day, a scientist played by Jeff Goldblum once actually had a fistfight with a man (Bill Pullman) who is now president of the United States. That same president, late in the film, personally flies a jet fighter to deliver a payload of missiles against an attack by extraterrestrials. Independence Day is the kind of movie so giddy with its own outrageousness that one doesn't even blink at such howlers in the plot. Directed by Roland Emmerich, Independence Day is a pastiche of conventions from flying-saucer movies from the 1940s and 1950s, replete with icky monsters and bizarre coincidences that create convenient shortcuts in the story. (Such as the way the girlfriend of one of the film's heroes--played by Will Smith--just happens to run across the president's injured wife, who are then both rescued by Smith's character who somehow runs across them in alien-ravaged Los Angeles County.) The movie is just sheer fun, aided by a cast that knows how to balance the retro requirements of the genre with a more contemporary feel. --Tom Keogh
