Criminals

This unusual documentary consists mostly of criminals talking openly and apparently honestly about their crimes. The film begins by showing hapless smalltime miscreants, such as a dimwitted woman who talks about how she had enough experience "prostituting" not to have gotten picked up in a police sting operation. Most of the interview subjects are unapologetic, and things become disturbing as muggers talk about their violent rampages and how the feelings of their victims simply never entered their minds. The point is made that crime permeates society, and in a brief break from interviews, surveillance tapes are shown of church elders stealing thousands of dollars while counting money taken in collection plates, and airport baggage handlers rifling through luggage. As the interview material continues, the crimes being confessed become increasingly more serious, and the proceedings take on a much darker tone. A videotaped jailhouse interrogation with an obscenely defiant rapist is a startling and sickening look at someone who can only be described as pathological. In a later segment, the lack of emotion shown by a murderer is equally disturbing. As a relatively unfiltered look at how criminals see themselves, their victims, and their crimes, this is a fascinating, though often troubling piece of work. --Robert J. McNamara
Description
The shocking and powerful "Criminals" is a horrifying look at crime in America, using actual crime footage from police departments across the country and even from the criminals themselves. The film catches all sorts of lawbreakers in the act, ranging from a church elder with his hand in the till to a blood-chilling gang beating. We also see real-life interrogations, confessions and interviews with criminals guilty of serial rape, prostitution, murder, armed robbery and drug dealing. Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Joseph Strick (Ulysses, The Savage Eye).

Product Description
Actor Griffin Dunne improves a bit on his first film as a director, Addicted to Love, with this drama-comedy about a family of witches. Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock play spell-casting sisters of different temperaments: the former is a high-living, free-spirited sort, while Bullocks character is a homebody who can not get around a family curse that kills the men in their lives. A widowed single mom, Bullock gets into a jam with an abusive Bulgarian (Goran Visnjic) and is helped out by her sibling, but the result brings a good-looking, warm, inquisitive cop (Aidan Quinn) into their lives. The film has a variety of tonal changes--cute, scary, glum--that Dunne can not always effectively juggle. But the female-centric, celebratory nature of the film (the fantasies, the sharing, the witchy bonds) is infectious, and supporting roles by Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing as Kidman and Bullocks magical aunts are a lot of fun.

Shows the Positive Aspects of The Craft.......2007-07-03
Practical Magic is an underrated neo-classic, and should be in every witch's movie collection. With strong female characters like Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Aunt Frances (Stockard Channing), to name a few, it shows positive aspects of The Craft, especially when Sally tells Gary Hallet (Aidan Quinn) that "there is no devil in the craft." Although the magic in the movie is pure Hollywood (except for the herb gardens and celebrations, of course), it is definitely the best portrayal of witches out there in Tinseltown. It is one of my favorite movies ever, and I'm sure it'll become a classic for you, too.
My favorite witchey movie.......2007-06-21
This is my very favorite classic movie on witchcraft. I feel that it puts a positive spin on wicca (although it has been glamorized and fictional). I love that the romantic aspect is not overly done and mushy, and that the spiritual side is not over done to the point of scaring the children.
my family' s weider than your's.......2007-05-17
An old favorite, with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as members of a witchy family cursed in affairs of the heart. Bullock, as a non-willing practioner of the arts, gets pulled into a dark act striving to save her sister (Kidman) from her evil boyfriend (ER"s Gorin Vasnjic). Throw in some comic relief from their 2 aunts (Stockard Channing and Diane Wiest)and you have an irresistable chick flick. Something good for a girl's night in. Put the lime in the coconut for a midnight margherita.
Practical Magic Review.......2007-05-14
The ultimate feel-good-about-being-a-woman chick-flick about three generations of women with magical powers. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are two beautiful sisters with flowing hair who are bound by a dark secret. Consumed by the intoxicating power of love, they call upon the power of womanhood to set them free.
Magical!.......2007-05-10
Practical Magic is all about two witches with a curse put on them :whenever they love a man that man will die.
I found it a bit scary at some places but the idea is so clever.the two girls are best friends (or sisters,i cant remember) one of them is very serious and the other isnt, she finds herself a boyfriend that keeps hitting her and so they accidently "kill him" or so they think.i wont ruin the story but it is absoloutly excellent,a genius thought of thr story.
Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock have never been better.

Thanks to the ambitious vision of director Tim Burton, the blockbuster hit of 1989 delivers the goods despite an occasionally spotty script, giving the caped crusader a thorough overhaul in keeping with the crime fighter's evolution in DC Comics. Michael Keaton strikes just the right mood as the brooding "Dark Knight" of Gotham City; Kim Basinger plays Gotham's intrepid reporter Vicki Vale; and Jack Nicholson goes wild as the maniacal and scene-stealing Joker, who plots a takeover of the city with his lethal Smilex gas. Triumphant Oscar-winning production design by the late Anton Furst turns Batman into a visual feast, and Burton brilliantly establishes a darkly mythic approach to Batman's legacy. Danny Elfman's now-classic score propels the action with bold, muscular verve. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Jack Nicholson is the Joker, who emerged from a horrible accident as a maniacal criminal. Michael Keaton is the Caped Crusader, who emerged from a childhood trauma to become a masked crimefighter. Welcome to Gotham..........2007-07-08
Let me tell you a story, and take you back in time.
The year, was 1986. The world had last known Batman as Adam West, a campy, blue caped superhero who fought the likes of a silly goofball named the Joker, among others, whilst passing on good advice to his good natured compadre, Robin. His use of puns, bad one liners and amusing dance routines genuinely made people laugh, and unfortunately reinforced the idea that the Batman was nothing more than a wierd man in a costume, masquerading around town with his teenage pals.
A man named Michael Uslan had been trying for years, as one of his life's pursuits, to awaken to the world a different vision of Batman, in his opinion, and many others, the real vision of Batman, as a Dark Guardian of his city, striking terror into the hearts of criminals as he stalked the city rooftops, protecting the innocent.
Finally, with the help of a well funded producer, and the creator of Batman himself, Bob Kane, Michael Uslan managed to get Warner Bros. to accept the possibility of making a serious Batman film.
And so the great wheel began to turn, towards a date in 1989 when the world rediscovered a hero.
Fast forward to the summer of 1989 and you'll find thousands of fans, dressed in Batman tshirts and hats, waiting to see this mega-blockbuster movie.
The first Batman movie portrays the Dark Knight as Adam West never could, opening the eyes of people everywhere to a stoic, avenging man whose quest to defeat evil in his city has lead him to become a terrifying creature of the night, The Batman. Micheal Keaton uses his talents to portray Batman as a driven man, one who masquerades as just a social billionaire in the daytime, all the while waiting to descend into another life, the one he truly wants to live. Dark and mysterious, Tim Burton's vision of the Batman encompasses the best of the comics that inspired him, portraying an avenging guardian angel, whose only purpose is to defend the weak and innocent people of his city.
Jack Nicholson portrays an insane, but brilliant madman, the Joker, who terrorizes the citizens of Gotham with his cruel and deadly jokes.
Tim Burton redefines all the elements of Batman's world, and brings them to the big screen in a way never before seen by audiences. An engaging, twisting and turning plot drives the characters and the film to a satisfying ending that will have you wishing it was Halloween, so you too could put on the cape and cowl of the Batman.
All in all, the first Batman movie is by far one of the best, and it captures Batman as he was always meant to be captured, as the Dark Knight we all know today.
A very mixed bag that's ultimately not up to snuff.......2007-07-03
Batman is one of the most pivotal comic book characters ever. From his humble beginnings Batman was a dark and grim character, and through the years we have seen him go into a lighter image on screen with the cartoons and television shows. Its like the average person on the street never really got to know the true Batman until now. I had so much hope for this movie, but ultimately it was a let down. While the imagery, soundtrack and special effects were superb other aspects of script and production made this more than just a mixed bad. It was a mess.
Lets first talk about the good stuff like the backdrop and designs for this movie. Gotham city never looked cooler. That goes the same for batman. When you see him first appear in the shadows you definitely get the idea of what Batman was supposed to really be like. There is an interesting use of color, lighting and shadow that give the movie a very stylized and comic book feel to it. Other designs like the Batmobile, the Batcave and Batmans various gadgets are equally impressive and are definitely things I wouldnt mind having& if I knew how to use them properly. And as if to only top off the spellbinding design of the movie you get what has become one of the most grand and memorable soundtracks of any superhero show. What more could you want?
Plenty. You would think Tim Burton would do a full out grim and gritty Batman like the true fans of the character were looking for. As a matter of fact for the first 30 minutes we got that to the hilt. In that first half hour the movie is an amazing combination of all that design style as well as the perfect feeling of Batman being the ultimate crime fighter. What happens after that changes the tone of the movie into something that falls between gritty and camp. Instead of continuing the coolness and mystery of the Dark Knight you get stuff that seems more appropriate from the 60s television show& only done darker. Yeah you can say its because thats how The Joker was written. Well he was written wrong in my eyes and seems more like an aloof copout in the script-writing department. From then on the movie slips into just another Hollywood plot placating to the crowd, giving up all opportunities they had to truly stand out.
The acting is pretty good, but I cant help but think the choice of actors was strange. Keaton seemed an odd choice but he did do the part admirably. He just didnt really look the part. Jack Nicholson as The Joker& I dont think so. Instead of getting the type of Joker I know from the books and previous shows we get& well& Jack Nicholson. He might as well be calling himself Jack instead of Joker. I didnt even think Jack Palance, whom I love as an actor, fit well in this movie. Actually I cant think of any actor in this film other than * (who played Alfred the butler) and * (who played the police chief) who really fit here.
Basically this version of Batman is quite a departure from the mythos that was known before it. Tim Burton was pretty open about that, but the problem I have is its too different and ultimately didnt entertain me. If you have no previous conceptions of Batman or are open minded enough to see a very different rendition of that story then you might end up enjoying this. If you were hungrily waiting for a truly nail-biting and serious Batman movie then look at the more recent Batman Begins.
Dig that Bat mobile!.......2007-07-02
Well, I've had this tape for a couple of years and just got finished watching it half an hour ago for probably the third time. I'd have to say (because I still find it interesting) that constitutes the movie being art.
PROS:
1. Ok writing, that's a star.
2. Ok acting and at times a little better, that's a star.
3. Ok directing and that's a star.
4. Neat idea handle ok, sometimes better. That's another star.
5. Neat modeling, music (for the Batman scenes) right on target, that's a star.
CONS:
1. The truth is, I and anybody else could pick this and most movies apart and suggest changes, additions, subtractions or out and right distruction or run it up the flag pole and see who salutes. In this case it is a popcorn movie and not to be take as serious as Casablanca. Therefore I see no reason to chop or pick it apart. The only real question is, is Batman entertaining? Was it interesting enough to see a couple more times? If so, then it did its duty enough to be called art, (provided it is original).
Batman is art. It isn't on the same level as Casablanca, but what is! It's a popcorn movie and because it came out, and had such a big reception, the industry tried to make other Batman type and style movies.
My favorite scenes? Fast-forward until the girl gets into the Batmobile
and watch that thunderbolt go down the road progressively faster, and the music was perfect for that scene. I think the scene should have lasted another ten to twenty seconds longer and the Batmobile should have gotten progressively even faster. But in the beginning, when they were driving through the forest road (with all the fallen leaves) it looked as if they were only going fourty miles per hour. (I know it was only a gas powered model). By the time they hit that last stretch the Batmobile couldn't have been doing over 100. I know that's fast even for a model in scale miles per hour BUT...well, its is a jet powered car. You know a real race car at the Indie 500 start off at 200 mph just to qualify. The Batmobile is Jet powered...and it's just a model and just a movie...I wish you guys had--you know--got it up there where a bowshock pressure wave had been visible.
Oh well, so what.
I still like the movie despite a few flaws. The Joker gave a fine performance no matter what anybody says, and the other Jack played his part well--Palance always has (I hope I spelled that right). So, I give this popcorn popper a five star rating and recommend it to all of us who still haven't sold out our taste.
Bye!
Batman VS. Batman Begins.......2007-06-20
The other reviews contained here seem to divide into preferring Burton's original "Batman" vs the new "Batman Begins". I have some thoughts on this.
First, let me say I much prefer Burton's film. I find it's baroque theatricality far more interesting and entertaining than "Begins" attempt to shoehorn Bruce Wayne/Batman into something like the real world. It always seemed to me the approach on "Batman" was to ask "what kind of world could have created these people?". "Begins" approach is to ask "what would these people be like in the real world?". I suspect that the "Begins" franchise may run into significant problems as it tries to reconcile some of Batman's more exotic villains into that reality.
Despite having no super powers, Batman is a mythic character. He doesn't belong in everyday reality. None of Burton's films are set in reality. Like myths and fairy-tales, they exist in a parallel reality that informs our own.
The last point I'll include here is the CHARACTER of Batman himself (not the actors or their performances: they're both excellent).
By the end of "Begins" he has pretty much overcome his childhood traumas (bats & loss of parents) and the decision to become/remain Batman is a conscious, rational choice. (What a swell guy.)
That's OK, but not nearly as interesting as what they did in "Batman". In Burton's films he is almost like a drug addict. There is no altruism here. He MUST be Batman to deal with his inner demons. Repression creates perversion and 'Batman' is what has oozed out of the cracks in Bruce Wayne's psyche. Anyone who has to create as elaborate a coping mechanism as Batman must be really screwed up. Wayne must be Batman or go mad. Perhaps he has done both. Burton's version of Batman may be less "real" but it is far more human.
Oh, yeah. Also- Danny Elfman's score rocks and the Batmobile in "Begins" sucks!
Fairly awful rendition of Batman.......2007-06-01
Tim Burton's "Batman" is celebrated as a classic and the best Batman movie... mostly by people who saw it sometime in the past and can't remember it. The movie doesn't hold up today. For trying to craft a realistic Batman, much of the movie makes no sense.
Batman, who is supposed to be an agile fighter and a fearsome force is too stiff, getting repeatedly shot (conveniently into his body armor), gets beat up by regular thugs, has his plane shot down by a handgun and for the most part, can hardly seem to move in his suit. And since when did Batman unapologetically kill without remorse?
Nicholson's Joker is just as bad. Nicholson, in typical fashion, takes over the movie with his larger than life ego, and plays a Joker that wants to be funny and often lacks motivation. In one scene, the Joker randomly hosts a street parade and hands out money while Prince plays in the background. How very faithful Burton is to the comics.
Kim Basinger's character spends one night with Bruce Wayne and instantly falls in love with him, even though their relationship is never fleshed out while Alfred proclaims her to be "special." So the all secretive Bruce Wayne is willing to give up his secret identity to a woman he has known for a few hours?
The movie just doesn't make sense. The action scenes are terrible, Batman has no motivation and is impotent in many scenes, Nicholson was a terrible casting choice and jumps in logic are standard. Check out Batman Begins instead.

Transformed into a superhuman entity with shape-shifting powers and quick regeneration capabilities, Simmons (soon to be dubbed "Spawn" by Malebolgia's crony, The Violator) returns to Earth and attempts to reunite with Wanda, not knowing that five years have passed. He also seeks revenge on his former boss and killer, Jason Wynn (Martin Sheen), who has made a deal with The Violator to develop a lethal virus to take over the world, where Wynn is promised to be king.
Spawn wages an inner battle between good and evil as he tries to come to terms with selling his soul and what it could mean for humankind. Despite excellent effects and great potential, Spawn seems to come up short. While White certainly displays verve in his characterization of the twisted hero, he cannot overcome some forced dialogue. On the flip side, the usually engaging John Leguizamo portrays the sinister Violator--an evil monster masquerading as a rotund, weird-looking clown--as an irritating lackey who spews overbearing sarcasm and incessantly banal one-liners. Admitted, many of Spawn's action sequences are fun, and the transitions effectively brisk, but more could have been done to explore how Simmons grapples with his humanity in these daunting circumstances. But if you want sizzling action sequences and digital effects, this film should keep you happy. --Bryan Reesman

pixelated photos on the cover art box.......2007-07-02
Just received this dvd from amazon, and I wanted to point out that all the pictures in the cover box are pixelated!!! I just found this strange and wanted to share it with anybody that is considering in buying this product.
A Super Hero brother with Attitude. Need I say more?.......2007-04-06
Gotta support the brother. I think Michael Jai White is a great fighting and is wonderful in this movie. I also love the character of Spawn. A black superhero with an attitude. Wish we had more. Love it.
I own Spawn on VHS - now purchasing DVD because I loved it!!!.......2007-04-03
I decided to express my view on the Spawn movie, VHS, after I read some pathetic reviews posted here; one compared it to Spiderman, YUCH! {First let me say the Spiderman movie sucked. I found it too cartoonish and juvenile with exposed cow-teats from the get-go to sexually arouse and harass children, adolescents and immature adults.]
Now on to Spawn. I loved Spawn, VHS. I found the CGI, bluescreen {whatever) to be well done BUT NOT OVERDONE. I found the movie content to be mature and comical. I also enjoyed seeing an African American in the title role of a quality film; which is certainly not the norm.
Summarizing, I DO NOT enjoy seeing women expose their private parts for sexual harassment [that's what ADULT saloons and burlesque is for] and I do not enjoy cartoonish film [animated]; I prefer action movies to be REAL ACTION, Ala Daniel Craig in Casino Royale, WELL DONE!
Best of the Genre.......2007-03-20
To date, this is the best comic book-to-movie conversion. It retains it's comic book feel. In this sense, it could be compared with Pulp Fiction's portrayal of the pop "dime-novel." The banal one-liners can be seen as a plus in this regard. The special effects are very good, and ohhhh, that cape! If you like movies about comic book characters, don't miss this one. It's at least as good as Spiderman, another good example of the genre.
Great Movie!!.......2007-01-31
The whole family loved this movie. The special effects were great. If you like the Marvel comic movies you will want to see this one.

A flawed but stylish adaptation of the Chester Gould comic strip by director Warren Beatty, who also stars in the title role. The minimalist plot involves a battalion of baddies who confront the intrepid detective in a series of strung-together vignettes. Al Pacino is a comedic if overblown standout as Big Boy Caprice, and Madonna simply smolders as aggressive blonde bombshell Breathless Mahoney. It matters not that the plot is Spartan, as this dazzling eye candy is much enhanced by Stephen Sondheim's songs, including the Academy Award-winning ditty, "Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man)." Beatty took his cue from the source material and concentrated on the relationships between these people, whether strained, romantic, or hateful. The performances are subtle and more amusing than you would expect from such a visually bold picture. Shot in bright, primary colors, this also won Oscars for Best Art/Set Direction and Makeup (for those inventively hideous criminals). Watch for well-known names, such as Dustin Hoffman and Dick Van Dyke, in cameo appearances and supporting roles. --Rochelle O'Gorman
Description
Legendary police detective Dick Tracy is the only man tough enough to take on gangster boss Big Boy Caprice and his band of menacing mobsters. Dedicated to his work but at the same time devoted to his loyal girlfriend, Tess Trueheart, Tracy find himself torn between love and duty. His relentless crusade against crime becomes even more difficult when he gets saddled with an engaging orphan and meets seductive and sultry Breathless Mahoney, a torch singer determined to get the best of Tracy. A faceless character, the Blank, threatens both Tracy and Big Boy, and it takes all of Tracy's skills to save the city.

A good movie with lots of known players. Good clean fun. Brings back the good old days. Enjoyable.
Great movie for the dectective at heart.......2007-05-15
Dick Tracy is an action packed classic detective story. The movie features loads of bad guys that each has a unique visual presence throughout the movie. Warren Beatty gives a realistic and believable performance as Dick Tracy himself. For those looking for some nostalgic Madonna action, look no further. She's stylish and sexy in those black outfits she wears.
If you're looking for a fun night at the movies, this is a winner!
Dick Tracy.......2007-05-13
Excellent film! Excellent soundtrack! Seen it time and time again.
Why Marvell Cariaga is listed as the main star, I have no idea. Warren Beatty is the main character.
a good film bad judgement.......2007-02-25
why is itevery time beatty enters the picture with a film hes gotta louse it up by acting in it i know he like to look at himself in the mirror but so dose every other director look at george lucas for example and you dont see him screwing all his films up well not all his films any way take this picture for instantce it could do without the love story and stick to the point of the plot getting caprice this is why sin city was great it stuck to the point second nobody cares for madonna somebody else that could have stayed out of this film ive read dick tracy its no brodway comic strip or disney for that matter frank miller should have taken over the screenplay and did it justice.hopefully somebody else will remake this film but with beatty fighting to ruin the strip yet again in court that wont be happening anytime soon.
Film/Comic Book Noir at its Best.......2007-01-28
With great performances from Al Pacino to Dustin Hoffman, music by Sondheim and Danny Elfman, and beautiful colors and costumes, this is a truly unique and highly enjoyable movie each time you watch it.

The first Batman sequel takes a wicked turn with the villainous exploits of the freakish and mean-spirited Penguin (Danny DeVito), whose criminal collaboration with evil tycoon Max Shreck (Christopher Walken) threatens to drain Gotham City of its energy supply. As if that weren't enough, Batman (Michael Keaton) has his hands full with the vengeful Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer), who turns out to be a lot more dangerous than a kitten with a whip. As with the first Batman feature, director Tim Burton brings his distinct visual style to the frantic action, but this time there's a darker malevolence lurking beneath all that extraordinary production design. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Gotham City faces two monstrous criminal menaces: the bizarre, sinister Penguin (Danny DeVito) and the slinky, mysterious Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer). Can Batman (Michael Keaton) battle two formidable foes at once? Especially when one wants to be mayor and the other is romantically attracted to Bruce Wayne! Like the groundbreaking 1989 original, Batman Returns is directed by the wizardly Tim Burton. And like the first blockbuster, it's a dazzling adventure that leaves you breathless.
DVD Features:
Documentaries:The Cinematic Saga of Batman, Shadows of the Bat Pt. 4 Beyond Batman Documentary Gallery
Featurette:The Heroes and Villains Profile Galleries
Interviews:The Bat, The Cat, and the Penguin
Music Video:Face to Face by Souixsie and the Bashees

A total failure except for production design and score........2007-06-19
Batman Returns followed the amazing Edward Scissorhands. And it showed that Tim Burton could not translate his personal vision to megabudget Hollywood fare. It is a grating, unfunny, depressingly awful film that virtually no one in their right mind would recommend. Audiences knew it, critics knew it.
The positives: The cat suit looks amazing, and Michelle Pfeiffer was a good choice. This was one of the first films that featured Dolby Digital encoding and it sounds to this day, 15 years later, incredible -- particualarly with Danny Elfman's Ed Scissorhands rip-off score. Bo Welch has ideas to spare, some of them great (Selina's apartment, The Penguin's political hideout) some of them not so great (the ridiculously overdesigned Gotham City, Joe Versus the Volcano air-conditioning units). But onto the really bad:
The Penguin is a disaster of Tim Burton's doing, where we see him attempt to expand one of his little pen and ink cariciatures into something capable of empathy amd humor. Yet he's patently ridiculous; pathetic, juvenile, and mean-spirited, Burton's character fails by every measure and is a complete bore. Trying to kill all of Gotham's babies? Really a lame criminal plot, out of place in this kind of movie and a new low. He is not a character that illicits much more than disgust. No matter how you slice it, that's not what you want for your arch-villain.
Catwoman gets the only great scene in the movie, her transformation. The campy sense of humor, music, and acting all gel for about five minutes. Otherwise, the Gloria Steinam in latex bit is silly. Daniel Waters: nice try. Michelle Pfeiffer manages to make it just tolerable enough. But if you are going to go the dominatrix route, let's see her really mess with Batman's head.
The plot is convoluted and nonsensical. There's not much to say other than Daniel Waters simply has no idea what he is doing in this three-ring circus. That empty-calorie feeling you get after watching Batman Returns? Look no further. I don't think Burton knows or cares. Listening to his commentary is not encouraging.
I loved it.......2007-06-06
I've been a superhero fan since the 1950's. I just have to buy just about every superhero movie on DVD.
My tastes are pretty basic. I go by the way the movie makes me feel. Do I get a good sense of the character? Are the effects decent? Is the whole thing "believable," in the sense of superhero comics?
I didn't like some of the later Batman movies. This is the first Batman movie I've bought so far.
I love this one... it's more along the spirit of the Dark Knight.
If they release another one similar to this "Feel," I'll buy it.
Beautifully Made.......2007-05-09
this is a real classic. tim burton did an amazing job like he allwayz does. i also reccomend beetle juice.
Question rather than an actual review.......2007-05-02
That's why only the 4 stars cause I believe this movie is great. However, why is there no grey lettering and outline? It looks like this is the same movie from the "Legacy" collection, rather than the Special Editions. I wouldn't want to order this and get the single disk edition. So my question is, which version is this?
For the Kids. . .But Still Pretty Amusing.......2007-04-08
I never really got Tim Burton. To me he is not much more than a populistic Fellini, a man child with an over active imagination along with the vision and skill to make it look appealing on screen. However, he is the favorite director of some of my closest friends so to say that he doesn't know how to connect with people would be off base. Here he tackles Gotham for a second time and his vision of it a quite festive. The criminals walk on stilts while juggling fire and wearing gaudy skeleton masks. The streets are filled with giant statues that invoke Ayn Rand. And the roofs are incredibly weak, which is convenient because people love crashing through them in this town. It all looks great and I did like this movie but, and forgive me for saying this, it was more of the same from Burton, too much surface.
Here Batman battles Catwoman and The Penguin, two villains who really despise him although we are never really given a firm reason why. The other main player is Shreck (no relation to the ogre, played here by Christopher Walken) a Donald Trump type who has risen to the top by breaking laws and breaking necks. When he first meets up with Penguin he is called out for his corporate malfeasance so he does what any other self-respecting tycoon would do, he buys him off. From there they hatch a plan, similar to Bush's 9-11 plan, where together they screw up the city in a bid to get Penguin elected puppet Mayor of Gotham. And hey, in a world of McConnell and Lott he would hardly be the worst publicly elected official out there. This leads to some funny scenes where they try to incorporate Penguin into the world of politics, but the best he can muster is to lustfully leer at any female that walks by and to eat the nose off of his image consultant. To defeat Batman is the ultimate plan and for a while he is bested by the shapely Penguin, and when I say shapely I mean round. Time and again Batman is humiliated, his pride being a major liability, and soon it appears as though it is Batman alone who is sending the city down the tubes. So while I sat through the Wrong Man plot for the 150th time ("Batman pushed her off the roof!!"), I also had to sit through some serious fat chewing sessions between Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle (Catwoman) as they discuss the pros and cons of duality. Of course when she isn't trying to pick Bruce up she is unleashing a litany of back flips and bad double entendres ("Be gentle it's my first time") on his alter ego. I understand bad one liners are the name of the game because the average fan is 8 years old (in mind and/or body) but this script really went for the gold with them.
More than anything I am recommending this film for the Penguin and all his disgusting, creepy glory. This film had you believe that he truly believed that he was a ladies man and possible mayoral candidate. The fighting is more of the bang zoom variety as opposed to the more realistic, violent kind that Christopher Nolan rolled with in "Batman Begins." So while this one is nothing special it is worth a look for its creative set design and guilty pleasure appeal. Burton never took the franchise to the heights that Nolan did, but he never sank it like Joel Schumacher did either. So while you watch be sure to count your blessings that rubber lips are nowhere to be found. ***1/4

Sometimes it's hard to tell if The Mask (or Jim Carrey's in-your-face mugging in general) is actually funny, or just bizarre and grotesque. And sometimes it just doesn't matter. Carrey plays a shy, Jerry Lewis-like nerd who discovers an ancient mask that magically transforms him into a green-faced, zoot-suited Tex Avery cartoon character with no inhibitions. As Roger Ebert said of Carrey in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, the actor performs "as if he's being clocked on an Energy-O-Meter, and paid by the calorie expended." If that's your kind of humor, you'll love The Mask; if not, you may need a valium or two to sit through this one. --Jim Emerson

Charlie's Vision.......2007-05-18
Watching this movie with the director's comments you learn that the operating budget for the film was 18 million dollars. Also the studio almost cut the 'Cuban Pete' scene until early screenings revealed it to be the most popular scene in the movie. Jim Carrey is actually singing however Cameron Diaz, who performs earlier is not. Charlie Russel does not say Cameron Diaz isn't singing but his silence during her performance spoke volumes to me. 18 million is an incredible figure because that amount of money would currently be required to get Carrey or Diaz in any movie that wasn't pure voice over work. The Mask is entirely Charles Russel's vision minus 2 deleted scenes. The scene where Peggy is brutally slain was rightfully deleted. The scene where Leif Erickson discovers America by accident as a byproduct of the cursed masks' disposal could have stayed in but would have begged a revisitation of sorts so was cut for brevity and cohesion. Carrey is sympathetic as Ipcus and hilarious as the Mask. The talented supporting cast misses no notes. Cameron Diaz has never been more alluring on camera. Many successful movies have employed surreal period themes. The Mask uses a circa 1940's theme to good effect. This movie was under rated in it's day but has stood the test of time and still represents Carrey's most cohesive and compelling comedy performance. The movie is also a lesson to studios that over meddle in decisions that are creative. As a result 'The Mask' is a much better movie than 'Bruce Almighty' even tho the budgets for the two films were 40 million dollars apart.
LOCO POR TI JIM CAREY!.......2007-05-14
This is one of my fav movies of all times, i can watch it over and over again, it was the same humor as ace ventura but of course i think ace ventura is a lil bit more funny. Anyways, this cool dvd comes in widescreen version and has spanish, french and english subtitles and English audio only. It has many cool features and the quality is exellent
We all wear Masks metaphorically speaking.......2007-03-11
This was the movie that made me love Jim Carrey. What an excellent use of his physical comedic abilities. The story line is very simple: Stanley Ipkiss aka Mr Nice Guy gains almost unlimited confidence when he puts on a strange mask he discovered in a river one night. The Mask, the character he transforms into is able to change shape, size, create things from nothing and blends the sublime from slapstick cartoons with real live action scenes. This was the 2nd hit movie after the breakthrough Ace Ventura role in the same year.
Some people may or may not know but this was also the film in which Cameron Diaz made her feature film debut. She has never looked better since. Even in the two Charlie's Angels film she does not look as good as this. And the open sequence where she is introduced must be one of those rare moments in cinematic history with a great use of the camera.
Overall this is a hilarious farce from beginning to end. Jim Carrey is absolutely brilliant in both characters, the meek and mild Stanley Ipkiss, and the wild and crazy Mask. I think we all wish that we could sometimes embrace a wilder side within ourselves because it allows us feel more alive. This is a classic in modern comedy and for anyone who's a Jim Carrey fan.
This film produced a spin off cartoon series for a short while. The sad part is the sequel didn't feature Jim and I refused to watch it for that very reason.
A final thought there is two dance sequences which stand out. And Jim does all his own dance moves in this film for which I think one must certainly applaud him.
"Boom-Chick-e-Boom,... Boom-Chick-e-Boom....".......2006-12-13
I am not a big fan of Jim Carrey, animation mixed with live action, or Cameron Diaz. Despite all this, The Mask is a favorite of mine and gets five stars because of a series of intangibles I'll list below:
1. Attitude. This movie never takes itself too seriously. Its sole reason for exisiting is to have fun and make you laugh. I think some movies acquire an "attitude" that can permeate all of the performances and seep into the experience of the viewer. This was definitely the case here. Kudos to the Director and the entire cast and crew, who made this film experience a good time and alot of laughs from beginning to end!
2. Supporting Cast. Like all great comedies, the supporting cast has a big if not bigger role than the "name" comedian. From Art Carney and Audrey Meadows in the Honeymooners, to Jason Alexander and Julia Dreyfuss in Seinfeld. In the Mask, I particularly loved the performances of Peter Riegert as the Leutenant, Richard Jeni as Stanley's pal, and of course, that Russel Terrier as Milo. Great performance by Milo as he swims away with the mast in the last scene.
3. Song and Dance. Many reviewers overlook this fabulous part of the Mask. The dancing is fantastic, from Stanley's dance with Cameron's character at the Coco Bongo Club, to the fabulous "Cuban Pete" extravaganza in the street out side the park. Outstanding. The soundtrack definitely enhanced the movie for me.
4. The story line. I don't know why so many reviewers thought the plot was lame. It worked for me.
Anyway, don't discount this movie if you aren't a Jim Carrey fan. Rent it, sit back and relax. You'll enjoy it.
The many faces of Jim Carrey.......2006-10-25
I felt this was a great performance on the part of Jim Carrey, but the plot lacked for me. One shouldn't expect reality in a Carrey film, but it would have been nice to have seen this done a little more sensably. The plot is there, and boils down to make a point but I guess this really just isn't my cup of tea. This production was very well done with great visual effects, good acting, casting and a lot of comedy. The real hero of this film, is of course the dog who gives an academy award performance. I think he might have actually stolen the lead from Carrey on this one. Not a very thought provoking film, but funny and entertaining. I recommend it to anyone who loves outlandish, far-fetched comedy.

Though it will always be remembered as the movie featuring the "other" Hannibal Lecter, Michael Mann's 1986 thriller Manhunter is nearly as good as The Silence of the Lambs, and in some respects it's arguably even better. Based on Thomas Harris's novel Red Dragon, which introduced the world to the nefarious killer Hannibal "the Cannibal" Lecter, the film stars William Petersen (giving a suitably brooding performance) as ex-FBI agent Will Graham, who is coaxed out of semiretirement to track down a serial killer who has thwarted the authorities at every turn.
Graham's approach to the case is a perilous one. First he seeks counsel with Lecter (Brian Cox) in the latter's high-security prison cell--an encounter that is utterly horrifying in its psychological effect--and then he begins to mold his own psyche to that of the killer, with potentially devastating results. As directed by Mann (who was at the acme of his success with TV's Miami Vice), this sophisticated cat-and-mouse game never resorts to the compromise of cheap thrills. Predating Anthony Hopkins's portrayal of Lecter by four years, Cox plays the character closer to Harris's original, lower-key conception, and he's no less compelling in the role. Petersen is equally well cast, and as always Mann employs rock music to astonishing effect, using nearly all of Iron Butterfly's heavy-metal epic "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" to accompany the film's heart-stopping climactic sequence. All of this makes Manhunter one of the finest films of its kind, as well as further proof that Harris's fiction is a blessing to any filmmaker brave enough to adapt it. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Witness the birth of evil. This eerie, very intense (New York) thriller from writer-director Michael Mann (Heat, The Insider) first introduced the world to the cunning, unforgettable serial killer named Hannibal. Joan Allen and Stephen Lang co-star in this dark locomotive ofa film (Los Angeles Times) that promises to keep viewers riveted (Time)!Former FBI profiler Will Graham (William Petersen, CSI ) reluctantly returns to his old job to track a horrific serial killer known as the 'tooth Fairy. But in order to get into the mind of this maniac, Graham must face another: Hannibal, the imprisoned psychiatrist whose own insanity almost cost Graham his life and whose insights into the Tooth Fairy could prove as dangerous as the killer himself.
Customer Reviews:
The best of the Hanibal Lecter movies!!!.......2007-04-18
I bought this DVD a few years ago and I haven't had any of the problems that some of the new editions have. That said, This is a great movie in every respect. The acting is top-notch all through. I don't think that Red Dragon can stand up to this movie at all, despite its star-power. I am a huge fan of Edward Norton but William Pederson is much better. You can really feel him getting deeper and deeper into the case. The scene where he realizes that Dollarhyde has seen the videos is one of the best ever. No one can take the place of the great Anthony Hopkins, but Brian Cox does a great job as Lecter. I read the book Red Dragon quite a few years ago so I knew that the ending in Manhunter was not true to the book, but it was still terrific, especially with the use of "In-a-gadda-da vida" in the scene.
One isuue I would like to talk about is the next-to-last scene in which Graham (Pederson) goes to the house of the would-be victims and tells them that they would have been next. Many people thought this scene was unnecesssary (why tell them anything at all?) I think the reason it was put in was to make the audience think for a split second that Graham went there to kill them. Remember that the reason they brought him in was because he could get into the mind of a serial killer.
William Peterson is highly under-rated!!.......2007-03-28
If you think, as I did, that Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal was over-the-top, and a caricature of a serial killer, then you too will LOVE "Manhunter." This film's Hannibal was so subtle that the actor probably gave ppl the creeps on the subway for years. He is also under-rated...I'm sure you film geeks know his name...
Just see it, and see how much BETTER (not "nearly as good," as the descr states) it is than "Silence." And DO NOT EVER spend any money supporting the remake, which is such a joke that I am still laughing...
That's my short version.
They don't make em' like this anymore........2007-03-28
I am one of those people who typically leans towards the original version of a movie. To put it nicely, I hate remakes. Well, the same applies to this great movie. "Red Dragon" isn't even close to being as good as "Manhunter". To me, "Manhunter" is a contemporary classic in the truest sense. Michael Mann can do no wrong, and certainly hits the nail on the head with this flick.
Now, this movie is 20+ years old, but ages perfectly. I will even go as far as to say I like this movie more than SOTL. That doesn't mean it's a better movie, just more favorable to me. "Manhunter" really is creapy, more than SOTL.
The music is perfectly scary, the way Mann directed the cameras to cue when "Graham" flicks on the light of the bedroom of the first murder scene we see is so shocking. And really, this movie is probably the first of it's kind in regards to showing forensics, criminal profiling, and in-depth FBI usage.
Another cool thing Mann does is when he uses the quick camera movements. I can't describe it really, but for example when "Graham" is slaying the dragon so to speak at the end, you see several of these quick camera movements. It's really interesting style and works great.
This movie also gives us the introduction to one of the most diabolical villians in the history of cinema, Dr. Hannibal Lector. Not played this time by Anthony Hopkins, but brilliantly by Brian Cox. Cox does a wonderful job. Maybe not as good as Hopkins in SOTL, but better than Hopkins in "Hannibal" or "Red Dragon".
Most people are disappointed to know that Lector is already in jail in this one, but that makes his character even more mysterious. All you know is that Special Agent Will Graham caught him and sort of how he caught him. That formula worked well with "Manhunter" and SOTL. But when he escaped and was on the lose, the movies sunk tremendously ("Hannibal" and "Red Dragon").
I highly recommend this movie. If you liked the SOTL series or "Miami Vice" or "Thief" or any other Michael Mann stuff, you will absolutely love "Manhunter". It will not disappoint. It really is a brilliant movie.
"No beast so fierce but knows some touch of pity." "But I know none, and therefore I am no beast." Richard III, Act 1, Scene 2.......2007-03-06
Francis Dollarhyde has to be one of the more disturbing and chilling villains in modern day literature and cinema. Abused and damaged as a child to a point where only a series of rudimentary, barely functioning social masks takes the place of a whole man, Dollarhyde hides the savage pathology of a serial killer who annihilates entire families to fuel his twisted desire and impossible longing.
Although "Manhunter" is less true to Thomas Harris' book "Red Dragon," and the 2002 film version with the same name, I found it to be a vastly superior film. Despite its retro `80's fashion and the distinctive pastels and sun-drenched look of Michael Mann's work during his Miami Vice television series days, you will find a film that cuts through the meat, slicing through the bone and exposing the marrow. Tom Noonan's performance has to be one of the most haunting and pitiable on celluloid. Noonan delivers the tortured, damaged and ultimately unsalvageable soul of Francis Dollarhyde in a way that even Harris' book didn't convey. He is a howling soul in Hell--a grotesque who is driven by his delusions.
William Peterson is Will Graham, a former FBI profiler, who retired after a near death encounter in apprehending the notorious and now incarcerated Hannibal Lector (played by a wonderfully sinister and reptilian Brian Cox). When Graham's former handler, Jack Crawford (Dennis Farina), asks him to help him profile the murderer, Graham visits Lector in his jail cell, to recover the mind-set necessary to track the killer. In doing so, Graham incurs Lector's wrath and his collusion with the very killer Graham is pursuing, bringing him far closer to the case than he anticipated.
Joan Allen absolutely shines as Reba McClane, the blind girl who has the misfortune to be attracted to Francis Dollarhyde and who unwittingly serves as Dollarhyde's last connection to his vanishing humanity. Early on in their relationship, Dollarhyde takes Reba to a veterinarian who is set to cap a sedated tiger's tooth. Watching Reba's facial expressions as she ran her hands along the tiger's fur and listened to the beating of its heart, with tears streaming down her face, was almost painful. Dollarhyde watches her from a corner in the room and seems to experience something akin to an emotional release from her experience. It is one of the strangest and most erotically charged scenes I've ever seen in a film.
When I first saw this film in its theatrical release, I remember thinking, "Thanks a lot, Michael Mann, you've totally ruined Iron Butterfly's Inna Gadda De Vida for me. Now I'm never going to be able to hear this great song from my youth without feeling vaguely frightened." Even so, the sound track for the film contains some of the most eerily beautiful music from `80's groups like Red 7, Prime Movers and Shriekback, which Mann has integrated flawlessly into the film.
"Manhunter" might annoy some viewers who remember only too well the big hair and bad fashion of the 1980's. However, if you can manage to put these aside, I think you will find an often overlooked and intense gem of a thriller.
Go ahead and buy the full screen edition.......2007-02-20
I have seen the "director's cut" and the theatrical release. I strongly recommend this DVD (I own it). It is the theatrical release and, quite frankly, Michael Mann's original editing instincts were on target. The "director's cut" really doesn't add significant impact to the film. The only detrimental thing I have to say about this DVD is that it is not widescreen. But, it's really not worth spending between $25 and $300 dollars for out-of-print director's cuts. Or, get the new 3-disc Lector set that includes this film, Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal. Unfortunately, as with many of Mann's films - the director's cut releases reflect poor judgment by the director [Last of the Mohicans is a prime example -- ruined by Mann in re-editing. And, the theatrical release was withheld from DVD.] Invest in the theatrical cut of Manhunter while it's available.

Some diehard Batfans have been slow to warm to the animated series Batman Beyond even though it was created by the same team responsible for the excellent Batman cartoon of the early '90s. The Dark Knight should be a brooding avenger in a noir-nightmare Gotham City, the purists argue, not some smart-aleck teen four decades in the future, with jet packs, invisibility shields, and other sci-fi gizmos loaned him by an elderly Bruce Wayne (voiced, excellently as always, by Kevin Conroy, his stony bass given a raspy hint of old age), now confined to hobbling about on a cane and monitoring his protégé's activities from the Batcave. Between its respectful reexamination of the "tortured hero" mythos and its sleek, anime-inspired look, this feature-length movie should go a long way toward quieting their complaints. Of course, it doesn't hurt that they've brought back the most legendary figure in the Rogues Gallery (voiced by Mark Hamill, deliciously deranged), but exactly how and why the Joker has managed to turn up 40 years after his last meeting with Batman still as youthful and diabolical as ever is explained not only logically but terrifyingly as well. The secret behind his arrival is perhaps the saddest, grimmest twist any purported "kids' show" has dared to attempt. (Parents may well want to preview this tape before screening it for the very young.) Once again, Warner Brothers' cartoon Batman has outshone all the live-action films, never allowing the thrilling action set pieces or flashes of wry humor to drown out the drama, even tragedy, of the all-too-human superheroes. --Bruce Reid

Batman Beyond finally shines!!.......2007-05-26
The Batman Beyond series was definately not as good as Batman TAS or The New Adventures of Batman. It wasn't that the idea wasn't good. It's just Terry isn't a Bruce Wayne and definately not the original Batman. Also the black and red with no cape does take some getting used to. But I do like some secrets that are revealed like Bruce and Babs relationship. Who woulda thought!? Anyway, when The Return of the Joker came out it was pure gold. The flashback to the good ol' days was great, although sad. Too bad for Tim. I definately recommend the Uncut version. It's definately as PG-13 as they warn. Talk about Murder anyone?? Torture?? Definately pick this one up. If you don't like Beyond, you'll definately like the Bruce/Babs/Tim/and Joker angle. Great Stuff.
Better!.......2007-05-15
It's like a totally diffrent movie from the original release.
The re-addition of the cut scenes makes it a much, much more powerful movie. It also makes a heck of a lot more sense this way that it did as the WB butchered version.
Very recomended even if you have the original release. If you don't, then this is the version you need to have.
Not your older brothers Batman, this is better.......2007-04-01
I relate the critics view of this series to the Transformers vs. Beast Wars crowd. That to be true to the source material the story has to be THE same with updated animation. I think that is wrong. This is a brilliant series, with this movie being the Pen-Ultimate. Sadly, the animation and story are so good, that everything that came in the season after, was just not as good. Although Batman Beyond's appearances in the later Justice League show is brilliant. This movie also has one of the darkest and twisted ends for one of our great heroe's that has to be seen to believed. Not since Batman "Death in the Family" from the comics, has innocence been this lost. Not for young viewers. Great movie.
Uncut Version information.......2007-03-28
I recently purchased the "Uncut Version" elsewhere, the cover of my copy looks like the one Amazon has pictured here. The ISBN for my copy is 1-4198-1383-8 and the UPC code number is 012569717251.
My case says "Full Length Movie" across the top (white lettering on blue.) There is no mention of it being uncut on the cover but the peel off plastic seal says "The Original, Uncut Version." The cover lists the running time as 76 minutes (not the 77 minute time listed on the 2002 release of the Uncut Version.)
The DVD itself has different information. It clearly states "The Original, Uncut Version" and says the film is Widescreen (unfortunately not anamorphic) with a running time of 77 minutes and a rating of PG-13. I haven't watched the whole film yet but did check how a certain someone dies and it is the by the "uncut" method.
Be Prepared - Be very Prepared........2007-02-20
I replaced my VHS copy of the movie with this one. I wasn't quite ready for the additional violence. I'm not going to ruin the plot by saying more.
I recommend this movie - it is very good - but it is not for children. I rate it PG 13.
