Think A Summer Place, and you'll probably be humming Max Steiner's wonderfully romantic instrumental theme song, a hand-holding hit in 1959. The movie itself is similarly irresistible, a colorful soap opera about the passions of a pair of dewy-eyed teens and their straying parents. At an island resort in Maine, Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue (the reigning teen idols of the day) fall hard for each other. What they don't know is that her father (Richard Egan) and his mother (Dorothy McGuire), lovers 20 years earlier, have rekindled their affair. Both, inconveniently, have spouses, which is what makes this a soap opera. Lovers of camp will find much to savor in the incredible '50s attitudes, and in the innocence of supervirgin Dee ("Johnny, have you been bad with girls?"). Yet the sincerity of writer-director Delmer Daves, cowriter of An Affair to Remember, comes shining through the corn; and the grown-up affair anticipates The Bridges of Madison County by 30 years. --Robert Horton
Description

A Great Love Story.......2007-06-27
I really love the actors in this story and recommend anyone, who truly want to be loved to look at this story. It doesn't matter about family situations long as you have a level head in this new reality world, you can over come any given situation.
Yummy High Cholesterol '50's Fun!.......2007-06-13
As a social barometer of the times it may be reading a bit too much into "A Summer Place" to proclaim it as an early ripple in the social tempests still to come in the 1960's. Still those of us alive at that time know that in 1959 it WAS controversial to sympathetically portray adultery and teen sexuality as depicted in "A Summer Place". I remember my high school years (early '70's) and how girls who "got into trouble" would simply disappear and you'd never know what became of them until a classmate told you years later of their waywardness (this was still a VERY rare occurrence here in "flyover country" even then; how things have changed). And of course while adultery and divorce were likewise not quite so prevalent "back in the day," they certainly happened but not without considerable burden of stigma for the convention-defying lovers who tossed everything over for their passion.
So yeah, I do think the sociology of "A Summer Place" is significant but that's really the least reason to see it. Mostly it's just maximum guilty-pleasure FUN and a HUGE blast of '50's nostalgia and "attitude" that still has great charm and luster for receptive movie fans.
Rule number 1 is that you must have full tolerance for what we could now call cheesy acting and intensely overripe melodrama. AND ALSO you must be prepared for the intense full-frontal gumball-vivid Technicolor cinematography of the time. Too many viewers can't see beyond the stylistic conventions of the time a movie was made to appreciate the human story being told; what a pity! Think of everyone you know who just won't watch a movie because it's in black & white, or because it's obviously an old, overcooked Hollywood potboiler. You know what? Many of those are GREAT works of art however (like most art) they require that you make the effort to meet them halfway. Think of them not only as theatrical productions but also as time capsules of the era they were created--because that's exactly what they are. And how fortunate we are now to have such easy access on DVD for our enjoyment now!
But enough of the film theory stuff. "A Summer Place" appeals on many levels; the gorgeous cinematography, the convention-challenging story & script, the VERY effective and well-remembered orchestral score, and let's not overlook the cast. Sandra Dee & Troy Donahue do indeed project a kind of youthful innocence that truly is a thing of the past now, but was common in their time. Dorothy McGuire & Richard Egan give it their all as the reunited Pine Island lovers who cannot resign themselves to half-lives of marital indifference or cruelty. And how about those jilted spouses? You gotta love Constance Ford as the scheming, triple-bitter wife interested only in keeping her husband & daughter under her thumb. Look-the DVD transfer shows how she has make-up "frown lines" painted at the corners of her mouth just in case we don't get the point that she's a sullen, PO'd bitter woman. A Snidely Whiplash mustache wouldn't have been gender-appropriate, would it?!? Arthur Kennedy also gives a GREAT performance as Dorothy's bibulous husband who despite his degraded state still musters considerable self-awareness & ultimately inspires our sympathy.
I described "A Summer Place" earlier as a guilty pleasure, but now I want to back off a little bit in closing. This is not really drama that will shake you fiercely like, say "21 Grams" or "Dead Man Walking," however I confess I AM touched by the underlying sincerity of "A Summer Place" and its intent to provoke--gently--some questioning of the Eisenhower era values that seemed set in stone and indeed WERE a cage of oppression for many. Perhaps your appreciation of "A Summer Place" will be proportional to your level of receptivity to such a re-evaluation. All I know for sure is that you enjoy it half as much as I do, you will like it a very great deal indeed!
A Summer Place-DVD.......2007-05-12
I saw this movie about 20years ago and loved it, but I fell in love with the Theme song and have loved it till this very day. The quality of this movie was fabulous as was the service, no hassles at all, its a pleasure to have my very own copy of this movie. Thanks Amazon.
Summer, Sex and Suds.......2007-05-08
Nowadays novelist Sloan Wilson's a nearly-forgotten footnote to 50's pop culture, but he produced two big bestsellers that were made into iconic films of their time, THE MAN IN THE GREY FLANNEL SUIT and A SUMMER PLACE. Neither picture's a masterpiece, but both are of interest, with SUMMER PLACE having the edge for entertainment value; its tale of angst and lust, senior and junior division, still provides plenty of sizzle. Thanks to the production code, Hollywood danced around sex for years. When films began to address the subject, in pictures like PEYTON PLACE and A SUMMER PLACE, the tone was often breathless hysteria -- there's something of a disconnect when actors coiffed and dressed in high 50's fashion are tossing around Victorian language like "house of ill repute" and "harlot". That said, these movies provide fascinating glimpses of public morality. In today's climate, Paris Hilton's X-rated antics provoke less commotion than Wilson's relatively straightforward adultery and teenage canoodling do here. Attractive performances from Egan and McGuire, nice work from Constance Ford as the embittered, puritanical mother (Angela Lansbury must have been washing her hair that week), and career-defining turns from Troy Donahue and Sandra Dee. As I've said before on this site, Dee's always better than you remember her being. She looks fine here, always maintaining her dignity in a thoughtful performance of material that could easily have turned ludicrous. Throw in a memorable Max Steiner score, a good Warner's DVD transfer, and you've got a great Saturday night movie.

SpaceCamp shares a striking similarity to Ron Howard's Apollo 13--it's about NASA trying to bring some people down from outer space, except in this case 13 represents the median age of those in danger. Kate Capshaw plays Andie, who throws off the curve by being on the high end of that age scale. She's always a bridesmaid, but never a bride in the shuttle program, an astronaut doomed to play wet nurse to a gaggle of kids enrolled in NASA's summer program. Of course, out of all these teeming hordes of children (there don't appear to be any particular qualifying standards to attend the camp), the film focuses on five. Kathryn (Lea Thompson) is a hopeful pilot who wants to be at the controls of the shuttle one day. Tate Donovan plays Kevin, a daft young carouser who is supposed to be so incorrigible he's winning (he's not). Kelly Preston is Tish, a valley girl with a photographic memory, and Larry B. Scott is Rudy. Rudy's there to meet the Hollywood quota for capsule diversification, but neither he nor Trish does much. Most oddly, Joaquin Phoenix is Max, the young Star Wars nut whose brain and fast friendship with a NASA robot get them all sent into orbit. It's unfortunate that a lot of topical swear words are peppered throughout SpaceCamp, as it could operate as a diverting night's watch for the young astro-nut in your house. Director Harry Winer, who rose from television and sank back to television after this film stiffed over the summer of 1986, directs in 20-minute blocks like he's pacing himself for a commercial break. Once the embarrassing, extremely '80s, opening 40 minutes are dispensed with, however, and the crew accidentally gets blasted into space, the effort to return home is involving, even if it is pretty silly. SpaceCamp won't win any merit badges for script writing, acting, or direction but it's got the right li'l Camp NASA spirit. --Keith Simanton

One of my all time favorite movies........2007-07-05
The acting is not great, but if you have kids that are into space I highly recommend this book, their imaginations will go wild.
Over 50 and still love this little flick.......2007-02-04
Okay, so maybe it's dorky of me, but I really do love this movie. It combines everything I like best in my favorite genres -- fun and funny sci fi; happy ending adventure; heart-warming family entertainment -- with a splash of factual space program documentary. I've seen it about five times! LOL
A Great Family Picture.......2007-01-22
I remember when this movie came out. I saw two different reviews of this picture. One liked it and gave the reasons why. The other did not, and gave his reasons why. And the reasons were the same!!! What one reviewer liked the other hated!
This is an excellent family picture. It shows how people can step up to meet challenges. Of course, watch this movie with your children. Then, you can use it as a tool to encourage them!
One last note: This movie features one of my favorite actors (Skerritt) and one of my favorite actresses (Capshaw).
Space Camp.......2007-01-09
This is a great FAMILY movie to watch. It teaches a great lesson in how very important team work really is and how each person is vitally important to accomplish any goal at hand, otherwise, all would be lost.
Shoot For The Stars.......2007-01-09
This movie may be a bit older - but it is still a good one! It is based around a bunch of kids going to Space Camp who actually end up in space. The movie is clean other than one or two "dam's" that make it in. For adults it may be a little corny - but really I would give it 5 stars for a "B" movie!

It looks like all that money NASA spent on the Hubble Space Telescope was worth it after all--at least from an aesthetic standpoint. Stargaze: Hubble's View of the Universe captivates the viewer with stunningly high-definition color images of galaxies, nebulae, and heavenly bodies closer to home. Each shot pans and lingers over the richly colored pictures as unobtrusive narration in English, French, German, or Spanish explains the history of the Hubble mission, its targets, and what we've learned so far. The music by 2002 is harmless and quiet, though viewers pathologically averse to New Age will scramble for the audio control. Including screensavers and Web features, Stargaze will keep spaceheads happy and entranced for hours, and convert the unbelievers. --Rob Lightner

Paradigm Shift.......2007-05-11
This display of the Hubble space telescope's work is changing the way people feel and think. Everyone I have watched this display with expressed some form of changed emotions from joy, to loneliness, to despair. As for the young, the question becomes one of why we cannot go there. Thus, the quest for knowledge of the universe continues. I am a science teacher and regard this disc as a must have.
Hubble pictures.......2007-03-20
If you have any interest in what "is out there" in outer space this is a film you can not miss. When we watched it we watched it twice in a row. This film is truely breathtaking. Watch it without the sound at least once so you can comment on the pictures.
No commentory.......2006-03-24
i was surprized that no commentory or subtitle to tell me what i am watching. may be it was my mistake that i didnt pay attention to the describtion of the disc content. but be careful.. it is exactly as the title says.. just a stargaze with some music :(
Universally enjoyable........2006-02-25
The fisrt scene already warms the soul. The music is awesome. They could not have chosen anything better. I think some people will look at these pictures of galaxies and stardust and go - oh, that's nice and forget about it once they switch of the TV, but others, like me will just sit in awe as you see the most spectacular visions of our universe. It really puts us humans and this little planet we live on in perspective. Who knows how many civilizations are in those pictures if we could only have zoomed in even more. A great DVD with the most beautiful music. Get it!
See for yourself why the Hubble Space Telescope is called the Mirror to the Universe!!!.......2006-02-08
+++++
This program presents images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) from 1990 to 1998. All images are accompanied by New Age music.
Before I say anything else, the images presented in this program are magnificent, awe-inspiring, and jaw-dropping. They should be seen by every Earthling so everybody can experience the extraordinary beauty of the universe.
The main menu for this program is as follows:
1. Play
2. Chapters (or Scenes)
3. Special Features
4. Credits (for all images and music presented in this program)
5. Previews (of other programs)
When I got this program, I simply put this disc into my DVD player and chose "Play" from the main menu. What I got was images accompanied by New Age music and nothing else. Personally, I liked the music that I found to be very calming and serene but I had no idea what I was looking at. I reasoned that there must be something I had to activate to explain the images I was seeing.
After being perplexed for a few minutes and wandering around the main menu, I eventually chose "Special Features" from the main menu.
The Special Features had the following selections:
1. audio (available in English, French, German, and Spanish)
2. subtitles (also available in the above languages)
3. language (also available in the above languages)
4. screen saver
5. web DVD
I knew that I wanted the "English language" so I selected it. I also wanted "English subtitles" that I eventually found out were termed "English nomenclature" in this menu. (I was initially confused by the term "nomenclature" because this word means "a system of naming" not "subtitles".) Choosing these, you get the naming of images accompanied by music. This was certainly better than just images and music alone but I still found that this was not enough to get full enjoyment from this program.
This time I selected "audio" from the special features menu. From this I chose "English narration." I also selected "English narration" from the subtitles section. With these selections you get music and narration that explains the images and the words of the narrator are printed under each image. I watched the entire program with "English narration" for both audio and subtitle selections. It was only after I watched the entire program like this that I realized that there may have been a better option for me: keep the "English narration" in the audio but have instead the "English nomenclature" for the subtitles. (With "English narration" subtitles, too many words appear on the screen. I found this to be distracting.)
The reason I explained all the above is that it is easy to see why I think that there should have been a note that explained the options available with respect to audio and subtitles. Instead you have to experiment. Some people may find this frustrating and time-consuming. (In fact, I'm still not sure if other options are available!)
For those who don't like New Age music, there is no way of turning the music off. However, if the narration is turned on, then the music becomes quiet background music.
The fantastic images in this program can be divided into three parts:
(1) This covers chapters or scenes (1 to 3) and lasts about 15.5 minutes. Here we are told everything about the HST. Oddly, there is not one image of the HST in this part. The images instead are deep space images that we're told nothing about.
(2) Covers chapters (4 to 9) and lasts about 32.5 minutes. This is where the mesmerizing images are explained. Here there are visuals of deep space that include nebulae, distant galaxies, galactic clusters, and other exotic objects. These are static images but the camera keeps moving across them giving the illusion of movement.
(3) Covers chapter 10 and lasts about 8.25 minutes. Here, we are shown time-lapse photography of the Solar System's outer planets, namely Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and even Pluto. The images were from the HST and were meticulously put together into a time-lapse sequence for each of the planets mentioned.
The end credits roll and that's the end of the program. Right? Wrong! There is no mention of this anywhere (why??) but we then get a sequential presentation (that lasts for about 4.75 minutes) of nine astronomical paintings of some real galactic images that were shown in the main program. The title of each painting is shown briefly at the bottom of each painting. The paintings were created by Marilynn Flynn who is, and the viewer is not told this, a great space artist.
Finally, I should mention the screen saver selections (that can be accessed through the "Special Features" of the main menu). Here we get a display of most of the images seen in the main program as well as paintings by the above artist. Oddly, some images of the HST are shown. (Recall that there were no images of the HST in the main program.) The images appear sequentially with their titles appearing briefly at the bottom of each image. It is possible to pause an image but you can't go back to a previous image.
In conclusion, barring some of the problems hinted at above, this is an incredible visual, audio, and educational delight, demonstrating just an infinitesimally small number of cosmic wonders that are in our vast universe!!

Stargaze II doesn't deviate much from the previous Stargaze DVD, and that's a good thing. Galaxies, nebulae, and other astronomical elements simply float across the screen in brilliant clarity, fueled by New Age music by Opus 27. The images are mostly from the Hubble Space Telescope, along with some unique mosaics from several sources. The bigger your screen, the better for "plasma art" that could serve as the background at a party or a valentine to any star freak. You can even view the program in high definition if you have the right media set-up. Sometimes the images float in front of a wallpaper of stars that causes a 3-D effect or looks kinda hokey, depending on your point of view. You can find out what you are looking at by activating subtitles or by clicking a menu button that goes to a page-by-page detail about the subject and how the image was rendered. With literally out-of-this-world colors and textures, the beauty of the heavens is glorious to behold. Produced the same year Congress debates the fate of the Hubble (2004), this program serves record of the extraordinary worlds that are seen only by this workhorse satellite. Lobbyists may have no better weapon to use than the Stargaze DVDs. --Doug Thomas

very interesting.......2007-06-11
great pictures and music, but I missing a best explanation where we are.
Just beautiful and relaxing.......2007-05-07
Well I will give this one 5 stars, because it is what I expected. Sometimes and as in this case ''Less is more''. If you are not looking for a Discovery Channel or PBS type documentary, but rather beautiful imagery along with nice ''new age'' type music, then I recommend this DVD.
I use it as a ''background'' element when I am reading or doing something else since it is very un-intrusive. You can also play the DVD with other music sources (Steve Roach, Vidna Obmana, Robert Rich). It is fit and OK for 16x9 format. I agree that the images and montage are sometimes grainy and lacks creativity but it is more than acceptable since the photos were intended more for science than entertainment. The music is relaxing and appropriate for this type of visual experience.
This DVD can also be very educational if you take the time to learn the menu options. But it also nice that it can be just a simple visual and musical experience.
nice images ... poor production.......2007-01-03
I liked the images included in the DVD; however, getting information for the different images or navigating between slides is an absolute frustration. I wanted to play the DVD in my Astronomy class but after going over the DVD I changed my mind for it would have been a nightmare to move between images and display the information for some of these images. Overall, the DVD is poorly produced, BIG TIME, and because of that I am giving it 2 stars.
Stargaze II ... Just another poor sequel.......2006-12-05
I really enjoy Stargaze and was anxious to order and watch the second installment with Stargaze II. Unfortunately, like most sequels, second parts, etc., Stargaze II falls significantly short of expanding on the photographic essay that Stargaze did; and in this respect, was a miserable disappointment.
There is so much that the Hubble ST has given to us in the way of images, I find it hard to believe that there was a shortage of images that could be incorporated into this DVD. The overlay of images over a moving starfield in the first chapter should never have been allowed. It's a shame. Often times presentations like this are the inspiration and trigger for those who wonder if a life in astronomy might be their calling.
NOT on par with the first Stargaze AT ALL!!!.......2006-08-14
I bought this hoping for more of the same from the first Stargaze but it didn't take long be REAL disappointed with this product. Again, the video will not loop and requires navigation on the veiwers part, but what really takes this down the tubes is the graphic presentations themselves.
From the outset, there is an extremely cheesy "collage" of photos which I have to think is a LAME attempt at three dimensional vision - it's really BAD! Not natural at all.
As the program "progresses" we're treated to superimposed still images of comets, planets, asteroids and other space objects "moving" into and out of our field of vision (which is a dense starfield). This is done so horribly bad that the only justification for releasing a P.O.S. like this is that it was some rich persons junior high school kid's A/V project...which would only rated a C or a D for what was presented.
Stargaze II has VERY LITTLE HUBBLE material which may be the "reason" for the hokey visuals but as a person that just spent twenty bucks on this garbage, I WANT MY MONEY BACK!!!
If you liked the first one, STOP THERE! DON'T BUY THIS TURD AT ANY PRICE!!!! You won't get what you paid for. I just wish someone out there would have given a decent description of this horrible 3D attempt and failure in their reviews cuz I would NEVER have bought this had I known!!

The fourth Gundam feature (1988) takes place 14 years after the third and continues the rivalry between Earth Federation mecha pilot Amuro Ray and Char Aznable, now ruler of the space realm of Neo-Zeon. Char so hates the Earth, he plans to bombard the planet with asteroids, causing a deadly nuclear winter. Although the corrupt Earth Federation commands vastly superior resources, all that really stands in Char's way is Amuro and his Nu Gundam Mobile Suit. Writer-director Yoshiyuki Tomino continues the story of the Newtypes, humans who possess psychic powers. The latest possessor of these abilities is Quess Paraya, an obnoxious teenager who whines and fusses until she's finally killed. Char's Counterattack is essentially a two-hour space battle, and although Tomino had only limited technology at his disposal, the choreography of the mecha duels is generally effective and exciting. Rated 13 Up: Violence, mostly robot vs. robot. --Charles Solomon

A great ending to the legends of Gundam..........2007-01-21
U.C. 0093. Thirteen years after the end of the One Year War, the legendary Char Aznable has returned. Vowing to defeat the Earth Federation and complete humanity's migration into space, Char and his Neo Zeon forces begin bombarding Earth with asteroids in order to render the planet uninhabitable.
With the Federation too weak and corrupt to oppose Neo Zeon, the task of thwarting Char's plan falls to the Londo Bell taskforce and its ace pilot, Amuro Ray. The old rivalry of Char and Amuro begins again, and this time the fate of the world hangs in the balance...
Overall, this is what I considered the best movie in the series.
last of the truly great Gundams.......2006-11-25
This feature is a nice way to wind up the original Gundam plotline started in the original Mobile Suite Gundam. Nicely done it is far better than the later overblown "Junk" that came out of Japan. Most of the older animation fans, like myself, have been "Gundamed to Death" with un-imaginative re-makes and re-hashes. This is a nice conclusion to the Saga.
One of the BEST Gundam Movies Out There........2006-04-10
This is definetly one of the best Gundam movies out there. This is particulary one of the main movies in the Gundam franchize, If u watched the original 3 part Mobile Suit Gundam Movies then u should get it almost right away. BUT if u watch the ugly Gundam Wing and Gundam Seed series than u will get confused as HEll. This takes place about 13-14 years after the events of the original gundam and right now Char Aznable is the supreme leader of zeo-neon, and since he has a furious hatred fo the planet Earth forcing everyone to live and outer space, he is planning to cause asteroids to hit the planet and to cause a global ice age. But once again our hero Amuro Ray is back and ready to stop Char and kicking his ass in the process. The story is well put together but since the artwork was originally made in the early 90's it will be uncomfertable for a while to todays anime art style. I highly recommed this DVD to hardcore mech/gundam fans cuz trrrrrrrrrrruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuusssssssst me u will not get dissapointed.
DVD Review.......2005-10-25
It is good DVD to watch. However, it is difficult to understand a little bit if the person has not watched the Saga from the beginning. This version is a follow-on to Mobible Gundam Zeta which will be available on Amazon.com soon.
the heroes last battle..........2005-08-26
if you where interested in the first series of mobile suit gundam, youll defenetly love thos movie.
as the world seems to turn to an end our two heroes battle it out once and for all...who will be left standing?
Amuro and Char battle to the end-still both vengeful for lah lah's death
you must buy this!!!!!this will keep you off a your seat for a while...

Another Desert Dreamtime Journey Review.......2002-12-27
I purchased this DVD based solely on the three reviews below.
I can only assume the reviewers were watching on 25 inch or smaller analog sets. On my Toshiba 57HX81 HDTV, with Sony progressive scan DVD player the video quality was poor to say the least. Very grainy, and almost blurred at times, it came across to me like VHS tape resolution not DVD. The film is also full of dust specks scattered throughout the 77 minutes.
What's even more disappointing is, it was shot in standard 4:3, not widescreen. A movie designed to show the majesty of the desert and they don't shoot widescreen?
The audio quality is OK, but you only get Dolby Digital 2.0 not 5.1.
STUNNING!.......2002-08-12
I cannot find words to truely describe this DVD. Nothing I can think of can do this justice. The photography is superb-the vastness and scope of which is mindboggling. The music goes very well with it. You will travel to places in the western regions that you would think are from another planet. The one note I have, is that I much prefer the second soundtrack by Steve Roach-it is a 77 minute song that fits the visuals a bit better.
Highly recomended!
A relaxing journey through time and space.......2001-12-27
Steve Roach's haunting ambient works provide the perfect soundtrack to this beautifully filmed peice of art. Ever wonder what it would be like to actually see the world of Salvador Dali's dreams? This is as close as you will get. If you are reading this review, then you must already be interested, so do your soul a favor and order it right now. You consciousness will thank you.
Stunning visuals - incredible soundtrack.......2001-11-20
Fans of classic nature films like Baraka, Chronos, and Koyaanisquatsi, will marvel at this DVD. Time of the Earth is multifaceted, mystical, subtle, timeless, and most of all, remarkably attractive.
Time of the Earth communicates on a profound level that cannot be comprehended through language. This is a film that can only be comprehended in its insightfulness and awe-inspiring significance on a much deeper, intuitive level, demonstrating the unrestrained power of nature. Roach and Lazur are accustomed to the limitation of human speech, as they create this slowly evolving, wordless journey into this dreamtime existance.
This DVD is a glimpse of the fascinating southwestern desert in all its diversity. The film offers panoramic glimpses of nature at its most serene and pastoral state, from the primal beauty of the southwestern deserts, to breathtaking glimpses of cascading waterfalls and powerful ocean waves breaking on a beach in the Pacific Northwest during a spectacular sunset. Time of the Earth exemplifies primordial nature long before human existence.
The careful editing and sequencing of every segment are deliberate throughout, and magnificently presented. Steve Lazur spent over three years shooting film, which eventually became distilled down to 77 minutes. If a single picture is worth a thousand words, then the thousands of visual images contained in Time of the Earth could easily fill a library.
The enormity of the epic rock sculptures, and sun-scorched canyons sweep over you with breathtaking power. Like many paramount works of art, Time of the Earth suggests a direction, which is more profound than the object of your observation. If the sufi poet, Rumi created a modern-day film, instead of his inspired state of rapture in his words and poetry, his thoughts might be perfectly captured in a film such as this. Life on this planet is short-lived, and has much to expound. Time of the Earth scrapes the surface of existance that many of us never experience, and gives a glimpse of the megalithic world beneath.
Complimented by a stirring soundtrack by legendary composer, Steve Roach, the film augments my deepest emotions every time I watch it. The music is perfectly timed to the scenes, and the combination makes for a wonderfully calming experience. This DVD is a must for anyone looking for something worthwhile and insightful, and a conscious experience that delights all the senses.
The only dialog is one developed between the mind and heart of the viewer. It is a contemporary look at the relationship between people and place. Much of the photography is slow-motion or time-lapse footage of landscapes, ethereal clouds, and panoramic desert vistas, enhanced by Steve Roach's mesmerizing tribal-ambient score.
Time of the Earth is profoundly abundant in beauty and detail. With each viewing it shifts in the mind's eye, and becomes a new and different film. You can breathe the air, squint at the sun, and feel dwarfed by the towering mountain peaks and endless sky, the moment you enter the immediacy of this experience. Time itself becomes relative. This film in many ways is like a poem written with images and sound, and one of the most memorable and rewarding experiences I've seen in DVD format. Highly recommended.

This soothing, well-produced DVD is the next best thing to riding piggyback on a satellite. Over 150 orbital images from NASA are sequenced to provide a comprehensive tour of Earth's magnificent features, from continental contours and island systems to spectacular atmospheric and oceanographic conditions. Accompanied by 15 songs by Celtic harpist Lisa Lynne, these high-resolution images float across the screen to form an epic collage of our planet's delicate beauty. While signs of civilization are occasionally evident, the emphasis is placed on Earth's natural formations, from shifting dunes and wave patterns to the stark relief of the Himalayas. Lynne's music tends to have a soporific effect (probably intentional), but as a calming mood-setter this DVD is highly recommended. Curious viewers will especially appreciate the detailed scientific information that accompanies each image on separate menu screens. For those who may never fly in the space shuttle, this high-altitude journey is a definite treat. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Oceania is the first of seven titles in DVD International's new Planet Earth series. Featuring spectacular video of the earth's oceans, seas, islands and coastlines taken by the Space Shuttle, Oceania is 80 minutes of breathtaking imagery, complemented by Celtic harp and flute music performed by Lisa Lynne.

OK DVD, Boring, a review from a space lover.......2006-04-13
Buy one of the Imax space dvd's , you'll be better off. This one is boring.
Unfortunately once you open the box, nobody lets you return it.
So you are stuck with it.
Spend your money on something else.
Awesome!!!.......2004-05-22
This is one of the best planet dvds I've seen in a long time. Beautiful graphics and wonderful soundtrack. Lots of information too.
A little dull.......2003-04-26
I sat down to watch this, and within just the first couple minutes I knew I'd be bored. I guess I was expecting more of a wide shot of earth, but the camera is zoomed in close on almost every shot and makes it difficult to even tell what you are looking at at times. And because it's so close, they do this annoying pan with every shot so you can see the whole thing, and that got me a little dizzy. And it just wasn't smooth, because it cuts to a new video about every 7 seconds. It's not something you can just sit and watch, but I guess if you have it on at a party or something, it's ok, as long as it's for your grandparents or something. I have to say the music is pretty good and goes with what you are watching, but as with all dvds of this type, you can play your own soundtrack. I noticed that this is the first dvd in a series, so maybe they've done a better job on the newer ones.
