What makes a good WWII retro-spect is the narration and information. Walter Cronkite has all of that PLUS he was there. He went in with the troops in Market Garden. Plus there is a lot footage you probably haven't seen.

Also a lot of time you see 3-disk set with makes it sound like lot of minutes. This 3-disk set delivers many hours

buyer beware,i purchased this series from crazyape at a great price.the only problem,is that, what i received was not the title that is advertised.seller and amazon were notified ,but it's still advertised as the walter cronkite series.unprofessional and deceptive company.

How on earth can this DVD be anything but wonderful( if you can call war that)when Walter Cronkite is involved with it??? I dont care if he was talking about grass growing or sand in the desert I would still listen... Its World War II and he describes it completly . I dare say he made it informational and entertaining at the same time. Enjoy! I did!

Great Supplemental Stories From WWII.......2004-11-10

I am a fan of most WWII documentaries. I had not seen most of the segments in this set with the late Walter Cronkite. It has some great seldom told stories from an American Newsman's Perspective who served in World War II. It contains stories about Leningrad, Stalingrad, Finland, Malta, North Africa, The Air War over Germany, the north atlantic convoys, The German V1, V2, rocket program, War Crimes trials and many others. I find it to be an excellent supplement to the World at War box set. A true enthusiast will not find this set disappointing. It is over 14 hours in length. Most volumes consist of stories that are about 20-30 minutes in length. They are pieced together well and add some depth to the picture of WWII that is portrayed so often on the History channel. It is a five star set in its content and quality but does not have the international perspectives or comprehensive view of the war that the World at War has. It also does not have the detailed military analysis that the Battlefield Series has. Still, this set is good and a history buff will enjoy the numerous first hand accounts of events that are recorded in the series. For the Price, it is well worth it. May we learn from history and not repeat it.

On July 20, 1974 the country of Turkey began the illegal invasion of the independent Greek island of Cyprus. This led to the displacement of thousands of Cypriots and the establishment of a separate Turkish Cypriot regime to govern the invaded area in the north. This ongoing dispute has contributed to the de facto partitioning of the Republic of Cyprus into three main parts: -the area under the effective control of the Republic, in the south of the island; -the area not under the effective control of the Republic, styling itself the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (recognized globally only by Turkey), in the north; and -the United Nations-controlled Green Line, separating the two. The United Nations has condemned this illegal occupation of the northern 40% of the island, yet it still exists today. Experience the pain of some of the 200,000 Greek Cypriots in refugee Camp Stavrou outside of Lefkosia (Nicosia) as they share their struggle in January of 1979. The film includes a 30 minute update with interviews and parades with Greek Cypriots from Toronto, Canada and New York in 1993 and 1994. This film was featured at the Amnesty International convention in Los Angeles in May 1991. Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Mediterranean, attracting over 2.4 million tourists per year. A former British colony, it gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1960 and became a Commonwealth republic in 1961. The Republic of Cyprus is a developed country, and has been a member state of the European Union since 1 May 2004.

A Totally Third Rate Production.......2003-11-02

In short, too much repeat footage. This DVD pack is sub average at its very best. The Highlights are the program on the battle with the Africa Corps. and the program on the Battle of the Bulge. The other 2 programs are made up of repeat footage. Their are virtually no insights given and the feeling of the entire set is one of an impersonal overview. And not just any overview but an overview that is rushed, its as if the narrators (there are 2 and they are both inept) need to make a mad dash to the toilet and just want to get this damn thing over with. If you are looking for something comprehensive and insightful this clunk is a total waste of time.

I have seen some pretty good productions from the History Channel. This is not one of them. It views like a text book, with rapid fire black and white war footage, and facts. The information is good, however it is difficult to watch as the narrator changes with the footage (which is often). Do not expect to see much along the way of synopsis or historian commentary / insights as you view this dvd.

This is not great, but interesting if you don't care about a crisp 20.

I purchased it, and was glad to see some mention of the Canadians, even used the old union jack the Canadians had as a flag, at first i didn't realize that flag was for the Canadians.

Kind of old, nothing really new here, shocking or really that exciting, kind of boring, magazine subrictions to WII history or WW2 are much more interesting.

This is a nice DVD which gives good general information about the WESTERN half of the European Theatre (the far more bloody and decisive EASTERN theatre of Europe is curiously absent from the video) and the film is good for pinning down the dates that things occurred. Overall it is a well done series, and the fact that it was made in the early part of the 1980s is obvious in the way the narrator relies on hand-drawn maps (no computers images here!). This fact actually makes the video more fun, in a "campy" sort of way. What brings this series down is the narrator's constant editorializing. He doesn't just give out the information, but gives it out complete with an "American" bias (this isn't really the narrator's fault, as he is simply reading the lines someone else prepared for him). He tends to overemphasize the American role in defeating Germany, while underplaying or neglecting completely the role of Russia and England. His mispronunciation of the German word "luftwaffe" is ludicrous. He inaccurately depicts Field Marshall von Rundstedt as a "Nazi" when all history books agree that Hitler was wary of him precisely because he WASN'T a nazi. This series isn't very expensive, so overall it's worth it, but in some places don't be surprised if you hear yourself saying "gimme a break."

Old material in a new package.......2001-01-05

Potential buyers should be made aware that this History Channel presentation dates from the mid 1980s. As such it lacks some of the "spit and polish" of more recent THC offerings, but the subject matter and footage are of course much older than that.

Overall it is a decent package considering the amount of material and the price, but I found it somewhat lacking compared with the shows that THC currently produces, which tend to have better narration, better music, much better maps, and a more professional presentation.
