Initially broadcast as a TV miniseries to go with the series of three Anthology double-CD albums, this set of eight documentary tapes has the heft and scope of one of Ken Burns's expansive projects. Still, unless you are either a historian or a truly committed fan, you'll find yourself with way more material--particularly about the Beatles' early lives as lads in Liverpool--than you'll want to watch. The documentary material is copious, including early performance films and tapes, at the point before they found their true voices. The actual Beatlemania years--beginning in 1963 and concluding in 1970--feature extensive performance films, as well as home movies and archival material. The best parts, of course, are the interviews with the Beatles themselves, who produced the entire thing. Along with reworking two previously unreleased John Lennon tracks as "new Beatles songs," the Anthology includes some unseen Lennon interview tapes so that his acerbic voice can be heard as well. This stands as a comprehensive document of that heady period, the second coming of rock & roll, as the Beatles took what Elvis had started and expanded upon it exponentially. People, please. What could be more entertaining than hours upon hours of the Beatles telling their story? I have watched this many times, and never tire of it. If you are a fan, you are missing out if you don't see this. And the bonus material is great too - Paul George and Ringo jamming and reminscing - wow!

A great bargain.......2007-05-16

This Beatles Anthology DVD set is a great bargain because when it originally came out in the mid 90's on VHS tapes it was about $120 more. I still have a catalog from then to prove it. I was very impressed with the sound quality. The best sound quality I've ever heard Beatles music presented in. Makes me wish my old Beatles CDs sounded that good. On alot of my other DVD's I have to crank the volume way up to get any decent audio. The only thing I didn't like is that during some of the songs like "Revolution" & "Hey Jude" there is talking. I'm interested in what they have to say but not during the songs. And it doesn't seem to have a feature where you can just play the music videos. But I guess it's supposed to be a documentary & not a collection of music videos. Also I seem to recall some minor scenes when I saw it on TV in 1995 that weren't on the DVD, like the reunited Beatles in the 90's admiring one of the member's fancy car.

This was a great price for a great product. I have really enjoyed watching all the episodes and learning more about the Beatles. The interviews with each of the members help give a personal perspective to the events surrounding the Beatles' amazing popularity. A great buy!

A Must Have for Any Beatles Fan.......2007-04-23

Anthology is the history of the Beatles as told by the Beatles. It is the story of the Beatles from when they were young boys in Liverpool to when they recorded their last album, and everything in between. It is not only told through their words and interviews, but by their music, their movies and live performances, including their first concert at Shea Stadium and their appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show, just to name a few. Anthology also comes with a bonus disc of extras which includes the making of Anthology and the recording of the two latest Beatles singles, "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love". Beatles A Hard Days Night.......2007-07-07

This is a story around the Beatles'fame. A Humorous entertaining story with the Beatles' music which is well loved. I love this two volume DVD which includes interviews on the making of the movie because I love their music and their humor and always loved them since being a little girl. Their music is intriguing, inspiring and entertaining. They are musical geniuses.

Charming film, bad DVD.......2007-07-04

Having not watched this film in about ten years, getting reacquainted with it recently was almost like discovering it for the very first time all over again. The cinematography is beautiful (the early Beatles just seem to exist in black and white; it's very hard for me to picture them in color at this point in their career), the songs are terrific, the film really brings to life just what Beatlemania was like, with those hoardes of screaming young girls chasing their idols, and in spite of not having that much of a plot, the story is carried through very well by its young stars. In spite of not having been professional actors, The Beatles just have so much charm, wit, and vibrancy in this picture, back before they became weary of so much touring and all of those screaming fans, back when it was still all new, fun, and exciting to them. They were all so young and good-looking in this film! And being from this early stage of their fame, one gets a genuine sense of them being almost like four brothers who care about one another and enjoy one another's company, a far cry from the tension and acrimony present in LIB. At times it doesn't even feel like they were using a script, but that they were just ad-libbing most of it and acting like they would have in real life, four crazy, fun, and ultimately caring good young men dealing with the pressures of fame as best they could.

However, this DVD release leaves a whole lot to be desired. Disc one has a documentary of sorts, which is nothing more than a collection of interviews from people involved in the making of the film, and disc two is entirely taken up with interviews from all sorts of people who were involved in the making of the film. While there are some genuinely nice interviewees, such as George Martin, Klaus Voorman, David Jaxon (who played the young boy), and director Richard Lester, most of them aren't from such high-profile people; indeed, some of the interviews can be rather boring, and don't give us any real new information. Who, for example, wants to see an interview with Betty Glasow, their hairdresser, over, I don't know, an interview with an actual Beatle? Some of the interviewees mention deleted scenes, but we're not even shown any of them. While they're interesting to watch once, they're not something that most fans are going to want to see over and over again. Where are actually substantial bonus features like trailers, newsreels, the making-of documentary "You Can't Do That," the aforementioned deleted scenes, photo galleries, galleries of PR material, or an audio commentary? It's inexcusable that such a wonderful and famous film gets the short end of the stick in this rereleased format. The lacking bonus features aren't the only downside, either; the film is shown in phony widescreen, with the wrong aspect ratio, and therefore portions of the picture are cropped out. And while I normally find excessive complaints about audio quality to be sheer pedantry, complaining about relatively minor things that normal people don't really notice or care about to such a huge degree, even I noticed that there was something a bit off about the sound, particularly when it came to the songs. Additionally, the front cover almost looks like the cover of a bootleg. Whatever happened to the original cover design?

This is still a fun charming film after all of these years, but it really deserved better packaging and treatment. One would be better-served searching out the original DVD release, which had better bonus features, sound, and aspect ratio, or, if one can still find it, the older CD-ROM which I feel lucky to possess, which also gives the film the respect it deserves. How is it that such a classic rock musical gets such shabby treatment while the music videos and movies put out by modern day no-talents are treated with more care and concern?

These are "My Boys". I don't know what else to say. I loved them then and I love them now. This movie transports me back to a wonderful time when they were everything to me. I still watch it with a big smile on my face and laugh at the ease with which they toss off a "comeback" line at each other.

They look beautiful. The sound is great. The music is amazing still.

If you were ever a Beatles fan, the ownership of this film is a must.

A Hard Day's Night.......2007-06-27

I absolutely love this movie! I wasn't sure that I was going to like it before I had watched the movie. (I thought that it was going to be just another boring black and white movie.) The cover does not do the movie any justice. . . But I was hooked from the very beginning: The song "A Hard Days Night" started playing, and one of the Beatles members tripped running from a crowd of obsessed fans. From that point on, I laughed the entire time it was playing. Watching it was the reason that I fell in love with the Beatles in the first place. John, Paul, George and Ringo are such witty individuals, and I think that every person should see this movie . . . . at least twice!! I don't consider myself to be a movie critic by any means, so as far as acting abilities, plot, ect. are concerned, I would not be the best person to give a review of that nature. But I do know a good movie when I see one, and this is definitely one of them. . . .

Perhaps my expectations for this dvd was a bit too high, but it wasn;t all that I had hoped for. I enjoyed the packaging ad certain features, but it jsut didn't seem complete.

This movie was hilarious. You have to have an appreciation for slapstick tongue in cheek humor to truly be about to enjoy this film. They are funny young men just having a good time and poking fun at absolutely everything from religion to stardom.

Overall I was very happy with this DVD mastering. I saw absolutely no evidence that this was copied from VHS so forget the comments to that effect from one reviewer. As others have noted, the audio is excellent - clear, crisp mono, as God (and George Martin) intended. If you want the best quality mono version of the soundtrack songs, just dub the musical numbers from this disc to CD! Visual quality is very good although I would like to have seen the original widescreen ratio letterboxed. Colors are sharp and bright and short of a total remastering this as good as we're likely to get. My fear would be that the next "official" Apple reissue would substitute the stereo mixes from the LP, which would destroy the audio integrity, so get this while you can!

Great Trade Up From the Old Version..........2007-06-17

I've had "Help" on DVD for 17 years now; this version is a great upgrade! Subtitles, great sound (I have Bose 901Vs, no surround). The sound is great. Help is described by some as "best watched fast forwarded to the song scenes". Admittedly, it's a great bunch of "pre-MTV videos"! I'm a "John" fan, and he sings the first four of seven songs.

"Help" is first , great classic Beatles performance, in their last? B&W scene.

Next is "Your Going To Lose That Girl"- a fantastic "recording session" scene, great closeups of faces and guitars, nice filmography for 1965. It's worth a watch for the last line; the record producer asks "Boys, are you buzzing?" John says, "No, I'll take the car"! The Beatles were, as John stated, "smoking marijuana for breakfast" during the filming. George said they busted out laughing constantly, ruining several takes..

John plays a 12 string Hootenany in the next scene, "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away". John always hated miming songs, he deliberately made faces, scratched himself, anything for a laugh. Watch for him screwing up the scene twice. Supposedly written for Brian Epstein's life of living gay in the closet.

"Ticket To Ride", my favorite scene, is next. This video ruled MTV for some time in the mid-80s. Innovative photograhy, "Marx Brothers-like" antics and hilarious wipeouts as the Beatles attempt to ski in the Austrian Alps. It's also THE greatest song by the Beatles, in my opinion...classic drumming, guitars, vocals, harmonies, bass, lyrics.

"I Need You", George's "song" for the movie, is filmed on the Salisbury Plain with the Royal Army's Tank Corps, in sight of Stonhenge, I think. They're freezing cold-watch Ringo shiver, just like the Apple rooftop in Let It Be!

"The Night Before" finixshes the scene from above. Funny, it's Paul's first lead vocal in the film. Great bass playing and fisheye lens guitar shots! John almost gets run over by a tank. It's sad, these scenes (like he and George being "old" in the airport scene) are so different since he's dead. Rot in hell, Mark David Chapman!

"Another Girl" is next and pure Beatles fun, as they swap instruments on the Bahaman beach. John is a natural comedian, as usual. Ringo "plays" guitar too. The best part are the girls in those 1965 bikinis! They's cut "James Bond-like", since the movie's a parody of Bond films. They're still hot after all these years!

"Help" is reprised for the final scene which wraps up the silly plot. Think of the targeted age group that saw this in the theatre in '65...

The ending credits are a blast! "The Barber Of Seville" plays with the Beatles screwing around,as usual, laughing, singing, and George plugging his song! Listen to them laugh so hard they end with a collapsing gasp! The filmography, again, just during the credits, is fascinating for "it's day and age" - 42 years now.

This is one of those RARE films, it's a family film, if needed. Yeah, is's not as good as A Hard Day's Night, but it's GOOD+...and the songs are fantastic.

This turned out longer than I expected....

In retrospect, it seems absurd that the United States government felt so threatened by the presence of John Lennon that they tried to have him deported. But that's what happened, as chronicled in directors David Leaf and John Scheinfeld's The U.S. vs. John Lennon. The film starts slowly, with a familiar look at the former Beatle's troubled childhood, his outspokenness as one of the Fabs ("We're more popular now than Jesus Christ," etc.), and his eventual hookup with Yoko Ono, paralleled by the growth of political protest in '60s America, particularly against the Vietnam War. John and Yoko went on to stage their own peaceful demonstrations, like the Canadian "bed-ins," but these were largely harmless media stunts. It was when the Lennons moved to New York in the early '70s and took a more active role in the anti-war movement, making friends with radicals like Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, and Black Panther Party founder Bobby Seale, that the government got interested--and paranoid--and men like President Richard Nixon, FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, and right-wing Sen. Strom Thurmond began actively looking for ways to silence him (it was Thurmond who came up with the deportation idea). That's also when the film picks up. An array of talking heads weighs in, ranging from Ono and others sympathetic to Lennon's plight (Walter Cronkite, Sen. George McGovern, even Geraldo Rivera) to those on the other side, including Watergate conspirator G. Gordon Liddy. Though The U.S. vs. John Lennon is hardly impartial, it's safe to say that although Lennon was more an idealist than an activist, he was an influential celebrity whom Nixon viewed as a potential nuisance in an election year. And even once Nixon had won the '72 presidential race, the Immigration and Naturalization Service refused to drop its case. Why? "Anybody who sings about love, and harmony, and life, is dangerous to somebody who sings about death," says author Gore Vidal. "Lennon... was a born enemy of the U.S. He was everything they hated." Today it seems almost quaint that John Lennon was considered subversive durng the late 60's and early 70's. However, as this documentary reveals, post-Beatles Lennon was finding his voice and using his influence to shape the minds of the American youth. Whether collaborating with Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, and Bobby Seales, using his fame to help free John Sinclair, or writing songs and posting billboards to end the Vietnam War; he was being increasingly feared by Herbert Hoover, Richard Nixon, and many others. It's a bit of a grey area as to whether freedom of speech should be guaranteed to a foreigner who hasn't had to fight for it.

One of things that I liked about the film is that Yoko Ono is portrayed in a good light. So many times, she has been portrayed as some evil manipulator who clouded John Lennon's mind and caused the breakup of the Beatles. Here she is as shown as a woman who clearly loved and was in awe of John Lennon. He in turn was happiest when spending time with her and their son Sean In NYC. It's tragic that he was killed at age 40 in 1980, when his life and message were one of love and peace.

I rate this DVD one of the best DVd's on the 'other side' of John Lennon. I thought I knew all about John Lennon but was amazed to find that he was greater than I thought. The special features is a must. I've got my monies worth on the purchase of this dvd.

This movie is a must for all people who remember John Lennon. It is also for the younger generation who may not know about John Lennon. You'll see the evolution of a man from a rock musician to a peace activist. It is stunning, informative and entertaining all at once. The extras are as interesting as the movie itself. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about the peace movement and be entertained in the mean time.

Exceptionally moving but not the least bit sentimental, Concert for George is a splendid tribute to the late George Harrison, whose contributions to the Beatles were so often hidden in the long shadows of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. A year to the day after Harrison's November 29, 2001 death, Eric Clapton assembled some musicians--people who had played with Harrison and known him intimately, including McCartney, Ringo Starr, and Tom Petty--to perform his music at London's Royal Albert Hall. They take on not just the predictable ("My Sweet Lord" and "Something," beautifully sung by Billy Preston and Sir Paul, respectively), but also lesser-known fare like "Old Brown Shoe" and "Beware of Darkness," all to superbly empathetic effect. But the tune most likely to make you misty-eyed is "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," which brings together three of the five musicians who played on the original recording: Ringo on drums, Clapton replicating his own classic solo, and McCartney playing piano and harmonizing with Clapton's lead vocal. Concert for George enjoyed a brief theatrical release, but even those who caught it on the big screen will delight in this two-disc DVD edition. Disc 1 features the complete concert (sans interview and rehearsal footage, but with a few additional songs and in the original running order), while disc 2 contains the theatrical version and some additional backstage and photo material. If we only could hear what our friends and loved ones would say about our lifetime; we should be so blessed to have a gathering like this!

Getting right into it, what makes this so meaningful for me as a viewer and listener are the small touches that come from the interaction of the performers and family. The ironies that make a small-but-tremendous impact, gone in a blink of the eye, are why I love this DVD.

First, look at the hug between Paul and Ringo at the end; is there anyone who doubts that these two men said with a simple gesture, how much deeper they grasp the impact of their music and collaboration? It was as much a tribute to their legacy and all the "wish they'd get together again" that was first cut short by John's death.

Second, the poignancy and sensitivity of Paul's vocals on "All Things Must Pass," and what truly could be called George's eulogy song. That was McCartney's bandmate, once-upon-a-time lawsuit opponent, but ultimately, a dear friend. Third, hearing Eric Clapton singing the words to "Something" and realizing that both he and George shared a love for Patti Harrison which went beyond jealousy and kept itself from tearing apart their bonding. Add to that Ringo's sly replacement of George's "those old 12-bar blues" comment from the drum kit during Gary Brooker's enthusiastic rendition of "For You Blue" that everyone knows came from the Let It Be sessions, and the words to "Photograph": "I realize you're not coming back anymore."

From the other players and guests onstage, the profound respect for Ravi Shankar could humble anyone. Then take the brilliant sitar virtuosity of his daughter, Anoushka, whose flying fingers really bring to light the power and technique of an instrument that George helped us to appreciate--and add to that the majestic presentation of the Indian musicians. Finally, to just pull our heart strings, Joe Brown's ending song, "I'll See You In My Dreams" and the cutaway to the audience being showered with rose petals and the touching comments by Dhani Harrison.

George Harrison had his moments where human weaknesses caught up, but anyone who views this loving tribute will have no doubt that his strengths came from his generosity of spirit. We have been blessed by his talent and vision--and our ability to forgive what actions he took which we disliked.

Has it already been four years since this came out? My, how the tide of time pulls and rushes. I saw "The Concert for George" in a state-of-the-art, largely empty movie theater and found it wonderful, but it played even better in my home, channeled through my faithful and exquisite friend, my stereo. This, quite simply, and without belaboring a point made by, at last count, 319 others here on Amazon, is the finest concert film I have ever seen on countless levels. It is a melancholy joy from beginning to end, from Anoushka and the epic, ecstatic Indians to Clapton -- earning every letter in the word genius -- to the always playful Ray Cooper to Ringo to Dhani right through to the strum of the ukes and wonderland of a finish. The cinematography is magnificent as is the sound production and coherence of the band and musical vision. A splendid time is guaranteed for all. God bless John, Paul, George and Ringo.

I wanted to go to this concert in the worst way when it was announced. Why it took so long to see the DVD I don't know. This was by far the best concert video I have ever seen!

The Indian Orchestra which starts the show was amazing. Monty Python was, well, Monty Python. I loved it!

Eric Clapton was the only choice for musical director for this event. The songs they chose and the musicians chosen to do the leads were perfect! The arrangement of Something is worth owning the DVD alone.

Even if you're a casual George Harrison fan, this is a must have for your collection!

Bear in paradise whatever they are called. Get them off of Amazon. I paid over 55 bucks thinking thinking I was getting something special. Obvious bootleg. The freeking pictures and all are wrong, etc. etc. etc. These scums even lied-special book included etc. etc. Sorry folks for writing in haste and not taking the time to critique as properly but I am freaking pissed. Don't ever purchase from these bloodsuckers. Bought a couple of decently priced ones as gifts, at least they were not bootlegs and the price was decent.

This is hardly a collectors edition. It is a bootleg copy of the VHS. No other information or liner notes. Sound and picture are bad. But you get to see the Beatle's create some fine tunes. The rooftop concert is worth owning the video. Just wish I could have gotten one of better quality. 5 stars for content, 2 stars for quality of video.

i've purchased three of these (2 off of ebay and 1 here) and i can say that not all 'copies' of let it be are created equal. the best i've come across so far is the 2 disc version with all the additional footage. so if you're going to get one make sure it's that one.

It is hard not to get the impression that such 5* reviews are consistent with those that would have been written by the vendor offering for sale illegal bootleg copies of DVD material. As such, I do not find his/her reviews credible at all and wonder why Amazon allow them to stand.

High orthodox Beatlemaniacs can still grouse that the animated Fab Four are (literally) flat archetypes, but that's missing the sheer bloom of the music or the giddy, campy fun of the visuals. As one of the animators who worked on the Beatles' animated epic, YELLOW SUBMARINE, I am delighted by the almost universal praise heaped on this recent DVD release of the renovated and digitally remastered version of the movie.
It is immensely satisfying to know that a whole new generation has come to discover the delights of this 1960's flower power masterpiece, and with the legendary "Hey Bulldog" sequence - deleted from all but the original British prints - reinstated in all its bizarre glory, Beatles fans can at last experience the full version of this psychedelic animated odyssey as it was originally meant to be seen.
I know I am totally biased in giving the film a 5-star rating, but I would say that the twelve months I spent working on it (during 1967-1968) was, without a doubt, the single most exciting period in my almost 50-year career in the animation business. It was made even more memorable by the fact that, during production, I became engaged to Diana, my wife of nearly 40 years, who worked on the "LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS" sequence.
The struggle to produce anything resembling a final script while production surged inexorably on past the writers towards an impossible deadline, the creative arguments, the personality clashes, the budgetary nightmares, the physical kidnapping of the film - with the whole thing being propelled by the sheer exhilaration of knowing that we were all taking part in an astonishing revolution in animated films - all made for a heady and never-to-be-repeated experience. For a detailed look behind the scenes during the making of the film, read Dr. Bob Hieronimus' "INSIDE THE YELLOW SUBMARINE" and Al Brodax's "UP PERISCOPE YELLOW".
While the authors differ on some points, both books are packed with detail and anecdotes, and the debate about who said what and who did what on YELLOW SUBMARINE seems set to continue for quite some time. But there is one undeniable fact in all of this - if producer Al Brodax hadn't stuck his neck out and taken a chance on producing an animated feature all those years ago, the phenomenon that was the YELLOW SUBMARINE would never have set sail on its fantastic voyage. With the passage of time it's easy to forget the Beatles were once cutting edge and loved to tweak the nose of authority figures everywhere and the gentle tone of "Yellow Submarine" compared to today's animated features only emphasizes that point. At the time of "Yellow Submarine" the Beatles were at the height of their success, and while they undoubtedly wanted to send a message to authoritarian figures everywhere they didn't want to do that in a ham-fisted manner. Considering the counter-cultural wave that was about to follow, "Yellow Submarine" seems almost quaint by comparison and it moves at a considerably slower pace than modern day cineastes or casual viewers may care for.

"Yellow Submarine" depicts the conflict between the Blue Meanies (representing authoritarianism, be it Fascism, Communism, or whatever) and the peaceful residents of Pepperland. The Blue Meanies employ a means of weaponry to freeze the residents of Pepperland, leaving a sole resident to seek help via the Yellow Submarine. The set up of action, in particular, unfolds particularly slowly, giving time for the character of each Beatle to slowly be explained amid scenes of rather Peter Max inspired psychedelia. The overall effect isn't exactly trippy unless you're actually tripping I suppose. Several memorable Beatles songs are included throughout the film and at points it's almost like a precursor to music videos, but rather than enhancing the film they're more of a distraction, especially "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds."

Ultimately the Beatles arrive to save the day and the movie itself is a satire on the foolishness and limitations of authoritarianism in all its manifest forms, as well as the benefits of freedom. Some of the newer songs are a bit weak, especially "All Together Now" with its especially incongruous line about "chop the tree" which is hardly an eco-friendly lyric. Having seen it as a kid I doubtlessly enjoyed it, yet 30+ years on I could scarcely remember any details. Having seen it again I could scarcely be bothered to see it again anytime soon. I honestly couldn't recommend this except for die-hard Beatles fans, fans of animation or pyschedelia, or those looking for satirical films. "Yellow Submarine" is sadly more of a time capsule of a different time and place, when all you needed was love. It's a bit sad we've moved so far beyond that, but the message of fighting tyranny, despotism, and authoritarianism is all too appropriate today.

Out of print????.......2007-02-19

Just rented a copy of this because it's out of print! I can't believe it. These are THE BEATLES, not some jive time band. I'm not a musical marketing guy so I don't know exactly what your sales goals are to keep something like this in print, but it seems like after all of the care they put into giving this scrumptious sound, you might want to keep it in print.

Anyways...

This is good but not great stuff for me. I'm more of a Black Music fan than a Beatlemaniac. This is the first Beatles flick that I've seen. After initially resisting the Beatles due to their Motown imitator origins, I've followed the Ray Charles' of the world and taken to their superior songwriting. I've been watching a bunch of performance videos as of late and I decided to watch Yellow Submarine to see the Fab Four brought into animation interpretation light.

I dig the music. "All Together Now" is fun Paul stuff. I like the Sgt. Peppers stuff that's on the video. There are a couple of filler tracks, but on the whole the music is outstanding and I can see how Funkateers like George Clinton gain inspiration from works like Yellow Submarine. It's a short jump from Beatles vs. Meanies to Dr. Funkenstine vs. Sir Nose Devoid of Funk.

The plot for this takes on more metaphysical meat than it's willing to thoroughly digest. When they have John's character pontificate on Einstein and the Sea of Holes, I'm wishing that I saw The Phantom Tollbooth with Beatles songs for the soundtrack rather than a hodgepodge of writers trying to do justice to the trippy visions of the Revolver and Sgt. Peppers albums. I can see how the out there visions of this music would lead the Beatles to go back to basics with the upcoming White Album.

Man, I can't see how they let stuff like this go out of print, though. Maybe there's some sneaky packaging thing going on that I don't know about. Like not selling the CD any more solo and making Yellow Submarine a DVD/CD combo only for Beatles completists. Hmmmmmmm.

Jeremy Boo saying "...ad hoc, ad loc and *crypto quo*/so little time, so much to know." It is NOT "...crypto quo..." for those of you who missed your Latin lessons. It is "quid pro quo" which means "The concept of getting something of value in return for giving something of value." In any case Dr. Boo is quoting Latin cliches to sound more erudite and smarter than he is.

And Mrs. Malaprop..."A malapropism is an incorrect usage of a word by substituting a similar-sounding word with different meaning, usually with comic effect." Such as that famous line not by Jimi Hnedrix, "Excuse me while I kiss this guy" instead of the real lyrics "Excuse me while I kiss the sky."

Other than that, Yellow Submarine is one of those true classics that should not be missed.

It can hardly be a coincidence that this "deluxe edition" of John Lennon - Imagine should be issued in late 2005, a couple of months after what would have been the former Beatle's 65th birthday and mere days before the 25th anniversary of his death. Whether that's cynical, poignant, or just good marketing is moot; what matters is that Lennon's impact, not just as a musician but as a public figure, remains largely undiminished. The film, released theatrically in 1988, will already be familiar to many fans. "Narrated" by Lennon himself and culled from hundreds of hours of footage, much of it home movies shot by John and Yoko Ono, Imagine is a substantial, reasonably illuminating portrait of the man, warts and all, from childhood through the Beatle years, his solo career, and his life with Yoko straight up to his fatal encounter with Mark David Chapman. It's the new bonus features that are the principal draw here; but whether or not they qualify as "deluxe" is arguable. The Lennons' radio interview with a BBC reporter is notable mostly for John's patience in the face of idiotic questions like "Is love very important to young people today?" The ten or so minutes spent with Lennon's school headmaster, William Ernest Pobjoy (love the name), yield little insight, especially considering that the two were at the school at the same time for just one year, half a century ago; likewise, a new "making of" documentary with Ono, writer-director Andrew Solt, producer David Wolper, and others isn't exactly ground-breaking. However, a previously unreleased performance of "Imagine," with Lennon and some unknown accompanists on acoustic guitar, is nice, as is some heretofore unseen footage of the Lennons at home on their Tittenhurst Estate. Add to that a fine transfer and Dolby digital sound, and you have another addition to the filmed legacy of the Beatles--a subject that, for many of us, will never be old news. --Sam Graham

Imagine.......2007-07-06

The strength of "Imagine" lies in its clear-eyed depiction of its subject. Gifted and well-intentioned as he was, Lennon was no saint, and at times, misguided if not naïve. Example: John and Yoko taking to bed to protest the Vietnam War makes no more sense now than it did then. Conservative cartoonist Al Capp visits them and calls their action "self-aggrandizing" (don't miss this sequence). In truth, their motives were noble, but their tactics were too bizarre to resonate. Clearly Lennon was still assimilating an unprecedented super-stardom, and coping with the psychic scars of a mother who abandoned him, by letting Yoko infantilize and control him. As John himself wrote, "Whatever gets you through the night..." This revealing documentary is a must-see for any Beatles fan.

al capp's full of crap.......2007-06-30

One thing that stuck in my craw was the 'interview' with Al Capp. I always wonder, how can anyone criticise someone for seeking peace. What sick mind wants to parody an individual using his fame and fortune to try better the world? I usually believe such people have some serious and hidden ill-will towards mankind. With this in mind I did a few minutes Google search on Mr Capp and it didn't take long to find he was shortly after hounded out of his career by numerous allegations of sexual misconduct conducted at the time he was interviewing Lennon. A reprobate like that should not be given the time of day, let alone foul a film of one of the greatest artistic influences of the second half of the last century.

This 2-DVD edition could have easily fitted on 1 DVD. THe material is o.k. albeit a little self-congratulary with the director and producer of the DVD being interviewd on their own DVD. But it is little less than deceit to offer this as a 'double' DVD. Imagine John Lennon ripping you off.

I had been looking for this DVD because I had it on an old VHS tape and the sound and picture qualities were very poor. I love all the extras that are on this DVD! I can watch it over and over again and never get bored. I would definitely recommend this DVD to anyone!

The eternal fascination with all things Beatle pretty much guarantees an audience for any offering from the group and its respective members, and that will likely be the case with Paul McCartney: The Space Within US, a documentary recorded during his 2005 world tour (and broadcast in truncated form by A&E). Not that it's by any means bad. McCartney and his crack four-piece band are seen performing a variety of Fabs faves, from the delightful trifle that is "I'll Follow the Sun" to the genuine masterpiece that is "For No One" (the latter is a solo job, as are "I Will," "Yesterday," and others); as Apple computer poo-bah Steve Jobs, one of the many talking heads on hand to sing Macca's praises, points out, just hearing these classics played and sung by the guy who wrote (or co-wrote) 'em is a treat, and the great sound and high-definition video certainly don't hurt. On the minus side, the camera spends a lot of time in the audience, capturing their rapturous and often quite touching responses to the music. There are also bits focusing on a Beatles-obsessed family from Columbus, Ohio, all three generations of which are excited, to put it mildly, when Sir Paul pays them a brief visit before going onstage, and on two astronauts on board the International Space Station, for whom McCartney plays "English Tea" (from his 2005 CD Chaos and Creation in the Backyard) through a live feed from his Anaheim, California gig. These tangents may be distracting to fans who just want to watch McCartney and company at work, but considering that this was dubbed "the Us Tour," they should hardly come as a surprise. Same goes for the disparate line-up of celebs and others, ranging from Bill Clinton and various academic types to Tony Bennett and Eddie Vedder, whose comments punctuate (and occasionally interrupt) the music. Bottom line: there are better McCartney concert videos (like Live in Red Square), but this is a Beatle we're talking about here. For many, that will be more than enough. --Sam Graham

Make The Next One A Concert DVD........2007-06-30

EVERY McCartney concert video has the same format(fast paced montage of four seconds shots,dozens of zoom in-out and around and audience shots of moslty well endowed pretties, and ecstatic people, commentaries who makes you feel like you witnessing the second coming).The music is great,the band is youthfull and energetic and the performances are often inspired,so please give us a well produced concert like so many other rock performers put out(Concert for George,Gilmour,Clapton,Chili Peppers,etc...).

O.K, the bi-polar in me still loves this concert because of the great songlist,the very much rockier arrangements ,guitar heavy sound and fantastic drummer. This younger band has given Paul a major energy boost compared to his previous touring band with Robbie McIntosh and Hamish Stewart.

So,it sure ain't going to please everyone,but i watched it three times already. It has to mean something no??

Great concert dvd. Paul and the band are flawless.To much panning of the audience...... Way to much. Wanted to see more of the stage performance, but other than that, great dvd to have. Sound was great. A must have in your collection.

A Day in the Life.......2007-06-08

I really liked the dvd of this 2005 concert. It has more of a personal touch than some of the other concerts have. I've read quite a few complaints about there being too many shots of the crowds shouting and singing their hearts out, and not enough of Paul and the band. I thoroughly enjoyed the pics, especially because in most places the audio was lowered and you could hear Paul's voice commenting on his life and love of the music world. Like he said in the last concert "It's what I am"
I like how he looked with his hair grown longer in back which is the way I'll always remember him anyways . Was also great hearing some new songs we'd never heard done live before like "I Will", "Till There Was You", and "Drive My Car", boy did those songs take ME way back as I was 14 years old when the Beatles first came out.The concert gives you a chance to see Paul as a man who has endured a lot, but who doesn't feel one bit sorry for himself. He intends to keep on writing and performing till the day he stops breathing. After all, "It's what he is". Buy it--you won't be sorry, I promise.

The Next Best Thing to Being There LIve.......2007-05-19

I saw Paul McCartney live 3X in 2006 and I never do that for anyone--not even a Broadway play. I liked the fact the footage jumped around from people in the audience, the band, the audience and of course the stage. It's sound bytes, the way Gen Y prefers their info and entertainment. I'm a Boomer and I like that too. If you're looking for a straight conert, you're not gonna get that but there's no such thing as a straight concert. The fans connect in the audience and generally enjoy the experience of the concert. And every performance is a little bit different.

The ME Tour.......2007-05-02

Paul calls this the "us" tour at one point on the DVD. Rather it should be called the "ME" tour. Basically this is a collection of fan reaction shots interpersed with sound bites from personalities who are supposed to impress on us the importance of Paul to modern civilization. Oh yes, there are a few shots of Paul playing, but I don't remember any close ups and the camera never stays on him for even a full sentence during a song. Apparently, it is too important to show more fans in ecstasy, on ecstasy, or whatever, for us to actually watch Paul performing.

Okay, Paul, we get it. We are supposed to like you. Maybe we could like you more if you didn't keep reminding us and just let us watch?

The Beatles Anthology may be the motherlode for fans of the Fabs, but among other Beatle-related video offerings, only The Concert for George matches Paul McCartney - Live in Red Square for sheer emotional and musical impact. It's no coincidence that the latter two chronicle not just concerts but significant events--a memorial for Harrison (he had died a year earlier), and Sir Paul's first visit to the former Soviet Union.

For the Russian audience, McCartney's appearance in Moscow is little short of a miracle. The Beatles were banned for decades by the Soviet government, which regarded their music as the epitome of Western decadence and propaganda, and the fans' only access to the group was through the occasional photo or black market album. Their reaction to his 2003 visit is a mixture of frenzy and rapture; in interview after interview, what one fan calls the Beatles' "gentle intervention" is credited with helping to bring down the whole Soviet system, simply because they represented a creativity and freedom that had been almost totally silenced. And that's all before McCartney plays "Back in the U.S.S.R.," which inspires a response that simply must be seen and heard to be believed.

Elsewhere, Macca and his superb band perform a variety of Beatles tunes, along with some highlights from his solo career and stint with Wings. Considering the dozens of classics in the Lennon-McCartney catalogue, the majority of them never performed live by the group, he could hardly go wrong. Still, the choices are almost unerring; along with "Hey Jude," "Yesterday," and "Let it Be" are some unexpected treats (including "Getting Better" and "She's Leaving Home" from the Sgt. Pepper album, as well as "Fool on the Hill," "I've Just Seen a Face," and "Two of Us"). And that's not all: additional footage from a show in St. Petersburg features "Drive My Car," "Helter Skelter," and a powerful medley of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band" and "The End." The sound and visuals are good, and the extra features (including a brief parallel history of the Beatles and the U.S.S.R. in the '60s) are interesting. No, the Beatles will never reform. Outstanding, but rearranged the order of the Red Square Concert Hurts.......2007-07-03

There certainly is no shortage of live material available from Paul McCartney. Anyone who has listened to McCartney's live performances in recent years have usually not been disappointed. In 2003, McCartney took his act to Moscow to play a live concert in Red Square. The performance of former member of the Beatles in Red Square is considered an amazing feat, because as recently as two decades ago, this wouldn't have even been a thought. The former Soviet government had banned the Beatles because they were considered to be representative of what was wrong with Western Culture. However the Beatles had still managed to build up a major "underground" during the time they were banned. This DVD, "Paul McCartney - In Red Square" chronicles both the concert and McCartney's reflections of Russia. The DVD collection consists of McCartney's concert and visit to Moscow. It also includes part of the concert that McCartney would deliver in St. Petersburg, Russia on a subsequent trip to Russia. The only disappointment with the material lies that the concert experience is a bit incomplete.

The real issue lies with the way the Red Square material is laid out. There are twenty tracks that show performances of the material from Red Square. As discussed later in this review, the material is top-notch. Woven between the material is some of the documentary information about trip to Russia, I don't have an issue with the documentary material. However the songs from the Red Square concert were rearranged to fit the "story" of the documentary. When I purchase a concert DVD, I usually prefer the concert material to be from a single night, complete (no edits, no omissions), and in order of performance. These concepts allow for a complete feel for the concert. Unfortunately by mixing up the performance, this does take away from the effect. I also think that some of the performances were not shown. I think it would have been a blast if we saw the whole Red Square performance from start to finish in its entirety - even if the documentary material was woven in. It is worth noting that the St. Petersburg material has its "documentary" piece at the beginning - and appears to follow more of a chronological ordering. However, the St. Petersburg material is definitely a subset of that performance.

Here are ten things to look for:

1-When combining the Red Square and St. Petersburg performances, there is no overlap. The only song that is repeated in both segments is "Back in the USSR" - and this is for obvious reasons. There are twenty tracks from Red Square and ten tracks from the St. Petersburg.

2-Both concerts are going to give you a great feel for the talent of McCartney's band. No doubt the highlight of the band is Abe Laboriel Jr. - who has to be considered one of the greatest drummers in the world. His drumming is ferocious throughout both performances. On the St. Petersburg performance, Laboriel delivers an incredible drum solo on "The End".

3-While I feel the Red Square performance would have been better served by having the full-concert in its entirety, the individual content is still incredible. You will definitely get a feeling for the passion the Russian people have for Paul McCartney and the Beatles. All in all, the crowds in Red Square and St. Petersburg were lively ones and clearly help to enhance the whole live experience.

4-I actually feel the start of the Red Square material was a bit "slow" on the first five tracks (with the exception of "Band on the Run"). From Track 6 on - I wasn't disappointed.. Keep in mind this doesn't translate to a slow start to the concert as the material is mixed up. The abbreviated version of "Getting Better" should have been done in its entirety.

5-The documentary material is very interesting. There are comments by former President Mikhail Gorbachev on his feelings on the positive influence of the Beatles music on the youth. Perhaps one of the most interesting points is when current President Vladimir Putin admits that he used to listen to Beatles records during the period in which they were banned. We also hear similar comments from the Russian Defense Minister who also used to listen to Beatles records.

6-McCartney himself provides much of the commentary during the "documentary" portions of the Red Square material. I found this documentary material to be the strongest. I would have also have liked to hear some commentary by the band members though.

7-The scene during "Calico Skies" when Vladimir Putin makes a surprise appearance at the concert has got to be considered one of the great moments in concert history during the Rock era.

8-While there is a lot made of the emotion of performing "Back in the USSR" in Russia (and it lives up to expectations), there are plenty of other "Hall of Fame" performances. Namely from Red Square: "Band on the Run" "Fool on the Hill", "Calico Skies", "Live and Let Die", "Maybe I'm Amazed", and "Hey Jude". From St. Petersburg: "Drive My Car", "Helter Skelter", "Let Me Roll It", and "Jet" really stand out.

9-In recent years, McCartney's performances of "Hey Jude" have been incredible. In particular, it is the way McCartney gets the audience to participate. The scene of this occurring in Red Square is breathtaking and might be the strongest of all the Hey Jude performances. Watch as one of the men who flank Vladimir Putin is heavily into the concert and sings along. McCartney even calls out "Mr Putin" by name during the song.

10-There are two good "extras"- 1) "Memories from Red Square" - more reflections by McCartney on the performances; 2) "Russia and the Beatles: A Brief Journey" - a short feature that parallels the Beatles and Russian history.

Overall, if the Red Square concert was shown in its entirety, this would be a grand slam homerun. However this is still a very solid DVD - highly recommended.
