A confident hybrid of M*A*S*H, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and Dr. Strangelove, Three Kings is one of the most seriously funny war movies ever made. Improving the premise of Kelly's Heroes with scathing intelligence, it explores the odd connection between war and consumerism in the age of Humvees and cellular phones. Writer-director David O. Russell's third film (after Spanking the Monkey and Flirting with Disaster), it's a no-holds-barred portrait of personal conscience in the volatile arena of politics, played out by one of the most gifted filmmakers to emerge in the 1990s.
George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube, and Spike Jonze (director of Being John Malkovich) play a quartet of U.S. soldiers who, disillusioned by Operation Desert Storm, decide to steal $23 million in gold hijacked from Kuwait by Saddam Hussein's army. Getting the bullion out of an Iraqi stronghold is easy; keeping it is a potentially lethal proposition. By the end of their mercenary mission, the Americans can no longer ignore wartime atrocities (and neither can we--the film is boldly unflinching), and conscience demands their aid to Iraqi rebels abandoned by President George Bush's fickle wartime policy. This is serious stuff indeed, but Russell infuses Three Kings with a keen sense of the absurd, and the entire film is an exercise in breathtaking visual ingenuity. Despite a conventional ending that's mildly disappointing for such a brashly original film, Three Kings conveys the brutal madness of war while making you laugh out loud at the insanity. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Surprisingly Good.......2007-07-06
I didn't expect much from this movie, but it turned out to be quite entertaining. It had a certain realism to it, and I like that, instead of the absurd storylines that are so frequent these days.
Clever, funny and different.......2007-06-23
David O. Russel's 'Three Kings' is a hard film to lock down into a particular genre. It combines elements of a war movie, a comedy and a drama, and manages to do it very well. People wanting to see lots of big guns and bombs should stay well clear, there are video games to keep you amused. Anyone who appreciates witty, clever and slightly off beat films is well advised to see it.
Telling the untold story of the Gulf War, with Saddam's army more worried about shooting rebel Iraqis then allied soldiers, was a brave move in Hollywood, because many people don't want to know that a democratic uprising in Iraq was being crushed while the Allies sat by in the desert. Rather than being an action movie, the film develops into an exploration of three soldiers and the human development caused by their experience of the war, and the extraordinary circumstances they place themselves in.
Many innovative and experimental cinematic styles are used nicely, and solid performances are recorded by Clooney, Wahlberg, Jonze and Cube. The characters are portrayed as normal human beings, both noble and flawed at the same time, and even the Iraqi soldiers are seen as people rather than typical war movie bad guy cannon fodder. This film genuinely showed me the desperation felt by many Iraqis for the Allies to help them as they starved and fought desperately against Saddam.
One of my favorite films, and probably one of the most underrated films of its time
Don't like Clooney, what are you Looney?.......2007-05-13
Sorry about the title, Three kings was not a movie I chose to see on the big screen. My wife recommended it and I found it was an entertaining flick. Not a desert storm movie like Jar Heads, a different take on an old story line.
Interesting Adventure film set In Iraq after Gulf War 1.......2007-04-09
A group of Gi's in Kuwait following the first Gulf War find a map on a prisoner that leads them back across the border on a gold hunt. The country is in a state of chaos with Sadam's soldiers taking their revenge on anti- Sadam citizens. The GI's get caught up in a more complicated situation with refugees then they planned on.
Well conceived and written with excellent special effects, this is a hard movie to categorize. It's sort of Oceans 11 goes to Iraq, A combination military adventure/heist movie with some interesting social commentary and moralizing thrown in.
All three of the principal actors do a good job but Ice Cube is particularly good in this. George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg are fine in their respective roles.
Definitely entertaining and different.
Good movie.......2007-03-30
This is a good movie that starts out as an adventure and slowly changes into a morality movie. I like it and think its setting is contemporary and timely.

Decades ago, documentary filmmaker Leon Gast attempted to complete a feature about the 1974 "Rumble in the Jungle" championship bout between boxers Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in Kinshasa, Zaire. Sundry complications, though, held up the project until its release in 1996. It was well worth the delay. From Gast's perspective of modern history, the six weeks Ali and Foreman were forced to spend waiting in Africa for their fight to take place now looks like an important moment in America's cultural understanding of African American roots. In a nutshell, Ali had been stripped of his heavyweight champion title because his opposition to the Vietnam War-era draft had landed him in prison. Reigning champ Foreman agreed to a Don King-promoted match in Kinshasa, but after all parties got there the fight was put off. Gast captures the charismatic Ali, in the ensuing days and weeks, going out among the people and getting to know them while the more reclusive Foreman keeps to his own company. Meanwhile, King brings over black American artists such as James Brown and the Spinners to mix it up with African musicians. The sense of excitement and connection is thrilling, as is the boxing footage of Foreman and Ali finally taking swings at one another in a titanic duel. Writers George Plimpton and Norman Mailer, each of whom was covering the fight as journalists, are on hand to recollect the details. Whether you're a fight fan or not, this is a unique experience and a fascinating insight into America's sense of identity. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Great Kinetic Movie Making.......2007-04-24
Certainly one of the greatest sports movies of all time, and one of my favorites. I can't think of an athlete in public life who has brought me more pleasure than Muhammad Ali. This movie serves as a record of the man and his times, brilliant, funny, charismatic, and athletic.
Great Documentary about Ali's Fight with Foreman.......2007-04-08
I am a huge fan of Muhammad Ali. He had such confidence in himself (at least outwardly) that he taught me how to have confidence in myself. I have been inspired by his strong spirit.
You get a good snapshot of this in When We Were Kings. Ali is heavily favored to be knocked out by George Foreman, who enters this fight against Ali 40-0 with 37 knockouts.
But watch Ali draw strength from the African people in Zaire. Watch him as he focuses on both his training and in the PR for the fight. Watch him mix it up with James Brown in a concert in the days leading up to the fight. Soak in all the eyewitness commentary of Budd Schulberg and George Plimpton and others who were in Zaire.
This is a well made period piece, capturing Ali in the days prior to one of his best nights ever. Excellent!
Great Documentary.......2007-03-27
Great Documentary. It gave us a new perspective about Muhamadd Ali 's personality and all the details behind this fight. Definitely, a collector's item.
One of My Absolute Favorite Films.......2007-03-21
I was going to say that it was my favorite documentary, but it transcends the form and puts its shadow across any type of movie you could think of. "When We Were Kings" is as inspiring as it is educational; the fight between Foreman and Ali will show you a philosophy so profound and so sharp it'll feel as if a glove is making contact with your cheek.
Absolutely stunning, recommended for all - never before has being "up against the ropes" had such awesome effects on my thinking.
EMOCIONANTE ¡¡¡¡¡¡

The Original Kings of Comedy achieves the seemingly impossible task of capturing the rollicking and sly comedy routines of stand-up and sitcom vets Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer, and Bernie Mac and the magic of experiencing a live concert show. Director Spike Lee and his crew plant a multitude of cameras in a packed stadium and onstage (as well as backstage, as they follow the comedians) to catch the vivid immediacy of the show, which is as much about the audience as it is about the jokes. And the jokes are funny.
All four riff fast and furiously (and with much swearing) on the world in terms of race, family, sex, and in one routine, outer space. Hughley takes comedic aim at extreme sports and eating disorders, while Cedric harks back to the day when gang fights meant calling opponents out onto the dance floor. Bernie Mac, the self-confessed id comedian of the group, presents a routine that is simultaneously offensive and hilarious--an apt reminder that comedy can and should be vicious if we are ever to learn to laugh at ourselves and hopefully be the better for it. Harvey, who acts as the MC for the show, has some transcendent moments with the crowd (a '70s slow jam sing-along, anyone?) that have to be seen to be believed. There's no doubt as to why Kings was a hit with concert and movie audiences; the laughs keep coming, in the tradition of Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy, with a sharp eye on the nuances of today's racially affected culture. --Shannon Gee

This 1961 version of Jesus' story gives historical context to the best-known Biblical tale and features many memorable moments, such as a moving Sermon on the Mount and a vixenish Salome dancing for her stepfather in a performance that rivals today's MTV video offerings. Orson Welles keeps the 168-minute film moving along with informative narration helpful to those who haven't read the New Testament in a while. Made with backgrounds that resemble Southern California more than Palestine and a European and American cast--including a blonde, blue-eyed Jesus and an Irish-accented Mary--this movie has the definite stamp of Hollywood. --Kimberly Heinrichs
Description
The life of Jesus Christ is powerfully chronicled in this intelligent, gripping epic starring JEFFREY HUNTER, ROBERT RYAN, RIP TORN and a cast of thousands. From the producer of the epic spectaculars El Cid and The Fall of the Roman Empire and the director of Rebel Without a Cause and 55 Days at Peking comes a vivid retelling of the world's greatest story.
Customer Reviews:
epic films.......2007-05-14
this movie is following the bible in almost everything.
i consider it to be a very sincere movie with good actors - good screenplay - perfect scenes.
especially i enjoyed the second part of the film - very well done.
i can advice to purchase this movie - very well restored and 5.1 sound.
Maybe the finest life of Christ on film.......2007-04-21
I thought George Stevens' impeccably crafted and literate THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD (1965) was the finest life of Jesus Christ on film. Then I took another look recently at director Nicholas Ray's KING OF KINGS (1961) and changed my mind. I don't know what the best life of Jesus is, but KING OF KINGS has a charismatic and sympathetic Christ (Jeffrey Hunter in the performance of his career), a great John the Baptist (Robert Ryan), the definitive Salome's dance (luscious Brigid Bazlen) and the ultimate Sermon on the Mount (with 7,000 extras on a Spanish hillside), a striking Last Supper with disciples sitting at a Y-shaped bench, a strong Crucifixion, and a reverent Resurrection. At 171 minutes (including ten minutes of Miklos Rozsa music), Samuel Bronston's production seems the ideal length to tell the story of Christ. The screenplay is by Oscar winner Philip Yordan.
I have often had trouble with Ron Randell as the Roman Lucius; he is a major character here and only a cameo in other Biblical epics. Same with Harry Guardino as Barabbas. They are, in actuality, the second and third most important characters in Ray's film. But both actors are magnificent. Lucius lets us inside the Roman power circle to understand the Roman way of thinking, so it is nice to have his role be big. And Barabbas answers the question a lot of viewers may ponder, namely who was this convicted killer whom the crowd chose to live while Jesus died.
The movie, narrated by Orson Welles, starts the story with Pompey in Judea in 63 B.C. This helps give us information on what Judea was like in the several decades before Jesus was born. Among a superb supporting cast are Siobhan McKenna as Mary, Royal Dano as Peter, Hurd Hatfield as Pontius Pilate, Viveca Lindfors as Herod Antipas' mistress, Frank Thring as Herod Antipas, and many more. The sets and costumes are gloriously colorful; what was the Academy thinking when they were not nominated for Oscars in 1961, along with no cast mermbers or screenplay? Rozsa's music is glorious. And the movie is presented on DVD in about a 2.2 ratio for 70mm Super Technirama.
KING OF KINGS is powerful, intelligent, colorful, and reverent. I think Jesus himself would be impressed by it.
An Americanized 1950's Idea of Christ and his Mission........2007-04-01
This film of course is now somewhat obscure considering all that has been done since the time of the film on the life of Christ. Jeffery Hunter is the most handsome Christ you will ever see on screen. The apostles are all clean cut. The movie features very colorful clothing to catch the eye. A great musical score by Miklos Roza, which is a particular favorite of classical music fans to request on the radio even today! The Gospel is rather compressed and the ministry of Christ in particular. However, that is not to say it is ineffective. The Sermon on the Mount scene is actually an encapsulated all comprehensive review of Christian philosophical points boiled down to one mass meeting. The movie is not adherent to Bible events and contains a lot of fiction, especially with respect to the activity of the aristocracy and the romans. It tries to tell several stories, such as Barabbas, a Roman Officer, Mary the mother of Christ, John the Baptist and definitely has the most beautiful Salome you will ever see dance on screen. The taking of the cross, the whipping, the death, are all handled very delicately. Not too much blood or grief. Jeffery Hunter is seen after the Easter rising and is shown symbolically at the end very well with the apostles gathered on the beach and his shadow overwhelms them as he tells them to depart to preach the Gospel and they leave 2 by 2. A really effective scene for a movie so entrenched in 50s culture. Having seen this movie as a child in the sixties and seeing it again now in this century, I think it should not be too criticized with our 20/20 perception now. Back then it was after all a different time and culture, one that does not exist today and should be viewed perhaps in a nostalgic way, worth a viewing, but don't depend on it for filling you in on Biblical truth.
No Other Even Comes Close.......2007-01-30
This is my absolute favorite Biblical Epic.I will concede to only one flaw and that is Jeffrey Hunter having blue eyes! I wish he had worn brown colored contacts.Otherwise he is the ONLY Jesus portrayed in film that I think exudes the kind of persona that I picture Jesus having. I know two others who feel exactly the same way, about King Of Kings. I love this movie from beginning to end,and I consider myself blessed to own it. Ok, it is also not 100% scriptural, such as does anyone still not know that the three wise men never saw the infant Jesus in the manager? They Saw "the child" Jesus in the home of Mary and Joseph! I have yet to see a single Biblical movie that IS 100% scriptural, however!
All other films that have attempted to portray Jesus have been a major disappointment for me,and I am now awaiting "The Jesus Film" to arrive at my library,to give it a chance. So far I cannot stand most such films, such as the horrible "Jesus Of Nazareth"(must be the most unlikeable Jesus ever portrayed) and the even worse,"The Greatest Story Ever Told, the Greatest Bore Ever)"!
The Robe,A Perfect Stranger,Ushpizin,The Miracle Of Marcellino,The Maldonado Miracle, and the biblical ones ones done by Turner such as Joseph, are wonderful, and highly recommended by this Christian, but for a movie about Jesus,King Of Kings has no competition,in my opinion.
One great Potrayal of Jesus Christ.......2007-01-14
This movie was made mainly to potray the cycle of Jesus' Christ life, and what he when through, sacrificing himself for our sins. People may think that it may be too religous for their standards, but everyone has their own beliefs. I highly recommend you view the film it is very innovating and emotional. Being a christian myself everytime I watch this film it uplifts my spirits and I hope it will do the same with yours.

You member. Member.......2006-04-07
When I first started to watch Latin Kings of comedy I was kinda bored with it. The first two comedians weren't that funny(and their considerd latin kings of comedy). Some laughs now and then but nothing too funny. But when George Lopez came on he saved this DVD. Non stop laughter. This man is truely the funniest Mexicano today(representing my people). Do you have to be Latin to get this. Not really. I showed my friend and he ain't latin but he was dyin when he saw this. The best part is the Jack in the Box skit."Ask a mexican what kind of fountain drinks do you have". You have to watch it to get the joke. Paul Rodriguez was ok. Probably the best part in his stand up is when he talks about washing his dad's car. Cheech Marin I was kinda dissapointed. He is very funny but he didn't really show it in here.So this dvd is funny and has good material but I feel they should've gotten more funnier comideans and replace the first two.Carlos Mencia would of been a good choice. If you find yourself laughing hard with this then I check out Why You Crying by George Lopez. It's more funnier stuff and better than this.
Hilarious.......2006-02-06
This was a great Dvd.Five Hilarious comedians,my favorite was George Lopez. When he talks about his grandmother and aunt, weddings.Paul Rodriqez's story about his uncle and the Bidet had me laughing tears.Plus Cheech Marin as the host was also funny.Great Latin Humor with great comedians equals one Hilarious Dvd.I'd recommend to anyone wanting to tickle their funny bone.

Here's another gritty independent film that tries to invade Tarantino territory by casting Christopher Walken--that most reliable of indie-film actors--as a Mobster who gets chummy with a group of preppie-like young men and becomes the victim of a kidnapping scheme. One of the kidnappers (Henry Thomas) has a sister who's been abducted by another group of kidnappers, and they've bagged Walken for his Mob connections and negotiating power. What follows is a game of psychological strategy in which the desperate group of guys slowly lose their advantage to the smarter, more experienced gangster--even though they've got Walken tied to a chair. The situation turns volatile when the young men start to doubt the wisdom of their strategy and suspect betrayal within the group, and Suicide Kings turns into a talky, repetitious thriller only partially redeemed by Denis Leary's cagey role as Walken's Mob lieutenant. The movie's a showcase for its cast of rising talent (including Jay Mohr, Jeremy Sisto, Johnny Galecki, and Sean Patrick Flanery), but not even Walken can hold it all together. What's best about the film is Leary's sinister presence in a peripheral role and Walken's trademark villainy, here toned down to a steady, simmering menace. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
This mob film has it all.......2007-04-03
Christopher Walken is a former organized crime figure that gets kidnapped by a group of preppies that hold him for ransom. (This happens right up front in the story so I'm not giving anything away). The kidnappers realistically come off as bungling amateurs. Walken's presence is overwhelming (even duct taped to a chair) and he looms large over the whole story. Great perfomance. Throughout the film, the viewer keeps anticipating, "Somebody is going to really get hurt here". They do, of course.
The story has plenty of mystery and multiple twists. There are gruesome execution and mutilation scenes. It has laugh out loud comedy - special mention to Denis Leary and his "stingray boots". He plays a thug and is appropriately menacing and crude, but he is genuinely funny . . . even while brutally beating a man with a golf club. The R rating is appropriate.
A well written and directed film. Camera work a little unimaginative. Good sound.
If you are OK with the violence, you are guaranteed an entertaining experience with this film.
I Give This Film Five Cowbells.......2007-03-19
Is Christopher Walken the Man or what? For the first hour or so I thought Walken was essentially in paycheck mode deferring to his young co-stars(Jay Mohr, Henry Thomas, Johnny Golicki, et al), who aren't bad by the way, while he's duct-taped to a wheelchair slowly bleeding to death from a dismembered digit. Then the Walken-ator jumps into action and the wheels are in motion. You watch him size up his captors and turn the situation around to his advantage. Was there any doubt! As a bonus you also get Dennis Leary as an associate of Chris who shows the young turks that they're not ready to play with the big boys. You can say that "Suicide Kings" has a little bit of the Tarantino influence as well as "The Usual Suspects". There is enough originality in director Peter O'Fallon's film to differentiate it from it's predecessors. In a nutshell, "Walken fans, rejoice!"
BUSKET.......2007-03-09
This film is so popular that I imagine there isn't much I can say that hasn't already been said. I will tell you that it is worth your time for the Dennis Leary 'Busket' scene (oh yeah and to hear him talk about his shoes)- Leary is always hilarious. Yes, this film is indeed dark and funny- but when have you known Walken to be anything different?! LOL Hold on to your fingers (you'll understand after you watch), prepare yourself for the twisted ending and ENJOY!
Awesomely Gruesome.......2007-02-18
Christopher Walken is an excellent man of importance. these kids in the movie, superb job in creating the roles of first time kidnappers!
Suicide Kings.......2007-01-04
Another interesting Christopher Walken film...with the added enticement of Dennis Leary as a scary guy who doesn't like men who beat women. This film is richly written with well developed characters who surprise you. Walken is great as a kidnapped mob guy, who ultimmately reassures us that you're crazy to target a guy who really knows how to hurt people. After all, that's his business. Throughly engrossing.

This period drama is hot, hot, hot. Stylish and sexy, it is adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love, by Oscar Hijuelos, the story of two brothers who flee from Cuba in the early 1950s, heading for New York. Hoping to make a name for themselves as famous musicians, the duo face hardships and painful discoveries along the way. Armand Assante is the older of the two, with a smoldering Antonio Banderas as his younger, more impetuous brother. (In his first English-speaking role, Banderas delivered all of his lines phonetically.) The pulsating, sweaty energy of the first half of the film is not sustained throughout. Partly this is because a movie about the rise and fall of minor celebrities has been done to death. Even when the action slows down, however, the story does not bore. There is too much sensuality and vitality exuded by both Assante and Banderas. --Rochelle O'Gorman
Description
In the 1950s, two Cuban brothers come to America to seek fame and fortune as musicians.
Customer Reviews:
It never gets old........2007-01-05
I recently purchased "Mambo Kings" on DVD. I've watched it many times on VHS and it was time to update and use my surround sound system so that I get the full effect of the music. If your into good looking men with a passion for latin music and women, you need to see this one. Makes me wish I was born earlier to participate in the dancing too.
MAMBO KINGS.......2006-07-03
I found this movie just average, but then I might have expected more from this film because of all the hype it had been given.
Beautiful Maria of My Soul.......2006-06-04
I rate this movie 3 stars and a half (or 7 out of 10), and I definetely recommend it to everyone. It is entertaining, the music is great, and the actors are good. I think this is the first movie Banderas did in America, and he was learning English while shooting the movie. He is a great actor, that caught the directors' eye for his roles in Almodývar's movies, and he did great. Jeremmy Irons did a screen test for that role, but Antonio got the job instead. The night club scenes are really good, and the best is the relationship between the two brothers, who leave Cuba behind searching for the American Dream (and trying to save Nýstor's life).
It is very interesting to follow the director's commentary after you watched the movie, because he tells you a lot of interesting things. I know the movie should speak by itself, but once you watch the movie, if you have time, give that extra a try. It is really worth it, and one of the reasons we should be thankful of the DVD format.
The best in the movie is the music (we get to see Tito Puente and Celia Cruz, both already passed away now), and the worst may be the plot, with some "holes" that in my opinion make the movie weaker. For example, the relationship between Dolores and Cýsar could have been developed deeper (I did not read the book, so I do not know if the movie is 100% loyal to the book). The DVD comes with a "Behind the Scenes" documentary, which is nice to see, but it is too short (sometimes they are too long, but this is too short) and you get to hear all maine actors and the director sepaking about the movie.
Loosely Based On The Hijuelos Novel.......2005-10-24
Oscar Hijuelos' great novel The Mambo Kings Play Songs Of Love forms the basis for this film although the movie version stops about halfway through Hijuelos' story largely ignoring the tragic second half of Cesar Castillo's life without his brother.
The brothers are played by Armand Assante and Antonio Banderas and both are extraordinarily well cast. Assante conveys the more hedonistic Cesar with greaat intensity and Banderas actually steals the film with a remarkable performance as the more sensitve brother Nestor.
Fine casting, including a fairly strong performance by the late Celia Cruz makes this movie a pleasure to watch. Marusckha Detmers plays Nestor's wife Dolores and while she looks great she poses more effectively than she acts.
Overall this is a fine entertaining film and while the plot is derived from the novel in order to translate it to the screen some obvious liberties were taken with the story that frankly do not detract much from the enjoyment of a film that stands on it's own merit.
The backdrop of 1950's Mambo-crazed NYC is also very cool and well done.
Cool film!.......2005-03-12
Reportedly, this is Antonio Banderas' first English-speaking film. This film is set in the late 1940's to early 1950's Here,we hear the great sound of Mambo, probably based on the concept of TV's I Love Lucy.

Former Scotland Yard detective Albert Tyburn (Trevor Eve) finds himself in colonial Nairobi, the setting of Out of Africa, as head of a new criminal investigation unit. Imagine an athletic Hercule Poirot in the heat of the Kenyan sun. Superintendent Tyburn's unrelentingly independent policing style is remarkably effective against the murder, arson, blackmail, slave-trading, and other crimes that await him. The most serious impediments to Tyburn's investigations come from pompous Police Commissioner Ronald Burkitt (Michael Byrne) and the elitist, expatriate community's secret passions and vices. The outstanding cast includes Tyburn's talented crime-solving assistants, Constable Jonah Karinde (Freddie Annobil-Dodoo) and Assistant Superintendent James Valentine (Julian Rhind-Tutt), and his romantic interest, Emma Fitzgerald (Susannah Harker). The attractive, strong-willed biplane pilot Fitzgerald bears remarkable similarity to the real-life Beryl Markham, who recounted her experiences in West with the Night. The three episodes, "Private Lives," "Hide in Plain Sight," and "The Sport of Kings," are well written and action-packed. Mobil Masterpiece Theatre's Heat of the Sun will delight fans of fine detective work. --Tara Chace

In these three mysteries: Private Lives, Hide in Plain Sight and The Sport of Kings, Tyburn uses his cunning, courage and headstrong policing style to battle arson, drug-dealing, murder and the creeping colonialism of Kenya's hedonistic expatriate community.

Customer Reviews:
Compelling stories and great acting combine for terrific entertainment.......2007-07-04
I too saw this series years ago and loved it. It's an amazing treatise on how the British went to a certain part of the world and thought they owned it, and how Tyburn comes in and treats everyone equally, to most of the "polite society's" astonishment. I have followed Trevor Eve's career since then, since I like his work so well ... "Waking the Dead" is a wonderful series that he's been in for the last 3-4 years. I first saw Susannah Harker in "Jewel in the crown" and she impressed me there. I just wish that this series had been filmed in widescreen vs full screen to get the full impact of the cinematography and the wonderful vistas of Africa.
first sight of trevor eve.......2007-03-28
this was the first ever i had seen or heard of trevor eve, and quite by accident, surfing channels. excellent for the colonial times and quite apt i think.
Heat of the Sun.......2006-11-14
Excellent PBS Mystery series. A great period piece. Excellent attention to costumes and equipment. However, in an African colony, in 1931, one would hardly expect all of the autos to be the current models. All of the vehicles used are 1931s, except for one coupe, which is a 1932. But only a vintage car buff would notice.
Fantastic and Intelligent - Compare to Foyle's War.......2006-09-04
I have hoped that this series would be continued past the first three stories - in vain. If you like Foyle's War (which has, fortunately, been continued), you will like Heat of the Sun. It's realistic; it's intelligent. It can be uncomfortable because this is not a pretty world. On the other hand, there are "good guys", just like in the real world, and, just like in the real world, they are not cartoon cut-outs, but flawed humans who are heros nonetheless. I very much recommend this series.
Excellent, one of the best PBS Mystery! series.......2006-08-06
Excellent series set in beautiful Kenya in 1931, the time of Beryl Markham and Isak Dinesen. The protagonist, Tyburn, is attractive, intelligent, knows police procedures and refuses to back down when determining who is guilty of the crimes committed. He has the right attitude (including contempt) toward the so-called elite of England and of Nairobi. He believes that no one is above the law. He also is not a bigot and treats the native Africans as they should be treated, as equals. The relationship with Emma (a bush pilot) is just right as to intensity and scope; it blends in very well with, but does not detract from, the plot. The acting is excellent and the plots very interesting. Having been to Kenya, this series did appear to have been filmed there and the settings appeared authentic and the scenery beautiful. Anyone who enjoys mysteries set in interesting historic locations with romance will thoroughly enjoy this series. I wish more of this series had been done.

This enjoyable 1976 film by John Badham (Saturday Night Fever) concerns the efforts of a barnstorming baseball team of African American players to work around the dominance of the Negro National League. Set in 1939, the swift, impressive, and entertaining troupe of personality-rich athletes easily make the viewer wistful for this level of spiritedness on a green field. While the story is a bit halting, the script intelligently reflects some of the difficulties and requirements of black players at that time to find success in the game. The excellent cast includes Billy Dee Williams, whose character is based on Satchel Paige, and James Earl Jones, whose part is suggestive of the tragic Josh Gibson, as well as Richard Pryor, Ted Ross, DeWayne Jessie, and Stan Shaw. Produced by Motown's old film division, the musical score, not surprisingly, is highly memorable. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
A BASEBALL CLASSIC.......2007-03-21
The entire life and the atmosphere of The Negro League baseball era was brilliantly portrayed from the barnstorming perspective. The script was a bit of a stretch at times but the superb acting by Billy Dee Williams and James Earl Jones kept you waiting for each scene. The language used was authentic as were the town attitudes. It contained some athleticism in parts that was also very truthful.
Good old time baseball movie.......2006-03-09
The movie is a classic. the service from the seller was excellent. Received the dvd withing a week of the order.
A True Classic .......2005-12-04
If there is any such thing as a comedy classic, this would be it.
Great baseball movie, substandard DVD.......2002-02-28
This is a great baseball movie. Great performances from Billy Dean Williams and James Earl Jones. I was a little disappointed in the transfer and the sound on this dvd, and the extras are lacking. However, this is not a commonly sought-after movie (although it should be). A great story and a great movie based on the novel by William Brashler.
Fitting homage to the spirit of Negro League Baseball.......2001-03-12
I've always enjoyed this film ever since I was a pre teen. But as i've viewed the film in subsequent years i've come to regard it as more than just a very entertaining film.
The first point that i'd like to make is that it would be very easy to look at this film as a glossed over historical account of Jackie Robinson, Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson. The film is not that although three of the main characters are certainly based upon those great men. For a more historical recount, albeit with some dramatic license, I would recommend HBO's fine Soul of the Game.
I think it's difficult for many in my generation (under 40) to really appreciate the struggles and agony that most black americans endured just a short time ago in our history. This film however does a fabulous job of weaving the reality of barnstorming with the joy, athleticism and sorrow that was Negro League Baseball in addition to the pervasive racism that flourished throughout america at that time. For that alone it shouldn't be missed.
All that notwithstanding it's a fabulous entertainment. Richard Pryor is as always hiliarious. The script is very well written. At times emphasizing comedy, drama, triumph, tragedy and most importantly sufficiently representing the atmosphere and culture of much of black america at that time. But it's the performances of Billy Dee and James Earl that really raise the film from just fine storytelling to the level of social commentary and criticsm.
You'll laugh, strut, rage, and ultimately cry at this beautiful film.

Description
It's a quaint turn-of-the-century small town of shady streets, swimming holes and the Sunday afternoon clip-clop of horse and buggy. But that peaceful exterior conceals human lives twisted by cruelty, murder and madness. Kings Row is one of Warner Bros.' most distinguished productions, highlighted by an outstanding cast, haunting James Wong Howe cinematography and a somber, emotion-laden Erich Wolfgang Korngold score. Ann Sheridan, Robert Cummings, Betty Field, Claude Rains and Charles Coburn give indelible performances ? and Ronald Reagan's portrayal of Drake, a cheerful ne'er-do-well shattered by tragedy, has been hailed as his career best. Nominated for 3 Academy Awards? including Best Picture,* Kings Row is a powerful American saga of dreams, despair and triumph.
Customer Reviews:
Kings Row.......2007-06-25
Rediscover the lost art of melodrama with Sam Wood's peerless "Kings Row". The film's strength lies in its subtle transformation from wholesome Americana into a dark tale of madness and evil, transcending any sentimental, dated attributes. Unquestionably, our 40th President did his finest screen work here, and Cummings fits the stolid, noble Parris to a tee. This combined with Sheridan's star-wattage and a top-notch Warners supporting cast (including Claude Rains, Judith Anderson, and Charles Coburn) makes Kings Row a town well worth visiting.
The score is GREAT.......2006-11-17
This has long been one of my favorite films, so it is gratifying to see so many others also appreciate it.
However, to Ryuichi, I must really object to the characterization of this great score as banal. Such an opinion prompts one to wholly question whether you have any musical taste or judgement at all.
This is one of Korngold's best scores and that fact alone marks it as truly memorable.
Dark side of "Our Town".......2006-11-12
KING'S ROW has always been one of my favorite films; it seemed to mirror the small town of my grandparents that I visited as a child. A much lesser known American movie masterpiece (directed by Sam Wood) that was years before "Peyton Place". Less about bedroom conduct but a genuinely disturbing view of small town corruption, status quo. Ronald Reagon, who's very good in this film--maybe the best performance he ever gave--is the vulnerable victim of a small town authoritarian, a role he unfortunately outgrew. Anne Sheridan who probably never gave a bad performance, is mature, lovely and thoroughly believable, likeable. Robert Cummings as the young doctor is at his buoyant best. But it is Betty Field and Nancy Coleman who are heartbreaking; stifled by their fathers: Claude Rains and Charles Coburn respectively. Korngold's score is wonderful and the film that was probably shot on Hollywood lots has that quality of the periods it portrays and the time it was filmed (1942). The DVD was released in a set w/other Ronald Regan opuses. This is the one to own. This film is a true clasic of turn of the (20th) Century small town America that was subject of so many great writers from Sinclair Lewis to Thomas Wolfe and ever so many more, but this film is the one that comes to mind when referencing this 'gothic'small town persona. One could only have wished the DVD package contained liner notes. An original 'trailer'(of sorts) is included but no commentary or real quotes. A great movie.
Provocative Drama.......2006-09-03
"King's Row" is a daring film for it's day. It's basic premise is that the sins of the elders results in wrath upon their innocent offspring. What I admire about the Production code days is that they don't have to spell out explicitly the venality of the characters but they depend on the intuitive intelligence of the audience to know what's going on. Director Sam Wood paints a pessimistic picture of smalltown America but ultimately offers a message of hopefullness that doesn't feel hokey or contrived. The film is impeccably cast without a bad performance in the bunch. Most interest is in Ronald Reagan as the devil-may-care Drake and working with a top-notch cast seems to inspire Reagan to give one his best performances. A common misperception about Reagan was that he was a one-note actor while truth be told he was typecast by the studio bosses. To dispel this myth you should check out Reagan's performance as a heavy in Don Siegel's remake of "The Killers".
Unlisted Special Features.......2006-08-21
Well, not so much unlisted as incorretly described. The box and the DVD menu list a theatrical trailer for the film. In fact, there are 5 different, short, teaser trailers for the film featuring the film's 5 leading actors! So when you select "Theatrical Trailer" on the disc, all five play in sequence.
