3 out of 5 stars Entertaining But Short Also a Bit Propogandish.......2005-12-15

There is in no doubt that the martial artist in this DVD are spectacular. The children are incredible and I've never seen such great skill from kids so young. I've been doing shaolin kung fu for about 10 years now and I really enjoyed this. Just to see how people move in kung fu is great. This is wonderful for martial artists or people who are just amazed about how much one can push the human body.

The downside of this DVD is that its short and it doesn't display enough moves or show entire forms. It doesn't go into enough depth as I've seen other documentaries. Its merely 50 minutes. Also there seemed to be some propoganda in this documentary (it was commissioned by the Chinese Government) and for this reason it seemed a bit historically inaccurate. The Shaolin Temple has turned considerably more into a tourist site in the last 30 years when China realized it was an economical gold mine. This DVD seems like an advertisement to go to the Shaolin Temple and see whats all the hype about. Yet it does have many demos in it which I do certainly enjoy.

What is explained are:
-History
-The Life of a Shaolin Monk
-A small break down in the styles of Shaolin (Fighting styles, Animal Styles, Chi Kung, etc)
-Demonstrations

5 out of 5 stars A Great Look Inside The Shaolin Temple!.......2005-10-15

Suitable for viewing by beginners and advanced martial artists alike. The producers definitely got a look inside the temple and the training that goes on there -- a look that is rarely given to outsiders. While this well-produced documentary gives a brief and skimpy outline of the history of Shaolin & martial arts in China, what it does best is show what the current state of training is like at the temple. Typically, boys enter the temple training at age 4 or 5 and within 5 years of training (at the most flexible, adaptable age) are already incredibly skilled. Also clear is the Chinese professional sports approach -- also adopted in their olympic and other sports programs -- of starting with thousands of applicants and winnowing it down to the best performers. From this DVD you get a good look at basic training, and could even try to learn some of the basic forms (which are presented VERY quickly) of Shaolin, which are difficult to find from authentic sources elsewhere. Fun to watch, well done, and a good martial arts documentary.

4 out of 5 stars Great Documentary on Shaolin.......2004-08-25

One of the best documentaries I have seen on the shaolin temple and the shaolin life style. This documentary touches on the art of kung fu as well as chi gung and chi. Great DVD.
