This DVD contains four episodes previously released on two VHS tapes, plus the never-released prime time special "100th Anniversary Episode."

Meet Joe!
Steve's younger, and much taller brother is introduced in this pair of episodes, preparing the kids for Joe's eventual taking over of the franchise as Steve heads off to college. (And star-coproducer Steven Burns leaves the blue screen behind for the bright lights of Hollywood.) In "Joe's First Day," Steve follows the clues to find out what Joe (Donovan Patton) will bring for show-and-tell. In "Joe Gets a Clue," the passing of the baton begins as Joe learns the significance of a blue paw print, goes on his first skidoo, and is presented with his very own handy-dandy notebook by Blue. Much is made of the fact that the new notebook is shaped like the thinking chair; look for one in a store near you. Will the kids like Joe as much as their old buddy Steve? Well, Joe's got a different green shirt and more hair, but the same infectious enthusiasm. --Kimberly Heinrichs

It's Joe Time!
After hosting nearly 100 episodes of Blue's Clues, Steve is off to college. That means it's Joe time! Steve's affable younger brother Joe prepares to carry the torch--and the handy dandy notebook--that Clue Master Steve so skillfully carried for years. In episode one, Blue leads Joe on a merry chase to determine what she wants Steve to pack for college. Skidooing to an artfully drawn campus, choosing school subjects, and saying goodbye to a dear friend may well raise more questions and emotions than typical episodes. To their credit, Blue and friends bid a cheerful, tearless farewell and adjust perfectly to smilin' Joe. By the second episode, the new host and his entourage create their own "Big Book About Us," discussing favorite colors, shapes, animals, and more. As always, interaction with the 1- to 5-year-old audience coupled with simple, joyfully presented lessons make for 50 minutes of pure educational pleasure. --Liane Thomas

This is the DVD that explains the transition to Joe from Steve. It's terrific. My son has wtached this a hundred times and still isn't tired of it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Purchase!.......2006-11-10

This DVD is one of my favorite's of Blue Clues for my son. If lets you know how Joe came into the picture & why Steve left. Wonderful DVD!

5 out of 5 stars Mystery Solved.......2006-08-05

My son, 2 years old, loves watching Blue's Clues, but he was confused if "Steve" wasn't the host, since the first few BC videos he saw featured "Steve". Now, after watching "Get to Know Joe", he no longer questions "where's Steve?". He says, "Steve's at college." And if he watches an older Blue's Clues, he tells us that "Joe will come see "Steve" soon.". Who knew it would even be an issue if it was "Steve or Joe", but it most certainly was. Now, it's not. The mystery is no longer. Plus, my son enjoys it. A worth it buy, in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Great transition movies.......2006-03-10

My daughter liked these because they transitioned from Steve to Joe really well. She wasnt too upset when Steve left!

5 out of 5 stars Wow, really excellent!.......2006-03-01

My kids really love Blue's Clues, but often had trouble with the fact that sometimes it was Joe, and sometimes it was Steve. We bought this video because it includes those transition episodes. They just love it! It has really helped them enjoy the show, and deal with teh changing of peoplein their lives here, especially therapists. The episodes themselves and the clue games are also particularly nice ones.

One of the most subtle and deeply felt--if ultimately downbeat--collaborations between Jack Nicholson and director Bob Rafelson, this film was Rafelson's follow-up to Five Easy Pieces. Nicholson plays a disc jockey whose withdrawn personality translates to radio mystery. But he's out of his depth when he goes home to Atlantic City at the invitation of ne'er-do-well brother Bruce Dern. Dern has a big-money scam that's also high risk, particularly to himself if the black-crime syndicate he's ripping off ever gets wind of it. But Nicholson gets swept up in the blarney of his charismatic older brother, even as he suffers gnawing doubts about the way Big Bro treats his lady friends (including Ellen Burstyn). Low-key but evocative, this is the kind of movie that has you remembering images and moments and feeling for Nicholson's dilemma, long after you've seen it. --Marshall Fine

A over looked classic, all the cast act their socks off. Nicholson particularly is understated and so more effective. Failed dreams portrayed in a most moving fashion.

Against the struggled reality: evasive dreams!
Two brothers share a same dream; to live in an island paradise where they will both kings once they have retired; one of them is a bewildered man product of the inscrutable fate, the other the great swagger, the unexhausted dream machine who certainly swears he is a small entrepreneur. The long late night radio monologue is the standout of the film.

4 out of 5 stars Great Film. Dern Rocks........2005-05-04

This movie has one the best performances by Jack Nicholson and proves that acting is more about being true to life than acting like you want to be noticed; that along with Bruce Dern's outstanding performance, playing Nicholson's brother, is what makes this film tick.
Yes, it is not a fast movie.
But the outstanding cinematography of of Laslo Kovaks working off the assured direction of Bob Rafelson makes this movie a gem.
I've never seen a movie that accurately portrays the dementia of the lower end of the middle class so well, as it does so without making them drunks or drug addicts which most people need to see, to understand how delusional these people are.
What a film.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Character Study From the 70's.......2005-02-15

"The King of Marvin Gardens" is an example of why the seventies was such a golden period in American filmmaking in that studios as well as stars would take a chance on offbeat material regardless of it's box office potential. Director Bob Rafelson creates a haunting story of disparate souls who cling to hopes that are as faded as the Atlantic City facade they inhabit. Jack Nicholson effectively plays against type as a radio personality who joins up with his brother(Bruce Dern) to partake in his latest get-rich-quick scheme that has all the earmarks of going up in flames. They are joined by Ellen Burstyn as a faded beauty queen who's along for the ride in the futile hope of attaining a dream. This film is not easy to watch at times but the more ambitious viewer can appreciate filmmaking that dares to challenge it's audience. Gorgeous cinematography of the Atlantic City landscape before the casinos were erected.

2 out of 5 stars What was the point?.......2004-08-07

I remember seeing this film as a kid and thinking to myself, maybe when I'm older I'll understand the signifigance of this movie. But 29 years later I'm even more confused as to why this film was made.

"King of Marvin Gardens" took me a record-breaking four sittings to watch because I kept falling asleep. Don't get me wrong. I appreciate a thoughtful, well-written, well-acted human interest story--but where was the human interest in this flick?? Why am I supposed to be interested in these characters?? Interesting characters don't have to be nice and heroic, but they certainly have to be compelling!

I think after the tremendous success of "Five Easy Pieces" (deservedly so), that genre of anti-story must have been all the vogue in cinema during the mid-1970s. With the exception of the last 10 minutes you have an absolutely flatliner of a film here. Movies of that period, like "Fat City" and "Scarecrow" do a much more effective job of conveying the dire banality of real life.

Although the packaging and presentation for the "King of Marvin Garden" DVD was flawless.

Fresh from the playfully exuberant A Hard Day's Night (1964), director Richard Lester applies the same acrobatic, tongue-in-cheek style to this delightfully frivolous take on swinging London and the sexual revolution. Gawky young Michael Crawford is a meek landlord who vies with his ladies-man lodger Ray Brooks for the attentions of spirited funny-face Rita Tushingham, whom he literally picks up while pushing his new brass bed through the streets of London. Lester floats his sweet nothing of a goofy romance with an offbeat sense of humor, a compendium of sight gags and non sequiturs stirred in with devil-may-care spirit, and a pair of winning leads. Crawford's underdog desperation and endearing naiveté makes for an appealingly nerdish hero, but it's Tushingham's kooky charm and deft comic delivery that steal the film. A lovely score by John Barry balances the energy and invention with a tender romanticism. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars Not Bad For What It Is!.......2006-04-30

This movie has ranked number 5 in my top ten favorite movie list! I really enjoy watching it! It nothing like "A Hard Day's Night" or "How I Won the War", but I think it special for what it is! I also enjoyed watching Michael Crawford ("Hello Dolly"/Original Phantom of the Opera) who has ranked number 3 on my top favorite actors list! This movie really is a joy to watch! I odd to know...I'v seen it!

3 out of 5 stars Most of the fizz is flat.......2005-07-25

Forty years on the once scintillating British comedies of Richard Lester have lost a lot of their fizz. Even "A Hard Day's Night," though buoyed by the Beatles and their tunes, seems a little tired and old-fashioned. "The Knack," which Lester did a few years later, uses the same tricks: madcap antics, irreverent humor, verbal nonsense (that somewhat foreshadows Monty Python), quick-cut editing, cute locations and such. Though based on a play, the film is long on style and attitude and short on plot. Nerd (Michael Crawford) envies a stud (Ray Brooks) with a "knack" with the ladies. Along comes Nancy (Rita Tushingham), a sort of everywoman, and the tussle for her begins. Oh, and there's daft painter about, a sort of revisitation of Gulley Jimpson, adding to the chaos. The picture captures the mood of mod '60s London pretty well, and David Watkin's black and white photography and Lester's visuals are striking. And to top it off, there's John Barry's rather famous score for organ and jazz orchestra, probably one of his best. Most of the fizz that's left is there.

2 out of 5 stars The score is very good.......2005-05-08

This movie is of its time and has not aged well. It's a not very vivid portrayal of the swinging sixties in London, with four uninvolving characters spewing bizarre non-sequiturs at one another. Watch it with the subtitles off and you'll think it doesn't make sense; watch it with the subtitles on and you'll realize it's not supposed to make sense. In neither case is it at all funny. The film also betrays its origins as a play; despite the best efforts of the director to open it up - he spends about five wordless minutes showing three of the characters rolling a brass bed through London - it feels stagebound.

What's good about it is the John Barry score. The first dreamlike scene in which the music spirals around and around a bevy of beautiful girls is worth seeing. I also enjoyed the random comments of the disapproving older English observing the wacky doings of the the "mods" and the "rockers," though only one of the characters is a mod; none are rockers. Most importantly, none are interesting.

Avoid the movie; buy the soundtrack. If you want a vivid movie portrayal of London in the 1960's watch Michael Caine's "Alfie".

3 out of 5 stars Lest we forget..........2005-04-01

... just what it really was like in "The Swinging Sixties" watch this DVD and remember... what? How much fun it was to do really whacky things just for the sake of it. How boring, bigoted and irrelevant the older generation were. How vacuously pretty all the dolly birds looked. How they were simply there as male objects of desire. How chatting them up and getting them into bed as quickly as possible was what relationships were all about. How sexual promiscuity was revered. How rape was actually a bit of a "joke". How snappy cinema-photography, a cool soundtrack and rapid-fire, meaningless dialogue could make a film really "good". And... how dull and pointless all of this could be.

Like a bad dream "The Knack" brings these memories flooding back and makes you really glad that you aren't there anymore. And the scary thing about it all is that it really was like that, so much so that the film, the truly awful world it portrays and the pathetic, soul-less people who populate it were seen, at the time, not as some kind of dark satire (which it wasn't intended to be) but as part of a highly successful, cheekily "hip" comic romp. Hey, you too can hitch-up with some really nutty guys, paint your flat white, get a bigger bed, and then have sex with as many innocent girls as possible. No responsibilities, no emotions, no worries... just lots of fun. Really?

Forty years on the only redeeming features it can lay claim to are the wholly unintentional - the people & situations it portrays are now so alien and even unacceptable (particularly its bizarre and disturbing treatment of "rape for laughs") that it actually holds your attention in a perverse, gob-smackingly "can this really have been considered an important film" kind of way, its numerous shots of London and its streets, shop-fronts, thick winter coats & cars make it an intriguing "timepiece", and... it's the perfect antidote to all the hype & nostalgia about England in the sixties that the passage of time has enshrined. Essential viewing, but for all the wrong reasons.

3 out of 5 stars A Sixties "Arty-Fact".......2005-02-01

Forty years after its release, it's hard to imagine how new and fresh this film was. Borrowing heavily from the French New Wave in terms of look and feel, the film and its inseperable and sublime John Barry soundtrack are a fascinating snapshot of the so-called swinging sixties in London.

Whilst The Knack has some stunning elements all captured beautifully on the otherwise feature free DVD - the stark black and white photography, the white on white decor of the downstairs flat and the views of London (somehow familiar yet quite alien) the film is not what it was.

Perhaps it's original uniqueness has been copied or pastiched so many times that the film is now a cliche. Scenes of 'wacky' youth leaping around in the street is a bit cringe inducing, while the scenes where Tolen tries to enamour himself of Nancy and the "Rape" last act are downright disturbing.

For fans of the movie's director Dick Lester the Knack is closer to A Hard Day's Night than Help and like those films it has a cool soundtrack.

It's a shame that the DVD didn't have a bit more to offer - there isn't even a trailer - something the soundtrack included when issued as an enhanced CD

Ultimately The Knack is essential viewing for those interested in Sixties London and how young some of the actors look - (check out early performances from Jacqueline Bisset and one time John Barry squeeze Jane Birkin).

If you like the twisted, amoral characters that inhabit the world of pulp novelist Jim Thompson, you're going to love After Dark, My Sweet, one of the most faithful of many Thompson adaptations. Protagonist Kevin "Kid" Collins (Jason Patric), called "Collie" by those attracted to his shaggy dog side, escapes from a mental hospital and shuffles into a lonely desert town (and Patric really has the gait of a former pugilist down). Enter widow Fay Anderson (Rachel Ward), with legs that could stop a truck and a half-baked scheme to kidnap the scion of a rich family, which she's dreamed up with her unctuous and untrustworthy Uncle Bud (Bruce Dern), and it's the beginning of the end for the likable Kid.

After Dark, My Sweet is a film about judging people. No one is who they seem. Only by guessing their true intentions can Collins have a chance to survive. The film also has brilliant performances by the three leads, especially Dern, whose Uncle Bud is delightfully unhinged. Director James Foley (Glengarry Glen Ross, The Corruptor) is subtly adept at fleshing out the characters and their ambiguities, which solves the problem inherent in adapting Thompson's sleazy tales--namely, that much of the drama is internal, and therefore unfilmable). --Wayne Karrfalt

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A great little film noir.......2007-02-20

Film noir focuses on desperate people doing desperate things. And that is exactly what this movie entails.
Others have gone over the plot here so I will not do that. I will say that all actors did exceedingly well in what can be very difficult roles to play. They all acted off each other in a believable manner.
Bruce Dern was never seedier than he is with this character. Jason Patric and Rachel Ward also excel at thier characters.
What is decieving here is the setting....somewhere in the southwest, desert area. Film noir is typically dark and shadowy but here there is lots of sunlight. It takes the focus off the setting and puts it on the plot, which I found to be an interesting twist and quite effective.
In the heat, the emotions bubble over. Lust, greed, deception, lies, mistrust and paranoia all play out in layer upon layer and is accented by Jason Patric's character very effectively.
For those who like film noir with a twist you will certainly like this little known gem. It is immediately captivating and magnetic. I don't know how I missed it on it's original release but certainly glad I caught up to it. Take a chance folks... you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Jim Thompson on film--and punchy!.......2006-09-15

Very nice piece of work with strong casting. How can you do better than have Bruce Dern play an ex-cop sleazeball? Or Rachel Ward as a dangerous femme fatale? Or Jason Patric as a semi-addled former boxer with smoldering sexuality?

Answer: you CAN'T. Yep, we're in Jim Thompson land--aka Desperation City, and each one of these three characters has some kind of desperation going on, as do just about all of Thompson's characters. This is neo-noir at its best; you reduce the story down to fundamental elements and have James Foley directing--a rock solid director--and you got yourself one humdinger of a flick.

So yeah, there's sex and violence and yeah, they both come out of Desperation. Oh yeah. The flashbacks of Patric (as Kevin Collins), a former boxer, when he was in the ring, add just the right element for cementing the story and its Thompsonesque flavor. So there's a planned heist and stuff, but the formula isn't important. What's important is the atmosphere, the acting, the emotional punch on display. And it's definitely here.

Great piece of work. Go for it.

4 out of 5 stars An Underrated, Relatively-Unknown Noir.......2006-04-26

Intense actors like Bruce Dern, Jason Patrick and Rachel Ward combine to make this modern-day film noir a winner. Of the three, I don't know who was most interesting as all offer good performances and intriguing characters.

Patric does the narration in this noir, playing an ex-boxer and mental patient. Wow, that alone makes for an interesting guy! He looks dumb, but he isn't. Ward is the slinky, attractive, cynical, intelligent and compassionate co- conspirator of a kidnapping plan that goes bad. Bruce Dern also is in the mix and Dern never fails to fascinate in about any film.

The movie could be considered kind of downer to the average viewer, but I found it fascinating....and I don't like depressing movies normally. What I found was a kind of quirky crime film. Take a look and see if you agree. This is pretty unknown film that shouldn't have that status because it's simply a good story and well-done.

4 out of 5 stars Newer film noir entry.......2006-04-13

A dark, twisted thriller about an ex-prizefighter, lately escaped from a mental hospital, who gets mixed up in a kidnapping scheme that goes awry. The fighter, played very well by Jason Patric, is brighter and more human than the two he gets mixed up with - Bruce Dern and a miscast Rachel Ward. Patric falls desperately and hopelessly in love with Ward. In fact, everything in the movie, which is based on a Jim Thompson crime novel, appears desperate and hopeless - the characters, the situation, even the outcome. Patric sacrifices his life so Ward can escape punishment for the kidnapping, a noble jesture for sure, but a strain on credulity. Another somewhat unrealistic aspect is the behavior of the kidnapped boy, who is virtually mute and unresponsive the whole time. But the story is an interesting one, and Patric, with his quiet, slow-thinking voice holds our attention.

5 out of 5 stars trust 'ol uncle bud...and see what happens........2005-12-05

This is a great adaptation of my favorite Jim Thompson novel.

Jason Patric is excellent; he projects the raw physicality of a young Brando with just the right amount of modern psychotic edge. Rachel Ward is certainly beautiful enough to inspire many a man to do something dangerous and/or stupid( the sound of her husky voice alone would bring me to my knees!) Bruce Dern, after too many yrs in semi-retirement, acts with such sleazy charm that i almost wished it were the 1970's again and he were in his full-on psycho mode.

This has to be the brightest noir ever filmed and the washed out desert locations help tremendously when it comes to building an alternative atmosphere to the old school "city noirs".

Of all the adaptations of Jim Thompsons work so far, this one is my favorite.

It's a pretty good movie, but what happened with the dog at the end made absolutely no sense. How did the producer guy know the dog was in the asylum is the main question, it's just not explained at all. The main plot of the movie was good, but it's just jerky to introduce a subplot, get the viewer invested in where it's going, and then offer no comprehensible conclusion.

2 out of 5 stars Weak and Unfunny Romantic Comedy Starring Gallo and Cox .......2004-08-23

A little-seen film starring Vincent Gallo and Courteney Cox, directed by Justin McCarthy (brother of actor Andrew of 'Less Than Zero'), released from marverick indie company Lions Gate, which also released quite impressive 'Bufallo 66' directed Gallo.

But this film is a disappointment. I like Gallo, and watched almost all of his films (including notorious 'Brown Bunny'), but 'Get Well Soon' suffers from too many things.

First, this is about the popular midnight TV personality Bobby, played by Vincent Gallo. Sorry, but I don't believe it. Gallo looks never the kind of the character he plays here, because Gallo's talent (as musician, film director, whatever you pick) is not to be found in mainstream media like TV. He is not Letterman or Leno, and that's his strength, isn't it?

And Bobby comes back to his town, where his ex-girlfriend Lilly lives, and Bobby tried to make up for the past wrongs done to her, with a help from her brother who is now in a mental institute. This quirky romantic comedy follows the process of love between them, with some episodes about the immates of the instutite, who tries to steal a dog of Matthew Broderick (who does NOT appear).

Lilly is played by Courteney Cox, whom I love to see in any films, but somehow she lacks the charms she showed in other films of his. The biggest problem is still Gallo, whose dangerous charisma was sensational in '66' or 'Palookaville,' but not here, only looking like sleepwalking. Sorry his fans, but he is totally miscast.

Perhaps more damaging is the director's poor direction. The characters are annoyingly unfunny, trying to be funny, and the jokes are as fresh as last years's news, recycling those jokes about gays or mental institute. For die-hard Gallo fans only; others, skip it.

4 out of 5 stars courtney cox and vincent gallo? in love?.......2003-05-21

Quite a strange take on the hopeless romantic comedy, especially considering Courtney Cox is the female lead. But instead of the tasteless and mindless tripe you would expect from such an actress, this is intelligent, dark and a little rough around the edges. OK, it's hard to believe that Courtney Cox would ever fall in love with Vincent Gallo (especially his character here). He's an unkempt, bitter, psychotic, uncontrollable TV host (he blatantly asks a supermodel about her [love] life on television), not a character you would find roaming around the Friend's set. I could just imagine the harassment he would receive from Joey, Chandler, Ross, Rachel and especially Monica (I think he and Phoebe would get along just fine), let alone if one of the Friends tried dating him. Gallo was a bit overdramatic at times, which isn't all that unusual for him, and considering he is always present on the screen (both as an actor and soundtrack composer) it becomes distracting. The other characters make up for this, especially Courtney Cox, whom I have gained a lot of respect for after Get Well Soon. And I always enjoy Elina Lowensohn (Nadja) who plays Courtney Cox's best friend.

5 out of 5 stars BRUCE.......2006-03-22

I knew of Vilanch as a comedy writer, but I had no idea all this guy was into and how much respect he has in the industry. Parts of this DVD are laugh out loud hilarious and frankly Robin Williams has NEVER been funnier and that really is saying something, his bit is totally extemporaneous and it is classic Robin Williams, it alone is worth the price of this DVD, but it really is Vilanch that shines here, he is so likeable and you can tell he loves what he does and frankly you really can't blame him.

4 out of 5 stars A glimpse into the life of a great comedy writer.......2004-01-22

Millions of people know of Bruce Villanche from his appearances on the "Hollywood Squares" with his bushy hair, glasses, and T-shirt collection. America has been laughing at his work for many years, though. He's written everything from TV shows (the Academy Awards and "The Brady Bunch Variety Hou,r" just to name a few) to the speeches and jokes for today's hottest stars, including Bette Midler, Whoppi Goldberg and Billy Crystal. This documentary takes you into his world, showing you his creative process in snippets of his own stand-up, interviews with some of his clients, and scenes from TV shows and ceremonies.

The DVD has no extras, but it's still a great film showcasing one of the funniest men in America.

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of Bruce Vilanch.......2002-12-01

Words cannot express the ways in which this great man has helped to mold me into the person I am today. He has helped me not only accept who I am but also how I live my life. Get Bruce! is an instant classic in my book. In the film the Master Vilanch shows not only his comical side, but also his androgynous personality. I am 110% positive he has had the same impact on all who have the pleasure of experiencing the Master at his finest. Bravo Bruce!!! I await the start of production of Get Bruce II. Like a fine wine this movie continues to get better with age. Pick up a copy and experience the MASTERFUL Vilanch for yourself. Take it form me the #1 fan: you wont be disapointed.

4 out of 5 stars Great peek at the man behind the jokes.......2001-01-16

Though he's now fairly widely known through his appearances on the New Hollywood Squares, Bruce Vilanche's work has been heard (and laughed at) by millions of people worldwide. As a joke writer for artists (Bette, Whoopi, Billy, Robin), events (Academy Awards), and in his earlier days, TV (Brady Bunch Variety Show, Donny & Marie), Vilanche is one of a few select go-to guys in Hollywood.

The documentary mixes interviews with his clients, footage of his featured work, snippets of Vilanche himself speaking at awards ceremoies (he won an Emmy for his Oscar work) and rare performances, and, most interestingly, some work sessions. The last is the most interesting, as it provides some insight as to how Vilanche goes about creating his jokes. His description of writing for different individuals - creating jokes and then voicing them appropriately, is fascinating. The peek into the working process of different comedians (Midler, Crystal, Williams) is revealing both of Vilanche and his clients.

What really makes this film work is that Vilanche is as interesting as the stars he writes for - something that cannot be said of all comedy writers.

4 out of 5 stars A good flick.......2000-07-18

It's good, but not worth 100 bucks. While it is a very well done documentary- that's what it is, a documentary. It is not a hilarious comedy. It merely documents how certain stars met Bruce and how he develops his creative ideas for comedy. Rent it before you buy it. Be sure you know what you are paying for.

Description

The get-rich-quick-scheme of a sexy widow and a con man needs a perfect pawn to set it in motion. Their choice has a few skeletons in his closet, however, and he gets involved only to be close to the seductress. If he finds out she's manipulating him, the stakes could turn deadly. Jason Patric, Rachel Ward, Bruce Dern

5 out of 5 stars Moody, Beautiful, Trancelike.......2007-06-14

I just saw this movie yesterday at the Film Forum in New York. Everything that everyone's said about it is true. It is a gorgeous film. One of the most beautiful i've seen in years. Definitely need to get this on DVD soon!!

5 out of 5 stars The Keith Richards of Jazz.......2006-08-01

In his younger years, Chet Baker was quite a good-looking man. In his final days however, he began to physically resemble Johnny Paycheck in the middle of a week-long bender. But the recordings ... the recordings! Fans will want to see this, and hopefully add it to their collections. And in the end, the music is all that matters. Until a better documentary is made, this intimate portrait - warts and all - remains a standout piece of filmmaking ... and probably won't be surpassed.

Silly that this documentary has not been put out on DVD. I have a VHS copy of this that I found at a thrift store. It is an amazing one, both content-wise and compositionally. Hurry up and release this on DVD... Thanks...

5 out of 5 stars Why is this not out on DVD yet?.......2006-01-19

This is a great film, recapping the life (near it's end at the time the film was made) of trumpet great Chet Baker. If you are reading this you probably know the basics - rapid rise to jazz stardom in the early fifties, natural talent (self taught, did not read music) records landmark versions of "You Don't Know What Love Is," "The Thrill Is Gone" and "My Funny Valentine" (to name a few), develops a truly unique, somewhat androgenous vocal style (haunting does not do it justice) and then descends into a lifelong drug addiction (outliving virtually all of his cohorts who traveled the same road) which, over time, only adds to the legend. He never kicked dope and was fairly unapologetic about it. Moved all over the place in Europe(where he became something akin to a God in jazz fan circles - especially in Italy). In and out of jail - you name it, he did it. Of course, he had all the traits of a junkie - manipulative, selfish, focused on his habit to the exclusion of almost everything else....almost. He continued making great music, to one extent or other, up until the day he fell to his death from a hotel window. This film catches up with him near the end and contains great interviews with Baker himself, many of his former cronies, friends, lovers. It's shot in beautiful black and white and is really a stunning, unusual bio-pic of an amazingly interesting (but more to the point - talented) guy. Look close and you will see young Chris Isaak and Flea, from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Why this is not on DVD is beyond me. If you are interested enough in this subject to be reading this, go to ebay - occassionally it is available there on video.
There is a great book about Baker, titled Deep In A Dream (James Gavin).

5 out of 5 stars A Hauntingly Beautiful and Sad Look at Chet.......2005-08-12

I saw this wonderful film in an art house theater in Austin, Texas over ten years ago and have never forgotten it. Chet Baker is unique and enchanting even when seen in his self-destructive ruin. Why the hell is this not on DVD?
