Titanic deserves better than this.......2006-02-02
Thankfully, I managed to buy this in a set, along with the other 4 DVDs, but if the other DVDs are anything like this, it'll be on sale pretty fast. It was only 55 minutes long, but I gave up half way through. It got interesting when we saw some of the actual survivors of the Titanic - including one lady who was conceived on the Titanic. What a claim to fame. But the sound was badly transferred over from video to DVD, and no matter how much it's turned up, it's not good, and barely audible. The Titanic deserves to be remembered in better ways than this, a by-numbers DVD. I hope the rest are better.
So boring it makes you want to forget the Titanic.......2003-04-06
All five videos in the Titanic: The Mystery and the Legacy series suffer from a common affliction: they somehow seem to avoid telling the story of that dramatic night in the mid-Atlantic and end up degenerating into insufferably boring presentations. Titanic Remembered is particularly hard to sit through. Things start out all right; we hear some really meaningful tales of the sinking from a couple of elderly survivors; then, we start hearing some interesting stories from relatives and descendants of those who sailed on the Titanic; eventually, we start hearing from people who have no personal connection to the drama at all. The majority of this video covers modern-day Titanic conventions and memorial services. A whole crowd of people pile onto a small boat, and we are forced to tag along on the dullest scenic tour ever conceived, a jaunt around the dockyards from which the Titanic sailed. There is nothing at all interesting about this. Working our way inland, we are shown several memorials erected in memory of the Titanic's crew and passengers, but what might be interesting for a couple of minutes becomes extremely tiresome as it drags on interminably. To make the whole experience completely galling, things conclude with us being shown a number of objects that did not come from the Titanic at all but perhaps were very similar to what might have been found there. I can't get excited over an extended discussion over a tea kettle that admittedly has no link to the Titanic at all. I found myself wanting to scream as this video became completely irrelevant halfway through yet continued to drag on and on and on. Titanic Remembered is enough to make you want to forget about the Titanic altogether.

Interesting but can become tedious for non-fanatics.......2003-04-06
This video, the first of five in the Titanic: The Mystery & The Legacy series, is for those interested in the complete story of the Titanic as it has evolved throughout the years since the disaster; those interested only in the dramatic sinking itself may find themselves bored in significant stretches of this presentation. One must also contend with a somewhat mediocre sound quality, which makes it close to impossible to catch every single word being uttered, especially from those speaking with a strong accent. The story featured here really starts in the aftermath of the sinking itself, as it chronicles some of the stories, books, and movies (not including the James Cameron mega-movie that was to come a year after this Titanic series was produced) that have appeared over the years based on the Titanic drama. There are a couple of interviews with elderly survivors of the disaster; in one case, though, the witness goes on and on about her life after the Titanic without saying much about the horrifying experience itself. Significant bits of vintage newsreels are shown, including shots of Captain Smith inspecting a ship that is passed off as the Titanic but is actually the Olympic (the footage having been shot a year before the Titanic set sail); there are also lingering shots of the captain and crew of the rescue ship Carpathia, but this footage consists mainly of young stewards hamming it up in front of the camera. We are shown a number of newspaper headlines and stories dating back to the days and weeks after the disaster, and the difference between initial American and British reports is quite striking. From here, we move on to accounts of some of the films based on the disaster. I was quite surprised to learn that one such film was made only months after the disaster and starred an actual survivor wearing the clothes she wore on the fateful night itself; sadly, no print of this early French production now exists. A German film was made shortly thereafter, but the video devotes much more of its attention to two movies from 1929, filmed in both an English and a German version, with some pretty extraordinary shots of the panic-stricken passengers trying to save themselves. Most of the attention and praise is devoted to Walter Lords' magnificent book A Night to Remember and the extraordinary movie that was based on his account of events. This look at the legacy of the Titanic disaster in print and film can become somewhat tedious at times, so those without a significant passion for all things Titanic may do well to pass this video by.
great edutainment.......2000-06-27
This was very informative and entertaining. I learned a lot about icebergs, ships, and the historical event of the titanic sinking.
The content is great, the sound quality is lousy........1999-08-04
The content of this DVD video is great. There are actual interivews with survivors from the Titanic as well as summaries of newspaper articles that reported the disaster shortly after it happened. There is even a summary of those that testified at the trial that detail the last hours of the tragic sea voyage.
All this is undermined though by the fact that the sound quality of this DVD is in most part non existent. This impairs greatly our ability to listen to what could be a top notch oral adventure of what really happened to the ship that night and the world's reaction to it.
I was not able to watch the entire DVD because the sound quality was so bad.
I love boat story.......1999-03-22
I see the film and it's a very nice production

mediocre documentary.......2005-09-01
The worst parts are 1) the sound, often the words are unintelligible and the noise in background unbearable 2)the frequent repetitions of scenes across the 5 DVDs.
Often boring. The interviews of survivors are endless.
I couldn't watch more than two out of five.
Other documentaries on the topic are much better than this.
Disappointing, repetitive, and oftentimes boring.......2003-04-14
Three of the five volumes in this collection are fairly good in and of themselves, one is nothing more special than acceptable, and one is quite abysmal. The problems evident in the individual volumes are multiplied several fold when you consider all five together. There is a great deal of repetition among these presentations, not only of facts and descriptions but also of interviews with "experts" and survivors of the disaster. Too often the viewer is detoured into an interminable look at modern-day remembrances and memorial commemorations of the tragedy, forced to look at objects that may have been sort of like what might have been found on the Titanic-maybe, and taken on some very boring tours of essentially unimportant locations of statues and monuments. For the most part, the sound quality of these presentations is rather poor, which only makes a bad thing worse. You will get a number of the facts from this collection, but you are forced to pick up your knowledge here and there from each volume in turn. If you want a chronological, serious examination of the Titanic's maiden voyage to disaster, you would do well to look elsewhere. There are several one-volume documentaries that do a much better job of presenting the facts, theories, and legends of the unsinkable ship that sunk. This collection also does not have a whole lot to offer in terms of modern video footage of the ship as she lies at the bottom of the ocean. To get to the heart of the matter, this five-volume collection is really pretty disappointing when viewed as a whole and, in my opinion, is not the worth buying, although you might pick up one of the individual volumes such as the final entry, The End of an Era, and get a little satisfaction out of it.
Revisionist history?.......2000-01-01
OK, here's a short quiz: The Titanic sank during what year? A. 1915. B. 1914 C. 1912. If you watched the first volume of Mandacy's Titanic: The Mystery and the Legacy, you were informed that the correct answer is B, 1914. From there, it's all downhill. The sound booms out of your speakers no matter how low you set it, and the opening title card "Echoes of Titanic" looks like someone scrawled it on a piece of cardboard and held it up to the camera. Oh, and just for the record, it sank in 1912.
The most incredible piece of work -Cameron, move over........1999-09-04
THis is the most fascinating video on the Titanic ever put to dvd or video. Hawaiians may have a hard time swallowing the truth about this controversial topic.

A good overall look at the tragedy.......2003-04-14
This DVD, the fifth and final volume in the Titanic: The Mystery & the Legacy set, offers a final summary of the Titanic story, taking us from her launch at Southampton to her watery grave in the North Atlantic. Vintage photographs and sketches combined with actual video footage from the time are used to present the story of that fateful maiden voyage. This information is complemented by interviews with Walter Lord, author of the bestselling book A Night to Remember, and Walter McQuiddy, director of the famous film based on Lord's account, along with clips from the legendary film itself. In many ways, this video is a rehash of information and illustrations already presented in the preceding four volumes of the series. Repetitive it may be, but in terms of telling the story of the actual sinking, this volume offers more to the viewer than its companion offerings, all of which seem to inevitably devolve into uninteresting discussions of modern-day celebrations and memorials of the Titanic tragedy.

Not bad, but Captain Smith is almost an afterthought here.......2003-04-07
In this third DVD in the five-volume Titanic: The Mystery & the Legacy series, we are finally treated to at least some examination of the disaster itself as it unfolded. This is ironic given the fact that this volume is supposed to be about Captain Edward J. Smith. Early on, we do get a look at Captain Smith's life and career, journeying back to the street on which he was born in 1850, perusing some of the personal artifacts in the possession of Smith's descendants, and admiring an impressive monument to the ill-fated captain of Titanic. As the presentation proceeds, however, Captain Smith is almost forgotten as we examine some of the events of that fateful night in the mid-Atlantic. By far the most interesting segments feature the recollections of Eva Hart, an elderly well-spoken lady who was seven years old in 1912. Some of her recorded comments are featured on other DVDs in this 5-volume set (the redundancy of which can become tiresome) but overall she is an eloquent speaker with vivid memories of a night no other living survivor was old enough by this time to really recall with any certainty. Several stories of the most prominent men and women on board the vessel are told, and toward the end we finally return to the subject of the Captain again. The discussion is dominated by the debate concerning Smith's final words and deeds, giving us little insight into the man. At no time during this presentation, I might add, is blame for the disaster fastened on Captain Smith or anyone else. In the end, I found this volume of the series much more interesting than the earlier two (Echoes of Titanic and Titanic Remembered), but it is certainly not deserving of five stars.

Largely uninformative and filled with a lot of useless info.......2003-04-09
This Titanic documentary has its good points and its bad points. It begins rather badly, in my opinion. For some reason, the makers of the show feel compelled to explain the entire history of shipbuilding, going all the way back to the first prehistoric man who figured out a log would float on the water; a significant amount of time is spent talking to shipbuilders, showing us how a traditional builder is still constructing wooden vessels and taking us into the test labs of the U.S. Navy. Then, it's science lesson time as the scientific principle of buoyancy is explained to us (complete with silly cartoon animation of a naked Archimedes jumping out of his bathtub). Finally, we actually get to hear about the Titanic. After some talk about superstition and luck, we get a computer-animated tour of parts of the ship, after which the same computer animation recreates the ship hitting the iceberg and eventually going under. You won't find any reference to personal stories of victims or survivors, just the facts of the collision and catastrophe; the issue of blame is addressed, and a number of Titanic scholars weigh in with their opinions on the subject. Toward the very end, we finally get to see some video of the Titanic as it lies at the bottom of the ocean. I can say that the sound quality here is much better than that of the first three DVDs in this Titanic: The Mystery & and the Legacy series; unfortunately, in this case the visual display is quite bad at times, featuring such bright light that you can hardly see what is being shown. If you are a Titanic fan, you really won't learn anything you don't already know from this documentary, and you will have to sit through a truly frustrating first 15 minutes of interesting but rather immaterial information. There are much better Titanic documentaries available than this one.
Worst DVD I have purchased to date.......2000-02-14
I found this 50 minute documentary to be the worst that I have ever seen. There is actually a point on the DVD that there is an audio problem (no audio) for about 7 seconds. At least 10 minutes of it focuses on a shipbuilder that produces small boats today. Do not recommend!
