Released in conjunction with a two-disc deluxe edition of Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii, the three-disc deluxe edition of Elvis's '68 Comeback Special is another incredible treasure trove of footage documenting a high point of the King's career and a milestone of televised musical performances. Taped and broadcast in 1968 after Elvis had seemingly abandoned live performing in favor of a movie career, the '68 Comeback Special was a remarkably intimate show, Elvis singing his old songs on a small stage, often alone, surrounded on all sides by a rapt audience. The show's numbers fall into three general categories: the black leather stand-up shows, in which Elvis performs solo on stage; the black leather sit-down shows, in which Elvis jams with former bandmates Scotty Moore and D.J. Fontana and others; and big production numbers, often overdone and now looking as dated as any other 1960s variety show.

In addition to the complete, uncut TV special (with the bordello number that was deemed too daring for TV), this DVD set includes both of the original stand-up shows and both of the original sit-down shows (the first was released mostly complete as One Night with You), and multiple takes of numerous production numbers. The numerous glitches and stumbles of the production numbers have limited replay value, but the complete stand-up and sit-down sessions are like gold for those who couldn't get enough of them during the 73-minute television special. Decades after the original telecast, Elvis has made another comeback. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very, very good DVD collection, but outtakes are insanely boring........2007-06-08

Love it! I watch it over, and over again. The last DVD is a bunch of takes of the same scenes like 50 times each and I didn't like that disk though. I was just watching that one in the background while I read but it drove me insane so I had to turn it off. So, to summarize: First two disks are exceptional. Its even more amazing than you'll expect it to be. However, don't bother watching the last disk. Its no good. So, gauge your decision on whether you'd buy the regular or the deluxe edition by my review. I really like elvis and I could have done without the insanely monotonous outtakes. So if you have to pay alot more for deluxe, I would definitely recommend the regular version, not deluxe.

5 out of 5 stars Simply electrifying!.......2007-02-08

This is a truly remarkable DVD and essential viewing for all Elvis fans and anyone else for that matter, particularly those who have never considered themselves fans. Here the `King' shows why he was and continues to be a global phenomenon: the so-called `sit down' sequences are almost literally electrifying with Elvis reprising some of his early hits dressed in tight black leather and looking the very image of youthful health and vitality and made all the more poignant in the light of what happened less than ten years later. Although the energy of this performance manifests itself only a miniscule notch below the raw power of the earlier years he is here, arguably, at his best in terms of the quality of his singing and the sheer magnetism of his presence. His rendition of the last song, If Can Dream, is truly moving and demonstrates what an actor he could have been if he'd managed to escape from the Colonel's fetters: he makes you truly believe in what he's singing. The bonus is that you can watch each of a succession of takes that director, Steve Binder, obviously - but mysteriously - felt were necessary.

5 out of 5 stars What a special...What a DVD!!.......2007-01-10

This speacial was so much fun to watch that I actually enjoyed all of the extra footage. It shows what it takes to make a show as unforgettable as this. This is an Elvis fan must have and a music or entertainment fan should have.

3 out of 5 stars Good Overview of The King.......2007-04-17

(3 1/2 *'s) 'Elvis: King of Entertainment' is more of a documentary than it is a compilation of performances. It is an overview of the highlights of his life, his career, his performances, and his movies. As a sampler it works well. Interspersed with television performances and interviews, it is a testament to the phenomena that Elvis is and was. The only drawback is that the brief touches of each highlight will only be teasing and never really satisfying. Seeing footage of his army induction, his wedding, and early as well as Las Vegas performances are an interesting draw.

(Avoid by all means the companion video 'Elvis: Rare moments with the King,' which is published by the same company, is shorter, and repeats the highlights here. With almost no musical samples, the latter is almost more an archive of only sociological importance.)

5 out of 5 stars Incredible account of the Life of a King.......2007-03-29

This DVD is one of the most comprehensive documentaries of the King's history. It starts during the war years and documents the influence the local charismatic churches had on his life. A great deal of the video coverage is a first for Elvis fans. The account then continues on through his meteoric climb to fame, shows TV footage not seen before and continues on through his movie career to his return as a live entertainer enchanting the world. A tuely worthwhile account for all you Elvis fans out there.

2 out of 5 stars More doumentary and little substance.......2007-01-07

Not bad for a 'history of elvis' type program. Not much at all in the way of any performing. It moves slow and tends to lose you in the first 15 minutes or so. If you want to learn about how elvis got to be "Elvis" then this would be a good disc. If you are looking for simply his shows & songs, this is the wrong DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Elvis DVD-King of Entertainment.......2006-08-24

Arrived in good time. Looks great. Have not watched it since it is a Christmas gift. Trust all is well.

4 out of 5 stars great dvd for elvis fans.......2006-06-30

I really enjoyed this dvd, it has rare moments of elvis. : )

Amazon.com essential video

Five years before he achieved broadcast history with his legendary 1973 global satellite telecast, Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii, Elvis Presley brought a less grandiose but far more urgent mission to this Christmas season network special: isolated from his original audience after a long sojourn on Hollywood soundstages, and threatened by the vibrancy and social gravity of rock, the King sought nothing less than to reclaim his throne.

More than three decades later, what has since become known as Elvis: '68 Comeback Special looms as the Memphis icon's most substantial achievement as a stage performer. If the candy-colored sets and hyperactive choreography of its larger production numbers smack of its network packagers' desperation to be hip, Elvis himself rises to a riveting, assured performance at the peak of his powers. Looking fit and relaxed, and sheathed in black leather, he covers a shrewd song list encompassing early rockabilly hits, gospel (albeit rendered unintentionally hilarious by its florid dance routines), and comparatively restrained ballads.

Standout performances include two intimate stage sets that put him literally within his fans' reach, most strikingly in a brief reunion with four of his earliest bandmates (including guitarist Scotty Moore and drummer D.J. Fontana). The latter segment is only a brief sample of a session posthumously released on video as One Night with You, which is, if anything, even better than this terrific portrait of a towering American artist. --Sam Sutherland

3 out of 5 stars Where's the ' surround sound '?.......2005-02-17

I originally purchased this item in May 2004.
I gave the disc oly 3 stars because of its Monophonic soundtrack! It had been advertised as 5.1, NOT 1.0 !!
Video was OK but not spectacular.

1 out of 5 stars poor!.......2005-02-05

Elvis Presley's 68 Comeback Special is a poor concert. Many songs are turned into medley's(who only wants to hear a partial song?). Also Elvis's performance just isn't anygood, and the setlist leaves a lot to be desired. Not enough big hits, and I hate the gospel medley, awful!

5 out of 5 stars Great late 60s TV.......2004-04-19

This program was taped at the NBC studios in Burbank. If you notice, some of the shots are clearer than others. This is because NBC was transitioning from one (older) set of color cameras to a newer set of color cameras. This was a real shift in technology at the time.... from tube cameras to transistorized cameras. You can see the different cameras in the background, behind the audience.

5 out of 5 stars THE KING AT HIS BEST!.......2004-04-12

The 1968 comeback special is Elvis at his best. After years of
Elvis doing movies, this special shows Elvis in front of a live
audience singing some of his number 1 hits. Also you see different segments with his original band members. A cool karate
number but the coolest thing is the opening number.(If your looking for trouble you come to the right place.) Trust me, this
dvd is a must for any Elvis fan.

3 out of 5 stars One for the Price of Two, but It's Still a Bargain...If That Makes Sense.......2007-04-17

(2 *'s) 'Elvis: Rare moments with the King,' is published by the same company that released 'Elvis: King of Entertainment'. It is shorter and repeats the highlights of the latter. With almost no musical samples, '...Rare Moments...' is almost more an archive of Elvis's sociological importance. It is interesting to see him interviewed on guest TV performances, but '...King of Entertainment...' has all of the best moments presented here plus some snippets of musical and film performances.

(3 1/2 *'s) 'Elvis: King of Entertainment' is more of a documentary than it is a compilation of performances. An overview of the highlights of his life, his career, his performances, and his movies, it makes a fine sampler.

    4 out of 5 stars 2 pack? Mine wasn't.......2005-02-08

It is called a "2 pack" but I had only 1 DVD recorded on both sides. This DVD has a lot of the great old B&W as well as color footage. Elvis from birth, then as a kid, in high school & with mom & dad. Then the usual early footage (or pieces of) from The Tommy Dorsey "stage show", the Tupelo concert with Elvis in black, the AWFUL Steve Allen show "tumbleweed" skit, Ed Sullivan, Milton Berle (on stage & on a ship), Hy Gardner calling, the "gas station fight" court room scene and the Frank Sinatra show; the things that most true Elvis fans have all seen repeatedly. There is, of course, the Army footage, the wedding shots, the 68 special, Aloha from Hawaii, many shots of Graceland, assorted 70's footage (from Elvis on tour, Las Vegas & the 3 press interviews) and even some clips from his movies (but not all of them). And it ends with many scenes from his final days and the aftermath. Although this DVD is really very well done, my only complaint is that 90% of the material on side 1, IS ON SIDE 2! And I do mean 90%! I only paid $5 for this so I am not mad but Goodtimes should know better than to try this. As with all Elvis documentaries, this one doesn't show the good stuff much longer than a few seconds. I'd really like to see the "Youth Benefit Concert", (where Elvis is really Elvis! [arm swinging & pelvis pumping], played in it's entirety with the right sound track. We always see the same 15 second clip with some other song dubbed in and that's it. Anyone know where I can find it? My advice here is to enjoy this one, but don't pay too much for it, only one side is really needed.
