Footability 2.......2006-11-10

I purchased this for my 14-year old son, who plays at the Gold Club level in So. Cal. The five or six offensive moves on this well-produced DVD are beautifully demonstrated and nicely photographed from many different angles, including from the rear, which gives the viewer an excellent perspective. But with a couple of exceptions, most of these moves seem too slow-developing to be used often at speed in game-type situations, at least at my son's level of play. The DVD continually refers to the "Base System," which evidently forms the basis for getting into and escaping from each of these moves. The Base System is not explained in detail in Footability 2, but it is incorporated and demonstrated to one degree or another in all of the moves. I assume that it is explained in detail and demonstrated in the original Footability DVD (which I don't own), and which hopefully includes simpler, and thus perhaps quicker and more effective, moves. Since the Base System appears to be the fundamental building block of most of these moves, I don't think it makes sense to buy Footability 2 without Footability (though I haven't seen Footability).

What A Shame.......2001-08-17

I don't know how this film has escaped an audience. This film tells the truly remarkable story of an Irish Traveller - a gypsy (think of a nonfiction version of the fellow Brad Pitt played in "Snatch") - and his trainer, the unforgettable Chick. If you follow amateur boxing at all, you will realize how truly remarkable this story is. I think the boxer's name was Francis. Francis, training on home made equipment, with only this extremely old and sweet man as his trainer, out in the middle of nowhere, makes it to the elite echelons of the amateur game, including an Olympic bid, with the entire town rallying behind him even though many were once prejudice against him because he is a Traveller. A truly excellent documentary.

SOUTHPAW FIGHTER.......2006-12-19

As Volume 14 of Fighting Spirit opens, Ippo and company are wrapping up their training in the woods. Takamura evens gets to go one on one against a man-eating bear with hilarious results, which further adds to his legend and ego as he gets a chance to go for the world title. When Ippo gets back to the city, he has no time to rest as he spars with the guy that's going to fight Sendo, a fighter named Shigeta, and gets roughed up because the guy is a southpaw. The guy is so strong that Ippo wonders if Sendo will be able to defeat him. Ippo takes a break from training and goes out on his first full-fledged date with Kumi, the girl he's had a crush on for most of the series.

This next to last volume of Fighting Spirit is nothing new under the sun for this excellent and exciting show. We get to see a lot of the humanity of the characters like Sendo and even the Chief as his old pal and rival Nekota comes to visit. Takamura comes off smarter than usual as he uses the bear incident to mythologize himself and scare opponents. But probably my favorite episode on this disk was the one about Ippo and Yumi's date at the zoo, which was a welcome peace before we start the last arc about the fight between Ippo and the winner of the Sendo/Shigeta bout. This is a great show.

Footability for U10 and Up.......2006-09-28

This video came recommended by one of our professional soccer coaches. As a recreational soccer coach, I needed some additional footwork moves for my team. She suggested this video, because this is what recreational coaches are not teaching. She said footwork is crucial if the player wants to play soccer in middle school,high school and beyond. Many of the kids today lack footwork ability. Being able to handle the ball effectively and under the players control will give an edge to the team. In reviewing this video, the moves are good and effecive but complicated at the beginning. This video shows 6 moves. In order to teach anyone of any age, the moves need to be broken down. The kids love learning new moves if you make it fun and the outcome is acheived. Don't expect them to learn the 6 moves in one season!

Soccer-Footability-Technical Footwork System.......2006-08-23

I am wanting to get a refund. I could not find a number to call anyone. The DVD is too simple. This is a case of false advertisement. The TV ad showed a demonstration with complex moves that my 13 year old wanted to learn. He has been playing elite soccer for several years now, and playing recreational since the age of 5. He is not a beginner, he plays on the #1 U13 team in the state of Georgia. I am saying this so that you understand that he would not have wanted it if he knew how basic it was. It was definately for the beginner, not at all what we were led to believe by the ad.
