3 out of 5 stars Dizzy..........2007-06-06

The content of this video would have been very interesting to watch if it were not for the director trying to add action to a naturally occuring event such as predators attacking prey...It jumps from clip to clip much too rapidly and it is difficult to watch...unless you like to be dizzy...

I gave it 3 stars because the content is good...But the clips needed to slow down a little so you would have more time to see what was going on.

4 out of 5 stars Don,t watch on a full stomach!.......2007-03-05

This was probably one of the best documentaries ever made, also the goriest! There is a scene where a pack of hyenas were mobbing a nomadic hyena, if that sounds bad enough later a uunattended hyena cub was killed by a male lion(Lions hate hyenas by the way) and when the mother returned, she began to eat the corpse of her cub! There are also scenes of lions eating other lions, and a mother leopard ate her cub since there was no other food for her to eat.I gave it a four because most of the fighting was between lions and hyenas and not from what probably be cooler fights like between l
ions and crocidiles. Do not eat on a full stomach because there are some realy nasty scenes such as when hyenas and lions are ripping each others guts. otherwise it is a pretty good movie and I reccomend you by it, make a review, and write whether you agree or dissagree with me about it.

2 out of 5 stars Simplistic rendering of a complicated ecosystem.......2006-12-16

Well, I will have to add my rather negative feedback to this short list of glowing reviews. Perhaps it has been awhile since I have ventured into the territory of the 'new' nature of animal documentaries, but I can't really recommend this to anyone. This documentary is presented in some kind of faux-militaristic format reminiscent of Desert Storm propaganda or equally squalid fare. Given the wealth of material the producers had to work with, I couldn't help but feel they squandered the chance to present these grim conditions with depth and objective grounding.
Granted, there is an element of 'territoriality' that arises naturally from the habits of these predatory animals -- among them leopards, lions, hyenas and cheetahs -- but to reduce this to some sort of 'combat zone' with 'imbedded' journalists and tactical 'psy-ops' reduces a complicated natural ecosystem to a simplistic human militaristic game of strategy, not to mention it hits about 9.6 on the cheeseball index. Did Jeremy Irons really narrate this?
I'm not sure how any of these reviewers could think the writing was of a decent quality, or even apt for the subject. Towards the end of the documentary, it appears even the writer gets tired of the forced analogies, and tones down the militaristic focus (a bit).
Despite the incredible footage, I was totally disappointed with the contrived and sensationalist approach. The great paradox is that although some of this material may be unsuitable for kids, they have reduced it to a level that would insult the intelligence of the average teenager.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest goddamn thing ever.......2006-11-26

Not a big follower of National Geographic. Used to watch it for hours on end with my grandfather in his living room in FLA because he thought it was the only worthwhile thing on TV. Of course, at the time, we were primarily watching films on the advantages long legged birds have in swamp lands. Haven't been a big follower since, and I tuned in the other day and caught this. I might not be g0ddamn Steve Irwine or the Nature Boy Rick Flair but I have an awesome nose for fantastic violence and this falls into the category of: "violence with extreme prejudice" War's everywhere. Ur'body bleeds. The neatest thing about canibalism is that it truly is a "jury of your peers". Hyenas are forgiving. Buy. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Documentary!.......2006-09-16

I myself am very interested in African Wildlife, and Africa can be a rather unforgiving place. This Documentary is very well done in the way it presents everything. It revolves around a long drought that happened at the Mala Mala Game Reserve in Africa, and is centered around five Main Predators. A Pride of Lions, A Clan of Spotted Hyenas, A Lone Leopard, Cheetahs and African Wild Dogs. It portrays what happens when water is scarce, and food is hard to find. These five predators constantley have to fight for food with each other, which leads to some amazing confrontations, hence the name Predators at War.
It is very well narrated and shows some amazing footage, One of my favorite parts is when several female Lions, A Hyena, and A Leopard are all fighting for the same meal, its tense! Its also very graphic and portrays the true nature of these beasts in Hard Times, so its not the best for the Kids. Its my favorite Animal Documentary and that's why it deserves a perfect Five.
