Editorial Review:

Emmy-winning actor Tom Skerritt narrates this journey through the seasons and colors of nature with poetry that mirrors the majesty of the locations onscreen. The narration is minimal, but the scenery itself and the music of Michael Gettel are what truly propel these images of the natural world.

In its 48 minutes, The Art of Nature: Reflections on the Grand Design offers colorful glimpses of the pieces of the world that many of us generally ignore. With time-lapse photography, we are able to see, in just a matter of minutes, a full day by a country stream and the full progression of stars in the night. While the music, poetry, and images may seem a bit New Age for some, the disc provides emotions and vistas that are indeed timeless. --Zachary Lively
Description
The Art of Nature is a musical and visual odyssey that explores the magnificence of nature's grand design, exploding with visions of spectacular cascading waterfalls; lush, temperate rain forests; shimmering reflections and the vast and mysterious landscape of the desert.

Andy Goldsworthy's Rivers and Tides is a truly beautiful, Scottish-German 2001 documentary about artist Goldsworthy, a Scotsman whose medium is nature itself and whose preferred studio is the outdoors, particularly where water forever flows, rises, and/or retreats. The soft-spoken, secluded Goldsworthy is seen hard at work making ephemeral sculptures out of bits of ice in the trees, or building tall, mysterious cones from loose rock, which stand like spiritual sentinels in forests and on shorelines, overgrown by plants or swallowed daily by high tides. Filmmaker-cinematographer Thomas Reidelsheimer goes to great and sometimes inexplicable lengths to make visual corollaries to Goldsworthy's ideas about underappreciated relationships between light, color, movement, balance, and fluidity of form in the real world, making Rivers and Tides a lively and always surprising cinematic gallery. Some of Goldsworthy's most miraculous natural installations--stone walls that snake through hundreds of feet of forest and stream, for instance--show up in the last half-hour. --Tom Keogh

Description

Wildly praised by the nation's top critics, the smash theatrical hit RIVERS AND TIDES is a mesmerizing, poetic and curiously contemplative portrait of revered Scottish sculptor Andy Goldsworthy, whose long-winding rock walls, icicle assemblages and other intricate, druidic masterpieces are made entirely of materials found in the wild. Gorgeously shot and edited by director Thomas Riedelsheimer, RIVERS AND TIDES is an intoxicating study of the fragile relationship between man, art and nature.

5 out of 5 stars My only review ever...........2007-06-11

This movie brings peace. The music so beautifully matches the art that it left me breathless.

5 out of 5 stars a wonderful documentary about an amazing man............2007-06-06

I was really blown away by ANDY GOLDSWORTHY'S RIVER & TIDES, the first time I saw it on the big screen in the movie theater in 2003. In all honesty, the big screen is the best way to fully experience the magic of Scottish artist Andy Goldsworthy's remarkable natural works of living and moving art. Since Goldsworthy's sculptures are made from transitory material he finds in nature (discs of melting ice that he so elegantly places near and around rootbound trees, cones made out of bits of pebble, just to name a few examples), none of his pieces last forever. But, really, what does in this world? Human beings spend so much time feeling to be master in command over nature, one another, material and living objects, and RIVERS & TIDES truly brings the message of the temporary state of nature and humankind in the world. It ebbs and flows, and Goldsworthy's unassuming but dutiful continuity as a true natural artist, working with the medium of mother nature, to design intricate visual sculpture and installations out of the elements we take for granted all too often. This is an especially timely film in this day and age, where we are questioning what is to be done to work toward sustainability and conservation in the world. Highly reccomended!

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational for artists.......2007-05-28

I am an artist who sometimes gets too bound up with striving toward perfect realism and detail. When I first came across books of Goldsworthy's work, I was intrigued and liked the work. But, it wasn't particularly inspiring to me for my own work. Then, I saw this DVD and something happened in my head. It reminded me of how my art started when I was a kid...playing with the materials that were available in nature and just goofing around. The sheer joy of that was recaptured in my artist's heart by watching this film. For this touch to the past, I'm grateful to Mr. Goldsworthy and give him my public thank you here.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best movies I've seen in a long time!!!.......2007-05-17

Rivers and Tides fascinated me. I am an artist myself and the fact that he creates art and installments that will eventually be taken by the river, tide or by the ever-changing aspects of nature is something that intrigues the Buddhist philosopher in me. It gives a concrete experience of "impermanence" that anyone can contemplate because it is portrayed within the framework of this artistic film. Upon watching it a second and third time I was a little disquieted by the interaction he had with his wife near the middle of the film, but I figured that it was his artistic temperament coming out. I enjoyed sharing this film with friends who are also artists.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacularly serene!.......2007-05-17

The brilliant conceptions and thoughtful, meticulous excecutions of the stunning, evocative, nature-inspired sculptures by this sensitive, intelligent artist have been beautifully documented. Goldsworthy's articulate explanation of each installation adds to the viewer's potentially transcendental viewling experience, but they can be turned off without hindering the pure enjoyment of the awe-filled visual experience. I whole-heartedly recommend this 2 DVD set to people of all age who wish to have yet another justification to celebrate the beauty of this planet and the poetry of artistic vision and expression.

An artistically filmed visual story, of a beautiful young woman as she goes about her morning chores. In a tranquil country setting, she brushes her hair, does her laundry by hand, and bathes nude, all in the open outdoors. This DVD contains artistic nudity throughout - Parental discretion advised.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Boring.......2006-10-04

Ya. it had a pretty naked chick in it. but man it was booooring. definitely one for a very specialised market

4 out of 5 stars VERY NICE.......2006-06-28

VERY WELL DONE THIS MAN DOES GREAT WORK. STAY AWAY FROM GIRL ON A SWING IT IS VERY BORING.

3 out of 5 stars Wash Day?????????.......2006-04-02

Wouldn't consider this to be an artistic movie. Just an opportunity to
show a fairly attractive model in various stages of undress. Jenny is
worth the expense. Natural body in her early 20's. Hokey backyard
set though, so it doesn't have an expensive filming budget. Wish I had
a girfriend like her.

3 out of 5 stars A little light.......2005-10-10

The Idea was good.I thought this would be more euro.Should of had more than one girl. There wasn't as much full frontal as you would have expected.Just a few scenes in the tub. These movies are bought for the nudity, at least they should put some in it

4 out of 5 stars Glorified backyard camp out........2005-04-17

Camping out in the backyard was usually pretty fun when you are a young teenager with your friends. I guess if your spoiled older sister was going to camp out in the back yard, it might be like this. Actually, it's like how you want to imagine how a very beautiful girl might go about "roughing it" over the weekend. You can almost see a house nearby, but we have this "bedroom" set up almost in the woods or something. The DVD was probably shot on a $50 budget, so don't expect any Hollywood glitz and glamour here. It's basic, simple, down to Earth, plotless, and fun. Just a girl with a fantastic body going about some very simple "wash day" type chores out in the open air. It's very refreshing to see such a beautiful creature be so comfortable changing clothes, being topless while washing her clothes, and nude while bathing in an old fashioned outdoor bathtub. More nudity would have been nice, but there was plenty considering what you get quality wise. Maybe another David Hamilton in the making here. I'll be looking for more from this company.

Lena Anderson and Christina Bjork have turned their popular children's book into a charming, simply animated introduction to the work of Impressionist painter Claude Monet. Linnea, a vibrant little Swedish girl, is intrigued by the paintings of gardens she sees in a book in the home of her friend, Mr. Bloom. Together they go to Paris, where they visit the Marmottan, a little-known museum with an exceptional collection of Monets. Linnea discovers the familiar paintings are just "blobs and smears" up close, but become recognizable flowers when seen at the proper distance. Mr. Bloom explains that Monet sought to suggest the play of light on water and foliage, rather than recording it in detail. The next day, they make their pilgrimage to Giverny, to walk amid the scenery Monet painted. Linnea is bright and well-mannered but never priggish; her relationship with Mr. Bloom suggests mutual affection and respect. The animation itself is fairly minimal--comparable to Saturday morning cartoons--but the story and well-photographed paintings make up for its limits. Linnea could easily be expanded into a series that would teach children about the life and work of other important artists. --Charles Solomon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A heartwarming film for adults too!.......2007-01-16

This film is precious and will help you appreciate Monet's art even more. Part of the "animation" includes real life photographs of Monet's paintings and his home which is a museum now. The conversations and experiences of the young girl and her elderly friend are touchingly realistic and often humorous. The background music is also delightful. Now, I long to go to France if only for a picnic and a tour of Monet's garden!

4 out of 5 stars Great for young kids........2006-03-22

We had to watch this in art class this year. Being 11, the majority of us talked or stared at the wall while watching it but I watched it. I thought it was cute, good for younger ages. But very good to watch if your kid likes art. I had no idea of this, but it's dubbed from French. I thought Linnea was Swedish....

5 out of 5 stars A Meditation.......2004-04-29

April 28, 2004

I first came upon this charming short in the Children's Room of the Donnell Library, part of the NYPL. I was intrigued by a film for children explaining Monet, one of the harder artists to explain in art appreciation terms for young people. I was not disappointed.

This short from Sweden with English-language dubbing has a number of subtle qualities: a mediation on a well-known but elusive artist and his life; the relationship between Linnea, a curious and sometimes feisty child of about 9 or 10, and her upstairs neighbor, the kindly Mr. Bloom (Blomquist in Swedish), just the right friend and mentor a young person should have to introduce them to art, and on the French countryside they encounter at Giverny, a character in itself. Unusual and charming, Linnea could be introduced to other artists in future films but then the style and content might become formulaic. Better to leave them both in Monet's Garden. The animation is quiet and unobstrusive and would be good to introduce American children to, accustomed to more fast-moving and louder styles.

5 out of 5 stars A Lovely Alternative to "Scary Movies".......2002-12-11

My sons (3 & 6 years old) both like this movie and have watched it many times. They are active children, but do not watch much TV and are not comfortable with the violence on many videos such as many of the Disney ones. We have several of these movies which they call "scary" and refuse to watch unless a parent is right there. The boys prefer this movie (along with a few others like veggie tales) and both sit still for it. It has sparked some interesting conversations not only about art but also about travel, geography, and languages.

If you and your children prefer a bunch of bells and whistles (or fights and explosions) this is not the video for you. But if you want something different, something lovely without being too sweet or annoying, this is a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars Used for 3rd graders.......2002-11-25

I use this video in an "Arts Alive" presentation I do for third graders. I have used it for 3 years and it is VERY well received by the classes. It really brings Monet's paintings alive and shows them that art still lives. It is a combo of cartoon story, still photos of Monet's works and live-action video of his home in Giverny. A perfect choice for any school arts program of a great video for kids of any age.

Description

In spring of 2000, the largest moving object ever seen on our planet began its voyage - so grand in scale it changed the earth's rotation as it moved. Dubbed Godzilla by scientists, it had enough fresh water to supply the United States with all of its water needs for years.

A special team from the National Geographic Society and the New England Aquarium are the first to employ a bold new technological approach at exploring above, below and within the ice.

To get there they follow in the footsteps of early explorers, traversing the most violent seas on earth. The journey takes weeks, and once there, they must contend with the inhospitable nature of life at the bottom of the world.

Their journey takes them to the edge of human endurance and beyond the boundaries of mankind's experience. For the first time, explorers physically dive inside icebergs. Their attempts to explore lead them to a new undiscovered world.

They confront life and death decisions every day. Weaving their way through the treacherous pack ice - and well beyond the range of rescue - they make a dangerous flight in the spirit of discovery. But despite the natural beauty that captivates them, they are in a race to escape the clutches of the ice.

How will they get out?

Customer Reviews:

It takes a lot of courage to go dive into in iceberg, something that I would never do. But this team of divers got an extraordinary look into some big ice, and it seems some extraordinary luck as well. This is an enjoyable doc, an educational adventure.

5 out of 5 stars Antartica in HD.......2006-01-21

Wes Skiles and a team of scientist and explorers embark on a long journey to Antartica to explore an iceberg named Godzilla, because of its size. Its so big that (fresh water) that it could supply the US with drinking water for years. Wes films the whole thing in HD, so the color, depth, and clarity is outstanding on this DVD. THey explore the icebergs, above and below, and encounter many marine mammals, like seals, and penguins also. If you liked the Hidden Rivers of Florida and the River Returns DVDs, you will like this one also. You cant go wrong with Wes Skiles and his Karst production works. I highly recommend this dvd to any diver, or nature lover....

I originally watched this on PBS, and immediately ordered the DVD so I could watch it repeatedly and keep it in my permanent reference library. The filming is stunning, and the concept is incredible ... follow an aquifer underneath fields, cities, roads, pristine woods and trash dumps. For those who have only experienced water resources coming from a tap inside the house, this video dramatically expands consciousness of this miraculous and fragile resource. Seeing "first-hand" how groundwater moves, and how the "terra firma" literally floats above the aquifer is a rare and awe-inspiring experience.

5 out of 5 stars An important documentary.......2006-03-13

Water's journey explores the important connection between man and the very water that keeps us thriving. This is an important film and one that I wish was required in schools.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully refreshing! An outstanding environmental film that is devoid of pompous propaganda and fear-mongering........2006-02-15

"Water's Journey, The Hidden Rivers of Florida" is an outstanding environmental film, devoid of the usual propaganda, distortion, and fear-mongering typical of most nature documentaries of late.

Through a fascinating divers' journey underground, tracked above ground across town and country, the film examines sources of pollution in the hydrologic cycle, specifically in the aquifer beneath north Florida's many sinkholes and springs.

Without minimizing the seriousness of its topic, the production WISELY STAYS AWAY FROM:
--- gaseous overgeneralizations,
--- pseudoscience,
--- demonizing suburban living, modern agriculture and businesses,
--- implying that all we need is more federal regulations to stop already-illegal and senseless pollution.

INSTEAD, through sheer beauty, thoughtful narration, and dramatic demonstrations of how various pollutants are entering the aquifer, the film instills a desire to protect and take responsibility for the aquifer.

I can only hope that the same editorial care is used in the sequel ("Water's Journey, The River Returns"), which I have not yet seen.

5 out of 5 stars Indead the hidden rivers of Florida.......2006-01-05

Ever since I was a kid, I have been for ever fascinated with Florida's fresh water springs. There is just something about them, so clear, cool and inviting. I have always wanted to learn to scuba dive, so I could actually see what was under the water in these jewels as they are called. I finally grew up an took scuba lessons, and have had the pleasure of diving many of Florida's springs. They never stop amazing me. Im in AWH everytime I dive one of them. Wes Skiles has been a long time cave diver, camera man, and adventurer. He has made lots of documentaries, and The Hidden Rivers OF Florida is one of his best. It really makes you aware that there is more to springs that meet the eye. Springs are actually underground rivers that flow beneath Florida, and Florida's drinking water is derived from them. So pollution is a main factor here. The cave shots are spectacular, but disturbing. You see first hand how pollution is taking its toll on the underground rivers, and eventually comes bubbling up in the springs themselves. We all need to be aware and we all need to do our part to protect theses jewels of the earth. I highly recommend this dvd to any scuba diver, nature person, or anyone interested in knowing how and where Florida's freshwater sprngs are formed....Great documentary, very educational.....

5 out of 5 stars Terrific DVD.......2004-02-18

This is a terrific film. It has a very basic premise-what you discard today may be what you drink tomorrow. The video has illustrated the point in the best way I've ever seen it done. There can be no mistake about the connection between the aquifer (underground) water and activities on the surface.

Two particular things are great about the video. It's got a touch of humor. No dry, boring science here! The other is that the purpose of the video is conservation. But it's imminently practical. There's no suggestion we should go back to living in the stone age. The show gives several examples of what farmers and homeowners can do in their own lives to really make a difference-without sacrificing our modern lifestyle!

I highly recommend this DVD. It's fun to watch all the beautifully filmed cave diving, too!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Bahamas Beaches "THE BEST".......2006-07-09

If you are weary of conflict and violence and all the negativity
the media throws at you. If just want to be away. If you love
the sea. The Best Bahamas Beaches is the therapy you seek.
For me, it is the runaway best video experience in 60 years of viewing.

5 out of 5 stars Multiple uses for this great DVD!.......2005-01-27

The DVD is great. Beautiful beach scenery and minimal graphics. Perfect for setting the mood in your home when you need to relax.

I actually bought the DVD because I'm in a Jimmy Buffett cover band. ( www.cedarreeferband.com ) One bar we play at has a huge screen TV on stage behind where I put my drums. We turn it off when we play but I figured there's gotta be something better than playing in front of a big blank screen. Much of Buffett's music is about the beach, the vacation mindset, and the distant locations that many of us long for. This DVD is the perfect backdrop for the music and vibe we put out during our performances. It's gorgeous, yet it's not busy so it isn't distracting. The creative uses for this beautiful DVD are only limited by your own imagination!

5 out of 5 stars Awsome!!.......2004-05-30

Wow-
I love coming home from work and putting in this DVD. It helps me wind down and get rid of all of the stress of the day. The images are so beautiful and clear, it reminds me the vacation I took in the Bahamas. What a wonderful way to enjoy an evening at home!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Bahama Beaches.......2004-04-18

Another great wave virtual vacation dvd this one features the bahamas. This dvd looks similar to Caribbean Beaches with lapping waves but the islands look a little different. My favorite scene is the thunderstorm which is on Day 2 Shot 4 and 5.If you look carefully on shot 4 you will see a flash of lightning over the ocean overlooking the dark thundercloud. This is sheet lightning(cloud to cloud)you then hear several claps of thunder over the ocean shot 5.Interestly the waves don't seem to get bigger as the storm moves in they continue lapping.Another one of my favorite scenes is the lighthouse on Day 5 shot 3 and 4 with ocean views in the forground and I love many of the ocean views on this dvd as well. The waves are mostely lapping but occasionally they are so calm you get quiter wavelets. The picture is crisp similar to the caribbean beaches dvd it really brings out the blues and greens of the waves and the transistions from day to day are very quick. Also each day ends with a beautiful sunset.Make sure you turn on the beach subtitles to see were you are on Abaco,Eleuthera and New Providence.Just go to the beach subtitles in the menu or cut on subtitles on your remote. Now you can see the Bahamas when you want too.The Virgin Islands one is now available too.I highly recommend the Bahamas Beaches.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Bahama Beaches.......2004-03-28

Beautiful images that never fail to stun. I throw it on whenever I have company over on my 50" plasma. People love it! Pour some wine, set out some cheese, we're good for the night.

The DVD loops repeatedly, so I never have to check on it. The HD images really show off the quality of my television. Just like it says on the cover, "Turns my television into living artwork."

Just gave out a bunch for Christmas presents. All my friends are stoked.

5 out of 5 stars An audio visual vehicle to a tranquil place........2005-11-30

I was fortunate enough to see this movie in it's theatrical release. Being shot in high definition it was amazing to see the detail of the images. The water looked like it was going to jump off the screen.

The movie is enjoyable on many levels. I started watching it analyzing the video shots and paying careful attention to the music. By the end it had transported me to a pleasant world where I stopped categorizing and analyzing to just enjoying being in the moment. It left me with beautiful images in my minds eye and a tranquil feeling of peace.
