The Great One.......2007-01-11

I'm a huge Gretzky fan. When I happened on this item one day, I bought it in a flash.

The quality is a little lacking in some of the game clips, but I suppose that is to be expected since it is a bit dated. Content overall is pretty good. There could never be anything bad to say about getting to see the Great One in action over and over again. This set is definitely a keeper.

This is a nice DVD set and a very good review of 99's remarkable career. John Davidson interviews Wayne and the conversation between the two is smooth and never seems forced. Certain sections are introduced by Keifer Sutherland. I can't say it's a complete look at his career (nothing on his brief stint with St. Louis) which is why I didn't give this set five stars. With the exception of the game where Wayne scores his 802nd career goal (Vancouver's broadcast of the game is the one on here), all games are CBC telecasts. The games are all restored and look and sound as good as they could possibly be. You'll either like or be annoyed by the removal of a lot of the time between faceoffs of the games. A recommended purchase for Wayne's fans and all hockey fans.

Very Cool set..........2006-07-17

This is a great set. It is a shame for those customers who had already purchased the 2-disc version... All-in-all there's a lot of great hockey on here. The editing could have been smoother - as soon as there's a whistle you jump to the face-off; it may take a minute to figure out what the result of the whistles was - sometimes the edits rush you along so quickly you wonder if a penalty was actually called. I guess you can get used to it. Also, the set focuses almost entirely on Wayne's carrer as a goal scorer, obviously that's probably the most exciting aspect, but in a 4-disc "Ultimate Gretzky" set I would have liked to see more about the well-rounded player he was. It would have been nice to have some highlights for all of his assists - Wayne the incomparable set-up man. Otherwise, thoroughly enjoyable.

Only one quibble.......2006-06-14

This is a great DVD set. However, as a LA Kings fan I have to say that it just isn't the same seeing the two LA games without the Bob Miller commentary. The man is in the Hall of Fame as a hockey play-by-play announcer. I wish the NHL and producers of this set could have found a way to have an alternate sound track with Bob's commentary-- especially of these two memorable games. In my memory I can hear Bob..."the Great One is now the greatest of them all!" and his excitement as the Kings qualified for the finals for the first time. Seeing those events without Bob's voice just doesn't carry the same power for me.

Still, this is a small matter in the big picture of an otherwise awesome DVD set.

A high water mark for prosthetic movie magic, this primate-vs-man epic--spanning four movies, a TV series, and an animated series--was as integral to the 1970s as Led Zeppelin or muscle cars. So how to properly pay tribute to a science fiction franchise about intelligent apes roaming a post-apocalyptic earth?

In a freaking ape head boxed set, man.

It's true. 20th Century Fox packaged the entire run--movies, TV series, animated series, and the 2001 Tim Burton remake--in Caesar's head. Actually, the 14 discs are efficiently packaged in a fold-out book that slides into the bust's back. The bust is smartly dressed in green canvas, with zippers that don't actually lead to pockets. The hair is a luxurious mane that could have been wasted on at least three toupes. Put this masterpiece of DVD packaging on a shelf and watch it catch the gaze of everyone who walks into the room. Unfortunately, the set does not come with any supplemental reading material; an essay or two on the impact of Planet of the Apes would have been nice. The set is limited to 10,000 copies and comes with a numbered certificate of authenticity. For those who don't want to commit to the full ape head experience, most of the discs in this set--sans the animated series, TV show, and Tim Burton remake--can be had in the Planet of the Apes Legacy Boxset --Ryan Boudinot

Wow! What a set! If you love POTA's Then you gotta have this set! All the films,TV episodes,documentaries and cartoons.....you name it,it's here! all remastered and looking great! It even comes in a very cool apes head! The only thing they could have added is the director's cut of "Conquest"&"Battle"(if they exist?). This is a must have for the ape fan!

This has got to be the ultimate DVD box set. Not only is every single filmed Apes project included (think about that for a moment, every single Apes project put to celluloid), not only are all the movies are anamorphic (squee), but it's all packaged in an authentic Ape head replica. Maybe you gotta be geeky, but that's just freaking awesome!

I've displayed my Ape head in the living room for the time being and I get a kick out of the jumps and creeps it gives people. Truly a set for the fans, completists and DVD collectors.

Going Ape over my new Ultimate Collection.......2006-12-27

It's as simple as this: Every Ape Movie, Episode, Cartoon, and even Burton's revisioning- All in one very cool Ape Bust.
The best part - aside from having it all in one collection - is that they restored "Battle for the Planet of the Apes." I hated the version I owned in the Legacy Box Set because they had removed the scenes about the bomb. (If you're as big a fan as I, you know the scenes I mean.) I was furious about that, because those scenes are essential to tying the whole story together. But now that they are back- I am happy as a monkey in banana cream pie.
This really is the ULTIMATE collection for the ULTIMATE apes fan.

For Those Who Love To Fly.......2006-02-26

For those who have wanted to fly since childhood this film brings back memories. Yes, it's somewhat corny plot-wise, but the flying is authentic and real. The flying scenes are beautiful. The characters are wholesome and a bit unreal in many ways, but to someone who dislikes Hollywood and such, they were refreshing. Talented? I suspect the script as such didn't allow real talent to come out. This is a documentary. The flying scenes are the big thing in this movie made for iMax theaters, the plot is second fiddle. I wish I could see it on an iMax screen. I say THANKS to the producers and actors for making a film for those of us who wanted so badly to fly as kids. For me, like Zac, the dream has come true.

Excellent 3D, predictable story.......2006-02-25

Gladly, I did not purchase this DVD. It was given to me for free when I ordered the fantastic Virtual FX 3D System from edimensional.com. As for the movie, the story is totally predictable and a bit cheesy at times. The kid in the beginning isn't all that smart. Sure, he is inventive, but doesn't do any proper research into the mechanics of flight until his dad takes interest. Plus, his parents do not get involved with the kid's interests until he starts performing crazy stunts. Wouldn't you think they'd be with him in his aerial dreams from the start? His inventions remind me of the suicidal inventions created by the first people trying to achieve flight. The bicycle-crappy hang glider combination the boy makes would not have glided like it does in the film. His weight and that of the bike would have dropped the contraption right to the ground after going off the ramp. I also have to wonder why Canadian flyers are down in Arizona doing Operation Red Flag style dogfights over Lake Powell and the Grand Canyon. How come they are not up in Canada?

Other than the story, which needs serious tweaking, the 3D depth effects are great. Of course, I must tout the Virtual FX 3D System again, because you can now achieve nearly identical results with any 2D source, like TV shows and any movies on DVD or video. But, since the IMAX film was literally filmed in 3D, the effects are much more pronounced. The inner cockpit views of the pilots during the flight scenes are poorly done though. Sure, they're in 3D, but are clearly staged instead of actual in-flight views of real pilots.

On the whole, the movie is worthy of having if you desire to increase your field sequential 3D film collection, just don't expect a highly engaging and emotional experience with the story.

...but if you must add to your field-sequential 3D movie collection (and you know you must), you might as well add this. 3D effects are the main attraction here, so don't bother with this if you don't have the high-quality field-sequential (HQFS) viewing system for 3D. Better choices for HQFS 3D movies would be Transitions or Spy Kids 3D (HQFS). See my 3D list here at Amazon for other titles.

Ultimately for kids ..........2005-07-12

In 2d........forget it!
In 3d, "Ultimate G's" is watchable, but its just not as special as movies like "Haunted Castle" or "Alien Adventure". There are some pretty cool flying sequences, but the 3d effect of watching planes flying in the air just isn't as thrilling as some of the "rollercoaster" affects in the two movies previously described.

Ultimately, the 3d version of "Ultimate G's" doesn't cross the barrier into adult entertainment. It's good to watch once or so in 3D, but kids will probably find it more satisfying than adults (especially for repeat viewings).

I'm glad to have this movie in my 3d collection, even if its not the best. If you are looking for an AWESOME 3d movie and haven't seen any of the mentioned films in this review.....I would suggest "Alien Adventure" and "Haunted Castle".

"Ultimate G's" is good-just not great. The computer and digitally animated 3D movies (Ultimate G's is a live story with real actors, planes, etc..) are really where the ultimate action is at!

No G's In This Movie.......2004-04-01

They chose the wrong title for this movie. Most of the movie is a story about a boy who wants to fly but can't ever get off the ground.

An eclectic collection of Best Picture winners.......2007-02-03

The group of films in this collection is so varied, it would be hard to be a real fan of one of the five and not really dislike one of the others. There's no common theme here, not even a time period. The films included are as follows:

All Quiet on the Western Front (1929-1930) - A group of German schoolboys are encouraged to sign up to fight in World War I. Once they get to the front, they encounter the harsh realities of killing your fellow man up close. It's still a powerful film because it was made pre-code and there was much more freedom to use harsh symbolism than in films made after 1934. It really embodies the antiwar sentiment that was common between the world wars. (5/5)

The Lost Weekend (1945) - This is another really great film. Great acting by Ray Milland as Don Birnam, an alcoholic writer whose brother pays his bills so he can go on drinking. After decades of movies making drunkenness look like great fun, this film showed just how low a man can sink when he really needs a drink. (5/5)

The Sting (1973) - This was a different kind of film to win the Best Picture award. It seems like it should be a film noir, since it is about revenge for a grifter buddy murdered by a mobster, but the mood of the film is actually rather playful. (5/5)

The Deer Hunter (1978) - This is a great film about the effect of the Vietnam war on three friends from Pennsylvania. It is effectively a war movie without a war. The focus is more on what happens before and after the three experience what happens in Vietnam than what happens during their time in the military. (5/5).

Out of Africa (1985) - This is one of those slow beautiful-to-behold but impossible-to-watch kind of movies that the Academy honors every now and then. I've sat through it exactly once, just so I could honestly say I had given it a chance, but I really found it insufferably boring. It's supposed to be based on the life of storyteller Isak Dineson, who lived in Africa from 1913 until 1931 running a coffee farm, and her love for a man that wants to keep his freedom. (3/5)...And I consider myself an easy grader.

If you average the ratings of the movies together, you get 4.6/5, so I round up the score to 5 stars. You basically have four excellent films in this pack and one pseudo-dud. However, your mileage may vary depending on your taste in film. It's a good value if you are trying to collect the Best Picture winners on DVD and you can find it for under sixty dollars, plus its content doesn't overlap with the other Best Picture boxed sets. Overall, highly recommended.
