Amazing that a nearly hour-long film about a Beatle that contains almost no music could still be worthwhile, but that's the case with John & Yoko's Year of Peace. The year in question is 1969, when the newly married couple staged the notorious "bed-in" at a Toronto hotel to promote their somewhat naive but sincere campaign for world peace; they then moved on to Montreal, where "Give Peace a Chance" was recorded in another hotel room, before returning to Toronto, where Lennon (accompanied by Eric Clapton and others) became the first Beatle to perform in concert without his mates. There's no film of that event here, but there is a great deal of other Lennon footage, revealing him to be utterly honest, unpretentious, gentle, and approachable. Ono and others who were there recall the events in interesting interviews conducted around the time of this 2000 documentary, but it's the scenes from '69 that make this an invaluable document. --Sam Graham
Description
The year: 1969. Headlines blare war and civil unrest while John Lennon and Yoko Ono are in love. The eccentic rock 'n' roll couple has just gotten married, and more than happy to be together, they want to change the world. Lying in a hotel bed surrounded by journalists, they announce their mission for peace and invite the rest of the world to symbolically climb into bed with them and share their dream. People call them silly, naive, even ridiculous, yet one famous couple's bed-in spread new hope that there really could be an end to war, hate and violence. Here is rare footage from that amazing time, including footage from John and Yoko's wedding, the infamous bedside confrontation between John and conservative cartoonist Al Capp, Lennon debating media expert Marshall McLuhan, and meeting Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. Now twenty years after Lennon's murder, Yoko and others involved in the peace mission reflect on the events of that magical, mystical year.

A movie that would not have been out of place in the run of paranoid-political thrillers of the 1970s, Shooter works an entertaining variation on the assassination picture. Mark Wahlberg, carrying over good mojo from The Departed, slides neatly into the character of Bob Lee Swagger, master marksman. Swagger has retreated from his duty as an off-the-books hired gun for the military, having become disillusioned with his government (switching on his TV at his remote mountain cabin, he mutters, "Let's see what kind of lies they're trying to sell us today."). Ah, but the government needs Swagger to scope out the location of a rumored attempt on the life of the president, so a shadowy government operative (Danny Glover) begs Swagger to use his sniper's skills to out-fox the assassin. From there--well, spoilers are not fair, since the movie has a few legitimate shocks and a very nice wrong-man scenario about to unfold.
A novel by the Washington Post's Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic Stephen Hunter gives the movie a logical spine, even if the premise itself is the stuff of conspiracy theorists. Wahlberg gets support from Michael Pena, as a skeptical FBI agent; Kate Mara, as a trustworthy widow; and Ned Beatty, trailing along memories of Network, as a supremely cynical Senator. Along with the well-executed action sequences (the previously unreliable director Antoine Fuqua gets it in gear here), the movie includes a few potshots at the Bush administration. No, that doesn't put Shooter at the level of The Parallax View or All the President's Men, but it provides some tang along with the flying bullets. --Robert Horton

Muscular action and political propaganda.......2007-07-09
First, the bad. This film is really stuck in the 70's. Muscular violence and anti-corporate propaganda mixed in way guaranteed to sell.
That said, it is very well done. If you want none stop action, romance and intrigue, this your picture. The techniques used by the sniper teams has been coached by experts.
I'll probably buy a previously owned version from local video store.
I am just a patsy..........2007-07-08
The timing of this movie is impeccable-with the weariness the American public has developed and the growing disdain for some of our current political leaders. There are some obvious parallels here with the current times.
Aside from that, this is a pretty typical action flick. Action star Mark Wahlberg gives a solid performance as Bob Swagger, a former marine scout sniper. The story opens in Ethiopia, where he is on a covert mission that goes astray. He and his best friend/spotter, Donnie, are left for dead.
Of course Bob survives, and ends up disappearing to his remote hideaway back in the states. Three years later he is informed that a code was broken on an upcoming assasination attempt of the president. He is asked to help prepare and stop these efforts.
So the story goes. An evil act of this magnitude really builds the suspense. The president ends up surviving, but the Ethiopian arch bishop standing next to him gets tagged by the sniper. And Bob is the perfect man to blame.
Here's where the story gets a little ridiculous. Bob is able to escape his pursuers by driving his stolen car into the river and sneaking away on a passing barge. Riiiiight, that's believable. I saw that one coming too, but was hoping it wouldn't go there. Oh well.
There are some other moments that will require some uh, shall we say suspensions of belief. There are some pretty good action sequences mixed in to distract you from the plot holes. Mark makes the best of his role and helps the story stay afloat. But it stays in shallow waters, for the most part.
I think the overall message this movie sends is disheartening. It basically is labeling our entire government as being corrupt. Plus it's a horrible depiction of our powerful military waving its evil iron fist to accomplish "the greater good".
Please, somebody, say it ain't so...
Lots of bang Little for your buck.......2007-07-08
Great for a 14 year old boy...... Anyone else it is nerve riding... Very predictable. Marky Mark does look great in a white feather outfit in the end.... Save your money and see it on TV.
3 &1/2 Stars evil america meets the angry patriot movie.......2007-07-08
Shooter is a pretty good action flick if... you can really suspend disbelief from the second scene on through the rest of the movie. Otherwise, although Wahlberg continues to make a great action star, this plot is so unbelievable, and the political agenda is so deep you may find yourself talking to your TV, and wishing you'd passed.
Shooter.......2007-07-08
One of the best movies I have seen in a LONG time. What made it so great was that there was no love story (well, not a long drawn out one anyway). Love stories always ruin these kinds of movies. The actors were awesome, the killing scenes were awesome, and the BOOM was awesome. Will watch it again and again!

The lurid scenario--a nymphomaniacal white trash nymphet (Christina Ricci) is held prisoner by a bitter bluesman (Samuel L. Jackson)--gives way to an affecting tale of redemption in Black Snake Moan, writer/director Craig Brewer's follow-up to the acclaimed Hustle & Flow. Lazarus (Jackson, Jungle Fever, Pulp Fiction) finds Rae (Ricci, Monster, The Ice Storm) beaten unconscious on the road in front of his backwoods house. After bringing her inside, he learns of her wanton ways and decides to exorcise his own demons by curing Rae of her sexual compulsion. Black Snake Moan could have been terrible, but Brewer takes his story seriously enough to dig into the genuine emotions of such a situation (though along the way he certainly flirts with sexploitation overtones--several scenes look like they were plucked straight out of a hitherto unknown 1970s trash classic). Ricci, Jackson, and the supporting cast (including pop star Justin Timberlake, giving a surprisingly good performance as Rae's boyfriend) treat the characters with respect, honesty, and humor. The result is off-kilter and maybe a little too fond of its sleazy cinematic forbears to truly hit the emotional notes it's after, but Black Snake Moan has considerably more substance than its marketing would suggest. --Bret Fetzer

justin sucks.......2007-07-08
If you want to watch this movie simply becuase J.T. is in it, you're making a big mistake. He has a maybe 20 minutes of screen time 15 of which he is crying. he is simply a pretty boy in a tough guy role and I didnt believe his performance for one minuete.
As moving as watching a snake shed its skin.......2007-07-07
Let me say up front that I love Samuel L. Jackson's movies as well as Christina Ricci's. However, this is not one of them. Black Snake Moan had potential, but the film seemed content only to slither toward the tall grass of absurdity.
First, Black Snake Moan failed to deliver the goods due to cartoonish characterizations, particularly Ricci's over-the-top portrayal of a nymphomaniac. Second, the obvious mismatch of social, cultural and historical realities in this film was just too distracting for Black Snake Moan to be taken seriously.
Third, although Jackson did his best to sing the Blues, he just doesn't have what it takes. This wannabe Blues film would have been much imporved if Jackson's singing was dubbed over with the Bluesman Alvin Youngblood Hart's voice. After all, Hart was already contributing to the film, anyway. Last, Son House was shown in two short film clips imparting earthy wisdom, but sadly not a bar of his powerful, soulful voice resonated in this psuedo Bluesy film. What a gaffe.
Chains of Redemption.......2007-07-06
This had to be a marketing nightmare for the execs at Paramount. The image most people had that I spoke to at the time of it's release was that this was a film about a black man who chains a white girl to his radiator. Lurid bondage images ensue. I can imagine this tag would repel black audiences as well as white. Though I've been a fan of both Samuel L. Jackson and Christina Ricci for years my wife refused to see the movie with me when it was in theatres. Paramount doesn't help it's cause by reinforcing this image in it's cover art. This will probably turn out to be one of the best films of the year. Let's put things in context. Lazarus (Jackson) is experiencing a personal crisis because his wife recently left him for his brother. Rae (Ricci) is a young woman with deep psychological wounds whose G.I. boyfriend Ronnie (Justin Timberlake) is shipping off. Lazarus salves his sadness with booze. Rae also engages in self destructive behavior not the least wanton promiscuity. After a night of loose behavior with a bunch of rowdies Rae is picked up by Ronnie's best friend and subsequently beaten and left for dead on Lazarus' farm. Upon finding a semi-conscious Rae, Lazarus attempts to nurse her back to health. Lazarus, a god fearing man, subsequently finds out about Rae's reputation and in a drunken fever chains Rae to his radiator. It is Lazarus' feeble attempt to reform Rae. Not to give anything away Lazarus' eventually has an epiphany and realizes you cannot enforce morality but you can set an example. It is then that the true bond between Lazarus and Rae grows. There is a real love between the two and they have a redemptive influence on each other. In other words they heal each other's wounds. The film also emphasizes the healing influence of the polar opposites, religion and music, mainly the blues. You won't find a more beautiful scene than the one where Rae sings "Let it Shine" at the knee of Lazarus as he strums his guitar. "Black Snake Moan" is one of the more daring and provocative films in years. Though it's rough going at times there is a morality at it's center. Credit director Craig Brewer for tackling challenging material and making it work. Jackson, who I always admired for taking ambitious roles, may have given the performance of his career. This isn't hyperbole. You have to see it to believe it. Ricci is just as good here. Timberlake also gives a sympathetic turn here as the anxiety-ridden Ronnie. "Black Snake Moan" is a film that should not be forgotten.
Oh, Grow Up..........2007-07-04
It's like a bright 12th-grader, having read a little Welty, O'Connor and Faulkner, somehow snagged a budget for a Hollywood film. The images are all there, but there's no feeling for what they really mean, so it's all surfaces, explicaton and cliches. We get Nobody Grows Them Butterbeans Like Ol' Lazarus, Who Don't Play Them Blues No More, and a gaggle of characters wanting to seem deeper than they really are.
Just for starters, Samuel L. Jackson is a foot taller than Christina Ricci. One of his button-down shirts would cover her up, but that doesn't happen for more than an hour, because this is a film, landscapes only go so far, and there needs to be some eye candy to set against all that preachin' and standin' around. Okay, fine, it's a fable--I mean, after all, that chain is over the top, and it would never, ever happen that way--but then in the extras, Craig Brewer, the writer/director, asserts that the radiator is a metaphor for basic values that ground us.
Um, no. Mixing fable with dirty realism isn't new, but it doesn't work here, because Brewer hops lazily between the two genres rather than fusing them together. Brewer might have wanted more, but to the viewer, the radiator is just the radiator, and for all the staging, the attempt at a story of love and redemption really doesn't lift beyond a fairly creepy madonna/whore redemption fantasy. For better examples of what Brewer was trying to do, take another look at two Jim Mangold films: Walk The Line, which merged fable and biopic, and Heavy, which essentially takes Black Snake Moan north to New York state, and packs a bigger punch.
Lots of aspirations in Black Snake Moan, some good acting, and very good cinematography, but immature writing kills the film.
"I aim to cure you of your wickedness".......2007-07-04
Read it an weep, and with that one line of absolution spoken by Sam Jackson, Black Snake Moan takes you on a journey of faith, salvation, redemption and forgiveness of the two main characters Lazarus and Rea, two people who have suffered and endured hard times throughout their lives. Lazarus is trying to come to terms with his wife of 12 years leaving him for his younger brother. Rea is a woman who has suffered unmentionable sexual abuse since her childhood and therefore acts out the part for others to prey upon her. One night after a night of hard, careless partying she is beaten and left for dead on the road near Lazarus's house. Not knowing what to do but help her, Lazarus takes it upon himself to bring Rea back to health, only to discover that she has far deeper scars and problems than the physical ones left on her face. He is then determined to make her well, and through his faith, and belief that "God saw fit to have us cross paths" he does so the only way he knows how. The two ultimately develop a friendship under unusual circumstances, and through music which Lazarus has sworn off for so long, the two heal one another while unknowingly shedding their demons. The cords struck by Sam Jackson playing "Black Snake Moan" will resonate through you and send chills down your spine, which also turns out to be the turning point between the two characters in the film. This was a fantastic film I thoroughly enjoyed with Sam Jackson and Christina Ricci. My only disappointment was that Justin Timberlake was cast in this film, but fortunately with his roughly 10 minutes of screen time I can tolerate it. The soundtrack is phenomenal, and if you are as big a blues fan as I am, both the soundtrack and DVD are well worth purchasing. Sam Jackson is one of those rare actors that his on screen presence demands your full attention.Truely a tallented actor, Jackson took it upon himself to learn how to play guitar for this very film. The music in this film tells as much about this story as the dialog does, almost as an additional character playing alongside everyone else.Ricci is another tallented actress with a bright future by taking roles that get her noticed while graduating out of the kiddie roles she is most remembered for.Black Snake Moan delivers superb acting both by Jackson and Ricci, a fantastic and originally written story with a soundtrack to carry it every step of the way. I highly recommend this film, seeing is believing.

soap opera takes over super hero.......2007-07-08
It's apparent that the producers want to keep Lana center stage even at the expense of the supposed starring super hero. Smallville has turned into the Lana and Lex show. The series took a wrong turn the year it prematurely killed off Jonathan Kent. Next, they developed an inane relationship between Martha and Lionel under the approving eyes of Clark. Not to mention -- how are Clark and Louis supposed to meet for the first time at the Daily Planet when they've already lived together in Smallville? This was a terrific show for the first four years, but this last year isn't worth buying. I don't see how the present writers, directors, producers can bring it back on course. They need a new team, one that understands the Superman lore -- one that realizes its job is developing the young hero into a superMAN and not keeping a prominent role for Lana. She was darling, but it's past her time.
Promise.......2007-07-04
Season 6 started out as a disappointment...it had the feel that the characters were 'pulling away' or 'dis-interested' as most shows do that are spinning their final season. The Episode Promise, however, seemed to kick things back into place and go from there. I am biting my nails down to the bone waiting for season 7, and have pre-ordered season 6 already. yea!
Please don't make Lex a wimp.......2007-07-01
Hmmm....I kindof agree with most of the negative comments of the show I have read, although I did like subterranean, well at least the last 3 minutes of Lex in his dark suit walking the aile of 33.1.
I have to admit that I'm beginning to like Lex more than Clark since he has more dimensions to his character, especially when he saves Clark when he was caught under metal in the underground base. I was hoping that Lex would have built his army but was extremely disappointed in the last episode where that last phantom destroyed his army in the lab...what was that all about? Just when I think that Lex is so smart and cunning, something stupid happens to ruin his carefully, intelligently-plotted, laid out plans to take over the world.
I do like Lana, she seems hotter now than ever, but I too am getting tired of Clark holding on to her. A man of steel with a fragile heart?...Time to kill her off, or at least put her on the sidelines, being Lex consort again in the future.
I thought the Justice League formation was cool, but having Peter Pan, no-power Green Arrow leading it, just didn't do anything for me. I'm glad they forgot about him in the last ending episodes.
I also am wondering how they are going to pull off putting Clark with the cape and nobody recogning him. Is Clark going to kiss all of them and make them forget (like in Superman II)? I also agree with some comments about having more flight and fight scenes. I didn't care too much about Bizarro at the end...With so many cool, evil characters superman fought, they had to take that one?
Also, time for Lex to know about Clark's powers. I know he knows, but might as well make it official.
The only last recommendation (my point of view) is to stop tearing down Lex's character just when he's making great strides. What's up with the wedding scene when he breaks down when he kills the doctor because he wants not to lose Lana. Please... If Lex is to rule the world, he has to have a 'darth vader' like character, some weakness sure, but not a total breakdown (no, I'm not a Star Wars fan). His character is great, and the actor is fabulous, but please don't turn him into a wimp.
Overall, I think the writers/producers are doing an excellent job with the series.
Great but missing something........2007-06-19
To begin, I like this show. Can't help it. This is one of the few television series I actually watch with any kind of frequency or deliberation. I enjoy the story, charaters, special effects, and a dozen other things...But like any real fan, I find myself discussing futilely with my family (who are also hooked) what should be changed. The series has gotten progressively darker and unlike in other seasons, the sixth season doesn't seem to have any feel-good episodes to releave the intensity. And also, this close to donning a cape and no one is going to recognize Clark? Time to pick up those glasses! And considering all the powers Clark has now, I wonder why the Robin Hood copycat (aka...) and his team weren't a little more impressed. I mean, he should be so out of their league! Still, I intend to buy it. Though there may be some episodes I woudn't care to watch too many more times, I especially enjoyed "Sneeze", "Rage", "Subterranean", "Tresspass", and "Noir" (Tom Welling does a great Clumsy Clark). I think "Justice" could have been worked a little more but it was good, too. Then there was "Combat" which was tough but amazing. All in all, definitely worth owning.
The Good, The Bad, and The Bizarre.......2007-06-12
This season for me was disappointing. To me this was not ventage Smallville. The season premiere, the season finale, the wedding, and an episode here and there, were actually ok. But to me it seems like when Smallville moved to The CW, the graphics weren't even close to last season's. In this season, the focus was actually more on the supporting characters (Lex, Lana, Chloe, etc.) rather than Clark. Which is fine, but I just think they should have given them better storylines than what they had. And I know that The CW network had to have budget cuts, but even the shows they showed in high definition (Smallville, Gilmore Girls, etc.) just looked better last year on The WB than they do on The CW. I brought that up because the graphics on Smallville just seemed to be used more towards the season premiere and finale and not the rest of the season. I mean bottomline, this season was disappointing with some of the storylines and the development of the characters wasn't up to the level it should have been. I mean if it was up to me, I would just download the episodes I enjoyed, and not buy the season 6 box set. But if you are a die-hard Smallville/Superman fan, then this set is for you. I was just hoping for something more concrete this season than what they put out.

"I'm gonna have a good year, aren't I?" J.D. (Zach Braff), now an attending physician at Sacred Heart Hospital, asks in the fifth season's opening episode. All vital signs are good (the series did receive an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Comedy), but longtime Scrubs fans may be forgiven a sense of déjà vu, from J.D.'s whimsical reveries to Dr. Cox's (John C. McGinley) increasingly tiresome rants. The series itself acknowledges the palpable sense of been there, seen that with the clever episode "Déjà vu, Déjà vu." But don't pronounce Scrubs dead just yet. Directed by Braff, "My Way Home," the series' 100th episode, is a brilliantly conceived homage to The Wizard of Oz with J.D. and company finding their hearts, brains, and courage. Another powerful episode that shows a welcome maturity is "My Lunch," in which J.D. at last has lunch with his reluctant mentor, Dr. Cox, in the wake of a patient's death (happily, the music rights were secured for the DVD release so that the Fray's "How to Save a Life" is playing on the soundtrack when Dr. Cox has his own tragic setback), and the follow-up episode, "My Fallen Idol."
While Scrubs has a tendency this season to get "more ridiculous" (in one episode, Neil Flynn's Janitor defies Ken Jenkins' Dr. Kelso to secretly keep a crow in the hospital), the scalpel-sharp writing affords Braff moments that are, in his character's own words, "classic Dorian." In the episode "My Half Acre," he mixes his sports analogies to tell Elliot (Sarah Chalke), "What's waiting for me in my room is what's known, in football terms, as a slam dunk," as he mimes hitting a tennis ball. Mandy Moore, displaying a surprising knack for physical comedy, follows Tara Reid and Heather Graham as a fleeting love interest for J.D. Other character milestones include pregnancies for Carla (Judy Reyes) and two other characters best left a surprise. Good for whatever ails season 5 are this set's extras, including an entertaining series retrospective, featuring interviews with the cast and creators, as well as commentary by Braff for an extended cut of "My Way Home." --Donald Liebenson
Description
Make an appointment with the outrageous doctors of Sacred Heart. Garnering an Emmy® Award nomination for Best Comedy Series, SCRUBS' fifth season is "sillier and more whimsical than ever," raves NEWSDAY. This year, the laughs are off the charts as J.D. moves in with Turk and Carla, and Elliot uses an interesting form of blackmail in order to get her job back at the hospital. Jason Bateman and Cheryl Hines are just some of the sensational guest stars joining TV's quirkiest cast. Experience all 24 episodes, plus exclusive bonus features, including a never-before-seen extended cut of the 100th episode. It's just what the doctor ordered.'

And this is how the end started...................2007-07-09
Scrubs season 5 continued it's rich humor that made the first four seasons so funny, but started it's nosedive towards the end of season 5 that continued on into season 6. It's a sad thing to watch, many of the characters start to wear out their welcome and start to get more annoying than funny.
Love it!.......2007-07-05
I love scrubs. It is amazing,I cannot wait until season 6 comes out on dvd! It's such a cliff hanger!
great dvd set.......2007-06-28
i didnt get into scrubs until late season 4 and early season 5 and really like having the series on DVD. TV series on DVD has been great, whoever thought of that idea should be given medal...at least give them a little ribbon that says "the greatest"
Awesome, but Beware the End.......2007-06-27
If you like Scrubs at all, you will like season 5. Of special note is the 100th episode "My Way Home" which was directed by Zach Braff (JD). Do yourself a favor and watch the extended version. The commentary by Braff is interesting as well as it gives you insight into how Scrubs is filmed.
Be warned though: The last episode has a cliffhanger ending so if you don't (or can't) watch season six on TV then you will probably be a little miffed like me. Best solution: internet TV.
Overall, excellent season and worth the purchase.
I am a fan.......2007-06-27
We were so excited about getting the 5th season of a show we have followed and love. If you follow the series you already know that Scrubs is a great show. The series deals with serious topics and yet makes you laugh. Once we started it was hard to stop and then we wanted more. We own all of the series and hope they keep more coming.

For Reno 911 fans who believe that Comedy Central's improv-driven mock-reality series could benefit from more unbleeped profanity, uncensored sex scenes, and nudity, the feature-length R-rated Miami will be just the ticket. Perhaps less a movie than it is a Very Special Episode, Miami transplants short-shorts-bedecked Lt. Dangle (Thomas Lennon) and company to Miami for the American Police Convention ("They invited everybody"). No sooner can you say "bio-terrorism" than the hotel is quarantined, and Wahoe County's hapless misfits, shut out when their credentials can't be found, must step in and save the city from "complete chaos." Complete chaos ensues. As with the series, Miami unfolds in a series of hit and miss bits. The funniest are those that hew closest to the Cops template, such as an early "814" call that does not, as the officers believe, decode as armed intruder, but actually involves a loose chicken, and an encounter with a taunting good ol' boy who, when faced with an alligator in a swimming pool, boldly goes where officers Jones (Cedric Yarbrough) and Garcia (Carlos Alazraqui) fear to tread.
Happily, as was not the case with Borat, no innocent or unsuspecting citizens were emotionally harmed during the making of this movie. All of the jokes and humiliations are at the Reno squad's expense. Miami benefits from some subtle (and not so subtle) stunt casting, including Patton Oswalt (The King of Queens) in a small but pivotal role as the deputy assistant mayor, and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's hilarious, albeit short-lived cameo as a gung-ho bomb squad leader. It is a tribute to the crack ensemble that Reno's intimately etched characters do not need much of an introduction, and can be appreciated by those who have not seen the show. But longtime viewers are issued this warning that Miami crosses with even more impunity the thin blue line of good taste. A Rear Window homage in which we view each officer indulging in some alone time in their fleabag motel rooms may not be as bad as Borat's wrestling match, but really, there ought to be a law! --Donald Liebenson
Description
The story centers on a rag-tag team of Reno cops that are called in to save the day after a terrorist attack disrupts a national police convention in Miami Beach during spring break. They're not the best, but that's all we got. Based on the successful Comedy Central TV series.

Hilarious!.......2007-07-07
If you love tuning in to the series for comic relief, the movie version will not disappoint you. I believe they could've kept rolling the cameras and made a hilarious three hour movie. I'd have certainly watched the entire thing. I can't get enough of these characters! This is a skit that shows our beloved misfits at their best. Miami never knew what hit them...

good movie.......2007-07-05
If your like me, and love the Reno 911 TV show, then this dvd is a must own. I found it to be very funny at times.
Sets the benchmark for Police Parody..........2007-07-03
With earlier reviews that have been posted, it's just not necessary for me to delve into specifics about the why I enjoyed this movie. If you enjoy dry, dark, and crude humour, this movie is for you.
Enough said.
Comedy Genius - Good Production.......2007-07-02
Whoever gives this movie less than a full 5 stars is a comedic idiot. Do you know how rare it is for a TV show of this variety to succeed at all in adapting their material to the big screen? Let alone do it with the cohesiveness and consistency that this movie pulls off? It is done in mini comedy vignettes, just like the TV show, and manages to stay hilarious for 99% of the movie. And I'm tough. This blows away any comedy in recent memory and even beats the readily compared super troopers by a long shot. A real long shot. In short, as long as you don't have a limited social filter when rating your enjoyment of movies, you really can't lose with this comedy.
greatest movie of all time.......2007-07-02
this movie is hilllarious, its not exactly like the show, but has some of the same elements, but they made it feel a little more like a movie on parts, the features on the unrated dvd are great, and its in widescreen and the theatrical is in fullscreen only, i was highly impressed with that

Description
Tim Allen, John Travolta, Martin Lawrence and William H. Macy star in Wild Hogs, the hysterically funny comedy about four weekend-warrior friends who decide to rev up their ho-hum suburban lives with a cross-country motorcycle adventure. They don their leathers, fire up their hogs and throw caution and their cell phones to the wind as they hit the open highway. A lot can happen on the road to nowhere, including a run-in with the bad-to-the-bone Del Fuegos, a real biker gang who don't take kindly to the wannabes. Filled with hilarious misadventures, screwball situations and madcap mayhem, this laugh-out-loud comedy is a movie your whole family will go hog wild over.

the reason.......2007-07-05
every 15 seconds, there is a brain injury in the united states. by the time someone finishes this movie, they will have suffered 400 brain injuries. seriously.
A great cast makes this a great movie.......2007-06-28
Wild Hogs is a typical midlife crisis movie. Four men, who have been friends for years and who suit up in leather and ride to the local bar and grill regularly to hang out, suddenly wonder what happened to their lives. They all realize, one by one, that they've hit middle age and fallen into a rut, and they decide to take a cross country trip on their bikes to get out of it.
This is one of the more entertaining movies I've seen in a while. What made it for me, however, was not the plot or even the comedic moments but rather the excellent performances by a great cast. John Travolta plays the cool-guy-in-a-midlife-crisis role perfectly, and Tim Allen pulls off his when-did-my-life-get-so-bland part flawlessly as well. Throw in great performances by Martin Lawrence, a man desperate to get out from under his overbearing wife's thumb, and William H. Macy, a geek who hopes he can FINALLY do something that will make him cool, and you've got a great group of main characters.
Macy's performance is probably the most surprisingly good of the bunch. He's downright hilarious in this movie as the 'rebel nerd.' And Ray Liotta is excellent as the villain, the antagonist who tries to refuse this group of "Wild Hogs" their right to ride on the grounds that they're not real bikers.
This is a very funny movie and is sure to keep you entertained. With a relatively unoriginal plot this may not have been a great film if not for the excellent cast, but these guys will have you cheering for the middle-aged suburbanite and longing for the open road yourself.
Funny - Good for men & women.......2007-06-26
My husband and I don't often agree on movies - he tends to like horrors (too gory for me) and war movies (same problem) while I like comedy and sci-fi (okay, he likes SOME sci-fis, too) but I never would've thought I'd like a biker movie! This one I did. It's funny and it's manly but not so much that a woman can't appreciate it, as well. My favorite part is when some average (overweight) middle-aged man starts singing "Don't you wish your girlfriend was HOT like ME?!" Histerical!
Actors include: Tim Allen, John Travolta, William H. Mac, Ray Liotta, Martin Lawrence, and others.
Great Movie!.......2007-06-22
I loved this movie. I saw it twice; the first time with my friend who is a Harley man and the second time with my daughter, Both laughed all the way through. I can't wait to buy the movie. My Harley friend is also waiting to buy it to watch with his fellow biker friends.
Great Movie.......2007-06-19
I Loved this movie. this movie is about four friends (Tim Allan,John Trovlta, Martin Lawerence and William H. Macy) who love riding their Motorcycles. Now all four of them are stressed out and are having personal problems and they are being told that they are not real bikers and they are old. so they deside to take a road trip on their bikes and that is where the adventur starts. you will have to get the movie to find out what happens....

the office.......2007-07-07
I love this show. It took me awhile to understand it but I laugh out loud everytime. Finally a good show on TV. I can watch this show all day long!!!
Without question my favorite comedy on TV.......2007-07-07
Warning! There are spoilers in the following review.
Briefly, the history of my response to the NBC version of THE OFFICE is as follows: before it started horror that they were remaking a the BBC masterpiece, then surprise in Season One (at least after the first horrid episode, which I think all of us OFFICE fans would like to forget) that it was not only not horrid but actually pretty good, and then delight in Season Two as it got better and better. Starting Season Three I was fearful, afraid that it was not going to be able to keep the show on the level of genius that it had maintained through the previous season. But once again my expectations and fears were confounded. It easily stayed as fresh and as brilliant as it had been in Season Three.
In terms of format I find THE OFFICE to be one of the most interesting shows on TV. For the past twenty years most shows--well, at least almost all good ones--have struggled with a balance between standalone episodes (or the episodic format strictly speaking) and serial arcs. THE X-FILES, one of the most important shows in the development of the modern story arc, alternated between rigidly standalone episodes and what they termed their "mythology" episodes. But most shows have more and more come to adopt a hybrid format in which they will have episode elements while at the same time gradually moving forward their arcs. THE OFFICE in most ways is an episode series, in that for most of the characters everything restarts each week and they are not really part of an evolving story. For the most part THE OFFICE has maintained arcs built around office romances, most importantly Pam and Jim but also Michael and Jan, with Dwight and Angela as well as Ryan and Kelly in the background. But they managed to work in a couple of other arcs in Season Three as well, most notably Andy's attempt to rebuild the structures of power in the office. But nonetheless, the overwhelming ongoing story in THE OFFICE is that of Pam and Jim.
Season Two ended with Pam and Jim kissing during casino night. In Season Three we learn that Jim transferred to the Stamford office of Dunder-Mifflin in order to distance himself from Pam, who ultimately rejected his overtures. Ironically, shortly after Jim left she broke off her engagement to Roy. Most of Season Three deals with Pam and Jim's ongoing and largely unresolved feelings about each other. Things are complicated when in Stamford Jim begins dating the lovely and eventually likable Karen (played by the lovely Rashida Jones), which means he is unavailable to see Pam when he returns to Scranton when the Stamford office is closed. Of course we all want Jim and Pam together, but we like Karen also. The resulting situation is therefore somewhat the reverse of Season Two, when Jim spent the season pining over Pam. This year Pam pines over Jim, but with one major difference. While in Season Two Jim and Pam were best friends despite how Jim felt about Pam, in Season Three things are strained between them. Pam, in fact, is quite alone most of the season.
One definitely senses that Jim and Pam are finally on the verge of getting together in Season Four. Looking ahead for just a second, one wonders if the writers will truly allow this to happen. One truism in contemporary TV writing is that you can never let the main romantic couple on a show get together for long. This is known as the David and Maddie Problem, named for the lead couple in MOONLIGHTING. As soon as Bruce Willis's David and Cybil Shepherd's Maddie made love, interest in the show disintegrated (though personally I think the irregular appearance of new episodes was as much to blame) and it gradually came to an end. (This is also sometimes called the Lois and Clark Problem, since THE ADVENTURES OF LOIS AND CLARK saw a sharp decline in ratings as soon as the two of them became involved.) Since then writers and producers have been terrified of getting couples together. Generally when two people get together you can guess that something catastrophic is about to happen. So, will Pam and Jim try to make a go of it in Season Four? Will the writers attempt to overcome the jinx of David and Maddie? Just one of the mysteries to be solved in Season Three.
I cannot express how much I love this cast. I must confess that I side with a number of leading TV critics (like TV Guide's Matt Roush) in confessing that I'm not a huge fan of either Steve Carrell's Michael Scott or Rainn Wilson's Dwight Schrute. I know they are hugely popular with many fans, but I find both of them a tad too hard to believe in. I prefer the rest of the cast, which has expanded in importance over the course of the past two seasons. I love the way we have been able to get to know all the regulars in the office, not merely Pam and Jim, but Ryan, Kelly, Phyllis, Kevin, Meredith, Toby, Angela, Oscar, Stanley, and Darryl. And for the record, I don't always find Michael unentertaining. It is merely that at times he does things that make me so uncomfortable that I squirm. And Dwight is sometimes funny, though far too often he becomes so extreme that he passes over being funny to something else. I find Dwight to be at his best when he is trying to help others instead of reacting to his own all embracing set of fears.
I will confess gratitude to Dwight's frequent and sometimes wonderful shout outs to my favorite show on TV, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. One interesting aspect to television in the 2006-2007 season was the sheer number of references in various series to BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, which some observers has speculated may be the most avidly viewed series by TV and movie industry outsiders than any other (THE OFFICE might well be second; BSG creative genius Ron Moore confesses to be a huge fan). THE GILMORE GIRLS, HEROES, VERONICA MARS, SOUTH PARK, THE O.C., and several other series all made nods towards BSG, but no show more frequently than THE OFFICE. And Dwight may have had the best BSG line in any of the aforementioned shows in an episode when he confronted a somewhat older and very conservative looking gentleman at a Dunder-Mifflin part and asked him, "Do you watch BATTLESTAR GALACTICA?" "No." "You sir, are an idiot."
Like the previous season, Season Three provided us with a host of unforgettable moments. So many of them are hard to summarize because they are caught in a glance or a look, especially by Pam or Jim. Some highlights include Michael's insistence at giving Oscar a kiss after learning he was gay. Or Dwight's sly smile when Michael, speculating on the sexual preference of some of the office employees, asks Dwight, "What about Angela? I can imagine her with a woman. Can't you?" Or Kelly sprinting into Victoria's Secret after Michael offers to buy all of the women into the office a single item from their stock. Or Michael being the only person from the office to show up at an art showing by Pam and his buying one of her paintings for the office. Or Michael contemplating jumping off the top of the building onto a balloon that would certainly not keep him from dying. Or Pam running across hot coals and then confronting Jim over ceasing to be her friend. I'm sure that every fan has his or her own set of memories.
This was also the season when the show had a number of celebrity directors. Harold Ramis directed several episodes. J. J. Abrams directed one. And Joss Whedon, the creator of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, directed "Business School," in which Jim pretends to have been bitten by a bat that caught trapped inside the office. Jim proceeds to distress Dwight into thinking that he might have been turned into a vampire, first rubbing a tooth as if it might be on the verge of growing into a fang and later complaining of how bright the light is. Hopefully Season Four will bring additional well-known guest directors.
THE OFFICE proved so popular in Season Three that NBC briefly suggested that the show expand to an hour each week. Every fan I talked to reacted to horror at this. If we could be assured that the show would be a brilliant and as funny for an hour each week, then I'm sure everyone would be delighted with the prospect, but the fear is that the show would become diluted and there would be a watering down of ideas and humor. Luckily NBC backed off the request, though it was agreed that there will be four hour-long episodes in Season Four.
Lastly, hopefully Jenna Fischer will be recovered from a terrible accident that she had this summer in New York during the Upfront Presentation. According to what I have read, she slipped on a marble staircase and hit her back hard against the steps. Luckily, although she broke several bones in her back she did not sustain any nerve damage. Her recovery will evidently overlap with the beginning of shooting for the new season. I'm hopeful that she will be feeling well enough to not miss any episodes or more importantly to be in any ongoing pain.
Great but not as good as the second season..........2007-07-06
We already own all of these episodes on itunes but are excited to watch it on our tv. There are many great episodes and of course they wait until the last moment to tell us what will happen with Jim and Pam. It's annoying and wonderful, all at the same time.
JUST BUY IT.......2007-07-03
By far the best comedy on TV. You won't be disappointed. This is easliy the best season out of the three. Dwight is one of the best comedic character's I have ever watched on TV. I can't wait for this to be released.

The unlikeliest cult hit of 2004 was What the (Bleep) Do We Know?, a lecture on mysticism and science mixed into a sort-of narrative. Marlee Matlin stars in the dramatic thread, about a sourpuss photographer who begins to question her perceptions. Interviews with quantum physics experts and New Age authors are cut into this story, offering a vaguely convincing (and certainly mind-provoking) theory about... well, actually, it sounds a lot like the Power of Positive Thinking, when you get down to it. Talking heads (not identified until film's end) include JZ Knight, who appears in the movie channeling Ramtha, the ancient sage she claims communicates through her (other speakers are also associated with Knight's organization). What she says actually makes pretty good common sense--Ramtha's wiggier notions are not included--and would be easy to accept were it not being credited to a 35,000-year-old mystic from Atlantis. --Robert Horton

What the bleep is this piece of *;%!*#*! ?.......2007-07-07
Alas, this is probably the worst piece of C.R.A.P. I've ever had the sad opportunity to watch. Period! I would like to find one single reason why this garbage shouldn't deserve a minus 10 star rating. This is all about pseudo-science and opinion-based beliefs, nothing can be proven. There is not a shred of evidence-based knowledge to be found, just a lot of mumbo-jumbo-nonsense thrown at your face by so called "scientists" and self-proclaimed "experts". And they call this a documentary???? Please, get real, this DVD is a waste of money and time, if someone has the honest desire to hallucinate, he is probably better off investing in some quality pot. Don't let some quacks and charlatans insult your intelligence by poisoning your minds with this gibberish and pseudo-science lunacy!!!!
Thought Provoking.......2007-07-02
This is an interesting visual and scientific exploration of the Hermetic Principle "The Universe is Mental". Or at least that's what I got out of it. I highly recommend it for students of metaphysics, occultists, magicians, and even people simply interested in theories about quantum physics. It's worth watching a few times.
Defective DVD from Amazon.......2007-07-01
I bought this DVD from AMAZON over 60 days ago so it is over the return policy date. It was a birthday present and I it bought early. I sent the item. It was returned to me becuase the DVD was defective. The picture ran but there was no audio. I have just emailed Amazon my request for a refund. I do not know if they will refund it or not. I am listing this not as a complaint but to state that I was given a defective DVD.
Tripe........2007-07-01
What the Bleep!? is nothing more than New Age tripe. A haphazardly directed B movie with laughable early 90s special effects, a schizophrenically discordant plot-line, pompous wanna-be quantum physics "experts" and one woman named JZ Knight who could probably be diagnosed with DID and delusions of grandeur, this "documentary" is nonsense and a waste of any serious person's time.
Go for your Dreams.......2007-06-30
Why not? Keep your head on straight enough to be healthy and love. However, why not go for your deepest dreams with everything you've got? You may not buy everything in this film, but hey, a closed mind gathers no knowledge. Give it a chance and take what you want and leave the rest for another moment.

There's something about Perry! Perry Mason, as a canny 14-year-old remarks in the episode "The Case of the Pint-Sized Client," is "the best lawyer in town." Here's the evidence. In 15 chronological second-season episodes from the classic series by which all lawyer shows are judged, Los Angeles attorney Perry Mason successfully defends a host of clients so seemingly guilty that Nancy Grace would have had them incarcerated by the first commercial break. Created by Erle Stanley Gardner, Mason was already a popular character in books, films, and radio before coming to television in 1957, and Raymond Burr, usually typecast as a heavy in feature films, did Mason justice (Mason was ranked 28th on the Bravo network's list of television's 100 best characters). Punctuating his sentences with that dramatic intake of breath, Burr's Mason exudes gravitas and expertise. He gets capable support from Barbara Hale as his secretary, Della Street, and William Hopper as private detective Paul Drake.
In what may be television's most thankless role, William Talman costars as district attorney Hamilton Burger, who nearly every week loses what looked to be an open-and-shut case, usually as the result of some dramatic surprise witness (in one episode, a parrot!), an unorthodox legal maneuver, or a cross-examination courtroom confession ("I didn't mean to kill him, your honor"). There is no delving into Mason's private life, although one episode hints at Mason being something of a ladies man. When Della suggestively tells him a new client is in his waiting room, he replies, "Blonde or brunette?" Cleverly plotted, and infused with a palpable noir sensibility , Perry Mason holds up as more than TV Land nostalgia, although it is fun to see such familiar faces as Jesse "the Maytag Repairman" White, Edgar Buchanan (Petticoat Junction), and Joseph Kearns and Herbert Anderson from Dennis the Menace. No extras, but these entertaining episodes will definitely please the court. --Donald Liebenson

The case of the defense lawyer that skirts the law.......2007-07-08
This is a series of programs based a character in the writings of Erle Stanley Gardner. The CBS TV series stretched form 1957 through 1966.
Perry Mason (Raymond Burr) is a defense lawyer who is always thought of after it is too late for him to save the defendant from being accused of murder. Supporting Perry is his trusty more than friendly but professional secretary Della Street (Barbara Hale). And their trusty and sneaky privat investigator Paul Drake (William DeWolf Hopper, Son of the actress-turned-gossip-columnist Hedda Hopper). On the other side of the courtroom is the district attorney Hamilton Burger (William Talman) assisted by the not so neutral Homicide Lt. Arthur Tragg (Ray Collins).
You wonder how they get away with manufacturing evidence and the defendant usually has foot in mouth. Then there are the signature courtroom demonstrations.
Be sure to re-watch these programs as you can then see at even in TV programs they can sprinkle in subtle clues.
The was a mad magazine mock that had a boy scout immediately confess from the back of the courtroom upon seeing Perry mason.
Many of the subsequent programs allowed many TV actors of the time to become different characters and even replace the Burger and Tragg characters. You find yourself not only trying to outguess Mason but also saying "Hey I saw that actor in..."
Even though the characters are from Erle Stanley Gardner the actual programs are written by many different TV writers of the day.
I have on occasion read some of the Erle Stanly Gardner Mason's and they are closely related. The TV version has a few less characters and has to write in some of our favorites.
The DVD's themselves usually have four episodes with a glaring lack of the extras that are so popular nowadays. The plus is that there are no advertisements.
Childhood memories.......2007-07-04
Growing up I enjoyed Perry Mason and still watch the Hallmark movie series. Even though the shows are black and white, you don't really notice as you watch how Perry solves some of the most bizarre cases on record - like the one of the perjured parrot.
Can we get these released faster please?!.......2007-07-03
I waited for years for "Perry Mason" to be released on DVD and I'm ecstatic that Paramount Home Video has finally begun to do it! These box sets are beautiful and the remastered picture and sound quality of the show is so much better than the episodes that are broadcast on my local TV station. Now, my only request is that PHV speed up the releases. If they're going to continue with the 2 volumes per season sequence and release only 1 season per year it's going to take 9 whole years to completely release this great series. I can't wait that long! Please Paramount, how about releasing two box sets at a time, meaning two seasons per year? Universal did this with Seasons 3 and 4 of Miami Vice and it was great.
TIMELESS TV.......2007-07-02
With all of the cast excepting Della now dead, it is pleasant to return to those times. I began watching Perry Mason on TV when yet in high school and after military service and college he was yet on TV!
After purchasing the first two DVD sets can still feel happy about purchasing them, and will get this one too. I not only watch the shows but read the books, just recently finishing The Case of the Caretaker's Cat. The Persian cat of that book was named 'Clinker' but none of the TV shows, however, can be called that!
Great TV from long ago, and for me growing up in the 1950's, it's fun to revisit a world of cars, clothes, and people that other than in these shows, no longer exist. Perry and the gang are than actors and in many ways seem to have become our welcome friends.
Semper Fi.
Perry Mason --- Second Year.......2007-06-27
My wife's favorite and she can't wait until the second half of year 2 comes out. Good production values and the programs have aged well. Outstanding entertainment IF you are a fan of the series.
