Initially broadcast as a TV miniseries to go with the series of three Anthology double-CD albums, this set of eight documentary tapes has the heft and scope of one of Ken Burns's expansive projects. Still, unless you are either a historian or a truly committed fan, you'll find yourself with way more material--particularly about the Beatles' early lives as lads in Liverpool--than you'll want to watch. The documentary material is copious, including early performance films and tapes, at the point before they found their true voices. The actual Beatlemania years--beginning in 1963 and concluding in 1970--feature extensive performance films, as well as home movies and archival material. The best parts, of course, are the interviews with the Beatles themselves, who produced the entire thing. Along with reworking two previously unreleased John Lennon tracks as "new Beatles songs," the Anthology includes some unseen Lennon interview tapes so that his acerbic voice can be heard as well. This stands as a comprehensive document of that heady period, the second coming of rock & roll, as the Beatles took what Elvis had started and expanded upon it exponentially. The tapes give a solid sense of the historical context and the way these four musicians changed the world around them in the 1960s. --Marshall Fine

Excellent Investment.......2007-06-27
I love, love the Beatles, and this DVD set is awesome. I bought it as a gift for my sister, but I watch it too.
That's Entertainment!.......2007-05-22
People, please. What could be more entertaining than hours upon hours of the Beatles telling their story? I have watched this many times, and never tire of it. If you are a fan, you are missing out if you don't see this. And the bonus material is great too - Paul George and Ringo jamming and reminscing - wow!
A great bargain.......2007-05-16
This Beatles Anthology DVD set is a great bargain because when it originally came out in the mid 90's on VHS tapes it was about $120 more. I still have a catalog from then to prove it. I was very impressed with the sound quality. The best sound quality I've ever heard Beatles music presented in. Makes me wish my old Beatles CDs sounded that good. On alot of my other DVD's I have to crank the volume way up to get any decent audio. The only thing I didn't like is that during some of the songs like "Revolution" & "Hey Jude" there is talking. I'm interested in what they have to say but not during the songs. And it doesn't seem to have a feature where you can just play the music videos. But I guess it's supposed to be a documentary & not a collection of music videos. Also I seem to recall some minor scenes when I saw it on TV in 1995 that weren't on the DVD, like the reunited Beatles in the 90's admiring one of the member's fancy car.
Beatles Anthology.......2007-05-16
This was a great price for a great product. I have really enjoyed watching all the episodes and learning more about the Beatles. The interviews with each of the members help give a personal perspective to the events surrounding the Beatles' amazing popularity. A great buy!
A Must Have for Any Beatles Fan.......2007-04-23
Anthology is the history of the Beatles as told by the Beatles. It is the story of the Beatles from when they were young boys in Liverpool to when they recorded their last album, and everything in between. It is not only told through their words and interviews, but by their music, their movies and live performances, including their first concert at Shea Stadium and their appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show, just to name a few. Anthology also comes with a bonus disc of extras which includes the making of Anthology and the recording of the two latest Beatles singles, "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love". Anthology is 10 hours of pure joy for anyone who likes the Beatles. Just sit back, watch, listen and enjoy!

Product Description
SYNOPSIS: In their second feature with director Richard Lester, who oversaw the massive hit A Hard Day's Night, the Beatles again aim for a mix of goofy comedy and sterling pop music. There is slightly more of a plot this time, though it is a patently ridiculous one: a sacred ruby ring comes into Ringo's possession, attracting the unwelcome attention of an exotic religious cult and forcing the boys to go on the run. This chase narrative is thankfully never taken too seriously, serving mainly as an excuse for colorful excursions to international locations from Europe to the Bahamas. The musical numbers include such classic tunes as "Ticket to Ride," "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away," and, of course, "Help!".
DVD SPECIAL FEATURES:
Theatrical Trailer / Synopsis / Beatles Profiles.
COMPLETE SONG LIST: Help! / You're Gonna Lose That Girl / You've Got to Hide Your Love Away / Ticket to Ride / I Need You / The Night Before / Another Girl.

Help!!!.......2007-07-08
Well, I love Help! I was thrilled to get this inexpensive version which is technically well done. Sharp. Clear. Things like that.
Don't analysize this..........2007-07-07
This movie was hilarious. You have to have an appreciation for slapstick tongue in cheek humor to truly be about to enjoy this film. They are funny young men just having a good time and poking fun at absolutely everything from religion to stardom.
Sit down, kick back and laugh for awhile.
Really nice quality.......2007-06-18
Overall I was very happy with this DVD mastering. I saw absolutely no evidence that this was copied from VHS so forget the comments to that effect from one reviewer. As others have noted, the audio is excellent - clear, crisp mono, as God (and George Martin) intended. If you want the best quality mono version of the soundtrack songs, just dub the musical numbers from this disc to CD! Visual quality is very good although I would like to have seen the original widescreen ratio letterboxed. Colors are sharp and bright and short of a total remastering this as good as we're likely to get. My fear would be that the next "official" Apple reissue would substitute the stereo mixes from the LP, which would destroy the audio integrity, so get this while you can!
Great Trade Up From the Old Version..........2007-06-17
I've had "Help" on DVD for 17 years now; this version is a great upgrade! Subtitles, great sound (I have Bose 901Vs, no surround). The sound is great. Help is described by some as "best watched fast forwarded to the song scenes". Admittedly, it's a great bunch of "pre-MTV videos"! I'm a "John" fan, and he sings the first four of seven songs.
"Help" is first , great classic Beatles performance, in their last? B&W scene.
Next is "Your Going To Lose That Girl"- a fantastic "recording session" scene, great closeups of faces and guitars, nice filmography for 1965. It's worth a watch for the last line; the record producer asks "Boys, are you buzzing?" John says, "No, I'll take the car"! The Beatles were, as John stated, "smoking marijuana for breakfast" during the filming. George said they busted out laughing constantly, ruining several takes..
John plays a 12 string Hootenany in the next scene, "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away". John always hated miming songs, he deliberately made faces, scratched himself, anything for a laugh. Watch for him screwing up the scene twice. Supposedly written for Brian Epstein's life of living gay in the closet.
"Ticket To Ride", my favorite scene, is next. This video ruled MTV for some time in the mid-80s. Innovative photograhy, "Marx Brothers-like" antics and hilarious wipeouts as the Beatles attempt to ski in the Austrian Alps. It's also THE greatest song by the Beatles, in my opinion...classic drumming, guitars, vocals, harmonies, bass, lyrics.
"I Need You", George's "song" for the movie, is filmed on the Salisbury Plain with the Royal Army's Tank Corps, in sight of Stonhenge, I think. They're freezing cold-watch Ringo shiver, just like the Apple rooftop in Let It Be!
"The Night Before" finixshes the scene from above. Funny, it's Paul's first lead vocal in the film. Great bass playing and fisheye lens guitar shots! John almost gets run over by a tank. It's sad, these scenes (like he and George being "old" in the airport scene) are so different since he's dead. Rot in hell, Mark David Chapman!
"Another Girl" is next and pure Beatles fun, as they swap instruments on the Bahaman beach. John is a natural comedian, as usual. Ringo "plays" guitar too. The best part are the girls in those 1965 bikinis! They's cut "James Bond-like", since the movie's a parody of Bond films. They're still hot after all these years!
"Help" is reprised for the final scene which wraps up the silly plot. Think of the targeted age group that saw this in the theatre in '65...
The ending credits are a blast! "The Barber Of Seville" plays with the Beatles screwing around,as usual, laughing, singing, and George plugging his song! Listen to them laugh so hard they end with a collapsing gasp! The filmography, again, just during the credits, is fascinating for "it's day and age" - 42 years now.
This is one of those RARE films, it's a family film, if needed. Yeah, is's not as good as A Hard Day's Night, but it's GOOD+...and the songs are fantastic.
This turned out longer than I expected....

historical value only, yet...........2007-07-05
I had seen this many years ago so I knew what to expect - if you don't know, don't expect something like "A Hard Days Night". This is a very eccentric sales pitch for their new album at the time "Magical Mystery Tour". The credits list Ringo as the director of photography, and maybe it's true - but he's a better drummer and human being than either a director or photographer. Yet, there is much to appreciate in the historical content, and plenty to put a smile on the face of a fan. I was disappointed in the video quality, it was apparently taken from a well used and faded film. Plenty of scratches are visible, the colors are very faded, and scenes with the Beatles in white tuxes are terribly washed out. HOWEVER, if you already have everything else of theirs, you may yet enjoy some of this video. If nothing else, see where the band "Death Cab for Cutie" got their name.
All You Need Is Love!!!!!!!!!!!Step Up To The Mystry Tour!!!!!!!.......2006-08-05
As a keepsake video of The Beatles 1966 classic BBC broadcast, this digitally remastered release from Avenue One can not be beat. Keep in mind this an almost 40 year old analog video tape that it was copied from. However it was copied from the orginal master tape and as such, it's far superior to the earlier releases I've seen. So don't expect HD clearity, not by a stretch. What you do have here is a prestine copy of MMT, primarily shot from hand-held, somewhat primitive equipment, at least by today's standards.
None-the-less, there's a warmth and a subtle charm in watching the boys in one of their very last video performances. They ham it up with the same sort of wreckless abondament which won us over with on A Hard Day's Night and Help. Consider this, Magical Mystery Tour preceeded M-TV by at least twenty years and can be seen almost as a prototype of that format. Indeed further testiment to The Beatles lasting influence on the music industry and the marketing of pop culture. And finally there's the sublime soundtrack: I Am The Walrus, Your Mother Should Know, Baby You're A Rich Man, Hello Goodbye, Strawberry Fields Forever, Fool On The Hill, Penny Lane, Flying, (The Beatles one and only instumental) and George's pyscidellic sitar opus Blue Jay Way. Irresistable stuff if you consider yourself a Beatle-Maniac of any degree. You've got to love this DVD.........Afterall "All You Need Is Love"!!!!!!!!!!Step Up To The Mystry Tour!!!!!!

The Beatles - Let It Be - Limited Collector's Edition: 1 Disc 9GB Dual-Layer DVD by Audio Tape Inc.
A T.V. Special played in 1970. Originally it was entitled as 'Get Back' showing the Beatles rehearsing, jamming and performing for their new songs. This is the only documentary film released officially and was then changed to be called 'Let It Be'. It marks the ending of the career of the Beatles (John Lennon, Paul McCarthy, George Harrison, & Ringo Starr). A message about the career of the Beatles told by the Beatles themselves. This video has won the 1966 Grammy Awards for "Best Music Video, long form". The Beatles had, as Paul said at the end of the video, "united for somehow, some way". The band was filmed rehearsing and recording songs. It tried to show the creative process of making a Beatles album. But it was at that time when the Beatles were all fighting with each other, so it really showed how the Beatles were breaking up. They argue with each other and are concerned with their own individual songs, rather than the group songs. However, they weren't always fighting and it gives a look at the process of making the songs and working them so they would sound better musically. This is a documentary and it is interesting because it is real! Relive The Beatles Music, Genius, & Magic! It is now in the Public Domain (out of copyright period).

This is bootleg and a bad one at that! the whole disc is one big glitch! do not buy this ever!!

Bear in paradise whatever they are called. Get them off of Amazon. I paid over 55 bucks thinking thinking I was getting something special. Obvious bootleg. The freeking pictures and all are wrong, etc. etc. etc. These scums even lied-special book included etc. etc. Sorry folks for writing in haste and not taking the time to critique as properly but I am freaking pissed. Don't ever purchase from these bloodsuckers. Bought a couple of decently priced ones as gifts, at least they were not bootlegs and the price was decent.
repeat don;t by from bear in paradise or whatever they are called. they are criminals.
Let it be Limited Collector's Edition.......2007-04-24
This is hardly a collectors edition. It is a bootleg copy of the VHS. No other information or liner notes. Sound and picture are bad. But you get to see the Beatle's create some fine tunes. The rooftop concert is worth owning the video. Just wish I could have gotten one of better quality. 5 stars for content, 2 stars for quality of video.
quality and performance varies.......2007-04-14
i've purchased three of these (2 off of ebay and 1 here) and i can say that not all 'copies' of let it be are created equal. the best i've come across so far is the 2 disc version with all the additional footage. so if you're going to get one make sure it's that one.
shilling th ereviews.......2007-04-12
Look at the "see all my reviews" by the only reviewer to give this product 5 stars. It is hard not to get the impression that such 5* reviews are consistent with those that would have been written by the vendor offering for sale illegal bootleg copies of DVD material. As such, I do not find his/her reviews credible at all and wonder why Amazon allow them to stand.

Amazon.com essential video
This restored, animated valentine to the Beatles offers viewers the rare chance to see a work that's been substantially improved by its technical facelift, not just supersized with extra footage. Recognizing that its song-studded soundtrack alone makes Yellow Submarine a video annuity, United Artists has lavished a frame-by-frame refurbishment of the original feature, while replacing its original monaural audio tracks with a meticulously reconstructed stereo mix that actually refines legendary original album versions.
What emerges is a vivid time capsule of the late '60s and a minor milestone in animation. The music represents the quartet's zenith--Rubber Soul, Revolver, and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The story line, cobbled together by producer Al Brodax and a committee of writers, is a broad, feather-light allegory set in idyllic Pepperland, where the gentle citizens are threatened by the nasty, music-hating Blue Meanies and their surreal arsenal of henchmen, with the Beatles enlisted to thwart the bad guys. Visually, designer Heinz Edelmann mixes the biomorphic squiggles, day-glo palette, and Beardsley-esque portraits of Peter Max with rotoscoped still photographs and film; Edelmann's animated collages also nod to Andy Warhol and Magritte in properly psychedelic fashion, which works wonderfully with such terrific songs.
High orthodox Beatlemaniacs can still grouse that the animated Fab Four are (literally) flat archetypes, but that's missing the sheer bloom of the music or the giddy, campy fun of the visuals. Making sense of the story is second to submerging blissfully in the sights and sounds of this video treat. --Sam Sutherland
Customer Reviews:
Review of "Yellow Submarine" by a crew member........2007-06-16
As one of the animators who worked on the Beatles' animated epic, YELLOW SUBMARINE, I am delighted by the almost universal praise heaped on this recent DVD release of the renovated and digitally remastered version of the movie.
It is immensely satisfying to know that a whole new generation has come to discover the delights of this 1960's flower power masterpiece, and with the legendary "Hey Bulldog" sequence - deleted from all but the original British prints - reinstated in all its bizarre glory, Beatles fans can at last experience the full version of this psychedelic animated odyssey as it was originally meant to be seen.
I know I am totally biased in giving the film a 5-star rating, but I would say that the twelve months I spent working on it (during 1967-1968) was, without a doubt, the single most exciting period in my almost 50-year career in the animation business. It was made even more memorable by the fact that, during production, I became engaged to Diana, my wife of nearly 40 years, who worked on the "LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS" sequence.
The struggle to produce anything resembling a final script while production surged inexorably on past the writers towards an impossible deadline, the creative arguments, the personality clashes, the budgetary nightmares, the physical kidnapping of the film - with the whole thing being propelled by the sheer exhilaration of knowing that we were all taking part in an astonishing revolution in animated films - all made for a heady and never-to-be-repeated experience. For a detailed look behind the scenes during the making of the film, read Dr. Bob Hieronimus' "INSIDE THE YELLOW SUBMARINE" and Al Brodax's "UP PERISCOPE YELLOW".
While the authors differ on some points, both books are packed with detail and anecdotes, and the debate about who said what and who did what on YELLOW SUBMARINE seems set to continue for quite some time. But there is one undeniable fact in all of this - if producer Al Brodax hadn't stuck his neck out and taken a chance on producing an animated feature all those years ago, the phenomenon that was the YELLOW SUBMARINE would never have set sail on its fantastic voyage. For that we all owe him a vote of thanks.
Don't give it a superficial viewing.......2007-04-03
With the passage of time it's easy to forget the Beatles were once cutting edge and loved to tweak the nose of authority figures everywhere and the gentle tone of "Yellow Submarine" compared to today's animated features only emphasizes that point. At the time of "Yellow Submarine" the Beatles were at the height of their success, and while they undoubtedly wanted to send a message to authoritarian figures everywhere they didn't want to do that in a ham-fisted manner. Considering the counter-cultural wave that was about to follow, "Yellow Submarine" seems almost quaint by comparison and it moves at a considerably slower pace than modern day cineastes or casual viewers may care for.
"Yellow Submarine" depicts the conflict between the Blue Meanies (representing authoritarianism, be it Fascism, Communism, or whatever) and the peaceful residents of Pepperland. The Blue Meanies employ a means of weaponry to freeze the residents of Pepperland, leaving a sole resident to seek help via the Yellow Submarine. The set up of action, in particular, unfolds particularly slowly, giving time for the character of each Beatle to slowly be explained amid scenes of rather Peter Max inspired psychedelia. The overall effect isn't exactly trippy unless you're actually tripping I suppose. Several memorable Beatles songs are included throughout the film and at points it's almost like a precursor to music videos, but rather than enhancing the film they're more of a distraction, especially "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds."
Ultimately the Beatles arrive to save the day and the movie itself is a satire on the foolishness and limitations of authoritarianism in all its manifest forms, as well as the benefits of freedom. Some of the newer songs are a bit weak, especially "All Together Now" with its especially incongruous line about "chop the tree" which is hardly an eco-friendly lyric. Having seen it as a kid I doubtlessly enjoyed it, yet 30+ years on I could scarcely remember any details. Having seen it again I could scarcely be bothered to see it again anytime soon. I honestly couldn't recommend this except for die-hard Beatles fans, fans of animation or pyschedelia, or those looking for satirical films. "Yellow Submarine" is sadly more of a time capsule of a different time and place, when all you needed was love. It's a bit sad we've moved so far beyond that, but the message of fighting tyranny, despotism, and authoritarianism is all too appropriate today.
Out of print????.......2007-02-19
Just rented a copy of this because it's out of print! I can't believe it. These are THE BEATLES, not some jive time band. I'm not a musical marketing guy so I don't know exactly what your sales goals are to keep something like this in print, but it seems like after all of the care they put into giving this scrumptious sound, you might want to keep it in print.
Anyways...
This is good but not great stuff for me. I'm more of a Black Music fan than a Beatlemaniac. This is the first Beatles flick that I've seen. After initially resisting the Beatles due to their Motown imitator origins, I've followed the Ray Charles' of the world and taken to their superior songwriting. I've been watching a bunch of performance videos as of late and I decided to watch Yellow Submarine to see the Fab Four brought into animation interpretation light.
I dig the music. "All Together Now" is fun Paul stuff. I like the Sgt. Peppers stuff that's on the video. There are a couple of filler tracks, but on the whole the music is outstanding and I can see how Funkateers like George Clinton gain inspiration from works like Yellow Submarine. It's a short jump from Beatles vs. Meanies to Dr. Funkenstine vs. Sir Nose Devoid of Funk.
The plot for this takes on more metaphysical meat than it's willing to thoroughly digest. When they have John's character pontificate on Einstein and the Sea of Holes, I'm wishing that I saw The Phantom Tollbooth with Beatles songs for the soundtrack rather than a hodgepodge of writers trying to do justice to the trippy visions of the Revolver and Sgt. Peppers albums. I can see how the out there visions of this music would lead the Beatles to go back to basics with the upcoming White Album.
Man, I can't see how they let stuff like this go out of print, though. Maybe there's some sneaky packaging thing going on that I don't know about. Like not selling the CD any more solo and making Yellow Submarine a DVD/CD combo only for Beatles completists. Hmmmmmmm.

Words Misheard from Mrs. Malaprop.......2006-12-08
Jeremy Boo saying "...ad hoc, ad loc and *crypto quo*/so little time, so much to know." It is NOT "...crypto quo..." for those of you who missed your Latin lessons. It is "quid pro quo" which means "The concept of getting something of value in return for giving something of value." In any case Dr. Boo is quoting Latin cliches to sound more erudite and smarter than he is.
And Mrs. Malaprop..."A malapropism is an incorrect usage of a word by substituting a similar-sounding word with different meaning, usually with comic effect." Such as that famous line not by Jimi Hnedrix, "Excuse me while I kiss this guy" instead of the real lyrics "Excuse me while I kiss the sky."
Other than that, Yellow Submarine is one of those true classics that should not be missed.

Whether your intellect is completely engaged or passively detached, any viewing of Naqoyqatsi is likely to provoke a fascinating response. You can view it as a magnificent, visually stimulating music video (as critic Roger Ebert suggested you should), or in context as the third and most unsettling film in director Godfrey Reggio's "qatsi" trilogy, each titled from the Hopi language, and preceded by Koyaanisqatsi and Powaqqatsi ("Life out of Balance" and "Life in Transformation," respectively). "Life as War" is the translation of this film's title, and Reggio's theme is not one of conventional warfare, but of daily life as warfare in the age of rapidly evolving technology. The entire trilogy views humankind as a blight on the pristine nature of Earth, but here the theme is taken to its inevitable extreme: a constant flow of new and archival images--manipulated with solarization, digital enhancements, thermal effects, 2-D and 3-D animation, etc.--combine to convey athletic and military regimentation, culminating in the doomsday flowering of missiles, rockets, and all varieties of nuclear weaponry. The cumulative effect, when combined with Philip Glass's mesmerizing score (his best of the trilogy, with cello solos by Yo-Yo Ma) is one of doom-laden portent, but, as Stephen Holden observed in the New York Times, the film is also arrestingly beautiful as it weaves its hypnotic, apocalyptic spell. For those who wish to delve further, Reggio, Glass, and editor/visual designer Jon Kane provide valuable insight in a bonus panel discussion. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Miramax Home Entertainment and Oscar(R)-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh (Best Director, TRAFFIC, 2000) present NAQOYQATSI ("Life As War"), from filmmaker Godfrey Reggio, in collaboration with composer Phillip Glass, whose original score features renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma. In this cinematic concert -- the concluding film of the Qatsi Trilogy preceded by the critically acclaimed KOYAANISQATSI ("Life Out Of Balance"), and POWAQQATSI ("Life In Transformation") -- mesmerizing images reanimated from everyday reality, then visually altered with state-of-the-art digital techniques, chronicle the shift from a world organized by the principles of nature to one dominated by technology, the synthetic, and the virtual. Extremes of intimacy and spectacle, tragedy and hope, fuse in a tidal wave of visuals and music, giving rise to a unique artistic experience that reflects Reggio's visions of a brave new globalized world.
Customer Reviews:
Music video or feature film?.......2007-05-18
Having read some other reviews here, I have to agree with their basic criticism. Then again, perhaps this film should not so much be critisised as a feature film, but as a music video, or in fact a video installation that took the wrong door. Watching this as a feature film is unbearable for anyone with a sense of plot. Also, it has so many flashy effects that there should be a seizure warning on the package. But the film certainly goes well as a background for Phil Glass' very enjoyable music, or for running it in the background during a weird, geeky party you are having in an abandoned Detroit warehouse...
very, very disappointing... and bad.......2007-01-23
The first film in this trilogy, Koyaanisqatsi, is a classic.
The second, Powaqatsi, is not as good but still worth watching.
Naqoyaqaatsi, to quote some other reviewers, is just 'a mishmash of computer-treated footage, signifying nothing'... 'all quite forgettable'... except that the feeling of disillusionment and disappointment is hard to forget... The absence of Ron Fricke and his incredible cinematography that mad the other films so great stops this from even being interesting.
Don't waste your time.
Amazing........2007-01-12
If you have not watched this yet and have any inclination to, PLEASE DO. It is not a "movie with a plot" so to speak, but a film/documentation of society and culture. I love it. (But watch Kooyanisqatsi first. ) In comparison, it is what Kooyannisqatsi would have been had it been made 20 years later. I think it's brilliant.
Very disappointing end to the series.......2006-12-13
The first film in this trilogy, Koyaanisqatsi, is a classic, and features what is possibly the best score Philip Glass ever wrote for anything.
The second, Powaqatsi, is not as good but still worth watching.
This third installment offers none of the thought-provoking imagery of the first two films. It's just a mishmash of computer-treated footage, signifying nothing, and all quite forgettable. I wonder what went wrong?
Don't waste your time.
Botched Opportunity.......2006-12-02
First, let me say, I LOVE Koyaanisqatsi, the original film in this trilogy. Koyaanisqatsi is a true visual poem that tells a straight forward story about what we humans are doing to the earth.
The second film in the trilogy, Powaqqatsi, wasn't as good as the first but it was still fairly understandable as a critique of how humans exploit one another.
Naqoyqatsi could have been the best in the series since it had ample opportunity to show us the horrors of war. Instead, it comes off as a sophomoric exercise in video experimentation, nothing more. If not for Philip Glass' music, I would not have given this film any rating at all.
I write this criticism in hopes that Godfrey Reggio sees it. He should pull this travesty off the market and reshoot the entire film with stronger footage showing us, as clearly as he did with "Koy", why war (the topic of "Naq") is so horrific. If you want an effective critique of violence, try "Clockwork Orange". Naqoyqatsi is simply a mess.

Product Description
The Beatles' appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964 and 1965 helped catapult the band to stateside fame and fortune. Their debut performance alone was viewed by 73 million viewers. This collection compiles four full episodes containing 20 songs in total, and including other guests like Soupy Sales, Cab Calloway, and Cilla Black; and even commercial breaks. Shown in their original black and white, these episodes convey the feeling of a bygone era, while placing some of The Beatles' early appearances in a framework that shows how they eventually exploded as one of the most influential rock bands of all time. The four Beatles, with their fluffy mop-head haircuts and little black suits, look like fresh-faced kids as they stride nervously onto the stage in their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, February 9, 1964. Met by screaming, lovestruck fans--mostly teenage girls dressed in clean-cut sweaters with their hair curled and combed--The Beatles launch into a trio of carefully played songs including "All My Loving," "Till There Was You," and "She Loves You." The next two weeks, on February 16 and February 23, 1964, they reappear on the Ed Sullivan Show, each time to the same unabashed hero worship, performing hits like "Twist and Shout" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand." The last episode on this fascinating collection, September 12, 1965, shows how the band has changed after a year and a half--with longer hair, a loose and rebellious spirit, and a bolder stage presence. Through these classic television episodes, viewers of all eras can join the fab four as they begin their ascent into the musical history books, courtesy of the Ed Sullivan Show.

A Simpler Time?.......2007-05-13
In 1964 there was no cable or DVD's, television sets were black and white, consisted of three networks and was probably limited to one set per home. When the Beatles were featured on the Ed Sullivan Show in February of that year most viewers had never even heard their music. These DVD's not only show the Beatles performances from four shows but you see four entire programs, commercials and all. It is a great slice of Americana, a look back to a simpler time when television viewing was a family activity.
The Beatles went on to be the most important and successful entertainers of our time. I wonder how difficult it would be to present them to such a wide audience in this day and age and if it would have altered their success? We clearly are fortunate that it happened the way it did.
THANKS TO ED SULLIVAN, THE BEATLES SAVED ROCK N' ROLL........2007-04-13
I will be writing a review on the legendary historic DVD classic shows entitiled "THE FOUR COMPLETE HISTORIC ED SULLIVAN SHOWS FEATURING THE BEATLES." This legendary historic DVD was released in 2003 by Sofa Entertainmaent. Please remember that these historic shows were recorded in the 60's with primitive technology as compared to today's recording technology standards. These priceless jewels were recorded live in Black & White. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary historic treasure or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.
THE BEATLES will forever always be remembered in our hearts as THE FAB FOUR comprising of JOHN PAUL GEORGE and RINGO. In the roaring 60's, THE BEATLES made so much noise musically as a result of the healthy lungs of Beatlemania that THE BEATLES were becoming bigger than life itself. Who would have ever believed that a simple Rock n' Roll band from Liverpool, England like THE BEATLES could even be as popular as Jesus. (That's right, I even said it.) THE BEATLES music was still extremely popular in England but the band's popularity and musical impact was being heard the world over resulting in sneaking its way into many countries such as the United States. THE BEATLES have conquered England, it was now time to conquer the world. Due to the extreme popularity and demand for more imported copies of THE BEATLES 45 RPM hit single "I Want To Hold Your Hand," BEATLES Manager Brian Epstein thought of an ingenius idea of taking his British act THE BEATLES over to America to see if THE BEATLES could conquer America. And so Brian and THE BEATLES flew over to America anticipating no reception of any kind. WRONG! When THE BEATLES landed at JFK airport in New York City, it was MADNESS! Thousands and thousands of screaming fans were everywhere at the airport screaming and waiting to get a glimpse of THE BEATLES. When THE BEATLES arrived, the screams got louder. THE BEATLES were totally unprepared for the unbelievable reception. Legend has it that THE BEATLES actually thought that the President of The United States was also at the airport at the same time. Believe it or not, before stepping foot on American soil, THE BEATLES were America's number one band. THE BEATLES press conference at JFK airport is the true stuff that is made of legend. THE BEATLES were so witty and funny that the press were just having a field day as well as the fans. Mr. Ed Sullivan must have seen all of this coverage on TV because like ELVIS, Sullivan wanted THE BEATLES on his show. And so it happened, which brings me to the 2-DVD set Ed Sullivan collection featuring THE BEATLES that I'm about to review for you now. THE BEATLES appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show four times, two of them setting audience attendence records as well as viewer TV audience records. The dates of these four shows were recorded on 9 February 1964, 16 February 1964, 23 February 1964 and 12 September 1965. The most memorable of all these shows would be the legendary historic 9 February 1964 which introduced THE BEATLES to America. An estimated 73 million viewers watched this event which was at that time, the most watched TV event in television history. Believe it or not, during that one hour telecast of The Ed Sullivan show, NOT ONE CRIME WAS COMMITTED IN NEW YORK CITY. In my opinion, these legendary BEATLES performances on the Ed Sullivan Show is a true testament of four extremely talented young men that were without a doubt, musical genius'. THE BEATLES not only saved Rock n' Roll, but they became extremely patriotic as spokesman as to what the true spirit of Rock n' Roll should be like. These 2-DVD priceless jewels is a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary band and a fine American like Mr. Ed Sullivan that were definitely truly indeed, far ahead of their time. And now without further delay, it gives me great pleasure in taking you back in time to the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City on 9 February 1964, 16 February 1964 (This show was telecasted live in miami, Florida), 23 February 1964 and 12 September 1965 where THE BEATLES are about to take the stage and make music history.
DVD ONE begins with the legendary historic 9 February 1964 show in which THE BEATLES take the stage for the first time and deliver the refreshing and innocent song "All My Loving," the slow and beautifully well sung number "Till There Was You" and the early BEATLES Rocker "She Loves You." THE BEATLES would take the stage for the second half of the show and sing one of the first early Lennon/McCartney compositions "I Saw Her Standing There" and the forever popular BEATLES trademark song "I Want To Hold Your Hand."
The 16 February 1964 Ed Sullivan Show was telecasted live in Miami, Florida and takes right where the 9 February 1964 Show left off. THE BEATLES would again, play before another record setting audience as well as the TV audience. THE BEATLES would waste no time and begin the electrifying song "She Loves You," the slow and beautiful "This Boy" and the uplifting "All my Loving." THE BEATLES would return for the second half of the show and begin by playing the early Rocker "I Saw Her Standing There," the true and breathtaking song "From Me To You" and the ever popular BEATLES song "I Want To Hold Your Hand."
DVD TWO begins with the 23 February 1964 Ed Sullivan Show in which THE BEATLES deliver another great performance. THE BEATLES begin with the ISLEY BROTHERS classic, the groundbreaking early Rocker "Twist & Shout" and a different version consisting of George playing the lead guitar riff in place of John's Harmonica "Please Please Me." THE BEATLES would return for the second half of the show and sing the unbelievable "I Want To Hold Your hand."
Over a year would pass before THE BEATLES would make their final appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show on 12 September 1965. THE BEATLES would take the stage and begin their segment with the incredible "I Feel Fine," the Little Richard sounding Rocker "I'm Down" and a great song sung by the one and only Ringo, "Act Naturally." THE BEATLES would take the stage in the second half of the show and sing the blistering early hard Rocker "Ticket To Ride," the most beautiful and well orchestrated version of this song ever, "Yesterday" and the blasting mellow Rocker "Help."
May I also add that THE BEATLES performances on all four Ed Sullivan Shows is exactly the kick that Rock n' Roll desperately needed in order to carry and live on. THE BEATLES were definitely red hot and on fire during all four of these performances. Thank God someone took care of these legendary historic taped shows to the best of their abilities so we would all one day see what the real true fuss of THE BEATLES was really all about.
Overall, this is one great 2-DVD set collection worth seeking further research into and checking out especially if you are a hardcore diehard BEATLES fan or a devout music collector. I cannot picture anyone not knowing who THE BEATLES are so I will just say that everybody all over the world should own the whole BEATLES collection and catalog. In my opinion, OWNING THE BEATLES COMPLETE COLLECTON IS A NECESSITY. THE BEATLES legendary historic performances on four Ed Sullivan Shows are all part of music history as well as American history.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary historic 2-DVD set collection to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal DVD music collection. This priceless treasure has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come resulting in recruiting more new BEATLES fans. This is one great collection that all music fans as well as devout music collectors would not want to be without.
In closing, THE BEATLES would make many successful movies establishing them as comedians to be compared to the comedy team of The Marx Brothers. THE BEATLES would continue their rule and reign over Rock n' Roll and its world for many more years till the day they broke up in 1970. I guess you can say that when THE BEATLES broke up, a large part of Rock n' Roll died with them forever. The contributions and accomplishments that THE BEATLES made and gave to Rock n' Roll speaks for itself and has never been matched nor will they ever be denied. Millions of dollars were being offered by some promoters in hopes of reuniting THE BEATLES for one concert. Depite all of the efforts by promoters, THE BEATLES would never reunite again. With the deaths of John Lennon and George Harrison, a BEATLES reunion now is impossible. THE BEATLES received the highest ultimate honor in being inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. With that in mind, THE BEATLES have forever left their mark in Rock n' Roll history as well as world history and will never ever be forgotten. So here's to you FAB FOUR, the late great John, Paul, the late great George and Ringo. Thanks for the great memories. JOHN LENNON LIVES. GEORGE HARRISON LIVES. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE BEATLES FOREVER. R.I.P. JOHN LENNON and GEORGE HARRISON. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.
Not enough stars.......2007-03-26
I'm sure some folks will not agree with with me and thats ok. I think there are not enough stars to rate this. Three big reasons:
1) The Beatles
2) The other acts
3) Commercials
Trip down memory lane for me back to grade school. And I kept hearing my Dad [...] about the "long hair", when 4 years later he would have bought me a car if I wore my hair that short.
What a gem. At least for me.
4.5 stars for 4 stars.......2007-01-30
I must be gettin' old - Mitzi Gaynor dancing, Steve Rossi singing, and Soupy Sales doing the Mouse seemed, for a brief interval, just as good as the Fab Four - The Group Formerly Known As the Silver Beatles. Hey George, what's with the staring into the camera?
Don't worry, folks, as good as the above three were, and as bad as some others were (Comedians Dave Barry and Morty Gunty had the kind of awful material that no consideration for the period, their presumptive target audience, etc., or other factors could possibly compensate), the four shows (shown as complete telecasts!) have a permanent place in history: It was alot more than rock and roll with a new twist (sorry...). This was the beginning of "Rock", a progressive, intellectual approach to records and concerts: a group (or solo artist) absolutely had to *progress* on the next project - no repetitions! It's interesting to reflect that at least in my circle of friends and acquaintances it wasn't called "Rock and Roll" - it was "The Beatles" - it was, simply, *new music*.
I found the format, the quality, the packaging, to be fine, and exceptionally low-priced! The Beatles' performances are excellent, except on the Miami show, when it seemed they were a bit cramped on the set and the mix was off - here Sir Paul keeps it all together with his genius: singing his head off and playing bass like there's no tomorrow.
Historians might want to look for the Presley/Sullivan package for perspective. One main difference with all due respect to the forerunner: the Beatles' managed to keep *the music* up front.
Historical value, but poor image quality.......2006-05-14
It's very nice to go back to those exciting years with this DVD, but they could have done a better job with the image digitalization. There is much better image quality bootleg DVD's out there with virtually the same content. I think fans deserve the best for the money they spend and unfortunately, this is not the case.

Any fan of Richard Lester's A Hard Day's Night won't want to miss the documentary The Beatles: The First U.S. Visit by Albert and David Maysles. The Maysles brothers were given extraordinary access to the Beatles during their first trip to the U.S., in February 1964, for several concerts and their seminal first appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show. Like Hard Day's Night, which came out later that year, this film (also known as What's Happening! The Beatles in the U.S.A.) shows lots of spontaneous cheekiness with the press and fans; the Beatles' wide-eyed bemusement at the hysteria they caused; as much cutting up as a tiny hotel room allows; and even specific scenes--goofing off on a commuter train, mod dancing in a nightclub--that would later appear in Lester's film. The only thing missing is Paul's grandfather.
The performance segments alone are a must for fans. The three Ed Sullivan appearances show a great cross section of their hits at the time, including "All My Loving," "I Saw Her Standing There," a beautifully delivered "This Boy" by John Lennon, and a wobbly "I Saw Her Standing There" so out of tune George Harrison nearly cracks up as he listens to Lennon and Paul McCartney struggle for harmony. The blurry, badly mic'd footage of the concert at the Washington Coliseum shows the Beatles acting as their own roadies, setting up their instruments; the platform Ringo Starr drums on lurches ominously with each downbeat. It was a more innocent, exuberant time, to be sure, and this sweet documentary lets the Beatles phenomenon speak for itself. --Anne Hurley

You Need this Dvd !.......2007-05-21
This is the original film documentry by the Maysles brothers, of the Beatles' first American visit. When the boys came to our shores in February 1964, the Maysles were commisioned to follow them around with cameras, detailing their every move during the entire brief tour. The result is now on dvd, fully remastered and really fun fun fun to watch.
A visual diary of Beatlemania unfolding for the first time, in America, the cameras follow them from the minute they descend the steps of the aircraft until they ascend again. In keeping with the cinema verite' style, there is no narration, only diologue, and events captured as they unfold. The camera captures the fan hysteria at the airport, in front of the Plaza Hotel, and of course in the Ed Sullivan studio, during the live taping of their historic appearances. It even eavesdrops on Murray the K as he counts down on his WINS radio show, the minutes to their arrival. But of course, 99% of this film is the Beatles themselves, just being themselves. (Or as natural as you can be if you have a camera in your face all the time.) You see them in the car going to the hotel, in the hotel , in Central Park, at the Peppermint Lounge,... everywhere, including their excursion to Miami Beach.
It's fun to note their excitement as they witness their impact on America, and realize that they are the first British act to actually win the hearts of this big, intimidating country. Their excitement is obvious and unrehearsed, especially Paul's. When I first watched this dvd, I hadn't seen The Beatles for a long time, and I was so overjoyed to see and hear them again. I had forgotten how young they were. I was also surprised that Paul comes across as the most natural, and the one who wears his heart on his sleeve (so to speak) more than the others. He can barely contain his excitement, and happiness in this film, and he doesn't bother trying. I was really surprised by how funny he is. In almost every scene, he is doing a funny accent or impersonation of someone, and he's really good. People seem to associate John with this sort of humor, but Paul was just as funny. John on the other hand, plays the cool man, putting a check on his excitement. In the car going to the hotel, John and Ringo look on with affectionate amusement as Paul, barely able to contain himself, practically bounces out of his seat, waving a transister radio around. George and Ringo are seen doing some slapstick on the train going to Washington D.C. but it isn't as funny as the droll one liners that both of them became known for as time went on. And in this particular film, they are not as fun to watch as dear Paul...and ultra cool John. The extras offered with this treasure of a dvd are also worth it. They contain out takes from the original film which include more clowning around, more McCartney craziness, ( in one scene with Murray the K, and later by the Plaza elevator, Paul almost seems, dare I say it,...high.) They had just left the Peppermint Lounge so who knows? Also of interest, are interviews on the street with snobby music students as they pontificate about the Beatles. If you're over a certain age (or you've seen the movie, Animal House), you know the type. Those early 60's folky type girls, with long hair, very well spoken, intellectual, and talking about how they don't normally listen to pop music, only folk and classical. Yeah yeah yeah. Anyway this is a very important addition to the Beatlephile library and I cherish it for it's historical and entertainment value. You will too.
Back in the day............2007-03-25
Awesomely nostalgic. Lots of stuff that you most likely haven't seen before. Definitely recommended for anyone who lived the experience "back in the day"
The Beatles - The First U.S. Visit.......2007-02-10
This was great! We all loved it! If you are a Beatle fan, it is a must.
A Must See For Even The Casual Beatles Fan.......2006-09-18
The Beatles' First U.S. Visit is, behind "The Compleat Beatles" and their self-produced "Anthology", the most entertaining and revealing about this musical group of four doing what they were born to do, on the way to the crest of their musical creativity. The performances on the American "Ed Sullivan Show" are entertaining for fans and interesting as historical documents, but the true gems are the sequences of non-performance documentary footage of all four members of the group, Brian Epstein, and (briefly, hush-hush ;)) Cynthia Lennon. This footage provides a window into The Beatles' emotional state during this life-altering point in their career. They balance organized professionalism (largely achieved by Brian Epstein, often under-appreciated in that he was managing a musical act achieving unprecedented popularity with no precedented business or professional model) with their excitement of their success in America. Then and now, largely the Holy Grail of success in entertainment. Paul, as would seem to be his role in their entire career together, acts as a conduit between George, John, Ringo and their handlers, like encouraging Ringo to pack his suitcase thouroughly in a "mother hen" voice. Watching them listen to themselves on the radio in America, seeing footage of car-mobbing people from the INSIDE of their car, seeing John tease instrumental DJ Murray The K (none the wiser) with pervy English slang, and The "Ed Sullivan" performances themselves is priceless. Though by February 1964 they were well versed in Hotel Room culture, their upbeat moods reveal their happiness (and reported surprise) at their reception from the moment they stepped off the trans-Atlantic airplane. Seeing this week of pivotal events in rock n' roll history from is a wonderful peek behind the Beatles' curtain on par with their "Anthology" and not to be missed by any casual or greater fan. Probably, if purchased, one of the Beatles-related home media films you will find yourself repeat watching more than others. Well shot by the Maysles brothers, directed and edited. Highly recommended.
Really great stuff.......2006-03-22
This is a great documentary that a fan can watch over and over again. Although my favourite Beatles' era is their middle period (RS through MMT), followed by their late period (1968 to the end), there's a charm and sweetness to their early years as well, even though their songs were more lightweight and poppish. They also looked so alike in this period, and it's charming to see how naturally they conducted themselves in front of the camera, just four innocent boys who had recently made it big and were having a great time on their first visit to America (although George had already been on his own in 1963 to visit his sister). Nothing was faked or staged, and nothing is boring either. The wit and charm was just so natural. The documentary of outtakes is also very good, and serves to give a fuller picture of what went on during the filming.
However, as others have said, this documentary contains footage of their performances on 'The Ed Sullivan Show' and at the Washington Coliseum, footage which is already available on other DVDs (although since I'm not one to nitpick over minor technical details in lieu of the big picture, I won't go into which has better audio or visual quality). It seems as though they could have put in the unused scene they shot when they went into the nearest apartment to watch the show with a family, instead of putting in footage already available elsewhere. I also found the audio commentary to be rather lacking. There were way too many long pauses and not nearly enough comments or observations. How hard could it have been to fill up the nearly 90 minutes with practically nonstop comments and observations, particularly when we're dealing with The Beatles?

After the worldwide success of A Hard Day's Night, the Beatles and director Richard Lester reunited for a follow-up film, Eight Arms to Hold You. Well, that wasn't the final title; a pleading Lennon-McCartney tune provided the catchier handle: Help! A loose semispoof of the globe-trotting James Bond pictures, Help! has always been considered a somewhat disorganized comedown from its predecessor; but it presents "the famous Beatles" even more clearly as the English cousins of the Marx Brothers. The plot has an Eastern religious cult declaring that the new ring on Ringo's finger is the key element in a human sacrifice; they will stop at nothing to obtain it. Meanwhile, a mad scientist (crazed Victor Spinetti, who also appeared in A Hard Day's Night and Magical Mystery Tour) believes that if he has the ring, he could--dare we say it?--rule the world. The songs, including "Ticket to Ride" and "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away," are filmed with gleeful ingenuity, in locations such as the Bahamas, an Austrian ski resort, and the Salisbury Plain. The relentless nonsense becomes nearly the equivalent of a swinging-'60s Alice in Wonderland: for instance, Paul shrinks to the size of a gum wrapper, John fishes a season ticket out of his soup, George wears a top hat on the ski slopes, the lads sing the "Ode to Joy" to a lion. Oh, and the film is dedicated to Elias Howe, "who in 1846 invented the sewing machine." Brilliant. --Robert Horton

DIVERTIDISIMA!!!.......2007-07-03
THE BEATLES' LEGEND CONTINUES WITH THE FOUR LADS THAT SHOOK THE WORLD........2007-06-12
I will be writing a review on the legendary historic landmark Rock n' Roll movie simply entitled "HELP" starring the FAB FOUR themselves, AND STILL the greatest band music ever produced. I give you THE PRIDE OF ENGLAND and BRITAIN'S MOST FAVORITE SONS OF THEM ALL, T-H-E B-E-A-T-L-E-S! "HELP" was originally released in theaters in 1965 by United Artists and on DVD in 1997 by MPI Home Video. May I also add that this particular DVD release is a great DVD recording and is not a sloppy recording off a VHS tape. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary historic landmark film or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.
What can I possibly say about THE BEATLES that hasn't already been said? Like the review I recently wrote on the film "A HARD DAYS NIGHT," THE BEATLES will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for composing and recording Rock's ALL-TIME MOST sacred anthems ever. THE BEATLES will also forever be remembered as being THE GREATEST BAND MUSIC EVER PRODUCED. 1965 was a great year for THE BEATLES. THE BEATLES would be awarded as recipients of the Members of The British Empire by the Queen of England. THE BEATLES would began their 1965 World Tour to highly critically acclaim. The climax of the successful 1965 World Tour would be the legendary historic landmark concert at New York's Shea Stadium on 15 August 1965. This legendary concert was the first of its kind ever and would mark the first time that any band ever performed in a stadium. (No disrespect to ELVIS but not even ELVIS did that.) But before the 1965 World Tour would begin, THE BEATLES were on location to film another movie for their loyal fans. Originally called "EIGHT ARMS TO HOLD YOU," the film would be changed to "HELP." Following the release and extreme success of 1964's mega hit Rock n' Roll movie "A HARD DAYS NIGHT," THE BEATLES were so thrilled and delighted that their movie did so well at the box office that it was only natural that the band would film another by popular demand. THE BEATLES, true to their words, did not disappoint their loyal fans either and would deliver "HELP" as another present as a token of their appreciation.
"HELP," in itself alone, is another great BEATLES film that also contains THE BEATLES' magical music that speaks for itself. "HELP" contains, once again, THE BEATLES as their normal witty and funny charming selves which alone, makes this film great to watch. "HELP" also contains groundbreaking live film and video performances of the magnificent theme song "Help," the mild Rocker "The Night Before," the beautifully slow romantic acoustic "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away," George Harrison's masterpiece Rocker "I Need You," the incredible soothing mellow Rocker "Another Girl," the blistering Rocker "Ticket To Ride" and the breathtaking Rocker "You're Gonna Lose That Girl."
I can take all day and tell you about the whole concept and plot of this legendary historic landmark film, but I do not want to spoil it for all of the new BEATLES fans. I would definitely hope that all of you would go out and purchase this film and see it for yourself. Doing this, I feel confident that by letting you be the judge for yourselves that you will fall in love with this film as I have. I hope all of you will purchase this great film, this is one great film that no BEATLES fan should be without.
In closing, all I will say is that THE BEATLES are the greatest band that music ever produced. The accomplishments, contributions and achievements that THE BEATLES have given us speak for itself and will never be forgotten or denied. THE BEATLES are not just another one of Rock Royalty, THE BEATLES DEFINE AND ARE ROCK ROYALTY. THE BEATLES have received the highest ultimate honor possible by being inducted as members of the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. THE BEATLES will forever live in all of our hearts as those four witty and funny young men from Liverpool, England who call themselves John Paul George and Ringo. The critics were truly right when they said that THE BEATLES were the "FOUR LADS THAT SHOOK THE WORLD!" In my opinion, that is definitely a very appropriate statement to make. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE BEATLES FOREVER! R.I.P. John Lennon (1940-1980) and George Harrison (1943-2001). Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.
The Night Before and Another Girl.......2007-04-26
The singing scenes of this movie are worth remembering and each time you see them, these guys glisten. Theres George Harrison singing "I Need You" very well. This is definitely a very unserious movie but much of it a classic to keep. "Another Girl" belongs to Paul McCartney, he sings it way cool and draws the line. Ringo is royal to the beat. John Lennon is naughty and inquisitive. These guys never let me down. They're just a downright great band and fascinating!
An Underrated Classic.......2007-02-16
This spoof of James Bond is errie to watch in this post 9/11 world. The story of the death cult willing to take down an icon of western civilization to fulfill its ritual seems prophetic in retrospect. The scene with Leo McKern as the cult leader talking theology with the Anglican priest as an equal says much about the state of modern western civilization.
ITS THE BEATLES!!!.......2007-02-06
IF YOU ARE A BOOMER AND LOVE THE BEATLES, YOU WILL LOVE THIS. THE MUSIC IS THE BEST PART. THE SECOND IS THAT YOU GET TO LOOK AT THESE WONDERFUL GUYS DOING PRANKS AND ANTICS THAT ARE LIGHT-HEARTED AND IT MAKES YOU FEEL
AS IF YOU COULD GO BACK TO THE 60'S. SIT BACK AND ENJOY.

Good but not as good as everyone raves here........2007-04-24
Having purchased nearly everything Beatle related out there, I can tell you that this is a good DVD, but not great. Let me put it to you this way, if you have the Anthology DVD set, think of this as the bonus features for it. Many of the same interviews are duplicated in this DVD from the Anthology but most are extended so you get to see more of the interview that the Anthology cut away from.
If you're a Beatles nut, this is excellent. If you're a casual Beatles fan, this is not for you, the Anthology is. As for the interviews on this DVD, be aware there aren't that many. It's not like the an hour of back-to-back interview/news footage. In fact, most of the DVD is just file footage as a narrator talks to take up some time and space.
I give this DVD 4 stars. It's more like 3 1/2. If you're a Beatles enthusiast, I would try to rent it first because I don't really believe you'll want to watch this over and over again.
Love It! Very Interesting!.......2007-04-03
This DVD is wonderful.Filled with footage of interviews, press conferences, etc. Some of them pretty rare. Some are included in Anthology but they were edited down. Here they are shown more complete ,maybe even in thier entirety. The video is excellent.Great preservation job.The only disappoinment is,and others have said this, that there is no Beatles music or concert footage.Guess they had problems with getting permission.Instead you hear this generic,psuedo-rock,muzak throughout. The footage makes up for that however. An interesting addition is the Feb.1964 Heathrow Airport press conference when the boys returned from America.Unlike Anthology, here is shown a much longer, uncut version. Not very good for Paul because he seems to either fart or burp(you can't tell which)while answering a question.Very surprising and funny. The best part that stands out in my mind,is a very long expose' on the Jesus controversy.A British reporter is seen in America interviewing southern, teenagers in a record store. One can't decide whether she likes the group anymore because she's just so hurt by what they said, and another can't wait to start burning all of his Beatle records.Strange and riveting stuff. He goes on to interview the record shop owner then the DJ who started the controversy.During the interview the DJ says three times that he doesn't know if "they" (The Beatles)are black or white. So I guess in addition to being an incredibly cranky, creep of a stuffed shirt,he is also... NEAR SIGHTED.The British reporter finishes his expose' with a lengthy interview in what looks like a bathroom of all places, with the Beatles.John and Paul dominate with their views. It's interesting to note the change in the boys from 1964 to 1966.The biggest change is in Paul.In 1964 he is very much a young boy excited by fame, giddy almost, and charmingly unsophisticated.By 1966,he has turned into a serious, somewhat jaded, seasoned celebrity.Actually they all undergo this change but it's very obvious in Paul. This video actually covers their entire career from 1963 to 1970 with a voice over telling the story.Having been a fan for 37 years,I mentally blocked out the voice over but even if you know nothing about the fabs, you probably don't need it.You should just read the Anthology and buy the accompanying DVD boxed set and you're good to go.Then buy this DVD.
Undeniably great footage.......2007-01-06
I purchased this DVD basely solely on the positive reviews posted here. Along with the others, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the footage shown, much of it highly unusual. There were several undeniably rare clips, especially of Ringo in 1964 and 1965. Even long-time Beatle collectors will find new material and be over the moon about it.
However, it must be pointed out that in one hour of footage, the actual rare clips only total about 10 minutes. Much of the DVD is taken up with repeticious audience shots, screaming girls, KKK protesters and various other people not connected to the Beatles. There is no footage of the Beatles performing, merely interviews. But those 10 minutes will knock your socks off, especially the 1966 interview where John and Paul address the verboten subject of the Vietnam war while George and Ringo sit in the background, happily stoned out of their minds.
The "bonus features" are also weak. They consist merely of the identical interviews which were shown in the feature film. It's really superfluous and unnecessary. The interviews also stop suddenly in late 1966, with the exception of a brief clip of John and Yoko at their bed in, and of Paul and Linda after their wedding ceremony. That interview is extremely rare!
For anyone who is looking for the unusual in Beatles material, this will please you immensely. There are some weaknesses, but they're a minimal distraction. This is a must have for Beatle fanatics.
Crikey...it's GOOD!.......2006-08-12
Of all the low-budget "unauthorized" DVD's on the Beatles cluttering the market only this and "Fun With The Fab Four" are worth picking up. The producers of this DVD did a very smart thing by assembling as much BBC and newsreel footage of the Beatles as they could and presenting it chronologically as a kind of diary of events. Taken in this context, the viewer actually gets a feel for the hectic schedule the Beatles had to maintain and the accompanying footage really does tell a fascinating story. I've seen most of this footage a zillion times over in various documentaries (even the Beatles' own "Anthology) but the presentation here is first rate and makes for compelling viewing no matter how many times you've seen the clips. I should add that there is footage I've never seen anywhere else on this DVD and you'll be as pleasantly surprised even if you're a big Beatles fan. The extras include a full uncut 1966 BBC documentary on the "bigger than Jesus" controversy which is worth the price of this DVD alone.
A Pleasant Surprise.......2006-06-04
This DVD is one of those little, unknown, "Beatle-Surprises" that pop up once in a blue moon (with the upcoming CirqueduSoliel Soundtrack coming up as the "next-big-thing")... I consider myself to be quite the Beatles' completionist and I had never seen the majority of these interviews in their entirety and much less in such pristine quality... As stated by other reviewer; A must-have! ... Worth the price of admission alone is the lengthy Bonus-Feature with everything and more concerning "We're More Popular than Jesus" remark... Watching those teenagers be interviewed in a record shop was a major nostalgia trip (to see those walls adorned with the "latest releases" like in the olden days!)... Get this one!
