Bad Religion: Along the Way is a vigorous account of the seminal punk band's swing through Germany during its acclaimed, 1989 Suffer Tour. Interspersing low-definition video footage from multiple dates (often within the same song, thus explaining lead vocalist Greg Graffin's many changes of shirts), Along the Way showcases the then-10-year-old, ever-changing group at a creative peak and featuring at least three original members. Guitarist (and founder of Epitaph Records) Brett Gurewitz leads the charge on an ironically bright-eyed "Suffer," and thrusts the playful, smart "Doing Time" into an impressive feedback maw. While stage-diving fans bop around an unflappable Graffin, the band rolls out some of its most impressive, if lyrically ponderous, material, including the epic "Latch Key Kids" and the pop-laced "Along the Way." This DVD works in three short breaks between songs for quickie interviews, including one in which Graffin, on his Ph.D track at the time, compares performing to teaching. --Tom Keogh

3 out of 5 stars If you are addicted to Bad Religion..........2007-02-23

If you are addicted to Bad Religion, you need this dvd. It gives a great look at what their shows were like in the late 1980's. It is well recorded and includes their best songs from "How Could Hell Be Any Worse", "Back To The Known", and "Suffer". Many of these songs aren't played live anymore. However, Bad Religion recorded many incredible records after Suffer and you won't find a single one of those songs included on this DVD. Unless you are only into Bad Religions early music or you can't get enough of the band, the 2006 DVD "Live at the Palladium" is a much more complete representation of the band's like show.

OK I'm a 30 year old Bad Religion fan, and can relate to Greg's interview when he talks about the older crowd at the shows. This DVD rocks, simply put. It's pure Bad Religion during their peak! Lots of good live footage of low-key venues. Some insightful interviews with the band members. Audio is great quality. At first I was dissappointed with the clips from different shows pasted together for each song. But reviewing the DVD soon set me straight - it still rocks. Any true BR fan will love this one.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-06-25

OK first of all, I saw someone saying that the DVD was just pieces of various shows cut and put together. I agree with this (I don't mind it) but I have to say that the VHS version is like that too. They didn't rip you off by doing that on the DVD. Both versions are the same. And besides, the audio is all from the same show in Bremen. Quit complaining, you have classic BR performances for 15 bucks.

2 out of 5 stars uhmmmmm..........2004-06-24

i have to admit that i'm totally new to the music DVD market, i own just one music VHS (the "feeling lucky punk" free deal epitaph made a while ago) so i don't really know what should i have expected, but i'm quite disappointed by this: the content itself is out of question here: bad religion are bad religion and they simply rock. the problem here is with the video: the image quality is quite low, it's clearly from some kind of cheap equipment (yes, i know you can't bring a 10.000$ video camera at a punk show ;)) but the video has a lot of interlacing problems, you can see it whenever something moves. and the editing has some problems too: they took the images of different shows for every song and patched them together, it may look nicer than sticking to a single venue for every song, but the audio goes clearly out of sync at every change.

the mood and the atmosphere is all there, you can almost smell that nice mixture of sweat and cheap alchool punk concerts usually have and at <14$ this is definetevely not a rip, but i would have expected something more professionally done, this really looks like the work of a very enthusiastic amateur.

Marcello

oh, one last thing, it is really hylarious to see how people at the show looked in 1989.
