A good buy.......2006-11-10
As a retired military officer and lifelong student of history, I like this look at these wars - it's useful to ID common themes and also unique aspects of each conflict.
This dvd was very helpful to me.......2005-02-17
I am familiar with World War II history, the Israeli Arab Wars, and recent American combat, but do not consider myself an expert on any of these areas. I was very pleased with this dvd with all of its detailed information (most particularly with its coverage of El Alamein 1942 which I enjoyed the most due to its interviews of both German and British veterans from the German English desert war itself) on the following battles: Gulf War 1991, Six Day War 1967, and The Battle of El Alamein 1942. For anyone wanting to learn a great deal about some major decisive battles in world history (particularly El Alamein in World War II) I would recommend this dvd heartily. It would work well as a class resource or as a personal primer on these key battles in history.
A line in the desert.......2004-04-30
For those of you that love history, its a DVD set you must have. The documentaries do not show (or talk about) every event that took place during the wars documented in the DVDs. But it is a good price for the quality, and is yet another interesting perspective from commentators who spoke about the wars in these DVDs.

Excellent.......2000-01-25
Perhaps the film quality is older but if I were to speak negatively of this video simply because of age then I might as well say bad things about every other older video. The new age music blends perfectly with the scenery of the desert and makes me want to travel to the southwest every time I view it.
Sure beats the VHS version.......1999-11-07
I have found this to be a very good transfer with very little artifact if any. Compared to my original VHS tape this is incredible from the CD sound to the brilliant colors that seem to be lacking on the VHS copy. I'm very pleased I'll have a copy of this now for a long long time! Highly recommended if you like David Lanz and Utah's finer scenery.
Good concept crippled by weak source material........1999-08-14
The graininess of the 16mm film detracts from the smooth, soothing atmosphere attempted by the producers. With high resolution viewing, the imperfections and age of the orginal equipment are substantially irritating. Cheaply priced, but I wished I had saved for 50% of Starship Troopers. I received good reviews on Earthlight, and will try that...a reluctant thumbs down on Desert Vision.
Soothing nature video with new age music.......1998-12-29
This DVD combines beautiful new age music with vivid nature footage of the western/southwestern United States. The music was composed by David Lanz and Paul Speer, popular new age artists and is sure to please. Watch the camera explore streams and waterfalls, the flight of an eagle (from the eagle's point of view), Utah's arches and many other natural wonders.
The main menu is kind of cheesy but it's the production that counts...and this one counts! Play this DVD in the background or while napping on the couch. Desert Vision is a pleasant addition to any DVD library. Such a nice price, too :v).

Customer Reviews:
Disappointed.......2007-07-07
I have the original VCR tape and ordered the DVD thinking that whoever did the conversion would have done a better job with the video. I still love the music but I will probably just use as a CD not video as the video quality is sadly degraded. I could have gotten the same quality using Dazzle to convert the video.
Desert Vision DVD.......2006-05-12
Like the Natural States DVD, I had bought this DVD to replace my aging VHS tape. Therefore my review has basically the same comments and complaints. The music is great, the video is very grainy, I would have thought that they might have tried to clean it up a bit for the DVD. Another weird thing they did was to use titles for the chapters that seem to have NO relation to the song the video was made for. In other words on the VHS the tracks are named for the song as they are on the CD, on the DVD they have "other" names, so if you are used to the VHS or CD names you won't see them on the chapter list. It would have been real nice had they kept the original song titles from the CD and VHS to be used as the Chapter Titles on the DVD. This applies to Natural States as well as Desert Vision.

One of the better early sound westerns........2006-09-10
Two long time friends find a baby boy left behind within an abandoned camp in old Arizona, and their conflict over who should take charge of the infant quickly lowers their relationship to the freezing point, where it remains for over 20 years although they are neighbouring ranchers, and the grown youth's attempt to bring about a reconciliation forms the heart of this interesting early western. William Boyd, later renowned as Hopalong Cassidy, is featured as the young man, Bill, raised by Cash Holbrook (William Farnum), with J. Farrell MacDonald as Jeff Cameron, the other of the feuding pair, and when Bill, a mining engineer, discovers a valuable lode of tungsten ore on Cameron's land, he forthwith fosters a mining project which he believes will be putting an end to the longstanding conflict. Actually filmed in Arizona's scenic Painted Desert region, the work is efficiently directed by Howard Higgin, who is abetted by the fine camerawork of Edward Snyder, with excellent sets arranged by Carroll Clark, and the cast generally performs well, a strong performance being given by Clark Gable as a completely unrepentant villain, only the tasteless characterization by Helen Twelvetrees as Cameron's daughter tainting the production.
Needs a new coat.......2005-10-01
Even though this is Clark Gable's first appearance in a sound movie - `sound' as in `synchronized noise,' not `sound' as in `free from defects and structurally complete' - THE PAINTED DESERT is a pretty wretched early talkie. The real star of the movie is William Boyd, better known to a couple of generations as Hopalong Cassidy. The movie begins with a couple of dust busting cowboys discovering an infant in a deserted camp. The cowboys care for, argue over, and ultimately part as enemies over the foundling. One carries off the baby to raise as a son, the other sets up a homestead at a desert watering hole.
The baby grows up to be Bill Holbrook (Boyd), while the waterhole cowboy marries, gets widdered, and has a pretty young daughter name of Mary Ellen (Helen Twelvetrees.) Papa Holbrook is a well-to-do cattle rancher while Mary Ellen's father is barely scratching out an existence until beau Bill discovers tungsten ore on his land. The set up being - the two feuding ex-partners will be reunited when the young `uns are united in matrimony, and prosperity, by cattle or tungsten ore, will bring peace to the valley. Enter Clark Gable, here playing a character named Rance Brett, an interloping desert Iago who sees that his best chance with Mary Ellen will only be realized if the old feud can be kept a-boiling.
This would be an alright western if it had a better plot, or the actors didn't talk so very, very slow, or if the direction/editing didn't keep you wondering things like `How did that injured cowboy get shot?' In other words, it'd be okay if everything in it were different. Although Gable is a catalyst for most of the action THE PAINTED DESERT is only going to appeal to die-hard fans of his, or Hoppy's. Also included on the Laserlight discount release is the 28-minute `Clark Gable on Film,' which is nothing more than a compilation of Gable trailers (China Sea, Lone Star, To Please a Lady, Mutiny on the Bounty, etc.) and publicity stills linked by a superficial narration (`Gable spent most of his life unconsciously looking to replace his dead mother....') Disappointing on every level.
GABLE'S TALKIE DEBUT.......2000-05-20
Cash and Jeff come across an abandoned baby in the Painted Desert; both want the baby, but Cash claims it as his own. Over the years, the former pals display animosity in an ongoing dispute over cattle, mining and water rights. Meanwhile, the baby boy, Bill grows into a strapping young man........The real star of this Pathe antique is the beautiful scenery. The photography is beautiful in this slightly stiff production which is mainly notable for Gable's talkie debut as bad guy, Brett (who blows up Boyd's mine!) The now rarely-seen Helen Twelvetrees (yes, that was her REAL married name) plays Mary Ellen Cameron.

good western.......2005-06-16
Considering the 1941 time frame, I thought this was a better than average Western. At no time did historical fact get in the way of the story. The music was typical, the guns, everything was strictly Hollywood, but the acting was pretty good. The main thing is that it is a fun old time cowboy movie and a bargain at the $3.88 price.

Mediocre--not worth the price.......2006-08-18
I got this product for 70% off, which means I spent about $20 for all 3 videos. So far I have only watched half of one of them---True North. But even so, if I could return them and get my money back, I would. Because even though I have a super high-end, brand new technology 60 inch HD screen with the most pixels you can get for under $8,000, the visuals were fuzzy. Hazy, at times. I was expecting visuals that stunned me---as good as a new mac screen---not even close. Yes, In some cases the colors (of the sunsets, for example), were vibrant and breath-taking, but in many cases the colors seemed mundane, washed out. And if you don't like Tangerine Dream you won't like the music either. I wasn't familiar with Tangerine Dream and I'm not a giant fan now. The reason I got it was because I'm a massage therapist and a tantrika---I like to bliss out on different kinds of sensory stimuli, and offer that to my cleints as well and I wanted something that felt like watching the most gorgeous creations God had ever inveted against angelic, hypnotic, ambient sounds that swept my mind into another world. This music was highly charged and spirited at times but no part of it came close to sweeping me away. At one point it sounded like a track you might hear in a high-end porn film... not terrible, just not wonderful. I dunno, for the price I thought it should be magnificient and spellbinding and make me want to cry. As it is, I doublt if I'll even bother to open the other two dvds. My advice to you is, if you have to have it, don't pay $49.99. $6.99 would be good. And don't buy it unless you love Tangerine Dream.
Captivating Photography.......2000-11-17
Tour these venues viewing only the prime cuts of the scenery. Quality photography of completely unordinary and suprising scenery and subject matter is set to new age music, it's the kind of video that can "take you there".

Major omission on this one!.......2000-06-10
The listing of this DVD sounds like you are getting a cheapWalmart unknown artist on a bargin basement DVD.
NOT!
No wheredoes it say that the artist on Desert Vision is none other than David Lanz and is a video duplicate of his CD by the same name. So, if you don't know Mr. Lanz, he is (IMHO) the premire pianist of our age. His many CDs are in my collection and are the best of all my music. Don't take my word for it. Find his CDs on Amazon and visit his web site [...]
The Desert Visions DVD is great. Serves well as video/audio background and discussion when friends are relaxing or having dinner at my place. Try it. END
