5 out of 5 stars Insightful overview of Marine Corps recruiting.......2006-11-13

If you want to understand the process the Marine Corps uses to recruit, train and orient new Marines to the requirements of Marine Corps life and duties, this will be a good video. While much has changed over the past 235+ years since the Marine Corps was founded, recruit training has, and always will be, a rite of passage. For those considering enlisting, this video will provide an overview of what awaits a new recruit. For those whose family members are Marine Corps enlisted, this can provide insight to the values that are at the heart of the Marine Corps. For those seeking to understand how the Marine Corps develops men and women to be part of a high performance team, this video will answer some of those questions as well. The video only includes Paris Island and MCRD San Diego; for those preparing for Officer Candidate School this video will have less to offer. Ron Tucker does a great job of sharing the "emotion" of being part of the Corps.

4 out of 5 stars The Crucible: Making Marines for the 21st Century.......2006-03-21

I found this DVD so very helpful when my son was in bootcamp at Parris Island. I am happy that I did not see it before he left for boot camp. It is a very "in your face" explanation of how Marines are made. The director takes us through the journey of young undisciplined civilians and their complete transformation. We have the opportunity to see groups of Marines meet several of the challenges in The Crucible and the teamwork required to complete each task.

The part that was most disturbing for me was the "in your face" approach of the drill sargents--and often a few at a time screaming at a recruit. How do they handle this stress? I wonder how the drill sargents do not have heart attacks! However, it is a fascinating DVD and so worth owning.

    Description

Each and every Marine Corps recruit has to survive 12 weeks of Boot Camp. It is perhaps the toughest 12 weeks anyone can imagine - especially for those whose average age is 19. To become one of the few and the proud, these recruits must first learn just to survive. More than just a showcase of grueling training, these three hours will shed light on the lives and backgrounds of those who make the decision to become United States Marines. Tragically, the events of September 11th take place in the middle of the sixth week of training. But for most recruits, the acts of terrorism only strengthen their resolve to become modern soldiers. Episode 1. Parris Island- Phase One: Follow young recruits as they prepare for Boot Camp at Parris Island. From all over the eastern U.S., they roll off the bus in the middle of the night and begin their transformation into U.S. Marines. Episode 2. Parris Island- Phase Two: The recruits at Parris Island learn to cope with the punishing regimen of physical training and mental conditioning. In the confidence course, they are pushed beyond their limits. Nerves become frayed, and attrition takes its toll. Episode 3. Parris Island- Phase Three: Training becomes more demanding as the recruits enter the 54-hour Crucible. Upon completion of this final test, they march to the mess hall for the Warrior's breakfast.

More than just a showcase of grueling training, these stories will shed light on the lives and backgrounds of those who make the decision to become US Marines. Tragically, the events of Sept 11th take place in the middle of the 6th week of training. But for most recruits, the acts of terrorism only strengthen their resolve to become modern soldiers. Phase 1: Follow young recruits as they prepare for Boot Camp at Parris Island. They come from all over the eastern half of the US, but it is here that they begin the transformation into US Marines. During the whirlwind of training, fear and confusion overcome them, but they soon learn to tap the warriors within. As the first episode closes, they begin to work as a team, acquiring their military bearing. Phase 2: The recruits at Parris Island learn to cope with the punishing regimen of physical training and mental conditioning. They are issued their rifles and are pushed beyond their limits. In the swimming instruction, several face paralyzing fear as they are laden with gear and put into the water. Some head for the medical platoon as attrition takes its toll and nerves become frayed as a few find that they can't hack it. As the hour closes, the recruits learn of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The importance of their training sinks in. Phase 3: The recruits face the gas chamber and learn the effects of nerve agents. Training becomes even more demanding as they rappel from dizzying height, simulating a drop from a helicopter. The culmination of recruit training is the 54-hour Crucible. Upon completion of this final test, the recruits march to the mess hall where the Warrior's breakfast is served. With the presentation of the Eagle, Globe and Anchor, the now former-recruits are officially called US Marines.

4 out of 5 stars A MUST have for the parent of child considering the Marines........2007-01-20

My 18 year old daughter saw this documentary on TV, and immediately wanted to become a Marine. She has extensive experience as a musician--and successfully auditioned for the Marine band--but even the bandies in the Marines must complete boot camp and combat training.

This series helped to prepare her for boot camp, but after she actually completed boot camp, she realized that some of the segments in the series appear 'dated.' That's the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5.

But, this documentary was filmed prior to and during the events surrounding September 11th. The Marine recruits in this series enlisted during a 'non-wartime' America, and graduated boot camp with the prospect of war looming. All of our lives, and of course, military life is VERY different NOW, so naturally, much of the series will feel 'dated.'

But, that aside, I decided to buy this series for my daughter so she can now show friends and family 'what it was like' to experience Marine boot camp. She simply expounds 'around' the parts that are a little different now with Marine boot camp, but otherwise it's a fairly accurate account of recruit life at Parris Island.

    4 out of 5 stars A little off.......2006-02-25

Having been on Parris Island, reality experience was a little more harsh. The DVD is good but they missed a lot of the routines that take place during training. The first half of the documentary is very exciting, it shows how new recruits are being transformed. Towards the end of the documentary, they showed too much of the crucible. Obviously documentary directors like this one would never show the public the whole truth because they're not allowed. There is much propaganda in the Corps. Boot camp in reality is ten times harder than it seems in this video. Overall, the video is a good starters kit for young people joining the Corps. Good luck and God bless the Corps.

5 out of 5 stars Good to go!.......2005-11-08

This is a three-hour trip through a three-month process of turning young men and women into US Marines. The Discovery Channel got unprecedented access to the recruit training at Parris Island, South Carolina. From the pre-arrival interviews with soon-to-be recruits to the moments of the yelling-off-the-bus and standing on the yellow footprints, we are introduced to several would-be marines in honest and frank ways. These interviews are spliced together with the opening scenes of recruit experience -- getting the haircut, getting the uniform, learning very basic things (making the bed, wearing the cover, etc.). However, this is not yet official recruit training, even though it is very much part of the overall experience. The recruit training really begins when the series commander introduces the Drill Instructors (DIs) for each platoon -- these are the permanent men and women in charge of the training. Men only train with men; women only train with women.

There are about 600 Drill Instructor and training personnel on Parris Island; there are many platoons training simultaneously, with graduations taking place each week, as well as intakes. Minimum requirements of fitness are first determined by the Initial Strength Test (IST); those who do not make the first cut get 'recycled' into the Physical Conditioning Platoon (PCP). From these beginnings, the recruits are followed through their initial drills, Basic Warrior Training, swim training, rifle qualifications, and the Crucible, followed by graduation.

All that takes place here is real. This is not play-acting for the cameras -- indeed, it is commonly held that Marines love cameras, and love to show off their stuff. They aren't 'the proud' for nothing. The camera crews followed men and women in their respective platoons, and followed recruits in Parris Island barracks, training courses, classrooms and others. No activity is too small -- from folding uniforms and packing a locker (over and over again) to disassembling and reassembling the rifle in rapid time. The training is very stressful -- yelling and screaming, repetition, incentive punishments (IP), and constant activity is meant to keep the recruits going on a high-energy level. Nothing can approximate combat stress, but this comes as close as it can come.

The people followed throughout include twin brothers, people from urban and rural settings, single, engaged, and married people; there are Americans, and those hoping to become more American by joining the Marines (a man from the Ukraine, a woman from Guyana, etc.). What motivates the recruits varies; few can pinpoint a burning desire from childhood to become marines; in fact, at least one recruit initially told his recruiter to leave him alone and not call back! There are many people dropped (overall, 10 percent of men and 15 percent of women on average are dropped from training for one reason or another), including some of the people followed for the documentary.

The crews also follow the Drill Instructors and officers in charge for commentary on what is happening and why -- officers are scarce, as the vast majority of the training takes place only at the hands of the individual Drill Instructors, enlisted all, who stay with platoons from beginning to graduation, and the success of the platoon is the success of the DIs.

One gets a sense of the difficulty, the physicality, and the intensity of spirit that happens here. Marines are not automatons, they are not robots, but they are transformed into disciplined and effective warriors whose skills are beyond what the recruits thought possible for themselves. The transformation from individuals to team players is also apparent, particularly with events like the obstacle (confidence) course and the Crucible. Their stories are inspiring, and occasionally heart-breaking. While there are bits and pieces not covered, and certainly nothing in print or on video can ever match the actual experience of being in Marine Corps Recruit Training, this video comes close.
