Incredible Jazz Documentary.......2005-05-06

The Library of Congress and Artists House have produced a genuine masterpiece. The documentary "Listen" alone is so well put together I've watched it 5 times all the way through and still am not tired of seeing it. Just watching Gerry learn One Note Samba direct from it's composer Antonio Carlos Jobim years before it was a hit song in his NY apartment is worth the price alone. Historic TV footage of Gerry soloing with Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins and Billie Holiday grinning and digging what he's playing is fantastic as well. This is a wonderful momento to Gerry and his significant impact on American Music in the 20th century. A Giant for all time indeed.

Long awaited masterpiece.......2005-12-28

I have almost every note ever made available by Gerry Mulligan and I am so happy to see some of the great LPs finding their way to CD with bonus material. This DVD goes the extra mile. Unlike some, I don't consider "Age of Steam" to be among Mulligan's best work, but there are some gems, including K-4 Pacific and Golden Notebooks. I love Brookmeyer and Mulligan, but Tom Scott and the drummer are clearly out of their league in this ensemble. It's nice to have the charts included and to have the Hal Leonard masterclass on DVD.

What elevates this set to greatness is the documentary "Listen:Gerry Mulligan". Gerry was very hands-on when it came to the performance and creation of his material and he was heavilly involved in the making of this video. It is a treat to see him with Jobim learning "One Note Samba", which had , apparently, not been publicly performed yet. The concert footage and the interviews with Franca (his widow) and the footage of Milan (where he spent half the year are all exquisite additions.

Now that we know the footage is out there, how about some DVD footage of Gerry Mulligan in concert? Perhaps the "Jazz in America: Live at Eric's" on DVD, or a video of the concert jazz band. Gerry is becoming a footnote less than a decade after his passing. Given his pedigree as a player, composer, arranger, and overall musician, allowing that is a crime.

OK, so why isn't this new set readily available for sale through Amazon? I bought my copy at ejazzlines.com -- no one else seems to have it! First you get the cd of THE AGE OF STEAM -- which is not available elsewhere. Then you get a dvd disc with over four hours of material. A master class with gerry talking and playing; Interviews with musicans and friends; the documentary, LISTEN: GERRY MULLIGAN which has great concert footage and home films of Gerry playing with Dave Brubeck, Art Farmer, Bob Brookmeyer and others. My favorite is a 1950's rehersal film shot in Gerry's apartment with Gerry on clarinet and Antonio Carlos Jobim on piano and vocal, working on "One Note Samba ". I could go on. Track down this set -- it is NOT out of print yet. This is a moving tribute to one of the finest musicans of our time.
