Worry not, Disney fans--this special edition DVD of the beloved Cinderella won't turn into a pumpkin at the strike of midnight. One of the most enduring animated films of all time, the Disney-fied adaptation of the gory Brothers Grimm fairy tale became a classic in its own right, thanks to some memorable tunes (including "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes," "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo," and the title song) and some endearingly cute comic relief.

The famous slipper (click for larger image)
We all know the story--the wicked stepmother and stepsisters simply won't have it, this uppity Cinderella thinking she's going to a ball designed to find the handsome prince an appropriate sweetheart, but perseverance, animal buddies, and a well-timed entrance by a fairy godmother make sure things turn out all right. There are a few striking sequences of pure animation--for example, Cinderella is reflected in bubbles drifting through the air--and the design is rich and evocative throughout. It's a simple story padded here agreeably with comic business, particularly Cinderella's rodent pals (dressed up conspicuously like the dwarf sidekicks of another famous Disney heroine) and their misadventures with a wretched cat named Lucifer. There's also much harrumphing and exposition spouting by the King and the Grand Duke. It's a much simpler and more graceful work than the more frenetically paced animated films of today, which makes it simultaneously quaint and highly gratifying. --David Kronke

DVD Features

For another of its classic films, Disney delivers another dazzling DVD with a gorgeous, razor-sharp picture and 5.1 sound. (Note: the 1949 film is properly presented in full-screen format, 1.33 aspect ratio, because widescreen films weren't made until the '50s.) The best part of the supplemental features is the archival material, the absolute highlight of which is two unused songs, "Cinderella's Work Song" (in which Cinderella imagines multiplying herself à la the Sorcerer's Apprentice) and "Dancing on a Cloud."

Bippity-boppity-boo! (click for larger image)
Because these numbers were never animated, they're accompanied by stylish illustrations from the Disney artists, and they're simply marvelous to look at. The artist of much of that material, Mary Blair, gets her due in a 15-minute featurette, while the better known "Nine Old Men" are the subject of a round-table discussion among some of today's top animators. In addition, a 38-minute documentary covers their contributions to specific characters of Cinderella as well as the film in general and the vocal cast. Also on the historical side is "The Cinderella That Almost Was," tracking the development of the project through decades of original Disney concepts, characters, and songs, including the 1922 silent "Laugh-o-Gram," which is also included in its entirety.

The pumpkin transformed (click for larger image)

Additional musical material includes three radio programs and a short promo of the movie by Perry Como, in which he summarizes the plot amid some songs by the Fontaine Sisters, star Ilene Woods, and the host himself. Seven other unused songs (17 minutes total) are available in audio-only. The material for kids is on the sparse side, consisting of two music videos, Disney Channel personality Sally (from "Mike's Super Short Show") learning how to become a princess with the help of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition crew and others, a minor dancing-princess feature, and a DVD-ROM design studio. Oddest extra: ESPN's "top Cinderella stories," including the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team and Joe Namath's New York Jets, although stories on Mia Hamm and tennis's Williams sisters should appeal to the film's primary target audience of young girls. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars DISNEY ES DISNEY.......2007-06-27

5 out of 5 stars Cinderella.......2007-06-25

Even after 55 years, "Cinderella" remains a tirelessly enchanting milestone of Disney storytelling, with splendid animation, vibrant color, and marvelous songs to complement the rags-to-riches, Charles Perrault-inspired storyline. Woods voices Cinderella with delicate charm, Phipps gives his Prince plenty of suave charisma, and Audley, as the wicked Stepmother, is an appropriately nasty piece of work. With a horde of ebullient animal characters like Jacques and Gus-Gus, "Cinderella" is the perfect dinner date for kids and wistful adults. Song highlight: "Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo."

5 out of 5 stars Magic Kingdom.......2007-06-10

One of the best fantasy Disney films . Fun and magic and imaginative; entertaining for adults and kids. However, talk about the message of -Cinderella being rescued by her Prince Charming- with your older children. (Such as "Girls you don't have to wait for Prince Charming to come along to solve your problems. Cinderella could have and should have been able to overcome her problems, herself. She actually was a strong individual and happy, despite her circumstances and she was creative by eliciting the aid and frienship of the mice and she had the belief that her faith would make her own dreams come true, etc.)."

5 out of 5 stars My little girl's favorite.......2007-05-14

What can I say that hasn't already been said? Cinderella is the classic princess movie - and it actually has an OK message - if you keep on believing and being a good person, eventually something good will happen to you. And if you are vain, mean, nasty and vindictive, you'll never win the prince.

There are some other messages that are not as good, but overall, we love this movie. We dress up like Cinderella and sing cinderelly cinderelly every night now.

I'm glad my little girl enjoys the classic Disney movies that I did when I was young.

Hollywood's legendary "woman's director," George Cukor (The Women, The Philadelphia Story), transformed Audrey Hepburn into street-urchin-turned-proper-lady Eliza Doolittle in this film version of the Lerner and Loewe musical. Based on George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, My Fair Lady stars Rex Harrison as linguist Henry Higgins (Harrison also played the role, opposite Julie Andrews, on stage), who draws Eliza into a social experiment that works almost too well. The letterbox edition of this film on video certainly pays tribute to the pageantry of Cukor's set, but it also underscores a certain visual stiffness that can slow viewer enthusiasm just a tad. But it's really star wattage that keeps this film exciting, that and such great songs as "On the Street Where You Live" and "I Could Have Danced All Night." Actor Jeremy Brett, who gained a huge following later in life portraying Sherlock Holmes, is quite electric as Eliza's determined suitor. --Tom Keogh

3 out of 5 stars Way Over-Rated, and Often VERY Unpleasant!.......2007-06-29

Yes, it is a nice Cinderella story, and Audrey plays a fine role. There is an excellent message about the ingrained Brit Class System circa 1910..And there are some nice costumes, mainly women's hats, at the Horse race..Add to this a few memorable songs..So what is the problem with this ? Mainly, the near- nauseating character of Higgins, an old fashioned snob and misogynist of the ugliest type, who we have to watch sneer and scold for the better part of two hours! Not pretty! True, Pickering is a nice counterpoint, and really a decent old chap, but Higgins is the main character, and to watch and listen to this old goat goes well beyond a pleasant way to spend time! The song and dance numbers are hardly even third rate. Any comparison with a 1940's-50's MGM musical puts this one to shame! No dancing to speak of, and very low production quality..Then again, this was Warner, not known for musicals!..And there is a claustrophic sense here that says , "How can I get away from this miserable phonetics teacher?" It's near impossible..I can think of at least 30 musicals far and away above this, not just MGM, but Fred and Ginger, and so forth..In fact, 3-stars may be too kind for this one, since it is way below the hype!..Also, check out the 1930's PYGMALION with Wendy Hiller and Leslie Howard, and you can easily see how almost the entire movie (MY FAIR LADY) was completely taken from PYGMALION, including the sets and dialogue..About the only thing new is the songs, which are fun and amusing, but not really in the top tier of great musical tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Is the Creator Responsible for His Creation?.......2007-06-12

I had not watched this marvelous movie for many years when I took the opportunity to watch it again. The movie is a little stiff in places, but that stiffness seemed, to me, to enhance the formality of English high society. Audrey Hepburn belies that stiffness with her free-spirited characterization of Eliza Doolittle. Eliza contrasts nicely with Henry Higgin's mother, played by veteran actor Gladys Cooper ("The Happiest Millionaire," "The Song of Bernadette," and "The List of Adrian Messenger"). Mrs. Higgins is quite proper and perfect in every situation. Henry, played by the incomparable Sir Rex Harrison, is disdainful and aloof. Henry believes he is the remote scientific observer who can categorize and stereotype everyone, and is not affected by his surroundings.

A problem arises when Henry Higgins bets Colonel Pickering (Wilfrid Hyde-White, "Ten Little Indians" (1965) and "In Search of the Castaways") that he could take anyone, such as Eliza Doolittle, and turn them into something like a lady's maid or a shop girl. Colonel Pickering takes Henry up on his bet, volunteering to finance the experiment.

Looking at the next part of this movie with five decades of life, I quickly saw the problem that Henry was getting into. Henry was taking a human life adjusted to a certain set of surroundings, modifying that life so that it no longer fit in, and was then prepared to cast that life adrift once he proved his point. Henry failed to see that he did anything wrong, and therein lies the irony and pathos of this movie. The question a first-time watcher asks is whether Henry will be able to grow up at last and realize that people require compassion and empathy and are more than science experiments.

In addition to a marvelous story, this movie boasts wonderful music and excellent sets. Though some of Audrey Hepburn's singing survived, Marni Nixon sang most of the music attributed to Hepburn. Nixon's singing was phenomenal and her singing voice is close enough to Hepburn's that it sounds as though Hepburn could be singing.

Other singing numbers contained extensive choreography on expansive sets. Two complexly choreographed songs that come to mind are "Get Me to the Church on Time" and the "Ascot Gavotte."

This movie featured an array of sets depicting street scenes and interior scenes. Though the street scenes were excellent, my favorite set in the movie has always been Henry Higgin's incredible library. I would love to have his library in my house, though duplicating that library would be incredibly expensive.

This movie won 20 awards, which includes eight Oscars. Rex Harrison won the Best Actor Oscar and the movie won the Best Picture Oscar, both highly coveted awards. Harrison won many other awards for this film, and "My Fair Lady" became the most awarded movie of 1965.

Of course, awards do not necessarily mean a film is either good or great. However, Rex Harrison, Audrey Hepburn and Wilfrid Hyde-White have such incredible acting skills and such screen presence that they make this film a joy to watch. I was spell-bound as I watched Audrey Hepburn become Eliza Doolittle and capture the hearts of everyone in the movie. Rex Harrison was incredible as Henry Higgins. This movie was either Harrison's best, or one of his best.

The story is also captivating. Henry Higgins experiments with the life of a human being. What Henry Higgins failed to realize is that once he became involved with his subject, he lost his objectivity and learned compassion. Love can come from compassion. The only thing that surprised me in this viewing of the movie is that I previously had not realized how early in the movie that Eliza Doolittle had come to love Henry Higgins.

"My Fair Lady" is one of the best musicals of all time. The combination of story, acting, singing and sets is amazing. Fans of musicals and love stories will enjoy this movie, even on multiple viewings.

Enjoy!

The DVD does not work in Ireland so it is absolutely useless!! I should have been made aware of this when I was purchasing the product. I would like to be refunded in full for the three DVDs I have purchased: My Fair Lady, Paris when it Sizzles and Breakfast at Tiffanys (purchased at the same time)
Also the packaging costs were not displayed until i had entered my credit card number and were much too expensive.
Overall i am extremely disappointed with my experience and I expect to be compensated for this.

Gray Matters has one of the most adorable casts of any movie in recent years--the combined sweetness of Heather Graham (Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me), Bridget Moynahan (Lord of War), Molly Shannon (Year of the Dog), Thomas Cavanagh (Ed), Alan Cumming (X-Men 2), and Sissy Spacek (Carrie, In the Bedroom) narrowly avoids being diabetes-inducing. Gray (Graham) and her brother Sam (Cavanagh) have been best friends forever--so close that they find it hard to date. Gray pushes Sam into asking out Charlie (Moynahan), but when Sam and Charlie hit it off so well they spontaneously decide to get married, Gray finds herself unexpectedly dismayed... but not as dismayed as she is when, on a girls' night out before the ceremony, she and Charlie share a drunken kiss that sets Gray's body tingling. Gray Matters juggles a lot of emotional issues; the sibling interconnectedness problem doesn't flow smoothly into the coming-out story of the movie's second half. But sprinkled throughout are charming scenes and wonderfully deft moments that make the story's clumsy missteps all the more baffling. There's no question that Graham is a star who just can't seem to find the right vehicle; Gray Matters won't be her breakthrough, but it's further evidence of her significant appeal. --Bret Fetzer

Description

In this hilarious romantic comedy, Gray (Heather Graham) helps her brother (Tom Cavanaugh) find the love of his life. But the night before her brother's wedding, Gray's world is turned upside-down when she discovers that she has feelings for his fiancé (Bridget Moynahan)! With the help of a sarcastic co-worker (Molly Shannon), a sympathetic cab driver (Alan Cumming), and her therapist (Oscar-winner Sissy Spacek), Gray is forced to figure out who she really is.

2 out of 5 stars Very bland.......2007-07-08

The dialogue in this movie sucks. It is either not funny or extremely cliche. It could have turned out so much better with the general plot of the movie but it was a huge turndown for me.

4 out of 5 stars Why all the negative reviews?.......2007-07-02

I had heard a lot of bad things about this movie when it first came out but decided to watch it anyway because of the cast as well as the cute storyline. I wasn't expecting much but I was surprised that I actually ended up really liking it!

So what's to like about this movie? First, the cast contains a lot of eye candy. Some actors/actresses you may recognize are Alan Cummings, Molly Shannon, Bridget Moynahan, Heather Graham, and the wonderful Rachel Shelley. Second, the storyline is really cute. Basically, a woman (Gray) and her brother (Sam) agree to find the perfect partner for each other. Gray finds a woman named Charlie for her brother and Charlie and Sam hit it off right away. Within a few days, the couple is in Las Vegas to get married. When Charlie and Gray kiss the night before the couple's wedding, sparks fly and Gray realizes that she might be gay. I was actually really happy with the way it ended. I personally think that it shed some light on gay relationships and it shows that you truly can't prevent who you fall in love with.

And what's not to like? This movie certainly isn't Oscar-worthy. It's a typical romantic comedy. Don't expect this movie to be earth-shattering. Also, without giving too much away, I'll say that some parts progressed rather quickly and I felt a couple of scenes should have gone into more depth. But as I said above, it's not Oscar-worthy (and I'm sure the writers didn't intend for it to be) so I was ok with this one flaw as the movie was still entertaining.

Forget what you've heard about this movie. Check it out for yourself. Like me, you may be surprised and really enjoy it.

3 out of 5 stars Kind of Gray.......2007-06-29

"Gray Matters"

Kind of Gray

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

I had heard so much hype about "Gray Matters" that I could not wait to see it and it seems now that the hype was totally unjustified. The cast is good and Heather Graham as Gray creates a character that I felt for and really liked. Tom Cavanagh, as Gray's brother, Sam, has charm and is quite funny. Charlie, played by Bridget Moyahan, the object of both Gray's and Sam's affection is good and Alan Cummings is great as Gray's cab driver friend. The other cast member, Sissy Spacek and Molly Shannon are also good but the film is lacking something. I liked the film and I am having a difficult time pinpointing where it went wrong. I think it is probably the idea that there are some gay people who do not realize that they are gay until later on. I mean, I know that some embrace homosexuality late but it doesn't seem to work here.
It is hard to accept that when Gray kissed Charlie that she suddenly realized that she was gay. It seems to be grasping at straws to build a plot. Does someone suddenly realize he is gay or is it a process? What was it that lets Gray know she was suddenly gay? Now the kiss was great and hot but it was not enough.
The film does grab the audience and fills it with hope. The script also deals with social issues such as media, image and sexuality as well as identity--issues that are not dealt with completely in mainstream movies. It does not preach and has an important message (but it is somewhat boring as it meanders from situation to situation). As good of an actress that Heather Graham is, she is not convincing as a lesbian.
What really hurts the movie from reaching a level of greatness is that most of the events are unbelievable. Unless you are Britney Spears you do not rush to Las Vegas to get married after knowing someone for only six days. But there are moments that are genuinely funny and there are moments that are thought provoking.

5 out of 5 stars Gray Matters is Great!.......2007-06-28

Great is all I can say. I have been so bored with every romantic comedy that has come out in the past five years. Finally a movie with heart, soul and originality. The cast is superb, the writing is fantastic and it's a great postcard of New York City. I laughed and I even shed a tear or two! This should have been the comedy of the year. I highly reccomend it. Molly Shannon is also hilarious--some of her funniest acting yet.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty weak.......2007-06-24

Unimaginative plotting yields protracted bridges of tedium riveted together with predictability. Sissy Spacek's therapist, Alan Cumming's sympathetic cab driver, and some truly beautiful New York ambient backdrops were just barely enough to get me through to the end.

The Sesame Street character has fun singing some catchy new songs (you and your toddler just might, too), explaining the difference between light and heavy, having a laugh over pictures and numbers, and sharing the screen with a good-natured Whoopi Goldberg and Julia Roberts. Of the various Elmo videos, this one really does have the choicest material and stands up to repeat viewings--a big plus with little ones. --Tom Keogh

1 out of 5 stars Not a favorite...........2007-06-27

At my house- this one isn't a favorite. I think the story line is too long for a toddler. They like action and this one doesn't give it. My DD loves the babies, dogs and farms one. We watch that over and over again, but this one just sits. Sorry Elmo!

5 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up from an Elmo lover!.......2007-06-08

My 10 month old daughter LOVES this DVD. It's only 30 minutes long--perfect length for distracting her during a diaper/clothing change or keeping her busy while I cook dinner. She squeals when the FBI warning comes on at the beginning because she knows what's coming! Elmo's rap about the number 5 is a little annoying, but oh well...she loves it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Video.......2007-06-06

This is a great video. My daughter loves it. I definitely recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars My Son loves this DVD.......2007-06-05

My 19 month old son would wake up in the middle of the night and say Elmo TV and he wouldnt stop until we put it on. He would watch this show over and over and smile and laugh and he does the action also. I also enjoy watching it with him.

3 out of 5 stars The Best of Elmo - Is It Really?.......2007-05-23

Although entertaining for the under 5 set, "The Best of Elmo" is reasonably dated and mostly shows clips of 'shaggy' Elmo prior to his haircut. This aside there are a plenty of songs for the little one to listen to and a guest appearance from Julia Roberts and Whoopi Goldberg.

Join Ernie at The Furry Arms Hotel for a musical lesson in just how useful counting can be. When Ernie finds and returns a misplaced key, he uses his knowledge of numbers to return the key to the correct guest. As Ernie begins to learn about the hotel business, he finds many common situations in which counting is essential. Throughout the 30-minute video, Ernie and his friends help children learn to count from 1 to 20 with such songs as the jazzy "That's How the Numbers Go," an original version of the Chorus Line show tune "One," and "Rap Song #11." Favorite Sesame Street characters Elmo and The Count are joined by new characters including Ding the Dinger, a furry fellow with a bell on his head, and Benny, the bellboy that responds to Ding the Dinger's dings. Children as young as 18 months will bounce happily along with the catchy tunes and 2-year-olds will be inspired to count aloud with Ernie. Kids up to age 5 will hone their counting skills and laugh at the increasingly frustrated Benny as he delivers everything from 1 bucket of ice to 15 stampeding elephants! If you're looking for a fun video that teaches counting skills, here it is. --Tami Horiuchi

It's fun, creative, entertaining, and keeps your kids moving, dancing and counting!

We LOVE it!

4 out of 5 stars its worth it.......2007-03-15

Its pretty good. It took a while for my son to watch more than 5mins but now i just go to the songs and he watches the dvd.It has really helped with his counting. He just turned 2 on feb.24th 2007. I would advise buying it if your kid is around his age for the counting part.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Developmental Tool.......2007-03-14

Purchased this for my Grandson who is 4 months old. He has watched it three times and is very fascinated with it even though the theme is too advanced for him. However, it will become a great learning tool in the near future. Sesame Street is the greatest.

3 out of 5 stars Not very interesting and no Elmo!.......2007-03-08

This DVD was very advanced for my 18-month old. In Kids favorite Songs there is a lot of counting backwards from 10 to 1 which my kid loves too mimick (he still doesn't say much that can be understood) so I thought he would love this DVD. There is too much talking in the intro and it bores my kid as soon as it starts plus there is no Elmo. My kid loves Elmo and expects to see Elmo on Sesame Street. We are keeping this DVD for later when he is about 3 he might appreciate it then. Right now he has no interest in it whatsoever.

4 out of 5 stars lots of "vintage" sesame street clips.......2007-02-12

It has a storyline that incorporates lots of little clips from Sesame Street during my childhood, along with newer ones exposing my child to numbers in a musical way.

Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt dance their way through Girls Just Want to Have Fun, a glorious example of 1980s kitsch. Janey (Parker), the new girl at a Catholic high school in Chicago, dreams of becoming a dancer on Dance TV. With the help of new wave hipster Lynne (Hunt), Janey enters a dance contest and gets paired with Jeff (Lee Montgomery), a rebel in spandex, and the two are soon smitten with each other. Unfortunately, they've made an enemy of a snooty rich girl, who vows to take them down. Everything about Girls Just Want to Have Fun is cheap and cheesy--it doesn't even have the Cyndi Lauper version of the title song--but that doesn't make it any less goofily entertaining, particularly when a debutante ball is wrecked by a bizarre combination of punk rockers and female bodybuilders. Featuring a very young Shannen Doherty as Jeff's little sister. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt - in a surprisingly fun movie! .......2007-07-07

If you're used to Sarah Jessica Parker in her more recent incarnation, wife of Matthew Broderick, mother to an adorable son and former star of Sex in the City as well as a designer of a new clothing line (Bitten), then you should see her earlier in her career.

All the charm and style is still there (okay, the style isn't quite the same as in Sex and the City) but her personality shines through, as does that of Helen Hunt. They work surprisingly well together and, happily, the movie is an enjoyable romp with lots of dancing (and some very cute guys).

The focus of the movie is the chance to be a dancer on a dance show. No, this isn't deep, intellectual stuff but it IS the kind of film teens relate to and THIS adult found it fun to watch, too. Plenty of appeal for everyone!

5 out of 5 stars One of My All Time Favorite Movies; it's a "buyer.".......2007-05-09

"Girls Just Want To Have Fun" is one of my all time favorite movies! I love it! This movie is definitely a "buyer." It includes all of the components of a perfect girl's teen oriented movie...friendship, rivalry, romance, dancing (competitive), and catchy songs. One of my other all time favorite movies is "Adventures in Babysitting" with Elisabeth Shue. I can watch both of these movies again and again.

5 out of 5 stars As exciting as the music in it..........2007-03-23

Sarah and Helen are fun and cute in this movie. The dancing is fun to watch too.

The music makes you want to get up and dance too. I recommend this for your personal library.

5 out of 5 stars The best Moment in the Film.......2007-02-16

I have spent the last 20 years searching the video rentals and store looking for this movie. Unfortunately, I could not remember the names of the people who starred in it. I could only remember the name and that there was a hot, beautiful young man(Lee Montgomery)in it. I was not even sure if he was still alive or in show business yet. I managed to find a DVD copy of it. Discovering that it was Sarah, Helen and Shannon who were starring in it. I have after watching it for awhile aside form the music and the dancing in it. I finally decide that the greatest moment is when nasty Natalie was told by her Father to "Why don't you just Shut-Up" which made her jaw drop. After all of the trouble she cause to Janey and Jeff.

A couple of old Dames make the slender story of Ladies in Lavender surprisingly moving. Janet and Ursula (Maggie Smith and Judi Dench), a pair of elderly sisters living on the Cornish coast, discover a young Polish man named Andrea (Daniel Bruhl, Goodbye Lenin!) washed ashore and barely alive. They nurse him back to health and discover that he's a talented violinist--a fact also recognized by a mysterious young woman (Natascha McElhone, The Truman Show), who may woo Andrea away from them. The core of the movie is not its plot but the skillful and delicate play of emotions underlying how the sisters treat Andrea; Ursula, a spinster, finds herself sliding from maternal affection to an embarrassing but irresistible schoolgirl crush. Ladies in Lavender captures something that few contemporary movies bother to consider: Older men and women are as capable of passion and desire as the young, but the young carelessly (and sometimes cruelly) disregard the old. In the hands of Dench (Shakespeare in Love, Iris) and Smith (California Suite, Gosford Park)--as well as David Warner (Time After Time) as a bitter doctor--Ladies in Lavender becomes a bit like a violin concerto itself: Discreet and subtle, but finding in the smallest movements a richness of feeling. --Bret Fetzer

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Superb Acting and Cinematography...........2007-07-05

In pre-war England two sisters, Maggie Smith and Judi Dench, have their quiet seaside vacation abruptly interrupted when they notice the body of a young man washed ashore near their cottage the morning after a terrible storm. They take the young man home and, with the help of their housekeeper (a real card...she's hysterical!) begin the arduous process of nursing him back to health. When he is strong enough to be able to communicate with them, they realize he is of Polish descent. Thus one of the sisters, Ursula (played beautifully by Judi Dench) takes it upon herself to teach him English, and in the process, develops romantic feelings for him. We soon learn that the young man is Andrea, a gifted violinist who was trying to get to America in pursuit of a better life. As he grows stronger in health and is constantly provided for by the sisters, he begins to yearn for friendships outside of their household. However, the two sisters, particularly Ursula, remain very possessive of him and make every attempt to limit his outside dealings with others. Conflict arises when Andrea befriends a beautiful German artist who has rented a cottage in town, and the villagers begin to suspect that they are up to no good.

What is so refreshing about this film is the superb acting by Dench, Smith and an outstanding supportive cast. Nothing is forced on the viewer; the action is all very laid back and the story just sort of unravels as the actors carry us from one scene to another. Granted, the entire premise of the story is a bit, dare I say "unimaginative", but the acting is what makes this so incredibly beautiful. Give this one a go on a leisurely afternoon when you have a couple of hours to spare and want to spend uniterrupted time with a laid back movie. You'll be glad you did.

    5 out of 5 stars A precious gem.......2007-06-27

Other reviewers have more or less summarized the plot of this film: set in the days before World War II commences, two spinster sisters have their genteel lives disrupted by a near-dead young man washed up on the shore in front of their Cornish home. As they nurse him back to health, the younger sister falls helplessly in love with him.

So many reviewers have chosen to focus on the age of the actresses, yet what is really important here is the sparse script, the light-handed direction, and the consumate skill with which the three leads and the supporting cast play their roles. It is quite heartbreaking to see Ursula going so hopelessly through the pangs of a love she should have felt in her teens or early twenties, when now she is in her sixties. The young men she would have known and loved all died in the trenches of World War One, so her naive heart is helpless in the face of her first love. As she comments towards the end of the movie, "it's not fair."

This is a beautiful miniature of a movie, akin to a Vermeer in the way it captures all the tiny details of someone else's life and touches us with the humanity of what we all share: our vulnerable hearts. We see the various characters trying to pursue as best they can their various agendas; yet in the end it is the one person who does not appear to pursue anything who ends up winning all. The young man Andreas, who months before was washed up on a foreign beach, ends up performing a masterwork in London to the acclaim of all. He is really just the mechanism through means of which the hearts of others are variously exposed.

Maggie Smith and Judi Dench turn in performances that are breathtaking in their craft and apparent simplicity. If Oscars were actually handed out for acting, they each would have scored Best Leading Actress. This movie is a masterwork of understatement, a poignant triumph.

3 out of 5 stars The Ladies are magnificent - but they always are.......2007-06-17

"Ladies in Lavender" (2004) is a film starring two of the best British actresses, Dame Judy Dench and Dame Maggie Smith as two lonely sisters, a widow and an old maid who live quietly and uneventfully in their cottage on the seaside in Cornwall, England. The film takes place in 1936 before the WWII begins. One morning, the sisters discover a young man, almost a boy injured and washed ashore near their home and their lives were changed forever. The sisters take the boy in and care for him. As time passes, they learn that Andrea was on the ship heading to America where he hoped to become a professional musician. Andrea is extremely talented violinist and one day, his playing attracts the attention of a young Russian woman -painter, Olga who lives in the village. Olga's brother is a world renowned violinist and she is ready to offer the boy the chance of his life but the sisters, especially Ursula (Dench) seems very reluctant to let Andrea and Olga communicate. Ursula who never been married feels deep tenderness, warmth, and longing for Andrea that she has difficulty to hide. Her sister who is very close and compassionate to her sees quite well what goes on but she also understands that some dreams would always stay just the beautiful dreams...

The main reason to see the movie is acting and chemistry between two beloved actresses, both in their 70s and both on the top of their profession. As for the story of two lonely elderly sisters in their coastal home, it was told better in Lindsay Anderson's "Whales in August" (1987) that starred Bette Davis and Lillian Gish, and Anderson's film does not have a young foreign boy to make it compelling and moving. The verbal and silent communication between two sisters as played by Gish and Davis makes the earlier movie a quiet and poignant gem. As for the unrequited tender vulnerable love that comes when one least expects it and that makes the life of an older person heaven and hell at the same time, watch "Death in Venice", the tragic masterpiece by Luchino Visconti.

A beloved children's band from Australia, The Wiggles are four music-making guys: Jeff, Murray, Greg, and Anthony. When the Big Red Car (a whimsical dune buggy) won't start, or as the Wiggles say, no "Chugga, Cugga, Toot, Toot!," it's an ideal time to sing and dance. There are songs about walking across the street and eating foods that are healthy as well as some that are more familiar like "Head, Shoulder, Knees, and Toes" and "Look Both Ways." The lads stir up a whole lot of energy with the help of their costumed friends, including Wags the Dog, Officer Beaples, Dorothy the Dinosaur, Captain FeatherSword, and Zardo Zap. Their videos have a retro '60s feel, very upbeat and fun. It's easy to see why they are so popular in the land down under. Ages 3 to 6. --Peggy Maltby-Etra

LOVE IT! My 2yr. old daughter loves every song. The Wiggles music is FAR better then any child singers out there. With the way kids love to play the same CD's over and over I'm glad it's the Wiggles.

    5 out of 5 stars The Wiggles-Toot Toot.......2007-05-25

It took our daughter a little while to really enjoy this video but now she really likes it and it keeps her entertained. This DVD was originally made for VHS format so it is a little bit older but it has a good selection of songs. Our daughter is 2 and she likes it a lot.

I got it for our son, which is a apecial needs young man, and he loves it. So for me it rates a 5.

5 out of 5 stars A great addition to our Wiggles DVD collection..........2007-01-13

Another great Wiggles DVD. I love watching my boys sing and dance along with the Wiggles.

    5 out of 5 stars A Journey through Wiggle-World.......2006-12-27

The Big Red Car loses its mojo and strands the Wiggles in the middle of town. Jeff, showing remarkable leadership in a time of crisis considering he normally just seems to be the poster-boy for narcolepsy, hops out of the car to go visit friends. Musical numbers ensue, all of which are pretty good stuff and far superior to anything Barney ever put together. My only qualm with this video would be that Greg goes from being fairly competent in past DVDs to totally idiotic in this DVD. He doesn't know that mechanics fix cars and prior to figuring it out puts a dog and a pirate in charge of his car repair. I'm no technician, but that couldn't be a good idea.

The Goodbye Girl is a bittersweet comedy about relationships and taking chances. Though it deals with the human condition, what most quickly comes to mind are those wickedly comedic scenes featuring Richard Dreyfuss in an Oscar-winning role. He plays a struggling actor with a sharp tongue who has sublet an apartment from single mom Marcia Mason, a divorcée with horrific taste in men, who are always running out on her. She is left high and dry once more, stuck sharing her apartment with Dreyfuss when he hasn't the heart to enforce his lease and toss out mother and daughter.

Neil Simon's play shines under the direction of Herbert Ross as these two mismatched people find their contempt changing into mutual admiration. Quinn Cummings is more interesting than most precocious child stars; she seems brighter and her manner is prickly instead of cloying. Watch this film just for the scene in which Dreyfuss plays Richard III in an off-off-Broadway play. He lisps, he limps, he screams. It is the worst theater you will ever see--and thoroughly hilarious. --Rochelle O'Gorman

    5 out of 5 stars My Wife's Favorite Movie.......2007-06-28

Richard Dreyfuss, Marsha Mason, great story, romantic, funny and extremely well written. Why they even thought to remake this 1977 classic for television is beyond me. You just don't find chemistry on film like this very often. Richard Dreyfuss won a much deserved Academy Award for his outstanding performance, and Marsha Mason was perfect as these two performers jelled into one of the best and funniest love relationships ever.

I had to buy this DVD for my wife, who could watch this movie morning, noon and night. A real Hollywood romantic comedy that set the tone for all that followed. Quinn Cummings will win your heart over as the young daughter of Marsha Mason. An extremely entertaining experience for adult couples, yet gentle enough for younger teens as well.

    4 out of 5 stars Golden Oldie!!!.......2007-05-18

This movie is one of Neil Simon's best, especially with the addition of Marsha Mason(his real-life wife!!) It is a fun, real life story and I loved it!!
Richard Dreyfuss is so young in this and I'm sure starting his brillant career
If you want a "feel-good" somewhat chick flick, then this is a sure bet, and I feel it is timeless!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Goodbye Girl.......2007-05-13

Super movie. Funny, yet sophisticated! Both Richard Dreyfuss and Marsha Mason are terrific! And so is "the kid"! Too bad they don't make 'em like this anymore!

    5 out of 5 stars Goodbye Girl.......2007-03-26

First saw this years ago, but never forgot it. A very funny, intelligent, typical Neil Simon film. Simply heartwarming.

5 out of 5 stars a great Neil Simon story adapted for the screen.............2007-03-14

THE GOODBYE GIRL is a wonderful Neil Simon romantic comedy (with emphasis on screwball). The film takes the formula of THE ODD COUPLE (another wonderful film that examines the relationship between a pair of opposites trying to compromise in a living situation) with a twist. Paula McFadden (Marsha Mason) is an out-of-work dancer and single mother whose boyfriend has abandoned her and her young daughter, Lucy (Quinn Cummings)--not a surprise. However, he also subletted the apartment to his out-of-work actor friend, Elliot Garfield (Richard Dreyfuss). This wasn't what Paula had in mind. This wasn't what Elliot had in mind. Nevertheless, the eccentric Elliot--who chants and eats odd, diet specific food-- and the embittered Paula, who has vowed to stay away from actors--must agree to tolerate each other (to put it nicely). This doesn't come easily.

This film has so many wonderful and funny scenes, and Marsha Mason and Richard Dreyfuss have wonderful screen chemistry even when they are at each other's throats. Wonderfully entertaining......Dreyfuss basically steals the movie. You'll love it.

For those who can't get enough of those Barney songs, here's a made-for-video show packed full of song and dance. The story line is oh-so thin as Barney and his friends sing 27 songs in only 56 minutes, so Barney is usually singing or introducing a new song. For anyone who has been watching the decade that Barney has been on the airwaves, most of the songs are Barney standards: "Mr. Sun," "The Airplane Song," "Baby Bop Hop," and "I Love You." They are mixed in with all-time favorites "Itsy Bitsy Spider," "A Camping We Will Go," and the like. Many of Barney's original kid friends return looking much older and wiser. No big landmark production here, just a "greatest hits" of Barney tunes that should have fans singing and dancing around the tube for nearly an hour. --Doug Thomas

my 18 mo old son immediately loved this video because it has lots of songs without much dialog in between so it holds his attention throughout. he loves videos with kids and lots of singing. he loves that many of the songs have hand/body movements that he tries to imitate. he repeatedly asks for this video.

I had never actually watched Barney before I bought my 8-month-old son this VHS. He loves watching Barney. He watches this video straight through. Moreover, he is mesmerized by this video while sitting in front of the TV. Colorful TV commercials or Cartoons don't work as much as Barney to help us at the time of baby meals. It is a winner among all other baby materials. I wonder what it is about Barney that is so appealing. Is it normal for a baby to watch it three times a day? I am afraid to have VHS torn out soon.
I also like this video because the characters are warm and friendly while having lots of fun and singing and dancing. Due to my son's interest to this video, I have already ordered 4 more different Barney VHS/DVD.
