Shortly after James Dean died in a car crash, Robert Altman and George W. George (son of Rube Goldberg) set out to document the young star's brief life. The results are mixed. The narration (written by Stewart Stern, who wrote Rebel Without a Cause and befriended Dean) tries to get beyond the public image of Dean as the cool rebel to show the lonely young man underneath. It's a bit overwrought, but that's understandable, given the strong emotions Dean elicited from those who knew and loved him. But Martin Gabel is all wrong as narrator; his stentorian delivery turns the hot-blooded musings of youth into ponderous, pompous pronouncements totally lacking in humor. The most interesting element is the people of Fairmont, Indiana, where Dean grew up--straightforward, direct, and proud of Dean not for the fame he attracted but for who he was.

The Bells of Cockaigne is an early appearance from Dean's days in television in New York. He plays the father of a sick child who gambles his week's pay to try to earn enough to take his son "somewhere warm and dry." Gene Lockhart is the stubborn old Irishman who ultimately gives up his own dreams to help Dean. This half-hour program (complete with ads) was live TV; the kinescope is of questionable quality, but already Dean shows some of the talent and charisma of his later work.--Geof Miller
Description
ACADEMY AWARD® nominee Stewart Stern (Teresa; Rachel, Rachel), who scripted James Dean's Rebel Without a Cause, also wrote this 1957 documentary about the young star's tragically short life and career. Narrated by actor Martin Gabel, the film was directed, produced, and edited by fellow nominee Robert Altman (M*A*S*H, Nashville, The Player, Short Cuts) and screenwriter George W. George (Desert Sands). It follows Dean from his humble beginnings on a farm in Fairmount, Indiana, to his OSCAR®-nominated roles in East of Eden and Giant, which was nearing completion when he was killed on September 30, 1955. Included are his traffic safety film for television and East of Eden test, while Altman later explored his enduring appeal in the Broadway play and movie Come Back to the 5 and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. While Disney didn't invent Winnie the Pooh, nor first animate him, it certainly has Americanized the British bear into a cartoon character hardly resembling A.A. Milne's original 1924 creation. Although Disney's four Storybook Classics titles (from 1966) were somewhat faithful to Milne's concept, subsequent titles (especially in the Playtime and Learning series) descended into second-rate TV fare. All this to say that Disney has redeemed itself with The Book of Pooh, a fresh batch of Pooh stories evoking a nostalgic nod to the original. The Disney Channel's full-length film Stories from the Heart is a puppet rendition of Pooh, set in a sparkling world of computer animation (not unlike Bear in the Big Blue House, which shares the same executive producer and director, Mitchell Kriegman). The puppets (by Shadow Projects) may take some getting used to by viewers accustomed to animated cartoons, yet they'll appreciate the characters' lifelike personalities. The 77-minute program is a collection of six tales focusing on Pooh, Piglet, Owl, and the gang (though Kanga and Roo are noticeably absent). Mark Zaslove deserves writing kudos for subtle humor (reminiscent of Milne) and storytelling restraint uncharacteristic of Disney. Highlights include "Eeyore's Tailiversary," in which Eeyore receives a surprise party to celebrate the day he and his tail became attached, and "Tigger's Replacement," which chronicles Tigger's attempts to teach Piglet how to be a Tigger. (Lessons in bouncing and Tiggerisms are part of his Rigorous Tiggerous Training Program.) Many of the puppets' voices are familiar, such as Jim Cummings (The Tigger Movie) as Pooh and Tigger. Six musical numbers round out this welcome entry in Disney's Winnie the Pooh collection. --Lynn Gibson

5 out of 5 stars Super Super Wonderful.......2007-01-27

My 17 month old absolutely loves this DVD. I have other Pooh DVDs, but the baby would only watch this one.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid this Pooh movie!.......2007-01-26

My 18 mo. daughter and I watch lots of Pooh movies (more than 12 now) and this one is the worst by far. The animation is annoying and cheesy and did not hold her interest at all like the other Pooh films. Piglet's Big Movie, The Tigger Movie, Adventures of Winnie the Pooh are her favorites. Very Merry Pooh Year is a good one as well.

1 out of 5 stars Get a REAL book about Pooh.......2006-03-17

Sorry, but this movie had me almost grinding my teeth the whole time I was watching it. I was tempted to turn it off a number of times, but thought, "I'll at least give it a chance." Well, it had its chance, and it failed miserably.

Why did they get rid of Kanga and Roo and replace them with some annoying little bird named Kessie? Was it so Owl could have a bird companion? I have no idea what the logic behind that decision was, but I think it was a very poor one. Kanga and Roo added a lot to the original "Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" and I miss Kanga's mothering influence (the only female in the whole story) and Roo's childish innocence. Kessie sticks out like a sore thumb, and though she's a female, she doesn't have the warmth and sweetness of Kanga.

I haven't even mentioned the puppets and backdrops. Ug. That's about all I can say. The puppets don't move in even a remotely convincing way and the backdrops are way too bright and blurry. It doesn't even look like the Hundred Acre Wood.

The dialogue is, in keeping with other recent Pooh failures, dull and lacking humor. The stories themselves, if re-written with a more witty dialogue, would maybe be okay, but not done with puppets. If they took those stories (except for the one about Tessie -- they would have to replace that one with a story about Kanga and Roo), and animated them in the same style as the original Pooh shorts, that may be something.

The American Christopher Robin is all wrong. I always loved to hear that sweet, gentle voice with the delicate British accent he had in the original movie. Making him an American makes him seem just like any other American boy, not Pooh's Christopher Robin. His mother in "The Book of Pooh" is ridiculous. One minute, the room is obviously a mess, and the next minute it's clean. Any mother would have been like, "How the heck did that happen?" Instead, she says, "Oh, I must have made a mistake." Yeah right! She must have short-term memory loss! And what's with cutting their heads off? Why is it so terrible to see their faces?

I did like how reading was emphasized in this movie, but the cons far out-weighed the pros, and I'm sure I can find another much better movie that illustrates how important reading is. Or, I could just do what I've always done and read actual paper books to my kids. Doesn't that illustrate the same point much better? There are lots of very cute Pooh books out there, and my son has quite a few and loves them. My advice to you is to skip this "Book of Poo" (purposely miss-spelled) and instead spend your money on a real paper book, or a few, about Pooh.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL POOH DVD!!!!.......2006-01-07

My 19 mnth. old daughter watches this every day and LOVES it. She is even trying to sing the very catchy songs. I love it also, they really do come to life, the colors are so bright, and the songs are adorable. Highly recommended!!

4 out of 5 stars A nice replacement to the now cancelled show........2005-12-03

With Playhouse Disney turning ever more away from traditional Disney (such as cancelling this charming show), I highly recommend this DVD. Your child can play at least a few episodes again and again. Not as rambunctious and hyper as some of the newer shows on the channel. This show has a lot of the heart of the original "Many Adventures" movie unlike the "New Adventures" cartoon which was moved outside of the Playhouse Disney environment and loaded with all of their self promotional commercials.

Prepare to go behind the scenes of one of the nation s most tragic and inexplicable murders. By all appearances, Scott and Laci Peterson were the perfect couple - until Christmas Eve 2002, when 28-year-old Laci went missing while walking her dog. After an agonizing almost four-month search, her body, and that of her unborn child were found in the Richmond marina at Point Isabel. 4 out of 5 stars DVD Review.......2007-05-12

I think the movie was well done and the actors played their parts well. I was watching the actual trial and facts in the movie followed the trial very close.

5 out of 5 stars pretty good.......2006-07-13

dean cain did a good job, i thought it could of been better, but the points and details were pretty much key and some parts lacked..but over all it was pretty good

4 out of 5 stars broad, choppy, yet interesting take on a very important case.......2006-06-08

My curiosity and heightening interest in the Laci Peterson case finally compelled me to rent this film. Having become heavily focused on all aspects of the case from the time I read Sharon Rocha's recent heart-tugger "For Laci," I was very interested in seeing the film that was formulated and inspired by Amber Frey's quickly released book "Witness."

My opinions on the performance of Dean Cain clearly will not differ from those of anyone else's on this site; he did a remarkable job at hitting it right on the nail. His eyes, his mannerisms, his behavior...it was all amazingly on target. In his interviews and conversations with others about Laci, Scott Peterson has been known for using "uh" and "um" more than actual words from the English language in order to bridge the gap between concocting his lies and actually saying them. The way he has stared into space and babbled aimlessly to the extent that he sometimes actually forgot the question he was initially asked speaks volumes in itself, and Dean Cain did a perfect job at re-enacting that.

As for the film focusing predominantly on Scott, his behavior and his two "composite" friends Tommy and Kate, I think what we have to understand here is that this movie was made just as Scott was arrested and taken to trial. That was a point in the case where everything started crashing down, and of course everyone wanted to get as much emphasis as they could on how Scott Peterson was reacting to everything surrounding his wife's disappearance, as well as the discovery of Laci and Conner's bodies. At that time, everyone really needed and wanted to see what Scott's present role was in all of this, and I think that was the portrait this movie tried to convey.

Granted, the movie was made much too early, but such is to be expected with cases like this--people are always eager to spawn a TV movie as quickly as possible. The scenes were choppy and seemed to end really abruptly. It was a quick-paced, 86-minute TV film that lacked emotion and close examination of Laci's family and friends, who deserve to have their perspective acknowledged.

All in all, though, it was a good enough film for what it was: a quick, informative story that wanted to lay out some facts and shed some light on Scott's overall demeanor. Even if some of the information was a bit scattered and wayward, they did a good job at zooming in on Scott and revisiting some of the word-to-word conversations that he had with police, Amber, friends, and members of Laci's family.

It is a truly gripping story, unforgettable and worthy of a fuller portrait (similar to the book that Laci's mother Sharon wrote earlier this year). Given a few more years (or maybe a lot more years), I think this will make a terrific movie, providing more complete details and a well-rounded pursuit of the feelings and emotions experienced by everyone involved. It's a case with very raw human emotions that America has really gravitated to, and it is really a startling moment from history that people will remember for decades to come. A future movie could include areas about Scott and Laci's courtship, marriage, and life before December 24, 2002. So much has been documented about Scott, his mistress Amber Frey, and the charges he has faced, but it would be nice to get even more on sweet Laci--the innocent victim who was mere weeks away from delivering her first child when an indescribable crime took it all away from her. Discussing all these details would surely make an excellent film that I would watch without hesitation, and I have no doubt that it will eventually happen.

4 out of 5 stars Scott, Scott, Scott.......2006-03-12

I first watched this on USA. I did find it on DVD at Best Buy. There are definitely things that are incorrect. There's way too much focus on Scott, not enough on Laci or her family (including Conner), and way too much on Tommy and Kate. Not enough coverage with Amber, either. I think this movie was made too early, because it ends with his arrest. They should have waited a year or two and at least have the facts. But I still like it, because it is actually a good drama. I also like the music that builds up to scenes and in the end. I feel for Laci, Conner and her family, with all the hell they must be going through. R.I.P.

2 out of 5 stars Started out OK.......2006-01-22

PERFECT HUSBAND is a watchable film, but far from perfect. It just moves too slowly for its own good. Add the annoying best friend who refused to believe anything bad about Scott Peterson and this made it a reasonably difficult 84 minutes to sit through.

Those criticisms aside, Dean Cain was quite good in his role as Scott, as was the grieving Dee Wallace as Laci's mother. However at the end of the day, why does a movie like this get made when this sort of thing goes on all the time every day of the week across the world. Was there something particular about these cirumstances that warranted a film? I ask this because the script for the film was not written well enough to pull the viewer in. Not enough information was presented to the viewer to help us form an opinion.

James Stewart and June Allyson enjoyed one of their gee-whiz pairings in The Stratton Story, a baseball biopic with an easy swing. Stewart plays Monty Stratton, who, according to the film, is a country boy plowing the back forty when a transient scout (Frank Morgan) discovers him and hooks him up with the Chicago White Sox. Stratton has a couple of great years, only to be accidentally shot in a hunting accident, which results in his leg being amputated. If you think this is the end of the story, you might want to check the fact that The Stratton Story was one of the biggest box-office hits of 1949. The film rests on director Sam Wood's eye for outdoors American spaces--a country road, small-time baseball parks--and on the can-do chemistry of Stewart and Allyson, whose first teaming this was. (The Glenn Miller Story and Strategic Air Command would follow.) Audiences adored the lanky Stewart playing off the tiny, low-voiced, indomitably perky Allyson, even if the material is as programmed as a studio pitch meeting. Lovers of nostalgic baseball pictures won't have any problem with the cornball script (a few big-league cameos pass by, notably Bill Dickey). Agnes Moorehead is Stratton's down-home Maw, though she's mostly restricted to a backlot farmhouse. It won an Oscar for best original story, back when they gave Oscars for that. --Robert Horton

Description

Chicago White Sox pitcher Monty Stratton is an affable long drink of water with an easy, whiplike delivery and a pitch so unhittable the young phenom racks up consecutive 15-win seasons. But Stratton's greatest victory doesn't come on the manicured green diamonds of our national pastime. James Stewart portrays Stratton, who loses a leg in an accident just as his career is on the rise...and whose triumph over despair and disability leads him to pitch again. Stewart signed on for the role when he realized the film would be an inspiration to injured World War II GIs. The film still inspires. Awarded an Oscar?* for Best Motion Picture Story, directed by Sam Wood (The Pride of the Yankees) and supported by a top cast that includes real-life ballplayers, The Stratton Story is sports biography at its best.

4 out of 5 stars Standing Strong.......2006-06-26

The Stratton Story is a film about a baseball hero (James Stewart), a man who fought hard to go from being a farmer to a major name in pitching for the Chicago White Sox. Through his persistence and good attitude, he was able to begin an ideal life with a wife (June Allyson), to take care of the farm where his mother (Agnes Moorhead) lived, maintain his friendship with the man who got him his start (Frank Morgan), and have children. However, an accident left him without a right leg and therefore out of the game he loved.

Stewart is amazing as always, nonchalantly charismatic playing a highly respectable character with a heart of gold. Allyson is the ideal wife, strong-willed and wholesome, a treat as soon as she walks onto the screen. The two make a great team and the lovers theme "You Are My Shining Star" only serves to make the bond sweeter.

This film is a biopic, but the mood is not haughty as to seem overly important. This makes it easier to digest since it is heartfelt but not overplayed.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for Jimmy fans.......2005-09-07

This is a GREAT story about a Baseball player from a small town. Even though life throws him a few curve balls he still manages to make the most of the situation. The characters are lovable, and this story is one you'll take into your heart.

5 out of 5 stars Real Movies.......2004-12-22

Not your current fare of hyped up, computer generated, special effects gone wild type of film. This movie has screen legends of days gone by in a compelling true story.

I have seen most, if not all, of Jimmy Stewart's films and don't recall anything he had ever done that he wasn't believeable in. June Allyison, with that foggy voice, was only one of my boyhood sceen goddesses. What can you say about Agnes Moorehead - only one of the great character actresses of the "greatest generation!" And, you have four of 1949's professional baseball players apearing as themselves, including Bill Dickey.

A true love story that will lift all boats!

5 out of 5 stars The Stratton Story.......2001-07-10

For Baseball Lovers and/or for those whom just enjoy Jimmy Stewart movies, you will love this movie. Stewart plays Monty Stratton, an upcoming WhiteSox pitcher who gets into an hunting accident and loses his leg. Stewart brillianty portrays the one legged man, who musters the strength and courage to go beyond his handicap and triumph against amazing odds. June Allyson excellently portrays his loving, supportive wife. Many top baseball stars of the time also participate in the movie. One of the few baseball movies that races through the entire range of human emotions with tremendous success.

5 out of 5 stars A Grand Slam.......2000-02-07

Here is a great movie both for those who love baseball and those who don't. The story of Monty Stratton who had just made his mark as a major league pitcher with the Chicago White Sox. He had just completed a fabulous year and was to be the Sox mainstay for years to come when an unfortuanate hunting accident resulted in the amputation of his right leg. His courage and discipline combined with the faith of his wife and family provide a marvelous and miraculous result. James Stewart is perfect for the title role. Combining a down home relaxed approach with determination he brings the portrayal alive. June Allyson (in her first of three pairings with Stewart) is excellent as the supportive wife and Agnes Moorehead plays Stratton's mother with a sense of pioneer honesty and compassion. The thing true baseball fans will appreciate most is the authenticity of both the uniforms and the ballparks. Since the movie was made in the forties the ball parks were still available as were the uniforms. Also in the movie were many big leaguers including Jimmy Dykes who managed Stratton for the Sox. All in all this movie was sensitive without being sappy and handled a tough story with genuineness and integrity.

5 out of 5 stars The DVD is now the complete movie - it's been corrected.......2007-03-23

I bought the DVD when it first came out and just got around to watching it (it IS 3 hours, and I'd seen it when it originally aired), and discovered I had a defective DVD. Thanks to reading the below comments, I knew it was a manufacturer's error and contacted the manufacturer's customer service, asking if the problem had been corrected and, if so, would they exchange it. Within the hour, they sent me an email requesting an address to replace the disc. I've just watched the new and improved DVD, so buy with confidence! (And the movie is really well done.)

3 out of 5 stars Misleading--this is only the second half of the series........2005-12-24

This series was originally on public television, and the original story encompassed JFK's life from childhood through his election to Congress. This DVD was a disappointment as it begins at the period just prior to WW2, leaving out some fascinating material dealing with Old Joe's ambassadorship to Great Britain, which was a fiasco, and other interesting components of JFK's early life.

Setting that aside, this one is worth owning and viewing. It gives a balanced view of the famous "PT109" incident, as well as of JFK's first run for Congress. Just know that this DVD is not the complete "JFK: Reckless Youth" series.

1 out of 5 stars Only 1/2 the Mini-Series!.......2005-10-07

Previous reviewer is correct, this release contains only the second half of the mini-series. The box clearly states 183 minutes, yet the one disc contains only 91. It should have been a two disc set. Someone at MPI really blew it on this one. The film film itself is not bad...

1 out of 5 stars Only Half The Story.......2005-09-17

This much delayed release of the 1992 mini-series is one that I hade long awaited. However, my expectations have turned to dismay as the disc appears only to contain the second half of the show.
Despite the packaging and disc listing a running time of 180 minutes, my copy, purchased in Cambridge, Mass, runs for merely 91 minutes.
Inquiries to the manufacturer have proven to be less than helpful, and I am therefore unable to recommend a purchase of what should have been a welcome addition to the DVD market for this title.
I look forward to the rectification of this over-sight by the disc manufacturer, but fear that it may be a long time coming.

1 out of 5 stars Hmmmm. I wonder if this will be like another Patrick Dempsey..........2005-09-15

Campus flick where he teaches everybody the 'cool, new dance' he got from a National Geographic type show? Okay, I'm just saying Patrick Dempsey? Uber-nerd from the 80s? As JFK? Well, I'm quite sure he's buried his past in film to be the right man to play JFK. Okay, just as long as JFK doesn't give money to the most popular girl in school so she'll look like she's dating him. Who knows - maybe Kirstie Alley will appear as Marilyn Monroe, so Patrick and her can have a 'comic-reteaming' after another movie they did in the 80s (Loverboy). Okay, okay, just as long as JFK doesn't hit it off with one older woman, and through the grapevine, become a gigolo of sorts who just talks to and dances with the older women - you know, what gigolos did in the 80s. It was all so watered down. Just like this. You've been warned!

5 out of 5 stars Robert Altman's Masterpiece.......2006-12-22

THE JAMES DEAN STORY is a powerful movie. It is an intimate story of Dean told in the simplest of images and wonderful narration. A simple homage to an American icon who's effects of his brief time here still linger.

5 out of 5 stars Eerie and Intense!.......2005-03-24

This film has no actors in it but instead it has real people who knew James Dean. Among them are his aunt and uncle, his drama teacher, and many New York friends. There are numerous rare anecdotes and hundreds of stunning photographs shown in the film. Also, there are many rare film clips of him, including a short one of him at a car race, a clip of him with Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo, and even a recording of him talking with his grandparents! The most eerie and memorable clip was an outake from "East of Eden" showing James and Dick Davalos talking about Adam Trask. James does a spectacular job in this scene and it is very moving! This, to me, was the best part of the movie. If you are a devoted fan of James Dean, don't miss this rare treat!

5 out of 5 stars Lonely Bird.......2004-03-01

The depictions here are the only accurate substantial accounts of Jimmy Dean's life. There are no bios that can even scratch the surface about him. All of them (authors) put their ideologies above the truth of who Jimmy was. It's too bad that the only truth about this man can never be fully told even by "some" who "claim" they knew him. Christy White is the only one and maybe Bill Bast who appear to be faithfull to his past. The other closest is "maybe" the movie made by TNT in 2003.

Peace..

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Film.......2004-02-20

This film is a must-see for anyone wanting to know more about James Dean. It was released in 1957, over a year after Dean died, and we get to see and listen to family members who are no longer living. We hear from other citizens of Fairmount, Indiana, who knew "Jimmy." We also see and hear show business friends and acquaintances. It also includes alot of great still photographs.

Please remember this film was made in the late 50s, and its dated. It sort of depressed me watching it because it really brought home the fact that "Jimmy" has been dead almost 50 years. But I would think this film would be a necessary part of anyone's collection of James Dean films.

4 out of 5 stars invaluable to anyone who wants to know more about James Dean.......2003-09-24

the information from this documentary is invaluable and the insight from his family and the people who saw him on a regular basis gives a glimpse of Jimmy that not many people saw. it is one more facet of a brilliant diamond that shone for too brief a time.one word of caution to anyone with asthma, high blood pressure, heart disese,or tramatic stress disorder, the reenactment of his fatal car crash combined with pictures from the actual crash site are a little too graphic for some.watch at your own risk.

THE JAMES DEAN STORY The Life and Death of an American Legend James Dean's death fifty years ago on September 30, 1955, robbed the screen of the fast-rising young star who would receive OSCAR® nominations for East of Eden and Giant. Dean's tragically short life and career are recalled by those who knew him best in this in-depth documentary, featuring his traffic safety short for television and East of Eden test. The film features the work of two fellow nominees: Stewart Stern (Teresa), who scripted Dean's Rebel Without a Cause, and director Robert Altman (The Player, Gosford Park). Narrated by actor Martin Gabel, it follows Dean from his humble beginnings on a farm in Fairmount, Indiana, to his role in Giant, which was nearing completion when he crashed. Written by STEWART STERN Narration by MARTIN GABEL Titles Designed by MAURICE BINDER Musical Score by LEITH STEVENS Directed, Produced, and Edited by GEORGE W.
