Bob Dylan - World Tour 1966: The Home Movies

Starring:Bob Dylan

Product Type: DVD
Editorial Review:
Description
With a set of drum sticks and his 8 mm color home movie camera, Mickey Jones toured the world in 1966 with Bob Dylan and The Band. He captured on film what became known as "the tour that changed Rock and Roll forever." The booing crowds, the scathing reviews, the stomping feet, the infamous cry of "Judas!" …..all of this in response to Dylan trading in his acoustic folk guitar for a hard edged, electric sound. The "Royal Albert Hall" CD, Live 1966, remains the only commercial release from the 1966 Bob Dylan World Tour. Now, for the first time on home video, musician turned actor Mickey Jones (Sling Blade, Home Improvement) chronicles the legendary 1966 Bob Dylan World Tour through his recently discovered films. Background Music: All Along The Watchtower, Ballad of a Thin Man, Highway 61 Revisited, Like A Rolling Stone, Positively 4th Street, Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again, Subterranean Homesick Blues, The Times They Are A Changin', Watchin' the River Flow

Description
For the first time on home video, musician turned actor Mickey Jones chronicles the legendary 1966 Bob Dylan World Tour through his recently discovered home movies! As he toured the world in 1966 with Bob Dylan and The Band, he captured on film what became known as the tour that changed Rock and Roll forever. This new version includes new, exculsive interviews with Charlie Daniels discussing his 1970s Dylan album recordings, Johnny Rivers and Trini Lopez discussing Dylans influence on their music, and Mickey Jones with new revelations, including the surprising truth about Play F#@%ing Loud!", contradicting the conclusion in Scorceses No Direction Home.

My friend has a better title: "Glimpses of Bob".......2007-01-23
I'm giving this one star because "zero stars" isn't an option. There's not a whole lot of Dylan in this, and the "home movies" are just what you'd expect from the days of 8mm film: grainy, blurry, black and white films from the tour...not "of the tour", just from the tour. Tourist kind of stuff, with a lot of the back of Dylan's head, and every once in awhile he'll turn around - which is why my friend has retitled this DVD "Glimpses of Bob".
And listening to Mickey Jones reminisce about his glory days of 40 years ago is kind of tedious; Mickey's looking like he's seen better days.
Save your money up and get "No Direction Home", much more entertaining and informative.
A Documentary on Some Guy's Tour With Dylan - But Dylan's Not in it...........2007-01-10
I am a huge Dylan fan and have watched entire documentaries and tv specials just to see two words uttered about him but "1966 World Tour - The Home Movies" stretches the bounds of legitimate Dylan enthusiasm. To say it will add nothing to your Dylan collection would be an understatement. In fact, you might be just as likely to catalog this video under "miscellaneous" in your movie library, as it is more about some guy who Dylan employed as a drummer for a while in 1966 than it is about Dylan. I don't know if Dylan refused to allow the release of actual 1966 video footage of him or if he just avoided this guy when the camera was rolling. Regardless, if you want to see good "home movie" footage of Dylan, this is not the place.
Awesome behind the scenes look at seminal tour.......2006-11-13
With all due respect to the reviewer above - no full Dylan performance is really not the point - this is Mickey Jones' personal footage of the 1966 tour - an insider's view that is well worth the money - aside from some very cool never seen footage of the Beatles, Mr. Jones has great interviews with some of his 'other bosses' - Johnny Rivers, Trini Lopez, and some cool inteviews from other quarters. (Charlie Daniels on the making of Nashville Skyline is awesome) all through the DVD Mr. Jones makes a great 'everyman' in his observations and obvious love for the principals involved - after all, he was the backbeat for many 'soundtrack of the 60's' songs - if I were the drummer for a tour featuring Bob Dylan and The Band, and just remembered I had some home movies stashed away (in metal cans - the film is some of the best preserved footage I've ever seen) you can bet I would share them - Thanks for Sharing, Mickey! (It's a thing of beauty)

Much more than title!!!.......2006-09-22
What a treasure!!! Mickey Jones, through his camera shows never before footage of the most important musicians of the time. This was done before all the advancements in photography snd what you see is real! Mickey Jones left us a time capsule. The Beatle stories are cool! After we watched this DVD we felt like we just had a very pleasant visit with Mickey in our living room, telling and showing us all this music history. Thank you Mickey Jones for the TREAT!!!!
Misleading.......2006-09-13
Lessons learned: Read the reviews. The low end reviews are pretty accurate in their descriptions: "This is a movie about Mickey, not Bob".
Perhaps I am unfairly comparing his stuff to the Scorsese or Pennebaker documentaries, which is a pretty high standard. The bottom line is that this is really very boring for anyone, but fanatics...
Only die hard fans need buy this.......2006-01-03
I found this documentary interesting in places and boring in others. You watch the dvd and end up feeling that Jones made it all about himself instead of Dylan. I was also left wondering how much of it was true and how much of it was poetic lisence on his part. Only but this if you are a die hard fan.
Excellent Companion.......2005-01-15
This DVD is an excellent companion to the Royal Albert Hall concert CD. This is not a performance video but rather a look behind the scenes during that tour.
To watch this DVD and listen to the Royal Albert Hall concert CD is a must for people who want to understand what made Dylan so special.
The people who are calling this DVD rubbish and giving it 1 start don't get it. Real Bob Dylan fans and fans of rock history should pick it up along with the concert CD.
4 stars - my only regret is that you have to purchase the concert CD of the Royal Albert Hall show seperate. I think they should bundle the 2.
Not a concert video in spite of the title.......2004-10-02
Upon its release, this 90-minute DVD was heavily criticised by fans, who felt that a DVD with the words "World Tour 1966" in the title should contain at least some concert footage. (It does, but without sound.)
But "Word Tour 1966" is (sadly) not a concert video. It is a collection of primitive silent home movie clips, some of which actually include Bob Dylan in the frame. They were taken by drummer Mickey Jones, who also provides narration. And he does a pretty good job, actually, providing insights and little anecdotes, usually without getting boring.
Jones has a fair amount of reasonably interesting stories, including why Dylan decided to separate his sets into acoustic and electric ones, the musicians' reaction to people booing the electric sets, and other trivia of interest (solely) to Dylan fanatics. The image quality of the home movies is good considering their age, and while the scenes from those clips are not too interesting in and of themselves, they make a pretty good backdrop for Jones' narratives.
But still...this is a bit of a sham, really. The title certainly promises a lot more than it delivers, and most people won't need this at all.
2 1/2 stars. Only for diehards.
