5 out of 5 stars Classy Marilyn Documentary.......2004-09-03

"The Legend Of Marilyn Monroe" (which debuted in 1964, just two years after Marilyn's death) is a first-rate documentary film from famed producer David L. Wolper. Wonderfully narrated by John Huston, this black-and-white film traces the life and tragic early death of one of the most popular and talked-about movie icons of all-time: Norma Jean Baker (aka: Marilyn Monroe).

Born in June 1926, Marilyn's all-too-short 36-year life is detailed with style, grace, and tenderness in this film, which features a beautiful musical score by Arthur Morton.

Marilyn's perpetual loneliness and vulnerability come through, even via the short snippets of film we see here, painting the portrait of a sad and ultimately-doomed young lady. Marilyn's three (failed) marriages are, of course, touched upon here (although not in a wealth of detail), including an interview (circa 1963 or early 1964) with her first husband, James Dougherty, whom Miss Monroe wed when she was a mere 16 years of age. Dougherty was 21 at the time.

Completely omitted from this documentary are the rumors of Marilyn's "alleged" affairs with President John F. Kennedy and the President's brother, Robert F. Kennedy. Also missing here is the scuttlebutt and gossip surrounding Marilyn's untimely death. Many people believe there was foul play involved in her demise, but there is nothing in this film about that subject. Perhaps, though, these omissions are for the best. The purpose of this film, after all, was not to stir up scandal, but to delve into the "life" of Norma Jean/Marilyn.

Many rare film clips are presented here, giving the viewer an even deeper look into the world of this famous blonde bombshell, via many of the people who knew her best. One of the greatest (and funniest) of all Marilyn movie clips is shown in this film -- her "one-joke walk-on" with Groucho Marx in "Love Happy" (made in 1950), which has the famous eyebrow-twitching comedian ogling Marilyn up one side and down the other. .... "Some men are following me," says Marilyn during her brief appearance. As Groucho peruses Marilyn's obvious curves, Marx wryly replies: "Really? I can't understand why." :)

Mr. Wolper's unique style shines through during this film, reminding me of another of his excellent 1964 efforts, "Four Days In November", another superlative documentary film, which concentrates (in almost minute-by-minute detail) on the events of November 1963, when President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas.

Marilyn Monroe died in early August 1962, and (like JFK) is forever frozen in our minds at a very young age. And, like President Kennedy, Marilyn's death at such an early time in her young life has created this "mythical" aura around the actress.

DVD Special Features include "Memories Of Marilyn Monroe", which is a 31-minute segment (presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo sound) featuring bonus interviews with David Wolper and Director Terry Sanders, providing additional insight into the making of this film and their personal thoughts on Marilyn. Some interesting tidbits about the film and Marilyn's life are revealed in this bonus interview section. Good stuff.

Additional portions of the interview segments with Wolper and Sanders are also included as "book end" pieces surrounding the actual 50-minute documentary film itself.

A Photo Gallery of Marilyn images is also included, plus some text-only screens, including a nice "Biography" section on "MM".

DVD Specs:
Video -- Full Frame (1.33:1 aspect ratio).
Audio -- 2.0 Dolby Digital (Mono).
Subtitles -- None.
Packaging -- Keep Case.
Paper Inserts -- None.

The story of Marilyn Monroe is a sad and bittersweet one from start to finish. And this film captures those emotions quite clearly, along with happier moments as well. This DVD is a valuable resource for anyone interested in "The Legend Of Marilyn Monroe".

"Gravity catches up with all of us" "Where's that bourbon." "This guy comes on strong, and masculine, and from this she is suppose to fall flat on her face, well she doesnt, but theres a little guy with glasses in the corner, perspiring a little, and I notice my white knight in the corner!" "I ain't never been called a hill billy in my life" "Hi. Hello guido" "When me and my sister felt lost we pretended we were in a dark cave and were trying to find our way out" "Peggy, do you still have that bottle of Vermouth! I've got Bourbon we can make manhattans!' "So the one legged jockey says, the one legged jockey says, dont worry about me baby, I ride sidesaddle!" Hey Tony Curtis, you got any Maraschino cherries, oh never mind" Tony Curtis, "Maraschino cherries!"

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal!!.......2001-10-12

As a die hard Marilyn Monroe fan, I'm thrilled by the combination of legends such as Marilyn Monroe and David Wolper!.

I have close to every piece of Marilyn literature ever written. This one however, seems to be a catch far above the rest!

I'm aware that this controversial picture was aired once in the 1960's, and banned from all international audiences. Finally the truth about Marilyn is exposed!! I can't wait!!!!

Description

This feature documentary debunks the myths about Marilyn Monroe and her legacy. Through the eyes of her first husband, Jim Dougherty, the truth about Marilyn Monroe and her early life as Norma Jeane Baker is revealed in captivating interviews with this Renaissance man. Clearly, without Jim Dougherty, Marilyn Monroe would never have morphed into the iconic Hollywood superstar that she became. Most importantly, Jim was her Svengali, her first lover, and her friend for life. Even though Hollywood seduced Marilyn into the world of bright lights and stardom, she still yearned for Jim, despite the veiled threat of ruining her meteoric career. In effect, the Hollywood moguls threatened her, and beguiled her into leaving Jim for the lure of mega-money and celebrity. But the price was steep, and she was victimized by the nefarious world of Tinsel Town. The film features numerous unseen photos and rare clips of Marilyn Monroe, integrated with mesmerizing interviews with Jim Dougherty as well as other individuals that knew the truth about her legacy.

1 out of 5 stars ****WARNING*****WARNING*******.......2006-09-26

This is the slowest, worst "documentary" I've seen to once again take advantage of Marilyn Monroe's name. It is the long rantings of an old codger who is trying to remember anything he can make up about his loveless marriage to the great Marilyn. She dropped him as soon as she could after the marriage was arranged. She saw where her life would end up if she stayed with him.

The woman he should be thanking and doing the documentary about is his present wife, who I'm sure has put up with a lot over the years. Let it go, Jim.....it's getting pathetic.

3 out of 5 stars sentimental but sloppy.......2006-02-06

I have to agree that the film is very poorly edited. It is touching and interesting, but poorly done.
FYI one of the pictures in one of the many photo montages is not Marilyn Monroe, it is a a Marilyn Monroe look-alike...me!
The picture has been my publicity shot for over 13 years and has been published in books and on many websites as being me in all that time. The producer refuses to admit his mistake, so to try to halt any future confusion I am letting you all know here.
As for the film...its worth seeing because Marilyn is in it.

2 out of 5 stars Marilyn's Man.......2006-01-03

I was so exited to get this NEW Documentary about Marilyn Monroe, I heard so many good reviews that I went for it! I'm not happy with the end product, I thought that it would have a more inside depth about her life before she became the movie star we all grew to admire, this documentary is about a man longing for the love he had and lost, sure there's a couple of clips and photographs I haven't seen before, every other clip and photo you'll see in this DVD you can find it in every other documentary out there!!!! like I mentioned this is just the melancholic, nostalgic desire of a man that never forgot his first wife, she just happend to be Marilyn Monroe.

5 out of 5 stars Norma Jeane as remembered by Jim Dougherty.......2005-12-23

One of the finest documentaries I have ever seen! Much of what we know about Marilyn Monroe, including the many untruths and salacious gossip that have been propagated over time, simply represents a mounting record of disappointing variations on a theme. Very little is known, however, about Norma Jeane and Jim Dougherty. This story will reveal, for the first time, many undisclosed details of the adolescent, formative stages of her life, when she was married to Jim Dougherty and on the verge of her emerging success. Marilyn's Man promises to end the mystery and put to rest many of the unanswered questions which, heretofore, have been the source of constant tabloid speculation. You will not find any juicy tidbits here that will resurrect conspiracy theories or fuel speculation about any alleged affairs. There are no outside influences or other actors with an agenda to rewrite history. This is simply the sweet reminiscence and truthful rendering of a screen legend told in the words of the man who remained devoted to her long after the 'Candle in the Wind' left this world. A must see for anyone who has a passion for character driven movies!

5 out of 5 stars I Love Marilyn and Jim for Marilyn's Man.......2005-10-13

I have been searching for Marilyn Monroe items to write about in school. I came across this movie online. I was hoping to get a real autograph from anything Marilyn signed and bring it into school but instead found Marilyn's Man interesting. I bought it on Dvd and loved this movie. I hope I can at least get an autographed copy from the producer of the movie to bring into school and share with my friends. I hope whoever else reads this will take consideration to see this movie like I did. Wish you all find this movie fun like I did.

1 out of 5 stars Portrait of a bad VHS tape.......2006-08-12

Alright..this is just a guess...but I think the dubious producers of this DVD managed to get a hold of a crappy fly-by-night VHS tape from back in the 80's (one with a few tracking problems I might add) and simply transferred it to DVD, flaws and all. Cheapo VHS tapes like this were legion back in the era of the Rubiks Cube and Pac-Man and should've stayed there.
For those unaware of such things, anyone and I mean ANYONE can grab a bunch of public domain footage of a celebrity, in this case Marilyn Monroe, and turn it into a documentary film provided you don't see any problem with repeating that same footage over and over again. There's nothing of much interest here outside of an interview with Robert Slatzer who comes across as genuinely regretful and subscribes to the "JFK killed MM" theory. Marilyn may not have survived her own demons but she'll certainly survive this shoddy product. Look elsewhere for a portrait of Marilyn Monroe.
