A journey on the Royal Canadian Pacific is not just a journey through the spectacular and dramatic Canadian landscape, but also a journey back through time in the footsteps of Kings and Queens, back to a more genteel age, a Golden Age of travel, when nothing was too much trouble.

5 out of 5 stars An Enriching Canadian Rail Experience.......2007-04-21

As echoed by the narrator on this enjoyable DVD, The Royal Canadian Pacific, from the "World Class Trains" series, this once-in-a-lifetime journey is not reserved only for the affluent. It is also a treasure for the average person who dreams of splurging on a fantastic rail trip of this caliber. For the price of a first-matinee movie ticket, this 55-minute DVD offers the viewer stunning vistas of Western Canada that an airplane ride cannot provide.

As you, the armchair traveler, climb aboard The Royal Canadian Pacific with a small group of eager passengers, you too can pretend to anticipate the gourmet meals and fine music in well-appointed railcars. Eloquent narration and seemingly gentle movements of the train make for a pleasant journey.

From your cozy chair or sofa, watch nature's bounty pass by like mobile landscape paintings. The map that unfolds during the DVD's running helps orient you to Western Canada's geography and history. Glancing out of the large, curtained window to your left (or right), listen to the history of First Nation people who once were the only inhabitants of the vast land known to us today as Canada -- not to mention the entire North American continent. After your virtual journey, you may never look upon a river, mountain or valley the same way ever again, for First Nation people considered these magnificent formations -- along with the sky -- to be sacred. In addition to the beautiful, if fleeting, scenes, you will hear spiritually ambient music that may leave you with a lasting impression of how people and other animals fit into nature's intricate tapestry.

Sip from a cup of tea as you also learn the history of The Royal Canadian Pacific itself and discover how, with the deep pockets of railroad barons, railroad construction literally created industries and towns across Canada. (This also happened in the United States.) In terms of European settlement in Canada, this railway journey explores only English and Scottish influences. The train does not travel to, from or within the French-settled province of Quebec. Therefore, those who are looking for a DVD about Quebec would need to look elsewhere.

The Royal Canadian Pacific is a relaxing, educational and entertaining DVD that will be worth repeated viewings. For all you know, one day it might inspire you to book the same luxurious rail journey. Believe me when I say that you will gain a new appreciation for the expression "All aboard!"

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful taste of Europe. .......2006-01-31

Fantastic camera shots and narration; it certainly makes you want to take this trip! Clearly shows how trains are truly the best and most relaxing way to travel.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Train Video.......2005-08-30

This one was done right. This series is a bit inconsistent (the polar express is really bland) and others are good but the production was a bit hasty and seemed not so well planned.

However this London to Venice video was very well done. The scenery was solid. The train interior and the shots of the cities travelled to were good. And the clips of Venice were overwhelmingly beautiful, a few were better than I'd even seen in non-train films. This one is a must have for train buffs.

Because people don't know of this series, it gets short shrift. The competitor "Travel The World By Train" series is way more consistent and better organized on average, but the price of the other series is way, way higher. In this series, even if one gets an average or not-so-hot one, it's only a few bucks. The other series is prohibitively expensive and sometimes not always available.

This video was one of the best values in train-oriented multimedia I've yet encountered.

The American Orient Express is a privately owned company and no relation to the British owned Orient Express. The train is a collection of cars that were purchased from museums and private collections throughout America. With nine exciting itineraries, the journeys trace jazz and blues to their origins in New Orleans, through the National Parks of the Pacific Coast, from hushed canyons to boiling mud pots, keeping the tradition of the golden age of rail with luxury and style.

A luxury train journey through Zimbabwe from Bulawayo to the natural wonder of the world, Victoria Falls. Reliving the golden age of the steam train, the rail route travels through some of the continent's best game country. The railway was a central plank of a planned British colonization of the entire African continent by Cecil John Rhodes, and the route is rich in historical traditions. Rhodes' private carriage is still used by the Train De Luxe on the journey.

For the price, it can't be beat.

I preferred the Blue Train DVD, but this one has more detail on historic background and culture, esp. of Zimbabwe. Dates to around 2002 or so, so not sure whether it still runs.

    5 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2006-01-31

2 out of 5 stars More a travelogue rather than a train aficionado DVD .......2005-01-09

I really had to think about giving this one 1 star because it is NOT what I expected. What I had expected to see was a run from Vancouver, BC to Banff though the eyes of a train engineer and to some extent the passengers...... What this DVD gives us is a travelogue from the passenegers point of view ...

The description of the 2 day trip is good but, another downer, this train does not have any sleeper cars so as far as I'm concerned it's a 3 star luxury train consisting of coach class cars (which they really never do show in the DVD) and two dinig rooom / bar cars .... The tain stops and overnights in Kamloops and all the passengers are bussed to a hotel .... at the hotel we get a view of a cheesy hick town review and I guess what would be considered a 'world class' hotel ... whatever that eans ... They don't show the rooms of any other amenities of the hotel itself ....

Also onec the train arrives in Banff the DVD finished ... can you believe that..... one of the most beautifull and scenic wonders in Canada and these dummies just end the DVD .... I mean even for this being a traelogue it's not good either

The only saving grace are the scenic views that are mostly fimed through the domed top of the two dining cars ....

Last but not least there in not even ONE shot from the engine down the track ... we see the engineer for a few mintes but the cameraman never thought of shooting what the engineer sees as they travel down the rails ... I mean this is the most sought after view of ANY rail enthusiast ....

All in all it's not worth it .. trust me ....

The Blue Train first ran in 1946 but, like South Africa itself, has had to change and make the journey into the modern world. All the best elements have been retained however; the standard of accommodation and service, like the breathtaking and varied scenery, are unsurpassed anywhere in the world. today as ever.

5 out of 5 stars Great reminiscenses, great quality.......2007-01-10

Opening teaser has no narrative and quality wasn't great. But it soon kicks into the program and that was FABULOUS. Really well put together.

The Jo'burg to Cape Town segment was much better, more detailed vs. Cape Town to Port Elizabeth. This segment was still v.enjoyable.

We've seen some of the area and traveled on Rovos Rail, so many fond memories. Sensational value given the price for anyone interested in vacationing in South Africa (would highly recommend, and I am not a SA or work for any tourist co. etc.)

    5 out of 5 stars Great Video.......2004-03-21

This DVD on the Blue Train was really great. The narration was great, it gave a feeling of what it is like to travel on the train, and it also showed some behind the scenes footage of the Blue Train being cleaned and prepared for its next journey. The video also included some footage of some beautiful South African towns and Cities including Pretoria and Cape Town.

    2 out of 5 stars Kinda Boring.......2006-06-27

I was a bit disappointed with this film. From the title I had assumed I might be seeing some spectacular mountainous snow and ice scenes... but not one drop. It was just lots of trees and water - all very nice - but not what I thought I was getting. Also as one previous review states there were no decent shots of the train's interior apart from the observation dome and the bar. I know the idea is to sell the trip not the train but a bit more imagination and interest in the actual train I'm sure would give an added dimension to the feature that wouldn't be wasted on the viewers. The introductory data on Stockholm was interesting and there still are some pretty good panoramic vistas to see so all is not lost but for some reason not enough to get me to give it more than 2 stars.

4 out of 5 stars The New Polar Express.......2006-06-02

I first purchased this DVD about 12 months ago. I wanted it to complete a set. I found that this DVD had lots of outside shots and showed scenery and interviews with interesting persons. Unlike most other train DVDs the personal interviews were mercifully short and did not advertise the company running the train. I have found that ALL the DVDs in this series were most informative. In fact the information contained in them has influenced my travel list. New Polar Express is wish number 2. This series is far superior to the first edition which was a sales pitch and teold how good thew trains wereI would recommend this DVD to any person of any age group.

    Yours etc.

    1 out of 5 stars No-go.......2006-03-17

Sadly the DVD is for the USA - the Region code for S.Africa is Region 2 which is also the format for the PAL system - so we are unable to watch this DVD . Is there any way to ensure that this error does not occur again?

2 out of 5 stars Save yourself some kroner.......2004-11-20

THE NEW POLAR EXPRESS is a travel documentary featuring the 5-day journey of the Polar Express, a tourist train, from Stockholm up through central Sweden, across the Arctic Circle, and over the border into Norway to the coastal city of Narvik - and back again by the same route. No, this isn't the animated POLAR EXPRESS of 2004 starring Tom Hanks in multiple roles.

My advice is to save yourself whatever kroner it takes to buy or rent the DVD, or what it costs to take the actual trip - the equivalent of two thousand dollars per person, double occupancy. The major attractions of the jaunt seem to be the midnight sun and the mountains of Norway. I suggest that if you go rather to Alaska, the midnight sun across the Arctic Circle will be the same, and both the mountains and the mosquitoes will be bigger. And you can perhaps find a cheeseburger along the way instead of the flatbread and jam sandwich and tea brewed in a battered kettle enjoyed in an animal skin tent by our intrepid vacationers.

The DVD presentation isn't all that great, either. If the operators of the Polar Express hope this production will boost reservations, think again. While the sleeper cars are vintage carriages from the old Orient Express (Paris-Istanbul), the interior shots linger in the more modern, domed observation car and the downstairs bar. While the former is suitably impressive, where does one sleep? There's no visual hint of the quality of the bedroom accommodations. And a description of the meals to be had along the way - except for the flatbread and jam feast - is non-existent. Oral intake aboard the Express seems to be limited to alcohol - lots of it.

The majority of the scenes filmed from the moving train are either looking forward along the line of cars towards the locomotive, or back towards the proverbial caboose. I can vouch that the metal skin of the cars is shiny and the tracks of the rail bed are well laid. And the narrative dialogue was written for grade schoolers, such as - and I'm paraphrasing:

"The travelers watched the train return to the station from the siding where it had been while they explored Narvik."

Oh, and how about that short trek at the rail stop to the outdoor wooden stage where each adventurer is given a cheesy certificate commemorating for posterity the feat of crossing the Artic Circle, marked by a line of white-washed rocks? Framed, that could replace the velvet picture of Elvis on the wall back in the double-wide.

The high point of the DVD was perhaps on the return to Stockholm after the paying riders had disembarked and the crew was filmed removing bags of trash from the Polar Express. That just about summed up the vicarious thrill for me.

3 out of 5 stars great visuals, bad sound.......2004-01-22

I was disappointed with the narrator. He sounds muffled when he speaks and is difficult to understand. This would have been a fantastic production otherwise. However, the images are great and still make it worthwhile.

4 out of 5 stars good visuals, but pretentious narration.......2001-07-23

This DVD is very good at giving the viewer a true sense of traveling on some of the finest trains in the world. Unlike some train travel vids, this one focuses as much on the train itself as it does on destination and sights en route. On lesser trains that might be tedious, but here it is very welcome. One drawback: everyone interviewed is falling over themselves to tell you how 'faaaabulous' the train is. By the third episode, I started mocking them in Monty Python voices. I checked the prices for these journeys on the internet and they are certainly pricey, so I can understand their desire to make them sound luxurious (which they are). But they lay it on way too thick. I found myself hitting the mute button whenever they paused to interview staff.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended for that Train Lover in You !.......2001-01-05

5 out of 5 stars World Class Trains Is Great.......2000-12-30

Since no one has attempted as of yet to review this disc I guess I will have to be the first. After receiving this DVD as a Christmas present I must say that this title is worth buying for those of you out there who are abet lovers of trains.

For this is a six part series all on on one DVD with each program lasting an hour long as you board some of the finest luxurious first class trains available today and to experience the kind of first class rail service not seen very often in today's high tech world. So you will find this DVD to be a real treat. It was for me atleast.

Each program on here is recorded with digital cameras to give a filmic feel of glorious color and picture postcard shots. It also include a guided look at scenery and locations en rout as it is being narrated and includes some interesting music of the reign as well as some natural train sounds from both the steam and diesel locomotives. Even though I have never experienced these rail excursions first hand as featured on this disc and I probably never will but have found this DVD to be a first class operation all the way from sound to video as this DVD is in Dolby Digital surround sound and will sound great when played through a 5.1 AV receiver and that you won't get board as you watch this disc as many of the programs show lots of great train footage from over head and outdoor shots to some nice indoor footage of the trains intearier. Except for the India rail excursion train ride which does not show much train footage as I expected but however the other five programs does show lots of train footage to keep the viewer interested and keeps pretty much on track. This was a Christmas present worth getting and I'm glad that I got a copy of it. All though the price may seem pretty high but worth considering due to the fact that it is six hours of programming. I highly recommend this this title to all rail fans.
