4 out of 5 stars beautyful pictures and a loveley story.......2007-05-14

It was wonderful to see this film again in this high quality in my own home theater. Its fascinating to see this penguins on a big screen. This film is definitely one of the HD DVDs that have to be in every good collection.
The look is partially a little grainy, because the film is shot in 16mm.
But i like this analog film look. Its a pity, that the original version is not alternative on the disc with subtitles. The voiceover of morgan freeman is good, no doubt. But in the original version (in the german synchronisation to) the penguins tells the story by themselfs like actors. This has definitive more flair. So good 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars March of Number 1 film........2007-05-14

This is a fantastic film, which really shows the life of a penguin. It is quite sad in places, but I think it would be sutable for young children.

5 out of 5 stars March Of The Penquins.......2007-05-07

SO much fun to watch! Belive it or not but this helped when i watched Happy Feet!

4 out of 5 stars 5 Stars film, 3 Stars Picture/Sound Quality.......2007-04-03

First things first; this is a great film! If you want to view my comments on it, check my DVD review from a couple years ago. I'm here to discuss the HD DVD. Frankly, if you already own the DVD, don't waste your money on the HD version. There is virtually no improvement in picture quality, at least from what I could decipher, over the DVD. Why? Because the film itself was shot with crappy, grainy, low resolution film to give it that "documentary" look. Seriously...you'll be as surprised as I was when you watch it to see that it looks virtually identical to the DVD version. I was really looking forward to high-def penguins; for great visuals of penguins, "Happy Feet" on HD DVD is the one to buy (correction: rent; it's an abominable film). For a great film, if you don't already own "March of the Penguins" on DVD, buy the HD DVD version. Just don't expect to be blown away. I haven't seen the Blu-Ray, but I would imagine that the PQ is exactly the same.

True to the IMAX tradition, Antarctica is replete with breathtaking aerial and underwater footage of the earth's highest, coldest, and driest continent. Most folks' TVs are 4,500 times smaller than an IMAX screen--too small to duplicate the acrophobic-stomach sensation that is the hallmark of the IMAX in-theater experience. All the same, like most IMAX movies, Antarctica has some of the best production values on film today. The story begins with a flock of penguins above--and below--water, and moves to gargantuan underwater ice sheets and then to a look at Antarctic climatic changes. Watch scientists locate and extract ancient ice to analyze preserved bubbles of ancient air, as well. Explorer Robert Scott makes an important contribution with his appealing voice and serene, well-articulated narrative. The DVD's special features include Spanish and French language tracks, subtitling, and Internet links if you use the disc on your computer. --Erik Macki

3 out of 5 stars Worthwhile to rent.......2005-11-17

My favorite moments in this film are the seals, the penguins, and the people swimming inside the water of the interior of a glacier. The penguins are really cute, and the seals are amazing, the way they let people come right up to them.

I don't know enough about Antarctica to comment as to whether it has been presented fairly in this film, and I've never seen another film on Antarctica to compare this one to.

2 out of 5 stars Very pretty but pretty dull.......2004-12-15

Look, I love all things about Antarctica, having visited there as a Coast Guard officer in 1982. I have stood at the South Pole, flew in a helicopter through the Dry Valleys, cavorted with penguins on the sea ice, visited the restored huts of Scott and Shackleton. And yet this DVD bored me. Granted, the cinematography is awesome (well, semi-awesome on a 21 inch screen), and I learned a bit about glaciers. But the reviewers who point to the film's choppiness are spot on. Moreover, the narration is at an annoyingly low volume compared to the rest of the soundtrack. Finally, the romantic elevation of Robert Scott into a great explorer is ahistoric, as Roland Huntsford showed long ago in his book Scott and Amundsen, so the fawning treatment here is inappropriate.

3 out of 5 stars Very Good but Missing Something.......2003-11-07

The strength of the program is in the underwater shots and the look deep inside the crevice. This is where the program shines and the Imax we all know is evident.

I was a little disappointed in the wild life shots, particularly because a Killer Whale is never shown (I don't think even mentioned) and which is a major component of that ecosystem. The shots of seals and penguins on the surface seemed a little distant and didn't have that usual Imax touch to it.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but there just seems to be something missing. I watched Imax's Everest title back to back with this one. The Everest one is so much tighter. I think because you get a better feel for the people you're watching on screen, whereas with the Antarctica program, there really isn't a tour guide. It's more disjointed and it plays very choppy. When it's good, it's very good, but there's some lapses there in between the underwater scenes where it just looks like they're at the local ski resort. I never felt like I was shown the expanse, danger, history, complete beauty of Antarctica.

It is still a wonderful program, although I think I would have been just as happy renting it. I don't think it will get dozens of plays like the Everest title will.

5 out of 5 stars Captures the wonder and majesty of Antarctica.......2001-09-17

This 1991 documentary was created for an IMAX presentation so I seriously wondered how this video would look on my little TV scene. Of course it could never be the same, but I had nothing to worry about because this 38-minute Australian documentary definitely captures the wonder and majesty of Antarctica. I learned something too and held my breathe in awe when the camera showed how the crevices in the glaciers are sometimes covered with such a thin sheet of ice that it will not sustain the weight of a person. However, they did bring a camera down there and it was a treat to see something that had never been filmed before. Another great shot was a timed exposure of the sun as it travels around the pole. There was also excellent cinematography of seals and of penguins although I wish they had skipped the silly background music, which tried to be humorous while showing the penguins diving. There were also a few film clips from the 1948 British film "Scott of Antarctica".

I understand that the film cost $3.5 million to produce and that the film crew had to drag 2300 pounds of Imax equipment around, including one camera that never worked in the frigid temperatures. It took two Antarctic summers to film and the crew stayed at the American, French, Russian and Chinese scientific camps, getting some interesting footage of the scientists themselves and their experiments. The inevitable conclusion is that global warming is a serious threat that we cannot ignore. This is a great video for those of us who will likely never visit this coldest, driest, windiest and last unexplored place on earth. Recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been a lot better..........2000-07-07

If Imax is now the best quality available on dvd and Anctartica one of the unexplored wonders of our world, you could expect a visual masterpiece. This isn't. Nevertheless, it's not terrible either. The problem here is the lack of empathy that this documentary brings. Yes, penguins look stunning and glaciers also do the trick, but if you're going to go to a place so hostile, yet so diverse, as Anctartica you should expect more information, more soul put into it and, of course, the magic that other documentaries such as Africa-The Serengeti, Imax-Alaska or The Living Seas display. Buy it only if you want to complete your Imax collection.

5 out of 5 stars Antarctica is a cold, cold place... But NOVA warms my brain!.......2006-12-21

NOVA delivers another fantastic show with this Antarctic expedition to one of the Seven Summits! Granted, I am already a big fan of NOVA, let alone when they cover my favorite topics (mountaineering!) Featuring Conrad Anker, Jon Krakauer, Dave Hahn, and assorted crew, they lug hundreds of pounds of gear up a new route on the east side of Vinson Massif, which, at a gain of over 12,000 feet (to a final altitude of 16,077 feet,) is no small task. This informative production examines some of the history of the exploration of the Antarctic continent, and addresses the future with scientific observations of ice equilibrium, as it pertains to global climate change. Jon Krakauer (already well known for his writing,) provides an interesting perspective and valuable knowledge of the climbing and expedition process. There is some spectacular footage of Antarctica in here. My only critique is that I would like some extras, maybe some cutting-room floor footage as an additional feature. I definitely recommend this DVD, along with NOVA's other mountaineering productions, such as "Everest: The Death Zone," and "Deadly Ascent," which examines the effects of altitude on climbers (on Denali.)

T&T's Real Travels was born from our overwhelming passion to see the world and to share real experiences with others. What sets us apart from the rest? We don't embellish our programs or set false expectations by showing just the glossy brochure version of what you might expect. Whether it's glorious or gloomy, we tell it to you the only way we know: the "real" way!

We're more comfortable than backpackers, yet more practical than jet-setters. We travel like you can. Join us on our adventures in real travel!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Poor Quality.......2006-11-08

I bought this DVD as a preview before my trip to Antarctica. The disc was defective so I returned it for a replacement. The new DVD they sent was also defective and I had to return it for a refund. With such poor quality discs, no matter how cheap it is, it is not worth the hassle. Avoid this poor quality product.

5 out of 5 stars Seeing Antarctica the Real Travels way.......2006-04-20

As one of the principals behind T&T's Real Travels, I want to share some thoughts about our productions and clarify what to expect when viewing one of our DVDs.

First and foremost, we truly are independent travel filmmakers. We're more like reality TV or Cin?ma V?rit? for travel. We offer a unique blend of travel storytelling and insightful tips. What we are not is a typical, slick, scripted television show. Most travel shows only focus on the ideal aspects of travel. They only look for the best possible filming conditions and don't show the experiences of an average tourist. We highlight parts of travel that other shows miss. Our DVDs aren't meant to replace other travel programs, but compliment them.

In Antarctica, we truly believe we give the viewer a strong sense of what it's like to experience a (approx.) 10-day cruise to Antarctica. It's the coldest, most remote region on the planet, and it's difficult to imagine what an average tourist might expect. We give you the Real deal: an exciting, tourist's-eye view of icebergs, tons of penguins, seals, birds, whales, the ship we sailed on - including an overview of how to ride in a Zodiac boat - and even interviews with the Expedition Staff. We address seasickness, and what it's like to sail across the Drake Passage, and we discuss how to be environmentally conscious in Antarctica. If you want to see the Coldest Place On Earth as a Real Traveler would, this is the DVD for you. Bon Voyage!

1 out of 5 stars Sell your home video here!.......2006-04-03

Very disappointing. This is not Ewan McGregor in Churchill or Lonely Planet on TV. Imagine, instead, the travel videos of the neighbor couple you find to be nice enough, but still try to avoid at the mailboxes. It's quite a smart idea--edit and sell your videos and you'll pay for your next trip. Too bad the sound is poor, the video often fuzzy, and our host couple spends their time making up "funny" dialog for the penguins rather then telling us anything about them. If only NY, NY's review had been posted before I'd ordered my copy!

1 out of 5 stars You'll be spending 15 bucks on a shaky, tilted amateur home video.......2006-04-01

I have very mixed and mostly negative impressions of this video. It appears to be one couple's attempt to finance their vacation. I'll strive, however, to offer an overview:

1) Amateur production values. See M. Rogers' review of T&T's Rio dvd and Jacque Jacque's review of their France dvd for similar comments. Shaky handling of camcorder. Mundane and repetitive transitions. Camera often tilted so that horizon is tilted in picture as well- an error so obvious and annoying that I'm not sure how it was overlooked during the filing. Mostly boring, layperson narrative, of the, "Hey, look, another penguin, come here, little guy!" variety. I was particularly underwhelmed by the several-minute introduction on the highway by Buenos Aires, i.e., highway shots. A number of uninteresting shots. Cheap synth music. Music and narrative almost continuous throughout the video- a drag, given that presumably one goes to the Antarctic region to experience a sense of solitude, and the conveyance of it is sorely undermined by constant discussion (remember any glorious half-day hike you've been on that was diminished by uninterrupted chatter for its duration). On an unrelated notes: my dvd was defective (lack of quality control?), and wouldn't open to every chapter, though I saw the 90% of the dvd, and am otherwise commenting here on the demerits of what I saw and heard.

2) Thomas and Trystan do seem like nice enough people, but not really whom/what I want to see front and center if I were to go to Antarctica- I hadn't really envisioned the trip as a backyard barbecue experience, a chance to schmooze with the neighbors. I'm also offended by the fact that for several of their dvd's, they post their own reviews on Amazon, thus boosting the star ratings for these videos, given the paucity of buyer feedback for each one. This is a truly tacky and potentially misleading serious of gestures that are entirely unprofessional and sum up my greatest disappointment with the dvd I bought- it's unprofessional, un-artful, and is not good enough to merit purchase, but only suitable for a file-sharing site posting.

3) Video does succeed at moments in conveying splendor of Antarctic region, and by its preponderance of mundane moments also suggest to me that such a trip would obviously not be Shackleton's adventure, but more like a Circle Line tour, thus cutting through the over-idealization one can create about an exotic tour. It therefore helped me to decide not to visit Antarctica unless some day I have money to burn, as much of the trip is simply spent on the bow of the ship, in a Zodiac raft, watching the other tourists soak in a hot pool or wandering up and down a volcanic shore, etc (albeit interspersed with moments of rapture). So, yes, the video does succeed as cinema verite, of the most mundane variety.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Example.......2005-11-30

After seeing March of the Penguins some time ago, I felt inspired to learn about how to actually visit Antarctica, mostly because of my new found fascination with penguins. But after doing the research with the leading companies that offer cruise packages, I came across this DVD. I must say after having seen it, and thinking back on what I've researched, it seems to be a perfect example of what a cruise to the peninsula area would be like, which, thankfully to my liking, seems to include quite a bit of encounters with penguins! I may or may not ever make it to Antarctica, but this documentary was fun either way and makes me want to try and get there some day all the more. Very enjoyable.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and sublime!.......2006-01-21

Hub Culture Retrospectives: Antarctica combines awe-inspiring views of the South Pole with a hypnotic musical score based on sounds from nature. The video is a series of single-frame shots flowing from one to the other. Each frame focuses on one profound element of the landscape thus highlighting it's extreme environment and profoundness. Adding to the visual experience are sounds of rainfall lightly falling, glaciers creaking and penguins pruning likely to make the viewer fall into a trance-like state. The experience is akin to a visual massage of the soul.

Stan Stalnaker has effectively captured the true essence of Antarctica while giving us a deeper understanding of our vast planet and perhaps of ourselves. I highly recommend this DVD to anyone looking for a unique visual experience to share with friends or simply to enjoy alone.

5 out of 5 stars Filmed On Location in Antarctica.......2005-12-11

I filmed this DVD over three weeks on the ice in Antarctica in January 2005. We used simple DVD cams and were out on the water and on the glaciers almost every day. The footage is unique because we were working with the Chilean military base (they hosted us) on the peninsula, which gave us the time to get outside and spend hours on end filming in time lapse and stationary formats.

The DVD was then edited by Forward Motion Theater in NY (they just opened video art at the MOMA recently) and the original soundtrack was created by a small team called Aerostatic which do really cutting edge stuff.

The result is Hub Culture's first retrospective - an extended visual landscape that is real video art. We launched at the Ice Bar in London and the DVD is currently showing at the Ice Hotel in Sweden.

Only 1,000 copies of the DVD were made, but we are working on new executions for Turkey and Brazil which will be out in 2006.

The key is to understand that you don't "watch" it like you would normal television - its designed to be background art that moves and shifts over time.

The middle sequence, which we call dot, is sooo cool. You'll have to see what it is though to understand.

You can watch a trailer for the DVD at [...], and if you buy it, please let us know what you think!

I bought this dvd on a wild hunch and was incredibly lucky. This underwater photoessay on the ice palace under Antartica is hauntingly beautiful and mesmerizing. Highlight shadows of night divers floating underneath the polar icecap are breathtaking. The radiant, solitary dances of seals, jellyfish and other wondrous life forms drift to the understated yet poignant music. Take the awe and delight of stark natural beauty, add slow motion photography, experienced diver/photographers, shake with a kaleidoscope of drifting ice crystals and you have a magical experience in store.

I obtained this dvd on a wild hunch. The entire dvd consists of panoramic photogrqpy above and below(mostly below) the Antartica ice cap. As an avid diver, nature and fusion music lover, I found the incredible underwater cinematography of ice palaces mesmerizing. My favorite scenes include divers casting highlight shadows on the ice walls during a night dive. The underwater dances by seals, crinoids and jellyfish reveal a solitary radiance matched by the understated music score. An eerie spirituality permeates the entire viewing experience. If you take the awe and splendor of fireworks displays and add a bit of slow motion photography, haunting music and reverence for the natural world, you might be lucky enough to come up with Spiritual Earth/Crystal Water. I hope there is a sequel soon.
