Editorial Review:
Description
A major critical film biography of Salvador Dali. This film presents Dali's entire oeuvre--painting, sculpture, writing, fashion and film--in the context of his extraordinary life and international career. It has been constructed through a combination of specially shot location footage, archival film, feature film material, rostrum filmings of Dali's paintings and interviews with his friends and colleagues. The narration of the film has been drawn from Dali's own writings. In "Dali," the great Spanish painter is finally captured in all his inimitable glory!

It can hardly be a coincidence that this "deluxe edition" of John Lennon - Imagine should be issued in late 2005, a couple of months after what would have been the former Beatle's 65th birthday and mere days before the 25th anniversary of his death. Whether that's cynical, poignant, or just good marketing is moot; what matters is that Lennon's impact, not just as a musician but as a public figure, remains largely undiminished. The film, released theatrically in 1988, will already be familiar to many fans. "Narrated" by Lennon himself and culled from hundreds of hours of footage, much of it home movies shot by John and Yoko Ono, Imagine is a substantial, reasonably illuminating portrait of the man, warts and all, from childhood through the Beatle years, his solo career, and his life with Yoko straight up to his fatal encounter with Mark David Chapman. It's the new bonus features that are the principal draw here; but whether or not they qualify as "deluxe" is arguable. The Lennons' radio interview with a BBC reporter is notable mostly for John's patience in the face of idiotic questions like "Is love very important to young people today?" The ten or so minutes spent with Lennon's school headmaster, William Ernest Pobjoy (love the name), yield little insight, especially considering that the two were at the school at the same time for just one year, half a century ago; likewise, a new "making of" documentary with Ono, writer-director Andrew Solt, producer David Wolper, and others isn't exactly ground-breaking. However, a previously unreleased performance of "Imagine," with Lennon and some unknown accompanists on acoustic guitar, is nice, as is some heretofore unseen footage of the Lennons at home on their Tittenhurst Estate. Add to that a fine transfer and Dolby digital sound, and you have another addition to the filmed legacy of the Beatles--a subject that, for many of us, will never be old news. --Sam Graham
Description
Imagine John Lennon comes from a treasure trove: the legendary musician's own collection of more than 240 hours of film and videotape, much of it never seen by the public. With cooperation from Yoko Ono in its creation, producers David L. Wolper and Andrew Solt (partners on This Is Elvis) transform the archival footage - and a monumental 36-tune soundtrack - into a spellbinding account of a complex, fascinating man. Lennon's own voice narrates "a classic film biography" (Roy Leonard, WGN-TV/Chicago).
DVD Features:
Additional Scenes:Never Before Seen Footage of the Island House (Lake House at home of John and Yoko, Tittenhurst Estate in Ascot, England)
Audio Commentary:John Lennon Trivia Track (subtitled, not audio)
DVD ROM Features:John Lennon Music Guide
Featurette:Tribute to John Lennon: The Man, The Music, The Memories (w/ the Filmmakers David L. Wolper, Andrew Solt, Sam Egan, Editors Bert Lovitt and Bud Friedgen)
Interviews:John & Yoko: Truth Be Told (BBC Radio Interview with John and Yoko) William Ernest Pobjoy Interview (Headmaster Quarry Bank High School - John Lennon's Grammar School)
Other:Acoustic IMAGINE - never before released performance at the Apollo Theatre in New York City, Dec. 17, 1971
Theatrical Trailer:James Dean Trailer

Imagine.......2007-07-06
The strength of "Imagine" lies in its clear-eyed depiction of its subject. Gifted and well-intentioned as he was, Lennon was no saint, and at times, misguided if not naïve. Example: John and Yoko taking to bed to protest the Vietnam War makes no more sense now than it did then. Conservative cartoonist Al Capp visits them and calls their action "self-aggrandizing" (don't miss this sequence). In truth, their motives were noble, but their tactics were too bizarre to resonate. Clearly Lennon was still assimilating an unprecedented super-stardom, and coping with the psychic scars of a mother who abandoned him, by letting Yoko infantilize and control him. As John himself wrote, "Whatever gets you through the night..." This revealing documentary is a must-see for any Beatles fan.
al capp's full of crap.......2007-06-30
One thing that stuck in my craw was the 'interview' with Al Capp. I always wonder, how can anyone criticise someone for seeking peace. What sick mind wants to parody an individual using his fame and fortune to try better the world? I usually believe such people have some serious and hidden ill-will towards mankind. With this in mind I did a few minutes Google search on Mr Capp and it didn't take long to find he was shortly after hounded out of his career by numerous allegations of sexual misconduct conducted at the time he was interviewing Lennon. A reprobate like that should not be given the time of day, let alone foul a film of one of the greatest artistic influences of the second half of the last century.
Posthumous rip-off.......2007-05-26
This 2-DVD edition could have easily fitted on 1 DVD. THe material is o.k. albeit a little self-congratulary with the director and producer of the DVD being interviewd on their own DVD. But it is little less than deceit to offer this as a 'double' DVD. Imagine John Lennon ripping you off.
Perfect.......2007-05-18
If anyone is a true Beatles/John Lennon fan, this is a must have. Music is terrific, film clips are amazing!
Imagine (Deluxe Edition) is Wonderful!!.......2007-01-22
I had been looking for this DVD because I had it on an old VHS tape and the sound and picture qualities were very poor. I love all the extras that are on this DVD! I can watch it over and over again and never get bored. I would definitely recommend this DVD to anyone!

Un Chien Andalou remains a startling artifact suggesting ways in which film can express the subconscious. The result of Luis Bunuel's collaboration with Salvador Dali, the 17-minute, 1929 film was designed expressly to shock and provoke. Opening with the canonical eyeball-slashing sequence and divided into baffling "chapters", this is a work of art obsessed with religion, lust, decay, violence, and death. Un Chien Andalou isn't simply one of the great works of the surrealist movement, but a segment of cinematic DNA that irrevocably altered the aesthetics of film. In its tangled corridors you find the seeds to the disappearing-mouth bit in The Matrix, the carcasses strewn through Peter Greenaway's A Zed and Two Noughts and pretty much the entire oeuvre of David Lynch. --Ryan Boudinot
Description
Filmed in Paris in 1929, UN CHIEN ANDALOU is regarded as the first film produced purely from within the Surrealist movement and is a landmark in the history of cinema. Loving treatment to DVD includes, as bonus material, an interview/documentary with Juan Luis Bunuel (Luis' son), commentary by Surrealism expert Stephen Barber, excerpts from Luis Bunuel's 1953 address "Mystery of Cinema", and beautiful illustrations by UK artist Dave Mckean. NTSC, region 0.

bad dvd burn for Un Chien Andalou.......2007-05-06
Un Chien Andalou is a work of Art, BUT the dvd that I got from Amazon was not a of a very good quality. I have seen the film in dvd format several times in the past and this dvd version has way too much contrast and digital glitches in two or three occassions.
Open Doors To The Irrational.......2007-04-04
While visiting in 2005 the Salvador Dali's exhibitions in Philadelphia Museum of Art, I was able to see two films that Dali was a big part of. In the video Gallery of the museum, two intriguing projects had been running together in the continuous loop, the early "Un Chien Andalou" (17 minutes) and the recently released, animated "Destino" (6 minutes). This was the first time I saw both films and I kept coming back to the gallery over and over again. They both are unforgettable.
The inspiration for "Un Chien Andalou" began with the dreams of two men, two artists, and two friends. Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali exchanged the dreams they both had, Bunuel - about a slender cloud slicing the moon in half "like a razor blade slicing through an eye", and Dali - about a dream involving a hand enveloped by ants. Both artists soon began working on a film script based on these ideas.
Made in 1929, the film has not aged at all. The film's disconnected but haunting scenes and images are as shocking today (at least, for me they were) as I am sure they were 75 years ago. The reason the film is so powerful today may be in the themes of love, sex, death, and decay that are eternal and will always attract the artists and audiences alike. It is also could be in the establishing and following by both artists the certain rules, "No idea or image that might lend itself to a rational explanation of any kind will be accepted...We had to open all doors to the irrational and keep only those images that surprised us without trying to explain why." Perhaps, Dali and Bunuel intended their film to be experienced directly and not analyzed by the viewers.
Un Chien Andalou.......2007-01-19
Very interesting movie, from a very interesting artist.
I bought this for my boyfriend (he is a huge Dali fan and collector) and he loved it. its a great addition to any home collection, if you are into surrealism or the abstract.
the movie isnt very long and jumps around with many interesting and disturbing images. its done in black and white and if i recall correctly, it was a silent film with a music soundtrack dubbed over it.
Overall i was pleased with this product, and the "extras" were fun. i would say you would have to be a fan of dali or art to appreciate it however, as it doesnt follow much of a "plot" and due to the abstract images (such as the ladys eye being cut by a razor and the dead mules on the piano).
What the...?.......2006-03-06
It is difficult to review such a strange film, but one needs a preface before seeing it. Un Chien Andalou is a surrealist film worked on by Salvador Dali. There is no real plot and the occurances in the film are impossible and hard to follow since none of them seem to be connected. There is an underlying message though, fear. Most of the events reflect the fears of many people from one's eye being cut with a straight razor, being shot, being raped, etc.
This film is experimental and strange, not the type of movie you would be able to laugh about with friends or use in a movie night on Friday, but it is certainly a curiosity and a great representative of surrealism.
Ten Years Later..........2005-10-26
WOW! Where do I start with this one? Here is an absolutely brilliantly realized film that doesn't even try to follow a coherent plot. It's the most insane film I've ever seen, and I loved every second of it. It's tough not to look past the images for what they are, though, because your mind tries to fill in the blanks and write its own story. Scenes will change their mood suddenly and without reason, creating an utterly shocking experience. I was surprised to see such sophisticated technique in such an unstructured film. Un Chien Andalou is a masterpiece of the absurd, and I strongly suggest anyone with a taste for the weird see it.

Ric Burns' Andy Warhol is a four-hour pop-culture extravaganza that will retool what you think you know about the famed and oft-parodied soup-can painter. Delving deep into Andy's impoverished upbringing in Pittsburgh, the greatest success of Burns' film is its ability to delve deep behind the façade of Andy Warhol, Pop Celebrity. Featuring interviews with an array of confidants from art dealers to artists (but, alas, no Lou Reed), Burns' film portrays an extremely insecure man who lived with his mother through much of the Factory years and constantly seeked a measure of fame akin to the Hollywood starlets whose photographs he tore out of the pages of Depression-era movie mags. Andy Warhol succeeded in achieving that fame, and along the way redefined how we think of art and culture. This film may very well redefine what you think of the man. -- Kristian St. Clair
Description
"He was the most American of artists and the most artistic of Americans," one man later said - "so American in fact that he is almost invisible to us." ANDY WARHOL - a riveting and often deeply moving film portrait of the most famous and famously controversial artist of the second half of the twentieth century - is the first to explore the complete spectrum of Warhol's astonishing artistic output, stretching across five decades from the late 1940's to his untimely death in 1987. Combining powerful on-camera interviews and rare still and motion picture footage, it is also the first to put Warhol himself - his humble family background and formative experiences in Pittsburgh, and his crucial apprenticeship as a commercial artist in New York - back into the presentation of his life.
Customer Reviews:
Fairly Informative but Needlessly Dreary in Tone.......2006-12-19
I'm pleased to know that others find more value in this documentary than I did. As someone who has been fascinated by Warhol's work and life since childhood, I've always felt that a fair and comprehensive overview of the man's life was lacking, despite several biographies and some documentaries prior to this one. It seems that each biographer or documentarian has some (usually negatively judgemental) bias or point of view that they want to paint Warhol with ... somewhat understandable as the man refused to characterize himself directly. In my opinion, the value of Mr. Burns' documentary is the wonderful archival footage included, Ms. Anderson's fine narration, and some of the anecdotes of those interviewed (most revealingly, Irving Blum's recollections, and most charmingly, Billy Name's surprisingly coherent memories.) However, the tone of the documentary is quite dismal. You end up feeling like Warhol's was a tragic life, when I feel that a fair assessment wouldn't arrive at that characterization. Where is the joy? Why is the musical soundtrack so awful and in some cases inappropriate? Where are the other surviving acquaintances (e.g. Dallesandro?) Must Warhol always be blamed for the excesses of his followers? Must all charismatic people be held responsible for their groupies' lack of self control? I don't think so, but many persons besides Mr. Burns appear to hold Warhol accountable for the drug abuse and deaths of some of his 60s hangers-on. I'm not sorry I bought this DVD. I just wish it had been more well-balanced, and above all, wish that the art had been explored in depth more. Some of Warhol's major phases are mentioned, described, but with the exception of early works, are not really explored with an eye to their significance in the art world and culture at large. Others are completely missing from the documentary. In any event, it's worth seeing if you're interested. Just don't take this to be the be-all and end-all bible of all things Warhol. Perhaps it's still just too soon for a proper assessment, but I'm STILL left feeling that the self-appointed stewards of Warhol's "meaning" just don't get it, at least not comprehensively enough.
Andy Warhol - A Documentary Film........2006-12-03
I just received this in the mail and finally got to watch it. It is a very engaging and in-depth presentation of his life from early childhood to the late 60s. In fact it's the most in-depth documentary in the respects of his early life, pre-pop success, that I've seen. There are lots of great images and archival footage that otherwise you may not have a chance to see, but...
This documentary seems to focus mostly on the silver factory years, which lasted only from the early 60s to 1968, yet takes up most of the 4 hours of this film. Granted, those were arguably some of the most influential and important years of his career, but I wish this film contained more on his later life. The last 2 decades of his career, the 70s and 80s, took up only the last 20 minutes (credits included) of the whole 4 hours, which is only a brief summary. This is the only reason I decked one star off my rating, as the 70s and 80s are my personal favorite times in his career. There's always The Andy Warhol Diaries for that area though, which I would also recommend.
So, overall, I would recommend this to anyone interested in Andy, and to those who are already fans and admirers. Even though it's lacking in it's coverage of his late life and career, it excels in every other aspect, and I'm glad I got to see it.
Outstanding portrait of Warhol, 1960s, and art.......2006-10-11
This is the best portrait of an artist I've ever seen. I was completely entralled by the film. Because Warhol was both tremendously inventive and horribly cruel, I alternately felt a sense of awe and disgust. Warhol's genius and callousness are both fleshed out. Despite the turbulent content of the film, I was simply exhilerated throughout.
Having watched this excellent film, I feel a greatly enriched appreciation for Warhol's art---a sense of what it said, how it worked, and how it became a cliche. (I was particularly ill-informed about Warhol's films, which were discussed in great detail.)
The Factory--where Warhol worked (but seldom played) and where transvestites, drifters, and creative spirits intermingled--is featured in healthy portions. This locale comes across as one of those rare places in history where the geist of a era is spatially concentrated. Here, in this one extraordinary place of production, Warhol and others fomented art and a vision of a post-Fordist world. This film is essential viewing (like the Weather Underground or Berkeley in the Sixties) for those who want to ingest and comprehend the paradigm shift of the "1960s."
Warhol's cruel indifference to the self-destruction of those around him is critically revealed. While some in the Factory drank and drugged themselves to death, Warhol passively watches, always remaining cool, detached, and voyeuristic.
The attempted homicide on Warhol, his commercialism, and his later years are all mentioned. I would fault the film for not showing Warhol speak on film more often, for not really considering his cooptation by capitalism, and for skipping over his influence in art and in popular society.
I must admit though, that the film is brilliantly executed, and well worth your time and nickel.

A treasure.......2007-04-27
I liked this DVD a lot. I am not a Buddhist, but am interested in psychological/philosophical/spiritual questions. I am also interested in learning more about meditation and all the health benefits associated with it. This DVD spans a wide range of topics over 4 hours of talks with the Dalai Lama touching on a number of issues central to finding personal and collective happiness. What I liked most is seeing the personality of one of the greatest thinkers of our time and how gentle and thoughtful he is. Highly recommended.

Without A Doubt One of the Best.......2007-02-10
Biography's and Documentaion of Andy Warhol. Please let there be More of the "Cheesy" PBS atmosphere in the film, as one reviewer remarked..And too i could Not either Remove myself from the couch while watching this Work of Art.. You know its going to be Good when you have Great interviews, especially art collector Dennis Hopper, and friend of Andy. This dvd is An amazing project done to Perfection..That im Sure, Andy would have Approved of. Its Something one could not fully grasp with just one viewing. Jam packed of things i Never knew existed. BUY THIS ONE for Sure.
Interesting and inspiring!.......2006-01-01
I bought this after reading a biography on Andy Warhol,
I found it very interesting to see the people I just read
about in video and fill in some details that the book might
not have covered, this is a really entertaining film, full of
footage of Andy at the Factory, making films and being
"Andy Warhol" It also turned me on to the Dandy Warhols
music for which I am very grateful!
There is alot of good footage of Andys art and his home and
posessions and even interviews with family members and a
look at the early life of a struggling immagrant family
and the gifted artist they raised who changed the world of art
and influenced the way products and personality's are marketed!
Recommended!
questions answered, now I see.......2004-12-04
what can I say I was clued to the film start to finish.
so many questions I had , so many answers I got, this was
truely an amazing man, never to be forgotten.
Informative but Generally Goofy.......2003-12-06
Although the film is really informative and offers a great anectdote about Warhol's supposed asexuality, the film has a cheesy PBS documentary feel to it. It's high art approach to Warhol's life and art seem opposed to his own intentions in his work. There's still some amazingly funny moments, all unintentional.
Finally a new DVD on Warhol.......2003-05-09
I was excited to see a new DVD was to be released about Andy Warhol a month ago. I bought this right away when it was finally released only to find out it is a documentary that was created in Canada that was broadcast on US television about 8 months ago. I had taped this when it aired so I was a bit disappointed to learn they are one in the same although it's nice to have it on DVD instead of tape. This is a great DVD and covers some new angles and material not found in 'Portrait of an Artist' or 'Superstar'. It's interesting to see some new interviews with members of the Warhola family. To see how they have aged since 'Portrait of an Artist' just proves it's about time something new was released. I highly recommend this DVD if you did not already watch it on television or if you are an avid fan of Andy like myself. Well worth the price of admission alone:-) Enjoy!

Dali.......2005-08-15
Audio is not good enough and somehow it is a little bit to dark.
Fun & Informative.......2004-08-12
This documentary should equally satisfy those already familiar with Dali and those who know nothing about him. I can't imagine anyone not being entertained by this display of Dali's unique personality. Passionate admires of Dali may find it difficult to view the footage of the Divine Dali not looking so divine in the 80's. A huge plus is the sub-titles even when Dali is speaking in English. Some important people are interviewed such as Man Ray, Max Ernst and Albert Field (author of the must have Official Catalog of the Graphic Works of Salvador Dali) among others. I saw this documentary two nights in a row and enjoyed it just as much the second time around.
Historic.......2002-12-04
Good historic review. A lot of information about Dalí
Brilliant.......2002-08-03
My friend Deanali(now following in the footsteps of the great Dali)got me influenced in Dali. After watching this video I am so impressed and there are very few artists alive today that are able to match the late Salvador Dali. This is a must see for all. Thank you, Mary
Great documentary.......2002-03-26
I'm not sure why the the DVD says black and white (a black and white documentary about an artist makes as much sense as a documentary about Beethoven with no sound). Although the DVD offers nothing extra (other than better video quality) from the VHS, overall its an exceptionally interesting look into the madman who wasn't mad. Highly Recommended for anyone who has ever wondered what makes watches melt.

DVD Quality Should Have Been Better.......2006-08-10
Born in Spain in 1904, Salvador Dali was one of the 20th centuries most controversial and celebrated artists. He is best known for his involvement in the surrealist movement due to such painting as The Persistance of Memory, although the leaders of the movement later denounced Dali as overly commercial. After the 1940s, he painted in a more classical style, filling his art with religious and scientific imagery. Famous for his outrageous personality, Dali was not limited to one media; he worked in oils, watercolors, drawings, graphics, sculptures, and jewelry. He produced films, illustrated and wrote many books, and created theatrical sets and costumes. Dali was practically a one-man artistic movement. His unique and mystifying genius brought him international fame and popularity and he is the only artist in history to have two separate museums dedicated exclusively to his works erected during his lifetime: The Salvador Dali Museum in Florida and Theatre Museo Dali in Spain. Accompanied by spectacular images of his greatest work.
A rather bland look at selected works of the artist.......2005-08-01
First off, let me say that I know next to nothing about art. I would like to cultivate an appreciation for great artwork, but it certainly does not come naturally - especially when it comes to modern art. Dali, however, is a master I at least have some affinity with. Who doesn't know of the melting clocks? I have also seen the dream sequence he created for Hitchcock's film Spellbound in 1945. Plus, the guy was just plain weird, and that is something I know a little bit about myself.
This Artists of the 20th Century DVD looks solely at Dali's artwork. All you see throughout the 50 minutes of video is one piece after another. There is no biographical look at the man, no mention of his contributions to the world beyond his paintings, and certainly no commentary on his eccentric personality (or mustache). There is not even an adequate identification of Gala, his inspiration and muse, despite numerous references to her in his paintings. Thus, this DVD will not introduce you to Dali the man or Dali the artist - it only looks at selected pieces of the art work of the maestro.
Dali's artwork is obviously impressive, and I was surprised by the variety of his work and styles. The narrator offers insight into some paintings - others, you just look and advance. I don't understand a lot of Dali's work, nor can I see some of the things the narrator tells me are in his more abstract pieces. The melting clocks and other surrealist images appeal to me. Dark works such as Visage of War speak volumes to the human observer, and the disappearing bust of Voltaire paintings are also striking. I was most impressed by the small sample of classical pieces Dali painted, however - largely because I did not know he ever produced such works. My idea of a painting equates with something like Design for the Interior Decoration of a Stable-Library, which is a strikingly beautiful work.
Is this DVD worth watching? I will have to say No. If you're a know-nothing novice like me, there is not enough basic information provided to really illuminate the artwork you will be shown. If you're knowledgeable about Dali, you'll be disappointed by the limited nature of the production and by the exquisite Dali works excluded from the show. After watching this, I decided to peruse some Dali galleries online, and I must say that the Internet makes this DVD of little value. Not only are the analyses and critical comments you will find online far superior to the information provided in this video, the quality of the paintings themselves are far better online than they are on the DVD.
Bad enough to make Dali's Mustache curl!.......2005-03-29
This has to be the worst artist DVD/VHS I've ever seen, whereas the Franz Kline vhs was choppy, short and lacking in detail this one is nothing more than grainy pictures of Dali's work shown against a plain background while a dull voice over tells you about each piece and it goes on like this through the WHOLE DVD! It almost looks like an high school video project for a final exam. There is no footage of the artist at work or his hometown or any other pictures or information just the repitition of each painting being shown and talked about briefly. SAVE YOUR MONEY even die hard Dali fans will be disapointed, this could be used as a teaching tool to novice painters and that is its only redeeming feature!

Customer Reviews:
YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MUCH GOOD COMMON SENSE.......2006-10-22
This was a very pleasant and grounding way to spend an hour and some odd minutes. The Dalai Lama sat down with a few different "panels" of guests talking about the state of the world. Guests included a few of my personal favorites including Dr. Helen Caldicott, Susan Sarandon and Dennis Kucinich. They discussed many aspects of what I see as one central problem in our world today. Lack of consciousness and people not recognizing their own power to inact positive change. The program has a lovely and powerful energy to it and even though nothing was said that I didn't already know, it provided a very healthy, grounding, reminder to me of what I already know. Which is so important when even the best of us can get knocked off balance by the stresses of day to day life. We need to stay in touch with what we already know to be true or what good can we be in the world. The Dalai Lama can, also, be quite funny. There was one point in the program where I, and the rest of the audience, laughed out loud. A very worth while program.

campy horror comedy--never tries to be serious.......2006-08-19
This hysterical slasher makes you laugh out loud, and dedicated horror fans will even enjoy picking out some of the camera setups that are mimicking murder scenes from other films. Priscilla Barnes alone is reason to see this film--better comedy than anything she ever did on Three's Company. And teaming her with Charles Fleischer as a gay rock video director was brilliant. They steal the show. And shockingly, the murders seem really routine and standard throughout the film, but all of a sudden, at the end, we get a couple of harsh hardcore killings! To add to the fun, the guys and girls all play it up as ditsy pretty people just waiting to become victims...this one is great for party viewing.
Good Corny Fun!.......2005-02-05
This Movie is one of the best straight-to-video horror movies I have ever seen! I especially loved the part of having Priscialla Barnes in it! She was great in this film! The ending wasn't that shocking was sort of. The idea of this film was great! Most of the acting sucked but it was still an enjoyable film! Funny and Scary At Times! A Highly Enjoyable Film if you don't take it too seriously!
Wow.......2004-09-14
Imagine Corey Haim being one of the biggest stars at one time and now he ends up playing a 10 scene/10 line character in this crappy movie. No wonder he is hitting the spike!
Anyways, the movie is bad. I am not sure if it is the bad acting or the bad plot. There are a few good scenes that made me want to watch the movie further.
It is very predictable. Very annoying. Very bad.
Priscilla Barnes (Terry from Threes Company) plays on it, that was almsot worth watching the movie...
See it anyways if you want to wate some time. Perhaps you will enjoy it.
A Horror/Comedy that actually works!.......2004-05-07
In spite of its generic title, "The Backlot Murders" turns out to be a pleasant surprise. It's an often hilarious film that pokes fun at traditional slasher films while serving up some chills on its own.
Through some fortunate circumstances a down on its luck rock band(featuring former teen heartthrob Corey Haim as the guitarist) gets to film its first video on the Universal Studios back lot. The video's director is played by the scene stealing Charles Fleischer, who is so hilarious in this role it's a wonder he doesn't get more work. Some of his lines(particularly in his scenes with Priscilla Barnes, as the band's manager) had me laughing out loud.
Soon, the band and the video crew start getting bumped off by a masked killer. Is it the band's former bass player, who was unceremoniously dumped shortly before they landed their big break? Maybe... I'm not telling.
"The Backlot Murders" is a welcome change of pace over other slasher films with a similar premise that take themselves too seriously. If you're looking for a slice 'n dice bloodbath, look elsewhere. If you're looking for an entertaining horror/comedy, then look no further. "The Backlot Murders" delivers.
BARNES IS NOBLE.......2004-02-02
Okay, this movie is really, really bad....most of the acting is unbelievably horrid; the script is derivative and ludicrous (they even steal a murder right out of the original Friday the 13th), and the writer obviously thinks the F word needs to be in every other sentence; the girls are breasty to say the least, but bimbos one and all. Even Corey Haim, virtually unrecognizable, is wasted. In spite of some pretty funny references to slasher movies and such, this movie is far down on the horror food chain. Except for..and here's what's funny...Priscilla Barnes as the bitchy band manager (looking nothing like the model she once was) is outstandingly hammy and cool; she obviously was having a good time. And Charles Fleischer as the flaming video director delivers many unbelievable lines with a strength and beauty only a true professional could muster.
But, folks, rent it...don't buy it like I Did!!!!!

A reality series in the loosest sense of the genre, Jamie Kennedy's Blowin' Up delves into the world of hip-hop by way of comedy. It's not a bad effort either. The MTV series is equal parts ad-libbed and scripted, but the actors on the show are so good that you'd swear they were just a couple of clueless knuckleheads trying to become rap stars. Kennedy (Scream, Three Kings, Son of the Mask) is no novice when it comes to comedy, having hosted and performed in The Jamie Kennedy Experiment--which was a cross between Punk'd and Candid Camera. Here, viewers follow Kennedy and his sidekick Stu Stone as they try to land a recording contract, deal with a demanding Bob Saget, and hobnob with real rap stars such as Paul Wall, Snoop Dogg, and Ice-T. This isn't the first time Kennedy has tackled music. In 2003's Malibu's Most Wanted, he resurrected one of his popular characters, B-Rad Gluckman, a rich Malibu kid who wants to make it in the rap world. Here, his role is funnier because he's playing a less capable version of himself. Just seven episodes long, the set includes quite a few fun special features, the best of which may be the surprisingly good "Rollin' with Saget" music video. If this were a real reality series, with Kennedy actually trying to become a rapper, it would be an uncomfortably embarrassing addition to his resume. But as a comedic piece of work, Blowin' Up gets the job done. --Jae-Ha Kim
Description
BLOWIN' UP is a "comedic reality" series for the MTV Network, following actor Jamie Kennedy (The Jamie Kennedy Experiment, Malibu's Most Wanted) as he attempts to achieve his lifelong dream of becoming a rapper. As Kennedy tries to launch his rap career, against the wishes of his agents, managers and parents, he is joined by sidekick Stu Stone. Together, the pair struggle for respect, resent each other, totally ignore common sense, and find out that while rappers have no problem breaking into acting, it isn't so simple the other way around. BLOWIN' UP is driven by the duo's original music, which they write, record, perform, and hope to release as a quadruple triple platinum album.
Customer Reviews:
freaking hilarious!.......2006-11-29
i loved the show when it was on and love it now that its on dvd. I had family and friends from europe ask me about it.. Jaime is funny and Stu is too!
"Blowin' Up" Don't Blow.......2006-11-17
Jamie Kennedy's success in stand-up comedy, TV and movies will have viewers wondering how real the hip-hop career of white-bread Kennedy and Jewish sidekick Stu Stone is in the reality TV show "Blowin' Up." Especially since Kennedy lovingly spoofed a white rapper in Malibu's Most Wanted. After watching an episode or two of the seven-epi season on this set, viewers will learn the music is legitimate, the duo's ambition is strong, and the show is partly fiction and partly fact. The fact that "Blowin' Up" isn't 100% real is a gift to viewers. It's better that the stars be in on the joke, too, when it comes to reality TV.
Kennedy and Stone run from East Coast to West Coast to South Coast (Florida) to get advice from rappers, producers, stars and agents, while simultaneously trying to get a record deal. Kennedy plays his perhaps real-life unassertive persona against his aggressive, beat-making, mooching partner Stone, whom Kennedy calls a Chihuahua in one scene because of his tendency to yap without end. Many of their trials and tribulations are clearly staged, as are most of the cameo conflicts.
Fans of Kennedy will adore this, as it highlights Kennedy's natural, laid-back charm in the face of rapping greatness and his hilarious annoyance at getting a contract, getting credibility, and getting his sidekick out of his face once in a while.
Of course, the show is a bit of a commercial for Kennedy and Stone's album. At their best, they rap furiously and hilariously on the level of The Bloodhound Gang on top of beats that even impress rap legends Rza, Ice T and Method Man during the show. I liked the goofy tunes so much, I bought a copy here.
DVD Extras: Serious fans get commentary from the producer, Kennedy and Stone on all seven episodes. The Internet hit music video for "Rollin' With Saget" is here. Weakest are the DVD extras that were originally marketing material: a prequel, podcasts and a CD commercial. Proving lots of funny was left on the cutting-room floor, the many deleted and extended scenes in various guises on the discs are worth a laugh or two.
