This well-acted drama won the Audience award at the 1996 Sundance Film Festival, causing a festival ruckus when several distributors entered a bidding war in response to the movie's positive buzz. When the movie was finally released, audience and critical response provided a sudden reality check: the movie's good to a point, but hardly worth the fuss it received at Sundance. Packing a miniseries' worth of melodrama into 117 minutes, the story centers on a young woman named Percy (Alison Elliott) who served prison time for manslaughter and arrives in a small town in Maine with hopes of beginning a new life. She works as a waitress in the Spitfire Grill, owned by Hannah (Ellen Burstyn), whose gruff exterior conceals a kind heart and precious little tolerance for the grill's regular customers, who cast their suspicions on Percy's mysterious past. The plot unfolds when Hannah holds a $100-per-entry essay contest to find a new owner for the grill. There's ample mystery surrounding the collected money, a local hermit who's really Hannah's shell-shocked Vietnam veteran son, and circumstances that lead the locals to adopt a lynch-mob mentality at Percy's expense. By the time Percy is nearly drowning in a raging river, The Spitfire Grill has taken its melodrama a few steps 'round the bend. Fine acting is the movie's saving grace, however, and newcomer Alison Elliott anchors The Spitfire Grill with a subtle, emotionally involving performance. Thanks to Elliott and Burstyn, you don't have to feel too guilty if you find yourself reaching for a Kleenex as the closing credits roll. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars A Balm in Gilead.......2007-03-09

A wonderful story of reconciliation and redemption through poignant sacrifice. Have the handkerchief close by.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2006-08-23

This is what I would refer to as a sleeper film. It grabs your interest from the very beginning and keeps it throughout the entire film. Good acting and great storyline.

5 out of 5 stars Better than expected!.......2006-07-31

This is a meaningful movie. It brings out the emotions, makes one think about relationships and judgement. Worth watching with a tissue!

5 out of 5 stars A quiet, satisfying movie.......2006-07-17

The Spitfire Grill is a very well written and acted tear-jerker. A young girl, just released from prison, decides to settle down in the quiet New England village of Gillead. The residents initially are downright unfriendly to her, and their transformation is predictable, but achieved in an unpredictable and pleasing way. The Spitfire Grill is like that: certain outcomes are required in this kind of movie, but the way the story gets to them is surprising and satisfying.

A great cast of characters (and actors) surround Alison Elliott as the young ex-con Percy. But Elliott is the key: she is very, very good in this movie, and her character is one you'll remember for quite a while.

I don't in general care for tear-jerker movies like the Spitfire Grill, but the tragedies and joys presented here are believable and not overdone. I enjoyed the immersion in Gillead and its people, and was both saddened and uplifted (without being manipulated) by this fine movie. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Spitfire Grill.......2006-06-09

The best movie I have seen - why because it touches
the heart and soul. It is rare to see a story like
this but when it does happen - it is a gift from
above. I bought the script, to try and find out
how the writer did this. All of the acters; photography;
"words not said" were gold, pure gold. You will be
moved. I still feel like I am part of this family
of people in the film. Priceless film making and
a standard of quality. Thank you to all who put it
together.

5 out of 5 stars One of these movies is no longer missing from my collection..........2006-12-06

I bought this for One of Our Aircraft Is Missing. I had recorded this movie on VHS several years ago by chance, and it has become one of my favorite war movies, and I have long wished I could get it on DVD in the hopes of getting a better quality recording.

For "Missing", the story centers around a British bomber crew who must bail out over occupied Netherlands and try to make their way back to Britain, with the help of various citizens and underground along the way. I tend to like documentaries, and while this is drama, much of the footage and audio of bomber aircraft is authentic, as the movie was filmed in 1941. This is not your typical war movie, though, somewhat also like a thriller. It draws you in, and is cleverly written, making you wonder what will happen next. The special effects for the time are very respectable. I wish modern movies could incorporate some of the unusual story-telling production values used. The transfer of the film is excellent, and has been remastered for multi-channel Dolby, and while there's only so much you can do with a period film's audio tracks, I was amazed how good it sounded over my surround-sound. I can understand what the crew members are saying when they speak with oxygen masks attached to their faces, something the audio from my old VHS tape copy didn't allow. The video quality is very good too. This is not high-definition, but pictures are sharp. There are some minor film artifacts from the original film, but it wouldn't be noticeable to most. If you've never seen this movie and don't even care about the other two, buy the DVD just for this one movie. Movie rating: ***** Quality rating: ****

(five stars is best possible using my ratings above. I rate the whole DVD 5 stars just because of this one movie...my lower ratings on the other two movies shouldn't detract from this one movie which more than justified the purchase of the DVD on it's own, so geting two other movies are more like a bonus to me)

"Spitfire" tells the story of the lead designer of the venerable British fighter aircraft of the same name. It's an interesting story, but war and history buffs are the main two audiences who'd want to watch this. Video transfer is only average, likely limited by the original film and perhaps not surprising for an unrestored 60 year old film...somewhat blurry, with muddy audio. Again, the history and occasional piece of footage from the time acts as a time tunnel, so if you're interested in the subject matter, it may be worth seeing at least once, but if you really want to know about the roots of the Supermarine Spitfire and can dispense with a bunch of make-believe drama, read a good history book on the subject. Although I don't mind owning it, you can lead a happy life without ever seeing this movie. This is no "Dambusters", which is a terrific example of another real-life plotline where a scientist/designer must overcome red-tape to develop and overcome hurdles on a significant invention. I'm rating this movie with the presumption you found yourself to this review because you like war movies. If you like musicals or Bogart or Pulp Fiction, this kind of movie is definitely not going to interest you. If you liked Aviator, then it may interest you. Movie Rating: **1/2 Quality Rating: **1/2

"We Dive At Dawn" is a good war movie, but not a great war movie. It tells the story of a submarine crew trying to sink the German battleship Brandenburg, but involves other story telling regarding their families, and some of the trial and tribulations of being at sea. It has a somewhat lighter tone to it than some other war movies, but is quite interesting in parts. Again, much of its value to me is seeing some authentic submarine operation from a movie filmed during the time in question. I'm not sure if any of the actual story is based on fact, but much of the movie's drama is not convincing to a modern day viewer, although I personally don't mind this as it was typical of how movies were made at this time, and it helps one to see what it was like to be living through WWII. If you've already seen most of the A-list war movies of the 1950's-1970's and are looking for lesser known war movies as I was, this is worth seeing. The video quality is very good, with sharp pictures and good contrast. Audio is very good too, though not quite as good as "Missing". Movie Rating: *** Quality Rating: ***1/2

For all three movies, note they are in black and white, and there are no track marks or scene selections. I didn't really care about this last point, but sometimes you want to review a scene. To do so, you can only use your DVD player's fast forward/reverse keys, not track increment/decrement. Also, there is a special feature called "Mr Blabbermouth" which is a curious movie reel showing interesting facts about the Axis' and Allies respective resources, and the defeatist thinking that some people had after Pearl Harbor.

3 out of 5 stars World War II propaganda films.......2006-03-19

It was fascinating seeing the first of these - "One of our Aircraftt is Missing", in the company of a sixteen year old grandson, who definitely found it a bit boring in parts, and I was verry struck by the exemplary behaviour of the participants - ideal not real - As an essay in nostalgia, very well made, I enjoyed it, as did my son, who is a film maker anyway; he was interested in techniques and conditioned,as a child, to such films. Spitfire, I knew better as "The First of the Few" - a far more sensible title, anyway, and it has the same well-made interest and a real story, sentimentally told. "We dive at Dawn" is well acted and has the same archival interest, while appealing to older viewers or film buffs. Quite moving.

3 out of 5 stars Should have been better.......2006-12-01

The main problem with this DVD is that the audio & video aren't always in synch. It was a long show but I think they played too much old stuff. If you're not familiar with the newer stuff, I urge you to check it out. The extras are good but you only need to see them once. Like most concert DVD's, it's average.

5 out of 5 stars Best Metal Concert DVD.......2006-07-30

I really didn't know what to expect when I puchased this DVD . I just wanted to see OverKill live and man did I get that and then some. They play for 2 hrs straight on one disc and do interviews etc on the other. If you are an OverKill fan or just a fan of Metal you will like this DVD. It's the best Metal DVD I own.

5 out of 5 stars RAW - RAW - RAW! What a Neck Wrecker!.......2006-03-25

This is Over Kill exactly how they should be...raw! It is a "no frills" performance so don't expect any artistic camera angles or special effects.

The show is fast and furious! The music is executed very well. I am 39 years old and have two kids. I could not help banging my head and raising my fist like I would have in 1989!

If you have ever seen the classic "Hello From The Gutter" video,
I think they are using the exact same stage set up. The camera work is pretty bad...but that is what makes this DVD so good.
It captures Overkill at its best.

BUY IT AND BANG YOUR HEAD!

They are powerful as always.... sound and video quality is really good. And they are not just old timer who want to appeal to people, want to live in 80's as me. They are still great and the best. Wow, during their live I am still living in 80's.. What a happy time

    2 out of 5 stars Informative docu/drama.......2006-05-09

I had seen snippets of this film in other DVDs and the picture quality was very good. Being a Spitfire fan I had to have a copy of the full length feature film with the bonus materials.

When the DVD arrived, I found that it was sourced from Rareaviation.com. The picture quality was very poor to say the least. It looks like someone had a poor quality VHS copy and had transferred it to DVD. I understand that it is an old film but I have many other films of similar vintage and I feel sure to say that there would be better copies of the film to be had. The only way to view the bonus materials was in my laptop as they are in Pdf format.

The DVD came in a transparent plastic CD case and not a regular DVD case with a good quality colour slick. I was very disappointed allround.

Would not recommend to anyone. I am considering buying a copy from Amazon.Co.UK who has a different supplier. Hope this review assists anyone considering buying a copy.

5 out of 5 stars Bonanza Volume 8.......2004-05-09

I'm a fan of Bonanza and I like horses, cowboys, cattle, etc.

This is a great TV show but, a little bad transfer on this DVD and this DVD is not terrible except, they removed the original theme music and the video is washed out. I don't care about it.

There are three episodes on one disc:

    1. The Spitfire
    2. The Stranger
    3. The Mission

My two favorite episodes on Volume 8 are "The Stranger" and "The Mission."

    In this episode "The Spitfire":

Joe must be forced to shoot and kill trespasser Jeb Hoad (Don C. Harvey) when he catches him setting fire to some timber and unsuccessfully orders him to stop. Jeb's daughter Willow (Anita Sands) tells Joe the Hoads will kill the Cartwrights. Grandma Hoad (Katherine Warren) and her boys come to the Ponderosa. Thier first target is Adam, who they shoot in the leg.

Guest Stars: Katherine Warren, Jack Elam

    Written by: Ward Hawkins

    Directed by: William Dario Faralla

Speaking of Ward Hawkins, "The Spitfire" was first telecast on January 14th, 1961, and this episode was written by Ward Hawkins.

    In this episode "The Stranger":

New Orleans Police Inspector Charles Leduque (Lloyd Nolan) tries to spoil Ben's bid for the Nevada governorship. Twenty years earlier, Ben killed Simon LaRoche in self-defense and fled. Inspector Leduque was accidentally crippled by his own gun while trying to arrest Ben. He threatens to disclose the reaseon Ben defended himself against Simon LaRoche - LaRoche had blackmailed Joe's mother Marie who feared her past would tarnish her husband. Ben agrees to drop the campaign and surrender, unaware that charges were dropped years earlier.

    Guest Star: Lloyd Nolan

Written by: Leonard Heideman, Oliver Crawford

    Directed by: Christian Nyby

Also appearing in this episode "The Stranger" are Joan Staley as Dixie, Robert Foulk as the sheriff, and Hal Baylor as Tom Cole, and originally broadcast on February 27, 1960, "The Stranger" was written by Leonard Heideman and Oliver Crawford.

    In this episode "The Mission":

Drunkard Charlie Trent (Henry Hull) feels responsible for the massacre of soldiers he had led years earlier. When Captain Pender (John Dehner) needs a scout, Hoss suggests Charlie, who insists Hoss come along. While on the trail the soldiers find water poisoned by Cutter (Peter Whitney), Charlie's predecessor.

Guest Stars: Henry Hull, Peter Whitney,
John Dehner, Harry Carey Jr., Lane Bradford,
    Don Collier

    Written by: Robert E. Thompson

    Directed by: James Neilson

"The Mission" is a classic favorite episode and it's got the best special guest actors like Henry Hull, Peter Whitney and Don Collier, my favorite movie actors and Don Collier is the best and I like him and I probably think Don Collier might know Marshall Reed (the special guest star from Bonanza: The Courtship") and Robert E. Thompson, is one of the best screenwriters and he also wrote other Bonanza episodes including "Vendetta", "Blood on the Land", "Escape to the Ponderosa" and "The Mission". I think Robert E. Thompson could probably eat chocolate dip or chocolate glazed donuts or timbits and we'd call Robert E. Thompson "The Thompson Donut Guy" and make one of the cakes called "ROBERT E. THOMPSON'S BEST BIG CHOCOLATE GLAZED FUDGE DONUT CAKE" and it would be delicious with whipped cream and ice cream and you should have it sometime. Delicious!

I hope you all love Bonanza!

I loved, liked, enjoyed and I loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Description

The Spitfire and Hurricanes of the RAF were the shield of Britain during the dark days of the Battle of Britain. In comparison to the huge diversity of aircraft developed by Germany, the RAF concentrated on constantly improving a few tried and tested machines which served Britain well, throughout the course of the war. This is the story of the fighters which saved a nation.

          Description

The Stuka was thought invincible by Germany's Luftwaffe after its initial success in Poland and France, where its `whistling' siren during a dive announced its arrival. The Spitfire design was based on racing seaplanes. After a few experimental prototypes had been built, the Spitfire emerged as a true killing machine. Learn more about these fascinating aircrafts in these informative programs.

          Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Concerning the Stuka portion of the DVD.......2004-04-23

I was dissapointed by the Stuka portion of this DVD. Firstly, there were historical errors. For example, the Ju87B series aircraft did NOT have two machine guns in the rear gunner's position like the DVD stated. Secondly, the video clips used in this DVD were used multiple times throughout the DVD. Furthermore, a large portion of the clips had nothing to do with the Stuka at all and showed Ju52s, He111, and Bf109s instead. For the most part, the Stuka video on this DVD seems roughly and quickly patched together, with the most positive aspect of it being a few short clips of first-hand information from WWII Stuka pilot veterens. If you want an accurate picture of what the Stuka really was, find a good book on the subject instead.
