Excellent but with one reservation.......2006-10-29
I bought this to show to my 5th grade class as I delve into the study of reptiles throughout the year. However, I had to stop the video when it got to the graphic activity of procreation. As a public school teacher, I cannot show this. It always is an issue for me as I am unable to show so many wonderful and educational videos due to this very issue. Why does every nature animal video need to show the animals procreating? You've excluded a big audience. Other than that, the video was wonderful. Sadly, I was the only one able to see it and was never able to show it to any of my classes.
Great DVD at low price.......2003-08-24
The Wildlife Stores series is a very high quality documentary set. Why they are so cheap to buy is a mystery to me. Very thorough coverage of crocs ans snakes.

The vertigo-inducing ups and downs of the 1980s and '90s business world is cunningly intertwined with an unusual romance in Friends and Crocodiles, an intriguing tv-movie from BBC auteur Stephen Poliakoff. Paul (Damian Lewis, Band of Brothers), a wealthy developer, hires Lizzie (Jodhi May, The Turn of the Screw) on a whim to be his secretary--and then, after she helps him marshal his wide-ranging ideas into a shape that could be put into action, drives her away with his self-destructive need for chaos. But over the next couple of decades, as their careers rise and fall, their paths keep crossing. Each has something the other needs to truly do great things, but their contrasting temperaments make collaboration almost impossible. This description may sound dry, but the movie isn't; writer/director Poliakoff and his cast have crafted vivid, believable characters thrust into tense, often visually spectacular circumstances--the parties on Paul's estate will inspire both envy and disgust, while scenes from the venture capitalist world are almost unnerving as they capture the foolhardy confidence of businesspeople feeling their way in the dark. The push and pull of Paul and Lizzie's relationship will feel strikingly familiar to anyone who's had an intense work relationship, a romance not of the flesh or even the mind, but of the will to achieve. A fascinating fable of imagination and discipline. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Paul Reynolds is a Gatsby like figure: owner of a magnificent house, a host of grand parties, and a collector of interesting people. He persuades Lizzie Thomas, a secretary in a local estate agent to come and work for him as his assistant, to bring some order to his chaos. He inspires her with his enthusiasm and imagination, and frustrates her with his apparent carelessness and destructiveness, which culminates in her calling the police as a great party is turned over by local troublemakers, seemingly with Paul's tacit approval. But their paths are destined to cross again and again as Lizzie, with the help of some of those she met at Paul's house, rises through the changing landscape of corporate Britain. This is a story of a meaningful and powerful relationship, about those rare people who profoundly influence and shape our lives.
DVD Features:
Interviews:Interviews with Stephen Poliakoff, Damian Lewis and Jodhi May. Commentary from Stephen Poliakoff & Jodhi May.

Squandering wealth and talent.......2006-06-26
When Stephen Poliakoff, the prolific British screenwriter
and director, is at his best, he has few peers. But like
Woody Allen, he is too prolific and apparently has no
friends to tell him NOT to release some new creation
of his, and he doesn't seem to lack for funding either.
Hence, on the heels of his BBC gem, THE LAST PRINCE,
he has produced two new movies, one of them so awful
that I shall not even bother with the other.
In a 2006 TV-movie, FRIENDS AND CROCODILES, he spent
a small fortune to mount a lavish production of an
incoherent story about an eccentric American (played
by Damiel Lewis) who has somehow made a fortune in
England and bought a lavish estate. One day he impulsively
hires as his personal assistant a young woman (Jodhi May)
whom he has seen a few times strolling at the perimeter
of his property. He tells her he wants her to organize
his voluminous creative files, but soon after she does
so, he throws a party to which he invites low-lifes and vandals
who trash his property and thoroughly destroy all the
work she has done for him. She quits, of course, but
years later, after a chance encounter, she meets him and
recommends him for a high-paying job as a creative con-
sultant in the company she works for, and he repeats the same
self-destructive pattern. Despite the opulence of the
production, none of this makes any sense-- at most, the
script should have been labelled "rough notes for a future
screenplay." Despite the impressive cast for his
sequel movie, GIDEON'S DAUGHTER, including Bill
Nighy, Miranda Richardson and Robert Lindsay, I shall
abstain.
Terribly disappointing.......2006-03-05
This film starts off with great swirling Felliniesque pageantry, with Damian Lewis doing a brilliant perfectly tuned & on-target portrayal of a calm cool feral madman entrepreneur of the 1960s or 1970s, Paul Reynolds, surrounded by a collection of pretentious sycophants whose archetypes range back to the early Roman era. They party & posture amid the grounds of Paul's palatial estate when Lizzie strolls through, straight & serious Lizzie, for whom Paul develops an inexplicable attraction that ultimately leads to his & the film's doom. Lizzie, fresh from secretarial school, is hired by Paul as his personal assistant, although she at no time displays any sign of aptitude for either business or politics. Given the task of organizing Paul's vast collection of notes & papers into some kind of accessibility, she proudly displays her accomplishment: everything's been prettily packaged & shelved into four big color groups, bright cheery boxes with not a label in sight. Apparently she's interpreted her duties to be interior decor.
As played by Jodhi May, Lizzie portions her expressions out in either coy tilted-head smirks that teenage girls give dad when they want $80 for new jeans and violently hysterical outbursts that make you wonder if this all takes place in an alternate universe that knows no psychotherapy.
There are plenty of other problems placing this film in the known world, although it tries hard to represent specific points in time, *eras* as it refers self-consciously to them. There's pot-smoking, group sex & communal living, so is it the 1960s or the 1970s or the 1980s? Early on, Paul dreamily says to Lizzie, "Computers, you should get into computers, that's where the future is. Women used to prevail in the field of computers but now the guys are taking over." Oh yeah, when was that? Before mainframes or after?
As the film became progressively more choppy & episodic, I felt I was watching a pastiche of "Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead" (sans Shakespeare or Stoppard) as done by Ed Wood, all the real action taking place on an alternate stage/screen.
Vague generalizations substitute for plot movement as grand fluffy pronouncements as made about corporations being hippos & the future of business being in telecommunications & the internet rather than vacuum cleaners. Oh yeah? What heppened to PCs & cell phones?
Too bad. The first 20 minutes at Paul's estate and the ideas driving Friends & Crocodiles along with Damian Lewis's fine performance were really promising. Terrific title, too. But the title's explanation & the rest of the movie are a terrible letdown.

Gabriele now runs a successful antique appraisal company in Paris. He lives in a fine, automated apartment which his lover Claire compares to an impenetrable box. Gabriele is haunted by his troubled youth, which is presented through flashbacks. He and his baby brother Martino were bastards. Their father was the wealthy Giancarlo Giannini who already had a family. After Gabriele's feisty and independent mother died, he and his brother were taken into their father's home. Though living in luxury's lap, the now adolescent Gabriele was mistreated by his two hateful half-brothers. He eventually ran away from that house. This is the motive behind his revenge. KILLER INSTINCT
CROCODILES
"Jaws on Land"
KILLER INSTINCT features Rob Bredl as host, safari guide and "Animal Whisperer" into the world of fearsome creatures. Going barefoot, Bredl has been catching animals this way since he was a young boy. He wants people to share his love of the natural world, and he does this with an uncanny ability to handle the world's most dangerous animals. His animals are in as natural a state as possible, none are drugged or tame. Bredl uses his experience and unique understanding of the creatures' instinct to his advantage.
Raised alongside them in the crocodile infested wetlands of Australia, Bredl now breeds and cares for many crocodiles that are large man-eaters. You will enter the crocodile's hunting grounds, watch them wait patiently and silently, and then strike with lightening speed and crushing force.
Bredl uses the reptile's instincts to predict their behavior. He proves that humans can live with crocodiles, providing they respect the single-minded response of the crocodilian mind - the killer instinct.

Description
Is the increase in maneaters and mankillers the result of our actions? What is making today's predators develop a taste for human flesh? Do successful conservation programs, movements of refugees and overfishing of the waterways create an imbalance to which nature can only react? These are just some of the questions raised by this absorbing series.

Pretty much the worst wildlife DVD I've ever seen.......2006-02-07
No direction, too much face time for the host, bottom-of the barrel animal footage, and it was fairly boring. Stick to Nature, Discovery Channel, or National Geographic. I will never buy another independently made nature DVD again, especially not from this guy

Product Description
Germany released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. You need multi-region PAL/NTSC DVD player to view it in USA/Canada. LANGUAGES: English (Dolby Digital 2.0), German (Dolby Digital 2.0), WIDESCREEN, SYNOPSIS: Handsome, monied, educated, and with a bright future in the medical profession, Steven Griscz (Jude Law) would seem to be the perfect suitor. But he has a disturbing secret: He's a serial killer who slays his girlfriends only after they have fallen in love with him. It has something to do with his rare blood disease, which we can only hope is extremely rare. Director Po-Chih Leong creates and sustains a singularly eerie tone in this non-traditional vampire saga that recalls the sickening psychological ploy of Michael Powell's horror classic Peeping Tom. Law's clever, tortured, very glib modern-day vampire is a refreshing contrast to the typical portrayal of bloodsuckers, but even better is Elina Lowensohn's unexpected reaction when she discovers her new paramour's condition. This is not an action movie, which is another refreshing aspect; it is verbally oriented, with Law turning on the charm not just to lure women into his life but to keep them there, as it is essential to his fevered mind that they must love him before their blood can save him. That said, the bloodlust of the finale is not for the squeamish, but the quiet chills and horrific thrills of the majority of the film will appeal to those looking for something quite different in their horror: the real thing.
