NASA's worst nightmare turned into one of the space agency's most heroic moments in 1970, when the Apollo 13 crew was forced to hobble home in a disabled capsule after an explosion seriously damaged the moon-bound spacecraft. Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, and Bill Paxton play (respectively) astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise in director Ron Howard's intense, painstakingly authentic docudrama. The Apollo 13 crew and Houston-based mission controllers race against time and heavy odds to return the damaged spacecraft safely to Earth from a distance of 205,500 miles. Using state-of-the-art special effects and ingenious filmmaking techniques, Howard and his stellar cast and crew build nail-biting tension while maintaining close fidelity to the facts. The result is a fitting tribute to the Apollo 13 mission and one of the biggest box-office hits of 1995. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Apollo 13 is a gripping tale of moon travel.......2007-05-19

I remember seeing this movie in the theater, and it was awesome. It still is, on DVD. The astronauts almost didn't make it back. One of the top ten movies ever made.

The extras are nice, if you have the time. Together they take at least a couple of hours.

4 out of 5 stars Review.......2007-05-07

I had to replace my original Apollo 13 DVD which, after several successful playings, started to fail to "play back." Possibly, this failure was exacerbated by my attempted "fix" which was to clean the business side of the DVD with an (electronic grade) 99% alcohol cleaning solution.

At any rate, I am happy to have the new disk.

(Of the many [more than 100] DVDs I have, this is the only instance of media failure I have experienced.)

3 out of 5 stars Keep It Honest !.......2007-04-29

Good movie of a great human adventure, well acted and professionally filmed.
Looks a bit stiff and un-imaginative in the developpement of the "story" but overall a very fine visualisation of this tragic-heroic piece of American history.

5 out of 5 stars Can't say enough good about this movie!.......2007-04-12

There were a few "hollywood" inaccuracies that bothered me. For example, it was Meniere's disease, not an ear infection that plagued Al Shepard. Furthermore, it wasn't Menieres that kept him off Apollo 13. It was an administrative decision based on the need to give him and his rookie crew more time to train.

Other than those minor nitpicks, I REALLY enjoyed this film. I didn't obsess over the missed details, mind you. This is, after all, a hollywood adaptation of Jim Lovell's recounting. Facts are going to be skewed a bit here and there. As entertainment value goes, it was wonderful! Suspenseful, emotional and, all-in-all, pretty close to the reality of the situation.

As historical movies go, it actually wasn't too bad on accuracy. And what it lacked in accuracy, it more than made up for in sheer entertainment value.

Jim Lovell's cameo in the end was the icing on the cake.

5 out of 5 stars well told technically accurate film.......2007-02-28

I first saw this film at the cinemas back in 1995 and have seen it countless times since then. I have always been a space enthusiast and remember reading books about astronauts and the Saturn V rocket as a kid. This film is probably the most technically accurate spaceflight film out there. I love how all the zero G scenes are real (filmed in KC-135 aircraft) and all of the switches, lights etc. in the Command module are 100% realistic. The Saturn V liftoff was incredible. This film is still as exciting to watch today as it was back when it came out.

John Badham's family-oriented adventure comedy, though obviously hatched in the wake of E.T. and Star Wars, manages to create its own identity through a sweet tone and an affectionate sense of fun. Military robot Number 5, a well-armed killing machine, is zapped by lightning during a test and emerges with a consciousness, curiosity, a wacky sense of humor, and a new peace-loving philosophy. Ally Sheedy (who debuted in Badham's hit WarGames) is the animal lover whose home is sanctuary for a zoo-full of strays and who adopts the adolescent robot. Steve Guttenberg is the goofy but reclusive robotics designer who goes off in search of his creation to save him from the gun-happy army. The mix of gentle slapstick and innocent romance makes for a harmless family comedy. It veers toward the terminally cute, what with 5's hyperactive antics and E.T.-ish voice, and the mangled grammar of Guttenberg's East Indian sidekick (Fisher Stevens) threatens to become offensive, but Badham's breezy direction keeps the film on track. Sheedy and Guttenberg deliver spirited and engaging performances, but most importantly the robot emerges as a real person. Give credit to designer Syd Mead, an army of puppeteers and robotics operators, and the cartoony voice of Tim Blaney: Number 5 is alive. --Sean Axmaker

Description

Something wonderful has happened--Number Five is alive! Steve Guttenberg and Ally Sheedy co-star in this high tech comedy adventure about Number Five, a robot who escapes into the real world after he short circuits in an electrical storm and decides that he's human. Because he's carrying destructive weapons, the Defense Department and his designer (Guttenberg) are desperate to find him. But Number Five is being protected by a young woman (Sheedy) who is teaching him a gentler way of life.

5 out of 5 stars Fair Warning Before Watching:.......2007-07-07

I haven't seen this since I was a child. It came out when I was 10.
I only got one sentence to desctibe this movie! Make sure you are only a few inches from the washroom when you see this; it's that humorous!

2 out of 5 stars Too much profanity for a comedy!.......2007-05-27

While the basic plot is fine and the robot is charming, the acting is weak and the addition of sexual jokes and swear words does nothing to enhance the movie. Skip this one and jump to Short Circuit 2, which is a much more entertaining movie, and the acting is better too.

5 out of 5 stars Great Robot Movie All of Times.......2007-05-22

I love the movie when I watched that with closed-captioning on HBO 10+ years ago. Unfortunately, this DVD doesn't contains Closed-Captioning. I love the extra features and the quality of DVD is great! I was disappointed IMAGINE company didn't add one very important feature for Deaf - a closed captioning. Amazon did put down Closed-Captioning and I bought it, and found it doesn't contains with Closed-Captioning. Of course, I was disappointed and knowing I couldn't do much. (Short Circuit 2 has Closed-Captioning and English Subtitle with Tri-Star Columbia Company.). Hope Fox company will release this title and add this very important feature a Closed-Captioning.

4 out of 5 stars preview film before showing to children.......2007-05-14

I had seen this film many years ago.
I had forgotten how much "questionable" language and the one incidence
of inappropriate "finger" humor that there was.
I would not show this film to children.
What an enjoyable movie to be ruined by gratuitous PG13 language.

Elvis Presley's seventh film was the first of his "Hawaii trilogy" (including Girls! Girls! Girls! and Paradise, Hawaiian Style). While its story is daft--the King has just been released from his Army posting in Italy and returned to the islands, where he's trying to avoid working in his father's fruit business--the music is not: "Blue Hawaii," "Almost Always True," and the beautiful "Can't Help Falling in Love." Angela Lansbury plays Elvis's mother, who can't seem to get through to him. Directed by the star's frequent collaborator, Norman Taurog (G.I. Blues). --Tom Keogh

After dominating the teen-movie genre for the bulk of the 1980s, writer-producer (and sometimes director) John Hughes proved that he had at least one good movie left in him before squandering his talent on lame comedies throughout the 1990s. Like The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful treated its teenaged characters like real people with real feelings, hopes, fears, and desire. Mary Stuart Masterson gives a great performance as a tomboy drummer named Watts who's secretly in love with her best friend, Keith (Eric Stoltz), an aspiring artist who is oblivious to her affection because he's got a crush on Amanda (Lea Thompson), the popular high school beauty. Watts will even go so far as to chauffeur a date for Keith and Amanda, if only to prove--after a lot of patient, emotional anguish--that she's better for Keith than Amanda could ever be. The movie's drama comes from Keith's gradual realization that there's more to love than surface attraction, and Hughes gets extra mileage out of the romantic confusion by allowing Thompson's character to be more than a shallow campus cutie. All three of the leads are good fits in their roles, and this was one of the few teen films of the '80s to add genuine depth to its mainstream appeal. It's one of the few John Hughes movies to stand the test of time. --Jeff Shannon

Description

A young tomboy, Watts (Mary Stuart Masterson), finds her feelings for her best friend, Keith (Eric Stoltz), run deeper than just friendship when he gets a date with the most popular girl in school, Amanda, (Lea Thompson). Unfortunately, the girl's old boyfriend, Hardy (Craig Scheffer), who is from the rich section of town, is unable to let go of her, and plans to get back at Keith.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent piece of work by John Hughes.......2007-06-28

This is a movie that didn't get the attention of others movies in the 80's (Weird Science, Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club) but it sits right up there with them, this film has one of the best soundtracks of the 80's but is missing to songs Beats so Lonely from Charlie Sexton and Catch my Fall of Billy Idol.

In some parts is like Pretty in Pink but with a more real feel to it, all the young actors are in the top of there game (Eric Stolz, Lea Thompson, Mary Stuart Masterson and the always good Craig Sheffer) here but Candace Cameron and Elias Koteas steal this film with there portrait of Keith Sister and the School Badie, vintage John Hughes for the people that where in High School that time this is a must have DVD in your collection of great eighties films about High School crowd.

4 out of 5 stars Review of Some Kind of Wonderful.......2007-06-27

This is a well-acted film about young love and all its ups and downs. The three main characters are excellent in their roles, and there's a good supporting cast. If you want a happy ending, you'll get it with this movie!

5 out of 5 stars Some Kind of Good Movie.......2007-06-27

I have been a big fan of the 80's movies and this one is one of my favorites! The story flows well with the characters, and the cast works very well together and they seem very believable. My favorite character was the typical bad boy who became friends with Eric Stolz and the party scene towards the end was the real highlight of the movie for me. It was somewhat predictable but has a great ending. I can watch this movie over and over again and not get sick of it. Enjoy!!

This adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, scripted by Francis Ford Coppola, puts costume design and art direction above the intricacies of character. It's certainly a handsome try, and perhaps no movie could capture The Great Gatsby in its entirety. Robert Redford is an interesting casting choice as Gatsby, the millionaire isolated in his mansion, still dreaming of the woman he lost. And Sam Waterston is perfect as the narrator, Nick, who brings the dream girl Daisy Buchanan back to Gatsby. No, the problem seems to be that director Jack Clayton fell in love with the flapper dresses and the party scenes and the Jazz Age tunes, ending up with a Classics Illustrated version of a great book rather than a fresh, organic take on the text. While Redford grows more quietly intriguing in the film, Mia Farrow's pallid performance as Daisy leaves you wondering why Gatsby, or anyone else, should care so much about his grand passion. The effective supporting cast includes Bruce Dern as Daisy's husband, and Scott Wilson and Karen Black as the low-rent couple whose destinies cross the sun-drenched protagonists. (That's future star Patsy Kensit as Daisy's little daughter.) The film won two Oscars--not surprisingly, for costumes and musical score. --Robert Horton

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Gorgeous movie.......2007-06-28

This movie was lovingly made, and it shows in every gorgeous scene. There are some slow moments, but it's a fine adaptation of one of the greatest novels of all time. Redford was made to play Jay Gatsby, the hopeless romantic, and Mia Farrow is picture-perfect as the fickle Daisy Fay Buchanan.

3 out of 5 stars Mia Farrow sucks.......2007-06-27

While this version of the movie is truer to the novel than the PBS version, some of the Redford/Farrow scenes are hard to watch. My students like the newer version better because the acting is more credible and Mira Sorvino is a "hot" Daisy, but this is closer to the book. We need a third version of this movie with me as director.

1 out of 5 stars THE GREAT GATUBY.......2007-06-12

It reached by even three though only one was ordered.
The order for the cancellation was disregarded.
It resents it very much.
It wants it according to returned goods.

4 out of 5 stars Sam R-M's thoughts on the Gatsby film.......2007-05-29

This interpretation of The Great Gatsby portrayed my view of the setting and of Nick very well. The contrast between Gatsby's house and the Valley of the Ashes enlightened my picture of these places when I read about them. As for the characters, I thought Nick Carraway was performed brilliantly. He was the perfect contrast to self-absorbed high class society and portrayed Nick's sense of quiet akwardness. Tom Buchanan should have been a larger and more intimidating character. It said in the book that his muscles could be seen moving through his clothes and that when he walked into a room he filled the doorway, yet in this movie he appears to be too normally built for a football player. Daisy's character annoyed me, though this may have been done on purpose, and her scenes with Gatsby at his house when they are portrayed "in love" were so cheesy that I could not help but laugh. Overall, however, the movie is a great choice for anyone who is seeking a visual portrayal of The Great Gatsby because it follows the book fairly accurately, though I was not pleased with the absense of Owl Eyes in the film. The movie version of the Great Gatsby was very similar to the book but better. The movie had alot of the same quotes as the book did and allowed you to get a visual representation of what was going on. My favorite character in the movie was definately Jordan Baker. She was most like the Jordan Baker I imagined when reading the book and was cast perfectly for the movie. She was showed how arrogant all of the people in their society were and definately broght the sense of how rich they were to the movie. Nick was cast good too and he proved to be a good actor. The movie is old but yet it seems as if you are watching a fairly new movie. The scenes at Gatsby's parties are very good and really bring out the feelings of the times. Overall, the movie is really worth seeing. It is definately a lot better than the book. If I were to change one thing, I would like to see mrytle be played by a different actress. Other than that though, it was excellent.

Twin brother codirectors Albert and Alan Hughes planned their first film, the 1991 ghetto crime drama Menace II Society as a response to John Singleton's Boyz N the Hood, which they considered wimpy and moralistic. They set their sights on The Deer Hunter in this ambitious follow-up, and they just about pull it off. Larenz Tate (from Why Do Fools Fall in Love) plays Anthony Curtis, an open-hearted African American teenager who gets shipped out to Vietnam with several of his pals, witnesses unspeakable horrors, and then struggles to readjust to civilian life. The evolving textures of life in a declining inner-city neighborhood over a period of a decade are seamlessly evoked, and there's enough nuanced character development and personal interaction for a seven-hour miniseries. Still in their early 20s, the Hughes brothers are already poised and masterful moviemakers; they cover an enormous amount of historical and emotional ground, and every twist and turn is crystal clear. They betray their inexperience only at the very end, in an elaborately staged heist sequence that, while stunningly executed, feels a bit desperate, as if they were reaching blindly for a big payoff. Chris Tucker (Rush Hour) has a startling supporting role as a kid who becomes junkie during the war, and never quite recovers. --David Chute

but towards the end it's greate! Highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Great movie and Great soundtrack.....................2007-01-15

Dead Presidents tells the story of 3 childhood friends that are sent off to Vietnam right after graduating high school. What awaits them when they get home from the war sets the stage for this dramatic piece of art.

Bokeem steals the show as Cleon. This is my movie!

4 out of 5 stars 3.5--"People out of work everywhere and the government just be throwing money away!"..........2006-09-07

The Hughes brothers certainly had the right idea in mind making this a cool heist, and I give them credit for trying, but they bite off more than they can chew. Dead Presidents is a really good film. Most people think this movie is all about robbing a bank but it really isn't even though it comes at the end.

The most obvious problem is the film tries to be too many things at once. It starts as a ghetto drama-then it's a war movie-then it ends as a crime thriller! (More than a bit reminiscent of Kubrick's "The Killing.") This could have worked with the proper care, but DP suffers from trying to cram too much story in just under two hours. An extra twenty minutes would properly flesh out the plot. The film opens in the late sixties as we meet Anthony (Larenz Tate), Anthony's girl Juanita (Rose Jackson), his friend Skip (Chris Tucker-as bug-eyed as ever) and boss Kirby (Keith David). We follow Anthony through his first experiences with sex, violence, and family resistance. Anthony wants to join the Marines and through a rather clever edit, we are plunged into the Vietnam War head first. The Hughes Bros. handle this material well, although it gets a bit busy with all the Vietnam-isms: drug use, severed heads, mercy killings, Agent Orange, air strikes, etc. The audience discovers that before the war Anthony got Juanita pregnant, and that he has a baby girl "back in the world." It is a lot of material to cover in the brief period of time, and we only get a brief glimpse of what is was like to be a black soldier in country.

We jump back to the "world", where we witness the domestic turmoil the war has brought upon Anthony and Juanita. Another pitfall is the Juanita character, who is so abrasive that we feel no sympathy towards her. The scene where Anthony assaults her is problematic; I mean what did she expect waging the verbal attack that she does on an alcoholic Vietnam Vet? The confrontation with Cutty (Clifton Powell), Juantia's sugar daddy, is contrived and goes on far too long. Broke and alone, Anthony, in his moral confusion, turns to the film's equivalent of the Black Panther Party for support...

This is where `Dead Presidents' abandons the drama for the above mentioned heist aspects. Ignoring the pragmatic problems with the robbery (i.e. face paint instead of masks), it is a rather poor way to resolve a film where so much time has been expended creating complex characters. One does not get the sense that Anthony is desperate enough to do something that goes so much against his character. The other members of the heist have not been properly set up to take part in it either. It seems tacked on, almost an afterthought to the plot proper. Anyway the heist does not go as planned; everything leading to the final shot of `Dead Presidents' seems anticlimactic, leaving many questions unanswered.

One of the major flaws of the film is the lead performance by Larenz Tate; he is a good actor, but does not seem dynamic enough to bring Anthony through a narrative arc that gets lost in the clouds. The editing leaves scenes unfinished and cold. The story: If the Hughes Bros. had focused on one or two aspects of the plot, we would have been presented with a more thoughtful and detailed story. I'll give them credit for being ambitious though, but experienced film makers also know what to cut from a film when everything seems like a good idea. But that is a skill that comes with time.

4 out of 5 stars Dead Presidents is alive and well!.......2006-05-29

Dead Presidents is an engaging war movie directed by Allen and Albert Hughes, also known as the Hughes brothers (From Hell), and featuring an excellent cast including Larenz Tate (Crash), Chris Tucker (Rush Hour), Keith David (There's Something About Mary), Bokeem Woodbine (Almost Heroes), and Terrence Howard (Hustle And Flow).

Tate plays Anthony Curtis, a young African American, who joins the army straight out of high school in 1969, fights in Vietnam, and returns to America to find no respect and no job anywhere. Anthony then plans a doomed heist with his former war buddies including the heroin addicted Skip, played by the electrifying and hilarious Tucker, pool hall owner and big time hustler named Kirby, played by David, and priest, played by Woodbine.

What makes Presidents an extraordinary film is its depiction of black life before, during, and after the Vietnam war, and how they (the black veterans) got it worse than their peers, and a remarkable screenplay. The movie also succeeds in bringing about a well designed late 60's, early 70's theme with the music, fashion, and lingo.

I rented "4 Brothers" and I did NOT ENJOY it, so after that fiasco, I wanted to see a REAL homie movie. Thank goodness I own "Dead Prez" and after all these years it still stands the test of time. The thing that makes this film good is the story and the 5* acting. Every actor in this film is in my oppinion, brilliant. The guy from "Hustle and Flow" has a small part in this, I knew he was good from the get, it's nice to see him getting bigger roles. This and "Set It Off" have got to be the best homie movies out there right now, in my oppinion. Dead Prez gives bank robbery a heart if that makes any sense. This is not a mindless action flick. It's intellectual, political, and deep. And it's all set to a killer soundtrack.

Two bright facets light up Hell's Angels, a 1930s aviation melodrama. One is the extraordinary footage re-creating World War I air battles; the other is 18-year-old Jean Harlow. Both are enough to offset the cornball story and stilted dialogue, the latter added late in production, with the advent of motion-picture sound. The movie, almost three years in the making, with a budget of nearly $4 million--very high for its day--was the obsession of eccentric millionaire director Howard Hughes. Apparently, the authenticity of the dogfight scenes was so important to Hughes that he piloted a plane himself, and ended up breaking a few bones in the process. More shocking, it's said that three pilots lost their lives making the movie. The sequence depicting an epic encounter between the British Royal Flying Corps and a German zeppelin is especially stunning, thanks to the eye-popping use of hand tinting. A bombing raid on a German munitions depot is also remarkably convincing.

The movie's other bombshell, Jean Harlow, fairly jumps off the screen as an upper-class floozy who plays fast and loose with the two leading men, RFC pilots Monte and Roy Rutledge (Ben Lyon and James Hall), one a scoundrel and one a saint. Harlow glows in the film--it's immediately obvious why her appearance here put her on the fast track to Hollywood stardom. Beauty, sex appeal, vulnerability, audacity--whatever the intangible something is that makes a movie star, it's clear Harlow had it, even as a teenager. --Laura Mirsky

5 out of 5 stars "The Aviator" Created a Great Film.......2007-06-04

My interest in this film was totally spawned by the Hughes' bio film "The Aviator." My only other knowledge of a Hughes film is "The Outlaw" which has its points, but for the most part, a B+ grade western (if that.) "The Aviator" had stressed the flying sequences and the way that Hughes had formed his own air force to produce many of the flight sequences.

My own surprises were largely related to the characters, the wording of the script (this was, after all, started as a silent film, finished as a talkie), and the overall message of the film.

In a more typical film - with a general scenario of 'college buddies go to war' - all the main characters would live to the end, with some sort of heroic death involved that somehow saved the other two; something like "Pearl Harbor" for example. "Hell's Angels" doesn't follow the typical scenario.

And at the end, even though the relative gentility of the military of the Brits and the Germans, war was seen as a bloody business, exercises in futility even when the men who sacrificed their lives to short term gains ultimately are shwon to have gained nothing in the larger picture.

The use of the two brothers as near opposites in personality and behavior seems too obvious now, but there is nothing obvious about the ending!

5 out of 5 stars Hell's Angel.......2007-03-28

Excellent quality picture and sound. A remarkable picture, especially considering that it was released only a few years after the opening of the sound era. Special effects in the zeppelin sequence were superior to many films made during WWII. I don't know the production deails, but it appears that in many of the air scenes the performers were actually in the airplanes (no process screen work). It is good to see this film in conjuncton with "The Aviator".

3 out of 5 stars You have to consider when it's made............2007-03-10

After seeing "The Aviator" we were curious about the movie. I would have given it a 1 star, but my husband said you have to consider WHEN it was made. They all "over acted"back then because they were just coming off silent movies. It was kind of fun to watch it from the stand point of recently seeing "The Aviator". You could see when Hughes was loosing it, you could see the problems he had while making it. I guess my husband was right, a 3 star might be good for this movie. The story was pretty decent, the plane fight was pretty amazing for the time it was made considering they didn't have "CG" back then!!

5 out of 5 stars Terrific WW1 movie.......2007-02-19

I wanted to see this movie for years, finally it happened. I had to laugh at the sound (ladies voices, etc) But I was amazed at the flying sequences.
The overall theme is a typical moral play, but I expected that. If you are interested in WW1 this is a pretty good version.

5 out of 5 stars A classic for the ages.......2007-02-15

Some of the acting is too big for the screen as actors still were trained for the stage, and silents, both of which requires a bigger than life performance. And the scripting may have been rushed somewhat, but for a film over 75 years old this is a real pleasure to watch. You can really lose yourself in the story. In fact there are modern films which appear to have borrowed from the story somewhat - witness the love triangle from the movie Pearl Harbor... A good story, breathtaking action (when CG stunts weren't even a dream) and you have celluloid entertainment for the ages.

Product Description

Fun with The Three Stooges in six zany episodes:

A Plumbing We Will Go(1940): Three would-be plumbers mistake pipes filled with wires for water pipes. Dudley Dickerson's battle in the kitchen is a highlight.

Men In Black(1934): Medical malpractice is an understatement when describing what the Stooges do to the Los Arms Hospital, where they dispense unorthodox advice, flirt with the nurses and battle a babbling intercom system. With: Dell Henderson, Jeannie Roberts and Billy Gilbert.

Micro-phonies (1945): When Curly is mistaken for an opera diva, the Stooges find their calling on the stage as Senorita Cucaracha (Curly) and Senors Mucho and Gusto (Larry and Moe). With: Christine McIntyre, Symona Boniface and Gino Corrado.

Punch Drunks(1934): Larry's rendition of Pop Goes The Weasel transforms Curly from a harmless cream puff into a vicious contender, but when Larry's violin breaks, it threatens Curly's boxing career with a TKO. With: Dorothy Granger and Al Hill.

Three Little Pigskins (1934): When the Stooges are mistaken for star football players, they not only find themselves running for goals but running for their lives when they get mixed up with the gorgeous girlfriends of a group of mobsters. With: Lucille Ball, Gertie Green and Phyllis Crane.

Woman Haters(1934): When Larry breaks his oath to the Woman Haters Club by marrying, he is treated like a traitor by his fellow members. But getting out of the marriage may be even more harmful than anything his friends could ever do to him. The Stooges' first short was done entirely in rhyme. With: Marjorie White.

4 out of 5 stars Hysterical Stooges.......2007-02-13

I got this for my kids. My 8-year-old watches it over and over. He loves Curly, even though he doesn't get all his dialogue and dialect humor. The Stooges were just plain funny.

4 out of 5 stars Early Stooge Madness.......2006-08-23

The "Curly Classics" DVD focuses primarily on the Three Stooges' earliest Columbia two-reelers from 1934. Regardless of uneven material and revolving directors, Moe, Larry and Curly find their slapstick niche in "Punch Drunks," "Three Little Pigskins" and the Oscar-nominated "Men in Black." However, the highlights are two later releases that display the Stooges at full comic throttle: "A Plumbing We Will Go" (1940) and "Micro-Phonies" (1945). The weak link is "Woman Haters" -- a misguided "musical novelty" that emerged as the Stooges' inauspicious Columbia debut. "Curly Classics" remains an enjoyable compilation, but not the total knockout it should have been.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting selection.......2006-03-03

Since the plots of these shorts have already been described by a number of other reviewers, I'll just give my opinions on them and on the DVD overall.

'Woman Haters' is one of those shorts that most fans either love or hate. I didn't care for it that much the first time I saw it, but I do agree that it does get a little better with repeated viewings. It probably would have been a better film if the entire thing hadn't been spoken in rhyme; that device gets old and tired after about a minute. Although I'm confused as to why it was seen fit to be included here. It's not really a Curly classic because Larry is the one who gets the most lines and the leading role!

'Punch Drunks' is a big step up and should have been the first short they released at Columbia. Though it's one of their very early ones, it has a great plot and lots of great comedy. Until about sometime in 1935, they didn't really have their formula down pat yet, but this is one of the early ones that shines and deserves to be called a classic.

I actually think 'Men in Black' is somewhat overrated. It's a really odd short, and there are moments of humor, but nothing I found really that hilarious. I fail to see why this would get an Oscar nomination and is considered by many people to be one of their best. The problem might be that the comedy style is all over the map, like they weren't yet sure what type of humor they wanted to do--verbal, physical, or just plain absurd humor. If this weren't one of their very first shorts, it probably wouldn't have such an important reputation. Although that doesn't mean I think it's one of their worst shorts (far from it).

'Three Little Pigskins,' their fourth short, is another of their very early classics, though taken in comparison to all of their other work, I wouldn't necessarily consider it one of their all-time classics. There's a good solid plot and lots of good humor, and I liked seeing the great character actor Walter Long and how the opening scene reflected the time period of the Great Depression. I also noticed that the middle section of this short borrows from the earlier 1928 Laurel and Hardy short 'We Faw Down.' Once again we see a lovely young lady's hat being blown off of her head and underneath a car, and when our hapless heroes go to retrieve it, they get soaked by a passing street sweeper and are invited back to the home of the woman and her friends. While they're waiting around for their clothes to dry and are wearing clothes given to them by the women, and flirting with them, the ladies' mobster boyfriends show up. The ending is kind of in media res, but everything that came before was so good it doesn't matter that much.

'Micro-Phonies' and 'A-Plumbing We Will Go' are bona fide classics and really deserve their place on this collection. They both have strong plots and lots of great slapstick. They were made at a point in their career when they had long developed their screen personalities and had been at their creative peak for some time.

Overall, this is a pretty good collection, but as aforementioned, I am curious as to why their first four shorts were included as Curly classics. At this point, he hadn't really perfected his screen persona yet (such as in how you can hear him talking in a voice closer to his real off-camera voice instead of the high-pitched baby-like voice he later developed), and you can also tell the other two hadn't gotten their own screen characters down pat either. It seems like it would have made more sense to have included shorts from a wider time range instead of having their first four shorts (all from 1934) and then having the other two be from 1940 and 1945. It's a little curious as to why some of these shorts were included on here, but generally speaking, it is a collection I would recommend getting.

This is a great collection of Three Stooges shorts. It is rightly called "Curly Classics." "A Plumbing We Will Go" is probably my favorite three stooges short - the boys really make a mess of that house!

As first lines go, Scaramouche's is irresistible: "He was born with a gift of laughter, and a sense that the world was mad." This exuberant period adventure is pretty irresistible itself--even more than Captain Blood and The Sea Hawk, likewise derived from Rafael Sabatini novels. Within more or less one day in pre-revolutionary France, devil-may-care Stewart Granger learns he's the bastard offspring of a nobleman, gets orphaned, realizes he's fallen in love with his sister (Janet Leigh), swears to avenge his best friend's murder, becomes a hunted traitor, and breaks into show business. George Sidney directs as if making an MGM musical, only with swashbuckling instead of song-and-dance. The unlikely casting of Granger and Mel Ferrer as overripe nemeses proves delightful, cameraman Charles (Sunrise) Rosher's Technicolor palette alternates commedia dell'arte garishness and misty, Watteau-like imagery, and the climactic six-and-a-half-minute duel all over a Parisian theater is a tour de force. --Richard T. Jameson

5 out of 5 stars A great story and Stewart Granger, too.......2007-05-22

Is it just me? I love Technicolor.

This film is fabulous. The plot moves quickly, and the fencing scenes are great. I really like Stewart Granger; he brings a credibility and a personality and a sense of fun to his characters that makes them very real. And, Stewart Granger did all his own stunts; that always adds to a film. I have to say, the man looks good in tights, too (not many men do).

The famous sword fight is done without any dialogue or background music, which makes it very effective. Modern filmmakers should take note.

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC RASCAL- ROGUE ADVENTURE.......2007-05-08

More over CASSANOVA, DON JUAN, and make way for the man who "was born with the gift of laughter, and the sense that the world was mad", the irrepressable SCARAMOUCHE!
Fencing fans will love the best and longest dual to date and yes, they actually TOOK fencing lessons!..and talk about your O'HENRY endings.. YOU definitly will because THIS is a RARE and seldom televised JEWEL!

5 out of 5 stars The mask of a clown, the heart of a patriot!.......2007-03-19

Andre Moreau (Stewart Granger) strikes a blow for vengeance and the French Revolution while traveling with a theater company, and hides his true identity at night behind the mask of stage clown Scaramouche. The beautiful Lenore (Eleanor Parker) is his love interest in the Theater Company and the lovely Aline de Gaurillac de Bourbon (Janet Leigh) is his love interest in the French nobility. Aline just so happens to be `engaged to Noel Marquis de Maynes (Mel Ferrer), one of the greatest swordsmen in all of France. The swordplay, the wordplay, and the horseplay are all directed beautifully by "The Three Musketeers" (1948) director George Sidney. Granger excelled playing these swashbuckler roles and did a magnificent job here. The period costumes and the sets are especially well done and a film never looked better in Technicolor than this one! Scaramouche is hunted by the French government due to his popularity with the people, and his ability to out fence many of the royal court's aristocratic men. Several have died at his brilliant sword's point. "Scaramouche" is one of the best swashbuckler films of its kind and belongs in every classic adventure dvd library. Special features include: Interview with Mel Ferrer / feature; "En Garde: Great Screen Swordfights" and the films theatrical trailer. En Garde!

4 out of 5 stars Great entertainment.......2007-03-16

A gorgeous swashbuckler film in technicolor. Splendid sets, beautiful scenery. Technically perfect. The cast is excellent. Granger fits his role perfectly. The story is not so well developed, a little loose and childish. Makes a wonderful film for the young ones: It has enough action, duels, comedy and romance to keep their attention.

However, one would have wished they had thought more on the adults too.

5 out of 5 stars En Garde!.......2007-02-15

I admit that I assumed this was another typical swashbuckling film. Boy, was I wrong. This is a technicolor spectacular showcasing the charm of Stewart Granger, fiery intensity of Eleanor Parker and the athleticism of Mel Ferrer. Janet Leigh is beautiful but does not have very much to do here. This is a wonderful film with lots of drama and comedy. I really highly recommend this as a family film. Granger really gets to show off his talent as a comedian. Parker is exquisitely gorgeous and high strung as a gypsy woman. The swordplay btwn Granger & Ferrer is exciting. This ranks with "Mark of Zorro" starring Tyrone Power for captivating the viewer's attention.
