In the last year of World War II, German defeat was inevitable. Yet rather than reinforcing his troops and focusing his efforts on battle, Hitler chose to renew his campaign to eliminate the Jews of Europe. Hungary, which had remained mostly untouched during the war, found her Jews being rounded up and shipped off to concentration camps where they were systematically and brutally killed during these last days. This documentary, directed by James Moll and produced through the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation, whose goal is to document the memories of those who lived through the Holocaust, records the stories of five Hungarian Jews who managed to survive.

The five survivors, all now living in the United States, movingly tell how they made it and recount the tragedies they witnessed: Tom Lantos, a Congressman from California, whose 17 grandchildren are a gift from his two daughters to try to make up for the families Lantos and his wife lost; Alice Lok Cahana, an artist who uses her painting to testify to what she saw and to grieve for the meaningless death of her sister Edith; Bill Basch, who while working for the resistance escaped from Hungarian police by joining a group of Jews that were, unknowingly, being led to Buchenwald; Renee Firestone, an educator at Simon Wiesenthal Center's Educational Outreach Program, whose touching connection to the past is discovered in the simple gift of a bathing suit given to her by her father; and Irene Zisblatt, a grandmother who smuggled out, at tremendous risk, a few precious diamonds in order to buy bread when there was no more food to be had. Other interviewees include American liberators, a superkommando, and a Nazi doctor who performed experiments on camp inmates.

While the stories are tragic and watching this documentary is a tearful experience, the final message is one of hope, as the five people return to Hungary and the camps with their families to confront their pasts and say their prayers. While the occasionally graphic footage will disturb, this Oscar-winning film is one that should be shared with family as a way of educating and reminding us, "Never again." --Jenny Brown

The director/producer team that created Trainspotting turn their dynamic cinematic imaginations to the classic science fiction scenario of the last people on Earth. Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up from a coma to find London deserted--until he runs into a mob of crazed plague victims. He gradually finds other still-human survivors (including Naomie Harris), with whom he heads off across the abandoned countryside to find the source of a radio broadcast that promises salvation. 28 Days Later is basically an updated version of The Omega Man and other post-apocalyptic visions; but while the movie may lack originality, it makes up for it in vivid details and creepy paranoid atmosphere. 28 Days Later's portrait of how people behave in extreme circumstances--written by novelist Alex Garland (The Beach)--will haunt you afterward. Also featuring Brendan Gleeson (The General, Gangs of New York) and Christopher Eccleston (Shallow Grave, The Others). --Bret Fetzer

A powerful virus, which locks victims into a permanent state of murderous rage, has transformed the world around him into a seemingly desolate wasteland. 5 out of 5 stars Not a conventional zombie flick, but destined to go down as one of the greats........2007-07-07

This is not the classic zombie movie with the monsters moving at a snail's pace and moaning loudly announcing their arrival. No it isn't.

Don't get me wrong, I respect the classics. The fathers of the zombie films have their place in history, and no one can take that away.

This film takes it to the next level and it works. The desolation when the protagonist wakes up is so consuming. The isolation that comes from being stuck on an island is haunting. The sadness of loosing family feels so real. The barbaric violence that is unleashed during times of crisis is realistic and gruesome. The glimmer of hope is enchanting. The deception of salvation is disheartening. The perversion of those in power is very, very realistic.

This movie is gritty, real, and enveloping. Great horror flick, full of suspense and realism. A great buy for those who enjoy horror, and especially for those aficionados of post-apocalyptic madness such as myself.

4 out of 5 stars Hey it Could Happen...........2007-07-05

I thought this movie was great. It's one of those what if movies that was done really well. Not corny like some where it isn't believable.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!!!.......2007-07-05

This is one great movie. I lived in London for several months and watching this great European city devastated in a so visually convincing manner was a unique experience to me.

The acting is superb, particularly that of Cillian Murphy who portraits Jim, a humble delivery man who had had a traffic accident, who is the film's main character. (On a personal note, I think Murphy is soon to be recognized as the first-caliber actor he is.)

In several days, 28 Days Later is also a breakthrough movie. Unlike past zombie movies who heavily relied on actors moving awkward and slowly, this movie makes them FAST and all of preternatural stamina. They "infected ones" also cough large amounts of blood, which can infect other people's membranes. By adding this new, well-thought, the film makes the zombies waaaaay scarier. Also, while the latter can barely think, they capable of enduring virtually any kind of pain --- including running with their bodies on blames. Also the reason they became zombies (or, more appropriately, "infected") is because their bodies has a rare, experimental virus called the Rage Virus. This man-made microorganism is transmitted in a matter of seconds by bites or by contact with membranes --eyes, mouth, and so forth.

All characters are deep, contrasting, and utterly convincing. Jim is an idealist, ready to die for his love ones; Selena begins a pessimist who thinks humankind doomed, someone who would kill her own father, mother, or best friend to remain "in the blink of an eye" to remain alive for just one more day. As time pass by, Selena is transformed by Jim's upbeat demeanor. They meet a caring, generous man called Frankie and his obedient, timid daughter Hannah, who had survived against all odds because they have one another. The four then decided to go near Manchester, where a cure has apparently been found . . .

I agree with many of the reviewers: this is not really a horror film. It's a tragic, deeply moving film with great innovations for the zombie genre. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars 28 Days Later.......2007-07-04

This is a great movie. But you can't take it as how they advertise it, as a horror film. It isn't scary, although there are a few scary scenes. 28 Days Later isn't just another zombie movie in many ways. For one thing, there aren't zombies. Zombies are the living dead, the monsters in 28 Days are living humans, infected with a virus. This means they can die any way a human would, making a more believable story. On a whole, the movie is more of a mystery than a horror film. Throughout the story your trying to find out more about the virus. In the beginning you see how it is released but you don't know that much about it or how it spread. And besides the question of what the virus is there's how far it has spread. The film takes place in England, and is thus isolated from the rest of the world leaving the question of whether or not the rest of the world has been ravaged. The acting is great as well, while the story revolves around the main characters fight for survival their emotions and relationships are clear. This movie is much more believable than movies like Day of the Dead or Resident Evil, and in my opinion much better as well.

Packed with nearly six hours of historical material, The Last Days of the Civil War provides a fascinating study of a nation in the painful throes of transition. The five History Channel programs compiled here effectively combine to form a multifaceted account of the pivotal events of 1864-65, when the bloodshed of civil war slowly brought forth a government (in the words of President Abraham Lincoln) "of the people by the people for the people," that would define the United States as it progressed toward the 20th century. The cornerstone of this two-disc set is "April 1865: The Month That Changed America," which thoroughly examines the most tumultuous month in U.S. history, encompassing Gen. Robert E. Lee's ill-fated campaigns including carnage at Sailor's Creek and eventual retreat from Richmond, Virginia, and Confederate surrender to Gen. U.S. Grant at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. Add the brutal efficiency of Sherman's March, Booth's plot to assassinate Lincoln, and administrative mistakes that put Lee at a strategic disadvantage, and you begin to see (with input from authoritative scholars, authors, and historians) how Union victory was purely a matter of circumstance.

While the factual details and expert interviews grow somewhat redundant (as does the repeated use of archival photos and documents), the sheer accumulation of historical detail makes this set a perfect complement to Ken Burns's epic documentary The Civil War, which clearly influenced these programs. "The Tragedy at Cold Harbor" examines the war's lesser-known catastrophic battle, while biographical portraits of Lincoln, Lee, and Confederate president Jefferson Davis reflect major events through the lives of the war's most influential leaders, north and south. Geared toward viewers with a basic awareness of Civil War history, these programs depict the inevitable chaos of an erratic war, unleashed in a country that needed to rip itself apart before it could reunite to forge a new and brighter future. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars April, 1865........2005-05-19

I bought this DVD in 2003 and decided to view it again the other night, finding it just as entrancing now as then.

The 2-disc set is divided into two parts, with the first disc being largely based on Jay Winik's spectacular bestselling book, APRIL, 1865; the program includes several notable writers and educators, such as William Davis, James Robertson, and Brian Pohanka among others of the Civil War on hand to give comments. Further, this first disc is broken down into April 1865: The Month That Saved America, and Civil War Combat: The Tragedy At Cold Harbor.

The second disc comes from A&E network prior to the History Channel going on the air; the disc has a biography of Abraham Lincoln, and General Robert E. Lee, with a Civil War Journal biography of Jefferson Davis. A final added feature is a copy on two screens of the Gettysburg Address.

My wife and I bought this at one of the Virginia battlefield sites in 2003 prior to returning home after visiting the old and new Cold Harbor battlefields near Richmond, and Appomattox Court House. We both enjoyed viewing these discs again and again; enjoying all of Virginia so much, that we moved from Ohio in 2006, and are now living in Virginia!

If you are interested in the 1864-1865 Lee-Grant Overland Campaigns in Virginia, or the end of the war from Richmond to Amelia Court House to Sayler's Creek and finally Appomattox Court House, these discs will bring you untold enjoyment.

The Last Days of World War II is actually three separate and outstanding History Channel documentaries about the horrifying, surreal violence that marked the decisive months of the war in Europe. The first film begins with Hitler's declaration that the Third Reich would last 1,000 years, yet by 1945 Germany was losing on every major battlefront. Still, tens of thousands of civilian and military lives would be lost before fighting ceased: in the Battle of the Bulge, pitting 600,000 Allied troops against a Nazi surge in Belgium; in Dresden, where Allied bombers spent days fire-bombing women and children; in the subway tunnels of Berlin, where refugees were drowned when a paranoid, sleepless Hitler ordered them flooded to stave off Russian soldiers. Plentiful interviews with former officers on all sides of the war, commentary by historians, and remarkable footage of battles, concentration camps, and the Nuremberg trials make this a compelling narrative rich with enlightening details.

A second disc includes a superb piece about the destruction of a U.S. Navy submarine-chaser off the coast of Maine, and a strategic cover-up that denied, for more than 60 years, that the ship was torpedoed by a German U-Boat. Finally, the story of the German-Japanese alliance, and the role of a geography professor named Karl Haushofer (who coined the phrase "geopolitics") in a number of key wartime events, make a fascinating subject for the final production. --Tom Keogh

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre adaptation of O'Donnell's book.......2007-04-28

Based on James O'Donnell's "The Bunker", this movie attempts to recreate the last days of Hitler. On the positive side, the sets are excellent and the movie covers most of the major events that took place, although not always in the correct order. On the negative side, Anthony Hopkins' performance is decidedly two-note: either apoplectic or catatonic. He did not accurately portray the charismatic man who was able to charm, inspire and hypnotize his followers until the very last. Hopkins either screams or stares blankly into space. Also, the movie gives us a Goebbels who sounds like he's straight off the boat from Brooklyn, a Goering who reminded me of Colonel Klink and a Col. Von Below who minces about like he just stepped out of La Cage aux Folles. Who knew that the Nazi hierarchy was so gay friendly?! Speer is over-romanticized and there are several scenes which I don't recall from history, such as Goebbels' dinner party in the Chancellery. This movie just didn't do it for me. It seemed like this movie was so intent on covering all the bases that it forgot to be dramatic. Its impression is more of a Bunker highlight film than a story employing dramatic tension and buildup to achieve climax and resolution. Still, any attempt at dramatizing the Bunker days is worth viewing.

    4 out of 5 stars The Bunker.......2007-03-28

Anthony Hopkins is a fine actor who puts in another good performance. The movie itself is what it is a 1980's TV drama about insane people in an insane regime, who started a world war, then destroyed themselves in the end

4 out of 5 stars Beware the DVD Soundtrack.......2006-06-19

I have to give the dvd version of the Bunker only 4 stars, since someone, for some reason, has changed the movie's soundtrack from the original. To hear the original score, which adds a great deal to the overall feeling of the film, you will have to secure the vhs version.

As for who captures the "real" Hitler better, some like Guinness, some Hopkins, and some Bruno Ganz, who is remarkable in Downfall. I think they all manage to capture something of a person who was something of a stranger to even those closest to him.

Plus, Downfall is a German-made film, and it's interesting to see Hitler through the eyes of a subsequent generation of Germans. Compare Ganz's role in Downfall with his excellent performance in Wings of Desire. Just for fun.

4 out of 5 stars Anthony Hopkins sets the standard.......2005-03-28

'The Bunker' is one of three films that deal with Hitler's final days as the Soviets encircle Berlin and put an end to the Third Reich in April/May 1945.

'The Bunker' is both one of the best and one of the worst of the three (the others being 1973's 'Hitler: the last ten days' and 2005's 'Downfall') at the same time. The triumph of 'The Bunker' is Anthony Hopkins tour de force performance as Hitler, at times so exact it is as if you are watching a newsreel. The element that makes the film almost painful to watch is that almost a 1/3 of it is dedicated to the whitewashing of convicted Nazi war criminal Albert Speer.

One thing that makes 'The Bunker' different from the others is the occasional use of flashbacks, and although brief they do allow Hopkins to portray Hitler in different venues and in a relaxed mode, casually chating and enjoying the company of friends when times were fat. In the bunker itself Hopkins turns Hitler purple in a full throttle rage as he yells about the need to destroy "the scourge and pestilence of Jewish Marxism!"

'Hitler: the last ten days' does a bit better than the rest in portraying the supporting cast of characters in the drama but one stands out in 'The Bunker' and that is Michael Lonsdale as Martin Borman, Hitler's personal secretary and gatekeeper, a man of considerable power who plays his cards close to the vest and is always scheming to stay one step ahead of his rivals. Despite its flaws 'The Bunker' earns a high rating as the Hopkins performance simply cannot be missed.

4 out of 5 stars Hopkins is a Weaker Hitler.......2003-07-18

This version of Hitler's last days begs comparison with the earlier production with Alec Guinness. Hopkin's Hitler comes across as weaker, less strong, but it is a careful study nonetheless. The production is top quality, although the supporting cast is a bit weak. The actor who plays Goebbels over does it a bit, while Speer is given a more sympathetic portrait than he deserves. The perspective of this movie is larger, as it covers the entire three month period of Hitler's life in the Bunker. At times a little slow, the movie is less dramatic than its earlier counter part with Guinness, but it is a worthwhile version anyway. Hopkin's Hilter starts to grow on you after a while, while his performance lacks the force of Guinness it is still a careful study of a dictator/madman in steady decline. Buy both versions of Hitler with Guinness and Hopkins and you will have a fascinating study of one of the world's most infamous leaders of the 20th Century.

Gus Van Sant's Last Days is a film about the death of Kurt Cobain. While the name of the main character has been changed from Kurt to Blake and the setting of the suicide changed from a greenhouse in Seattle to a greenhouse in upstate New York, there's no mistaking this film is the product of Van Sant's imagination pursuing the final, lonely moments of the great '90s icon. Rock biopic fans seeking a traditionally gratifying plot should run as fast as they can from this movie and see Rock Star or Sid and Nancy instead; Gus Van Sant's methodology is all about the slow, oppressive creep of time. One shot lingers excruciatingly long on some random foliage outside Blake's (Michael Pitt, The Dreamers) mansion. In another, he makes cereal. Then he sits on a bench for awhile. Or mumbles dialogue to a Yellow Pages ad salesman played by a real-life Yellow Pages ad salesman. Or gradually collapses while watching a Boyz 2 Men video. Meanwhile, Blake's parasitical hangers-on are slightly more animated, occupying his chilly house and clearly on their way to becoming as existentially destitute as he. Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon appears, pretty much reprising an interventionist role she must have played with the real-life Cobain, but this rock star is far beyond rescuing from the brink. Later, when Blake ventures into town to see a punk show, he is cornered by an acquaintance played by Harmony Korine, who tells him a hilarious story about playing Dungeons and Dragons with Jerry Garcia. Where the accumulation of small moments like these don't add up to much drama, they create a pervading sense of dread and sad inevitability. In his life, Cobain railed against all that was phony and hyped; by crafting a visual poem resolutely defiant of rock star spectacle, Van Sant honors the late singer as sincerely as he can, by keeping it real. --Ryan Boudinot

    Description

An official selection in the 2005 Cannes Film festival, GUS VAN SANT'S LAST DAYS is inspired by the final hours of Kurt Cobain. The film introduces us to Blake (Michael Pitt, The Dreamers), a brilliant, but troubled musician. Success has left him in a lonely place, where livelihoods rest on his shoulders and old friends regularly tap him for money and favors. The film follows Blake through a handful of hours spent in and near his wooded home... a fugitive from his own life.

    3 out of 5 stars Last Days.......2007-07-05

Watching this movie took me back to "my days". The days that I admired Kurt and everything that he stood for. Watching Last Days sort of gave me the chills becuase it was as if I was watching Kurt "act". It saddened me as well for some reason, maybe because the reality is that Kurt really is gone and true fans will have never known his true potential.

1 out of 5 stars Oh please for the love of God make it stop.......2007-07-02

I liked Elephant: A Film By Gus Van Sant. I did. I loved the way the dialogue wasn't so much dialogue but chatter. I loved the way he captured the solitude of these characters even with a voyeuristic looking in method. I loved the way he captured the subtleties of these people just going about their routine boring lives until the shooters came and shattered that. It was one of the scariest and most disturbing movies I've seen in a long time.

Yet as Peter Jackson proved, a director can use the same methods and be effective in one movie and terrible in another. This is Gus Van Sant at his most minimalist as his version of Kurt Cobain walks around mumbling, sometimes screaming. Sometimes he listens to a boring salesman. At other times his boring friends come over. He watches a Boys II Men video - in toto. And then he mumbles some more. Mumble. Mumble. Look around. Mumble. Wear a dress. Mumble.

This would have been an interesting 10 minute film, but instead it drags along for too many minutes - and with each passing minute you feel yourself dying just a little more.

Apparently Van Sant and Courtney Love are friends. If so, this must have been his Valentine gift to her, as this movie ends with the audience giving a collective sigh of appreciation to the person that killed the boring horrible creature that was Kurt Cobain or Kurt Cobain's double. Sure, Kurt was probably much more charismatic and charming in real life than the creature portrayed in this movie; but that's not saying much. A stool sample is more charming and charismatic than the Kurt Cobain portrayed in this movie.

    2 out of 5 stars Dreary.......2007-05-16

Gus Van Sant is a difficult and unpredictable director. He can pull off a quirky dramatic masterpiece like "My Own Private Idaho", or a hilarious, deranged satire like "Die To For" with equal aplomb. With "Elephant", he created an ingeniously naturalistic style that made the Columbine-like climax to the film even more powerful. Sadly, that same naturalistic style does not work nearly as well in "Last Days". By depicting a series of tedious, excruciating moments leading up to the suicide of rock star "Blake" (Kurt Cobain), the film does do a good job of showing the mental state of someone who has clearly given up on life and detached themselves from their surroundings. However, it's not particularly engrossing for the viewer to watch. Michael Pitt inhabits the character beautifully, with his sad eyes, mumbling speech, and defiant laziness. It's just that he never really gets the chance to do much that's interesting, other than wear a woman's nightgown or a pair of spacey sunglasses. The most beautiful scene in the film is when Blake's ghost slips out of his corpse and climbs an invisible ladder into the next life. It gives both the character and the audience an opportunity to escape from his dreary, lonely world.

5 out of 5 stars A truly misunderstood character study........2007-05-15

The film is not about the last days of Kurt Cobain, an observation that most film-goers, particularly Kurt Cobain fanboys (some of which, have only heard "Smells Like Teen Spirit", and the "Nevermind" album about a thousand times, and claim him to be their savior, or whatever), seem to get stuck in their thought process, as they begin to read about and/or view this film. In the end, they feel like the film disappointed them, and that their hero's image was distorted and somehow "ruined" by this film.

The film itself is actually a rather excellent and unique character study about a rock star junkie named Blake, who's going through the motions, experiencing the SAME mental and social isolation feelings that Cobain MAY HAVE experienced during his final days. Yes, Gus was obviously influenced to make this film by the whole Kurt Cobain phenomenon. Yes, Gus, you, and I know that it's obviously based on Kurt Cobain, and while the Blake character may resemble him in several aspects, in the end, he IS not Kurt at all.

We can barely comprehend what the protagonist is saying throughout the whole film, and the film itself is rather silent, with minimal dialogue and action to hold most viewers' attention. I take it that Blake's mumbling depicts just how seperated he is from reality in the film, as he can barely make out his own thoughts and words in the film. He's just drifting around his house and friends, not knowing where to go, what to do, or how to help himself dig a hole to the surface, to escape from his own hell.

I love how Blake's perspective is shown in third person viewing. The cinematography allows us to truly experience his isolation, from his perspective, while we're able to watch him experience it first hand. So, essentially, we are experiencing his "Last Days" from two point of views. The cinematography in the "Death" trilogy is truly amazing.

The most haunting aspect of the film was Blake's friends.

They kept him around, just so they could pry money and shelter off of him. They were merely acquaintances to him now, and in some scenes, they show how much they can care less about Blake's situation. For example *SPOILERS*, the scene where Blake falls while watching the Boys II Men video. Asia finds him, but doesn't even notify the others of his condition. She just props him up against the wall, and leaves him where he is, and goes about her day.

The way the characters are just capable of extracting anything they please out of the lead character while he's going through withdrawal from reality and himself is disturbing to me.

I should point out, and know for sure, that not everyone will find this film watchable, or even tolerable. The film definitely will not cater entertainment to a mainstream audience. I figured that "Elephant" was Van Sant's best after I saw this film for the first time, but now, I'm starting to think that "Last Days" may just be the masterpiece of his "Death" trilogy, and is certainly one of his best films to date.

    4 out of 5 stars classy.......2007-05-14

Very artsy. If you've seen other gus vant sants movies such as "elephant" and enjoyed it than you would probably enjoy this as well. Also if you have a thing for all things kurt cobain you might enjoy this film. If you want to stare at the TV and laugh mindlessly at fart jokes don't watch this movie or your brain will most likely explode.

5 out of 5 stars Trying to Escape Fate! .......2007-06-15

Director Carlo Lizzani is a veteran Italian film maker formed in the Italian "Neorealist" film school; this influence is still perceptible in the present movie.
Lizzani in his extended career has delivered some very good films as "Chronache di Poveri Amanti" ("Chronicle of Poor Lovers" 1954) and "Il Procceso de Verona" (The Verona Trial 1963) amongst other.

"Mussolini: Ultimo Atto" (Mussolini: Last Act 1974) show dictator's four last days of life. The film shows Mussolini as he was: arrogant, selfish, histrionic, liar, opportunist, unremorseful, irresponsible ... yet human.
Around him a plethora of flunky officers strive to attract his favors. His faithful lover, Claretta Petacci, still clings to "the big man" with desperate love.
Germans, Allies, Partisans, Vatican and Neutrals compose an intricate political and diplomatic ballet around this sinking figure.

Photography in charge of veteran Roberto Gerardi and music score composed by Ennio Morricone are excellent.
Rod Steiger is outstanding in his characterization of the Italian dictator, his attitudes and corporal demeanor is exact; yet the best of his playacting is the way in which he conveys to the audience the internal turmoil of Mussolini.
Lisa Gastoni as Claretta, Henry Fonda as Cardinale Schuster and Franco Nero as Colonel Valerio offer great performances too.

A very good historical film that will be thoroughly enjoyed by history fans and general public too.

This film is not worth the shipping and handling. George C. Scott gives a fabulous performance of a simply miserable script. The production values rival a poor film school project. The supplementary characters are obtuse and poorly developed; Patton's wife is both whiny and soporific. If you're a fan of the original, then you'll hate this. If you crave a "Lifetime Original," then I suggest this movie.

I can't say I actually watched this movie. I bought it as a present for my Dad for Christmas this year. He was featured as an extra in the movie. At the time, he was stationed at RAF Mildenhall, UK in the U.S. Air Force. I was just a baby when this film was shot, so it was nice to find the part where he was featured, pause it, and look in awe that he was actually on screen!

2 out of 5 stars The Last Days of Patton.......2007-01-09

I found this movie very disappointing. I guess after Patton anything else would be hard to compare. That said, I had high hopes given the fact that I enjoyed the original so much. I did not even get half way through it before becoming bored with the plot. Stick with the original, you will not be sorry.

3 out of 5 stars Patton lucky to have George C. Scott play him!.......2006-12-11

Interesting sequel to the movie Patton, but this is not a war film, it is a drama. Patton wrestles with how to handle post-war Bavaria: Should he exclude Nazis from the new government, or should he include them to speed rebuilding? Should he allow SS members to continue to train in the prison camps? He clashes with Ike, and frets over not having men to lead in battle.

Life after the German surrender was nothing but worsening problems for the general, what with his chafing at running a bureaucracy, his stripping of authority by Ike, and finally on the day before he was to ship home, getting into a freak accident that broke his neck and paralyzed him.

I'm not sure some of the critics of this film appreciate how well Scott does with a tremendous challenge of depicting a physically dead man from the neck down, a man who once moved armies in one of the most important times in modern history, now bedridden and suspecting he faces death despite his doctors' forced cheer. It is touching to see his wife scramble to his side to comfort him and read him books, and disconcerting to know that her niece appears to be having an illicit affair with her own uncle-by-marriage.

This is a dark film, as it watches Patton's wife struggle with her husband's rather brave acceptance that he is transitioning towards death, and find bravery within herself as well.

Finally, as my husband observes, the best thing that happened to Patton was having George C. Scott play him on film -- talk about a posthumous career boost!

3 out of 5 stars This release-- very poor transfer to DVD.......2006-08-17

Just popped this DVD in, and I'm sure I'll enjoy it as I love Patton's history and from what I can see right now, Goerge C. Scott is in the same form he was for the major theater predecessor.

This release from Brentwood is indeed a very poor transfer as other reviewers mentioned before me. I notice there is what appears to be a more recent release for a slightly higher price-- perhaps it is better.

In this case, at $3.99 I'm not going to complain.

The true story of the legendary American outlaws. From 1866 to 1882, Missouri's Frank and Jesse James led a gang that robbed banks, held up trains and became the most famous outlaws in American history. After 15 years of thievery, the legendary outlaws are trying to settle down. This is the last years of the brothers' lives, revealing Frank (Johnny Cash) as a book-loving and family-oriented man and brother Jesse (Kris Kristofferson) as a money-hungry womanizer.

We thought the movie very good. Kept every ones attention. It was writen well.It is one of those movies that we will watch alot.We really like the cast that is in the movie. It was put togeater well. And is a ok movie for kids to watch.

3 out of 5 stars Even by TV movie standards this is pretty bad.......2006-03-11

As much as you might want to renew your affection for Johny Cash in the wake of Walk the Line, steer clear of this movie. It will bring you up right quick on the limitations of Cash, Kristofferson and country music. Kristofferson can act but Cash is essentially playing himself as the family man with a guilt-ridden past. Sadly it's Cash that has to carry the movie.

The James gang was a nasty brutal bunch of murderers, and beyond one killing motivated by revenge, you really don't get the brutality. It's all the myth of Jesse James. He's a good ol' boy that just didn't like losing the Civil War. He's also dead shortly after the halfway mark of the movie.

The rest of the movie is about Frank James (Johny Cash) standing trial (he's acquitted - but Willie Nelson gets to testify on his behalf) and wondering if he should go after the man that killed his brother. Another actor (like Clint Eastwood) would have given a nuanced performance of the tensions between wanting revenge and knowing that the dead pretty much had it coming. Cash is just Cash.

Buy only if you are a diehard fan of Cash (he only sings on the credits) or really really curious, but be prepared to be disappointed.

    5 out of 5 stars great.......2005-05-09

This one should please Frank and Jesse James buffs who have longed to see a movie with various elements of James history and folklore that have been ignored in other films. Frank was a Southern Christian gentleman and student of the Bard and also a thief and killer. Cash does a fine job capturing his contradictions. Johnny, who can convey intelligence, heart, spirtuality and just as believably sing about killing a man just to watch him die, is brilliant here. Kristofferson is also superb as Jesse. Just as impressive are June Carter Cash, Willie Nelson, and David Allan Coe. Sadly Willie's part is only a cameo, but it's pure gold. A fine movie that is sure to entertain fans of the cast, folks who love a good Western, and Frank & Jesse James enthusiasts.

5 out of 5 stars The Last Days of Frank & Jesse James.......2005-03-20

Outstanding entertainment! One would think with all the musicians who star and have a part in this production, there would be some show of their tallent, but Johnny Cash, as Frank James actually struggles through "The Old Wooden Cross" as if he can't carry a tune in a bucket! Now that was precious.

4 out of 5 stars the legend never dies.......2004-03-01

Footnotes from the lives and legends of Frank and Jesse James that are often left out of other James movies are featured in this one. It's a charming TV movie that seems to be as close to the truth as legends can ever be. In other words, it takes a slightly more realistic approach to the legend, but still comes across like a whopping yarn your Southern grampa would tell you. I liked that. Don't expect too much action, but get ready to be charmed. Have a beer, settle back, and enjoy.
