    Description

A searing drama of natural disaster and sheer bravery, FIRESTORM: LAST STAND AT YELLOWSTONE tracks a crack team of firefighters as they battle massive flames threatening to eviscerate Yellowstone National Park--and trap the thousands of tourists who have come to visit America's national treasure on summer vacation. Based on a true story, this A&E Network Original Movie, starring Scott Foley (Felicity) and Richard Burgi (Desperate Housewives), is the life-or-death story of firefighter Clay Harding (Foley) who has spent his life studying fires--how they move, breathe, grow--and most importantly, how to put them out. When throngs of tourists enter the park for the 4th of July weekend, Clay's worst fears come true: a massive fire grows out of control, scorching everything in its path. Faced with this deadly crisis, Clay and his team devise a radical plan to save everyone--and what is left of the park. As they race against time, can they harness the flames in time to save thousands of lives?

5 out of 5 stars HIGH PRAISE TO OUR FIRE-FIGHTERS AND ALL THE PEOPLE WHO RISK THEIR LIVES.......2007-06-07

Almost very educational - Yellowstone - Firefighters, their lives and dangers.
I must admit that I bought it because of Scott Foley from [The Unit] but the movie was well worth it.
The dangers are always real just never brought to our attention of all the dangers and risks that these men and women face when the blaze starts to take out millions of acre's of trees and park-lands.

I sure hope that the far shots of the blazes were not real - the up-close shots were too real. It reminds me that we must remember these people in our prayers. And hope that the government agencies are not as stupid and money-grubbing as they sound. [Probably a forlorn hope.]

This movie is Definitely recommended for the more mature audience - and not for some twitchy kid that thinks starting a fire is a lark.

5 out of 5 stars Last Stand at Yellowstone.......2007-05-20

This is an excellent story. Richard Burgi and Scott Foley do a great job in telling of the forest fire fighters and their families. I enjoyed the extras of how Yellowstone was formed as well.

I've been photographing for a long time, and have perhaps become a bit smug about certain subject matter. Take waterfalls, for example. "I know how to photograph those!" Well, I don't. The tips in this DVD proved that.

There are many other great tips in this DVD, meaning I'll need to watch it several times to take them all in.

I recommend this DVD to anyone considering a photo trip to Yellowstone National Park, even for advanced photographers. Aside from the fine content, this DVD is professionally produced. In fact, the tips presented have broad applicability beyond Yellowstone. You won't be sorry buying this one.

I wasn't a fan of Unwritten Law. In fact I hadn't heard of them. I saw the show on VH1, loved the music, then got the disc. I like the simplicity of the music against the backdrop of Yellowstone. I was surprised to learn they are a punk band after seeing the show. I plan on taking a trip west to Yellowstone as soon as I save up some cashola. I'll probably get another cd of Unwritten Law in the meantime.

2 out of 5 stars Could have been Sooooo much better..........2005-09-10

I just got this DVD and have seen it twice. It is apparent that there was not a lot of thought put into this composition. The first 5 minutes were a real turn-off, which included a couple of time-lapsed scenes and reindeer wading to the tune of Greensleeves, followed by Bison grazing, not a congenial marriage of music and imagery. Then there was a reindeer jousting with a nearby tree. Not a great opening and I don't know too much Classical music that was ever inspired by Nature. I thought I recognized excerpts from The Theme from Exodus.

I would have chosen some Authentic Native American Music since it is spiritual in nature and inspired by nature. The scenes that had no music were the best and it would have been better if they had actually made the entire video with natural sound. Nature doesn't really need any help from us in enhancing her beauty. My first impression was that I had made a mistake and wasted $20. I've never been to Yellowstone National Park and I'm thinking there has to be more to it than what was shown here, although many of the scenes were spectacular, particularly the snow scenes.

I guess the purpose of the presentation, whether it be for relaxation or to just give the viewer an idea of what the park is like, makes a difference. If you are looking for something to really relax to, I don't think you would be happy with this DVD, as I had to keep the volume down, except during the parts that were natural sound. If you are looking for something with narration, that tells you about the park, I'd suggest something else like the one done by PBS.

I personally think this DVD is over-priced.

4 out of 5 stars Could be better .......2004-08-15

I have seen a better video about Yellow Stone, which tells a well organized story of an otter family. It goes from one spot to another, from spring to winter. The scenery is awesome, music soothing, and the dialogue interesting and informative. I would have given 5 stars if I haven't seen the better one.

5 out of 5 stars Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Park on one DVD.......2002-04-05

There is no diologue on this dvd only natural sounds and music. So if your looking for narration this is not the dvd for you, but if you want to relax, watch, listen, remember or just see what it looks like this is the one to get. I must say this was all I expected of the video, however, my expectations were exceeded. To hear the elk call, the geysers blow, the mountain scenes, the rivers matched perfectly with soothing music. The production of this DVD is top notch and well thought out and gives a good overall view of Yellowstone as well as Grand Teton National Park. For those that have been to the Yellowstone National Park and or Grand Teton National Park get ready for a mental trip when you walked Americas Oldest National Park. Those that have not been you will want to go when this is over so pack your bags, thats how good this DVD on Yellowstone is in my opinion. All thats needed of this video are the different scents that make Yellowstone, Yellowstone...

      Description

High in the wild heart of the American Rockies, Yellowstone is a place of extraordinary landscapes and geysers. Created by the largest volcanic explosions in the planet's history -- the Earth's greatest thermal spectacle -- it became the world's first national park. Now that the wolves have been returned, it has become a world-class wildlife sanctuary -- the best place to see wolves and grizzly bears chasing elk.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not for children or sensitive viewers.......2007-07-04

This program is not an overview of Yellowstone; rather, it is a brutally honest examination of the predator-prey relationships among the park's wildlife. The numerous hunt scenes are neither sensationalized nor censored. Sensitive viewers should be prepared to see cute baby animals killed. The theme is the dichotomy of nature's beauty vs. the animals' constant struggle to survive.

If the subject matter does not put you off, then I recommend the program. The cinematography is beautiful, and the narration is interesting. Proponents of wolf conservation will be particularly interested in this documentary because wolves are featured throughout.

No special features, language selection, or subtitles are included. I have given the DVD 3 stars (neutral) to reflect my suspicion that most viewers will either love it or hate it.

5 out of 5 stars Naturalist Paul Schullery Provides Excellent Narrative.......2006-11-15

If you are searching for a "tour guide" video of Yellowstone National Park, this is not the one. This documentary, however, is excellent at what is does, which is to present our first national park as a present-day crucible for understanding the delicate balance and inherent beauty in a large ecosystem. This is a good documentary with lucid perception.

      1 out of 5 stars Edens - Not.......2006-07-04

I was very disappointed with the content of this DVD. I wanted to give this to friends as an introduction to Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone is a geologic wonder but the DVD never touches on the those incredible and varied aspects of the park. It never gets past the animal food chains reflected in the park so most of the DVD is devoted to one species devouring another. This is a DVD that parents will want to review before letting young children see it.

      Product Description

Amidst the stunning wilderness of Yellowstone National Park, steam and hot water bubble and hiss from thousands of colorful, mineral-encrusted springs and vents. These hot springs, geysers and bubbling mud pools are all outward manifestations of a huge body of magma residing not far beneath the surface. It's a subterranean sea of molten lava that scientists are sure will burst through the Earth's crust it's just a question of when. And if the resulting super-volcanic eruption is anything like the last one on earth which plunged the world into darkness for six years, tipped us into the last Ice Age and reduced the human population to just 2,000 people we're in for one explosive ride. Based on the predictions of top volcano experts and the detailed planning and evacuation strategies of government agencies, this sobering, factual drama shapes possible events into a compelling human experience. Watch as state-of-the-art computer graphics integrated with mock-factual sources reveal the horrifyingly realistic build-up to the Yellowstone eruption and the climax itself. Learn what effects the eruption may have across the globe environmentally, politically, economically and socially as the massive ash cloud drifts into the upper atmosphere. And glimpse the fragmented world that such a cataclysmic geological event would surely leave behind.

5 out of 5 stars True reality TV.......2007-04-23

A brilliant and well-researched dramatization of what could happen if the volcano that sits beneath Yellowstone should erupt. I recommend it strongly to my colleagues who teach college-level geology. I doubt, though, that the vendors at Yellowstone want to have it in their shops; it's that scary.

      1 out of 5 stars Gimmee a break.......2007-01-29

There are so many problems with this BBC docu-drama, one doesn't know where to begin. The movie is all about the volcano in Yellowstone that erupts every 600-700 thousands years. Since it last erupted 640,000 years ago, it assumed to be way overdue - at least by BBC. It was obviously made for the volcano-less British viewers to make them feel really good that they don't live in the U.S. and then undoubtedly just given to the Discovery Channel. What is amazing is that, with all of the movie's problems, the movie's consultant was the former USGS scientist-in-charge for the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory.

The movie's hero, presumably the director of USGS Volcanic Hazards located in Menlo Park, California, knows everything there is to know about volcanoes. Somehow, a reporter reports that the volcano in Yellowstone is ready to erupt any second and sparks a panic. Our hero goes to Washington D.C. and reluctantly defuses the panic. However, the volcano erupts during his nighttime return flight to San Francisco. After the eruption, a pyroclastic flow is shown barreling across level ground as it chases a pickup. (While pyroclastic flows do flow downhill extremely fast - they seem to have a problem flowing across umpteen miles of level ground - duh). There are other problems with the eruption, but most probably fall into the picky picky classification.

On the plane our hero learns of the eruption and tells the pilot. The problem is that USGS issues not only a 4 level volcanic warning system for people living near a volcano, it also simultaneously issues a 4 level warning system for aircraft which is sent to FAA and thus to all air controllers. Apparently, the pilot of the plane not only has his radio turned off, but also does not believe that the eruption poses any danger to the plane nor does he (or his radar) see the ash cloud. Fortunately, a cargo door on the plane somehow falls off and sulfur dioxide fills the plane. That's the first warning to the pilot that something might possibly be amiss. Then the plane hits the ash cloud and loses its engines but recovers and, for some very strange reason, gets diverted to Laramie, Wyoming. A daylight shot of a different (disabled) plane sitting on its tail is then shown.

The next scene (still nighttime) shows our USGS hero sitting in a car with light ash falling. He wants to go to Denver, but traffic is not moving. One would guess that cars would have the same problem as aircraft when it comes to volcanic ash. Frustrated by not moving, he googles on his laptop to find the nearest military base (the map shows Buffalo, Wyoming - 300 miles north). He gets out of the car and trudges through the suddenly very thick ashfall to the base (superimposed is "Cheyenne, Wyoming" - which is in southern Wyoming). The military base is an old NORAD basically underground base, staffed by one remaining soldier. At that point I punched the "eject" button so unfortunately I'm unable to say whether or not our USGS hero survived to be able to save the world. I assume he did.

Although the special effects are somewhat interesting and a few are very good (like the three-dimensional projection of the magma chamber), some are outright confusing or bad. Also, many, many clips that were clumsily interjected into the movie had obviously been shot in a foreign (non-U.S.) country (like ash falling on people as they walk past a disco theater that advertises "Metro Manila's Finest Disco Band"). Overall, it is not worth the $4.99 Discovery Channel now wants for the DVD. $1.99 maybe. Check your library.

5 out of 5 stars Super Portrayal of Science!.......2006-11-22

Want to get your students talking about geology? Show them this film. It's an excellent study in how geologists study volcanoes, from studies of paleodeposits to supercomputer models. It also very movingly portrays the personal and professional challeges that scientists face when trying to warn the public about an impending disaster. Cry wolf and risk losing your job and credibility. Play it safe and risk human lives. If there is such a thing as a scientific movie, this is it.

5 out of 5 stars CAUTION! - This movie will scare the HELL out of you.......2006-08-14

This is not a documentary. It is a very realistic feeling movie walking you through the expected catalclismic events leading up to and following the eruption of the super volcano under Yellowstone National Park.

I don't believe this movie will ever be telecast because it would cause such a panic. It was disturbing to watch because it was so realistically portrayed. It is a very exciting and dramatic story that may likely affect the world as we know it.

      2 out of 5 stars A DVD of a 10 year old video.......2003-03-22

I felt like I was back in sixth grade watching a film the teacher would put on when she needed time to grade papers!
The picture was weak, grainy, and the sound lacking for a DVD. The information was OK. If you want to enjoy the sounds and sights of Yellowstone in your home, spend your time and money elsewhere.
