To the delight of Star Trek fans everywhere, the stellar second season of The Next Generation (1988-89) belonged to Lieutenant Commander Data. As the Enterprise-D's resident android, Data (in the Emmy-worthy hands of Brent Spiner) would gain legal sentience in the season highlight "The Measure of a Man," and his increasingly "human" personality would refine itself in such diverse episodes as "Elementary, Dear Data" (Data as Sherlock Holmes), "The Outrageous Okona" (a misfire, but worthy from the Data perspective), and "Pen Pals." While Gates McFadden (Dr. Crusher) took a sabbatical of then-unknown duration (gracefully replaced by original Trek guest star Diana Muldaur as Dr. Pulaski), the remaining bridge crew would match Data's vitality: Riker grew a handsome beard and proved his command potential; Worf became richly nuanced in "The Icarus Factor," and met his match (and mate) in guest Suzie Plakson's fiercely Klingon sexpot K'Ehleyr; Wesley matured admirably, despite continuing fan disapproval; Betazed culture emerged as Troi locked horns with her eccentric mother, Lwaxana (Majel Barrett, in a recurring role); and La Forge made good on his promotion to chief engineer while Chief O'Brien (Colm Meaney) flawlessly rode on Geordi's coattails.

In a crucial series development, Guinan (special guest Whoopi Goldberg) revealed a connection to Q in her helpful capacity as Ten-Forward's enigmatic host, while Q himself (John DeLancie) precipitated the Enterprise's first, fateful encounter with the Borg (in the suspenseful "Q Who?"). Through it all, Patrick Stewart brilliantly intensified all of Picard's renaissance qualities (especially in the dazzling "Time Squared"), exploring the captain's facets with equal measures of curiosity, fascination, amusement, courage, and philosophical insight. Despite its lame finale with the money-saving clip-show "Shades of Gray," season 2 charted a warp-nine course to the even better season 3. --Jeff Shannon

Perfect Gift.......2007-06-12

I bought this as a birthday gift for my husband. It the was perfect gift for a Star Trek TNG fan. He can barely contain himself from watching the whole season straight through.

Worth the watch........2007-05-23

I have been a Trekkie most of my life, but I had to say that I was somewhat disappointed with the first TNG season. It seemed too slow, almost tedious at times. It almost suprises me that there was a second season, but I'm glad that there was. The second season is a definate improvement. I have nothing against Dr. Crusher, but I do like Dr. Pulaski much better. Another thing in its favour is the character developments in the second season. I like getting to know the characters better and seeing what they do with their lives, rather than just the wonders the ship has to offer. Probably the best episodes in this season, in my humble opinion, were Manhunt, Elementary, Dear Data, The Child, and Up the Long Ladder. Definately worth the watch.

Buy it for Dr. Pulaski!.......2007-04-08

Although later seasons had more really good episodes and saw more development in the core characters, this season is worth buying just for the stellar performance of Diana Muldaur as Dr. Pulaski. We never liked the character of Dr. Crusher, who was weak at best, and were greatly disappointed when she returned to replace the far superior Dr. Pulaski. My families' favorite episodes were the one with Lor, Data's brother, and the one where Pulaski operates on Captain Picard, which did a great deal to develop the characters of Picard and Wesley Crusher as well as the good doctor. We give it 4 stars for Diana Muldaur's sake.

If you love Star Trek then you like this and anything else StarTrek ,except the movie Insurrection which is the only thing Star Trek that SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One-Ups Season One.......2007-03-08

Season 2 of ST:TNG is a definite improvement over Season 1, despite Gates McFaddin being on sabbatical and the writer's strike of the time. Diana Muldaur spiced things up as the hard-edged Dr. Pulaski, and Whoopi Goldberg slipped in nicely as the charismatic Guinan. Some of the episodes leave a lot to be desired, but there is plenty here that makes up for it.

An entertaining, but so-so documentary.......2007-06-26

I am not a fan of Star Trek, nor have I watched any of the movies or many episodes of any of the series; I'm not even sure how many there are. I am familiar with many of the characters, the actors who portray them on TV and in the movies, and, largely thanks to Futurama, I have some knowledge of the world of Trekkies. This is a film documenting Trekkie culture and life.

I locate Star Trek fandom and subculture alongside Stars Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and those who participate in anime "cosplay" (a term formed by slamming together "costume" and roleplay"). Trekkies tend to entrench their lives within the context of the Star Trek narrative, merging their reality with Gene Roddenberry's fantasies. For some, it's as simple as wearing Star Trek uniforms outside of convention settings, forming groups, holding meetings, and speaking with the terminology and languages borrowed from the series and movies. For others, it's hard to tell where Star Trek ends and real life begins.

James Doohan (Scotty) is by far the most endearing of the cast who appear in this documentary. His recounting of a life-changing event with a fan is particularly moving. Leonard Nimoy is both amused by Trekkies and grateful for the success that the show has afforded him. Patrick Stewart doesn't appear in the film at all, not even in archival footage. Cast member responses to Star Trek are as varied as fan responses.

I have a feeling that the film is not altogether unbiased. There are moments when fans make self-criticizing statements, seemingly without a hint of irony. There are some suspicious editing techniques as well. I don't think the film explicitly mocks Trekkies, but it does suggest that all Trekkies exhibit extreme and strange behavior. And so, yes, this is a documentary about Trekkies, but it's not about the millions of Star Trek fans who watch reruns of the show in jeans and a T-shirt.

And can you blame them?

This documentary is a peek inside the universe of the Star Trek Fan (I believe they refer to themselves as "Trekkers" and not "Trekkies"), directed by Denise Crosby, who performed in the first two seasons of "Star Trek: The Next Generation."

Particularly noteworthy are the dentist and his wife whose dental office is made up like "Star Fleet Dental" (very original - if I lived in Florida, I would go there). The dentist and his dental assistant wife wear Star Fleet uniforms as they work on your mouth, and the dental office is filled with Star Trek paraphernalia. Also worthy of note is the Klingon language school, where people go to learn how to say "Ka-Plagh!" with the right intonation and spirit. They're serious about it, too. No "la plume de ma tante" stuff for these folks. I didn't see whether or not they ate live Gagh (worms), though. I wouldn't put it past them, these folks are dedicated.

God bless them all, every obsessive one. Blue-skinned and scaley-skinned and in and out of uniform. And may they all be reincarnated on the planets of their choice. Make it so.

The above is a quote from one young man who hosts a yearly "Star Trek" "bash." Funny, but not surprising.

As a casual fan of "Star Trek" (yes, we exist) and a fan of Denise Crosby (love her work in horror cinema!), I thought this documentary could be intriguing. Instead, it was strangely repellent. While former cast members were exceptionally generous with their time and patience, the so-called "Trekkers," "Trekkies" and "Spiner Femmes" were horrifically damaged (clearly, they are avoiding some trauma in their lives by enmeshing themselves in an imaginary world ... going so far as to wear phasers and tricorders to work EVERYDAY!) Most of those featured (as you guessed) are socially backward and deeply disturbed (no joke, the documentary ACTUALLY shows one man hanging-out at the local Radio Shack ... you think that's a vicious stereotype, until you see it happen!) Nonetheless, I must note that a dentist and four radio hosts were also featured ... all seemed fairly grounded (as if Star Trek enhanced their lives as opposed to destroying it) (and, it is crucial to note that "Star Trek," per se, did not ruin the lives of these folks ... if not for this show, these people would have found something else on which to irrational attach themselves).

While the interviews with fans were unsettling and grotesque, it was a genuine treat to see LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, and John de Lancie discuss their experiences (all of whom seem as warm and patient as you'd imagine). Likewise, it was quite amusing to behold Brent Spiner and Denise Crosby "tease" their fans with thinly veiled "flirtations" (all for the cameras, of course!!) Wait until you see the fan depictions of Yar and Data in flagrante delicto!! (You'll want to tear your eyes out!)

Finally, I'm not certain I can tolerate one more "Trekkie" or "Trekker" blather-on about how "Star Trek" "predicted the future of technology." While these fragile folks find this flattering to the show, what's even more flattering is the fact that many involved in technological development are fans of the program ... and have been inspired by it. Sooo, for once and for all, "Star Trek" is not the Nostradamus of technology ... it inspired our brightest minds (and, obviously, fostered some very flawed ones, as well).

If high-quality film is not a concern of yours (the film stock is not the best nor is the sound quality), if you have an interest in mental illness, or if you would like to affirm your own sanity, watch this piece. However, I must caution you, when this work ended, I liked "Star Trek" a little less. The deeply disturbed fan-base (isolated, detached from reality, admittedly suicidal, socially inept, etc...) repel the rational viewer.

You don't have to be a trekkie to enjoy this documentary featuring cast and fans of the orinal Star Trek TV series. Sweet, funny, insightful and a little strange.

... if only for the comment made by the female collector who dressed in the military fatigues. When she said she read too many Conan books as a kid, I just about lost it!

Much like the other reviewers here, I enjoyed this flick a lot. I never really got involved with any series other than TNG, and I definitely never took things as far as some of the folks in this video did. That said, I have to somewhat admire the people in this video for their dedication and flat-out courage. It honestly (I think) takes a lot of guts for these diehards to express themselves the way they do. I can only imagine they catch a lot of grief from the general public, but they stand by their convictions and dedication, and that says something. I think the world would be a much better place if we all stuck by our convictions as much as the fans in this program do. Whether that means Star Trek reaches humanity on a deeper level, I don't know. But I think on the surface, at the very least its a unifying point for many people who may not have one otherwise.

The only hangup I have is the transexual fan - she doesn't really lend any insight into the program or the phenomena of Star Trek. It seems the documentarian(s) put her in for more shock value than anything else. That, and the difference between a "Trekker" and a "Trekkie" isn't really distinguished enough for me, but I'm probably missing something.

Overall, an excellent documentary - well produced, very interesting, and very entertaining. Now where did I put my old Conan mags?

I love Star Trek in all it's various incarnations, and I have to admit...I love making fun of Trekkies (who doesn't...really?). I loved the first movie for the focus on the extreme fandom (makes me feel just a little less geeky)...but this movie is even better for the great balance. It shows the funny and bizarre side of extreme fandom, but it also shows the the human side of being Trekkies - and what happens when you're a fan in a war torn country.

While not as side-splittingly funny as the first one, it can be argued that this is a better movie because of the way it highlights the Trek fandom throughout the world. The chapter on the Trekkies from Serbia is simply heartbreaking, and makes you realize how lucky we are to have all that we have.

I knew that this movie was going to be my new favorite when it highlighted the Star Trek tribute bands (you'll love No Kill I). However, for me, the best part of this DVD, are the EXTRAS. Included are FAN MADE TREK MOVIES. Get the popcorn ready, because this will entertain you for hours on end!

If you watched the first movie for the humor (let's face it, it really was hysterical), you'll love this movie too...the extras are really priceless. However, if you wanted a little more from the first film - a more balanced view - this sequel definitely delivers.

A Softer Side.......2005-12-06

Trekkie is an insult and is akin to nerd or geek. Trekker is a more respectable term to apply to one who is a Star Trek fan. So I'm surprised that the sequel to "Trekkies", a film that took a certain amount of pleasure in debasing Star Trek fans for their obsession, didn't call their next film "Trekkers" a film that takes a little more care in their treatment of these sweet but kinda' crazy enthusiasts.

In the first film, Denise Crosby, explored the unusual relationship Star Trek fans have with the show and subsequently with the actors from the series. The result is one very funny movie that shows people not only obsessing over the realistic nature of their Star Trek costumes, but other fans who would turn their cars into shuttle crafts or their dental offices into the bridge of the Starship Enterprise. In the squeal the goals seem two fold, the filmmakers want to explore Star Trek fans around the globe and show that their obsession can also be a positive thing. The best part about this squeal however is its nod to the original movie. We catch up with some of the more memorable interviewees from the first "Trekkies". We learn that space shuttle van just disappeared one day and that it's owner, though still a huge fan, has other things on his plate...like his new wife. It's a pleasure to hear him laugh at his own fixation. Other past fans are highlighted as well and all are show in a much more positive light. The clips from Europe, Australia, South America, etc. are interesting but get a little monotonous as the film progresses. The extras actually seem a little more compelling as some clips explore the extremes a few fans go to. I also liked watching the two fan films, which are also included on the DVD. They're not very good, but the sheer joy that went into them is exhilarating.

Actually better than the first one.......2005-09-06

This documentary trumps the first one in a major way by ignoring the main Star Trek actors. We don't have the millionth interview with Uhuru telling her Martin Luther King story and we don't have to watch the cast of the original series looking sicker and sicker (Rest in Peace Bones and Scotty) but we do still have the "Star Trek=World Peace" argument, but surprisingly less noxious as the Yugoslavian Trekkies talk about Star Trek as their relief from the rampant nationalism that led to some of the worst genocides of the 1990s.

The international Trekkies are delightful. The addition of Filk music (don't ask) and fan-made movies are great. And the kid from the first movie is there, supremely embarrassed by his screen presence in the first movie but ready and willing to make more gaffs (when he's not apologizing for the first movie mistakes) but he's definitely more entertaining in the second movie sitting next to his wife and wondering how he could have been so obnoxious at 17. (We all were. We all were. Just most of us didn't have a camera crew filming us.)

Like the first one, the main strengths come from the fact that these people are funny in their own right (and most of them know that they are funny) and the director never condescends to them. There are slow parts but they don't impede the movie.

Second to last note - the erotic poetry is worth the purchase price alone. It's hilarious.

Last Note - those Star Trek theme bands rock. I'm not talking about the filk singers (eh, never my thing) but the San Diego based bands whose lyrics might be silly but they play some solid sets.

Big Disappointment...Don't Bother.......2005-06-28

After loving Trekkies I, we ordered Trekkies 2, an obviously PC response to fan backlash from the hilarious portrayal of Trek fans in Trekkies I. Trekkies 2 is a yawn...slow and boring with very few colorful fans other than updates on megafans featured in Trekkies I.

Another Heaping Helping Of Trekkies.......2005-06-01

The first "Trekkies" film managed to dig up some rather odd characters to give the average person an idea of what makes up a fan of "Star Trek" and all of its offspring. It gave us a cross-dressing dude who explains and performs a little "filk" for everyone. We were introduced to the lady in Arkansas who was made famous by attending Whitewater scandal jury duty in her Starfleet uniform and, alas, who could forget Gabriel Koerner. He was perhaps the uber-geek out of the whole bunch. The film also showed how the fans are very involved in their communities and world.

More of the same is offered up in "Trekkies 2," though this one was a little more emotional than the first. Denise Crosby bounces across the globe in search of more Trek fans. Once again we visit some pretty strange folks, but we are also shown how something as simple as "Star Trek" can have so much meaning to a group of people when Crosby goes to Serbia. Those people were so touched and amazed at how the characters in "Star Trek" lived amongst each other in relative peace even though they were pretty much all from different races, religions, etc. It was heartwarming to listen to these people talk about how their newfound freedom took on a special meaning through "Star Trek." I also noticed that out of all of people in this film, the Serbians seemed to be the least to play "dress up" as their favorite characters, holding more to the ideals of "Trek" and not so much the whiz-bangs and Klingons of it all.

There's one fellow who converts his house into a replica of the Enterprise. We get a better and perhaps more disturbing look into the world of "Filk" music and some of the bands in that genre. We also get a few nice clips featuring stars of the later "Trek" series and how many of their fans reacted to meeting them, funny letters, tattoos, etc.

The most fun part of this flick was when we get to look back on some of the more popular characters from the original film. We catch up with the guy who dresses his dog up in "Trek" costumes. We see Whitewater juror Barbara Adams interact with a group of people who question her about her motives for dressing up in a Starfleet uniform for court, and one individual gets pretty rough with her. Finally, we get to catch up with Gabriel Koerner, and learn that he is married, has steady work as a digital model builder for such shows as the new "Battlestar Galactica" and seems to have stepped back from, just a little, his love for "Trek."

In the end, if you enjoyed the original "Trekkies," you'll like this second helping. It might go overboard with a few of the fans, especially with the "Filk" singers, but we are shown that most Trekkies, Trekkers, etc. are primarily good folks with very big hearts(and many have graduate degrees).

Some folks collect baseball cards, some collect CDs, these folks just love their "Trek." Is that so wrong?

Great look at Star Trek fans.......2006-02-17

Some of the people shown in these documentaries are a little over the top. But for the most part it shows the dedication the fans have to the ideals of Star Trek and the positive impact the shows have had on people's lives. I love that Denise goes all around the world interviewing fans. Star Trek isn't just an American show. It belongs to the world.

Great for Trekkies or Trekkers.......2005-10-23

Since I'm some what of a Trekkie or Trekker, depending on your preference, I enjoyed both DVD's. I definately recommend them if watch or have watched Star Trek.

Trekkies 1 + 2.......2005-09-01

Trekkies 1 is hilarious. Trekkies have the best sense of humour . Who could imagine golf fanatics poking fun at themselves this way. And on the serious side, the amount of charity and good will that trekkies give every day is inspiring. As a trekkie for over 30 yrs, I laughed, cryed, was slighly cringing at times but overall had fun. And if you're not a trekkie, find out what it all means. It's not so scary. You'll be surprised!!

This documentary is an excellent look at the Star Trek's extreme fans, also known as Trekkies. I'm a huge Star Trek fan and I loved this movie. It is a loving and considerate tribute to the fans by giving them their own movie. I don't know where people got the idea that this was insulting or offensive because it is neither. It is a look into the world of true Trek fans. This movie doesn't judge or make fun of anyone who is interviewed.

Denise Crosby did an excellent job as the host. Like I said, this movie gives fans and non fans a like a look into the lives of Trekkies, those who live Star Trek. There is a dentist who has his entire office decorated with Star Trek paraphernalia, a radio dj who hosts a radio talk show called "Talk Trek", and many other people interviewed. There are also interviews with many of our favorite cast members including Leonard Nimoy, Walter Koenig, James Doohan, DeForest Kelley and many others. And clips of behind the scenes of DS9 and Voyager.

The interviews of the cast members are interesting, funny and at other times tear jerkers. And a look at the fans in their interviews is equally entertaining. No one has fans like Star Trek does, and this movie shows that!

Trekkies 2

This movie took the first one, and made it better by 100%! I was absolutely blown away about how much improvement this movie was to the original. For one thing, there was much more variety. This movie visits many different countries, and interviews many different people, and this time shows the world's love for Star Trek. Germany, France, England, Brazil and many other countries are visited. Very interesting to see other countries take on Trek.

It also lets us visit some of our favorite people from the original film, mainly the fan favorite Gabriel, and see how they are doing now, seven years after the original film. Another cool aspect of the movie is that we get to see a lot of American Star Trek tribute bands like Warp 11 among others. There are not as many Star Trek stars interviewed in this film as were in the original, but there is enough to keep us happy. Mainly the cast from the television series "Star Trek Enterprise" is interviewed, but Ethan Phillips, better known as Neelix on "Star Trek Voyager" returns as well as Denise Crosby as she hosts this film.

I didn't think this could beat the original film, because I loved the original "Trekkies" but this went above and beyond what the original film was. If you loved the first film, you will love this film 100% more! If you didn't like the original film, you need to see this, because it is 100% better, trust me.

The extras on this DVD are deleted scenes that last at least an hour long. It also has two fan films made by the people interviewed in this documentary.

You don't have to be a trekkie to enjoy this documentary featuring cast and fans of the orinal Star Trek TV series. Sweet, funny, insightful and a little strange.
