I bought the dvd figuring "what could be funnier the a fat schizophrenic?" boy was I wrong, it's not very funny at all. In fact it's quite serious, there are moments that are very funny but Wesley Willis was quite smart and thoughtful. it is like bevis and butthead remaking the movie rainman.

i thought a lot about the audience sensitivity to Wes' illness, or lack thereof, when my band was on tour with Wesley in 2000. Wesley himself would play up the "freak" aspect of his stage persona to work the crowd. He made a lot of money doing that. Walking around with wads fo cash, thousands of dollars sometimes. Wes was conscious of what he was doing but it was a post-Howard Stern-appearance era for him, so there wer lots of morons at his shows screaming for the mullet song and just acting like idiots. When we went into Canada with him it was the first time he toured there and it was a magical ride. Wes was much more himself and the fans were mostly fawning punk rockers who loved him for his music and saw what was special about him and made him feel good about himself. He improvised Hey Jude with kids, laughed and joked and head butted em all night. Much Music came out to interview him in Toronto and he was on it. And in Montreal Daniel Bitton
was there filming for this doc on Wes. That night in Montreal was a blur as I had about a 102 degree fever and was just trying to get through the showe. But the crowd was ravenous for Wes and he delivered. Check the movie and see for yourself. One very beautiful person indeed.

Wow, this is a great portrait, you can tell the filmmaker really loves Wesley. It's funny, sad scary, disturbing and loving. What a guy! Fascinating whether you know Wesley's music or not.
