Americans may think they know plenty about the White House--and in the wake of the Monica Lewinsky scandal, perhaps many feel they know more than they want to--but the National Geographic video Inside the White House will make you forget such sordid details. The history of the most famous house in the United States is a fascinating one, and this video seamlessly blends aspects of that monumental past with present-day behind-the-scenes access. The filmmakers were allowed to shoot preparations for a state dinner hosted by President and Mrs. Clinton for Boris and Mrs. Yeltsin--from the setting of 1,500 pieces of White House china to the intricate choreographing of the meal service, as well as security checks and final briefings for the President. Intercut with these scenes are segments discussing the White House's history, architecture, and high-profile residents, as well as anecdotes from all surviving former residents. Particularly moving are interviews with staff members, including the longtime White House butler who overheard Winston Churchill, deep in his cups, pacing the halls and rehearsing the speech that would include the phrase "the Iron Curtain" for the first time. Narration by Morgan Freeman and an uplifting score by Mark Adler add to the impressive polish of the documentary. --Anne Hurley

4 out of 5 stars Interesting & Informative.......2007-01-11

This is a nice addition to my high school government class. It is one of the better documentaries I've seen on the White House. I recommend it for anyone interested in our Presidential home.

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting look into the most famous house in America.......2006-07-16

I have recently become very interested in American history and have been buying up every dvd that looks cool regarding our great nation. I was pleasantly surprised by how interesting and captivating this video is. It not only shows the ins and outs of the white house but also touches on some of our history. I found myself grabbing my laptop and everytime something peaked my interest I was googling how the white house was destroyed by fire when captured by the british in 1814. I am looking forward to the day that I can sit down and watch it again with my children. Met and exceeded my expectations. Morgan freeman was good as well (narration). Peace and chicken grease!

3 out of 5 stars Good one but no where near the Air Force One.......2005-03-26

The only problem with this movie in my opinion is its running time. It could have also been limited to 60 minutes instead of 90 like Air Force One which is neither short nor to long and very accurate. This movie tells the history of the White House as to how Mr. George Washington decided to get it build and then afterwards the experiences of different Presidents and their families and the staff members. Also tells about the incidents and ups and downs faced by the House. Overall it is a well made informative movie but it is bit too long and to cover the length some material providing no information but only increasing the length has been introduced which could have been avoided.

5 out of 5 stars review National Geographic's Inside the White House.......1999-12-13

Unusual and fascinating, follows a typical day in the White House, weaving together past and present, presidents and worker bees. My 6-year-old daughter was transfixed and so was I.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent, in-depth view of the White House history!.......1999-04-17

This film was very well put together. Explaining the history of the White House that has never before been documented. A must see for any history and government enthusiast!

2 out of 5 stars Pentagon.......2006-07-28

The Pentagon video is useless because anyone with a photo ID and some free time can get a tour of the Pentagon.

3 out of 5 stars Already Dated.......2003-05-26

These DVD's are already dated! "Inside Air Force One" and "Inside the White House" are both back in the Clinton era, and there is much too much fawning about Bill and Hillary. "Inside the Pentagon" is more recent, however it is well before the Second Gulf War, and the revolutions that that war has seen in the area of freeing a country without destroying its civilian population or destroying its intrastructure. While these DVD's are appropriate for children, they are too dated for most adults.
