Supreme silliness doesn't stop The Day After Tomorrow from being lots of fun for connoisseurs of epic-scale disaster flicks. After the blockbuster profits of Independence Day and Godzilla, you can't blame director Roland Emmerich for using global warming as a politically correct excuse for destroying most of the northern hemisphere. Like most of Emmerich's films, this one emphasizes special effects over such lesser priorities as well-drawn characters and plausible plotting, and his dialogue (cowritten by Jeffrey Nachmanoff) is so laughably trite that it could be entirely eliminated without harming the movie. It's the spectacle that's important here, not the lame, recycled plot about father and son (Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal) who endure an end-of-the-world scenario caused by the effects of global warming. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the awesome visions of tornado-ravaged Los Angeles, blizzards in New Delhi, Japan pummeled by grapefruit-sized hailstones, and Manhattan flooded by swelling oceans and then frozen by the onset of a modern ice age. It's all wildly impressive, and Emmerich obviously doesn't care if the science is flimsy, so why should you? --Jeff Shannon

Who doesn't enjoy watching big things fall to pieces? Category 7: The End of the World wreaks havoc on the Eiffel Tower, Mt. Rushmore, the Pyramids, and a midwestern trailer park, among other things. More or less a sequel to Category 6: Day of Destruction (presumably the latest in a series that began with Category 1: Don't Forget Your Umbrella), Category 7 offers the reassuring sight of Gina Gershon, skilled with disasters like Showgirls, taking control of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Confronted with city-destroying weather, she calls in rebel meteorologist Ross Duffy (Cameron Daddo, star of such classics as Pterodactyl and Anthrax), who runs the Extreme Weather Lab and harbors theories that threaten the political status quo. Ross brings in Tommy Tornado (Randy Quaid, the sole returning actor from Category 6), Faith Clavell (Shannen Doherty, Charmed), and Col. Mike Davis (Tom Skerritt, Alien) to gather data...which isn't the most dramatic of activities (even when it involves souped-up cars and superjets), so the movie adds a subplot about a religious zealot (Nicholas Lea, The X-Files) who wants to unleash the plagues of Egypt so that everyone will realize it's the End of Days. What does it all add up to? A lot of over-the-top hooey (and that's not including the assorted family turmoils), but pretty entertaining nonetheless. It's like a lesser Michael Crichton novel: Take an inflammatory vaguely scientific premise, add two-dimensional characters, cheesy but spectacular effects, and a full-throttle if nonsensical plot, and presto! Over three hours of silly yet utterly watchable television. Pretty darned decent for its genre ............2007-06-13

Yes, another natural disaster movie beginning with a series of intense storms in unexpected places throughout the country and culminating with two big ones colliding to create a super-storm over Chicago. The acting was absolutely terrific and the film offers the expected line-up of small and large personal dramas, crises, close calls, heroics and rescues.

I do have to air my few gripes about its content. It seems to drop all reference to the tornado storm while dealing with the hurricane's arrival. And while most scenes are believably realistic, I had to roll my eyes that the "good guys" never faced enough of the storm, while the three dubbed "villains" were, of course, killed by it. The water scenes showed seas not nearly rough enough for a category 5 hurricane, too many people ran around lost in the streets amidst the storm, and are there really that many palm trees in Chicago? My final gripe ... what began as a series of storms building to these two merging abruptly ends, leaving the movie's entire theme of the overall catastrophic effects of global warming dangling pathetically. A politician's promises are all we're offered in the end.

Hey, pay no mind to my picking at the small stuff! Category 6 is decent and engrossing entertainment within the natural disaster genre! :-)

I'll make this short. I'm not going to shoot down this movie...however I will say this movie (mini series) suffers from the same ailment all of them seem to now-a-days--too many characters, too many subplots, not enough focus on the one main character and plot.

By the way...WHO IS THE MAIN CHARACTER?

On the other hand, having too many characters and subplots is better then craming it full of filler.

Good Disaster Movie along with Moive sequel Category 7 End of the World

Good as Disaster movies go but somewhat contrived .......2006-12-19

I enjoyed this for what it was and the idea of 2 mega storms was interesting. i have one complaint though - we played this on a computer and part way through it suddenly jumped to the titles and we had to go into scene selection to complete the viewing. The story line and acting were ok and i liked the fact that there was a build up to the actual disaster which allowed the charcters to become more real. The action was a bit contrived though and while i can see people being so silly, i hardly think that they would be so blase about it all. Still, all in all, i would recommend this to people who enjoy disaster movies.

This DVD has about everything a person could ask for when looking for something about tornados. There is the standard "meteorological talk" (which to some might be a bit on the cheesy side, but is educational and worthwhile in my opinion), great chase footage, as well as a good bit of footage about "after the storm," which is usually missing in all other tornado films. There is a lot of great "bonus footage" too. But the best part about this DVD is, whether you love it or hate it, it only costs about $3.00, so who could complain? (I can't leave out that this DVD also has a great sound clip of the "roar" tornadic thunderstorms often make -- that "freight-train" or, as I would call it "jet-engine" sound that everyone always talks about hearing when there has been a tornado.)

Nobody does comic existential angst like Nicolas Cage, who gets a good workout in The Weather Man, an underrated slice of quiet desperation. Cage plays David Spritz, a Chicago TV meteorologist who knows only too well the constant uncertainty of predicting the weather. Despite a possible offer from a network morning show, David's life is a mess: he's estranged from his kids and irritated wife (Hope Davis), he's perpetually at odds with his remote father (Michael Caine), and lately people on the street have had the disconcerting habit of throwing food at him. Director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean) has perhaps too heavy a touch for this kind of comic melancholy, but screenwriter Steven Conrad has an interesting, almost Mamet-like ear for "written" dialogue--Cage has a few voiceover monologues, including an uproarious sequence involving tartar sauce and a walk to the store, that are hugely funny. It's possible that we've seen Cage in this kind of character one too many times, but he's still good at it, and his doleful face and pasted-on smile fit the mood of the picture. Unlike the heroes of most Hollywood movies, David Spritz doesn't always--or often--do the right thing, but Cage makes you want to see the poor sap make it. --Robert Horton

This 1950s classic is based on the N. Richard Nash play of the same name (and not to be confused with the John Grisham novel and subsequent film). It's drought time in the Southwest; things are so bad that when a con man (Burt Lancaster) comes to town promising he can make rain, a rancher takes him up on it. But the rancher's spinster daughter (Katharine Hepburn) is skeptical--until Lancaster makes lightning strike her heart, with the unexpected consequence of the rainmaker falling in love with her. Lancaster is charismatic and funny and finds his match in Hepburn (with Earl Holliman providing comic relief as her impulsive younger brother).
