Elephant expert Cynthia Moss is your guide to the daily dramas in the lives of grand matriarch Echo and her elephant herd that Moss has studied for more than 20 years in Kenya's Amboseli National Park. Two classic Nature episodes, Echo of the Elephants and Echo of the Elephants: The Next Generation tell this remarkable story that includes mating struggles, difficult births, a baby elephant's first steps, mischievous children, kidnappings, emotional reunions, and, occasionally, death at the hands of a hunter.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome documentary.......2007-05-29

This is 2 separate stories each 1 hour long of the elephant family of "Echo" and shows how they communicate , care for each other and shows the great emotions of elephants. It has affected me in such a way that I am now in love with elephants.

5 out of 5 stars Best Elephant DVD.......2007-01-09

I am a huge elephant enuthusiast and own several Elephant DVDs. This by far is my favorite. You will follow a family of elephants lead by Echo. You will see how elephants survive in drought conditions, you will see them mate and give birth. You will see how they live and die. The most touching story was of the baby Ely who was born crippled and only able to walk on his knees. This is a must have DVD for any elephant love and you will be helping Cynthia Moss with her work in Kenya by buying this DVD.

The elephant king with the upright stance and smashing wardrobe finally has a movie to tell his story from the scampering days of his youth through his adventures in Paris to his days as husband, father, and king. Based on the popular HBO series--which in turn is based on the books of Jean and Laurent de Brunhoff--this 75-minute film features pleasant animation, a quasi-adult contemporary soundtrack, and adventures culled from several of the classic books, including "The Story of Babar" and "Babar and his Children." Celeste and the triplets, as well as Arthur, Cornelius, and Madame, all figure prominently. The resilient elephants face a series of mishaps, including fires, illness, and the battle with the rival rhinos. All tends to end well, except for the initial death of Babar's mother, which happens Bambi's-mother-style about 10 minutes into the movie. (Ages 2 and up) --Kimberly Heinrichs

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Kinder, gentler Babar, gorgeous, wonderful, YES for 3-4 yr. olds.......2007-01-10

I first bought Babar the King (see my scathing review) and thought I might give this one a try. What a difference! None who have seen both would ever call this violent. Granted the dream sequence is a trifle bizarre, I just fast forward as those creepy dream guys bothered me, too. HOWEVER, the rest of the movie is so gentle and so true to the spirit of Babar that I can easily overlook creepy dream guy, which sequence, btw is from the original. Not sure? Rent it from Netflix, if you don't absolutely love it and go right to Amazon to purchase it for your children, I would be really surprised. That's what I did. Great for 3.5 to 4 on up.

5 out of 5 stars Babar!!!.......2006-11-07

Babar was my favorite move when I was younger. Now I watch it and still enjoy it. As for the whole mother dying, well it teaches the small ones that life is short, and dont take things for granted. Also teaches them that death is apart of life, and bad things happen for a reason like with all the bad luck towards the end of the movie. The old woman getting bitten by the snake, the fire in Cornilious house, and the crocadile in the lake. When ever I finally have kids they will watch it and learn from it.

4 out of 5 stars Good for Toddlers.......2005-02-12

I agree with another reviewer that the scene where Babar's mother is killed is a little disturbing. However, it is still relatively mild compared to the more violent themes in the other Babar video ("Babar The Movie"). My 2-year old doesn't seem too bothered by it. Just watch it together with your child a few times to make sure they know that Babar is OK but don't make a big deal of it. The rest of the movie seems to be essentially from Babar books, strung together as a series of stories. The music is good--not fabulous but way more pleasant for adults than Barney or the Wiggles. All in all, I would recommend this for kids 2-4 years with no reservations.

3 out of 5 stars Allright, but could have been better.......2004-10-11

This film of Babar's rise from baby to king is all right, but certainly could have been better.. I feel it does not really do justice to the story as told in the original books (which I myself enjoyed so much as a small child). The overall quality of the production is not up to the level of the television series either, which was much better (quite good actually).
The story telling lacks the charm of the originals... and there are some changes. Something that is jarring is that the characters of Babar, Celeste, and Arthur speak with their adult voices (from the series) rather early on when they are still children..
The worst thing in the film is the rather horrible music.. it may well induce brain damage. Where on earth did they find the people to do THAT? Babar deserves better.

Ultimately small children well probably enjoy it, but it could have been better. If the televsion series gets released to DVD, that will be something to look for.

4 out of 5 stars Great BUT watch with younger kids.......2002-02-14

Of course in typical Disney fashion the mom has to die for the story to move on...we skip that scene of course as well as one where the animals are at "war"...overall I wouldn't have gotten this but it was a gift so hey, free is free. Not one of my son's most favorite (right now we are watching Shrek ad nasueam) but still cute.

2 out of 5 stars Not That Exciting!.......2006-05-29

I purchased this for my son who was doing a presentation on Lions in his class. It was informational, but extremely boring. The background music was pretty lame.

I needed it in a hurry and paid for an upgrade in shipping...and I'm sorry that I did!

5 out of 5 stars Nicely produced movie about elephants and lions.......2005-05-20

I had ordered this DVD along with one other (Predators III: The Killing Game). That one was a disaster (see my review on it). So it was with trepidation that we put on this one.

It is definitely well-shot. The photography is excellent, as is the narration and pace. There are a lot of close-ups, and nice action photography (including a chilling, up-close depiction of a buffalo calf being chased, brought down, dragged and then suffocated to death by a pride of lions).

There are two distinct short movies on this DVD, one dealing with elephants, the other with lions. Both cover information systematically about their habitat, their diet, their family and living habits, and their friends and foes.

I would probably have given the movie 4.5 stars, but Amazon does not have fractional ratings, hence I rounded the rating up to 5. Definitely recommended for people who like to watch wildlife movies.

4 out of 5 stars A good one on Lions and Elephants.......2005-03-26

This movie is good one on Lions and Elephants. Tells about their origins, types, family, eating habits, mating habits, friends and foes and their habitats. Though so many movies have already been made about Lions and elphants, still this one is good and informative and worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Cleese in top form.......2006-08-07

In this "In the Wild" episode, John Cleese ventures to Madagascar to check up on five captive-raised lemurs that were released back into the forest. Along the way, he peppers his explanations and commentary with typical one-liners, just what you'd expect from the Monty Python alum. Anyone who likes Mr. Cleese's style will not be disappointed. Besides the entertainment value, you will learn a thing or two about lemurs, too!

              Four stars. Highly enjoyable!

5 out of 5 stars In the Lion's Den with Anthony Hopkins.......2006-03-28

This is a Wonderful movie about the behavior and myths about Lions.

5 out of 5 stars In the Wild: Lemurs With John Cleese.......2004-11-28

If you like lemurs, but this now. Now, now, now. Go on, I'll wait. Got it? Good.

I wish all nature programs could be this funny, entertaining and informative. Cleese's self-deprecating humor and his obvious love for lemurs shine through and make this a wonderful documentary. Plus, his honesty is a breath of fresh air -- after the tremendously long plane trip to Madagascar, an incredibly bumpy ride over what could only charitably be called "roads," and slogging (mostly uphill) through the rainforest only to catch a slight glimpse of the tail of one lemur, almost a football field away, he says, "Was it worth it?" NO, IT WASN'T WORTH IT!" and I nearly fell out of my chair laughing.

4 out of 5 stars A portrait of that magnificent creature... a movie star.......2004-02-18

This would be indistinguishable from any random episode of "Nova" or "Nature" without the stardust sprinkled over the proceedings by the elfin Academy Award [registered trademark!] winner who - as it happened - was the only reason I sought this out in the first place. Consequently, I think I may have learned more about "actress hollywoodus" than "felidae acinonyx". Ms. Hunter shamelessly twinkles, dramatizes, flirts, and broods - effortlessly capturing the center of attention, whatever the situation. In a word: she's a star - even in the incongruous setting of Africa, whose film associations provide her with one wisecrack that made me burst out laughing. Having spent the night sleeping on open ground in pursuit of the documentary crew's fleet quarry, she sighs over the dishevelled state of her hair and laments in voice-over, "How come this never happened to Meryl Streep?"

4 out of 5 stars Great video on endangered species - for young adults +.......2004-01-22

This is quite an entertaining and educational video - the reviewer above is quite correct in saying that some parts are difficult to watch, but they are not arbitrarily thrown it. Viewers are confronted with images which illustrate the many ways in which species face eradication due to poachers and hunters. It underscores the need for the conservation efforts such as those of the San Diego Zoo, whose work is highlighted here. Whoopi is fun, but the video is not "funny" - and it is definately NOT for young impressionable viewers. Great for middle school and up.
