Something the Lord Made recounts the relationship between Dr. Alfred Blalock (Alan Rickman) and Vivian Thomas (Mos Def). It begins in 1930s Nashville when imperious cardiac surgeon Blalock hires Thomas, an African American carpenter, as his janitor. When the latter reveals a passion for medicine and facility with surgical instruments, Blalock promotes him to lab tech. Thomas isn't given a raise, works side jobs to make ends meet, and is expected to be grateful. Along the way, he follows Blalock from Vanderbilt to Johns Hopkins, where they save thousands of lives through their pioneering work, but will Thomas ever get any credit? The film provides a satisfying answer to that question. Joseph Sargent (A Lesson Before Dying) directs with subtlety and intelligence, while Rickman and Mos Def are in top form, often underplaying where most actors would do otherwise. Something the Lord Made won the 2004 Emmy for outstanding made-for-TV movie. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

(Drama) Something the Lord Made tells the emotional true story of two men who defied the rules of their time to launch a medical revolution, set against the backdrop of the Jim Crow south. Working in 1940s Baltimore on an unprecedented technique for performing heart surgery on "blue babies," Dr. Alfred Blalock (Alan Rickman) and lab technician Vivien Thomas (Mos Def) form an impressive team. As Blalock and Thomas invent a new field of medicine, saving thousands of lives in the process, social pressures threaten to undermine their collaboration and tear their friendship apart.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent movie!.......2007-07-03

This movie is a must see. It will keep your interest throughout. There are no dull moments. I didn't realize that Mos Def is such a wonderful actor.

5 out of 5 stars The Birth of Open Heart Surgery.......2007-06-27

Before (or after) you see this incredible video, you might want to read the book, "Partners Of The Heart" written by Dr. Vivian Thomas,an account of his role in pioneering open heart surgery. It's funny to see a young Dr. Denton Cooley as a resident observing and learning. This is a heart wrenching story of a man with talent beyond comprehension who never had a chance to actually attend medical school - simply because of his race. Even if you are not entrenched in the medical field you will appreciate this movie. The acting is superb, and it is said Mos Def does an outstanding job of portraying Dr. Thomas.

5 out of 5 stars A story about a miraculous surgery that saves lives........2007-06-26

Born in 1987, I never knew the story about the surgery that saved my life. I was born a "blue baby", yet today I am still alive. Two amazing figures in the history of medicine made this all possible.
"Something the Lord Made" is a powerful story about two colleagues of different backgrounds who strive to save babies with a congential deformity. The movie shows great social inequality as a genius African American assistant helps solve the mystory of the heart. Without this groundbreaking research, many people today would not be alive.

5 out of 5 stars Something the Lord made right!!!.......2007-06-12

Absolutly superb.
Heart warming and sincere.

5 out of 5 stars Something HBO Made.......2007-05-17

When I read the description of Something The Lord Made, I thought to myself - there is just no conceivable way that this is going to be interesting. However, it did have a lot going for it. It was directed by Joseph Sargent, who also directed the brilliant, A Lesson Before Dying. It starred Alan Rickman who is so good he could make an IKEA commercial look like it was directed by Ingmar Bergman. It paired Rickman with Mos Def, who has remarkable screen presence. (I first noticed Mos Def in another exceptional film, The Woodsman, which, coincidentally or not, also featured Kyra Sedgwick.) So, despite the promise of (in)action confined exclusively to a medical lab, I forged ahead.

I'm so glad I did. This is one of those minor gems you might easily miss. Make sure to pay attention to the score, which is outstanding. It's way too easy to sketch this movie out as an anti-racism diatribe, that's way too facile. As with A Lesson Before Dying, racism is simply a fact, not a larger-than-life villain. This, of course, makes the depiction that much more powerful. We don't see the pain of racism courtesy of gassy soliloquies; we feel the pain of it as we read Mos Def's face watching Dr. Blalock receive his award at Baltimore's Biltmore Hotel.

Why beat a dead parrot? We know the Biltmore is segregated. Vivien - Def - can only gain admittance by posing as a bellhop. We know that Blalock is a vain and arrogant surgeon (quelle surprise!) only too willing to bask in glory that would never have been his without Vivien's remarkable contributions. And yes, we know that the racist culture surrounding these men makes it easy for Blalock to distance himself from Vivien when it suits him.

This context of racism is woven right into our flag; it's part of the culture, hardly newsworthy enough to merit a film. The engine that's really driving Something The Lord Made is not racism at all; it's the subtle, complex relationship joining these very different men who share a passion for medicine. The interplay between Vivien's self-effacing, quiet dignity and Blalock's braggadocio is pure gold, these two are so right for each other; they balance one another in a way that is touching at the very least.

Certainly there were moments when I wanted to explain to the supercilious twits at Hopkins that Vivien was the genius behind the wheel and they should be lavishing praise on him. At times it was sad, and Vivien's stoicism makes it sadder. But the movie never takes cheap shots; Def and Rickman offer marvelously reserved performances, thereby increasing the impact. Ultimately I was left with an overwhelmingly positive sense of how people can, and often do, achieve miraculous things despite the mountains of debris and bizarre baggage they've been saddled with. A wonderful film.

"Antwerp!" For science fiction fans, the long-awaited VHS and DVD release of The Lathe of Heaven is a dream come true. This haunting adaptation of Ursula K. Le Guin's genre-classic novel was broadcast but once on PBS in 1980 before rights and other legal snafus relegated it to the archives. Reportedly PBS's most requested program, the made-for-TV film was at last rebroadcast in 2000. Set in Portland, Oregon, in the near future, The Lathe of Heaven stars Bruce Davison as George Orr, who, to put it mildly, has a dream problem. Not only do his dreams come true, but they "change reality back to the Stone Age."

Kevin Conway costars as Dr. Haber, a dream specialist who instantly recognizes George's gift and tries to harness it to make the whole world right. But, as George notes, "Unlimited power means unlimited danger." The increasingly megalomaniacal Haber uses George to try to cure the world's ills, from overpopulation to war, resulting in, for starters, a devastating plague and even alien invasion.

Many in this production went on to projects familiar to audiences: Cowriter Diane English went on to create TV's Murphy Brown; Scott Rudin, credited with "Principle Casting," is now one of Hollywood's most formidable producers; Margaret Avery, who costars as a skeptical lawyer who comes to believe George's incredible tale, was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in The Color Purple. For those who have only been able to see this now-legendary production on poor-quality bootleg tapes, this release will be sheer heaven. The DVD contains an interview with Le Guin conducted by Bill Moyers. --Donald Liebenson

5 out of 5 stars PBS Special from 1979 Reissued.......2006-11-25

I saw this on PBS in 1979 and it stayed with me for years. I don't have a problem with the production values, not being that impressed with computer special effects in place of human narrative anyway. The film still moves me. Watch for UKL in the cafeteria scene.

5 out of 5 stars All We See or Seem is But Dreams Within a Dream ???.......2006-10-01

This first made for Public TV movie is an excellent adaptation of the singular "speculative fiction" novel, "The Lathe of Heaven", by the well known and talented author, Ursula K. Le Guin. Like the novel, the movie has a fluid fast pace, but with plenty of appropriate details of character, foreground and background. This gives a rich and vivid quality to the changing course of the flow of the plot, via colorful and creative sharp screenplay. However, as the motion and emotion move along, they are not overdone, giving a balanced "realistic" feel to such a "dreamy" story. Again, like the novel, the movie can be followed in a number of "symbolic" ways. It could be "objective" allegory, dealing with common human and world themes of mystical religion. Or it could be "subjective" allegory dealing with a "typical" dreaming series of a "typical" human, with the main "personas" representing the major "parts" of the human psyche. Yet it could be a "personal" metadream of one individual, a unique "just so" adventure of one George Orr.

In any case, this viewer feels that the novel was indeed successfully transfered over into the movie, which seems to be rare for "speculative fiction", and especially for such a surrealistic type. Amazing, that such a "verbal" media work can be rendered so well as a "visual" media work. Ursula K. Le Guin was on site as the movie was made, in only a few weeks with only a quarter million dollars. The DVD has an interesting and informative interview, with Ursula K. Le Guin, as one of the added features. No wonder then that this movie has been one of the most requested reruns of cinema and television -- and certainly a favorite of Public Television +++

4 out of 5 stars I Thought This Film Had Been Lost Forever.......2006-09-12

I had never heard of this story or the film when I happened to watch it by accident on PBS late at night by myself over 25 years ago. It was such an incredible story. I still remember it to this day. I was going to go to bed, but I couldn't leave my TV set - I was transfixed by the story.

Until I read this website and the other reviews, I had no idea why I never saw the movie again.

The release of this DVD after so many years makes me grateful that this extraordinary movie has not been lost, that I wasn't the only one who thought he saw something really unusual, and that now others can see it too.

5 out of 5 stars The Haber Institute of Oeinerology plays God.......2006-06-27

The Greatest Good for the Greatest Number! What can I say about this brilliantly plotted work of literature brought to life though a cheaply budgeted but great film? Essentially a Dream Psychologist discovers that his assigned patient is telling him the truth when he is informed that the patients effective dreams can change reality. Haber uses this talent to re-create the world in the images that a smart scientist believes best. First he creates the means by making his status in society important with the creation of a new institute dedicated to Oeinerology (dream research) and uses George Orr's mind to increase the power of his augmentor machine. This done, he begins to change the world through dream suggestion to make the world right in a matter of weeks that thousands of years of history could not do. But because of the mind of Mr. Orr, both positive and negative things happen. Haber is not thwarted by this but pressures Orr to perfect his augmentor through dreams so that he can change the world without Orr's mind. The only problem is that he discovers a great secret when he finally ventures into the Lathe of Heaven. He discovers that all existence is in the mind of Orr and that the world had really ended some time ago due to Nuclear armageddon. Orr, a staggering survivor nearing death by radioactive poisoning, willed the world back into an existence that is really an effective dream of his own making!!!

4 out of 5 stars He feels the sting of courage not shown in the moment.......2006-03-26

The boy who sleeps and dreams and changes the future. He still believes in the purity of love and wants a better world than this one, this melodrama, this snake coiled round a tree eyeing the naked woman. It is that solid wall against which he breaks himself. No one told him he could just allow his life to happen. No one told him to let go, to relax, to be. And, of course, good wine and guitar music and bad TV are all that are left. Our hero can change the future no less than he can change his need to gently kiss the bare shoulder of a strange and innocent girl. He feels the sting of courage not shown in the moment. But, is it all worth the suffering and toil and embarrassment? No. And that's the worst of it. So it goes with all good intentions gone sour with the poison of comfort and complacency. The pitbull next door demands his bones, and Joni Mitchel sings her sad, sad scratchy song on an ancient machine that still uses large black plastic discs and vacuum tubes to make the music music.

Sunset Strip would like nothing more than to become a sex, drugs, and rock & roll American Graffiti for the 1972 Los Angeles scene, right down to the flashy "where are they now?" coda. The film follows the lives of fringe players in the music industry who crisscross paths over a 24-hour period. Funky fashion designer Anna Friel and colorblind photographer Michael Baker are the ostensible leads, best friends whose hopeless affairs and quickies blind them to the growing attraction between them. Orbiting around these two are naive young rock & roll dreamer Nick Stahl; cynical, substance-abusing songwriter Rory Cochrane; Afro-wearing, jive-talking would-be impresario Adam Goldberg; country-fried rocker Jared Leto; and Scottish art-rock superstar Tommy J. Flanagan. Director Adam Collis, working from a script cowritten by Randall Jahnson, who penned The Doors for Oliver Stone, tries to capture the easygoing, offhanded quality George Lucas brought to American Graffiti. It's an entertaining piece with a restless undercurrent of characters stumbling around for their place in this hyped-up, hopped-up world, but Collis has little of Lucas's deft touch and the film ultimately has little to say about the characters or the period. This lightweight flashback, however, does come accessorized with groovy fashions, hip haircuts, and loads of rock music (some of it the real thing, the rest modern retro compositions). --Sean Axmaker

Description

The lives of six Hollywood hopefuls along L.A.'s famed Sunset Strip are forever changed during one momentous 24-hour period in August of 1972. If you loved "Almost Famous" and "Boogie Nights," don't miss "Sunset Strip" -- set against memorable '70s songs and unforgettably far-out fashions, it has "the makings of a cult favorite!" 1 out of 5 stars Totally Misses the Era With a Wretched Script.......2006-08-21

I can't believe previous reviews of this film. Sure, there are some talented actors involved, but that can't save an extremely bad script. Had they had something to work with, this could have been good. But what an embarrassing disaster this turns out to be for all involved!!

I was very familiar with the Sunset Strip circa 1968 - 1975. This movie misses the mark completely. It is so wrong! Too bad too, because on the surface, it could have an been excellent period piece. But, like the Doors, the more recent Brian Jones biopic disaster, and many other so called rock releated period pieces, it fails due to the lack of care, knowledge, and plain self-indulgence of the makers.

So to all involved in the writing, directing and production of this film - [...]!! YOU GOT THE WHOLE DAMN THING ALL WRONG!!!

To all potential buyers wanting an accurate view of the Strip and the times supposedly represented you won't find it here - steer clear of this piece of dung. Even if you don't care about accuracy, this film is just plain lousy. It should have never been made. JUNK! Believe me, I wouldn't want you wasting your time or money on this. Don't even rent, you'll be in for a huge disappointment.

3 out of 5 stars 5 out of 10.......2004-08-14

Sunset Strip was a good try but didn't really satisfy my experience. Seeing Sunset Strip increased my admiration for Boogie Nights and The Doors, which both were done brilliantly, given the circumstances of trying to capture the `70's feelings while being in the 90's. Sunset Strip comes short on few things. I am not feeling sure where the movie was telling me. The lack of meaning in the film also had let me down. The characters were fair but slightly corny. Seeing Jared Leto trying to be Brad Pitt gives me a "rolling my eyes" look cause there is no way he can be Brad Pitt, no matter how hard he tries. There were a few genuine comedic scenes that gave a good amount of energy to get the movie going. Although short to the end, the ending was too abrupt. Overall, I feel the movie gave it a good try. Really, there is nothing much of good or bad to comment on.

5 out of 5 stars Good movie.......2003-07-29

I liked it because it has Rory Cochrane. So there.

3 out of 5 stars doesn't stack up.......2002-08-24

This is another movie about the 60s/70s with all the sex, drugs, and rock & roll. But this one doesn't quite stack up to the others. There are two storylines, that never really converge. I'd say the acting is ok, it's an ensemble cast, but no big names in there, nor any stellar performances. The soundtrack is good, but other than that, this movie doesn't add anything that those that came before have. Maybe check it out on cable.

2 out of 5 stars Not the worst, but..........2002-08-06

I rented this movie with the sole intention of seeing what Rory Cochrane's been up to since "Empire Records". Nice to know he's still playing the disaffected youth, only grown to full-blown sociopathic, self-destructive adulthood. I didn't think the movie was terrible in and of itself, hence two stars instead of one. I was amused by the costuming (I almost want to own all of Hot Lava's clothes), really liked some of the camera work, got a kick out of the soundtrack and loved the scene where Zack and the busboy start playing guitar. Still, the dialogue wasn't particularly inspired, for the life of me I couldn't figure out WHY Michael was in love with Tammy, the musician characters were entirely one-dimensional (though I do agree with whoever it was who said Jared Leto was the best actor in this lot) and was left hollow by the tidy little notecards at the end of the movie telling the outcome of everyone's lives. As for Felix...oh, Rory...I was so disappointed. This character could've been the muse/honesty barometer/fairy godfather, and there are hints of that side of him, i.e. when he takes it on himself to get Michael and Tammy together. Instead he just comes across as hostile and smelly, occasionally taking the time to randomly do things that might be construed as benevolent if done by someone who wasn't so clearly misanthropic. Perhaps the best way to watch this is as the appetizer for "Almost Famous". Just enough '70s flavor to get you going, but nowhere near enough to eclipse the real article.

4 out of 5 stars Not a Dream At All.......2007-06-20

While this documentary might be titled "E-Dreams," the money lost on Kozmo topped $250 million. Kozmo was possibly the greatest dot-com flameout: A company whose revenue never topped $2.5 million, Kozmo epitomized the "Grow Big Fast" business philosophy. Before their assets were dismantled in 2001, they had expanded to 12 markets and entered into an ill-fated $150 million deal with coffee giant Starbucks (of which 'Bucks only received $15 million). Hindsight, as they say, is 20-20, but watching this DVD it's impossible not to wonder how so many investors could have been so blind.

4 out of 5 stars The Rise and Fall of Kozmo.com.......2007-04-29

Four stars for e-dreams, mostly for the subject matter and a few insightful pronouncements by Yong Kang. But despite the striving music, pacing dragged (seemed longer than the already short ninety minutes). Same backdrop as Startup.com -- Nasdaq crash of 2000 -- and the founders of the respective companies were both deserters of Goldman Sachs!

4 out of 5 stars Fast-paced, amusing look at an internet company's implosion.......2005-10-23

E-dreams will probably be most interesting for those who are more business-minded or who were part of the internet boom. If you're neither of these, you may find yourself wondering, 'why do I care about this company,' or 'boy, that Joseph Park guy is really full of himself.' But if you are business-minded in the least, or if you have a passing sociological interest in that crazy period of economic history, you will probably find yourself captivated by the heady sense of inevitable world domination that permeated the offices of Kozmo.com and similar companies, which this documentary does a decent job of capturing.

The star of the film is definitely the young CEO, Joseph Park. While there's no doubt that he's very smart, capable, and determined, you also get the sense that he's in over his head at times and is just barely winging it. Less optimistic (or more realistic) people, if placed in the same position, would probably ask themselves, "What am I doing here - I need to step aside and let the experts handle this job!" and resign immediately.

Some of the entertainment value of the movie comes from the fact that despite the ridiculous nature of the Kozmo.com business model, the company had no trouble attracting massive amounts of venture capital in the frenzied atmosphere of the dot-com era's last days.

As a viewer, you can't help but wonder to yourself, what the hell were these i-bankers and VCs thinking!? After all, Kozmo.com was a glorified delivery service that relied on massive amounts of manpower to make deliveries. With many customers taking advantage of Kozmo's lack of minimum order size, severely cutting into Kozmo's margins as a result, it should've been obvious to anyone with basic arithmetic skills that the company would never break even, let alone earn the outsized profits that the VCs were expecting, based on their massive investments in the company. In this respect, the movie provides a first-hand look at the suspension of good business judgement that occurred during these years, when any idea, no matter how outlandish, seemed like a good bet for taking a company to the IPO stage.

5 out of 5 stars trip down memory lane.......2005-09-27

I remember seeing kozmo logos all over the place a few years ago in a trip to NY, so when I saw this film it was a fantastic reminder of what one can do with a bit of luck and tons of hard work..or is it the other way around?
Great film to watch and lots of insight into how not to run a company.

4 out of 5 stars A Sound Investment.......2005-08-09

Almost by definition, fly-on-the-wall documentaries have sub-standard audio - you can't have radio mikes on all your participants 24 hours a day, whatever your boom mike catches, that's what you're stuck with. So I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the audio in E-dreams. Almost all conversations were clear enough to be understood on the first viewing.

Equally fortunately, although Joseph Park is Korean, he has an clear and standard American accent. This is just as well, because this movie should have been called "The Joseph Park Show". The guy is on screen the whole time (except - perhaps significantly - during the payroll chaos in the despatch area ) and he does not shut up.

He has two modes of speaking - the first is snappy, caffeine-charged corporate-speak, the second is slow, thoughtful and annoying speak, you know, where the speaker repeats the first word of a sentence until the thought process fully kicks into gear.

With the hustle and bustle of a busy, energetic company, Joseph Park is the vortex of his tornado, but whether he's being too sharp or too tedious, the viewer always has a vigorous situation to absorb without necessarily having to concentrate on his every word. I especially enjoyed the Starbucks shareholder meeting and the aforementioned payroll chaos - the bosses were in their ivory tower talking about millions in venture capital while the poor delivery guys were trying to extract their hundred bucks from the clueless paymaster.

Whether by accident or design, I found the clarity of the audio decreased towards the end. It was almost as if Joseph Park was being swallowed into the belly of a whale - the plunge of the NASDAQ, the losses being racked up by the company, the mirage of the IPO, the people appearing out of left field to take over Kozmo. It all added up so that his voice was no longer the song to which the company danced.

This leads me to the DVD extras. There is a full-length commentary, with both the director and Joseph Park. Unfortunately the director said virtually nothing about how the movie was shot , or his vision, or even his opinion on what he was witnessing. He is basically there to ask Joseph Park questions, and the whole commentary becomes a tedious post-mortem of a dead company. If you can wade through 90 minutes of Joseph Park in annoying-speak mode, there are a few snippets and worthy insights, but generally the commentary is not worth your time.

Equally disappointing is a mini feature, supposedly about what the main participants moved onto a couple of years after Kozmo closed. Unfortunately the production standards are low and Joseph Park has nothing interesting to say anymore.

This movie was hard to get for a while, but I see now that's back in print. If you are interested in how snappy talking and a big smile can rake in millions of dollars, grab E-Dreams and let Mr Park take you on a wild ride of good intentions, incompetence, big bucks, hype and ambition.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the most incredible story in American history.......2004-07-21

Having lived in North Carolina my whole life, you'd better believe I knew who the Wright Brothers were even as a child. They may have been from Ohio, but they took flight in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, and we're pretty darn proud of that fact. This Biography video will be a real eye-opener to many, I'm sure. You would assume that the whole world went wild when Orville and Wilbur invented the airplane and that they were instantly hailed as geniuses and wined and dined by anyone and everyone. Do you know what actually happened in aftermath of that first flight on December 17, 1903? Nothing at all, basically. There's proof in the form of a snapshot of the plane taking flight, but only five newspapers across the country even mentioned this mother of all inventions, and few of those folks who did hear the story believed it ? even back in the Wright brothers' home town in Ohio. Just days before history was made in Kitty Hawk, the great scientist Samuel Langley, director of the Smithsonian Institution and the recipient of a huge $150,000 grant, made his much ballyhooed attempt at flight and failed miserably, convincing most of the public that man would never fly. Back in Ohio, the brothers start building a new plane, but they were only able to fly it 25 feet in front of invited press. Without the kind of winds that made Kitty Hawk an ideal test site, the brothers used a catapult to give their new plane the speed it needed to take off. This worked, and the brothers were taking flights of over half an hour by 1905. The Wrights sought a contract, but the American government ? unbelievably ? basically snubbed them; meanwhile, the brothers stopped flying altogether in order to keep their secret design safe. They eventually had to turn to Europe, and five incredibly long years after inventing the airplane, the government (along with French financiers) finally gave the brothers a chance to prove their claims. Wilbur went to France to show an exceedingly dubious French public that he was not a fraud. Finally, in 1908, the Wrights' accomplishment was recognized and the brothers became international celebrities.

You'll learn a whole heap of fascinating information on the Wright brothers in this video. It takes you through their initial work with gliders, the ups and downs of making a plane that could not only fly but could also be controlled by the pilot, their failures and even disasters, and the lives they led following their amazing success ? it was not a completely happy one, especially after the stress of a law suit against a competitor contributed to Wilbur's premature death at the age of 1945 in 1912.

On the first test run in December 1903, Wilbur crashed the plane before getting anywhere, and it took two days to repair it for another try (this time with Orville at the controls). There were several flights on that historic day, the first three of which failed to travel the required 300 feet. The fourth try was pure magic, though, as Orville flew 852 feet in 59 seconds. Here comes the most interesting story of all, however. The brothers and a witness named John Daniels were so elated that they forgot to tie down the light (605 pound) airplane. A gust came up and Daniels tried to hold the plane down, suddenly finding himself catapulted head over heels and stuck in the wires of the plane as it blew down the field and all but disintegrated. Fortunately, Daniels received only scratches, and the frightening experience provided him with the opportunity to later boast that he flew the historic fifth flight that day in Kitty Hawk. In 1908, the world's first airplane passenger flew alongside Orville and became the world's first airplane fatality when something popped and the plane plummeted to the ground ? Orville himself was seriously injured.

The above are just a few of the incredible facts you may never have heard about the building and successful flight of the world's first airplane. The video further highlights the fact that the Wright brothers were two relatively unknown bicycle makers with a personal obsession with the idea of flight, yet they succeeded where respected, well-funded, highly educated scientists and professionals failed. The story of the Wright Brothers is the quintessential story of good old American know-how.
