Why Did It Stop.......2007-01-12

This is one of the most amazing reality shows i have ever seen, its gets right to the heart of life, if you never had respect for firefighters,watch this ,it will change your mind (these guys are closer than most families will ever be)its a pity there is only one DVD released, i, as would many other people, would like to see more of the real life elements of this show, so producers if you`re reading this, get the finger out and release some more... well worth having in your DVD collection.....Chris Shelley..Dublin..Ireland.

Only a few episodes on this DVD, but that is the ONLY thing I can say badly about it. It brings you right onto the scene with everything from fires to rescuing a 600 pound man and a guy that was hit by a train. And as an added bonus, if you have read "The Last Men Out" but Tom Downey, you will see man of the names and people and stories in this DVD from Rescue 2 in Brooklyn. I think that was the best part of it. Almost getting to know the men for Rescue 2, and then actually seeing them in action in several of the scenes in this DVD. I would HIGHLY recommend the book to anyone interested. Its pretty neat to see how firefighters like Bob Galione, who found a cargo net and kept in on the Rescue truck just incase, uses it in the recuse of the obese man.

Overall, great DVD for the money, Highly recommended!

Wonderful, but too short. If the tv show went on for years, I should like to see other episodes and dvd. I love to watch real fire action, and I don't care if it is not spectacular as a commercial movie.

The Bravest DVD............2004-08-03

I watched the show religiously each night it was on. Here in Seattle that was at 0000 on Saturday night/morning. Unfortunately the show was short lived. Which did make me wonder after buying the DVD...Where is the rest of the series????

Even the bonus features showed some runs with Jersey City Fire Department (FDJC) in the promo that didn't make it onto the final copy. Along with countless other departments that didn't make it to the shelf (LA City, DC and more!)

Overall it was good, especially the memorial portion. Whole thing left me wanting more though.....
maybe some additional volumes?

The New York Fire Fighting Department is probably one of the most efficient and organized forces of its kind that the modern world has ever known. It needs to be, considering the complexity of that particular city. However, the limitations that professional fire fighting units faced between the `20s and `40s were severe. Technology as we know it today was still science fiction back then, as is clearly evidenced by the footage from the famous Stillman Fires Collection included in the 2-DVD set New York's Bravest - A Firefighting Odyssey (the first installment of a dual release on this subject). It is hard to picture the scenario as it was back then, with fire fighting carriages having to evolve from horse-drawn and steam-propelled to the more advanced motor-driven versions, and the severe restrictions of low-powered water jets.

These films are obviously a public relations effort. However, what comes across, more than anything else, is the sheer courage of men and women who had few of the protective devices and professional equipment of the present age at their disposal. Both from a historical and human interest perspective, the Stillman films make for captivating viewing. The world of yesteryear burnt just as readily as the contemporary version, it would seem - the clips of fires at New York as well as various locations such as Boston and London bring this out beyond doubt. It is an inborn human trait to rise above the problems of disaster, but we had better not forget what we had to learn over and over again as a result of our own carelessness!

As technology and technique evolved, so did the effectiveness of the New York Fire Department. Inventions like the Conran Monorail Nozzle system forever changed the danger-fraught world of professional fire fighters. All in all, a great educational tour de force made all the more effective by the rudimentary photography.

I have reviewed several A2Z products and I stand by my admiration for the product. I am a student and these are very convenient. My professor of advertising owns the bundle pack and he loves it. Resellers prices are definately worth it.

What a waste.......2006-11-30

I am a fire chief and fire warden. I've been in this business for decades. This DVD was SO disappointing. Silent black & white film sections of old firefighting, dorky background music, repeated scenes. This material is of such low quality, I am amazed that Amazon is selling it. I guess I just learned to really be careful reading the reviews. I hope this one helps you avoid buying this product. I will try to return it for 50% refund.

I just purchased NEW YORKS BRAVEST-A FIRE FIGHTERS ODYSSEY.Sadly i was very dissapointed in what i got, believe me i have the highest respect for firefighters all over the world but i think this was just a way to cash in on 9/11. firstly my DVD looked like it was run off in someones bedroom on a burner, the cover looks to me like a photocopy of the original, ok so the quality of the footage is old so there`s no telling if its the original, i have bought many dvds connected to new york firefighters and never quibbled over the price but this time i have to, $24.95 is way above the the value of what i received, and finally i will choose very carefully what i buy in future...

A History Lesson .......2006-05-02

Post 9/11 people have given a good deal of thought to the firefighters in New York - as well they should. These guys put their lives on the line for a minimum amount of reward simply to help the rest of us out.

This DVD brings that point home by showing us vintage clips from the 1920s and 1930s (in silent and black and white) showing firemen (they were all men then) knocking down fires with the most primitive equipment I've ever seen.

It's very dramatic and the director catches flames well.

Good Ferry Fire Footage.......2006-10-12

The best footage on here are the shots of the Staten Island Ferry burning. The angles are really good and the flame is caught well. That said, most of the shots are very good - for vintage footage. It's too bad there are no color shots, but its more than made up for with the great captures of the old school firefighting techniques and equipment. I reccomend this title highly.

More Quality Stillman Footage.......2006-05-23

If you are into fire footage, the Stillman films are some of the best vintage ones made. While they are black and white and have no sound, they manage to capture the starkness that is flames on film. The heroism of the firemen themselves is also well preserved, particularly when you think that they did not have any modern equipment at all. I liked the New York setting, as it gave it a certain sense of gravitas, but the real stars here are the flames and they are shot very, very well.

On Fire.......2006-04-27

This is a far cry from fire fighting stuff today. The guys in these clips are forced to fight fires with almost no safety equipment or aperatus at all.

The footage is very dramatic because they are seriously putting their lives at risk. The shots of the flames are well done as well.

There is no narration, so you sort of have to figure out what's goign on on your own, but I liked seeing just why these guys are called "New York's Bravest" - they were fighing on a wing and a prayer.

Good, real fire fighting shots.
