Editorial Review:
Description
Live Forever is a film about a period in the Nineties when anything seemed possible. Britain was of a time, of a people, of a place, which captured the world's imagination. A bright new culture deserved a bright new government. And it seemed, for a little while at least, that Britain had one. Live Forever is a story that builds to that moment in the Nineties when the politicians recognized the emergence of a vibrant British popular culture and seized it, guerrilla-fashion, to re-brand the country. In the mid-Nineties Britain was swinging again and Oasis' debut album Definitely Maybe captured the mood of the times; a swaggering and epic celebration of the joys of living purely for the moment. Along with Pulp and Blur, Oasis had kick-started an upsurge in home-grown musical talent. It heralded a new music scene, which became known as Britpop. But it wasn't just the music. British galleries, catwalks and records were the envy of the rest of the world. British culture rocked and cool Britannia had arrived.

The Man with the Golden Gun: The British superspy with a license to kill takes on his dark underworld double, a classy assassin who kills with golden bullets at $1 million a hit. Roger Moore, in his second outing as James Bond, meets Christopher Lee's Scaramanga, one of the most magnetic villains in the entire series, in this entertaining but rather wan entry in the 007 sweepstakes. Moore balances the overplayed humor of the film with a steely performance and Lee's charm and enthusiasm makes Scaramanga a cool, deadly, and thoroughly enchanting adversary. --Sean Axmaker

Goldfinger: To own Goldfinger (1964) on DVD is to have at your fingertips the proof that Sean Connery is the definitive James Bond. No one but Connery can believably seduce women so effortlessly, kill with almost as much ease, and then pull another bottle of Dom Perignon '53 out of the fridge. Goldfinger contains many of the most memorable scenes in the Bond series: gorgeous Shirley Eaton (as Jill Masterson) coated in gold paint by evil Auric Goldfinger and deposited in Bond's bed; silent Oddjob, flipping a razor-sharp derby like a Frisbee to sever heads; our hero spread-eagle on a table while a laser beam moves threateningly toward his crotch. Goldfinger's two climaxes, inside Fort Knox and aboard a private plane, have to be seen to be believed. --Raphael Shargel

The World Is Not Enough:Bond 5.0, Pierce Brosnan, undercuts his usually suave persona with a darker, more brutal edge largely absent since Sean Connery departed. Equally tantalizing are our initial glimpses of Bond's nemesis du jour, Renard (Robert Carlyle), and imminent love interest, Elektra King (Sophie Marceau), both atypically complex characters cast with seemingly shrewd choices, and directed by the capable Michael Apted. The story's focus on post-Soviet geopolitics likewise starts off on a savvy note, before being overtaken by increasingly Byzantine plot twists, hidden motives, and reversals of loyalty superheated by relentless (if intermittently perfunctory) action sequences.--Sam Sutherland

Diamonds Are Forever: Sean Connery retired from the 007 franchise after You Only Live Twice but was lured back for one last official appearance as James Bond in Diamonds Are Forever. Goldfinger director Guy Hamilton keeps the film zipping along gamely from one entertaining set piece to another, including a terrific car chase in a parking lot, a battle with a pair of bikini-clad killer gymnasts named Bambi and Thumper, and a deadly game with a bizarre pair of fey, sardonic killers who dispatch their victims with elaborate invention. Connery retired again after this one but he returned once more, for Never Say Never Again 15 years later. --Sean Axmaker

The Living Daylights: Timothy Dalton made his 007 debut in the lean, mean mode of Sean Connery, doing away with the pun-filled camp of Roger Moore's final outings. This James Bond is ruthless, tough, and romantic. The Living Daylights, set during the thaw of the cold war, begins with the defection of Russian KGB General Koskov (Jeroen Krabb) and his revelation of a Soviet plot to eliminate Britain's secret agent force. Assigned to eliminate Koskov's Soviet boss (John Rhys-Davies), Bond uncovers a conspiracy involving Koskov and an American arms dealer (Joe Don Baker). Veteran series director John Glen's action scenes have never been better--especially the show-stopping mid-air battle on the net of a speeding cargo plane--and he returns the series to the smart, rough, high-energy adventures that made the Bond reputation. --Sean Axmaker

A View to a Kill: Roger Moore's last outing as James Bond is evidence enough that it was time to pass the torch to another actor. Beset by crummy action (an out-of-control fire engine?) and featuring a fading Moore still trying to prop up his mannered idea of style, the film is largely interesting for Christopher Walken's quirky performance as a sort-of supervillain who wants to take out California's Silicon Valley. Grace Jones has a spookily interesting presence as a lethal associate of Walken's (and who, in the best Bond tradition, has sex with 007 before trying to kill him later), and Patrick Macnee (Steed!) has a warm if brief bit. Even directed by John Glen, who brought some crackle to the Moore years in the Bond franchise, this is a very slight effort. -- Tom Keogh

Thunderball: James Bond's fourth adventure takes him to the Bahamas, where a NATO warplane with a nuclear payload has disappeared into the sea. Bond (Sean Connery) travels from a tiny health spa (where he tangles with a mechanized masseuse run amuck) to the casinos of Nassau and soon picks up the trail of SPECTRE's number-two man, Emilio Largo (Adolfo Celi), and his beautiful mistress, Domino (Claudine Auger), whom Bond soon seduces to his side. Equipped with more gadgets than ever, 007 escapes an ambush with a personal-size jet pack and takes to the water as he searches for the undersea plane, battles Largo's pet sharks, and finally leads the battle against Largo's scuba-equipped henchmen in a spectacular underwater climax. This thrilling Bond entry became Connery's most successful outing in the series and was remade in 1983 as Never Say Never Again, with Connery returning to the role after a 12-year hiatus. --Sean Axmaker

Die Another Day: The 20th James Bond adventure, Die Another Day succeeds on three important fronts: it avoids comparison to Austin Powers by keeping its cheesy humor in check, allows Halle Berry to be sexy and worthy of a spinoff franchise, and keeps pace with the technical wizardry that modern action films demand. Pierce Brosnan is paired with American agent Jinx (Berry) in chasing a genetically altered North Korean villain (Rick Yune) armed with a satellite capable of destroying just about anything. John Cleese and Judi Dench reprise their recurring roles (as "Q" and "M," respectively); they're accompanied by weapons-laden sports cars, a hokey cameo by Madonna (who sings the techno-pulsed theme song), and enough double-entendres to keep Bond-philes adequately shaken and stirred. Die Another Day makes you welcome the familiar end-credits promise: James Bond will return. --Jeff Shannon

The Spy Who Loved Me: The best of the James Bond adventures starring Roger Moore as tuxedoed Agent 007, this globe-trotting thriller introduced the steel-toothed Jaws (played by seven-foot-two-inch-tall actor Richard Kiel) as one of the most memorable and indestructible Bond villains. Jaws is so tenacious, in fact, that Moore looks genuinely frightened, and that adds to the abundant fun. This time Bond teams up with yet another lovely Russian agent (Barbara Bach) to track a pair of nuclear submarines that the nefarious Stromberg (Curt Jürgens) plans to use in his plot to start World War III. The Spy Who Loved Me is a galaxy away from the suave Sean Connery exploits of the 1960s, but the film works perfectly as grandiose entertainment. From cavernous undersea lairs to the vast horizons of Egypt, this Bond thriller keeps its tongue firmly in cheek with a plot tailor-made for daredevil escapism. --Jeff Shannon

License to Kill: Timothy Dalton's second and last shot at playing James Bond isn't nearly as much fun as his debut, two years earlier, in the 1987 The Living Daylights. This time Bond gets mad after a close friend (David Hedison) from the intelligence sector is assassinated on his wedding day, and 007 goes undercover to link the murder to an international drug cartel. Robert Davi makes an interesting adversary, but as with most of the Bond films in the '70s, '80s, and '90s--and especially since the end of the cold war--one has to wonder why we should still care about these lesser villains and their unimaginative crimes. Still, Dalton did manage in his short time with the character to make 007 his own, which neither Roger Moore did nor Pierce Brosnan did. --Tom Keogh

Goldeneye: The 18th James Bond adventure was a runaway box-office success when released in 1995, thanks to the arrival of Pierce Brosnan as the fifth actor (following the departure of Timothy Dalton) to play the suave, danger-loving Agent 007. This James Bond is a bit more vulnerable and psychologically complex--and just a shade more politically correct--but he's still a formally attired playboy at heart, with a lovely Russian beauty (Izabella Scorupco) as his sexy ally against a cadre of renegade Russians bent on--what else?--global domination. All in all, this action-packed Bond adventure provided a much-needed boost the long-running movie series, revitalizing the 007 franchise for the turn of the millennium. -- Jeff Shannon

Live and Let Die: Roger Moore was introduced as James Bond in this 1973 action movie featuring secret agent 007. This film marks a deviation from the more character-driven stories of the Connery years, a deliberate shift to plastic action (multiple chases, bravura stunts) that made the franchise more of a comic book or machine. If that's not depressing enough, there's even a good British director on board, Guy Hamilton (Force 10 from Navarone). The story finds Bond taking on an international drug dealer (Yaphet Kotto), and while that may be superficially relevant, it isn't exactly the same as fighting supervillains on the order of Goldfinger. --Tom Keogh

For Your Eyes Only: After a ship sunk off the coast of Albania, the world's superpowers begin a feverish search for its valuable lost cargo: the powerful ATAC system, which will give its bearer unlimited control over Polaris nuclear submarines. As Bond joins the search, he suspects the suave Kristatos (Julian Glover) of seizing the device. The competition between nations grows more deadly by the moment, but Bond finds an ally in the beautiful Melina Havelock (Caroline Bouquet), who blames Kristatos for the death of her parents. The non-stop action includes automobile chases, thrilling underwater battles, and even a breathtaking tour over razor-sharp coral reefs. But all of this is merely a prelude to 007's cliffhanging assault of a magnificent mountaintop fortress. -- Robert Lynch

From Russia with Love: Directed with consummate skill by Terence Young, the second James Bond spy thriller is considered by many fans to be the best of them all. Certainly Sean Connery was never better as the dashing Agent 007, whose latest mission takes him to Istanbul to retrieve a top-secret Russian decoding machine. His efforts are thwarted when he gets romantically distracted by a sexy Russian double agent (Daniela Bianchi), and is tracked by a lovely assassin (Lotte Lenya) with switchblade shoes, and by a crazed killer (Robert Shaw), who clashes with Bond during the film's dazzling climax aboard the Orient Express. From Russia with Love is classic James Bond, before the gadgets, pyrotechnics, and Roger Moore steered the movies away from the more realistic tone of the books by Ian Fleming. --Jeff Shannon

On Her Majesty's Secret Service: Australian model George Lazenby took up the mantle of the world's most suave secret agent when Sean Connery retired as James Bond (although Connery returned in Diamonds Are Forever before leaving the role to Roger Moore). In On Her Majesty's Secret Service, 007 leaves the Service to privately pursue his SPECTRE nemesis Blofeld (played this time by Telly Savalas), whose latest master plan involves a threat to the world's crops by agricultural sterilization. Lazenby hasn't the intensity of Connery but he has fun with his quips and even lampoons the Bond image in a playful pre-credits sequence. Former editor Peter Hunt makes a strong directorial debut, deftly handling the elaborate action sequences with a kinetic finesse. --Sean Axmaker

Dr. No: Released in 1962, this first James Bond movie remains one of the best, and serves as an entertaining reminder that the Bond series began (in keeping with Ian Fleming's novels) with a surprising lack of gadgetry and big-budget fireworks. In his first adventure James Bond is called to Jamaica where a colleague and secretary have been mysteriously killed. With an American CIA agent (Jack Lord, pre-Hawaii Five-O), they discover that the nefarious Dr. No (Joseph Wiseman) is scheming to blackmail the U.S. government with a device capable of deflecting and destroying U.S. rockets launched from Cape Canaveral. Of course, Bond takes time off from his exploits to enjoy the company of a few gorgeous women, including the bikini-clad Ursula Andress. This is Bond at his purest, kicking off a series of movies that shows no sign of slowing down. --Jeff Shannon

You Only Live Twice: The film boasts the best of the Bond title songs (this one sung on a dreamy track by Nancy Sinatra), but the movie itself is one of the weaker ones of the Sean Connery phase of the 007 franchise. The story concerns an effort by the evil organization SPECTRE to start a world war, but the not-so-super villain behind the plot is the awfully civilized Donald Pleasence. The thin script is by Roald Dahl (shouldn't we have expected a better Bond nemesis from the creator of mad genius Willy Wonka?), and direction is by British veteran Lewis Gilbert (Alfie). But the movie can't hold a candle to Dr. No, From Russia with Love, or Goldfinger. --Tom Keogh

Octopussy: Roger Moore was nearing the end of his reign as James Bond when he made Octopussy, and he looks a little worn out. But the movie itself infuses some new blood into the old franchise, with a frisky pace and a pair of sturdy villains. Maud Adams--who'd also been in the Bond outing The Man with the Golden Gun--plays the improbably named Octopussy, while old smoothie Louis Jourdan is her crafty partner in crime. Two Bond films were actually released in 1983 within a few months of each other, as Octopussy was followed by Sean Connery's comeback in Never Say Never Again. The success of both pictures proved that there was still plenty of mileage left in the old license to kill, though Moore had one more workout--A View to a Kill--before hanging it up. And that title? The franchise had already used up the titles to Ian Fleming's novels, so Octopussy was taken from a lesser-known Fleming short story. -- Robert Horton

Tomorrow Never Dies: Pierce Brosnan returns for his second stint as James Bond (after GoldenEye), and he's doing it in high style with an invigorating cast of costars. It's only appropriate that a Bond film from 1997 would find Agent 007 pitted against a media mogul (Jonathan Pryce) who's going to start a global war (beginning with stolen nuclear missiles aimed at China) to create attention-grabbing headlines for his latest multimedia news channel. It's the information age run amok, and Bond must team up with a lovely and lethal agent from the Chinese External Security Force (played by Honk Kong action star Michelle Yeoh) to foil the madman's plot of global domination. Luckily for Bond, the villain's wife (Teri Hatcher) is one of his former lovers and 007 finds ample opportunity to exploit the connection. Armed with the usual array of gadgets (including a remote-controlled BMW), Brosnan settles into his role with acceptable flair, and the dynamic Yeoh provides a perfect balance to the sexism that once threatened to turn Bond into a politically incorrect anachronism. He's still Bond, to be sure, but he's saving the world with a bit more sophisticated finesse. --Jeff Shannon

Moonraker: This was the first James Bond adventure produced after the success of Star Wars, so it jumped on the sci-fi bandwagon by combining the suave appeal of Agent 007 (once again played by Roger Moore) with enough high-tech hardware and special effects to make Luke Skywalker want to join Her Majesty's Secret Service. This time Bond is up against a criminal industrialist named Drax (Michel Lonsdale) who wants to control the world from his orbiting space station. Bond thwarts this maniacal Neo-Hitler's scheme with the help of a beautiful, sleek-figured scientist (played by Lois Chiles with all the vitality of a department-store mannequin). Despite Moore's passive performance (which Pauline Kael described as "like an office manager who is turning into dead wood but hanging on to collect his pension"), Moonraker had no problem attracting an appreciative audience, and there are even a few renegade Bond-philes who consider it one of their favorites. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Bond is the Ultimate.......2007-06-27

If you love James Bond movies, wait, even if you just plain like Bond movies, get this collection. The movies look great and it is fabulous to watch how the character of Bond and the movies themselves evolve. Great for a film class or just someone who wants a lot of fun action adventure movies around. Plus at Amazon prices, you can't go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars wonderfully restored movies!.......2007-06-27

We bought this set after reading a lot of reviews that said how nice the movies looked (restored). We were pleasantly surprised that the restored movies exceeded our expectation. The movies are very clean and there are absolutely tons of extras on each DVD.

There are only 2 annoying things. 1) they don't come in chronological order. We just rearranged them, but then you can't quite see the entire title from inside the box. 2) the slim cases were cheaply made. For the price it seems like they should be a little more sturdy.

Because of the slim cases, they don't take up very much room (for 20 DVD's plus extras). We are very happy with the set.

5 out of 5 stars 007- Bond, James.......2007-06-26

Simply..........Amazing! I am glad I waited to collect the series...They are Bigger & Better than the original in all facets.....My only complaint if I were to have one, is that they are not in order. Besides that one flaw I am Super Happy with this Awesome James Bond Collection.......

5 out of 5 stars Finally!!!!.......2006-10-22

Finally, some footage of Free. I'm a longtime Paul Rodgers fan who got into music too late to see Free live so this DVD was something I had been waiting for.
Now, for the review:
Disc 1:
"The Beat Club" I already owned Mr. Big and All Right Now from the Let it Rock DVD series so these were not new to me. Mr. Big is a great showcase performance for the band but All Right Now is cluttered with too many images and not enough good shots of the band. Fire and Water is probably my favorite Free song and it did not dissappoint me.
"Doing There Thing" is my favorite part of the DVD, this full color five song set from Granada tv is excellent.
"Original Videos" Most of these videos start with a disclaimer that they came from VHS so the quality is not that good. This is true but the videos are okay. I am not sure how I feel about the Wishing Well video which seems to have been made in the 80's, doesn't show the bad at all and is just a typical MTV type video but with a Free song as the soundtrack.
Disc 2:
"Isle of Wight" Only three of the ten songs are actually videos, the others are audio performances with a slide show of the band and posters etc. There are additional angles available for the three videos which are interesting and a nice twist and alternate view of the songs.
In Summary, this is a nice package although a little disappointing in places but it's all we've got from Free and I will enjoy this DVD and I do recommend it and I still give it five stars, mostly for disc one.

Now, we need some vintage footage of Bad Company and let's hope Paul Rodgers films and releases a DVD of his current tour which according to one review I've read contains several Free songs as well as a few Bad Company.

5 out of 5 stars It was all right then and it's All Right Now.......2006-10-05

Having been a Free fan since my early teens in the late 70's, it seems I have always been on a quest for everything that has ever been released by this outstanding band. I would scour flea markets and tag sales for out-of-print lps and with every new technology from VHS to CDs to DVDs I've totally enjoyed experiencing a better, sharper, clearer view of what I consider to be the best rock band ever.

Now, with the release of Free Forever, I am satiated (for now). The cool part about this dvd is that it not only has all of the obvious footage which I've seen before - it also contains footage that is not really commercial, but fascinating in it's own way. Some shots, like Paul Kossoff and his dad eating fish and chips, are mindblowing for a fan who has only ever seen Koss coaxing a tormented solo out of his Les Paul or laying down a funky, rockin' groove with Andy and Simon on tunes like Songs of Yesterday. Also, the short Austrailian interview with the band just proir to their intial break-up in '71 shows just how intense these guys were. No wonder the music was so great. When you combine talent, passion, youth, and focus - and then have Paul Rodgers sing on top of it - it does not get any better.

If you are a fan (and you would not be on this page if you weren't) you NEED to buy this dvd. My only regret is that I am hoping that this is not the end (maybe more material will be 'discovered' in the future - one can only hope).

5 out of 5 stars Free's legacy is All Right Now.......2006-10-03

I've been waiting for a properly researched and well-put together Free Forever on DVD. This one has David Clayton, the biographer who wrote Heavy Load, as a consultant, and the attention to detail shows. This is a definite buy for anyone with an interest in early '70s rock or blues.

There are two discs, one with all known TV footage of Free, and one with the entire set of Isle of Wight footage and audio. This includes material from various camera angles, so you can see up to three views of the band. The Isle of Wight show is awesome, and it's a real charge to have this in cleaned-up form. The band pulls in and plays a tight, energetic set. One only wishes that they had filmed the encore.

Beat Club specialized in 1970 visual effects, some of which obscure the picture. The camera work is good, and for those studying the instrument techniques, there are plenty of close-ups. There is no audience, but Paul Rodgers closes his eyes and puts on a heartfelt performance. The Granada TV show is the stand-out. Mr Big kicks rear, but All Right Now is the one for guitarists to watch - PK turns the rhythm upside down. The picture is outstanding; there are some flares on bright reflections and some microphony, which comes across as a visual marker that the camera, like the amp, is pre solid-state, and They Don't Make 'Em Like That Any More.

There are several interviews, and live footage shot by Simon Kossoff (Paul's brother), which doesn't have any sound but this is a completist disc, so every foot of film is there. There are tributes to Kossoff, including stills and poignant footage by his brother. The best looking track is a VHS-derived All Right Now of unknown provenance (the insert is so authentically hippy-looking that I can't read it to see where it was shot). PK and PR look like the Plant and Page analogues they could have been if things were different. They look great together. Each one of the band is way above proficient. It's unbelievable that all four could be so good. What a shame it didn't last!

3 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 stars - Not complete, but I am grateful for its release........2007-06-27

I couldn't resist buying this in the store yesterday because I just love TLC's music and charisma. They are also one of the few artists who I think truly mastered the art of the music video. Here's the list of videos included on this DVD:

01. Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg
02. Baby-Baby-Baby
03. What About Your Friends
04. Creep
05. Red Light Special
06. Waterfalls
07. Diggin' On You
08. No Scrubs
09. Unpretty
10. Girl Talk

This DVD contains the videos for their biggest hits, but I also would've liked to have all of their videos. Maybe even some of the solo ones. I really love all of them, but my favorites are "Waterfalls," "No Scrubs" and "Unpretty." "No Scrubs" is futuristic and cool, just like most of Hype Williams' videos. The video also has Lisa's rap segment, which definitely should've been included on the album. "Waterfalls" is just beautiful. Every time I watch it, it feels like the first time and I'm touched. "Unpretty" has a great story and message that I think everybody needs to hear these days. The 5.1 Surround Sound option is very nice. The quality sound brings the videos to life even more. The photo gallery is pretty lame. There are just four small pictures, one from each album/era. They're nice, though. The behind-the-scenes footage also isn't that exciting. It's a little promo from the Fanmail era mixed with a few pictures and parts of videos.

Overall, like many have said before, this collection is great but incomplete. However, I'm grateful that we finally have a TLC video collection released. TLC continuously made great, compelling and energetic videos. (Note to record labels: wait until the end of an artist's career to release a video collection and include all of them!)

4 out of 5 stars Close...but no cigar!.......2007-06-22

I have to concur with most of the other reviews on this particular DVD compilation. I bought this with the thought that I might get more than the videos provided on the bonus DVD that came with the "TLC: Now and Forever...The Hits" collection. Which it does, but it does not contain some of the alternate video versions of these songs, and "Hat 2 Da Back" is sorely missed from this collection. How could you miss this one?!? How could anyone forget that this was the first (and maybe the only) TLC video that had flashes of them dressed up in skirts and dresses as a contrast to their casual hip-hop look?!? That may have not been their biggest hit off of the first album, but it may have been their best video. I have this video on VHS from back in the day, and I would love to see it in a full digital format along with these other classic videos. I can live without the videos done as solo projects in this compilation because they truly were not within the TLC fold, but perhaps one day we will get the COMPLETE collection with the solo videos packaged with the "R U the Girl?" reality series.

4 out of 5 stars We're more likely to close up the hole in the ozone layer..........2007-05-30

...than to get a complete TLC video collection.

Unlike many other video releases, the Video Hits is only a bare bones release covering their biggest hits, not the entire arsenal of videos made by the greatest girl group that was TLC.

Why couldn't the record label have just released all of their videos on one collection? It wouldn't have been necessary to tie in the videos with the Hits collection cd. Just release a dvd entitled "All of It: TLC's Videos" or something to that effect.

I'm giving the disc 4 stars because it's TLC and the videos included are great; but I want a collection that has Hat 2 Da Back, Get It Up, Sleigh Ride, Damaged, and even the video TLC did with Goodie Mob. And the picture gallery included is not really a picture gallery. Just 3 group pictures in all from the different eras. Pathetic really.

4 out of 5 stars Still not complete.......2007-05-25

I have to agree with the previous reviewer - this set only gets a four star rating from me as well because there were several other TLC videos that were popular that were not included here. In addition to the ones that were mentioned, what about "Hat 2 Da Back"? That was the fourth hit single from OOOOOOOOOOOHHH...ON THE TLC TIP and I definitely remember the video for it, and the "Get It Up" video from the "Poetic Justice" soundtrack. If you brought the NOW AND FOREVER: THE HITS CD, you'll find this is nearly the same as the DVD that came with that collection (there were five videos on that one instead of the ten that this has) with the exact same behind the scenes footage and "photo gallery".

How soon people forget here in the States - this trio was the biggest selling girl group of all time, and now they are treated like they never existed. I don't know if it has anything to do with the fact that Sony is now distributing TLC's material instead of LaFace/Arista, but those of us who are fans of these ladies want to see more of their videos - we know that they are out there!

4 out of 5 stars Finally a US DVD; also in need of improvement.......2007-05-16

Ever since the death of TLC member Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, TLC's music has been treated poorly in the US. The cd version of "Now & Forever - The Hits" has been available internationally just a few months shortly after Lisa's death while it took the US until June, 2005 to get it. And This dvd has been in Brazil, UK and Australia since 2004. Finally US TLC fans can have their videos on dvd. The reason why this dvd does not get a whole 5 stars is that it is missing a few essential videos such as T-Boz's "My Getaway" and "Touch Myself", "Hands up", "Damaged', "Freedom" {Both R & B and Rap version videos} (Theme from Panther which they participated in), Lisa's "Block Party", and their holiday song "Sleigh ride". If those were included, then this would get a 5 star rating. This is still worth buying. 10 TLC videos are better than no TLC videos. TLC needs a more complete video hits dvd.

5 out of 5 stars In the Top 10.......2007-03-09

One of the best ever. Arthur Lee is (was, a major loss)a phenom. Try to find the original.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta Love This!.......2007-01-18

I have heard this album on CD many many times and so am very familiar with it. Generally, when I watch a concert, I like to hear the songs the way I remember them; from the album. This concert is very true to the album and to me, that is a major plus since I've always considered this music to be very special.

Do yourself a favor and get it! I, for one, LOVE it!!!

5 out of 5 stars arthur lee forever!.......2007-01-12

the time he was given was such a little while, but his music was way more than style. i would rate this dvd one notch above 5 stars. let's call it goosebumps. buy it for the experience. the referral is free.

5 out of 5 stars Can't seem to find the words..........2006-12-29

Let me start by saying that Forever Changes is one of my favorite albums of all time. I have listened to it hundreds of times and I am still not bored with it. I seem to love it more as the years go on.

Last fall I stumbled upon this DVD here at Amazon. I have not been as excited about a potential Christmas gift since I was a kid. I emailed my wife a link to Amazon and said "top of the list for me for Christmas"

Needless to say I got it and played it Christmas night after the kids went to bed and the house was quiet.

There he was. The genious. The man who suffered internally but found a way to produce a timeless album almost 40 years ago that reflected his gift. And there was an audience full of people who also love the album whom I immediately found a certain kinship with.

Now to the content. Incredible! First of all the sound was flawless - from horns to the strings to the drums to the bass to the guitars to the vocals. Secondly the video production was nearly perfect. Whoever managed what cameras shot when really knows the album because he/she knew just what to cut to and when. I was very happy with the video production. The only issue I could have was the lighting could have been better at times on the stage. The details of each song do not get overlooked. What you hear on the album pretty much is reproduced live on stage.

Arthur was sincere and really into the whole show. The fact that he is no longer with us makes this show even more special and timeless.

5 stars. I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars The other "Sargeant Pepper" album.......2006-12-09

The original Forever Changes album came out around 1967. The first time i heard it, all those years ago, I really didn't care for most of it. But I kept listening to it anyway. As I came to know all the songs, I started to recognize the genius behind them. They "grew" on me - in a large way.
Now, if I was ordered to give up all the music that I had, but could keep just one "album" - this would be the one.
I could not even count the number of times that I have listened to this music over the last four decades, yet I never get tired of it. In fact, some of the songs still give me the chills when I hear them. It is a masterpiece on the level of Sargeant Pepper - just not as well-known.
And if I had to choose my all-time favorite rock song - it would be "A House is not a Hotel"
The music of the Concert DVD does not quite meet the level of the original album, but it is a piece of rock history that should be treasured forever. And maybe "forever" will never change

5 out of 5 stars Huende wollt ihr?.......2007-04-04

1950's German cinema, bereft of the cultural contributions which became the "New German Cinema" of the late 60's and 70's, is an interesting period in filmmaking. This Stalingrad opus is a beautiful anti-war film, and historically accurate as you can get. Original Uniforms, actors who were German soldiers themselves during the war, and T-34's rolling over trenchlines. For those of whom love the series 08/15 this is a must. The only historical error that I can pick up would be the MG-42's replacing the 34. But outside of this supply issue (as most of the 34's had been in use in Israel for some time) the film is great.

3 out of 5 stars DVD OK.......2006-06-04

I have always been a fan of this movie and would recommend it to any student of Stalingrad. While the resolution of the DVD works well on a HDTV, I doubt if the DVD contains the original theatrical release version. The DVD contains the 4:3 formated movie, so don't foget to set your DVD player to this unless you want to see it stretched out on your widescreen TV.

2 out of 5 stars Not very engaging........2006-05-13

This movie is a disappointment considering it was made at a time when so many of the survivors were still alive and recently freed from Russian captivity. The film covers the experiences of a veteran German officer assigned as an advisor to a Rumanian Army Corps on the eve of the Stalingrad encirclement. The film does not go into any kind of depth either in terms of character development or story line to explain the importance and tragedy of Stalingrad. One must think that it even disappointed it's original German viewers of the 1950's who probably desired some kind of explanation for the disaster of Stalingrad and the Nazi era.
As an anti-war film this film is a failure; as a shoot 'em up action war film it is droll. All in all this is less satisfying than a made for TV movie of the same period.

4 out of 5 stars The definitive Stalingrad movie has not yet been made.......2005-07-19

This gets a 4 star under doubt. [German version]

Frank Wisbar spent the 1930s in the States and most of WWII there too. When he caught up on the theme of WWII in Germany in the late 1950's he did so without the causcious guilt many of his politically tainted countrymen posessed.

Where "Enemy at the Gates" is an embarrassing performance tumpets and bravado, "Stalingrad" a show of German theatrical performance, "Hünde, wollt ihr ewig leben" almost comes down to the level of "I say chaps, Stalingrad is awfully chilly, hm?"...

However, as for sticking to historical facts it scores. It touches in on the German arrogance and prejudice even against her own allies. Anecdotes of how things aren't right are sometimes played down to subtile hints which is almost unusual in German films. Modern German directors, please take notes here...

The relatively low budgets on battle scenes in spite, this is a good movie with a even pace towards the end. If you like the old school war movies and would like to see a German view, this is worth the time. But keep in mind that Wisbar didn't make full use of his material - Read Beevor to catch up on events, and "As far as my feet will carry me"/"So weit die Füsse tragen" (Clemens Forell) about life/dispair in the Soviet POW camps after the war. I recommend the 08/15 series for a movie look at the Germans in WWII. Why on Gods green planet isn't it released on DVD to an English language audience?

PS: the German villain is well played by Wolgang Preiss. Oddly enough, as the battle of Stalingrad begun he enjoyed his fame in the role as a dashing nazi pilot hero in "Die Grosse Liebe" (1942).

4 out of 5 stars Much better than the PC remake.......2005-04-28

What is interesting about "Stalingrad: Dogs, do you want to live forever?" (1958) is how much better it is than the color remake "Stalingrad" (1993) made by the producers of "Das Boot."

I saw the latter film first and was deeply disappointed by it. It is an excruciatingly long and depressing antiwar screed choked with post-war self hatred and guilt, and the last hour is almost unwatchable. The producers obviously had a political agenda and carried it out at the expense of such minor things as the historical truth or watchability. I'd rather watch "Born on the Fourth of July" a half-dozen times than sit through "Stalingrad" again.

"Dogs" is a superior film in almost every way, and I would recommend it over the remake despite the outrageous price of $45 bucks (maybe you can get it used). It tells the story of an officer named Wisse who has just recovered from a slight wound and has been assigned as the liason to a Rumanian division north of Stalingrad. Wisse is tough, able, honest, humane and cool-headed under fire, and quickly earns the respect of both his Rumanian allies and his German subordinates. Unfortunately, his timing is bad: it's November, the the Red Army has just launched the offensive which will trap the German Sixth Army inside Stalingrad.

"Dogs" alternates the story of Wisse's struggles with his men's morale, the Russian winter, the Red Army, and his cowardly and devious superior, Col. Linkmann, with scenes from Hitler's headquarters explaining the Fuhrer's "rationale" (if you can call a completely irrational decision by that name) for refusing permission for the Sixth Army to break out. It also details the attempt by von Manstein to relieve the city. The film relies a bit too much on newsreel footage to pad out its limited budget, and there is a rather obvious sub-plot involving a cute Russian female, but the battle scenes are very well executed and the acting is better (in my opinion) than some of the other reviewers here indicate.

Unlike the "antiofficer" films and books which became so popular after the war, "Dogs" puts Wisse in a heroic light as a man who leads by example and cannot be turned away from what he percieves as his duty, even when common sense tells him all is lost. It is this attitude that separates "Dogs" from "Stalingrad," where the moral and ethical collapse of the soldiers is complete (for a firsthand account that vindicates "Dogs'" version of events, read the unpublished memiors of Col. Dingler as reproduced in F.W. von Mellenthin's seminal "Panzer Battles" available on this site, q.v. my review of that book if you care!). Interestingly, the film seems to take a certain amount of pride (in a subtle way) with German military accomplishments and dciscipline without endorsing the war or Nazi ideology: the basic message is that these men were just doing their jobs as they saw them, and Hitler committed the ultimate betrayal by exploiting their sense of duty and squandering their lives. One could argue that it glosses over the atrocious German treatment of Russian civilains, but "Dogs" is meant to be a war story and not a cinematic expiation of national guilt. On that level it succeeds. If you saw "Stalingrad" you should defintely give "Dogs" a try; if you didn't, you might want to watch this version first.

5 out of 5 stars Joe Henderson front and center.......2004-10-27

Lenny White's introduction of his bandmates as 'The World's Greatest Musicians' is no exaggeration - this music performance is indeed special, and as the previous reviewer mentioned is a perfect place for newcomers to begin exploring modern acoustic jazz. [there is also another, separate DVD available - released four years ago - of Corea playing acoustic music: "Chick Corea & Friends: Remembering Bud Powell" (live 1996).]

This concert was video taped at Wolf & Rissmiller's Country Club in Reseda, California [not Tokyo, Japan as the previous review states] in 1982.

as mentioned in the other review, this DVD video focuses on Return To Forever music and musicians - but without electric instruments. The Chick Corea/Stanley Clarke/Lenny White section reunites from early-mid '70s album classics such as Stanley Clarke's "Children Of Forever" and RTF's "Hymn Of The Seventh Galaxy".

Tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson had worked with each of these musicians in various jazz contexts for many years before this 1982 reunion. Clarke and White had appeared on Henderson's own 1970-71 Milestone label albums "In Pursuit Of Blackness" and "If You're Not Part Of The Solution, You're Part Of The Problem" (memorably with Lenny White and trumpeter Woody Shaw on a smoking Sept. 1970 live at The Lighthouse session). White and Henderson also famously appeared together on Freddie Hubbard's "Red Clay" [CTI label, 1970] album. Corea and Henderson had worked together on recordings such as "Mirror, Mirror" [MPS label 1980, w/Ron Carter and Billy Higgins], "Relaxin' At Camarillo" [Contemporary label 1979, w/Peter Erskine and Tony Williams], and a great 1981 set "Live In Montreux" [Corea's own Stretch label, w/Gary Peacock and Roy Haynes].

Henderson is prominently featured on three of the tracks (he sits out for the trio to perform Corea's '500 Miles High'), giving a beautiful glimpse of his blues-inflected playing on Clarke's composition 'Why Wait', extended improvisation on 'Guernica' (Clarke - bowed bass), and his tour-de-force technique on the swift opener 'L's Bop' (which Lenny White - who co-produced the audio on this recording - closes with a bravura drum solo). Each musician is joyfully sensitive and alert to one another throughout the set; a display of jazz improvisational magic at its finest.

as a 'special feature' this DVD includes an enlightening interview with its director, Gary Legon. Legon outlines his role in being asked, on short notice, by [then Elektra/Musician, today Blue Note] record producer Bruce Lundvall to video tape a reunion of RTF-era jazz musicians on their current tour. The Corea/Clarke/Henderson/White lineup was being billed at the time as 'Echoes Of An Era', and the Musician label released a few LPs of this group featuring: Freddie Hubbard, trumpet, and Chaka Khan, vocal on one, Nancy Wilson, vocal [sans Hubbard and Khan] on another, and a third called "The Griffith Park Collection" [slyly announced by Chick in this video as their current release]. Three (or possibly four?) cameras were employed; audio was done as a digital, two-track live recording. Legon also explains those funky, casual threads worn by the musicians: an airport snow delay and their last-minute arrival to the gig.

A passionate set of jazz for your DVD music library - enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars PRE-AKOUSTIC BAND COREA.......2004-01-29

Before the CHICK COREA AKOUSTIC BAND, Chick Corea was writing and performing acoustic music. To my knowledge this is the first concert of Chick Corea playing acoustic music on DVD. This quartet is particularly impressive seeing that it has 3/4 of the Corea led Return To Forever. RTF did perform acoustic music but this group is closer to jazz/bebop than RTF ever was. Chick Corea is joined by RTF veterans Lenny White on Drums and Stanley Clarke on bass as well as Joe Henderson on Tenor Saxophone. The result is a set of acoustic jazz that is, at times, amazing and always engaging. Once again, I wish that I had the 4 1/2 star option or that the star rating was 1-10 instead of 1-5. However, I don't so I am going with 4 instead of 5 but I deliberated for a while on that.
The show is only about an hour long, but what an hour it is. Joe Henderson is a very good tenor sax player and is impressive at times on this disc. Lenny White shows that he can play drums in a non-electric setting. Lenny is solid throughout but doesn't do anything mind boggling like Dave Weckl does on the Akoustic Band CDs. Chick Corea shows why he is THE keyboard virtuoso/composer of the last 30 years. Stanley Clarke is Stanley Clarke. If you have never heard/seen Stanley play the acoustic bass then you are going to be blown away. The interplay between himself and Corea or White is amazing. Stanley Clarke knows how to link the melody and rhythm together and when he solos, look out. At long last, a chance to see Stanley on DVD.
The DVD is one set from the band, captured live in Tokyo, Japan in 1982. The music sounds as if the Akoustic band hired a Saxophone player to join them. The tunes are very similar to the Akoustic band in tonality/style although the saxophone adds a new dimension. The set includes only 4 songs so you know that it is heavy on improvisation. This is post-bop jazz. The band, as a whole, soars and Chick and Stanley are amazing. All of the songs are bop-influened. They also contain elements of othere jazz influences, most notably Chick Corea's '500 Miles High'. '500 Miles High' is the highlight for me. Henderson sits this song out and the trio performs another latin influeced Corea composition. The magic of RTF is revisited as all 3 are given space to do their thing. The interplay picks up from where Romantic Warrior left off. During this piece Stanley Clarke takes upright bass playing to unparalled heights. The Coltranesque technique that he plays on electric is unleashed on acoustic. Nobody plays upright like Stanley.
In conclusion, if you are familiar with Chick Corea's impressive acoustic catalog and you like what you've heard; then you'll also like this. IF you are a fusion fan and haven't yet begun to listen to bebop or straight jazz then this would be a good place to start. It has all of the elements that make acoustic jazz what it is. The disc is only an hour long, but it is a quality hour. Another found jem that has come to DVD at last.

5 out of 5 stars Warm concert in the rain.......2006-06-29

What a great dvd this is. Dionne comes across as being very natural and warm in nature. I am sure if it wasn't pouring down with rain, there would have been more audience participation. The backing band is sensational. This is a very enjoyable concert from a very professional entertainer and polished vocalist.

5 out of 5 stars The track suit was just fine and ..... proper.......2006-03-10

I saw this concert and admired every second of Dionne's performance, not to mention the backstage stuff. I enjoyed the duet practice part of David and Dionne where they had to laugh laugh and laugh.

The track suit was just right for the night. Could you imagine staring at Dionne singing at the top of her lungs in a cold, wet, jazz fest wearing an "evening gown" which could have exposed her to .... pneumonia after the concert??? It was a perfect decision to let her wear the track suit (she even looked ten years younger in that suit) to keep her warm thru the that night. This DVD is one's collector's item.

What can you say about a performer who has done it all, and with Class. No other performer in music history has accomplished so much and has influenced so many! This DVD is a must have for any music lover and after 40 years she sounds fantastic and so does her son, David Elliot. The artists of today can learn a thing or two from this icon! Here's to Dionne and i am 'wishing and hoping' for another follow up DVD!

5 out of 5 stars Dionne Now!!.......2004-12-22

This is a great Dionne concert! The picture and sound quality is fantastic!!! This is Dionne Now... Dionne's voice has changed, it's deeper and her range is not as strong as it used to be..still Dionne's sounds great on this DVD and her band and the arrangements are great! Dionne was celebrating her 40th anniversary in music for the taping of this concert and her son David joins her for three numbers, i think in time he'll be a better singer...he tends to belt too much for me. With a career and catalog like Dionne's there is no way she can include all the hits or rarely sung lp cuts..hopefully soon Dionne will do another DVD and dig deeper into her vast catalog and perform more of her songs from the 70's and 80's, 90's.

Sean Connery casts a long shadow over the James Bond legacy. He created the movie persona and starred in six of the first seven features, all but establishing the cool cold warrior as the world's most suave secret agent. The second Bond collection celebrates the Connery Bond with three of his classics, including From Russia with Love, 007's second and perhaps finest outing. A blond, buff Robert Shaw plays Bond's most ruthless nemesis, and Lotte Lenya and the great Pedro Armindáriz costar in this sleek, high-energy trip through the Iron Curtain. Connery travels to the Far East in You Only Live Twice, which introduces the international criminal conspiracy SPECTRE and its cat-loving mastermind, Blofeld (Donald Pleasence). After a brief retirement, Connery returned for Diamonds Are Forever, his final "official" appearance in the Bond series (15 years later he played Bond for a rival studio's Never Say Never Again). This more tongue-in-cheek adventure takes 007 to Las Vegas, where he battles Blofeld (this time played by Charles Gray) and his minions--namely, a pair of fey, sardonic henchmen and a team of bikini-clad karate killers.

Roger Moore took over the role and his fourth effort was Moonraker, a misguided sci-fi entry that takes Bond to space for a physically impressive but dramatically lackluster adventure with Richard Kiel's steel-dentured Jaws. After that brief digression, For Your Eyes Only returned Bond to globetrotting high adventure and teamed him with his most endearing ally (Topol as a gregarious smuggler). The torch was passed to Timothy Dalton in The Living Daylights, an attempt to clear away the camp elements of Moore's portrayal and return to a lean, hard-edged spy thriller for the post-cold war era. It lacks the larger-than-life characters and spectacle of previous Bond pictures, but Dalton was a tough, ruthless 007 and a worthy inheritor of the legacy, which was then passed on to Pierce Brosnan. In The World Is Not Enough, Bond takes on post-Soviet geopolitics, with Robert Carlyle as the villainous Renard and Sophie Marceau and Denise Richards as love objects.

2 out of 5 stars Good Set, but Wow $$$$.......2006-11-29

Let me start off by saying that this collection has some good points. Those good points are From Russia with Love, a great Sean Connery movie, For Your Eyes Only which a pretty good Roger Moore film, and (many may disagree with me on this one) my favorite Brosnan Bond, The World is Not Enough. The other films in this collection are ok, but I don't think there is any film in the Bond series that I really dislike. Now that being said, DON'T PURCHASE THIS SET. I don't know who the people are that are reviewing this with 5 stars and saying great low price, but I wonder if they are the ones trying to sell them. My problems with this set is the picture and sound quality. They are what you would expect on a movie from the era each film was produced. The older Connery Bond movies look like your watching them on 1960's film. The other problem I have with these sets are the prices. To purchase this set used will cost you about $170, the price new is over $200. There is no reason to pay that much for this set. I would recommend if you are looking for the Bond collection to purchase the Ultimate Editions (UEs). The movies have been restored so picture quality is great. The UEs are also set in 5.1 surround sound, and the special features are great. Also the price of the UE compared to this set is a lot better, when you consider that you can purchase all 4 of the UE for about the same price this Vol 2 will cost you. In sort if you want the Bond movies, buy the Ultimate Editions.

3 out of 5 stars 3 Repeats in This Series!!!.......2006-09-04

I just bought James Bond Collection, Vol. 2 for my brother and much to my surprise found that THREE of the titles were also in Vol. 1 of the series (which he has). What a rip-off! Paid over $100.00 for 3 new discs. Very disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars A great mix of Bond movies.......2006-08-19

This is my favorite of the 3 Special Edition boxsets. For one thing, it's got 3 great Connery movies: "From Russia With Love" (007 tries to get a Russian decoding machine while surviving a SPECTRE trap); "You Only Live Twice" (007 in Japan must take on SPECTRE, which has been kidnapping spaceships to start war between the USSR and the USA); and "Diamonds Are Forever" (classic Connery 007, in Las Vegas tracking a diamond smuggling trail that leads to Blofeld). I find all those Connery ones entertaining, and YOLT and DAF are two of my personnal favorites, both very entertaining and with great settings. Next, there are two Roger Moore flicks: "Moonraker" (007 goes onto a space station to stop a madman from destroying the world); and "For Your Eyes Only" (007 must recover a stolen piece of technology). "Moonraker" is a bit silly, but I'll admit I find it to be entertaining and I enjoy it more than most Moore films. And "FYEO" is my favorite Moore film, the most hard edged and realistic. There's also a Timothy Dalton film, "The Living Daylights" (007 must stop a group of Soviet renegades from smuggling heroin). It's Dalton's first film, and he's my second favorite, next to Connery. Dalton's Bond is more dark and serious, yet "TLD" is still a good thriller. Finally, there's Pierce Brosnan's third outing, "The World Is Not Enough" (007 tries to stop a nuclear sub exploding and destroying much of the world's oil supply). "TWINE" is one of Brosnan's best, certainly better than his first two. Overall this boxset contains some of the lightest Bond movies, and some of the darkest, offering a good variety of styles and a good variety of Bonds.

1 out of 5 stars Holy be-jesus..........2005-11-19

For all the positive reviews, am I the only one who noticed that the cheapest you can get one of this box set for amounts to over $25 a movie? Maybe its just because it the holiday season and due to the amount of shopping impressed upon me at this time of year, but it occurs to me that this is rather outrageous.

5 out of 5 stars JB Ultimate Edit... mi6.co.uk.......2005-09-21

For any James Bond fan. If this superb collection of James Bond DVDs weren't enough for you; there is good news coming your way. SONY and MGM are planning to re-release all twenty(20) of the James Bond Movies to DVD in (what they're calling) The James Bond Ultimate Edition DVD Collection. Straight official article from mi6.co.uk Here is the link:

http://www.mi6.co.uk/sections/articles/dvd_ultimate_editions.php3?=&s=

These new Ultimate Edition DVDS are due in Q32006 coinciding with the release of Casino Royale (21st James Bond Film). These DVD releases are gonna be one of the top DVD projects of 2006!

Picture Quality? They are using Imagica Machines; which are ultra-sophisticated digital film-scanners. One frame every four seconds, which is how long it takes Imagica to scan across the frame 4,000 times. The Imagica they are using creates digital replicas of the frame consisting 4,000 horizontal lines of data. The process is called 4K scanning. It's gonna look sharper than ever; believe it.

Sound Quality? The Company Mi Casa has chosen the brand new Bryston SP 1.7 multichannel preamplifirer/processors for to use in the James Bond remastering project. Although you'll be able to switch back to the original traditional mono sound track if you desire.

Extra special features? Brand New Documentaries and new special bonus material; plus cast and crew intervies from the past 42 years. Including rare and previously seen footage from the productions. Also newly added, Roger Moore has just recorded his commentary tracks for his seven bond films.

I just can't wait. Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan (my favorite Bond) coming back to DVD in the best action spy adventures; the best collection yet.

So they're out next year in 2006. Probably October, with the release of Casino Royale who'll once again being directed by Martin Campbell (GoldenEye). Theatrical Release Date October 19th, 2006.

5 out of 5 stars Tongue-in-cheek documentary slams the Gallagher brothers and their whole pretence........2006-12-29

This is a great documentary, very sly, subtle and informative. Made up of interviews with prominent bandmembers from the Britpop scene it documents the rise and fall of the Britpop phenomenon. It also shows, via interviews with Damon Albarn, how a fairly good band - Blur - can be brought low by its own hubris and by a popular perception that the band was 'not authentic enough'. It also shows, via interviews with Noel and Liam Gallagher, how another fairly good band - the Beatles tribute band Oasis - can be so over-hyped that the bandmembers end up in Cloud-Cookooland thinking they're geniuses and working class heroes when in reality they've become multi-millionaires of musical mediocrity living in mansions, with about as much in common with the working class as Bertie Wooster has with Jeeves. Also covered is the manipulation of Britpop and Oasis by New Labour. The whole thing is tied together using interviews with Louise Wener (the lead singer of Sleeper) who gives her perceptive thoughts on the Britpop phenomenon.

It seems that many here think this documentary is a homage to Oasis. I saw it very differently. When we see Gallagher in his mansion talking about himself being authentic working class it should become clear to everyone that the documentary is poking subtle fun at him and criticising the whole contrived Oasis vs. Blur 'battle of the bands' working class vs. upper crust thing. I mean get a clue folks! The whole thing is hilarious - the Gallagher brothers must be high as a kite if they think their current situation makes them the salt of the Earth to anyone but those whose brain capacity is on a par with Blackadder's Baldrick or Monty Python's Mr. Gumby. At least Damon Albarn realises he was played for a patsy - I don't think the Gallaghers really know, but then again why would they care? After all, they made out on the deal.

By the way, the Oasis tribute band Wonderwall had me in stitches - I mean a clueless tribute band paying tribute to a clueless tribute band. It's classic!

An awesome documentary with a lot to say about how the Gallaghers betrayed their roots while still thinking they never left them. Honestly Gallaghers, get a clue - when you get mansions and Rolls-Royces you have to give up your claim to the working class mantle. You're nouveau riche - deal with it.

4 out of 5 stars I thought this was a decent perspective and EXTREMELY entertaining.......2006-01-11

If you enjoy the music of Oasis, Blur, Pulp, the Verve, this DVD will be entertaining. Granted some of its theories revolving the BritPop movement seem overextended, it still provides a bit of entertainment. You might not agree with some of the theories, but its still worth a listen. Anyway, the DVD devotes a most of its time to the 3 biggest bands at the time : Oasis, Blur, and Pulp. (Well, I guess the Verve should also be included, but I doubt the reclusive Richard Ashcroft was willing to give an interview). The DVD is worth a go just for the great MUSIC, the hilarious (and on-the-spot) GALLAGHER Bros. interviews, and Jarvis' insight. BTW, Damon Albarn comes off as a real tool.
Its also interesting that they interviewed two delusional members of an Oasis tribute band. I'm still baffled by that one.

5 out of 5 stars I agree with the first reviewer..........2005-12-14

Noel and Liam and Jarvis are f*&king hilarious...Damon needs to off himself...same with the weirdo journalist with the upper-class accent...this video is good at making Britpop seem like an actual period in music...hahahahaha...whatever...besides, everyone knows Radiohead and Prodigy were quite accepted in the U.S. and were very original...Oasis is an awesome, lethal rock n roll band, anyone who loves rock n roll have to love Oasis...don't cheat yourself...

4 out of 5 stars wot brit pop/rock is all about.......2005-11-05

it does capture the essence of the era...that being the 80s-90s of the brit pop/rock era. its a cliffnote version of the times with the well noted stars of the brit music business, noel and liam gallagher(luv ya blokes) as usual are dead on and funny as hell, damon of blur, the guy from pulp(too ugly to remember his name) and many more. i gave it 4 stars because it was an in depth look at the rise and fall of "swinging london and reigning brit rock" interesting, but i must say i took away that 5th star because they booed at all the american music...giving the impression that all of british rock was superior, when all of it is not...i've heard alot of brit music and i must admit alot of it is good and alot of it is rubbish as well. overall my 4 stars recommend this film to music lovers.

4 out of 5 stars Maybe it will live forever ..........2005-08-31

I was in college when the Brit Pop phenomena hit. But I was a snob back then, deeply involved in my college radio station and turning my nose up at this tripe. Oh that was just too mainstream and commercial for ME to like! Of course I've since matured, and I gave Brit Pop a chance since then, and this documentary taught me a few things I otherwise didn't know.

There is a curious phenomena that takes place between America and the UK in terms of pop culture. One gentleman made a comment about a pendulum swing back and forth between the two, and that is certainly true now that I think about it. I had heard of The Stone Roses, but they never caught on with avengence here. Then, of course, Nirvana happened and eclipsed everything else. After Kurt died in 94, Oasis began to rise and the UK's "grunge years" began. I heard stories about all the kids in the UK chasing after Oasis and their packed, sold out shows, and a new chapter began.

This documentary concentrates mostly on the Gallagher brothers. Noel is far more well spoken than Liam (but everyone knows that because I don't think he's spent nearly as much time pickling himself), everything Noel said seemed to have more meaning behind it. They interviewed a few more people, such as Damien from Blur and the guy from Pulp. Damien seems like a real downer, they should've given the guy from Pulp more of a say as he seemed a little more animated than Blur. I liked the Beatles vs. Rolling Stones - type rivalry established against Blur and Oasis (seeing whose album would hit #1 first), but you can tell that they really weren't interested and it was a creation by the press. Plus, you got the impression that London was swinging again like the mods in the 60s.

It is a little ironic that they too fell into the same traps that we did in America with the death of grunge. Heroin too had them in their grasp (referencing Blur's song "BeetleBum", as it was supposed to be about heroin). And, a celebrity death ended their trip as well (ours was Kurt's, theirs was Princess Diana).

Here it is 10 years later. Blur and Pulp seem to have gone the way of the dodo, but Oasis is still around. They're not the hot phenomena they were, but they continue to make music and seem to have staying power (when they're not fighting or drunk/high). Now Coldplay seems to be the one leading the Brit Pop charge. Maybe they will, in fact, live forever.

3 out of 5 stars Just a refresher.......2007-05-26

This information is everything you've heard a million times before. I'm not saying its not useful, it's just nothing groundbreaking by any means. Eat right and relax is the basic message of the seminar. It is worth watching if you need to re-center yourself, I took some notes while watching it to make some basic guidelines for myself. When he says "Food isnt meant to make you feel good, its meant to be good for you," my girlfriend quit watching. Way too many ugly old people in the audience too... this is kinda an old folks video. But at 10 bucks its not too awful.

5 out of 5 stars LIVE TO 150 !?!.......2006-03-30

This documentary/seminar is an excellent discussion of how nearly EVERYONE is killing themselves prematurely. Then it provides realistic solutions for stress, exercise, and diet.

Indeed, Gary makes a good case that we are killing ourselves off...even halving our lives (thus the 150 potential life span).

And if the idea of this documentary giving you 75 more years, what if it just gives you one more year. Wouldn't that be worth viewing it?
