Description
This feature documentary covers the stories of six young men who have just become part of a "Real World-esque" Internet show. Over the course of a week cameras delve into the often conflicted souls of this eclectic group. Through new friendships and forming animosities, these young men explore the darkness, freedom, joy and the adventure of "Burning Man", the infamous alternative art festival in Nevada, and come out questioning the roles they play in their daily lives.

A surprise hit in America, this 1994 Australian comedy is anchored by Terence Stamp as a transsexual who, in the company of two drag queens, travels to a remote desert location to put on a lip- synch performance--to the amazement of the locals. Getting there on a pink bus named Priscilla, the trio stop and play for people all over the Outback, getting the same homophobic, bewildered responses. The weak link in the film is dialogue that seems to have been pulled from "Queer Movie Banter for Dummies," all bitchy and cliché-ridden but fortunately salvaged by strong acting. The most fun comes whenever the three are performing; fans of Abba will be particularly pleased. The DVD release has optional full-screen and widescreen presentations, cast and crew bios, optional French and Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

Watch Director Stephan Elliot talk about the film's iconic costumes. |
An Interview with Priscilla Costume Designer Tim Chappel
How much of costume design is your own inspiration / how much is inspired by the character?
I rarely have creative free reign like I had on Priscilla. Priscilla was one of those rare situations where the powers that be said "Go for it". The characters are my babies. All design is meant to build character and help move the story along. Fortunately Mitzi, Felacia, and Bernardette were outrageous drag queens so that was not only easy bit great fun. Hard as it may seem, there are nuances that aren't obvious. For example when the queens are climbing Kings Canyon each of their headdresses are a distillation of their individual personalities. Bernardette is the Evil Queen, Mizti has lipsticks, rollers and pacifiers, and Felecia has Cupie dolls that are staring at themselves in little mirrors.
What is the process of physically rendering the costumes? Do you build them by hand? Work with a team? Hit vintage stores?
I usually begin by sketching roughs. Then once everyone has had their input - or cocked their leg as it seems more of the time, I do the finished sketches. These get signed off on literally becoming a visual contract. Then they get handed to the Costumier that builds a toile (a practice one). That gets fitted on the talent and we all um and ah--hopefully more ooh and ah if it's working well. Then we have a second fitting to perfect the fit and a final fitting to see the final project.
On Priscilla however I simply grabbed whatever I had around or worked out which costume could be sacrificed and started gluing and sewing and hoping for the best. If something started to break there was always the hot glue gun and a handful of glitter to disguise any lumps and bumps. The costumes were literally finished when they would tear them out of my hands.
Did any of the actors on Priscilla have any costume concerns? Was anyone concerned the costume would overpower their performance?
The actors were all good sports. Terence told us he wanted to look like Holly Golightly but he soon gave up on that idea. He actually looked quite beautiful at times I thought. There was a moment at Kings Canyon when Terrence said that something was bothering his forward and I looked over to see a single drop of blood run down his brow--whoops, with only $12,000 US there was no room for comfort.
What's the difference between cinematic fashion and street (real people) fashion? I.e., does it have to be "bigger" if it's on the screen?
There are lots of differences between what you wear on the street, on stage, or in stills. Each medium requires special attention. For example in film you have to find out what kind of film stock is being used, what kind of filters and the general visual feel that the production designer and cinematographer are trying to go for. Of course the Director is trying to convey very specific ideas and using texture, color and contrast your job is to build, along with your team, that visual statement.
The use of detail is also vital; sometimes you can't even see it but the actor will know its there and much detail, even though you can't literally see it, becomes absorbed in a more subconscious way.
In your opinion, who looked the most beautiful (lead roles) in drag, who was the most fun to work with?
They were all beauties. Guy Pearce had a background in musical theatre so he was prone to stealing the show. They were all great fun and still people I count as good friends.
Any idea the film would take off to become an enormous hit and cult classic as well as meaning so much to fans around the world?
We thought we were basically making a home movie; it wasn't until we had the 15-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival that we knew we had created a DRAG MONSTER!
Where did you get the inspiration and know-how regarding costumes? Was there research involved? How did you get involved in doing this movie?
I started with the music and let it send me in a delirious creative free fall and took notes as I spun. We got to have a buying trip to NYC in '92--WOW. I got to meet Girlina and Lasdy Bunny and all the voguing Queens--we were doing something totally different but Queens are trick everywhere aren't they.
I got involved because Stephan needed a Costume designer who could do everything: design, sew and wear--if necessary. I was working as one of a pair of male backup dancers (an "earring") for a drag-queen troupe called Glamourworld. I used to make all our costumes and we were pretty successful. We even toured Asia going to Hong Kong, Shanghai and Ho Chi Mihn city--all on DragOn Air. How funny is that?
What inspires you--what movies stand out to you as having great costumes?
It all goes in and just comes out this way. I don't consciously look for inspiration. I like to think of myself as a creative distillery.
If you could dress Oscar (of the Academy Awards) - what would you have him wear?
My Oscar was on display in Australia's National Gallery in an Exhibition called "The Sights and Sounds of Australian Film." Oscar had purple hair and a disco tube dress. I butchered a Rock and Roll Barbie. She didn't seem to mind 'cause Oscar looked roool perty! |

Description
They came. They conquered. They looked fabulous. This wonderfully inventive, visually stunning and incomparably funny Australian import about three drag performers braving the vast, rugged outback won the 1994 Academy Award(r) for Costume Design. Veteran actor Terence Stamp (Star Wars: The Phantom Menace), Hugo Weaving (The Matrix), Guy Pearce (L.A. Confidential) all give hilarious ? and heartfelt ? performances in a three-fishes-outta-water story that's "one of the wildest movies ever made" (Rex Reed, New York Observer)! With a contract to perform a drag show way out in the Australian desert, Tick (Weaving), Adam (Pearce) and Ralph (Stamp) each has his own reason for wanting to leave the safety of Sydney. Christening their battered pink tour bus "Priscilla," this wickedly funny and high-drama trio head for the Outback...and into crazy adventures in even crazier outfits. You go, girls!
Customer Reviews:
Slightly disappointed.......2007-07-05
It was great to hear the director talk about his runaway hit, but i couldn't help feeling disappointed that the interviews included neither Hugo Weaving nor Guy Pearce.
For G-d's sake Felicia! Take that frock off!.......2007-07-05
From the first notes of the opening song, "Never Been To Me" and the bizzare looking person dancing on the stage, you may think, "What have I got myself into?" But soon you realize you are about to meet, and get to know, a set of fascinating, fun and utterly outlandish characters. This Australian made road movie is like non-other before it's time. The band of misfits may make some wrong turns in their "Budget Barbie Camper" on their way to perform at a Casino in Alice Springs, but they also learn some things along they way. Of course there are a few surprises as well. Music fans will enjoy the wide array of songs used throughout the film. The Oscar winning costumes are each more amazing than the last as are the hard hitting quips from the guys who "dress up in women's clothes and lip synch to other people's songs."
A really wonderful film when it was realeased in the early 90's and it still is today. The message of tollerance is still very relevant.
I highly recommend this new edition of the DVD as it contains some "Extra Frills" as the box will tell you.
A must see.......2007-06-27
This is a great movie and a must see. This is much better then what was on TV. Better color and like the extra parts not shown on TV.
must see.......2007-05-24
The original To Wong Foo, really worth a spin. Terrance Stamp and cast are good for a laugh.Drags a bit in spots (pardon the pun), but worth it just to see the costumes, better yet the Aussie wit.
Hugo Weaving is adorable!.......2007-04-16
This is a great movie if you're into this sort of thing. I'm a fan of Rocky Horror and Hedwig and the Angry Inch so I like to add this to the list. Although all three are very different they each have great music. I love the character interaction. Everyone seems to be so comfortable. Great movie!

Let's Sing Some More.......2007-06-11
My 4 year old enjoys music. So, this classic was worth buying. He really likes trying to sing and dance to (Dem Bones) while watching the animation. Fun for the entire family.
Super DVD!.......2007-06-09
My three year old adores this DVD. (As well as my older kids, but they won't admit it!). He asks to watch it every single day. Each song/story is beautiful and captivating in it's own way. The only story he doesn't like is the "Chinese Violin"; it just doesn't interest him. (I'm not crazy about it, either). The arrangement on "Wheels On The Bus" is especially awesome, I find myself humming it all day.
The kids love it!.......2007-05-07
This is definately my kids favorite video. They are 1 and 2 years old.
Favorite books come to life.......2007-02-26
I'm a special ed teacher for K-1 and my students love these videos. They add a visual depth to these classic stories. Don't forget to view the extras and you can also have the words displayed as well. I find them invaluable for illuminating literature. Most stories are no more than 7-10 minutes long and so are great for getting students involved quickly. Well worth the price. Students ask for them over and over again. Get the books too and students begin to engage with the books and get excited keeping up with the video.
The only DVD you will ever need.......2007-01-26
Wow, what a surprise this DVD was. Not only did it start with my daughters favorite song and story " The Wheels on the bus" but the list went on and on. 'Dem Bones, Over in the Meadow, There was and Old Lady Who swallowed a fly. Then the stories..."I Want a Dog" is so cute. My daughter, 2 1/2 copies the whole DVD and gets better every day. And my son 6 loves the DVD just as much. They are not fighting over which DVD to choose and I finally have a break from Barney.

The rough-edged vitality of contemporary Irish filmmaking is readily apparent in Intermission, a deliriously ambitious black comedy in which 54 characters and 11 plotlines compete for consistently impressive screen-time. In a dazzling display of audacity, screenwriter Mark O'Rowe and first-time director John Crowley jump from one plot to another, tangling their characters in an infectious series of intersecting events, shifting from scenes of brutal violence, poignant compassion, and richly dark humor, and somehow managing to make it all fit together in a miraculously coherent tapestry of romance, crime, and authentic Dublin atmosphere. Colin Farrell and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine alumnus Colm Meaney are the familiar stars here, and they're in peak form on native soil, but the entire cast shines in equal measure, all of them playing malcontents striving for something better in a world that's simultaneously harsh and hilarious. From start to finish, Intermission is so full of surprises that you'll want to see it twice, just to marvel at the way its puzzle fits together. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Fifty-four characters and eleven storylines intersect with "dazzling" (San Francisco Chronicle) results in this "raucously funny and compellingly gritty" (BBCi) comedy. An ingenious tale of small-town delinquents, shady cops and warring lovers reunited by a bizarre kidnapping plan, Intermission is a dark, edgy, "very funny study of love, lust and petty crime" (Sight & Sound)!
Customer Reviews:
Nothing original, but good fun.......2007-06-21
Although this movie was advertised as being a new break out independent movie, it's not as original as the filmmakers would have you believe. It's main gimmick is that it features a bunch of different stories which intersect with each other at various points, such as you have already seen in "Love Actually" or "Crash" or a million different other movies.
That being said, it's not a bad little movie. I had quite a few laughs during the course of it, and, although it's not a new trick, it is always fun to see the stories intersect with each other.
Because of the cynical take this film has on love and relationships, it struck me as kind of a darker version of "Love Actually". However most of the characters still arrive at some sort of a happy ending.
As a former Star Trek fan, I particularly enjoyed Colm Meaney playing a tough guy police man with a fondness for Celtic music. Funny thing: Colm Meaney's Star Trek character, Miles O'Brien, was easily the most bland and boring character in both "The Next Generation" and "Deep Space Nine." But Colm Meaney himself can be a great actor, as seen in this movie, and also "Snapper" (another independent Irish movie that I saw on Eion's recommendation a few years back). Obviously the Star Trek writers did not know how to use him to his fullest potential.
LONDONDERRY HILLS COP.......2007-04-16
John Crowley's first movie, INTERMISSION, earned four IFTA awards, the Irish equivalent to the Oscars, in 2003 : Best Irish Film, Best Director, Best Script (Mark O'Rowe) and Best Supporting Actor (David Wilmot). Most of the actors of the film are well-known to the international audience, Cillian Batman Begins (Widescreen Edition) Murphy, Brian F. Million Dollar Baby (Two-Disc Special Edition) O'Byrne, David Laws of Attraction Wilmot, Kelly Nanny McPhee (Widescreen Edition) Macdonald, Colm Con Air Meaney, and, of course, Colin Farrell had already crossed the Atlantic ocean when they were brought together to shoot INTERMISSION in Ireland.
INTERMISSION is a kind of serious comedy. I mean serious because certain scenes of the movie wouldn't take place in a light family comedy. I'm referring here particularly to the first scene of the film when Colin Farrell, before robbing her, hits the face of a charming young girl he had seduced, or to the interventions of the cop Colm Meaney whose Dirty Harry behaviour is more than questionable. Funny, yes INTERMISSION is funny at times but the film tends rather most of the time to the social description of today Ireland.
A DVD zone back to homeland.
Good Movie.......2007-03-09
Well acted, good story line, not a typical dull, stupid Hollywood type movie. Oops maybe because it's not a Hollywood movie it's and Irish movie. Go Irish. Colin has nothing on Cillian. Good movie to buy you won't be dissappointed.
Entertaining.......2007-03-08
Life not typical of the Irish, but another Cillian Murphy movie who completely out shines Colin Farrell.
Not to bad.......2007-01-16
I first so this movie when I was living in Ireland so I decide to buy it, it is funny if you know something about the Irish people.

Prolific director Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X) offers the fictionalized account of the pilgrimages black men all across the country made to the Million Man March in Washington, D.C., and the process showcases a fine ensemble cast of eclectic actors. Shot in a fast-paced low-budget style, the film chronicles a bus trip beginning in Los Angeles and the passengers, all from vastly divergent ages, backgrounds, and beliefs, getting to know one another and discussing their respective reasons for making the trip. The group, including a gay couple, a father and his son, a cop, and an actor, each confront the hostilities and prejudices they have faced as well as the ones they hold within themselves. And along the road they encounter incidents that bring into sharp focus the need they feel to acknowledge their heritage and shared struggle. Frequently entertaining in its rapid pace and cutting dialogue, this small but ambitious effort is sure to provoke debate even as it entertains. --Robert Lane

Good Intentions Aren't Enough.......2007-02-18
This movie should be so much better. Instead, Lee tries far to hard to be all things to all people. Everyone gets their say. Gays, Muslims, Jews, homophobes, rascists, biracial people, the young, old, wealthy, conservatives, liberals, women and so on. So many different voices and no clear message. The movie devolves into a series of pontifications with each character getting his turn to hold forth.
A GREAT BUS ADVENTURE!!!!.......2006-01-16
THIS IS A PRETTY GOOD MOVIE. I THINK THAT THIS MOVIE IS WAS PRETTY GOOD. I ENJOYED IT. CHARLES S. DUTTON AND AN ALL- STAR CAST GET ON THE BUS TO GO ON TO THE MILLION MAN MARCH IT IS A GREAT ADVENTURE AND A THRILLNG BUS RIDE. THIS IS A BUS RIDE WHERE PEOPLE DISPLAY THEIR OPINIONS ABOUT ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING AND LET EVERYTHING AMD EVERYONE HAS TRIBLUATIONS ALONG THE WAY BUT IN THE END ARE VERY HAPPY TO MAKE IT TO THE MARCH!!!!
Spike Lee at his best and worst..........2004-04-27
His best: social journalism. Nobody brings perennially pressing issues to the screen as consistently and vitally as Spike Lee---love or hate his films as you may, there's no argument that he does a superb job of provoking debate and reflection. Here it's Lee's two favorite topics, racial history/injustice/relations and (less prominently but still significant) gender/sexual issues...treated with a vast amount of humor and often insight.
His worst: at times some of his films implode when Lee gets on his soapbox and goes too heavy-handed---the Message blots out the Movie. This happens towards the last one-third, with the last 10 minutes especially preachy and contrived. The film craft breaks down, characters and dialogue that before had been pretty much spot-on suddenly verge into labored allegory and caricature.
It's like Lee drew up a laundry list of Pressing Societal Problems (brings to mind Larwence Kasdan's "Grand Canyon") and tried to allot 5-10 minutes for each one. Sometimes he does so with grace and wit, but sometimes he stumbles into glibness and stereotyping.
I was a little disappointed that Lee didn't show more of the actual Million Man march, maybe explore the controversial Louis Farrakhan a little bit more deeply. I was however pleasantly surprisd that Lee does take a fairly mature, gutsy stand on homosexuality and homophobia absent in some of his earlier films.
Had Lee made this film more as a straight (or pointed) documentary rather than trying to turn it into a heavy-handed inspirational treatise, I'd gladly give it 5 plus stars. Even in its current form it's well worth watching.
One of my favz - Great actors makes it a wonderful film.......2004-03-30
This is according to me a very good film, it's actually one of my fav's.
What makes it so good is the feeling u get from watching the movie, U feel that u are a passenger on the bus observing the others.
There are some great performances in this movie unlike Spike Lee's HE GOT GAME that had a player in the NBA in the lead and pretty much everybody except for DENZEL & Hill Harper didn't know how to act.
Great performances from GABRIEL CASSEUS, HILL HARPER, OSSIE DAVIS and the rest of the cast.
A thoughtful film.......2004-03-10
Get on the Bus is one of Lee's best works. Poignant, funny and introspective, it tells the tale of various black men from various walks of life; a father and his estranged, angst-ridden son, a gay couple, an arrogant actor, an ex-Crip turned Muslim, a half white cop and Ossie Davis as the "spiritual grandfather/moderator" type. They travel from California to DC for the Million Man March, and along the way come to terms with prejudice and hatred they have felt without as well as within.
Some may criticize the "stereotypical" treatment of the white characters, but this may be a bit much. The Jewish Bus driver is an honorable character, and in a scene with him and Charles Dutton, director Lee let's him speak his side of the story "OK, I may have some problems with blacks....but no more worse than the problems you have with whites. I don't have anything to prove to these guys". Randy Quade's redneck cop may have been over the top, but suffice to say, there are people in parts of America who still treat people that way.
Overall, I think this film is definitely Lee's most underrated work.

Amazon.com essential video

Customer Reviews:
I would give 100 gold stars!.......2007-06-12
Hands down, without question, the finest video in my kids' collection. This video has been playing strong in our house for almost 2 years now. My son started when he was 1 and now we have a 1 1/2 daughter that loves it just as much him. And the other parents are right, this video is not only adicting to children, but i catch myself singing and watching the video every time i put it on for my kids. it is so fun to play and sing with them to this video...they abosulely love it!
we all sing.......2007-03-08
I did a search one day for the wheels on the bus song on my pc when my 1 year old was crabby... I found the previews and watched with him and he was hooked. I just bought the DVD and my entire family is now singing fill it up, and the others songs in the movie. It's kind of cool to see Roger Daltrey, since I saw him on the first farewell tour with the Who in 1989. When my wife found out there was a second video, she asked me why we don't have it too... I'm getting it today. Really god stuff for all the kids...you'll be singing too!
Playing it 'round and 'round.......2007-01-23
My four-year-old loves this video. He's very active and not really into sitting in front of the TV, but this is one he asks for over and over again from the moment he gets home from pre-school. He and even his six-year-old brother have had lots of laughs watching it. Roger Daltry is the voice of the bus-driving dragon, and the video teaches more than just what you might find on the bus. It takes viewers to an aquarium and a zoo and also does a piece about nutrition as well. Also, on the bonus features, there's a "making of" video that my kids really enjoyed. We actually borrowed it originally from our local library and renewed it to the renewing limit.
Two year olds love it.......2007-01-04
Ordered this video for my granddaughter's birthday. She loved it. It's a song that she is learning at daycare and she was so proud that she could sing along. I reccomend this video for toddlers.
This Is For Parents Too.......2006-09-03
Our toddler lit up when she saw this for the first time. Clever lyrics, arrangements and vocals introduce the youngsters to swing, jazz, a little rap and I swear a country western guitar. The musicians are having fun and the actors are feeding off it. We bought the CD too and the commute to daycare has become a happy ritual.

A Milestone of Cinema - Completely Astounding!.......2007-03-21
This ist one if the greatest films I have ever laid my hand upon. Intriguing plot with completely recognizable and relateble four dimensional characters. The struggle of the characters was extremely deep, definitely top notch. Screenwriters, pay attention! This film will not leave youre video player for a long, long time.
108% Righteous Bothers. Moghollon.

Wonderful Children's DVD.......2006-11-10
I bought this because I wanted to get as many different videos in this series as possible. It is a great series! Each story on the DVD is about 8-10 minutes long and built around a nursery rhyme. Each story has two songs, the original nursery rhyme, and an original song that fits with the story. The stories are cute and creative and these are wonderful "first" videos for a child. Just be prepared for your child to insist on watching them - a lot. The only thing I don't like is the narration on these US versions - Jane Kaczmarek is not as good as Dawn French. Also, anyone that has the UK DVDs in this series should be aware that there are some duplications on this DVD (Jack & Jill, and Twinkle Twinkle). But even with the duplications, this is a nice addition to the series with three unique stories (Humpty Dumpty, Three Ships, and Hot Cross Buns).
My 14-month old LOVES this.......2006-04-30
I got this as a gift from a British friend of mine... when we first turned it on I thought my son would hate it. Wow, was I wrong. He has started singing some of the songs when they come on (he's only 14 months) and it is the FIRST DVD that he has requested by name (Beep Beep). I've read the other reviews - yes, the animation is someone raw and you only hear the "Wheels" song in between, but there are lots of other songs and children could care less about bad animation. Remember the bad stuff we watched as kids? Horribly animated Christmas specials? Bottom line is this - I came online today to purchase a SECOND Wheels DVD because my son is so fascinated with the Humpty Dumpty one.

A beautifully heart-wrenching movie. Zhao, a middle-aged laid-off factory worker, longs for a wife; in the hopes of marrying a pushy divorcée, he agrees to pay for an expensive wedding. To raise money, he turns a derelict bus into a place for couples to rendezvous, and brags to his fiancee about how he manages the Happy Times Hotel. When the divorcée insists that Zhao give Ying, her blind stepdaughter, a job at the hotel as a masseuse, he convinces his friends to help him concoct a fake massage parlor where the girl can work. Happy Times begins as a delightful light comedy, but as the relationship between Zhao and Ying grows, this deceptively simple movie flows effortlessly back and forth from sweetness to sorrow, culminating in a devastatingly moving ending. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
BEST MOVIE EVER!!!.......2007-02-20
I am not really 13. In fact...I am 16, and completely entranced by the essence of this movie! I was totally flabbergasted once the movie started! There wasn't huge bombs exploding or people doing crazy "Matrix" moves, but for some non-apparent reason, I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. I was caught, Hook, line and sinker by the the first half hour! The poor girl seemed like a rebel at first, but after you learn her story you change from judgemental to compassionate! This is a definite must see movie! I would reccomend it to a 90 year old man and to a 7 year old girl. The lessons and knowledge shared is enough to influence anyone and to leave an impression that will not be easily forgotten.
Yimou's best........2005-10-24
I really don't care for some of Yimou Zang's films that other people seem to love. Hero and House of the Flying Daggers are really great visual masterpieces, but to me they seem rather silly and unrealistic on many levels (not just technical).
However, I really love his other films dealing with ordinary people in realistic settings. Among them, Happy Times is by far the best.
This movie's central theme is about one person lying to another to bring him/her joy and meaning in existence. It is the act of deception that somehow gets turned into a great expression of love. That is an amazing thing to capture.
The actors are just perfect, especially the two leads. The girl playing the blind actress made the best performance I've seen ever.
If you like this movie, check out Shanghai Triad and Keep Cool.
Don't be fooled by the cover.......2005-05-09
I almost didn't rent this movie-because--quite simply--I thought the cover picture held promises of a silly little movie--good for maybe a few "chunky mama" jokes--boy was I wrong--this is one of the better movies I've seen recently. The movie does begin along the lines of what I expected-as Zhao creates his "Happy Times Hotel"-and there is a bit of humor--but once he begins his relationship with Ying--the story progresses into a dramatic touching relationship between the two outcasts--young blind Ying and middle aged, never married Zhao. Their relationship is not a romantic one--but a paternal one-with Zhao writing a fake letter to Ying from her father who abandoned her--among other things.
The ending is not the happy, feel good ending typical of American movies--which is probably one of the things that makes it stand out.
The movie is subtitled-which I have no problem with--but my wife doesn't normally like subtitled movies--but she loved this one. If you don't care for subtitles--give this one a try anyway--it's worth the little extra effort!
Forsaken, Brave China.......2005-02-19
Don't kid yourself reviewers. There's a whole lot more here than meets the eye. You don't have to be a friendless blind girl in a city of ten million to appreciate human frailty and kindness. Yimou Zhang is a very fine director and his vision can be thoughtful and appreciated on several levels. China is still exotic to look at from my American standpoint. The colors are garish and bright. The modern city bustles, the young are hip and making it where they can. The old worker's, many victims of the poverty and cruelty caused by The Great Leap Forward and other catastrophic Marxist disasters, are still searching for happiness. Now, in their fifties, they look about and their old factories are rusting, glass office towers are going sky high.
I'm still not sure that the actress that played a blind teen is not actually blind. Either way, she's a genius. Her final scene, forsaken, blind, but brave China, venturing into the traffic. This is filmmaking.
5-Stars for Happy Times.......2005-02-09
The only reason I watched this film was because Zhang Yimou directed it. That's the respect I have for him as a director in this industry. At first blush, I thought that Happy Times was going to be a shallow, corny type of movie. I couldn't have been more wrong. While there are more light-hearted moments than in Yimou's other works, Happy Times gives glimpse into the lives of common Chinese people and a much more penetrating and uplifting look into the human heart and human spirit.
From the reviews you should already know that Happy Times is about an aging Chinese man trying to court a potential wife. He tries to persuade her by pretending to be something he is not - the general manager of a luxury hotel. But in the process he finds himself taking responsiblity for the woman's blind stepdaughter. How this all works out in the end is something you just have to see for yourself. Trust me, it is an exquisite Zhang Yimou finish.
I am not at all familiar with the actors but they were all wonderful. In particular, actress Dong Jie gives a heartbreakingly eloquent performance as the blind stepdaughter.

Description
"The Wheels on the Bus - Mango Helps the Moon Mouse" is the second episode in the award-winning Wheels on the Bus Series.
The DVD once again stars Roger Daltrey as the voice of Argon the Dragon, the driver of the bus. Mango Helps the Moon Mouse also features Saturday Night Live Alumnus, Victoria Jackson, as the Moon Mouse.
For children ages two to four, Mango Helps the Moon Mouse teaches the early socialization skills of Helping, Sharing, Good Manners and Cooperation. The lessons were developed under the guidance of esteemed Yale University Child Psychologist, Dr. Dorothy G. Singer, who ensured that the educational content was correct and that the videos were overall appropriate for the intended age group.
The story follows Mango the monkey and his friends as they help the Moon Mouse, who has crash-landed on the earth while searching for cheese. They all embark on an adventurous bus ride that includes stops at a reptile show, a birthday party, a bird show, and finally the moon itself. Along the way there are fun musical versions of "The Wheels on the Bus" as well as six new songs composed by Laura Hall and sung by Roger Daltrey and Victoria Jackson.
Bonuses include a Behind the Scenes Video that shows the making of the DVD through the eyes of the eleven-year-old star, Janie Laurel Escalle.
A bonus 30-minute-long reptile show expands on the three-minute show in the video, featuring the amazing Reptile Family.
A Lyric Sheet and a Parent's Guide are also included with the DVD. The parent's guide was written by Dr. Dorothy G. Singer, Yale University and helps parents and care-givers extend the teachings and lessons of the video.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome Music!.......2006-04-18
We love the music on this DVD! My four-year-old daughter knows every lyric and we sing it everywhere we go. (My year-old daughter hums "The Wheels on the Bus" constantly because of the video and that is pretty cute!) Roger Daltrey has done a wonderful job as the voice of Argon and Victoria Jackson is sooo cute as Moon Mouse. We have the first "Wheels on the Bus" with Mango and Papaya but I think we like this second one better, mostly because the music is so wonderful.
Not as good as the first!!.......2006-03-23
My son loved the first Mango and Papaya Wheels on the Bus. It is still his favorite. He did not even want to watch the Moon Mouse one at first. It has since grown on him and even my husband and I. We still sing the songs from the first one though... ALL of the time!
The Wheels on the Bus - Mango Helps the Moon Mouse.......2006-03-09
If your child loved the first "Wheels on the Bus", they'll have the same enthusiasm for this one. Our two-year old loves the song, does all of the motions, and even calmly got his first boy haircut with Mom and Grandpa singing the "Yellow School Bus" song with him.
Mango Helps the Moon Mouse.......2006-02-27
This is an amazing video. My two year old loves it. A must have for all!!
Excellent Educational Video.......2005-12-19
My children and their friends enjoyed this Video tremendously.
Our PTA purchased both "The Wheels on the Bus featuring Mango,"
as an additional learning tool to their Core Curriculum.
