Hey, what can I say? I bought it as a gift for mum and she said it was fine. She had other old Shirley Temple movies recorded off the TV onto VHS, so the improved video quality and faster DVD access (no rewinding) was a plus.

I have always loved the Shirley Temple movies and enjoyed sharing them with my 3 older children when they would come on TV. I now have a 5 year old little girl and I love being able to buy these movies on DVD now. My daughter loves them as much as I do and goes around singing some of the songs from them sometimes. In Vol. 1 her favorite movie was "Heidi", she was on the edge of her seat most of the time hoping that "Grandfather would find Heidi. I highly recomend the whole collection!

This volume includes all of the movies mentioned. Each DVD allows you to select whether you would like to watch it in black and white or color. My nephew who is a fourth grader actually really liked it, so I think that makes it wonderful. It's cute, really clean, and has lots of singing. If you look for movies like that, you'll love this collection. I have all of the volumes and recommend them all. The picture and sound quality are great!!!

Definitely the weakest set..........2007-04-30

As a Shirley Temple fan, I have purchased each one of these new DVD sets so far. This one is definitely the weakest.

The one strong movie of the three, "The Little Princess", cannot make up for the other two. Though all three movies look good, it is the story/plot of each that is either their saving grace or their downfall. (Note that two of these movies - "The Little Princess" and "The Blue Bird" are in colour, while "Stand Up and Cheer" has been left in its original black-and-white state without a colourized version.)

"The Blue Bird" is weak, and it is understandable that this film was the one generally viewed to have ended Shirley's career as a child actress. The story is boring and drawn out, and one cannot help but think that it would be much better as a play (and, in fact, it was originally a play). Shirley is unappealing as a selfish child, and the acting on the part of her co-stars is not very good. Young children would probably not understand some of the underlying themes, and might get bored. I certainly did...

"The Little Princess", made a year earlier than "The Blue Bird", is a much better film. Based on the book by Frances Hodgson Burnett, the movie tells the classic story of little Sara Crewe and her undying belief that her soldier father is still alive. This version looks great; the colour is wonderful. The sound didn't seem quite right (loud ambient noise and too-quiet voices), but that may be my DVD player.

"Stand Up and Cheer" is just a weird movie. It's not for children, and it barely has enough of a plot to keep adults entertained. It's a mish-mash of song-and-dance numbers, and Shirley barely features in it at all. Luckily, with DVD technology, we can skip right to her special scene (and it is a good one... it's no wonder the 1930s movie-going public fell in love with this child!).

I am still waiting for some of my other favourites to be released as part of this series, but I don't know how many more 3-disc sets there will be, as there are five movies (by my count) left to be released: "Our Little Girl", "The Poor Little Rich Girl", "Stowaway", "Wee Willie Winkie", and "Young People".

So, for this set, three stars. The films have been restored nicely. They're just rather weak on content.

I don't typically go in for these fifty movie sets because most times you may get a couple good movies and the rest are so-so. This set offers at least a half dozen good movies that sold for at least five or more dollars and you may still see some of them sold independently. In addition you have some good Three Stooges thrown in as well. This is one of the few fifty movie sets I recommend.

bought this for my 80 year old mother. this was the solution to "there is nothing decent on t.v. anymore. she is really enjoying wathching the old and apparently "decent" movies.

Not Only The Greatest Child Actress. But The Greatest Actress Ever........2006-12-29

I just finished watching this volume 3 collection and want to wholeheartedly endorse it.
I had read some reviews that the picture quality and sound was not so good and was doubtful if I should buy it, but bought it all the same as I had enjoyed the other two volumes so much.
Well I was not disappointed at all. The sound quality was very good. Try listning to it on the stereo option on the on-screen menu.
These are three of her very best films and you will laugh and enjoy them so much.
My wife never ever heard of Shirley Temple till 2006 when I introduced her to Shirley's films and now we both are big fans and look forward to these re-releases.
'The Little Colonel' and 'The littlest Rebel' both have the excellent Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson acting and dancing in fine form with Shirley.
Bill worked out the dance routines in all these three pictures but only stars in the above mentioned two.

No one grabs my attention like Shirley. It's a whole combination of things like her smile and laughter, her dancing and mannerisms and she cry's so realistic that you would think she is really upset (but no it's just our Shirley doing her stuff, excellent as useual).
Shirlet Temple is a gale of fresh air in a very stale and cynical world and her films will restore hope and confidence to you in the human race.

Movie jumped all over the place.......2006-12-20

I am returning the Vol. I movie, Heidi, movie was terrible; movie jumped all over the place throughout the entire movie. I am returning for another one that hopefully works. These should be checked out before they are sent. I had wanted it for a XMas gift for my daughter; good thing I looked at it first. I am very disappointed. I hope the next one works.

Sound quality not what it should be.......2006-06-08

I own all 3 of these Shirley Temple sets that have been released so far. The sound quality seems to be going downhill...

All 3 of the DVDs in Volume One were okay. I was very pleased with that set. In Volume Two, I noticed that the sound quality in Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm was not that great (quiet voices and comparatively loud music). In this last volume, the sound was questionable in The Littlest Rebel... but it was atrocious in Dimples. It sounded as if all the actors were talking into pillows. I have watched these films on VHS and the sound is fine... perhaps something went wrong when they were put onto DVD.

I will say, however, that I absolutely love The Littlest Rebel and The Little Colonel. They're probably my favourite Shirley Temple movies, so to find them both in Volume Three was great. I was worried about The Little Colonel, though. The last scene was originally shot in Technicolor; however, in Fox's last VHS release of the movie (colourized), they cut the scene! I was so glad to see that the lovely "pink party" scene was included in this version... it's wonderful to see such an early example of colour in the movies.

As with the other two sets, the colourization of the black and white films is good (much better than previous attempts). However, the sound quality really annoyed me. Had I known it would be so bad, I would have just skipped Dimples and purchased the other two DVDs separately.

My husband and I both love all Shirley Temple memorabilia and were excited to receive Vol. 2 of her movie collection.
The quailty of the CD's was exceptional and the pricing was much better than we expected.The product was shipped quickly and we will definately order again as we expand our collection.....A must have!

A good-quality set..........2006-09-09

... to add to your collection of Shirley Temple movies. While these aren't some of her best, they are still entertaining.

"Captain January" is probably the most fun of the bunch. I like most of the movies Shirley made between 1934 and 1936, and this one falls neatly in amongst them. "At the Codfish Ball", a great song-and-dance number with Buddy Ebsen, is included.

By the time "Just Around the Corner" came out, Shirley was getting a little old, and the mannerisms that might have passed for cuteness as a child were beginning to get a little annoying. The movie is still worth seeing though, if only for her dance routines with Bill Robinson.

When watching "Susannah of the Mounties", keep in mind that it was a story about a different time (the 1880s) that was made in a different time (the 1930s). It will probably come across as somewhat racist to today's viewers, but it will still probably appeal to Shirley fans.

The problems with sound that I noticed on some of the discs in the last two collections seem to have been corrected. The audio was fine, and the colourizations were decent. People thinking of purchasing this collection might want to be aware that, unlike the three previous collections, there was no charm bracelet included with this one (I don't mind... I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the three I now have!).

All in all, it's a fine set for the collection. I hope there will be a Volume 5... I'm still waiting for "Stowaway" and "Poor Little Rich Girl" (two of my other 1936 favourites).

My co-worker loves Shirley Temple and requested a Shirley Temple movie for our office pollyanna. I have never ordered anything on line. I had looked everywhere for a Shirley Temple movie I went to all of the top Video stores and nothing. One day I was one line and typed in Shirley Temple and wow what a selection, that was one of the best days of my life. My co-worker who is now my friend loved the gift so much... The genius of Shirley Temple is often overlooked. She gets lost in the fact that she's a child in all of her most famous films. The fact that as a dancer she worked with the best dancers of her era because, as young as three-years-old, she was their equal, gets lost in the legend. If you study any book on American Jazz Dance you'll find reference to, in most, chapters devoted to, the work of Shriley Temple. She was not only an inspiration, she was a unique and powerful talent. These films represent her earliest work; the becoming of the original child super star. While they may not be of high quality; while their subject matter may seem perculiar by modern standards, taken in the perspective of their own time and as small vehicles that hearalded a brilliant career, they are essential to the collections of serious students of pop culture, dance history, and 20th Century entertainment. If you're looking to be entertained with a story about Heidi, or Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, or Captain January, you'd do best to get those films. But if you're a student of the development of American icons, missing these little old movies would be losing a lot of pixels from the "Big Picture."

My mom received this set for her birthday and when she and I sat down to watch it we were half amused and half appauled. I don't mean to overexaggerate the situation, but the subject matter, if you read the summaries on the back of the box, seem to be a little racy and questionable. Shirley Temple as a burlesque performer? A prostitute. Ummm... yeah.

This DVD was more than disappointing. It's a rip off. It's bad quality short films. The best thing about it is the picture on the cover. It's pretty much small children in oversized diapers acting too much like adults. It's difficult to understand the dialogue, and when you do - you just think about how horrible it was that people ever found this amusing. I love Shirley Temple movies, but this is no collection I ever want to own, or pass off on to any unsuspecting fan. The film quality is poor - and at least one of the DVD links took me to the film before rather than the film it was titled to take me to. Whoever came up with this collection was more interested in making money than producing a quality product. I will never buy another 'Passport Productions Video.'

Disappointing.......2004-08-05

Disk 1 contains 4 shorts: Glad Rags to Riches, War Babies, Pie Covered Wagon, & Dora's Dunking Doughnuts. Sound and picture quality is poor.
Disk 2 contains 4 shorts: Polly Tix in Washington, Kid in Hollywood, Kid in Africa, & Managed Money. Sound and picture quality is poor.
Disk 3 contains 3 shorts: Pardon My Pups, Merrily Yours, & What's To Do?. Sound and picture quality is poor but better than the first 2 disks.
Disk 4 contains the movie "The Little Princess". It is a colorized version. The sound quality is very poor. There is a lot of echo in it. In addition, the logo "The Shirley Temple Collection" is lightly superimposed at the bottom the screen throughout the entire movie.
Disk 5 is the best one of the set. It contains "Shirley Temple Rarities" and "Kid Stuff: Inside Hollywood's Child Stars". Rarities is a bio of Shirley that includes home movies and movie trailers. Kid Stuff is a bio of numerous child stars.
I general I would not recommend this collection unless you really a big fan of her short features or would like to see the two documentaries on disk 5.

AS a big fan of Shirley Tample it was great to get all of these classics in one set. My family love to sit every Sunday morning and watch a Shirly Temple classic and these stories give us a much wider selection and a chance to see Sirley as she grew up..

A very disappointed Shirley Temple fan..........2006-12-31

I was born in the mid-seventies and have always enjoyed watching the classic Shirley Temple movies. When I saw this collection I thought it would be a great way to introduce Miss Temple to my daughter while also watching some of the fun stories she's familiar with acted out. I was very wrong.

First of all, Shirley Temple is in her mid-thirties and only narrates the stories. There are some pieces where she does play a small part but the show mostly focuses on other child actors and guest stars such as Jonathan Winters, Agnes Moorehead, etc. It was like watching cheap plays done at an elementary school. The acting and writing are very poor and the production and set quality are also poor.

There is a reason this TV show was cancelled after only one season. My daughter lost interest after only three mintues and I did after five. I am giving this away to our local library.

"Shirley Temple's Storybook" was a successful television series (that ran in colour on NBC between 1958 and 1961) where Miss Temple hosted and more often than not, starred in, adaptations of fairy tale classics and other works of children's literature. Serving as the precursor to other shows like "Faerie Tale Theatre" and "Tall Tales and Legends", "Shirley Temple's Storybook" boasted a galaxy of stars from stage and screen, elaborate production values and lavish costumes. The series later ran in syndication under the "Shirley Temple Show" title.

In "The Little Mermaid", Shirley Temple stars in the title role. Based on Hans Christian Andersen's tender fairytale of selfless love and sacrifice. While living in a kingdom at the bottom of the ocean can be very pretty, the Little Mermaid feels there is something more that life has in store for her. During a brief visit to the surface, she rescues and falls in love with a handsome prince (Donald Harron), and vows to become a human. A bargain with the Merwitch (Nina Foch) is the obvious answer to her dilemma, but will the Little Mermaid risk her very life to become part of the prince's world?...

Shirley Temple brings a lot of depth and feeling to her portrayal of the title role. Legendary actress Cathleen Nesbitt plays dear Granny Mermaid to perfection. With Nancy Kulp, John Hoyt, J. CURLY TOP is a musical version of Jean Webster's "Daddy Long Legs", about a young orphan who is mysteriously sponsored by a never-named benefactor.

Shirley Temple and Rochelle Hudson play Elizabeth and Mary Blair, two orphans who are sponsored by Edward Morgan (John Boles) who uses the alias of 'Hireman Jones'. Complications arise when Edward falls in love with Mary but of course he cannot reveal his true identity. It's up to little Elizabeth to play matchmaker!

Jane Darwell, Esther Dale, Arthur Treacher and Rafaela Ottiano round out the supporting cast. Temple sings the classic "Animal Crackers in My Soup". A real charmer.

Twentieth Century-Fox would revisit this property again in 1955's "Daddy Long Legs" (starring Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron).
