The savage fury of nature is vividly profiled in this video from National Geographic. Focusing on earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, and floods--including the San Francisco quakes of 1906 and 1989 and Hurricane Andrew, which ravaged southern Florida in 1992--the production features terrifying footage shot during natural disasters as well as interviews filmed with survivors. Film shot from helicopters provides startling looks at the scale of devastation resulting from these disasters, but this documentary goes beyond looking at just the immediate effects of catastrophes. Personal stories of preparation, survival, and cleanup put a human face on nature's wrath. Solid scientific information is provided throughout, with computer graphics, for instance, demonstrating how the Mississippi floods formed in 1993. An explanation of Doppler radar and a visit with researchers who are attempting to predict earthquakes provide insight into the cutting edge of science. But it's the raw human drama in the video that steals the show. A climactic scene of a heavy-equipment operator risking his life while driving his bucket loader out onto a Mississippi River levee in a futile effort to stop the river from breaking through is more exciting than anything Hollywood could devise. --Robert J. McNamara

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-04-05

I would recommend this for anyone. It's something that draws your attention so well. Sometimes you follow individual people in their efforts to explain some wild weather, and other times see tragic advents or watch amazing footage or learn about the science and nature about a certain storm. A tornado, perhaps, or an earth quake. Sometimes you even get some history with different time periods.
I will never regret watching this. It's made me more aware of storms than ever before.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best DVD sets.......2005-06-08

You will love this DVD set by National Geographic. They have put some of there best shows in this collection. It has some great bonus features too. I love watch documentaries about nature and are plant. This set was very informative and great to watch. Nature Fury was the best out of all 3 shows.

4 out of 5 stars A decent exploration of Mother Nature and global weather.......2004-04-07

The Restless Earth Collection by National Geographic explores aspects of natural disasters, space phenomena (asteroids), and weather systems that affect our world throughout our lives. Spread out over 3 discs, the material is presented in a well narrated, matter of fact approach that keeps your interest throughout the programs.

'Asteroids: Deadly Impact' explores the history of asteroid and comet strikes on our planet and speculates on what future consequences we might experience when (the law of averages are we will be hit again someday) that impact occurs. Interviews with experts on heavenly bodies and our solar system reveal interesting information regarding our ever changing galaxy.

'Volcano: Nature's Inferno' is an excellent documentary on the massive and awesome display of incredible power harnessed by the earth. Volcanologists are followed to various areas of the globe where they research, report on, and study some of the earth's most active volcanoes. There is really impressive footage of lava flows, eruptions, landslides, and avalanches. A bonus feature on this disc is 'Into the Volcano' where a seasoned photographer and his crew venture close to active volcanoes and craters and record amazing footage.

The last and most interesting disc in this collection, in my opinion, is 'Nature's Fury'. Here is a no holds barred look at earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods. The overwhelming power and devastation of these natural disasters have to be seen to be believed and it is truly astonshing in almost all cases. This disc documents Mother Nature releasing her fury in locations throughout the globe and how science is working today to better understand what causes these disasters to happen and how we can better prepare for it. Two bonus programs on this disc are 'Tornado Hunters' and 'Lightning Strikes', both are interesting and offer decent material.

All in all, National Geographic has produced a nice collection here that doesn't disappoint. The DVD footage is very clear and impressive and each disc offers Dolby 5.1 Surround which sounds really good. If there is any down side at all, it may be that more footage would have been nice of the natural disasters (tornadoes, hurricanes) and that is my reason for only 4 stars. Still, for the asking price, this is a worthwhile purchase if you enjoy this subject material. Recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Good, not great.......2001-11-14

This isn't really a bad DVD release, but it is on the low end of the quality material expected from National Geographic. The heavy metal music blaring over MTV-style edits of tornadoes and lightning storms occasionally dips into the murky waters of the worst of reality TV programming about disasters. Ditto the black-and-white recreations of tragedy a la Rescue 911. Techniques like these are used mostly during sections about disasters that don't get caught on tape as often, but it's still annoying.

The feature is only 55 minutes in length, but the DVD contains two extra programs, both around 20 minutes long (one on lightning strikes and one on tornadoes and storm chasers). They are both interesting and somewhat informative...in fact, I liked the program about tornadoes better than the feature.

And, while I do expect National Geographic to produce a more top-shelf product with a little more substance, the 5.1 audio and the crystal clear picture produces a treat for your senses. This release is definately designed to entertain rather than inform.

4 out of 5 stars Agreed - very good video but short on tornados.......2001-03-03

I agree with the other reviewers who gave this DVD 5 stars except on the point about tornados. There is one very good sequence in the video but the remainder of the tornado section is very sparse, especially compared to the time spent on other natural events. If you want tornados, I suggest finding another video.

5 out of 5 stars Eccellent DVD on nature........2000-08-04

The thing that impresses me about National Geographic DVD's is the amount of effort put into their documentaries. This one has everything. It covers tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, fires, storms and building collapses.National Geographic puts a great deal of effort into covering the history of the disasters, far more so than others that cover the same thing. It covers the why of what happens, the history of the area, the type of land, the people and how it occurs. This is the DVD to own if you want one on the wild side of nature. It is only about 54 minutes long, but is a good DVD...

5 out of 5 stars One of NG's Best.......2000-04-04

I owned this on VHS. So when it came out on DVD, I just had to get it. National Geographic has always done an excellent job on their documentries.Natures Fury is a good example. The picture clarity is what you would expect on a DVD. The sound quality makes the tornadoes and booming thunder sound like it is in the room. If you like to chase violent storms or enjoy watching these wonders of nature, waste no time and buy this DVD!
