It's a stoner's delight as growers and their candidates for the best marijuana (hashish too) in the world gather in Amsterdam in 2002 for the 15th Cannabis Cup, sponsored by (who else) High Times magazine. Here you'll find TV takeoffs ("Highwitness News," the Survivor-esque "Cannabis Castaways"), some political harangues, quite a bit of music (including a performance by Marty Balin and Starship), plenty of loving close-ups of perfect pot buds, and of course lots of people smoking copious amounts of herb and acting like potatoes. At 102 minutes long, the whole thing moves about as briskly as someone who just polished off a full bongload of "Sacred Haze" or "White Smurf." Must have been a laugh a minute for all the ganja gladiators involved--but in the absence of Smell-o-vision (or maybe something else…), for those of us watching at home, well, guess you had to be there. --Sam Graham
Description
The Cannabis Cup was founded in 1988 by HIGH TIMES' editor-in-chief Steven Hager to establish an international standard for cannabis seeds. He modeled it after the harvest festivals held in California in the 1970s, where growers would bring their finest buds and a winner would be judged. Held every November in Amsterdam, The Cannabis Cup is now a huge festival event, with flocks of pot connoisseurs arriving from around the world to sample "the kind". This 102 minute program combines documentary footage of the festival's concerts and ceremonies with hilarious TV show parodies such as The Cannabis Castaways reality TV show--six heads stranded on an Amsterdam houseboat, The Grow Show with Kyle Kushman--cultivation tips from master growers, Wake and Bake with Jay--Good Morning Amsterdam, and The HighWitness News featuring Johnny Zero. Also included is close-up photography of the world's best buds and of course the Cannabis Cup winners

3 out of 5 stars A weak "documentary" from a festival that is struggling to stay alive.......2007-04-30

The Cannabis Cup is an annual festival (19 years in the running) held by High Times magazine in Amsterdam. The festival centers around the judging of marijuana strains, with awards handed out in a variety of categories. This High Times-produced documentary was filmed at the 2003 event (incidentally, the first year the festival operated at a net loss, and the event was scaled back in 2004).

The documentary features mock-television shows such as a Cannabis Castaways, a Survivor-rip-off. The premise of that show boggled me--how can anyone reasonably smoke and compare strains of cannabis within a compressed two- or three-hour time period? Wine connoisseurs don't swallow the wine when they are in a tasting environment, so if you get a high off the taste testing, how can you strictly compare one strain to another?

Overall, this is an overly-long view of American potheads descending on a European city for a festival traditionally held during the Thanksgiving holiday. It's a rotten entry in the documentary genre, lacking focus, structure, or social/historical context. There are some gorgeous camera shots of the plant, but there's no need for an entire documentary to feature camera pans of botany (a coffeetable book could show plant life just as well, if not better). This viewer has decided that the one time she won't visit The Netherlands is during the annual Cannabis Cup.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, not amazing. Solid introduction to an interesting event........2007-01-12

A fun documentary of sorts about an interesting event. The counterculture certainly has a lot of interesting ins and outs, and it's cool to see an event in which the counterculture really comes out of the dark and puts itself on display to an extent that really can't happen yet in the US.

If you're interested in smoking culture, checking out Operation Pipeworks would be worth your while too. It looks at the culture from the perspective of the glass pipes that are so integral to the scene, showing how they are made, the people who make them, and their historty.

It has much better production value, tighter editing, and better music than the High Times Cannabis Cup vid. But then again, Operation Pipeworks only covers the United States, whereas the Cannabis Cup vid is shot in Amsterdam. Both are good, but if you only could get one, get Operation Pipeworks.

4 out of 5 stars HT CC.......2005-09-20

I just wanted to see what the CC was going to be like before I go.

Production could have been a little better but what the heck I enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars I Liked It -- (the end.).......2004-06-18

I thought it was good, especially for someone who has never gone to the Cannabis Cup.

It showed the vastness of the yearly event and the endless numbers of varieties that are actually judged on at the event.

Beautiful pics that will leave you wishing you were there.
Also, pretty long - 102 minutes. (Hooray.)

Good video if you are ever planning to attend -- learn some of what to expect. Would also check out the documentary - WEED, which is also about the event. (But it doesn't have hardly any bud shots.)

2 out of 5 stars Hijaacked?.......2004-02-16

Excerpts from Pot Planet by Brian Paterson
"Its a monstrous big Yankee 'buy buy buy smoke smoke smoke kind of party. It started out as as a nice little festival, and grew big. After last year's downer everyone is just waiting to see what this year will be like. Will it get back to the peaceful co-operative vibe or will it just get weirder?"

Through the sponsorship of high-times and the arrival of american males in their droves, the cannabis cup has mutated into a commercialised shadow of its former self. Do europe a favour america and take your captilist ways home with you after the cup.
