Narration VS Music Sound Track Problems........2007-01-21
Nicely filmed, good sea and island bird life coverage including the seasonal El Nino effects, BUT...the narration is often drowned out by the sound track's musical score--a fault I lay directly on the studio sound staff, sloppy mixer level management, and asleep-at-the-wheel Quality Control people. The narration overall was only "adequate" as the woman doing it spoke as if "too removed/uninterested/laid back" from what she was narrating, a weak script to read from, and spoken softly as well adding to the narration shortfall. Otherwise...this is visually a good DVD of the sea and bird life of the Cocos Islands.
Suspenseful ocean footage!.......2004-07-21
Island of the Sharks is a spectacular look at the ocean around the island of Cocos. Many creatures are photographed here, including: shark species, manta rays, fishes, and quite a few invertebrates. A very startling scene, and one of my favorites, involves a male blenny searching for a mate. However, a very large mantis shrimp threatens all fishes that pass within the area. A female blenny detects the males signal, and searches the sand flats for him. When the tiny female reaches the male, he rebuffs her instantly. The female blenny backtracks in the wrong direction, and is swallowed whole by the waiting shrimp. Excilirating photography! However, this is only a single scene out of many that make this one of the very best films about the ocean. Completely trashes another well known but sub par Imax film called "The Living Sea."
The transfer to DVD of this epic is acceptable. It is very good for a restoration from the Imax screen, which is usually very hard to do. Some scenes of the film are grainy, but this is expected from an Imax restoration. However, most of the picture is clear, and can be enjoyed in full glory. If you love the ocean and it's marvels, rent it or buy it on DVD!
Best UW Documentary ever.......2004-03-17
I buy and watch a lot of underwater documentaries but I have to admit this is but far the best of them so far. Cocos Island has always been my dream diving spot in the world. These guys put together a fantastic video. Quality of the shots are incredible. I strongly recommend anyone who is interested in underwater life.
Interesting story.......2003-10-18
Amazing photography. Make sure you watch the special features on how they made it.
Also - if you have younger children - check out Captain Jon Explores the Ocean, also available on DVD from Amazon.
Not as "sharkful" as I'd like.......2003-08-06
When I pounce on a DVD titled "Island of the Sharks," I expect your typical documentary footage of film crews going into shark cages underwater, and luring sharks to break the surface and chomp on sides of beef dangled over the side of the boat. That didn't turn out to be the case here.
A better title for this DVD might have been simply "Cocos Island," because while the hammerheads of this island are shown, they are by no means the main attraction. It's a good documentary in and of itself, with amazing IMAX photography and a look at the many varities of marine life that inhabit the coral reef around the island. It just wasn't what I was expecting, based on the title.

Night of the Sharks.......2006-10-18
Don't expect this movie to be a shark attack movie. It's a bad attempt at some sort of action movie about some guy who blackmails some businessman who sends some gangsters to kill the blackmailer and get a CD from him. When the blackmailer goes to Mexico to visit his brother, he also becomes a target of the gangsters. Add two or three scenes involving a shark and you have "Night of the Sharks". The script is bad. The characters are dull and the story moves slowly and seems to go on forever. You're glad once it's over.
Don't waste your time and money on this movie.
What is this???.......2005-03-31
How can they call this Night of the Sharks, when there are only two shark attacks throughout the entire film, and neither of them takes place at night? Now don't get me wrong, I've been able to sit through AND enjoy Shark Attack 1, 2, and 3, as well as both of the fantastic Crocodile movies. But this... ...this film can't even decide what genre of movies to fit into. At first it seems like this is going to be a horror movie. Then it seems like an action flick, then a mystery, and all of a sudden it seems like bad Miami Vice rip off. TERRIBLE.
Yes, Treat Williams is solely a B-Movie star, and his acting in Substitute 2: School's out, Substitute 3: Failure is not an Option, and Substitute 4: Winner Take All, were purely Grade A material, but this was just a monstrosity. The plot makes no sense, but I guess I'll give it a try:
This atrocity of a film starts off with Treat Williams and "Paco"(the most annoying character in film history) in a powerboat going after Cyclops, the shark that actually has two eyes. (Way to go film editors.) Then all of a sudden it flips to a bar scene where 50 Mexicans (who appear to be Haitian) start fighting for no reason. But then Treat Williams offers free Cervesa and Tequila to all the fighting guys. They appear to get all liquored up on Treat's $100. (I know the Mexican (Haitian) exchange rate isn't the greatest but come on $100 to get 50 dudes sloshed?) Then comes a twist that I don't think even the writers of this filth expected or understood. Treat's brother steals diamonds and a disk (which never gets explained.) The rest of the movie is about "the bad guys" trying to get the so-called disk back. Remember there are no sharks throughout the rest of this plot. Along the way you also get introduced to a priest and a lady that never get their characters developed. However, they are two of the main characters. Come to think of it you never even get their names.
So to sum it up this is the worst movie I have ever seen, and I've seen The Chronicles of Ridick!
