Of the many films that have chronicled Ernest Shackleton's team's legendary trans-Antarctic expedition and their struggle for survival, Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure is the only documentary that traces the actual steps of the explorers' blessed journey. While providing a concise summary of the Shackleton team's 1914-16 expedition, this breathtaking IMAX feature employs exacting re-creations and flyover footage (from 1999 and 2000) of the same harsh landscapes that Shackleton and his men traversed, by land and sea, during their ill-fated voyage. As with most IMAX films, climactic moments are driven by a bombastic score (how many swollen crescendos can one movie handle?), and the harshest facts of the Shackleton journey (e.g., sacrificing beloved dogs for food and euthanasia) are omitted for family viewing. That's a condescending compromise, and the gravitas of Kevin Spacey's narration is a bit overstated. What matters here are the visuals (both vintage and contemporary), and they're absolutely magnificent, conveying the sheer horror--and divine beauty--of the greatest survival story of all time. --Jeff Shannon

Several films have documented or dramatized the incredible saga of Ernest Shackleton's ill-fated trans-Antarctic expedition, but The Endurance offers the most comprehensive one-source reference. Originally presented as a PBS Nova special and narrated by Liam Neeson, this excellent film--based on Caroline Alexander's acclaimed book, also titled after the ironic name of Shackleton's doomed ship--chronicles the astonishing events of 1914-16, when Shackleton and 27 crewmen survived against all odds after their ship was crushed in the polar ice floes. This is the only "Shackleton" film to incorporate new footage, expert interviews, dramatic recreations (without dialogue), and expedition photographer Frank Hurley's archival film and photographs. This is a beautifully made documentary of Ernest Shackletons legendary failed Antarctic Expedition. Narrated and supplemented with real photos from the expedition, a few dramatazation re-enactments. The true spirit of these men is told in great style here. If you like true adventure and life or death survival I reccomend this DVD.

The best documentary I have ever seen. If it wasn't true no one would believe it. An incredible testament to the power of the human will to survive. Better than anything Hollywood could ever imagine.

Not for elementary students, but I liked it........2007-04-09

Since my elementary students read a story about Sir Earnest Shackeleton's arctic expedition I hoped this would be good visual reinforment for what they learned. It is a documentary (that I found interesting), but a bit much for the younger crowd. If you teach, this video is more appropriate for middle to high school students, not elementary.

i caught a portion of this documentary while at a friend's house, and i just HAD to buy it and watch the whole thing. far and away, one of the best documentaries i have ever seen! the fact that it covers one of the greatest survival stories ever doesn't hurt either. original expedition photos, modern HD video shot on site, excellent voice-over from liam neeson, a plethora of extra features . . . . what more could one ask for? shakleton was a MAN in every sense of the word.

Shackleton was a great leader in impossible circumstances and this story high lights some of those leadership skills. Saw it first on Imax and was very impressed. That is what prompted the purchase.

This film is one for the ages. A good synopsis of the Shackleton story that focuses on the leadership and togetherness that took place on this adventure. I am a corporate leadership trainer who has used this film to teach hundreds of people about true leadership and teamwork. This film is a must see for anyone in a leadership role or hoping to one day attain one. It is also a very good story for families, adventurists, historians, and more. Definitely worth the time and money.

I know it's weird that a kid is reiwing this but i am. this was a good film i saw it in imax and my dad liked it so much he bought it on dvd. so this movie is good for aldults and kids.

An inspirational story of endurance and true leadership. After watching it, I used it as a team building seminar for my staff. Kevin Spacey's narration was excellent.

Good...but not the best.......2005-04-06

This is a good, overall telling of the exciting adventure of Earnest Shackleton's expedition attempt to transnavigate the South Pole. The videography is, as usual, quite spectatular.

However, two other recent versions of this amazing tale are both worth mentioning. "The Endurance - Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition" (2000), with Liam Neeson, and PBS NOVA's "Shackleton's Voyage of Endurance," (2002) with David Ogden-Stiers narrating, are both better accounts because you really get more of the in-depth impact of what did and could have gone wrong on the expedition. It is incredible that, in an era where tradegy from expedition travel was not that uncommon, the fact that all 27 men made it back alive - in such a harsh yet beautifully intriguing environment - is truly amazing. If the IMAX version captured your interest, these other two will rivet you to your chair.
