Description
How far do you have to go to go too far for television? Disinformation found out when it aired its own TV series, hosted by Disinfo co-founder Richard Metzger, on the UK's Channel 4 TV network, challenging the network's censors and resulting in Channel 4 refusing to air certain segments. The first season was bizarrely scheduled after Ally McBeal and surely messed with the heads of more than a few fans of that show-evidently the network didn't quite realize what they had paid for. An instant classic of the weird and unusual, the series was a hit (and was bought, but never aired, by the Sci-Fi Channel in the United States).

This deluxe DVD release follows hot on the heels of the publication of companion book Disinformation: The Interviews. Literary celebs interviewed include Illuminatus! author Robert Anton Wilson, popular media commentator Douglas Rushkoff (Media Virus), Lucifer Principle author Howard Bloom, X-Men scribe and comics-genius Grant Morrison, and underground filmmaker Kenneth Anger-people you rarely see on TV. Shock rocker Marilyn Manson is also featured.

Disinformation: The Complete Series boasts the following features:

• Two discs containing more than six hours of viewing.

• Contains bonus footage-never seen before-from the legendary Disinfo.Con 2000 conference held in New York-a huge counterculture event in New York City's Hammerstein Ballroom that was described by the New York Times as "Cyberpalooza"-including exclusive footage of Robert Anton Wilson, Marilyn Manson, Joe Coleman, Kenneth Anger, Grant Morrison, Adam Parfrey, Douglas Rushkoff, Kembra Pfahler (and the Girls of Karen Black) and more!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Morrison, Rushkoff, and Wilson.......2007-01-11

The show itself is a decidely uneven offering. The real treat here is the footage taken from the DisInfo convention. Rushkoff, Robert Anton Wilson, and especially Grant Morrison make great, thought provoking speeches. I've watched Morrison's several times over the last few years and I always get something new out of it. These speeches are the chief reason to get this dvd.

4 out of 5 stars ONE MIXED BAG OF TRICKS.......2006-12-28

Alright ignore all the other bad reviews on this page, i'm gonna give you the straight dope. I definitely have mixed feelings about this DVD.
DISC 1: On the one hand you have amazing profiles of great artists like Paul Laffoley, Genesis P-Orridge and Joe Coleman. On the other hand you've got ridiculous propaganda like the one-dimensional piece on pornography and the completely unsubstantiated story of Bryce Taylor's Satanic ritual abuse and CIA sex-slaves(when will the space cadets in California give this urban myth up?). Another ridiculous piece is the Montauk Project story, which if you are familiar with the conspiracy/UFO literature is one of those red herring, whack-job ideas that only serves to obscure and complicate the search for the truth. Also the host Richard Metzger REALLY bugs the crap out of me, being all smug, smarmy and fey. He really needs to stop taking himself so seriously. Now overall the main problem with this series is the lack of counterpoints in the pieces, in that they are just presented from a one-sided view with little or no context.
DISC 2: Now here's where things get really enlightening. Only 2 names you need to know: Grant Morrison and Robert Anton Wilson. These guys will blow your mind if you've had revelations while on psychedelic drugs, but couldn't quite put the puzzle together. Robert Anton Wilson is a true hero and a great philosopher, and I would recommend you pick up any and all of his books. My only real beef with this disc is Kenneth Anger, who is the embodiment of everything bad about hollywood. Mr. Anger admits on here that he is a member of the OTO, which is a secret society founded by Aleister Crowley. This is sleazeball city, and if you don't think there exists a sinister occult dimension to the Hollywood culture, think again.
Overall though, I am glad I picked this DVD up.

1 out of 5 stars NOT What I expected.......2006-08-25

If you are familiar with the DisInfo series of books then you may misjudge what this DVD is about. It is basically a series of 1/2 hour shows that only played in Britain, then was canceled even there. The cancellation had nothing to do with banning provocative content. There is no provocative content. Instead we are treated to a freakshow-like parade of unfortunates from off the street and elsewhere. This DVD is horrible.

1 out of 5 stars Not an Alternative 60 Minutes.......2006-06-29

I bought this expecting news stories on par with the books--with the occasional interview (as in the books).

It's not. It is a farce, sensationalism over fact.

I don't recommend this for serious disinfo fans.

However, I do agree with Stealth Kitten. There are few interesting stories (She highlights most of them).

1 out of 5 stars Big disappointment.......2006-03-14

I loved reading all the Disinformation books; assumed the TV program would be similar. Instead of great investigative reporting, the programming is more along the lines of visual National Enquirer. Huge disappointment... save your money for the next Disinfo book.
