Description
World-renowned Iranian writer-director Abbas Kiarostami (TASTE OF CHERRY, THROUGH THE OLIVE TREES) has created a deceptively simple work—shot on digital video within the confines of a single vehicle—that brings the intricate nature of Iran's sexual and social politics into sharp focus. Seen through the eyes of a beautiful, chador-clad divorcĂ©e, the film catches her impromptu conversations with various female passengers (and her imperious young son) as she navigates Tehran's congested and vibrant streets over the course of several days. As Kiarostami's "dashboard cam" eavesdrops on these extraordinary and moving stories of sex, divorce, love and religion, an entirely original and fascinating portrait of modern Iran emerges. Also features the "master class" making-of documentary 10 ON TEN.

but to my surpise i loved it and can't wait for it to come out

and i liked it more then season 9

5 out of 5 stars These kids are alright.......2007-06-06

The landmark season of South Park saw Matt Stone and Trey Parker's animated series back on top thanks to some scathing, satirical moments and just plain animated lunacy. It also saw the departure of Isaac Hayes, the voice of Chef, who departed after the previous season's lampooning of scientology and Tom Cruise. His departure is spoofed in the opening "Return of Chef" which uses archive sounds of Hayes' voice as Chef returns to South Park brainwashed by the Super Adventure Club, and seeling to "re-connect" with children. Things only get better as Kyle's dad buys a hybrid car in "Smug Alert!", Al Gore seeks attention from anyone with "Manbearpig", Cartman's mom turns to the Dog Whisperer in "Tsst!", Satan has a killer Halloween party in "Hell on Earth 2006", and Cartman seeks to freeze himself in anticipation for the release of the Nintendo Wii in "Go God Go". The best moments of the season however came with the two part "Cartoon Wars" which hilariously lampooned Family Guy, and it makes sense in a way you've never imagined. "Make Love, Not Warcraft" satires the players of the incredibly popular online RPG, and "Miss Teacher Bangs a Boy" finds little Ike having an illicit affair. The only downpoint of the season is the closing "Stanley's Cup" which finds Stan coaching a terrible pee-wee hockey team, for no apparent reason. This episode just isn't funny, at all. Despite that though, every other episode here in the tenth season is a winner, and ten years and still going strong, South Park proves that these kids are quite alright.

Legendary silent film director Cecil B. DeMille didn't much alter the way he made movies after sound came in, and this 1956 biblical drama is proof of that. While graced with such 1950s niceties as VistaVision and Technicolor, The Ten Commandments (DeMille had already filmed an earlier version in 1923) has an anachronistic, impassioned style that finds lead actors Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner expressively posing while hundreds of extras writhe either in the presence of God's power or from orgiastic heat. DeMille, as always, plays both sides of the fence as far as sin goes, surrounding Heston's Moses with worshipful music and heavenly special effects while also making the sexy action around the cult of the Golden Calf look like fun. You have to see The Ten Commandments to understand its peculiar resonance as an old-new movie, complete with several still-impressive effects such as the parting of the Red Sea. --Tom Keogh

Product Description

For sheer pageantry and spectacle, few motion pictures can claim to equal the splendor of Cecil B. DeMille's 1956 remake of his epic The Ten Commandments. Filmed in Egypt and the Sinai with one of the biggest sets ever constructed for a motion picture, this version tells the story of the life of Moses (Charlton Heston), once favored in the Pharaoh's (Yul Brynner) household, who turned his back on a privileged life to lead his people to freedom. With a rare on-screen introduction by Cecil B. DeMille himself, this unforgettable movie experience is enhanced by a Dolby surround stereo soundtrack.

I love the ten commandments I have been watching this movie over and over for a long time now. I have no trouble with dvd once so ever, delivery was fast. Great picture quilty and no complaints.

3 out of 5 stars Embarassing script.......2007-07-02

The music and cinematic elements are superb.

The dialogue is often beyond belief and laughable. Pretentious. I have played excerpts for the current generation and they roll on the floor in laughter.

I agree also with some here that many assume some accuracy here...particularly after the rolling of credits at the start of the film which is intended to portray historical research.

There is so much invention in costume, dialogue, and acting that any sense of realism is lost. This is not a story about Christianity....and neither was Ben Hur.

5 out of 5 stars The Ten Commandments (1956).......2007-06-27

Remaking a tale he had previously filmed in 1923, DeMille achieved a career high point with this humongous, star-studded epic--sadly to be his last production. Certain sequences--the parting of the Red Sea, the climb up Mt. Sinai to receive the stone tablets, the orgiastic worship of the golden calf--are some of the most indelible and majestic in film history. Anne Baxter, Edward G. Robinson, and Yvonne De Carlo provide excellent support to Heston, who chews on the role of the hoary, self-righteous prophet, especially in his confrontation with Brynner's feckless Rameses. Only DeMille could make a Bible epic this visually robust and brashly entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Excelelnt silent and talking movies on this collection.......2007-06-25

Charlton Heston is certainly one of the all-time larger-than-life acting greats and he shows it here the way he admirably tackles the role of Moses from rich desired youth to seasoned, religious pious elderly Hebrew leader. Good support he gets from Yul Brynner (as Rameses!), Anne Baxter, Edward G. Robinson and Yvonne DeCarlo! The authentic Egyptian locations courtesy of talented director Cecile B. DeMille enhance this powerful, very important Biblical story. See my amapedia below for my review of the '23 film (also by DeMille!).

5 out of 5 stars Every Home Should Have This!.......2007-05-31

I was so impressed when I received this product. Not only is it beautifully packaged, but both DVDs are excellent quality. It is interesting to see the black and white version, then see the color version. Both are extremely well directed and acted. The color version, of course, is my favorite. Charleton Heston gives a superb performance, but Yul Brynner is absolutely the best actor of all time. This is a must have for all homes!

Throughout its phenomenal run, Friends demonstrated that familiarity doesn't always breed contempt. But isn't it nice that even after 10 years, we could still learn something new about these intimately observed characters? Tidbits revealed in the episode "The One Where the Stripper Cries": Ross (David Schwimmer) and Monica (Courtney Cox Arquette) used to entertain at family gatherings as Donny and Marie; ("Oh God, that's right," remembers Rachel. "I blocked that out.") and Chandler (Matthew Perry) kissed Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) at a college party in the 1980s.

See the 10 or more seasons club.
The best was saved for "The Last One": At one time, Ross (David Schwimmer) pursued being a professional dancer ("Do you realize we almost made it 10 years without that coming up?," he remarks).

Friends' tenth season is all about life changes and closure. Monica and Chandler buy a house and make plans to adopt. Once New Age free spirit Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) gets married. Rachel is offered a job in Paris, prompting Ross to finally proclaim his love.

View clips and vote for your favorite Friends moment.
Two of Friends's most invaluable players are granted worthy send-offs. Janice (Maggie Wheeler) resurfaces as a prospective homebuyer in the house next door to Monica and Chandler in "The One Where Estelle Dies," and Central Perk fixture Gunther (James Michael Tyler) at last professes his adoration of Rachel in "The Last One." Christina Applegate makes a welcome return in "The One Where Rachel's Sister Babysits" and Danny DeVito is the unlikely and very temperamental stripper in "The One Where the Stripper Cries."

Just friends? See our guide to who kissed whom on Friends.
Greg Kinnear is at his smarmy best as Ross's new girlfriend's Nobel-prize-winning ex-boyfriend in "The One with Ross' Grant." Dakota Fanning has a sweet scene with Joey (Matt LeBlanc) in "The One with Princess Consuela" and Anna Faris joins Paul Rudd (Phoebe's husband Mike, a.k.a. Crap Bag in "Princess Consuela") as a recurring cast member in "The One with the Birth Mother."

Friends' final season quickly recovers from the Joey-Rachel misstep to find its consistent and satisfying groove. As each Friend turns in their key to the apartment each had shared at one time or another over the past 10 years in "The Last One," could Friends end on a happier or more poignant note? This final addition to the Friends DVD library, too, rises to the momentous occasion with a more generous package of features, including a lengthy gag reel and reflections from the ensemble. --Donald Liebenson

Let me just say that it is so sad that the show ended. Believe it or not, this season was good for a last season. My gf is an avid Friend's fan, as am I. Buying the collected season discs for her has been the best entertainment investment I've ever made, as she can watch each season's episodes in order, progressing thru all ten seasons & then start over at the beginning [by which time she's forgotten the jokes.] This series is probably the best product of the 1990's, and really stands up to repeated viewing. Enjoy!

This is a perfect choice for the "Friends" lover.

friends has its great reputation already but this season is funny, in a different way, and romantic, in another different way. By the finale, you might shed a tear cuz you'll realize how close you were with friends for 10 years. Plus the happy endings for the gang, you'll miss them. And to you all viewers, I really wish that you and your close ones don't get apart.

    5 out of 5 stars A Very Sweet Story.......2007-05-23

I had to watch this first by myself so I could get all the tears out of the way and then I watched it with my 8 year old daughter and STILL cried, as did she. The documentary begins at the end, the day Barbaro died, at the press conference with the Jacksons and Dr. Richardson, explaining exactly what went wrong and why it was felt that it was just time. Then Barbaro's story is told, by a host of people from those who were at the farm where he was born to his trainer, Michael Matz, his jockey Edgar Prado, other racing afficianados, and of course the Jacksons and Dr Richardson. It also rips to shreds the rumors, spread by those who had no clue, that the motive for Barbaro's extrordinary care was strictly financial. It shows the incredible love that his owners had for him. A love that was not only shared by his owners, trainers, jockeys and those in the racing world but a deep love that eventually was shared by people all over the world. This film gives you a sense of what Barbaro not only could have but in my opinion would had achieved had fate not interviened. This is also shown in the bonus features of all five of Barbaro's races leading up to the Kentucky Derby. There is also footage of the Jacksons discussing the lithograph of the foxhounds in their living room that gave them Barbaro's name, plus a short snippet of his full brother, Nicanor, a yearling colt who will begin his career in 2008. The only disappointment is that they did not tack on the footage of his new full brother, born April 20th on the DVD. This was shown at the end of the version that ran on NBC May 5th after the Kentucky Derby.
This is a MUST have for all Barbaro fans as well as anyone w/a love for horseracing and even those who aren't racing fans.

5 out of 5 stars Brings it all back..........2007-05-06

This is the first of two documentaries (the second is to air on HBO in June) that tells the bittersweet story of a horse that captured the heart of a nation last year. Even the casual "once or twice a year" horseracing fan has to admit that the story surrounding the 2006 Kentucky Derby winner tugs at the heartstrings.
We were astounded by his brilliant Derby, devastated by his subsequent Preakness nightmare, amazed by his sheer will to live, and lastly, heartbroken by the news of his death. The world rallied behind this champion the entire summer and fall and into the winter, and this is the story of those events.

It starts at the end, really - beginning with the day owners Roy & Gretchen Jackson and Barbaro's surgeon, Dr. Dean Richardson, explained why they couldn't go on, and the decision to euthanize was made. The story then goes into detail about the events that came together - the trainer's brush with death in a plane crash and the heroics surrounding it, his Olympic glory, the owners and the story behind Barbaro's name, the birth of Barbaro and his astounding feats on both turf and dirt leading up to the Ky Derby, and his unfortunate mistep in the Preakness Stakes.
It then switches gears to the story of his gallant battle to beat the odds - his lifesaving surgery and healing, the table-turning laminitis, and his deceiving progress which in turn ended up meaning the loss of one of the best horses the world has seen in nearly 30 years.

It brings back all the emotions of joy and fear, hope and sadness - that horseracing is so full of. Barbaro's courage and will to live captivated the world, and not just the horseracing community. It serves to remind us that fame is fleeting, horseracing is full of the highest highs and the lowest lows, and as Gretchen Jackson so rightly said- with love comes grief. But when you have a horse so beloved as Barbaro, it is worth it. So is this DVD.
If you are an avid horseracing fanatic, it will bring tears to your eyes, again. If you are just a casual follower or fan, it still will. Trust me.

Unlike old soldiers, M*A*S*H showed little signs of fading away in its penultimate season. Alan Alda and Loretta Switt were officially saluted with Emmys for their exemplary work this season, and Henry Morgan and David Ogden Stiers received well-deserved nominations. But the overlooked Jamie Farr enjoyed some of his finest half-hours, including "Follies of the Living--Concerns of the Dead" (written and directed by Alda), an episode out of the Twilight Zone in which a fever-wracked Klinger communicates with the spirit of a soldier who has just died and roams the 4077th. Stiers further distinguishes himself in "Sons and Bowlers," in which Winchester lends compassionate support to Hawkeye, who anxiously awaits word of his father's operation, and in a moving scene, opens up about his strained relationship with his own father. Stiers also directed the powerful "Identity Crisis," featuring Joe Pantoliano as a soldier who desperately switches dog tags with a deceased buddy. Another season benchmark is the Emmy-nominated "Where There's a Will, There's a War," in which Hawkeye, trapped on the front lines under heavy fire, composes his will and reflects on what to leave his friends.

M*A*S*H took some hits for perceived preachy self-righteousness in its final years. "Give 'Em Hell Hawkeye," in which Hawkeye writes a protest letter to Harry Truman, and "Blood and Guts," in which Hawkeye gives a sensationalistic war correspondent his comeuppance, are this season's worst offenders. While at times it seems like M*A*SH is marching in place ("Communication Breakdown," in which B.J. goes into a tailspin when he learns his wife has gotten a job stateside, echoes season 8's "Period of Adjustment"), it does so with its usual crack precision that made it one of television's most decorated and beloved series. --Donald Liebenson

As the war drags on, it begins to take a toll on the docs and nurses who, day after day, fight to save the incoming wounded helicoptered in directly from the front lines. But as much as the gang of the 4077 cared for the wounded soldiers, they also cared about each other. And that camaraderie, coupled with a liberal dose of hijinks and hilarity, served to make their tour of duty in Korea an experience none of them would ever forget.

How can anyone not like MASH?? Much better than earlier seasons with Frank Burns.

I purchased season ten along with season eleven for my husbands 60th birthday.
Needless to say he loved them and thanks me each time he watches one of disks.
I have found them to be very enjoyable with out all the commercials to break up the story.

    5 out of 5 stars MASH review.......2007-01-19

This whole series is a great acquisition. It will be used over and over in years to come. I wish they were not stopping with this 11th season.

    4 out of 5 stars M*A*S*H season ten.......2007-01-17

I enjoyed every episode, especially the way the character's are "bonding" (ie. "Hawkeye", and Charles). The season "finale" was lacking the usual flair, (almost seemed like episode "22" was missing), but was still enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Mash: all too true fiction.......2007-01-10

This season is pithier than previous ones, which still have plenty to chew on. In light of our present miliary "adventure", the series is right on. I like it without the obnoxious laugh track.

Equal parts Romeo and Juliet and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Shinobi offers breathtaking cinematography, appealing actors, and ninjas. What more could a movie fan ask for? Released in 2005, Shinobi is set in 17th century Japan, which is dominated by two powerful clans. Oboro is a member of the Iga clan, while her lover Gennosuke is the son of the leader of the Koga clan. Both groups are comprised of expert ninjas who have developed skills unknown to most mortals. When Oboro and Gennosuke meet, they are unaware that by their birthrights, they are mean to hate--not love--each other. When the nefarious Shogun--eager to increase his own power by doing away with both clans--announces that each faction will send in five ninjas to fight to the death, Oboro and Gennosuke are sent in to battle against each other for the honor of their clans. Filled with action (including some computer-generated images to enhance the actors' warrior-like qualities) and romance, Shinobi has the makings of a sweeping epic. Though based on an anime series, the film succeeds as a stand-alone piece of work. Beautifully filmed and well-acted, the film is exciting and heartbreaking, and the viewer senses both hope and doom all the way through the finale. --Jae-Ha Kim

4 out of 5 stars This is a pretty good movie!.......2007-07-07

This is a good movie. yes there are all the lame angles that we've seen in films a million times, like the star-crossed lovers and stuff like that, but the abilities of the fighters were shown pretty good, and there were some really amazing scenes. The female star's "terror gaze" or whatever it was called was something to behold. It started quickly and ended quickly but it was a good ride. Don't rush out and buy it but if you should definitely pick it up!

    5 out of 5 stars Enchanting movie.......2007-06-20

The action is great, the characters interesting, and the visuals are stunning.

The story has been done before, but that can be forgiven. While not on par with the production values of The Hero, or House of Flying Daggers, it is a very good movie that lovers of the genre should not miss.

    5 out of 5 stars Ninja GO.......2007-06-02

I really loved this movie. If you like ninja movies this is one of the best. It gives a little history of Japan so if you know about history you know how it ends but getting to the end is all the fun with the shinobi many skills. I recommend this movie to anyone.

2 out of 5 stars Nice to look at, but..........2007-05-31

Having seen the posters for this movie near the Castle in Iga-Ueno, Mie Prefecture (one of the two actual home towns of Japanese Ninjitsu), I had unrealistically high hopes for it. This flick has nothing to do with real ninjitsu. It's an attempt to cross an Asian Epic/Love Story in the spirit of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon".. with "video game" ninjas who possess ridiculous magical powers and colorful costumes. I suppose it might have been a better movie if it had just been one or the other. Pity, because the lead actors (Odagiri Jo and Nakama Yukie) are pretty good and deserved a better movie. History buffs might note that some of the politics hinted-at in Sunpu Castle are pretty accurate. The CGI version of Sunpu-Jo was pretty interesting in itself, but hardly worth the price of a DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Cannot say anything that would reflect how awesome this movie was!.......2007-05-13

Don't need to say much more than this is a must own movie if you like martial arts or fantasty movies!

Bruce Willis turns on the charm in The Whole Ten Yards, the sequel to the surprisingly popular The Whole Nine Yards. Willis returns as Jimmy "the Tulip," a former professional hitman, now living in Mexico with his bride Jill (Amanda Peet, Igby Goes Down), while his former neighbor Oz (Matthew Perry) lives happily with Jimmy's ex-wife Cynthia (Natasha Henstridge, Species). When mobster Lazlo Gogolak (Kevin Pollak, The Usual Suspects) kidnaps Cynthia to get revenge on Jimmy, Oz has to seek out Jimmy for help--only to eventually discover that there's some incomprehensible secret plan at work. The Whole Ten Yards was created purely because the previous movie made money; the sequel makes not an iota of sense. Willis coasts by on raw charisma, everyone else flounders (Henstridge seems completely bored). Fans of the first movie, however, may enjoy revisiting these antic characters. --Bret Fetzer

    Description

Thanks to falsified dental records, retired hitman Jimmy "The Tulip" Tudeski (Bruce Willis) faked his own death and has taken up a new line of work as a homemaker for his wife Jill (Amanda Peet), a novice assassin who has yet to pull off a clean hit. Suddenly, an uninvited and unwelcome connection to their past appears. It's their former neighbor Oz (Matthew Perry) who begs them to help rescue his wife from the Hungarian mob. The mission mounts into Mafioso mayhem, in this screwball sequel to the 2000 hit comedy The Whole Nine Yards.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Absolute disappointment.......2007-01-27

The Whole Nine Yards is a totally underated film, unfortunately the sequel, despite retaining all the original stars, is a ridiculous mess and should never have been made.

Everyone overacts and it is only its lack of morality and very strange sense of humour that saves it from being a TOTAL turkey (Bruce Willis telling Amanda Peet that he's gonna stab her in the face is a line I never thought I'd hear in a comedy).

4 out of 5 stars "You fell down the stairs...".......2006-06-07

I love this movie for a few reasons. One of those reasons is that I'm a HUGE fan of the previous film 'The Whole Nine Yards' to which this serves as the sequel. The next is the fact that Bruce Willis is one of the best of the underrated actors out there and captivates my attention with every performance he gives. The third, and biggest reason I love this film is a little scene where Jimmy (Willis) and Oz (Perry) visit the local pub and get a little (or a lot) drunk. The whole scene is worth the price of the rental. I guess since it reminds me so much of myself and my friends (I'm an emotional drunk) and the whole morning after thing is so the way it would happen. All in all the laughs are there, some are forced and the gags can be a bit cheesy. 'The Whole Nine Yards' was a far superior film, but this sequel is not without it's moments and Bruce Willis and Matthew Perry are a great comic team. Bruce can tackle everything from action to comedy to drama and should be recognized a little more for that. This may not end up your favorite title but it won't be your least. The premise follows Oz and Jimmy as they try and rescue Oz's wife (Jimmy's ex) from a mob boss trying to get revenge on Jimmy. Amanda Peet plays Jimmy's wife whose fed up with the softy Jimmy has become and is trying to be the tough contract killer that Jimmy once was. There are subplots and a twist at the end that makes this more than a no-brainer, but the fact still remains that the film makes little sense...but it doesn't really matter. Just sit back, relax, don't think about it and enjoy it for what it is...or at least watch the drunk scene, then pop in 'The Whole Nine Yards' and really enjoy yourself.

4 out of 5 stars Sit back, refuse to analyze, and enjoy.......2006-04-04

This film is the sequel to "The Whole Nine Yards," but I saw this movie first. I didn't even know there was a prequel.

The plot: No don't go there. Just don't. You won't find anything coherent, and hunting for it might just spoil the fun.

The cast: Bruce Willis is Jimmy, a retired hitman, in the witness protection program, living in Mexico. Jimmy might have gone a little crazy, but it might be an act. You never find out, for sure, but it doesn't matter. Amanda Peet is Jill, his girlfriend, who wants to be a hit-person. Will she succeed? You don't find out, but it doesn't matter. Natasha Henstridge is Cynthia, Jimmy's ex-wife and Oz's current wife. Is she happy to be away from Jimmy? It doesn't matter. Matthew Perry is Oz, a successful dentist. Does he understand what's going on? No! But, neither will you. It doesn't matter. Kevin Pollack is a Hungarian mob-boss with a quirky accent and a penchant for mangling slang ("It's a piece of pie [not cake]"), and for slapping anyone who dares to notice it or comment.

What does matter? This is a zany, fast-paced comedy, that is equal parts "The Godfather," "The Sting," and something by the Marx Brothers (as directed by the Coen Brothers). It's just weird. It doesn't make much sense, but I stopped trying to make it do that.

Matthew Perry is not my favorite actor, but I really liked him as Oz. Oz was perpetually lost, and his motto could've been, "Will somebody please tell me what's going on?!" I felt the same way, but I just did what he did: he just kept treading water, surviving, and trying to enjoy the ride. That's what I did, and I did enjoy this ride.

5 out of 5 stars Method in madness.......2006-03-06

This is an extremely unusual film in that it is better than the first one - nine yards- which was very good. It has only one disadvantage : you may need, or rather I needed to view it twice to understand what was going on. Not a real disadvantage - I just viewed it for the third time and enjoyed it even more.

2 out of 5 stars A Paltry Shadow of the Original.......2005-07-24

Thanks to falsified dental records supplied by his former neighbor Nicholas Oz Oseransky, retired hitman Jimmy The Tulip Tudeski now spends his days compulsively cleaning his house and perfecting his culinary skills with his wife, Jill, a purported assassin who has yet to pull off a clean hit. Suddenly, an uninvited and unwelcome connection to their past unexpectedly shows up on Jimmy and Jill's doorstep: it's Oz, and he's begging them to help him rescue his wife from the Hungarian mob. To complicate matters even further, the men, who are out to get Oz, are led by Lazlo Gogolak, a childhood rival of Jimmy's and another notorious hitman. Oz, Jimmy and Jill will have to go the whole nine yards--and then some--to manage the mounting Mafioso mayhem.
There isn't much about this film to enjoy. I was hoping it would be a lot funnier than it was, but I just didn't laugh at anything except Kevin Pollack's character who was hard to understand most of the time. I had no problem with the cast, I enjoyed all of their performances. Especially Kevin Pollack and Natasha Henstridge who really made the film at least somewhat watchable. If only Bruce Willis could have had more funny lines, or Matthew Perry been a little funnier, or if Amanda Peet...wait there's nothing wrong with her. Anyway, I can only recommend this to someone who likes the cast but not necessarily the story, otherwise, this movie gets a 5 out of 10 because they did try...to some degree.

Quite a treat for fans of the outrageous animated series, South Park - The Hits: Volume i is a collection of 10 episodes chosen by creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker as their favorites. As seen through the eyes of fictitious elementary school children, South Park is filled with pop culture and political references. Hard to believe, but this seemingly juvenile extravaganza often provides strikingly astute observations on the state of the world. Who would have thought that combining themes like cannibalism, leather daddies, The Lord of the Rings, Catholicism and talking towels intertwined with celebrity parodies of Paris Hilton, John Travolta, Tom Cruise and R. Kelley, would be both eye opening and thought provoking? This set contains all of the aforementioned including some of the grossest of the gross from the series. These particular episodes are the best and the worst (which are sometimes the same thing at the same moment) of South Park and its menagerie of dysfunctional characters. You have to give kudos to a series which not only makes you laugh and think, but can make you physically queasy as well. Not for the faint hearted, this collection gives new meaning to the expression, "so bad it's good." The set also include bonus episodes (these are all regular episodes that will be available on future discs), but the most exiting element is the short, "The Spirit of Christmas," which inspired the series, and is easily as good or better than any episode you've seen. --Rachel Moss

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Collection.......2007-07-05

This collection is a great sampling of recent seasons, these are not my top ten but they all fall in to my top twenty. The one episode that should be in here is "Red Sleigh Down" a christmas special from a couple of years ago.

1 out of 5 stars VERY UNFAIR TO SEASON SET BUYERS! .......2007-06-06

This is the kind of thing that can make me boycott a product! I love South Park and I have bought all the season sets. What do I get for my loyalty?.....Screwed! Why would they include the Santa VS Jesus short for people who are only casual fans of the show? I'll tell you why...they want the true fans to buy something they already have to get a small short not included on the first season that it should have been included on in the first place! I think Comedy Central should offer this short on a upcoming season release or have a mail/give away to whoever bought any season set. This is really iratating, unfair and just plain dumb!

5 out of 5 stars An Introduction to SOUTH PARK.......2007-05-15

When SOUTH PARK first hit the airwaves a decade ago, I had no desire to watch the show. At the time, from those I talked to the show just didn't sound like something I would enjoy. Over time my tastes have changed a bit and after having heard a few months ago about a lesson taught about the educational benefits of SOUTH PARK, I decided to watch an episode on television. I watched one and I was hooked. I wanted to become more acquainted with the series without yet buying a complete season and therefore was able to get my hands on this DVD collection, SOUTH PARK--THE HITS: VOLUME 1.

For those who are already familiar with the show, this DVD collection is will probably be redundant because all of the episodes in this set are now available in each one of the season's collections. The only reason a serious fan might be interested in owning this set is that it includes the short "The Spirit of Christmas" which started the series. That short pilot is available on the Internet, but if I'm not mistaken this is the first time it's available on DVD. That short has Jesus and Santa Clause fighting each other over who will control Christmas.

Though this DVD collection probably won't hold much appeal for series fans, it is a great collection to introduce someone to the series. There are ten episodes selected by Matt Stone and Trey Parker. Each of these episodes includes a brief commentary by Stone and Parker. In addition, there are four bonus episodes and "The Spirit of Christmas" short. As Stone and Parker point out on the commentary to "Stupid Spoiled Whore Video Playset" they had a difficult time coming up with ten episodes that were their "favorites" because they tend to view the newest episode as being their favorite one. However, the collection does include at least three episodes that seem to be their favorites as well as some episodes that were landmark episodes in the series.

My favorites in the collection include:

"The Return of the Fellowship of the Ring to the Two Towers"--Cartman, Kyle, Stan, are sent to take a video from Stan's parents to Butter's parents. The video is supposed to be "The Lord of the Rings" but turns out to be a very hot, and in some states illegal, adult tape. Cartman, Kyle, and Stan do not know this. But everywhere they go people start freaking out when they come in contact with the tape. So, they leave on an epic journey to return to the tape to the video store two towns away. This episode is both a great homage to "The Lord of the Rings" as well as just being a show about the kids just being kids (with a little bit of twisted humor thrown in).

"Best Friends Forever"--Kenny is one of the few lucky kids in South Park to get a PSP when they first arrive in stores. He finally finds something he is good at when he begins playing a war game called, "Heaven Vs. Hell". Kenny reaches level 60, the highest level in the game. While celebrating, he is killed. It turns out the Satan is planning on invading Heaven. God has a plan though and created PSP and used the game "Heaven Vs. Hell" as a way to find a person who would be able to lead the armies of Heaven versus Satan's forces (THE LAST STARFIGHTER anyone?). Kenny is that person, but just as the battle is about to begin, Kenny disappears. Even though he is mentally a vegetable, his body is being kept alive through machines. Cartman wants Kenny to die so that he can get his PSP, but Kyle and Stan think that's just wrong. Cartman thinks he has the power to pull the plug because he and Kenny were BFF's. Thus, a huge national legal battle drenched in media coverage begins. This episode won an Emmy.

"Good Times With Weapons"--Cartman, Kyle, Stan, and Kenny purchase real ninja weapons at a local carnival. They pretend to be ninjas, get in a fight with Butters, and end up going on a journey to return the weapons so they won't get in trouble. The anime style of animation when the kids imagine themselves as ninja warriors is great and the theme song from this episode, "Let's Fighting Love" is a great parody of Japanese pop music.

"Casa Bonita"--Kyle is having a birthday party at the best Mexican restaurant in the world, Casa Bonita. The place has great food, cliff divers, Blackbeard's cave, and a place where you can get your photo taken as an outlaw in jail. Stan and Kenny are invited, but Cartman isn't. Kyle can only invite three people and since Butters invited him to his birthday party, he's just returning the favor. Cartman is furious, but cooks up an unbelievable scheme to get Butters out of the way just so he can go in his place.

"Trapped in the Closet"--this is the episode that has probably received more attention than any other in the South Park collection. The show has Stan joining the Church of Scientology. The people in the church believe Stan is the reincarnation of Ron L. Hubbard. The media surrounds Stan's house and Tom Cruise, John Travolta, and R. Kelly end up living in Stan's closet because Stan doesn't like TomCruise's acting very much. Paramount had the episode pulled from syndication before the release of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III. The episode is hilarious, but isn't that different from many other SOUTH PARK episodes. If it wasn't for the controversy surrounding it, it probably wouldn't be a part of this collection.

"Scott Tenorman Must Die"--Cartman has a trick played on him by an older student, Scott Tenorman. Cartman attempts several times to get revenge, but is embarrassed further each time by Tenorman. Stan and Kyle tell him over and over to just let it go, but he can't. He then sets into motion a plan for revenge reminiscent of something from TITUS ANDRONICUS.

Overall, SOUTH PARK THE HITS: VOLUME 1 is a collection that major fans of the series will find redundant, but is a great set of episodes to introduce someone to the series.

    4 out of 5 stars Great DVDs.......2007-03-09

It's a really great collection of South Park episodes. There is just one thing which is missing: subtitles

5 out of 5 stars Can't wait for Vol. 2.......2007-02-22

This had everything I could have wanted. I'm not a South Park season collector so this was a perfect opportunity for me to own these select episodes that just happen to also be my favorites. My only complaint is that you can't select PLAY ALL to include the Bonus Episodes as well, but no big deal.

To a small Dutch town filled with characters known by such names as Crooked Finger, Loony Lips, and the Mad Madonna, Antonia returns with her daughter Danielle after 20 years away. Covering the next 40 years, Antonia's Line looks at the matriarch and her offspring, stretching out to her great-granddaughter, Sarah. A whimsical story with fairy-tale conventions, this movie deals with the cyclical nature of time as well as the strength of women. While this is not just a "woman's movie," men are regulated to the background in a story that tells of women breaking free of traditional roles. Surprisingly, this movie achieves a light-hearted tone while tackling serious subjects: small-town prejudices, rape, and suicide. Yet the drama's comedic heart shines through as Antonia collects a rather odd assortment of people, outsiders who become part of her extended family. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, Antonia's Line is moving and beautiful, imparting a sense of hope and joy to the viewer. --Jenny Brown

    5 out of 5 stars Antonia's Line.......2007-05-13

This is a charming story! Antonia has courage and heart, and she shows the strength women have. After seeing this film at a friends house, I immmediately went online and ordered my own copy. A must for my collection.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite film of all time!.......2007-04-10

Although I'm not a fan of subtitles these days, this is a classic film that stands out as an exception. Set in the Dutch countryside, Antonia returns to her village from the city to raise her daughter. The film spans maybe 50 years and 4 generations of Antonia's lineage, both literal and figurative because, after all, it takes a village to raise a child. The film is a beautiful fable that illustrates that family is not just your given family (blood relatives), but also comprised of your chosen family--the community around you who are your friends, neighbors, teachers, and for better or worse, also, the town misfits. Each one of these individuals help shape an individual into who he/she becomes as an adult. While the film's theme is matriarchy-based, the message is universal. A feminist classic that I would give to every tween in my life--especially the girls.

2 out of 5 stars Hard to like this film.......2007-02-14

I'm not going to disagree that your view on this film is likely to be colored by your gender. But those who claim that men who are less enthused about the film are motivated by revulsion of feminism or outright misogyny are off the mark. Nor is it about a "female sentiment" being expressed in the film; although perhaps for female audience members there is an affinity created in that the protagonists are female (and additional solidarity created by means of rape as a plot device). Rather I think women will much more appreciate the film's heavy emphasis on relationships - many men simply won't get the appeal. There is really no action in the film per se, but concentrates on material of high interest to women (relationships) and very little of what interests men (action, conflict, or any sort of event-driven activity). Think of this as the cinematic version of girlfriends having a baby or bridal shower - it will appeal to the women while the men could care less.

I would disagree that men are demonized in this film. Not surprising considering the "relationships" angle this film spends most of its time on. Males don't add significantly to the inter-relationships of the female characters, so the men are at best an irrelevancy. Again, think of the bridal shower - it's not so much about male-bashing so much as men are simply a complete afterthought to the point of the event. When men do take a role, it is at worst the villain, more typically simply the foil to showcase the female characters as self-sufficient and "liberated." Men aren't demeaned so much as the best a male can hope to be treated as a peer whom the women tolerate (and most often far less). When it comes to relationships, having a relationship with a male doesn't seem provide any joy, nor does absence.

Once the false male vs. female schism has been disposed of, the film's main problem is that the characters are so unlikable. The main character is shown to be remarkably shallow, self-centered, and not someone who I would want to relate in spite of her role as protagonist.

A scene of mean-spirited gossip from Antonia to her daughter opens the film as a means of introducing the cast. This is followed quickly with the pair attending her mother's deathbed, which showcases Antonia displaying a complete lack of warmth or sense of loss. Indeed Antonia seems to be annoyed at the continued existence of her mother and their interaction is closer to insult and scorn - so much for casting her as a likable character.

Much of the film follows this same arc. Derision of religion and faith is served up repeatedly, although Antonia and family make a point of attending church (evidently the better to enable humor at the priest's and church's expense later on). An older gentleman who attempts to romantically woo Antonia is rebuffed but allowed to perform chores for her, and later bed her as a return favor (although she pointedly refuses marriage). Antonia's daughter asks to conceive a child and hiding the birth from the father, and receives Antonia's help (she sits outside drinking tea with the matchmaker as the sex takes place). Pregnancy does occur and causes the priest to issue a condemning sermon for the unwed mother, which leads to a plot to blackmail the priest who dutifully changes the sermon next week.

Fast forward a few years (with the obligatory and oft-repeated prattle about "and so seasons passed, and life continued on..."). Antonia has a granddaughter child-prodigy whose female teacher is quickly seduced by Antonia's daughter. The granddaughter gets served up heaping helpings of nihilism and atheism by another character (Crooked Finger), although the child's studies are hampered by the noise of the lovemaking of her mother, grandmother, and several other characters. The first of two rapes occurs at this point as well.

In later scenes, the granddaughter gets pregnant and a lively debate occurs at the family dinner table as to whether she should abort or keep the baby. I'm not a prude, but find this entire scene rather distasteful. The reaction of Antonia and the other main characters to news of the pregnancy seems remarkably detached at this turn of events and a second rape, which is another underlying current of this movie. The main characters seem willing to passively accept bad events occurring to others and will materially support them, but have no emotional, moral, or spiritual core to provide to the sufferer. After all, when your point of view on life is that "this is the only dance we dance," what can you really offer the other person when their waltz partner stomps her toes? Likewise, there is no sense of loss, grief, or regret portrayed when hard choices present themselves - for an example, see the dinner table abortion debate above, which is handled with the same degree of gravity as "should I wear the blue or black shoes today?" One choice is as good as any other, so long as Antonia can continue to host her dinner parties.

And on the movie goes, and the premises lead to their natural conclusions, such as the suicide of Crooked Finger (he of the nihilistic philosophy bent). After all, if one takes at face value the points the film makes (life is a tragedy, there is no God, etc), then how can one turn around and feel sorrowful that the characters are living (and dying) according to their own lights? Of course, I suppose this means that Antonia has one less dinner guest.

The values of the entire film leave a bitter taste in your mouth and you start wishing for someone to show genuine emotional, spiritual, and moral growth. As the film slogs on however, that lack of any character being willing to address anything bigger than the immediate, carnal, and baser concerns becomes what makes it impossible to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars "I hope you die in peace, mother. Though that is unlikely.".......2006-08-29

"Antonia's Line" is an unforgettably sincere, quickly moving and always compelling tale of a small Dutch town and an incredible woman who chronicles the lives of deceptively simple, but actually very complex characters. This is just quality film; from beginning to end we are swept into the sometimes grand and sometimes pathetic plights of characters with colorful names like Looney Lips (a mentally handicapped farmhand who is rescued by Antonia from a sociopathic pedophile along with his equally challenged sibling), Crooked Finger (a Schopenhauerian philosopher, bibliophile and absolute recluse who descends further and further into depression), and of course Antonia herself, an independent and free spirited woman who wants to give her daughter, Therese, the chance to experience a life of independent choices without the dictates of men.

Apparently the feminist sentiments expressed in the film have caused some male viewers to grow embittered and insecure. It didn't really bother me that much. The real world is not like this, and nowhere on earth would you find such a politically correct arrangement. It is a MOVIE, and a great one at that.

And Danielle's granddaughter! An ingenious metaphysician who talks about the existence or non-existence of God with the ill-fated Crooked Finger at age 5, this actress' performance was phenomenal. Even when she is in the act of giving birth she has a book in her hands.

The important quality this possesses is the complete lack of artificiality. Life is just how it is, with all the ups and downs, and to these natural beings too much thinking is a negation of life (finally given complete expression by Crooked Finger's suicide). Not the feminism, but this was the only thing that bothered me about the movie: the anti-intellectualism. Analysis is poison, apparently.

This deserved every award it got. I saw it awhile ago and haven't forgotten a thing. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Surprisingly Wonderful Collection of Classics!.......2004-06-09

I bought this DVD because it contained the classic cartoon "Dancing on The Moon". This has been released on DVD before, and it was terrible, with print-through and "augmented" sound that produced a terrible buzzing sound. THIS DVD is not perfect, simply because the original cartoons are not, but it is very good and the quality is better than I have seen. "Dancing on The Moon" is clear, with good color and decent sound. The cartoon is marvelous and has a catchy musical number. It is characterized by a 3-D landscape or "Rotoscope" instead of a painted backdrop. There are 2 other treasures on this DVD. "It's Spring" which has some of the most incredible color to be seen in any vintage cartoon. The animation rivals Disney's "Fantasia" and the overall quality is superb on this one. The other surprise is a cartoon about a mid-western couple visiting the Worlds Fair. The couple become "modern" after visiting the art deco palaces and the mechanical marvels to be seen there. Very amusing and visually a treat. I highly recommend this DVD... and for the price, its a steal!!
