This nostalgic history lesson in the treasures of MGM musicals touches upon the obvious highlights--An American in Paris, Singin' in the Rain, many others--and includes clips of wonderful though more obscure performances by Esther Williams, Jimmy Durante, Eleanor Powell, and even Clark Gable singing and dancing. It's a film lover's box of candy and perfect for musical mavens, and getting a chance to see so many legends host the whole affair (many of whom have died since the film's 1974 release) is as pleasing as the old footage. --Tom Keogh

Elvis, That's the Way It Is.......2007-07-03
Peter Watkins's fascinating biopic about a troubled, nontraditional figure is itself iconoclastic, as it approaches telling Munch's life story through a mosaic of re-enactments, personal diary readings, and faux documentary footage, often repeated for effect. Distant from his father, Munch finds sustenance in a short-lived affair with Mrs. Heiberg (Fraas), a married woman from whom he draws inspiration. Using a variety of sound and color elements to convey Munch's state of mind, Watkins's engrossing film mirrors the inner turmoil of its talented subject.
ELVIS AT HIS BEST ON STAGE IN LAS VEGAS!.......2007-06-17
This is the best footage of Elvis on stage in Las Vegas. The original release included a lot of fan interview footage which was kind of boring, but it also included added footage of Elvis singing songs which were eliminated in the 2001 "Special Edition" version. Both versions are included in this set, so if you don't have both and want them, this is the set for you.

When a slightly cross-eyed Siamese cat named D.C. (Darn Cat) turns up with a wristwatch around his neck instead of a collar, it could be just the clue the FBI needs to crack a series of bank robberies in this lightweight comedy from Disney. The watch belongs to a bank teller who has been taken hostage. Dean Jones stars as the good-hearted FBI agent assigned to the case. Unfortunately, he is highly allergic to, you guessed it, cats. Hayley Mills is D.C.'s doting owner who hatches a hair-brained scheme to follow D.C.'s every move until he returns to the crooks' hideout where he got the wristwatch. After a lot of sneezing, slapstick, and comedic intrigue, the bank robbers are foiled, the hostage is safe, and everyone is happy. An impressive supporting cast of Frank Gorshin, Elsa Lanchester, Roddy McDowall, and Ed Wynn add to the zaniness. Released in 1965 (and remade in 1997), it is understandably dated, but the performances are fun nonetheless. Hayley Mills is delightful as the determined and unflappable wannabe sleuth, and Dean Jones proves he is adept at physical comedy. This is a movie of little consequence, just a clean, fun diversion that the whole family can watch. The theme song is sung by Bobby Darin. --Peggy Maltby-Etra
Description
The fur flies when a smart Siamese cat goes undercover and Hayley Mills and Dean Jones team up for mystery, adventure, and wild comedy on Disney DVD. When the irrepressible and always hungry D.C. (Darn Cat) turns up with a wristwatch for a collar, it becomes a tip-off to an unsolved robbery and kidnapping. You don't know who's tailing who as nosy neighbors, jealous boyfriends, and a highly allergic FBI agent play a game of cat and mouse to crack the baffling case. Don't miss the spectacular supporting cast featuring Dorothy Provine, Roddy McDowall, Frank Gorshin, and Ed Wynn, plus 100 purr-cent feline family fun!
Customer Reviews:
Darn That Cat!.......2007-05-07
I'd been holding out on this title for a widescreen version of the film...which this is not. I am a widescreen snob like so many others but I just could not hold out any more. We have a 42" plasma TV and I'll tell you, the film did not look all that bad. It is stretched but, it doesn't look terrible. I'd prefer a lovely remastered anamorphic widescreen version but, in lieu of not knowing if that will ever happen....this will certainly do.
The movie is a little slow in parts but is a Disney classic. No child of the late 60's or 70's who grew up with Disney live-action movies could deny that this is one for the collection.
That Darn Cat! does deserve a special edition.
Why, oh WHY is this FULL SCREEN???.......2007-04-17
The movie is a delightful romp, with a cast of wonderfully talented actors. This was one of those transition films for Haley Mills, between childhood and adult. Dean Jones was great, and the supporting characters are just that - characters.
HOWEVER: This film was released to theaters in 1965, at a high point in the Disney studio history. It was shot in WIDESCREEN. Why is it now only available on DVD in full screen???
This is a FIVE STAR movie. I give it four stars, subtracting one for the full screen DVD format.
That Darn Cat.......2007-02-09
Still a favorite after all of these years! Cute and charming, with plenty of laughs. Even my "cool" pre-teen boys really enjoyed it.
My All-Time Favorite Comedy.......2006-12-19
This is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. Yet, it is funny without being too silly. Dean Jones was excellent playing what is basically a straight man's role, with some of the other characters (including the cat) being the comedic stars.
The villains are very effective. You can tell from the beginning of the movie we are not dealing with typical comedy villains. One of them, played by Frank Gorshin (a year before he showed up as the Riddler in the Batman TV series). It creates the tension of a woman whose life is in danger, which is the set up for the story.
One of my all-time favorite scenes is where D. C. (for "Darn Cat") is playing with a butterfly in front of a drive thru movie camera. I find it funny . . . but then, I can picture a cat doing that.
This is a timeless comedy classic, and I highly recommend it for a good laugh. U also feel it is safe for children of all ages, though I always recommend parental involvement with any movie or TV series a child watches.
Super movie for cat lovers.......2006-11-24
DC is great, the neighbors are very nosey, wonderful family movie.

In an era when we have an unprecedented number of movies and other diversions at our fingertips, is there still a need for a clip show like That's Entertainment? Certainly, because the film series, beginning in 1974, was an unabashed peddler of glorious nostalgia, not only collecting many of the most memorable moments in the magical history of the MGM musical--and therefore in the history of film--but bringing in many of the original stars to introduce them decades later. And another few decades after the series was released, the nostalgia is that much greater since many of those stars are now gone. In addition, the sheer number and variety of clips (though they're often too short) would be hard to match in any collection or in the span of an evening's viewing. Where else could you enjoy Gene Kelly singin' in the rain and also James Stewart crooning "Easy to Love"? Or follow fun trends like the Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland "let's put on a show" pictures, of which Rooney says "only our names seemed to change"? Following the surprising box-office success of the initial film, Part 2 was released in 1976 and it still had plenty of famous and obscure clips (remember Bobby Van?), and even a nod to the nonmusical films of the era such as the Hepburn-Tracy pictures. It topped everything off with the irresistible pairing of hosts Kelly and Fred Astaire, who share a dance--for only the second time in their careers--at the ages of 64 and 77, respectively (and a more graceful 77-year-old you never will see!). The third film wasn't made until in 1994 (host Kelly is strikingly older), but it offered more of the usual fare plus a variety of cut numbers by such stars as Judy Garland, Lena Horne, and Debbie Reynolds. A half-century later, Hollywood's valentine to the movie musical was still shining strong.
The DVD trilogy set offers all three films with the choice of widescreen anamorphic or full-screen formats (don't worry, the clips are in their original aspect ratio). There's also a two-sided fourth disc with supplemental material, most interestingly the "musical outtakes jukebox," a 16-song, 49-minute collection of numbers that were cut from musicals of the era. None of the selections are Great Songs, but it's hard to discount any musical number from the MGM vaults, for example, three selections by Garland and two by Horne (only one of which, Garland's "Mr. Monotony," appears in TE3, and there in a slightly shorter form). The rest of the content is behind-the-scenes documentaries, the most significant being "That's Entertainment: The Masters Behind the Musical" (37 minutes, profiling the talent behind the films such as Arthur Freed and Michael Kidd), "That's Entertainment III: Behind the Screen" (1994, 53 minutes), and vintage black-and-white footage of MGM's 25th anniversary celebration (10 minutes). Not included in the set: the 1985 compilation That's Dancing, which is also deserving of a DVD release. --David Horiuchi
Description
Includes That's Entertainment, That's Entertainment Part 2, That's Entertainment III, and a bonus fourth disc entitled That's Entertainment: Treasures from the Vault, available exclusively with the Giftset featuring more than five hours of exciting extras including three great documentaries, premiere night coverage and salutes to the great behind-the-camera talents, TV specials, making-of featurettes, plus an extensive video jukebox of rare, star-packed musical outtakes from classic films, and more!
Customer Reviews:
Excellent series which was WAY too late in coming!.......2007-06-27
This combines a group of movie clips that both the musical lover AND those who things musicals are "dumb" will enjoy. The clips where the musical stars are doing what they do best is the best of the best; the clips where the actors are attempting to sing is some of the best compilation footage out there today, and a real laugh! It provides a glipse into what was one of the great motion picture studios in the history of Hollywood (California), and a tribute to those people who created the foundation for a medium that sometimes gets lost in trying spread a message. This collection pays homage to a time when movies weren't out to change the world, but to make the world a better place if even for only a few hours at a time.
For years, this has been something that people had wanted on DVD, but it took almost 25 years for this to make it into DVD format, and with that, the print is excellent. However, don't be worried that your DVD player is in the wrong mode (widescreen or 4:3): it is how the movie was shot. Remember: there was a time when widescreen did not exist, and this shows us what happens when you widen the screen for more picture AND more sound.
Some of the greatest stars ever to grace a movie screen are in this collection: Elizabeth Taylor, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Judy Garland (known as the biggest star MGM created by historians), Mickey Rooney (truly one of the film industry's finest actors), Lena Horne, Ava Gardner, Jimmy (James) Stewart, Liza Minelli, Clark Gable and so many others. The moments with Clark Gable trying to sing and dance make you glad he decided not to do it anymore; it was wartime (World War II), and many of the folks were off fighting the war.
Growing up, the movies this collection features in its clips were films that were only seen on television in showcases like "The Million Dollar Movie" and such, with black-and-white televisions at first, then color sets. Because MGM did their best to make sure this collection was thorough and complete, when a movie is in widescreen (Cinescope), it is presented that way ... unlike that of the modern day pan-and-scan film edits we see on TV today.
If you have young children, I believe this is a bit of history in Hollywood that even they will enjoy, especially if they enjoy more of the standard, mellower music of our times. The songs that were introduced by these films are now considered standards, and have stood the test of time, unlike so much of what we hear today. Though we've progressed in so many ways, the phrase, "They don't write 'em like that anymore" really does apply to the music in these clips.
In a day and age when Hollywood is rediscovering the power of the movie musical, perhaps the directors and producers, as well as cinemetographers, can look to these films as something that has endured a test of time, and was proven effective in helping the world when it was so much in need of cheering-up. Remember the old song: "Forget your troubles, c'mon get happy ... " This film collection will make even the crabbiest person smile, if for only a little while.
For more historical information on MGM, and the rise and near collapse of the studio, I recommend the series, "When the Lion Roared" --- you and your kids can learn a lot for it.
Absolutely wonderful!.......2007-06-27
I remember when these films first came out and they were a runaway success, much more so than anyone could have predicted. Anyone who is at all interested in musicals, and even if they're not, will love this collection of clips which represent truly the best studio for the genre. They show MGM at its greatest, and I'm sorry to say, we will never see anything like that studio again. But as Liza Minelli said in the first one, "Thank God for film." At least we can still see what made them so great and cherish them forever.
Pure Genius.......2007-05-19
A great DVD. It will never be again that so many stars appear in one box set! It is truely a great insight into the world of MGM and the large part it plays in history. What more can i say, it's GREAT!
You want Musicals - You Got Musicals!.......2007-05-12
The best collection of scenes from various MGM musicals over the years available without a doubt. This first "That's Entertainment" is much longer than I thought but features many favorites scenes from a wide variety of MGM musicals. It is hosted by a wide variety of stars (including Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Stewart, Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire.) And a great part is it was shot on the now non-existent MGM Back Lot (most of what you see in the wraps no longer exists.) Parts 2 and 3 include more scenes from various films and a few different perspectives - part 3 shows how well rehearsed Fred Astaire would be with his dances.) If you like movie musicals, this collection is a MUST!
Great Fun.......2006-11-11
I recommend this collection to anyone who loves movies, especially musicals. It is wonderful to see my favorite musical stars in their heyday. The liner notes don't help with scene selection but the on screen scene selection is good. It will take you a while to get through all the material.

One electrifying hour of Sesame Street music and magic commemorates its 35th anniversary in this collection of 17 classic songs paired with a star-studded guest list. Superhero Grover provides the thematic storyline for musical merriment as he embarks on a mission to discover the "one special song the world can sing together." It's a difficult task since everyone in the Sesame Street cast has an opinion. Beginning with the opening number, "Sing" (which gives cameos to Ben Stiller, Conan O'Brien, the Dixie Chicks, and more), the tunes come in rapid succession along with the usual bantering and balderdash of Kermit, Oscar, and the gang. There is no shortage of hilarity, whether watching Wayne Brady sing "Between" sandwiched in the middle of Big Bird and Snuffy; or Queen Latifah belt a rap rendition of "That's the Letter O." It is no wonder that Sesame Street remains timeless with such servings of exquisite entertainment targeted at youngsters yet enjoyed by all. (Ages 3 to 8) --Lynn Gibson
Customer Reviews:
Sesame Street - What's the Name of That Song.......2007-03-25
My two year old loves this movie. We have a couple Sesame Street DVD and this is the best. And since I have to watch it also, it helps that I love it too!
Wonderful tape for kids!.......2007-01-10
I had a chance to see this DVD last year before I even became pregnant. My little cousin (2 yrs old) was viewing it and I fell in love with it-- especially after hearing Patti LaBelle's version of the ABC's! My son is now 8 weeks old and we were watching Sesame Street the other day when the episode aired with Patti singing. I immediately remembered the tape and after MUCH research, I've located and ordered the DVD for my infant. I am really looking forward to him hearing and seeing it!!!!
A Must Buy Sesame Street Video.......2007-01-05
We have numerous Sesame Street videos and this by far is the best one we've purchased. A great introduction to all of the characters, as well as the inclusion of old and new Sesame Street songs and skits. My two year old loves it, especially the Patti LaBelle alphabet song and Bert's Pigeon song. A great addition to kids' video collections.
Keeps my sons attention and loves all the songs and music........2006-12-19
My son truly loves this video and he has learned so much from it. It follows a story line throughout the DVD and has tons of songs and entertainment for my 17 month old. I also purchased the 25th anniversary DVD and he loved that one too. Now my son is obsessed with sesame street and I am actually very happy with how much he has learned from these DVD's. I suggest getting this video for you little one. I know it keeps my son entertained and occupied throughout the whole video.
I just can't get it out of my head!.......2006-08-14
"La de da de dum, la de da de dum...what's the name of that song"? Well, for sure, it is stuck in my head. My 2 year old just loves this dvd, and starts singing the title song whenever he wants to watch it, which, by the way, is daily. Or even several times a day even. Anyway, it is a delightful combination of new Sesame Street footage and older song tidbits like Bert singing and dancing "Doing the Pigeon". It starts out with Super Grover, Big Bird, and Elmo trying to find that "one favorite song" that the whole world can sing along, and they check with everyone along their path to find out what their favorite song is. If your child (or you) love music, you will not be dissappointed in this dvd. I know that I'm not.

Megadeth - That One Night -.......2007-05-14
This product is so good because I was there and remember me the passion of the people of Buenos Aires to one of the greatest heavy metal band of the world.
Megadeth : "That One Night - Live In Buenos Aires".......2007-05-12
I was anxiously awaiting this, and rushed home to watch it as quickly as a I could after buying it. Needless to say, this isn't anything special from Megadeth in my opinion. The set list is great, but the concert / band line-up itself is weak in my opinion....
What really bothered me more than anything about this live performance was the sound production. You can hardly even hear Dave playing most of the time, and it's almost as if he's not even plugged in. He's playing all the licks, but you just can't hear them clearly. On top of that, the vocals get buried in the background a lot here too. All around, this was not a very well mixed concert performance....
I was highly disappointed. "Rude Awakening" is a much better / tighter performace in my opinion...
At last.......2007-05-09
this is a very godd DVD not only becasue is megadeath but becasue is a great show and the last one
SImply awesome.......2007-05-08
This is a very awesome concert, definitely worth the money. It was a bit lacking in special features, but hey, you don't buy a concert for the special features, even though they are a nice thing to have. They play a good variety of songs from many different albums, including a rare performance of Ill be There. Plus, Dave sings part of Trust in spanish. I thought this was a plus, even though I dont speak a word of spanish, I like it when bands do something special with songs when they play them live. If you are a metal fan, this concert is a must see for sure.
Carry the torch!.......2007-05-08
Dave carries the torch for solid hard rock music as it seems no one else can. I use to by music every month, now I just wait for select artists to release the goods as there is not much out there these days.
Dave always delivers.
The vibe from the audience is amost haunting as they sing the guitar parts as well as the lyrics! Had to be an incredible rush for the performers.
A must have.

This 1970 concert documentary captures Elvis Presley midway through a fateful transition, seeking to reclaim his musical primacy after a decade of self-imposed exile from concert stages. Sidelined by his big-screen career, eclipsed by rock's mid-'60s transformations, the King had begun his return two years earlier with the relatively lean attack of his fabled network television appearance, '68 Comeback Special. Now the Memphis legend was poised to reposition his performing profile by pursuing the top rungs of headliner status in Las Vegas, a career choice that seems even more ephemeral in hindsight than it already did at the time.
Elvis: That's the Way It Is follows the show's genesis from rehearsal to stage, with the performance footage that provides its inevitable climax shot over six nights. The rehearsal footage, expanded for this special edition, offers further proof that Presley's band was simply superb: stripped of the orchestrations and lush choral arrangements that would be grafted onto the stage show, the sextet sounds both tough and nimble. In performance, we're treated to a mostly riveting glimpse of Presley in top vocal form, poised at the brink of bombast. This is Elvis before the onset of portentous Richard Strauss overtures, karate kicks, and tossed scarves, kicking off the show with the classic "That's All Right." If he risks undercutting the punch of his early songs with self-deprecating clowning, he attacks two Ray Charles classics with gusto. The special edition also boasts digitally remastered visuals, crisply remixed Dolby audio, alternate versions that replace the original performances of several tracks (including the extended vamp of "Suspicious Minds"), a theatrical trailer, and a new documentary on the restoration of the film. --Sam Sutherland

Elvis at his prime!.......2007-07-05
This DVD is absolutely wonderful...a compilation of his first appearances in Las Vegas after being off stage making movies for several years. He looks so good, sounds great and is forever the showman! My grandchildren like to watch it and my grandson loves to stand in front of the TV and imitate Elvis.....another generation to be charmed by Elvis!
A blast of Elvis!.......2007-04-26
Hey, whatever happend to "I just Can't Help Believin'? This song is cut out from the concert footage. What a drawback...!
The scenes before the concert at a recording session with the guys makes up for the cut out or lost scenes. "I just can't help believin'"
Elvis, a gift from heaven and wonderful to explore his singing ability.
Elvis rocks away his inhibitions if indeed he has them.
Follow the course, watch this movie and learn.
Elvis marks your inhibitions and rejects them, they're not yours anymore.
"Elvis is not dead, he's dad"
Terrific.......2007-04-20
What a character Elvis was! This dvd gives insight into the complicated person Elvis was in terms of his humor, gifts, generosity of spirit, faith, ambitions, and humanity in a person who was so talented and good looking as to be veritably worshipped by so many. Amazing he kept as self-effacing a perspective as he did. So wish the lifestyle hadn't taken him down.
That's The Way It Is DVD.......2007-04-12
Elvis in his prime, with more concert footage than the original, if I am not mistaken. That's the Way It Is is also my favorite Elvis album.
A Must Have for Elvis Fans.......2007-03-10
If you are an Elvis fan, you will Love this DVD. If you are somewhat of an Elvis fan, you will be a bigger fan. It gives you a little look into Elvis as a person, and a lot of Elvis as a performer live in concert at the former International Hotel in Vegas. The DVD has been digitally remastered and has excellent audio and video.

One of the most talented animators of the silent and early sound eras, Ub Iwerks designed the physical appearance of Mickey Mouse. He animated the first Mickey shorts almost single-handedly, doing more than 700 drawings in a single day. Iwerks's animation was rubbery, weightless, and appealing, but his approach was at odds with the increasing realism Walt Disney sought. In 1930, he left Disney to start his own studio, but despite his talent--and the exceptional animators who worked for him--he produced old-fashioned, unfunny cartoons that couldn't compete with the more sophisticated storytelling and brash gags in the shorts from Disney, the Fleischers, Warner Bros., and MGM. In 1940, Iwerks returned to the Disney studio, where he won Oscars for his innovations in optical printing and traveling mattes.
The most entertaining films on this disc are the campy musicals such as "Humpty Dumpty" (1935), with its Busby Berkeley chorus of dancing eggs, and the jazz-inflected "Little Boy Blue" (1936). Typically, the title character in "The Valiant Tailor" (1934) is a round-headed nonentity who scares off the Giant by making a hive of bees sting him; he never comes alive, the way Mickey Mouse does in Disney's "Brave Little Tailor" (1938). --Charles Solomon
Description
Volume 1 of a celebration of the pioneering solo cartoon work of Ub Iwerks, Walt Disney's foremost animator/collaborator in the formative early years. The first fully animated color cartoon version of "Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp" (1934)...the legendary Flip the Frog in the slapstick masterpiece "The New Car" (1931)...the original cartoon adaptation of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," "The Headless Horseman" (1934)...the little-known animation star Willie Whopper in the surrealistic sci-fi classic "Stratos Fear" (1933)...and a famous "lost" film, a full-color cartoonization of "Don Quixote" (1934). These are just a few of the 58 cartoons captured on these two DVDs (available separately) of rediscovered masterworks from the very beginnings of the Golden Age of American Animation.

Forgotten Cartoons.......2007-01-19
We gave this DVD to our 46 year old son for Christmas per his request.
I'm sure he'll enjoy hours of enjoyment from these forgotten cartoons. This will be added to his DVD library of old cartoons.
Great for cartoon fans, but maybe a little dull for everyone else.......2006-05-29
I'm a huge fan of classic animation from the 30's, so I'm delighted to have this large collection at such a great price. But I do think people who prefer the laughs of Warner Bros. or the polish of Disney shorts will be disappointed. Flip the Frog and Willie Whopper aren't exactly household names, and it's not hard to see why. The cartoons, though well-made, lack much personality and the action is too often repetitive.
The picture and sound quality varies from fair to good, with many of the ComicColor 'toons looking a bit washed out. Flip, in basic black & white, at least looks better than the color cartoons in this collection.
Still, for the price, it's worth having if you're into this sort of thing.
Historical collection, and quite interesting........2005-11-02
Many of the other commentators of Volume 1 and Volume 2 have very nicely described the contents of these two collections. I'd like to just say that I found these cartoons to be very essential for anyone interested in the history of animation.
Flip the Frog comes across as another Mickey Mouse, Willie Whopper is somewhat interesting, while the Comicolor series is somewhat similar to Silly Symphonies. I'm not surprised at this since Ub worked at Disney, and is responsible for the early animation of Mickey Mouse and several Silly Symphonies.
I found the liner notes helpful in explaining the social context of these cartoons. Many are poking fun at the Hollywood stars of the day (Disney and Warner also have several of their own similar cartoons), others have relevant commentary about various conditions in our country at the time, and others are just interesting trips into the supernatural. Keep in mind that all these things have been pursued by Disney, Warner Brothers, etc., so there is nothing unusual here. There are plenty of sight gags and the usual exaggerations that early cartoons are especially known for.
Also, I think it would be fair to say that the characters and stories as a whole tend not to progressively develop over the short life of Ub's studio. If you treat all the cartoons simply as individual accomplishments, then it's not a big deal, but as a whole they don't really change much. This isn't necessarily a problem, just an observation.
It's kind of interesting to me that I always felt I was almost watching Disney cartoons, but at the same time there are definitely other edgier influences at work here. The fact that Ub's staff of animators largely came from the Fleischer studio, and included Betty Boop's creator, made the difference. Because of this, innuendo abounds in several of Flip's cartoons, produced from 1930-1933 (pre-Code era). One cartoon, "The Milkman" ends with Flip and the kid singing "Hail, Hail, the gang's all here", and the horse responds by singing "What the hell do we care?". The second time around, as the horse startes to sing the same response, Flip bashes him over the head with a milk bottle to stop him from using the "naughty" word. Holy cow!!! Can you imagine Disney doing this? In "The Office Boy", the sexual innuendos hit a high, especially with the secretary. I was laughing for being taken by surprise. I didn't expect this sort of content. Well, get ready for an interesting time. By the way, unless I'm mistaken, it seemed like Volume 2 was the one for the edgier cartoons. Willie Whopper's cartoons are not too bad, really. They are tall tales told by a kid. Lastly, the Comi-Color cartoons, though fairly delightful, never measure up to the quality of Disney's Silly symphonies. I'd have to say that they are probably the highest quality cartoons Ub produced.
Both DVD cases say that these cartoons are "now viewed for the first time on DVD in unfaded, pristine prints from the orginal negatives". I must protest! Many of these cartoons don't look or sound pristine at all, but are in many cases faded and dirty, with sound to match. It depends on the cartoons. Most of the Flip cartoons aren't so bad, the Willie Whopper ones are the worst of these two collections, and The Comi-Color cartoons all seem to have a softness about them (video and audio). I'd say that perhaps this is the best we can get our hands on, but, really, to say "unfaded, pristine prints" is just flat-out not the case. Overall, most of them are quite watchable, but just keep these observations in mind. I give both collections four stars due to the technical issues.
Worths every penny.......2004-12-31
The effort and creativity put into these cartoons are commendable. And it's really such a different style from cartoons today.
Fantastic DVD.......2004-06-23
It's about time that a company focused its attention on Ub Iwerks. The Cartoons That Time Forgot, are literally just that, cartoons that have not seen the light of day from the time they were made. Ub Iwerks got his start working for Walt Disney, and animated the earliest Mickey Mouse cartoons as well as some of the early Silly Symphonies.
These cartoons clearly show some influences from the Disney studios, some characters look amazingly Mickey Mouseish, and many have the same charm of the Disney shorts. These cartoons are a good introduction to some cartoon characters that never quite caught on, like Flip the Frog and Willie Whopper (who?).
If you are a vintage animation lover, then this DVD belongs in your library!

Ub Iwerks was one of the greatest animators of the silent and early sound eras: he animated "Steamboat Willie" and other early Disney shorts virtually by himself. But the films he produced at his own studio after breaking with Walt Disney in 1930 lack the vitality of his earlier work. During the '30s, the animators with Disney, the Fleischers, Warner Bros., and MGM developed a new style of cartoon humor that centered on characters with strong, recognizable personalities. Iwerks's first recurring character, Flip the Frog, who appears in more than half the cartoons in this collection, never developed into a wholesome good guy or a sarcastic antihero. He remained an observer, rather than someone who initiated the action, as Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny did. The rambling plots further weaken these films. Flip stumbles into a haunted house in "Spooks" (1932), but the artists can't decide if they're trying to be funny or scary, and the film falls between two chairs. The garish colors and bizarre designs in "Balloon Land" (1935) have a camp appeal, but the inflatable hero and heroine and the spiny villain simply aren't very interesting. Iwerks's cartoons unfortunately remain less than the sum of their parts, but this disc (in unison with Vol. 1) offers an interesting historical perspective on the development of popular animation. --Charles Solomon

Volume 2 contents.......2005-01-14
26 cartoons fill up this volume for 190 minutes worth of cartoon nostalgia. Some of the humor isn't "politically correct", and some of it is a bit ribald, but the cartoons are for the most part entertaining. All but five of the cartoons star the character of "Flip the Frog", a character best taken in small doses (in watching all the cartoons at once, the humor wears a bit thin.) All the Flip cartoons are in black and white, as is one of the Willie Whopper cartoons. The remaining four cartoons are in color, three of which stand alone. The fourth was apparently released at different times under "Famous Fairytales" (as on this disc) and "Willie Whopper" labels.
Here is a list of the disc's contents:
1) Flip the Frog / The Nurse Maid (1932)
2) Flip the Frog / Room Runners (1932)
3) Flip the Frog / The Office Boy (1932)
4) Flip the Frog / The Milkman (1932)
5) Flip the Frog / The New Car (1931)
6) Flip the Frog / Ragtime Romeo (1931)
7) Flip the Frog / What a LIfe (1932)
8) Flip the Frog / The Bully (1932)
9) Flip the Frog / Funny Face (1932)
10) Flip the Frog / Movie Mad (1931)
11) Flip the Frog / The Cuckoo Murder Case (1930)
12) Willie Whopper / Stratos Fear (1933)

It's as good if not better than Volume 1 of Cartoons That Time Forgot. The episodes are a bit more wierd in this volume. Hope there will be a Volume 3 coming out soon.

Bought this expecting a DVD of the classic comi-color cartoons.
Almost the entire thing was Flip the Frog cartoons. Black and white. Not bad but not what I hoped it would be. Disappointing.

This concert film becomes gripping, moving, and triumphantly funny when Margaret Cho stops with the "fag-hag" jokes and gets real in recounting her ill-fated sitcom and its devastating effects on her mental and physical well-being. In the spirit of Richard Pryor talking about his infamous freebasing accident in Live on the Sunset Strip and Julia Sweeney discussing caring for her cancer-stricken brother in God Said, "HA!", Cho's account of her ill-conceived 1994 ABC sitcom All American Girl is victorious, a "you go, girl" call to empowerment. Her happiness at finding mainstream acceptance was short-lived when the network expressed concerns about her weight. A desperately insecure Cho proceeded to lose 30 pounds in a month and wound up in the hospital with kidney failure. Even more humiliating was the special consultant hired to instruct her how to appear "more Asian." Cho recalls receiving a phone call after the show's premiere from an enraged Quentin Tarantino, her then-boyfriend, who screamed at her, "They took your voice!" The capper was when her show was cancelled to make room for The Drew Carey Show ("Because he's so thin," Cho asides). Drink, drugs, and promiscuous sex followed, until Cho gave herself a wake-up call. "I'm not going to die because I failed as someone else," she proclaims. "I'm going to succeed as myself." This is the one Cho's legion of devoted fans want. More sensitive viewers are advised to fast-forward through the raunchier bits. --Donald Liebenson

Hilarious! Touching........2007-05-06
One learns a lot about Cho from this DVD. While maintaining hilarity, Cho tells the story of her time as a child star, and her battle with weight disorders.
Very great, and a definite purchase for a Cho fan.
Pretty funny, but a little too much info at times..........2007-04-16
I like this film quite a bit. Normally, I don't get into standup comedy films, but I like Margaret Cho for the most part. She is usually very funny, and her audience is really having a good time here. Some of my favorite parts are where she impersonates her mother and that ABC hired an "Asian consultant" for her horrible sitcom. The mother bit is hilarious, and the ABC bit is hilarious as well as outrageous (maybe the folks at ABC didn't realise that Korea is considered part of Asia). I did object to when Margaret talks about how she became a drunk, drugged out tramp after the sitcom was cancelled. The term she used was she gave a lot of unnecessary h**d. I understand that she needs to vent, but I don't really like to hear too much about the sordid details of her private life, and I doubt that her current husband cared for it that much either (guys do not like to hear their current squeeze's past, no matter how "open minded" they are). I'm glad she's cleaned up, and I hope she stays that way. She doesn't really go into too much political stuff here, which is good. Too often Margaret's poiltical rantings become shrill and humourless, like a lot of political rantings tend to do. But here she stays clear of that, which makes this one of the better comedy concert films.
Stick It In!, My Name is Gwen and I'm Here to ...Get a Driver's License........2007-03-07
Love, love, love, love, love Margaret Cho's I'm the One That I Want (and really all of her stand up films). It could be because she makes me want to laugh so hard that my body simply cannot facilitate the amount of laughter desperate to escape and I find myself on the verge of convulsions. Or it could be because she is one of the best social commentators of all time. It could be because she is so beautiful in every way and that she's an uninhibited, intelligent individual of a woman...or because she is aware--aware that all of us (at least us everyday freaky, yet normal, folks) desperately need to know that we're not alone in this world that seems so full of self-righteousness. That we don't need to feel so ashamed of our actions, our bodies, our minds. She frees us from that in telling us, hysterically, her own stories of how easy it can be to lose oneself in the quest for acceptance. One of the most profound moments in the film is her heartbreaking story about being signed on for a sitcom based on her own life that wound up forcing her to become someone she wasn't at all, which ultimately compromised her strong voice in the process. Well, her voice ain't lost now! In this film, she is back and she is stronger than ever. (and that strength continues to be reflected in Notorious, Revolution and Assassin...oh, and on her Web site and various other projects). You Go, Girl!
You Gotta Meet Gwen.......2006-12-29
I'm not exaggerating. This is a 5 star comedy show. My friend showed this to me and I laughed my butt off. Margaret Cho is fun-nee. The stories she tells are amazing. My favorite is definitely "The Gwen Story". My friend and I still talk that one up. And of course what would a Cho show be without impersonations of her mother. This is a genuine riot. If you haven't seen it yet, repent and see it now.
Very funny and not for the kiddies!.......2006-07-28
I laughed so hard I had tears come down my face. That woman is so funny! I love when she does her mother. And this one part where she is in the hospital and the nurse's aide comes to her bed and growls loudly "I'M GWENDOLYN, AND I'M HERE TO WASH YOUR V****A!" What a hoot! Her parents were in the audience for the first time. I wish the camera panned over to them so I could see the expressions on their faces!

--Tom Keogh

That's Entertainment.......2007-07-04
What makes this dizzying whirl of spectacular montages so much fun is the mix of famous sequences with colorful lesser-known bits, like Clark Gable's rendition of "Puttin' on the Ritz," Jimmy Stewart's serenade in "Easy to Love," and Jean Harlow vamping up "Reckless." Narrated by a roster of screen legends, Haley's magnificent homage to the big-budget musicals of yesteryear was a surprise box-office hit for MGM in 1974, and led to two sequels. Pure movie magic from start to finish, "That's Entertainment!" will sweep you off your feet.

Some of the very best from "The Dream Factory".......2007-03-23
Dear Mr. Gable,
I am writing this to you
And I hope that you will read it so you'll know
My heart beats like a hammer
And I stutter and I stammer
Every time I see you at the picture show.
I guess I'm just another fan of yours
And I thought I'd write and tell you so.
You made me love you
I didn't wanna do it, I didn't wanna do it.
You made me love you
And all the time you knew it, I guess you always knew it.
You made me happy, sometimes you made me glad.
But there were times, sir, you made me feel so sad.
You made me sigh 'cause
I didn't wanna tell you, I didn't wanna tell you
I think you're grand, that's true
Yes I do, 'deed I do, you know I do.
I must tell you what I'm feeling
The very mention of your name
Sends my heart reeling.
You know you made me love you!
MGM's "Dream Factory" specialized in the artistic and technological development of the Hollywood musical; and this DVD proves it. The producers and editors have culled footage from dozens of films to illustrate MGM's successes at producing musicals that still enchant their audiences today. The singing, dancing and acting remain unsurpassed in movie history.
That's Entertainment uses a variety of their biggest stars as narrators for the film's many segments. Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Bing Crosby, Peter Lawford, Liza Minnelli, Frank Sinatra, Debbie Reynolds and Elizabeth Taylor are among the MGM stars who both narrate and perform in clips from the MGM vaults.
And wow, how that footage will astound you! They just don't make them with such care, style and grace as they used to. Rarely does a musical come out these days that can even hold a candle to the musicals honored here. We get two wonderful collages of film clips of Judy Garland singing her heart out; Fred Astaire dancing with a hat rack and even on the ceiling in Royal Wedding and Donald O'Connor performing the humorous "Make 'Em Laugh" from Singing In The Rain. We also see the immortal Maurice Chevalier performing "Thank Heaven For Little Girls" from the movie Gigi. In addition, the ballet scenes from Seven Brides For Seven Brothers and An American In Paris will stun you.
The color is excellent and even the older black and white footage is rather good quality. We also see how right from the start of sound "talkie" movies MGM pushed all it's stars into a musical even if they were truly fitted for the job or not. Look for clips of dramatic actors including Clark Gable singing and dancing; Jean Harlow singing in Reckless and Robert Montgomery singing in an early musical, too.
As for the dancing, Joan Crawford dances exceptionally well in Dancing Lady; Eleanor Powell dances to new heights with Fred Astaire in Broadway Melody of 1940; and Judy Garland dances wonderfully with Mickey Rooney in several numbers from the movies they did together at MGM.
That's Entertainment stands as a documentary produced to document its own achievements at making high quality musicals that have stood the test of time; therefore there need be no plot for a movie such as this one. The story of the development of the MGM musical is told as chronologically as possible; and the film merely goes back and forth between the narrators speaking on camera and the priceless film clips from these great movie musicals. Don't be fooled, however; That's Entertainment does a stupendous job of proving that MGM did indeed have "more stars than there are in all the heavens."
The DVD offers few extras. You get the theatrical trailer and an introduction by Robert Osborne of the Turner Classic Movies TV channel. One side of the DVD is widescreen and the other side has the movie in standard format without black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. If you want to view the film in widescreen format, for example, simply insert the DVD that side up into your DVD player and you will then be able to watch this movie in widescreen format. The same goes for the standard format. You won't need extras anyway, the film stands so tall and so strong on own that you won't feel disappointed in the slightest when you finish watching it!
If you want to find out what REALLY good musicals and movie production are all about, That's Entertainment is an excellent place to start. I highly recommend this film not just for movie buffs but also for people who want to begin the serious study of the development of Hollywood films and especially the greatest of Hollywood musicals.
That's Entertainment.......2007-03-14
Both 1 and 2 are outstanding. I got them to show my grandchildren that movies were at once wholesome and entertaining. The likes of which we will never see again.
Great stuff.......2006-12-20
This is really two movies in one. The first is the documentary about the history of MGM musicals which starts out a bit slowly before you get to the good stuff. There are quite a few scenes where still living Hollywood retirees walk towards the camera on the steps of office blocks, like car dealership commercials and start talking to the camera, before fading to voice over, and then to the actual clips. This is interesting stuff for people who like documentaries.
Then there is another movie trying to get out, which is a wonderful compendium of the best song and dance and production numbers from a slew of MGM musicals. The best scenes are absolutely stunning and feature Fred Astaire, Esther Williams, Gene Kelly, and the amazing Make Them Laugh number by Donald O'Connor from Singing in the Rain. Also some nice stuff from Gigi. This movie has a wider general appeal, so it is a pity that there is not an all clips movie.
I suppose the on screen appearences of the retired stars would have been a nice treat for the original viewers in the 70's, when the stars were still alive, but now that they are gone it is the actual scenes that we want to see.
Still, this is great stuff.
