Product Description
Even the most hard-hearted will get misty eyes when the elderly Irish immigrant tells of his first view of Ellis Island and the "golden lady" in New York Harbor. People were weeping with joy, he recalls, still tearing up, and he couldn't help but fall down in prayer. To newcomers in the early 1900s, the United States was a land of hopes and dreams, and Ellis Island was the gateway, offering new soil for their first step. This film--produced for and first broadcast on the History Channel--documents in full detail the life of the way station. What started out as a modest outpost became a monumental processing center where, during its 62-year history, nearly 12 million people were poked, prodded, tested, and graded to see if they were fit for citizenship. Those with mental or physical illnesses were marked with chalk X's and sometimes shipped home. Rich with personal accounts and rare footage and photos, Ellis Island is a fitting tribute to the island and the era. It takes special care to document the shameful anti-immigrant sentiment that led to quotas and, eventually, the island's ruin and closure in 1954. Never again would new Americans be fed donuts and milk in the waiting room. --Jennifer Vogel

ELLIS ISLAND DVD (IRISH TENORS,THE)Amazon.com
This is a moving tribute on a surprising subject: the bureaucratic establishment that welcomed 22 million immigrants to the United States between 1892 and 1924. It is beautifully sung by the Irish Tenors, in a concert with orchestra on Ellis Island, with a well-prepared commentary by Martin Sheen on the history of that unique institution and some vintage film clips. It is pleasantly nostalgic throughout and deeply nostalgic for one moment: a panoramic view of New York Harbor on a March 2001 morning; the focus is on the Statue of Liberty, but in the background is a structure that then dominated the New York skyline: the World Trade Center. The music is well-selected to balance familiar material ("Danny Boy," "My Wild Irish Rose," "Nearer My God to Thee") with appealing rarities, notably "The Green Fields of France" and two memorable Gaelic songs in an "Irish Medley." --Joe McLellan

Music & Song of Emigrants through Ellis Esland.......2005-09-10
Acceptable recording of a perfect performance.......2004-06-23
Overall, it is a "must have" for any Irish Tenors collection.
How Are Things In Glocca Morra?.......2004-04-16
This CD has a bit more of an Irish American theme as "Isle Of Hope, Isle Of Tears" and "God Bless America" illustrate. Interspersed among these tunes are traditional Irish tunes such as "Macushla" and "Croppy Boy", along with newer songs, such as "The Green Fields Of France" and "How are Things In Glocca Morra?"
The singing is excellent, the words understandable. I appreciate the inclusion the lyrics of the songs contained on the insert of the cover. These are songs you will want to learn, whose stories you will want to research. I have. Listen again and again!
Ireland's top Tenors in another fine concert.......2004-04-01

REGISTRY ROOM - BAGGAGE ROOM - RAILROAD TICKET OFFICE - TREASURES FROM HOME - ELLIS ISLAND CHRONICLES - SILENT VOICES - MEDICAL EXAMINATION ROOMS - AMERICAN IMMIGRANT WALL OF HONOR - MUSEUM DEDICATION AND MORE. THE MUSEUM Our cameras trace the saga from the old world where it all began to the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. Our nation's monument to its immigrant heritage, and the inspiring story of the immigrant's lives in the new world, truly a memorial to the common people, it is testimony to the indomitable spirit of the 12 million souls who trod it's ground seeking entrance to America. THE IMMIGRANTS They came from every point of the compass. Every race and creed. They spoke a babble of tongues and tightly clutched a dream America. Some came to escape poverty, political or religious persecution. Some were driven by the passion for adventure. Experience the profound human drama of ordinary people caught up in the tides of history as Ellis Island plays its roles before, during and after the peak immigration years. THE LEGACY People were born here, married here and some died here. Dreams, hopes and disappointments transpired here. Conjured in the ruins, the halls, the rooms, are the echoes of laughter and lament. Within the multitude of people passing through was the spirit and determination, which helped shape our nation. Here, within the glow of the Statue of Liberty, which beckoned the immigrant into the harbor, Ellis Island was the beginning of opportunity and achievement for those in search of the American Dream.
